010noted a number of times but I'm want to get the word out we are quickly approaching a point where we may have to make a decision if we can continue to offer Latin in the state of Pennsylvania there were only was it six nine certificates issued is it yeah the teach Latin if we move in that direction we will make sure that we do right by students who are currently taking the language but it would mean that we would not offer that as a language for you know for new students coming coming in so if you know anyone who's certificated and can can teach Latin please send them send them our way we'll talk more about this at our curriculum meeting that we'll be having next week or at least give an update to that

019do the right thing for you like if you stand up for somebody if you're in trouble they might stand up for you and the more you do the right thing the more time you'll live in your life foreign so as um around how about a round of applause for that all of our students and staff so as the students are like getting themselves in place um I would just wanted to take a moment to recognize um our teachers that are here and especially our teachers who are directing and leading the play we have Mr robarge and Mrs Michelle Welsh she is we're both here and we also have Quinn Quinton Harriet who's also participating in helping our students but he's not here this evening and um just really want to say like that last piece
020like doing the right thing because you'll live a better life like what great advice to get with that and that just means your life is full of joy and not only do we think about what we do but it's also what we learn by watching what other people do and that's part of our you matter initiative so without any further Ado I think we'll be ready to perform now and then I if there's time I'd like the students to introduce themselves to you [Music] [Laughter] this one fight [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Applause] foreign [Music] foreign hello my name is my name is Ali and my favorite thing about Manila is the teachers hi I'm Adele singson and my favorite thing about Mano are my um friends and peers hi my name is Emily my favorite

024different from the west and who can blame them wanting me to find another Nest a different isn't scary different isn't bad [Music] foreign I know four evil takes a look I am just a friend foreign [Music] thank you [Music] can I ask you to introduce yourself Annie can I ask you to introduce yourself yeah a little bit about the play yeah so my name is Annie Thompson and I play ugly in the fall musical honk at the high school um it's a great musical for little kids as well as adults it's a story of The Ugly Duckling so I am the ugly duckling in the show it's October 27th 28th and 29th we have a Thursday Friday and two Saturday shows so unless your kids go to bed pretty early there's a two o'clock show
025on Saturday um so yeah you can buy your tickets now just um they should be on uh we sent them out to elementary school teachers so um ask your parents or your parents can find them anymore thank you we asked Dr Jeff Nesbitt to join us this this evening so that we can recognize him as the science administrator of of the year that recognition comes to him through the Pennsylvania's science Teachers Association Dr Nesbitt has been our stem coordinator since 2016. he's responsible for the oversight of all STEM related departments in our district which would include math and science computer science and Technical technical education he facilitated with his colleagues the growth of the elementary stem days the Discover day he is very passionate about having students involved in the in that work as teacher
026colleagues reports that he puts their interests and their needs in terms of professional development at the Forefront of all of the work that that he does and we consider ourselves most fortunate to have you part of our team here Jeff and it's wonderful Jeff was nominated by his colleagues at the high school Dr Jeremy tomaszewski as I see is here this evening with us Becky mortland again two teachers from the high school and I mean that I'm sorry did I miss him John John I did not see you back there sorry but I think that you know that speaks volumes uh to have teachers take the time and energy put forth that effort to go through the application process and identify the many ways that Dr Nesbitt has supported the academic growth of our students
027the professional growth of our teachers and we have many wonderful opportunities for our students now because of of that work and your love of the science is maths and those areas so thank you for being here this evening and giving us the opportunity to express to you our appreciation for all you do Dr Nesbitt and we did Dr Nesbitt would not allow us to put a banner up we offered the banner yes offer the banner but we do have hopefully Jeff you'll have a chance to see it we um we do have a recognition of you hanging here which in the on the wall there which will remain they're letting people know we're very proud of what you've accomplished thank you it's a pleasure to work with the school district the school board has always
028been super supportive of all things in the school and working with the high school Science and Math teachers the middle school science and math teachers the elementary science and math teachers it's just a great group of people to always be working with and working for did you want to say it [Laughter] um so there are a few things that every new education educator wishes for and at the top of that list is a supportive and encouraging administrator we consider ourselves very lucky that we don't have to go far to find those at Haverford um but Jeff really takes it to a whole new level um I was lucky enough to be hired by Jeff when I um first got here 14 years ago and from the very first days I'd always get an email every
029once in a while from Jeff with an article about some new idea in teaching flipped classroom or some type of grading idea or Mastery learning and it was never with the expectation that I should change what I'm doing or that I should do something in a different way but it was always with the support that if I wanted to the support was there and Jeff was going to be there to help in any way that he could sometimes it was just talking about the article sometimes it was him coming to the classroom and observing and giving some feedback and having a discussion um and other times it might be a financial thing where he buys some new contraption that we can do in new lab or activity with for the kids um and he's always
030been one of those people that the default answer is yes um and he's going to work really hard to figure out how to to make whatever that wish was come to fruition um this past year um last year I actually missed about two months of school due to a family medical issue and finding Subs these days is very challenging finding in calculus-based AP Physics teacher the last minute is pretty much impossible but like luckily for my students Jeff was able to step in and take over the class they didn't miss a beat they finished the curriculum on time they all did really well on the AP exam and um they continue to ask for him throughout the rest of the year and whether he would come visit them at graduation and I'm sure that I
