okay Mr Fusco we are now live thank you very much all right I'm G to call our policy January policy meeting to order uh welcome and we're going to start the evening with the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all all right uh moving along here uh we're going to go to public comment uh if there is anybody uh wishing to address the committee uh this is the time individuals attending this meeting virtually and intending to speak to the board should be aware that they are being recorded in order to meet the requirements of Pennsylvania Sunshine Law it is necessary to record the names of all citizens who speak to
the board during the meeting to assure compliance with this requirement it is essential that those planning to address the board raise their hand electronically and state their name and address members of the audience are asked to limit their questions and comments to allow time for all those who wish to speak to the board the committee chair may ask an individual to yield the microphone to the next speaker all right Mar is there anybody wishing to speak to the board or the committee tonight at this time there are no hands to speak speak all right in that case we'll move along to our items recommended for uh work session Excuse Me Miss Mr Fusco uh the approval of the minutes oh of course oh yeah I skipped right over that didn't I get a motion to
approve the minutes in the December meeting so moved all in favor I I all right motion carries uh okay sorry about that I'm a little over anxious because I'm very excited about tonight's presentation um we are going to be hearing about um policy 832 which may seem a little out of order since we've been working our way through the 200 series um but that is because um we are working on fulfilling a commitment to this District that we made when we passed our anti- racism resolution uh at the end of the summer beginning of the school year um to draft an educational Equity policy uh so I'm looking forward to hearing the presentation on the proposed policy this evening and thank you Mr fusker I too am excited about uh moving to this agenda item
I'm thrilled for all the work that's been done to be able to create this educational Equity policy we had the thoughtful input of numerous individuals some of whom are with us this evening we also had a great relationship with the Pennsylvania School boards Association as we developed this uh policy and of course uh sweet Stevens and our solicitor Kyle Summers very integral and helping us to get this put together uh so this evening we do have a bit of a brief presentation I'm going to throw it to Dr Bower and he will do some introductions and we'll work our way through tonight's presentation so Dr Bower and Dr let me say this Dr bow has just been phenomenal leading this whole effort to get this educational Equity policy uh reduce the writing so well done
Dr Bower and with that I'm gonna throw it to you thank you Dr diet and thank you vice president Fusco uh I am so pleased and excited uh toe present this group to you this evening who will eventually present our policy um Mrs fakes if you wouldn't mind uh bringing up the presentation itself uh for the audience at home and anyone else the actual policy is attached but it is you'll notice a seven-page document um that I don't know that we're going to read through but rather um I'd like to share an overview um and we will do that in segments with our uh group here this evening okay so uh some folks did see the template here or the the format of the presentation um and I've received several compliments already on the presentation
itself I just want to highlight that uh this is a publicly accessible template I did not create this beautiful template we added a North pend flare to it um but M Morin King uh and I'll recognize her efforts as well she helped me with this presentation this evening so um with that let's dive in and I'll give you a brief history and summary of how we got to this point and then we'll actually share some highlights of the policy in hopes uh Mr Fusco that we would eventually move this policy um to a work session because I do believe that it is um worthy of the consideration of the full board in more depth than typical with our policies um so a brief agenda of the presentation this evening and I'm hopeful that we can
keep the presentation roughly 30 minutes or fewer um and then have some time for questions or feedback um we prefer the glowing feedback of course course but um we're going to go over the the timeline of how we got to this point um and talk about uh the folks who are with us this evening then overview the policy itself and then of course as I said uh offer the opportunity for some questions or feedback next slide please okay so you will notice here uh this is kind of a process overview um we began with the support of our current School Board uh a comprehensive policy review process in January of 2019 and as Dr Dietrich mentioned uh we collaborated and partnered with uh psba which is the Pennsylvania School boards Association and we've been reviewing
our policies top to bottom um so we are I'd be willing to say we're about halfway through um and uh each month we've brought forth eight 10 12 policies to this committee and they eventually go to the full board for a first read then a second uh and approval and this month we are only going over one policy uh which of course is the equity policy policy so as a result of um we reached out to psba and said hey do you guys happen to have a a equity policy available as they were reviewing our initial batch and we heard from Dr Heather Bennett uh from psba with enthusiasm and she said essentially um so many districts reach out and say hey do you have an equity policy and uh to to be frank here