031have a hard time seeing this happen really anywhere other than ever heard so it's been wonderful having Jeff here it's hard to talk with Jeremy said I've um but lucky enough I've known Jeff first as my building principal and then as my stem coordinator coordinator I've known him since 2006 and I can honestly say as a science department he's really inspired us and provided us with the leadership to take risks and to pursue new opportunities to engage and Inspire our students across every ability level under Jeff's leadership we've been able to build on and continue to continue to develop one of the most robust science elective programs probably in Delaware County we have courses in Marine ecology that are busting at the seams biotechnology forensic chemistry we have new astronomy courses courses in engineering design
032computer science and mobile apps really anything a teacher is passionate about bringing to our students that there's interest in Jeff will try to find a way to make that happen and we've really seen his passion and love for the sciences and for supporting us as a faculty it's trickled down to our students and it's really empowered our students to do amazing things in these clubs and activities and coursework but I think for Jeremy and I one of the best examples that's been for us has just been his amazing support of the Science Academy since 2017. with the support of Jeff and the other high school administrative staff our high school students have been able to build their own content knowledge to design interactive activities and ultimately now themselves through activities like the elementary stem days
033and discover days they're taking on the mentoring and the teaching role in the elementary school as a science teacher why it's more exciting and amazing than that where as we're getting ready for discover day coming up in a little over two weeks over a third of our rooms now are designed and run by the high school students they're not even all run by the high school teachers anymore and that comes from supporting a staff that's excited and giving us all the resources that we need to pass that on and make that happen to the students Jeff is there behind the scenes supporting us Jeremy and I were joking he's the one who's there helping to solder the RFID devices or he's the one running to get dry ice for us on the day of discover
034day so the chem lab looks more magical for the elementary students he's just throughout his time with us he's been exceptional in his ability to just quietly provide the tools and the mentoring that we need to be confident and to allow us and our students just create to adapt and to thrive I love being a Haverford science teacher I think anybody at the high school knows that and I think so many of the things I love about Haverford science are due to just thoughtfulness and his wisdom and the nurturing of our department and we really just couldn't be more excited to celebrate your accomplishments so congratulations foreign [Laughter] [Applause] [Laughter] foreign [Applause] do you have anything else and Mr Donaghy did I see that we are going to potentially be honoring someone else for do
035we have a coach that's a yeah coming up we have a the PIAA identified one of our coaches as a coach of the year in the state of Pennsylvania yep so well that that will be coming busy place the high school is that it yeah all right well yeah it was so so great to have all of that to see and to celebrate and um now we go into the business portion it's good stuff too um the next item on the agenda is public comment for items pertaining to items on tonight's agenda and we had no one sign up so the next item is board committee reports and Mr Schwartz will give us the finance and Facilities committee report okay thank you had a fairly short Finance facilities uh community meeting on the uh on
036the 13th and the only real item on the agenda we we're supposed to have two Williams on on on the agenda but the first one was the um construction update and um not a whole lot of surprises here um Linwood is pretty much closed out they're waiting for the grass to grow to make sure that you know it goes in there for the erosion there was one issue that was not related to the construction but there had been some reports of um a a small issues with the um with the guess um lines there and there was an instance a few weeks ago I guess when there was a um outdoor picnic where the alarm actually sounded so they did take a a a a a thorough look at the um Adventure gas there and
037there they didn't find actually a leak in in some of the pipe fittings um first time actually that um our engineer Ken Matthews said that he ever seen that especially actually only two years so oil piping was taken out and and reinstalled there were a couple of just fittings that for some reason you know every now and then that happens but everything has been replaced with brand new equipment so keep an eye on that obviously um High School One Construction has closed out I think they have to replace the two dead trees other than that's good to go for phase two also also very very close to being closed out the green roof is now in a lot of the display cases have been finished still waiting on a partition in one of the rooms
038and a couple of minor things here and there but very soon we expect to get our environmental permits and certificate of occupancy from the county or if I'm sorry from Township um with Chatham and and Cooper town both of those also are moving along there'll be some change orders and some bills that we'll be voting on this evening nothing um two two crazy there are a couple of of you know um some some duct work uh water line work drywall um the um Infamous Chiller for uh or the the chillers for both schools now are scheduled to ship on November 21st so uh the they'll they'll come in hopefully soon and sit there for a while at least until the weather gets a bit warmer and they're needed but they'll be in the boilers are
039also ready um for the winter which is the which is good news everything's gonna be in place for phase two also just one note for for Cooper Town phase um the roofing we're doing new roofing for for the the school there phase one is now done of roofing and we expect bids in for phase two on November 1st so that's all I have a forks for the for the updates we were supposed to also get a um uh uh report on the feasibility assessment the the facility study that's being done unfortunately um kovit still exists and the individual put to come was not able to to attend that evening but we just care more about that very soon coming up and that was a pretty short meeting and um closing in and finishing construction which
040is a strange thing to think about but yeah all right thank you and then we have our policy committee report from from internet Snodgrass I was looking at larva thank you um yes we had our policy committee meeting this past monday it was another um very successful very packed meeting and we this is part of our ongoing policy audit so earlier this year we um made the decision to review all of our policies they're all available all of our current policies are available to view and we decided that since a lot of them have not been reviewed analyzed discussed in potentially a decade or sometimes too um we thought that it was important to to review these and make sure that they were aligned with our current values that they were modernized and just any
041any general updates either because of the law that has changed or maybe our community has changed so this is part of our ongoing audit um and then as part of that as well we also review whether we need new policies so evaluate you know there are other districts there are through psba we look and see in that section that we're reviewing this month this meeting are there other policies out there that we could benefit from having um in Haverford as well so the policies that we discussed um in our last meeting were zero zero six point one remote board meetings and that was a very good discussion it's been was I think that we actually started having that discussion at our very first policy committee meeting in January so um that one I think we
042are going to move to the board we we have a consensus around that and we'll hopefully be seeing it next meeting we also discussed policy 200 enrollment of students um policy 201 admission of students and both of those had accompanying administrative regulations which is basically sort of the how-to of um of how to implement that policy and what the district is going to do to take that policy and put into action so again whenever the district has an administrative regulation that also gets put online for the community for the the district population to review we discussed uh 202 eligibility of non-resident students um and then that was also accompanying with that we had a discussion of international exchange students um we discussed uh policy 912 research involving District students and staff and that one also
043had an accompanying administrative regulation and then we discussed briefly the policy 913 distribution of materials by non-school organizations groups and individuals which I think we are going to continue to discuss at the committee level so um stay tuned to a future board meeting where we will present all of these in draft form not all of them a lot of them for a first read so um some new faces here policy is very exciting at the school board meetings and we get to not only discuss them in the policy committees but we also bring them in front of the full board and we have a first reading so the entire board looks at it together and decides whether we want to you know continue on in this draft or make some changes to it then it
044goes to a second reading so we do that again maybe with changes and then and then we decided that third full board meeting whether we want to adopt that policy or that revision to that policy and then it becomes updated in our own policy book and we have policies from the 2020s and not the 1990s so that was it it's exciting thank you the next item on our agenda is for finance and Facilities item a is the bill list I will accept a motion to approve disbursements from the following funds as listed Weinberg moved early second moved in a fight for second any discussion all in favor aye any opposed the list is approved Item B is a tax assessment appeals resolutions I will accept a motion to authorize special counsel for tax assessment appeals

050meeting which was three weeks ago perhaps right around there um and we all got to look at a nice copy of that book it looks like a fantastic book so I'm glad we were able to get this on our agenda and if I recall this was the process of kind of a mid-course maybe on the sexy you can talk about that that um it was kind of identified as a need to have a a textbook that better went with the curriculum and captured the content the teachers wanted to include exactly we actually heard from our teachers that although they have a plethora of resources much of that being primary sources and lots of um available resources through open educational resources which means that we don't have a cost associated with them they were finding that
051they were looking for a textbook to handle particular units and making sure that the students would uh each get a Core curricular experience from those that particular textbook so they won't use this textbook for every bit of the course this is in addition to the sources that they are already using they worked very hard over the summer to review several textbooks complete a rubric and this textbook is the one that got the most points and they felt would be best at meeting the needs of our students and reaching our curriculum and the um the digital license is that is that additional material or is that sort of a way for the students to be able to access it sort of if they have the book or their you know computer exactly it is um the
052textbook itself there are additional links and videos that you can't get with a textbook but um it is the textbook itself and as folks remark the textbook itself is kind of big uh and heavy so uh it is not a textbook that is intended to go back and forth of course if students need a copy at home there's always something that we can work out but this would make it more easily accessible for kids uh who might want to access it at home but are not going to need to take it back and forth every day great do you know if they were able to find out if there will be audiobook version through that digital licensing it does have a read aloud portion of it thank you all right thank you for that discussion
053uh any other comments all in favor any opposed the textbook is approved item C is for science kit purchases to I will accept a motion to approve the purchase of 95 Smithsonian complete science kits to include a technology package and Associated professional development for grades one through five in each Elementary building at a cost of one hundred twenty thousand five hundred Seventeen dollars person moved okay second moved and seconded any discussion also presented at the curriculum committee meeting same meeting um yeah so um inquiry-based learning that was the goal of providing science kits which goes along with our preparing contemporary citizens District school and I was just looking to see if Dr Nesbitt is still here to give the thumbs up on these kids he's snucked out but we heard all kinds of good things
054about about the way that the Hands-On learning and inquiry based study of science so that's all on the um the curriculum committee video If people want to learn more about them and I'll just add that the science standards for the state of Pennsylvania will be changing and these kits allow us to be aligned to the new standards and the reason we need to implement them now is because we need the students to experience them now we're going to add on another science kit the next year and then two different science kits the following year and the year after that is the first year that they anticipate the science exam will be different so it really does need to be a process that happens in stages are there consumables within the science kit I know it
055can get really costly to replenish them yes there are consumables and it's funny because they're like little paper cups and dirt and things like that but uh they are there are several items that are consumable we actually work through the dciu and they replenish the kits and it's nice because they work with students in the technical education program who actually fulfill those orders and ship them out so it's a nice use of all of our County resources any other discussion all in favor aye any opposed science kits are approved the next site the next section on the agenda which we have material is public comment other items the board values public comment as an essential component of school governance that adds information for the deliberation of the importance and complex matters that come before the