it is uh she said that it is a patch that a lot of districts Reach Out and want to utilize a policy just to say they have a policy and she reached out to me personally and Mr Summers um because she said you know what I know about North pen and I know the work that you've been doing uh in in the area of cultureal proficiency and equity and I think most districts just want a policy but you guys have put the work in behind the scenes uh to get you to a place where you're ready to adopt one uh so that was in April so she was excited to work with us and invited Mr Goslin and I and Mr goin's with us this evening uh to the Equity task force uh that June
where we got the the preview of the policy and it was it was top secret uh Mr gosin I'm sure you agree that we they gave it to us and we marked it up and debated and argued and discussed and deliberated and then they collected it and it was a very formal process they wouldn't let anybody out of the room with this policy even though it was just a draft a number of us including Mrs sto Dr Dietrich Dr Waters Mr gosin and Mrs Carter all of which who are here with us this evening attended uh an equity Summit then in the fall of 2019 where they teased the policy and said that it was uh being drafted and on its way and had uh received some feedback from folks next slide please and the
timeline continued um in July and amidst all the uh social injustice and the unrest in our world um and locally quite frankly um School Board uh adopted a resolution to support anti an anti-racist climate and they also adopted an equity statement beliefs uh of the board so those both occurred in July on the heels of uh much of what we were seeing on television uh magnify some of the equity issues and imbalances um so then we uh the equity policy itself was released by psba and it was kind of a template it was actually I don't know Mr Summers something like a 12 page page 1215 page template you could Infuse this you could use utilize these parts and it was kind of a a toolkit for making an equity policy and at that point
uh we brought a group together and we leveraged our cultural proficiency executive committee and and of course Mr Summers led the way and we had many many meetings uh might say half a dozen uh to get us to a point where the policy is before you this evening and uh so with that next slide please uh I just want to highlight one aspect of the aforementioned anti-racism board resolution that number one uh in that resolution said a passage of an equity statement we actually did that that evening and then the next step was an equity policy and an action plan um so that's what you're seeing this is us making good on a promise to our community uh to bring forth to the board an equity policy and for eventual or hopeful adoption um so
I think it's important to highlight that that is number one on the steps that we said we would take so next slide please okay uh some folks that I don't know uh need any introduction to the North Penn School District Community uh but I think it's important to highlight that this evening we have with us Dr Deanna Waters uh who is certainly no stranger to our ECI commit committee um but Dr Diana Waters is our director of curriculum and Equity uh Mr Mark gosin serves the district as special EDS supervisor um and has a focus in much of his work on Equity uh Mrs Christina Carter is the principal at cul Elementary School and Mrs Alexis drle uh is a North pen parent and a member of our executive committee I believe uh Mrs drle
I think you have students at Dale and Montgomery um but she has found herself uh on many committees because I think she's attended Dr dietrich's uh conversations with Kurt in the past and he has really targeted her as someone who is is uh just provides great insights to us so we've invited her and she's done such a great job that I'm sure she would say unfortunately for her she gets invited to a lot of things now uh because she's so helpful and supportive and offers great perspective to us and then lastly uh with us this evening I'd like to recognize Miss Moren King who helps me uh often and worked with me through the editing of the policy and putting together this presentation um so before I pass the mic to Dr Waters I would
like to also acknowledge other members who contributed to this Draft before you so next slide please and we have of course a gentleman who needs no introduction as well Mr Kyle Summers from sweet Stevens Kats and Williams who really guided our efforts uh Dr Mia Kim our director of Human Resources Dr Betty Santoro the director of Elementary Dr margerie D Assistant Director of Human Resources Mrs Rachel early who is our curriculum supervisor in Humanities at the secondary level Mrs Jackie garco who is our curriculum supervisor for special content areas and professional development Mr Nick Taylor is an assistant principal at the high school and Mr David yum is a school climate coordinator at the elementary level so that's the team as you can see it is a a great group of Minds uh I was
privileged to kind of lead them with Mr Summers um and I can't emphasize enough how proud I am of the content of what you'll hear this evening um I feel I feel very good about the fact that this is much of this most of it we are actually doing um but it will force us to do so in a concise organized and systemic way um to guide us to the Future and well beyond um so we're just so excited about this and with that if we could have the next slide um and you'll see a few quotes in here that I think do relate to our work um and you'll notice here the quote from Mother Teresa says I alone cannot change the world but I can cast a stone across the waters to create