056board it is an opportunity for members of the community to address the board regarding topics that may become that may come before the board while we conduct business in open public meetings according to the sunshine act it is not a meeting with the public nor is it a question and answer period we have two times for public comment there was an earlier one for items on the agenda um and this is for other school related topics the agenda is published on the school district website in the school board section under board Docs I remind you that together we are engaging in this very local Democratic process while the board welcomes comments and critique and should be held accountable for fulfilling our duties as the elected and volunteer governing body for the school district I ask
057us all to remember that we each of us on the board and who come tonight to observe or to speak that we are all neighbors we all have good intent and act with care and concern for our schools and Community we ask that commenters refrain from personal attacks on board members school officials and other members of the public let us all take this opportunity to model good government for the citizens we hope our students will become residents somebody sounds like they are locked out um [Music] Alexis Alexa Alexis should we residents of the township May in advance of the meeting sign up to make a public comment by emailing public comment at haverfordsd.net in order to give everyone an equal opportunity to speak and per our board policy you will have three minutes to address
058the board at the three-minute point a timer will sound and you will be asked to conclude your remarks please begin your comments by stating your name and confirming your residency in Haverford Township if you have materials to distribute please leave them at the end of the table your name and the topic of your comments will be recorded in the meeting minutes and your presentation is being broadcast and will be recorded as part of our meeting if it is appropriate an administrator will follow up with speakers to discuss or respond to issues raised we had five people sign up for public comment tonight and the first is Kimberly blonik questions hello everyone um first I'd like to thank everybody for uh giving me this opportunity my name is Dr Kimberly blanik and I am the mother
059of a kindergartner and a one-year-old I'm here today to ask that the Haverford School District calendar become more inclusive and Equitable by recognizing all major cultural and religious holidays in the same way the real reason I'm here today is actually to fulfill a promise that I made to my son at six what he currently understands is that for some reason his favorite holiday isn't recognized While others holidays are basic fairness what he doesn't understand is what I fear will one day break my heart is that what comes along with being a mixed family the challenges that half of his identity easily conforms but the other half is that of a stigmatized minority my children need to understand that all of who they are is beautiful therefore I do take them to my parents house for
060Christmas but I also fast for Ramadan every year I learned to make traditional meals for Eid and I conquer my fear of public speaking to ask a school board for inclusive holidays I do these things to make sure that my children understand that all parts of them are good and have great value and to arm them with the self-confidence in case that day arrives when they need it to stand up for their identity fortunately my friend and I investigated and current District policy already supports our ideology guideline one in the religious guidelines States the public schools should show no preference for one religion over another or non-religion and refrain from the promotion of any and all religions however at our schools currently we recognize only certain cultural and religious holidays with a day off but
061do not recognize others with the same course of action in order to support and protect all of our children they need to understand the value of diversity equity and inclusion from the very beginning but we are currently quietly telling our children whose cultures and religions are more important and whose are less our children are listening the diversity in our district is Rich and beautiful in fact when we began talking to people about this we were shocked at the outpouring of support in only a few days time we had a petition about inclusive holidays signed by well over 200 people many parents and students have eagerly eagerly volunteered to come speak make videos or any other way to get their story out we're ready to join the four other local school districts recognizing Eid with a
062day off the four Local District uh school districts recognizing Diwali and at least one other local school district recognizing the Chinese New Year we are ready to do what it takes to include all of our children please let us know how we can help make this a reality thank you so much for listening next speaker is Lucia schlossberg Lucia Lucia hi I'd like to thank the board for allowing me to speak and I also want to thank you for all your hard work that you do my name is Lucia schlossberg I am a Haverford a Havertown resident I've been a resident for uh it'll be 20 years next year and I've really seen over the years how Havertown has changed in a lot of ways and one of them that I'm really pleased about is
063the diversity that I see in our town and I think I started to notice it going to the library like I go to the library a lot I'm from New Hampshire and I've moved around a lot so libraries to me are sort of like the same everywhere so I'm very comfortable there and I started to notice that I was I've just been really happy about it but I you know as part of that I'm just hoping that and I I really don't don't know much about what's happening in the schools I have no children so things aren't coming back to me so I just would hope that we're having diversity training in the schools of you know the administration and teachers and just in my own Office I work with a firm that we have
064offices across the country and after the events that happened in 2020 the CEO was so um taken by it he decided he wanted to have a diversity account Council created so it's of many different you know people of all different colors of different ages and they've done some really great things in kind of educating each other and we have special things happening say in February when it's um you know for for black lives and everyone is allowed to put in information and each month they do something with a different culture and I just think it's a good thing I think it's great that there are so many different people and but I also think it's important that all of our children feel safe and comfortable and included when they go to school and that they're
065supported by their teachers and the administration and also that if they have any kinds of issues they're not afraid to go and ask for help and I thank you all for listening to me the next speaker is Todd Hall [Music] good evening my name is Todd Hall I reside in Haverford Township thank you for opening the door sorry about that but all good um there are individuals in our community who have added calendars and schedules to the list of items that are inherently offensive and the desire for change provides me an opportunity to address some past board reports the school does not observe any religious holidays that's not the school's job the school provides breaks that are spaced out during the school year and occur when if School were to be scheduled a significant number
066of children would be absent from school I took a look at Interfaith religious calendar there are 75 weekdays from September to May that would be off um if the recommendation not to have school when there's any religious holiday was adopted by the board I also took a look at an alternative approach with 75 religious holidays on weekdays during that time frame you couldn't schedule school days on only days when there are religious holidays and missing from this plan about religion are considered is consideration for atheists it's not inclusive if someone needs a government entity to affirm the religion by observing the holiday with the school providing the day off and providing the reason for the day off which again they do not now then I'll explain what the religion is this type of religion is
067when centered around government and doing whatever is advocated by the government this type of religion is reflected in the school board doing whatever was recommended by the CDC instead of common sense or considerations reflective to the needs of a good learning environment since we're on the topic of religion some additional thoughts that take me back to Prior board reports we used to have a society in which religion was taught on weekends and practiced by its members through the week Jewish Christian Muslim others during the week children went to school for academic education supplemented by emotional learning I had guidance class and I benefited from it but it was never repeatedly discussed it um you know board meetings are there weren't signs manifested in classrooms about a system of beliefs the need for a religion and
068let's call it government for uh you know indoctrination by the government government indoctrination established by the government I mean it's prevalent on this board and in this town and it's evident in this board by the frequent lack of discussion of academic education replaced by social and emotional wellness and diversity equity and inclusion social and emotional Wellness is important but it shouldn't be manifested in your reform it should be in things like inviting parents into school buildings for memorable events diversity and inclusion is important however only certain viewpoints are included are it's being advocated by our board on the basis that you can't put a price on it but there is a finite amount of budget from the taxpayers anything certain parties of government promote and agendas promoted by the school board is religion to many
069here if this wasn't true why would a school board member report that when she made constrict constructive criticism that some people said she was attacking teachers I once again respectfully asked that this board pivot its focus to academic education for our children thank you Helene Conroy Smith is the next speaker good evening my name is Helene Camry Smith I live here in Haverford lately there have been a slew of people that come up and I guess some of them are your friends and they come up to the pulpit and claim this information misinformation is only a term used by one party to just show their disdain for another who doesn't agree with them it is like a child who is called wolf when no wolf is present I am on the other hand looking at
070the wolf and I'm saying it's fangs right here right now I see people coming up making false accusations with no evidence to support their claims I see people coming up here and on behalf of the school district to say things that are not true and to I'm coming up here to say I want to holler back now I see grandmother types coming up here and making claim that they're experts because they see one of their grandchildren's classroom meanwhile of years of experience in the school district prior to my children even answering it because I was an advocate for children I have three children who entered the school district and I sat on introduce or Council I work kindly with others I was PTO president of Manoa as well as VP recognition secretary and Treasurer I
071sat on numerous committees I ran HMS dances for two of my children in health at the high school I've hired attorneys in satin IEP meetings for my own children and helped other people's children as as well sat with them and I've also helped hire attorneys for children that weren't getting what they wanted and I met with people prior to doing this I'm well equipped to discuss Haverford School District very well equipped let's turn to some of the issues that are not being addressed inclusive of contracts Haverford School District entered in a contract with dignity Consulting was that contract reviewed with this solicitor prior to it being signed if so did you read that the invoices with unpaid balances will extend beyond 30 days will be charged an additional 250 dollars that's 250 of my tax
072dollars in case you decide you know something happens and it's misplaced another comment that I have is that this agreement says the governing law of this agreement shall be governed by the laws of the state of Maryland any dispute or controversy arising over this into relationship of it will be litigated in the state of Maryland this contract for Pennsylvania the events occurred in Pennsylvania why would even a contract be permitted to be signed for something that's in Maryland alone lastly I have an email from right to knows because it's the only way I get information from the school district and which you are being paid in your tax dollars to have a legal review just so you all know okay in August of 2022 Danielle Vitale I want you to know you sent an email
073to your board of directors and Mr Feinberg and that board of director Ms Williams women sent a copy and forward it to a non-board member masaskia okay so when you take matters set in confidence to an elected board member and forward it to another to a staff member with no specific approval that's not okay who's running this sport what are you doing thank you and the final speaker is Alexis Pasternak foreign Alexis Pasternak I live uh Woodland Drive Havertown uh good evening board members Dr rushi I wanted to start off by reading from a book beyond magenta transgender Teen Speak Out a book which can be found not only in our high school but our Middle School so let's put this in perspective a 12 year old can have access to this book like an
07418 year old can sixth grader 12th grader page 56. I'm glad I no longer have all the tests that testosterone that fueled me to want sex normally guys can get it up with a cold wind that doesn't happen to me anymore I don't have the morning wood I only have it when I'm aroused page 80. I was sexually mature what I mean by sexually mature is that I knew about sex from six up six up I used to kiss other guys in my neighborhood make out with them and perform oral sex on them I like it I used to love oral and I touched through you know what we were really young but that's what we did uh also guide you to hit on me perverts pedophiles I see guys giving me a look and