many ripples so you'll see a few throughout the presentation so I believe we are kicking things off with Dr Waters yes hi good evening thank you so much for having us tonight I'm also really excited to be here especially to talk about the equity policy because it's something that is very much needed um and just also really proud of what this team uh has done so we don't want to read slides um we know you can all do that but the purpose is one that I think we do need to read because we want to make sure that everything on here is captured and the why behind this so the board adopts the policy to prioritize the principle of educational Equity Through the Fair and just allocation of resources opportunities and treatment based upon each
individual's needs the pursuit of educational Equity requires the continuous and collaborative effort of identifying various aspects of different programs and operations in which consideration of educational equity shall be analyzed Incorporated and prioritized next slide please okay so with having an equity policy certainly comes with some expectations so with this policy the superintendent or his design um will really expect that we assess our student groups and also address the identified needs so it's really important to know you know which troups which groups aren't achieving why they're not achieving and then have some targeted plans around how we're going to get them where they need to be another expectation is that all of the employees in our district regardless of their roles and responsibilities will make sure that they work really hard to Foster an equity focused
culturally responsive climate and that they are applying all of the professional development and trainings that we have done and will continue to do around cultural proficiency and equity and you can see there below some of the topics that we've covered um in the past and again we'll continue to cover because this work is certainly a journey and there's always more to do so that's kind of where we are as far as the delegate Dr Waters is your microphone working I don't really think it is um but well you're back let's go it's off to Mark Goslin it's perfect timing it's having some troubles for sure sure I got you no problems so um one of the things that's at the heart of our Equity policy is an educational audit that will be conducted by the
superintendent um or his design and the the real purpose of that audit is to Benchmark and take a look at educational Equity across the district um in all of our schools and all of the things that we do as a district uh and all of our curriculum our hiring and to report um on that every two years to guide our work so that's kind of the heart of the plan as that educational Equity audit next slide please and then what that will drive is an educational action plan and that action that action plan is three parts and so communication and transparency and how that works is that the plan will be presented to the board um once every three years by the superintendent and so that'll be our three-year plan to guide our work as
a as a district uh also the accountability the plan will have clear and accountable goals um and metrics that go along with those so that um we can show the numbers in terms of um where we are and the grounds we're making in closing our um disproportionality and increasing our Equity across the district and then also making sure that we have broad representation and this whole process I think was the model for that in terms of making sure that we have diverse stakeholders um from inside the school from our parent groups um everyone working together to make sure that all voices are elevated um as we undertake this work next slide so in this educational Equity action plan uh we have a couple of key components to it we want to make sure that those
Equity practices are embedded in everything that we do as a district um so that that's on the Forefront of our minds we make decisions so we're asking ourselves all the time is this what's best for kids we're also asking ourselves is this Equitable and so I think that's a real important part of the plan and something that we were really proud to to bring forth includes goals and practices um that we will be very clear about putting down on paper um as Dr uh Boward teas at the beginning of the of the presentation some of these things we're already doing but this really does codify it get it down on paper and hold us accountable and um we felt that that was our responsibility um to our students and to our community to do so
includes benchmarks and metrics that we'll use again to evaluate our work and our progress and then finally a summary of results that we can share with the district and also celebrate um as we move the work forward next slide thanks okay so the educational Equity update um as a parent on this committee I sort of approached all of our meetings and conversations from that perspective is someone who's a little bit on the outside and doesn't necessarily know about all the work that's going on behind the scenes so um this is when I wanted to know when is everyone like me going to get to find out about the progress that the district has been doing um so so as a part of this policy we've built in an annual educational Equity update that will be
given to the board at a public meeting um and this was something I really for let's do it soon and let's do it often so we can continue to find out about all of the work that's happening um and these updates are going to include a ton of data on a variety of different areas that I'm going to throw it back tomorrow so some of the areas that we report on are our students so we want to know who our students are how many we have um what the demographics of those students are looking at our achievement indicators how are those students performing um by different groups and making sure that we're um taking a deep dive into um the results of our students and making sure that we're meeting the needs of all Learners