075it kind of creeped me out they would touch themselves saying come here sweetie something told me not to go I ran away I ran to where there was a lot of people so 14 years old is the minimum reading age according to the books publisher Candlewick as well as Amazon Barnes Noble and even banbooksclub.com this book has super heavy subject matter I have read it I don't I don't speak about a book I haven't read about I'm not going to do that um it said heavy subject matter and traumatic personal experiences throughout when you look up the book through haverford's followed Destiny database and read the description you would never think this is what you're going to get the cover is enticing a child cue child smiling happy that's what we want for our children
076but just just juxtapose it with what I just read you under additional info it says the interest level is young adult you will notice I took this out of the public library it says teen on the side the last time I checked 12 year olds are not young adults so please do not lecture us about safety and Trauma while simultaneously exposing kids to this I will not be filling out a request for reconsideration I should not have to do that I shouldn't have to thank you [Laughter] the next item on the agenda is board reports and I'll start with Dr McKay yeah so on Tuesday evening I had the chance to attend the wellness committee and it was really great to hear about all the different things this different buildings and different areas are working
077on creating more social emotional Wellness for our children um in just some quick highlights of the meeting were as it was mentioned earlier when we heard from the elementary students more clubs are being added at the elementary level at all of our elementaries and it's really great for the younger kids to be able to have access to this in particular there was some Talk of the dance club and the recycling Club it was great to hear all the different and fitness club all the different clubs that are happening at the elementary level the Middle School continues to have their daily Wellness opportunities which are 17 minutes long which I just have to make a comment about how precise the middle school is with down to the minute on how much time they spend so 17
078minutes per day for their their Wellness opportunities and the high school had had an activities Fair um a couple weeks ago and we'll have a wellness day coming up very soon these are just some of the few things that are happening but it was great to hear um about what the wellness committee is doing throughout the district thank you for being our board liaison for that okay so just a quick update on the October 5th dciu board meeting the two major buckets here we approved the receipt of the school district's annual Title 1 and Title II non-public allocations for dciu to provide training coaching Staffing and professional development services based on the contract that runs from July 2022 to September 30th 2023. the next one is of particular interest to our district we also approve
079the request for the following school districts to enter into a memorandum of understanding with dciu to form a title III Consortium that's related to services that English language Learners receive um this contract this mou runs from July 1st 2022 to September 30th 2023 and we are one of the districts that is now part of that Consortium so that's exciting news we also approved a contract with the school district of Haverford Township for dciu to provide Wilson Reading Program level one tutors from September 6 2022 to June 30th 2023 so some exciting things that are happening are directly benefiting our district also just wanted to thank Dr blanik for her comments tonight and I hope that more inclusive school calendars are something that we as a board can discuss in the future um last week I
080believe it was last Thursday I had the opportunity to attend the first dignity Consulting training that was provided for administration and for school board members and I just wanted to take an opportunity to make some comments that I've been actually wanting to make for a while and I just never was sure when the right time was but now it seems as good as any um when a board member votes no on a particular item action uh textbook in service a workshop it's a very dangerous leap to make that when they vote no that they have nefarious intentions um you know if you're unsure why a board member votes yes or no to a certain bill in service textbook what have you um I'm here tonight just to ask you all to reach out to the
081board member and ask why they voted the way they vote there are many reasons why a board member might vote Yes or no um and you know you could have a literacy workshop and a board member might think that they just it was redundant compared to a workshop we just did that wouldn't mean that they didn't support children learning to read you could vote no to a French textbook maybe because you thought another textbook was better doesn't mean that you don't support language arts education and sadly I think we're in a time now where people do make those sleeps oh well yes you voted no you don't want the kids to read and and that's just that kind of black or white this or that thinking isn't isn't isn't helpful um you know there were
082many reasons I voted with the loan no vote to the dignity Consulting Workshop um but I wanted to there was one per a lot of really nasty things online um that I had to read through um but only one person and I want to take an opportunity to thank one parent in the community who reached out to me wrote an email was not pleased was not happy with my no vote but asked me a lot of questions and um I asked for her phone number and we were able to have a really wonderful productive call she explained her concerns I was able to tell her why I voted the way that I voted and at the end she said to me okay I'm okay with that not that she agreed with my vote mind you
083but she understood where I was coming from and I really applaud this mother for going to the source for seeking someone out our emails are available online um you know I'm always willing to talk to someone who wants to have a conversation and this was such a productive conversation with his mother and I thanked her then and if she's listening now I thank you now it's so important sometimes not everyone thinks alike and you shouldn't malign someone for thinking differently or try to get them to to see your point of view you explain yourself and you listen and maybe you come away with something um you know while we were talking I gave her my reasons why I voted no um I had many at the time and I'm happy to share them with anyone
084who wants to reach out and and write to me and um I did make a point what we um when I talked to this mother in our community she's a middle school child and a younger child and at the elementary level that you know um what I found interesting is you know there's many worthy topics for in-service and the emails that I received on people unhappy with my vote it was all you should have voted yes on a Dei Workshop there was nothing about dignity Consulting the authors the book I went to this workshop and you know I would never just vote Yes for a stem Workshop stem is so important literacy is so important um you know I that's not how I operate there's many worthy topics and um so tonight I'm just at
085um I'm asking to summarize don't miss disparage or malign someone based on a vote without reaching out and asking them why they voted why they did that's dangerous and wrong and on a um on a completely personal note um going online and calling people names and saying malicious comments that's bullying and um you know I'm happy for you to criticize my vote on my words that is fine but um try to treat others the way you want to be treated try to think how you would feel if you know someone spread lies or called your child name on lines I'm a human being I have emotions and feelings and I think you really need to consider someone's mental health when you go online and you attack them um you know and to the people um
086who read the stuff I can't control what people write but I would just kindly ask like this one mother did um if you're reading these comments and awful things and I'm off the site that posted this that I thought was a happy site but um take a step back and ask does the person writing these even know this person might they have a bias or might they have an agenda and just go to the source and thank you for listening um I just um it's fall and I feel like it really really feels like fall because we're so busy um there's a lot going on with the board there's a lot going on with the district um I have in my notes that I wanted to say with the Manoa presentation and the high school
087performance is like the best meeting ever um it was just so wonderful when I started on the board in late 2019 I feel like we had a lot of these come in and it was just like this is what the board is I mean the board's a lot of things but um but it's really exciting to um to have our community come in here to to go out into the into the community and um over the last few weeks I was able to go to the Ford's Fight For Life night it was really fun it was such a good Community event my oldest daughter came with me sort of last minute she's like you're going to the game I'm going to the game so um it was really good to see people in the community
088there I'm just like what a great event that was wonderful meet a school board workshop last week which I almost forgot about because I feel like we've just been so busy but um you know just to how to work together as a board um make sure that like at times of of disagreement how we can work together and um you know I think that that was a really great Workshop to be a part of I also took the opportunity to attend the dignity Consulting workshop last week which was so wonderful for a lot of reasons um but certainly not least of which is you know getting in these small groups and And discussing you know one of our district goals and um you know and how we further that goal um really getting to know
089you know some of our administrators um so that was that was just just a wonderful experience and then tonight um you know we're able to um meet some of our new teachers that we have in the district you know we've been approving a lot of hiring I know HR has been busy very good and um you know it's I just really um I'm think grateful for the opportunity to to meet all the people in our district and in our community so um you know Happy fall looking forward to more events here the other way we can tell it's follows that we're in coats many of us at least so um yes Paul definitely is here a couple couple board members uh um referred to the workshops that that that we've had a couple of weeks
090with able to attend one of them we did discuss a lot of issues including um Dei and you know I I think it's safe to say that um this board is very supportive of a I mean of those um measures and you know one thing I think that's important is that it's done at all levels and it's at the board levels to the administration level staff level and we saw this evening at school level and with the students at um and Manoa were talking about you know it it it's it illustrates some of the benefits of this Dei initiative you know the the the the Dei initiatives you know permeating throughout our our schools and you know it it's the the inclusiveness and and and and the equity we're not perfect obviously yeah we have
091people who are giveness who are giving us thoughts about it and please you know feel free to keep doing um giving those ideas uh to us but is something that we are um um behind I think it's not it's not maybe as much as it should be up here but I think it's something that that's important to to support so um that has done analore thinks um it has been a busy few weeks I've been really busy um at a recent meeting we voted to approve the contract with the authors Crown apple and Cobb Dr King made some comments in favor of that contract and why we need to focus on our district goal of diversity and inclusion I agreed with her comments and I voted in favor of this professional development opportunity to quote
092the authors inclusion is engagement within a community where the equal worth and inherent Dignity of each person is honored an inclusive community Provo promotes and sustains a sense of belonging it affirms the talents beliefs backgrounds and ways of living of its members and I think highlights from Manoa that were presented tonight our list of extracurricular activities our comments from our our stem teachers I think all exemplify this goal of inclusion I'm reading the book that goes along with that professional development and I was able to attend the first workshop and I remain in strong support of this District school there are many ideas and discussions that came from that meeting that really resonated with me both as a school board member as an and as an educator and there are other ideas that have really
093given me a lot to think about and I'm still chewing on them a little bit um so I think the administration for bringing this Workshop to the district I look forward to discussing how we can continue the focus on belonging and inclusion in our district to support our students and to ultimately bolster student achievement um I had the opportunity to also attend the um the board Workshop that was last week as well so that was a great opportunity I really enjoy the facilitators I thought they did a really nice job so thank you for that um I had the opportunity to attend the Delaware County Community College liaison dinner and meeting that was last Wednesday the DCCC Administration gave a really excellent presentation very similar to the one they gave here just extended and with
094a lot more photos in it um they discussed a lot about their programs ways that they've collaborated with different school districts and communities to meet the needs of the students and those communities so I strongly encourage all members of our community to check out their website for more information about college courses and Workforce Development programs that they offer and I remind all of our students and parents within the district about our dual enrollment program at the community college I also just got big news as the liaison that this state has guaranteed funding for 50 percent per year of the construction of their new Southeast Campus at the site of the former Bonner premee school so that's really it's I think it was a It's a 65 million dollar project I think they said so 50
095per year is that's amazing um that's going to be an amazing renovation the photos were amazing all the ideas and thought that's been put into how to make that space the best space for the community for the students and really honoring the the building itself it was really just it was fantastic and I really think it's going to be very accessible to Haverford Township community so I'm excited to see you know all of our students getting involved once that is available um it was a pleasure to meet with our new teachers today prior to this meeting so welcome to all of you um I'm looking forward to some upcoming fall activities like trunk or tree and the Halloween parade and the musical performance was fantastic by our high schooler and so I'm hoping to be
096able to attend the musical as well and finally our favorite day discover Day is coming up it's at the high school we've already heard about it but I'm gonna plug it one more time because it's our favorite it's a free event it's on November 5th from 10 o'clock to one at the high school it is a really really fun day the teachers and especially the students volunteer their time the entire science Wing is just busy with different activities and so I hope many of you will be able to attend so thank you I've been busy thank you thank you on the legislative side the two-year legislative session in Harrisburg is coming to an end all all the bills that have been introduced will expire and any that are deemed worthwhile will have to be reintroduced
097in January not much has happened in Harrisburg [Music] we're we're hearing that up to 60 members of the general assembly may turn over in addition to the you know the Statewide races um I would encourage folks to get out and vote Monday is the last day to register to vote school board members have said this past couple of weeks have been really pretty busy I have notes from different things I went to one was the psba board leadership monthly exchange is a online convening of school leaders from across Pennsylvania has 500 districts so you get to hear lots of different perspectives the topic was social media use psba is the Pennsylvania School boards Association they have a guide for school directors they have an online course and some policy Guidance the recommendation is if using
098social media use it to educate and Advocate on issues affecting our district to brag about District achievements like our students and staff to invite the community to attend board meetings and other functions and to connect with other local leadership then there is a psba all School directors that was earlier this week and I do recommend that's available to all of our board members it happens on the third Tuesday at 12 30. I recommend everybody sign up and dial in if you can if not you can at least get the slides and materials this one was a fall legislative session update um as Mr Feinberg said it's been pretty quiet they're not expecting any major education policy here at the end of the term but there are always education related bills and proposals in the works
099in the house and the Senate um we expect that after the election of the governor that will give some more momentum to some versus the others the election is on November 8th um expecting historic turnover and Haverford Township itself is a place that has experienced the redistricting that has affected districts around the state we're gonna have a new governor for the first time in eight years again education is on the ballot even if School directors are not so if you're concerned about topics like vouchers and school Choice Charter reform funding for public schools the issuance of new mandates culture and culture issues that intersect with schools please vote your values um and I was able to go to the Delaware County Community College the dinner and presentation like uh Dr Crispin said um and just
100wanted to say it was uh in addition to getting the presentation of all the current programs that serve our high school students and the community for their professional development career tracks educational growth um it was also nice to have the opportunity to um have have dinner and talk with Mr dunnegie the high school principal and then one member of our community Elizabeth Shepard Ramadan Is On The Board of Trustees and of the community college so it was nice to be able to talk with her about her experience um you've heard a couple things about the workshops that board members have participated in the one Workshop was with board and administrators looking at our district goals and ways that they will be monitored assessed and measured so those will I think those were really productive conversations
101that will help us guide our work and focus throughout the school year and staying on top of goals that look at first and foremost student achievement curriculum but then also you know the other significant work that the district does and just running the district there are budget there are HR their operations matters and so the board and administration had opportunity to dig into those and then also to do some work as a board on communication methods and ways that we can better engage and look forward to continuing to do that board development and several of us were able to do the workshop with District administrators with the dignity and Consulting author and board members I think there were four or five of us on the call and 40 people in particular or in total that
102participated and want to thank the board members who took three hours out of a work day to to participate one of the things that I got out of it was the opportunity it was like the first Workshop so it was a chance just to kind of practice some of the ways that we talk and learn about each other and get to like know and connect with people so I had a chance to talk to some of the district administrators that I didn't know so much and now I had a nice chance to get to know them and practice just some ways of kind of being open and kind of establishing a community of trust to build on and it'll be interesting to see how that work continues and and Spills over into our schools but
103manila's presentation shows a lot of that's already being done those kids are great um and uh just one other thing I was I'm gonna say we um board members like uh um snoggrass said like to get out into the community and one of the invitations that we got was from Mr Mr gittleman invited us to the high school competition marching bands performance of their um award-winning I guess they've done really well this year with their Black Swan presentation so I stopped into that and um it it was a really great show it was a beautiful day a little windy and the feathers for Black Swan were really kind of you know ruffling in the wind but you can tell how much hard work and practice and preparation goes into the um that performance the Artistry
104the music and the Precision really well done and if you live anywhere near the high school you hear the the practicing that goes on all the time so it was nice just to see it all come together and um thank you to Mr beadelman for extending the invitation and making sure that we knew that that was happening think that is it for my board reports so the next item on the agenda is just a report on our executive session the board met an executive session this evening to review real estate transaction procedures with Council the next regular public board meeting is scheduled to be held on November 3rd 2022 at 7 30 PM in the boardroom of the Oakmont Administration Building and with that our agenda is concluded so I welcome a motion to adjourning