in the district also um Beyond achievement looking at attendance and behavior and U what the outcomes are for those and making sure that we're being even-handed in the way that we address those needs for our students and then um I think one of the really unique is is also looking at Opportunity indicators so showing not just our outcomes but also what are the possibilities um so that our kids Can Dream Big Dreams here in North pen uh and have access to do so by taking Advanced courses and participating in extracurriculars we're also going to take a look every year um in this plan at the administrators teachers and staff we want to make sure that we are um hiring and recruiting folks that look like our students and so we want to always be working
to increase the diversity of our staff um we also want to be looking at the teacher turnover by district and by school um it's not enough to go all day and recruit staff and hire staff but we need to keep those staff and so U making sure that we are coming up with great ways to retain them and we're looking at that information to make good decisions guiding our work um taking a look at our professional learning opportunities at each School through an equity lens um and Dr Waters talked about some of that work but again we want to make sure that we're sharing that out with the the community so that they know I think Alexis gave us some great feedback and saying we didn't know all these things as a parent that were
going on um and so I think that pushed us to get outside of our kind of Insider group think and say let's be you know um you know transparent and share this this is great stuff to celebrate so we're really happy to to share those efforts as well and then also taking a look at our curriculum making sure that it's culturally responsive and is sensitive to the students that we have before us and making sure that everyone feels that they're represented in the curriculum well we also take a look at our resource allocation where does our money go um your budget tells the story of your district and so um you know we know that looking at where our money goes speaks a lot about what we value so we'll be making sure that we
report out um our resource allocations in terms of our finances also our operational programming um the programs and the services and Personnel um and how we resour how we allocate resources to operational um aspects of the district and then also the structural um reporting on our structural allocations and how we share our resources equitably uh across our buildings in our communities um some one of those things we looked at recently for example would be making sure that all of our schools have air conditioning that that wasn't something we only reserve for certain neighborhoods or certain children so um we're always looking at these things through our Equity lens making sure that everybody has an equal opportunity here at North pen hi good evening so I really love that this policy um really helps give us
some guid ID lines on how we're going to build and maintain a structure within North pin that focuses on these essential areas so I we have seven below but I really just want to highlight four of them that we as everyone said we've been working on these a lot so when we really look at some of the guidelines is grow um knowledge and skill so we've been doing that through our professional development through our curriculum Department with our teaching staff and our Administration also you saw through the development of this policy but also through making sure that we have diverse voices represented from our students to our staff in decision making and just making sure we're hearing um diverse voice and background and making sure they have the opportunity to share also promoting accountability working
with our staff to really look at how do we hold each other accountabil accountable for equity and as a district how do we hold ourselves accountable by looking at how are we succeeding and where do we need to continue to grow and the last one I just really wanted to highlight was addressing barriers to learning and participation we're all here in education to make sure that we're removing those barriers and making sure that as Mark said before we provide access and opportunity to all of our students so that they can succeed you go to the next slide so multiple Pathways to success and high expectations is directly related to opportunity and access and that's something you're going to continually hear us say as we go throughout this this policy really helps us to ensure that
we're creating a system that can last long Beyond us to be able to provide for our students and even make sure staff have this opportunity to have different Pathways to success and make sure that we're setting high expectations that we know all of our students can achieve and we work to help them get there when we really look at one two and three we're looking at that do they have the exess um to be able to look into their interests to be able to pursue things um just beyond High School do they have the opportunity to have access to high level courses um in different programming and AP and honors and also do they have the opportunity to be on sports teams but not just to be on them but also to actually be a
vital member of the team and play and we see them so do all of our students from diverse backgrounds have that an opportunity to the next slide so circling back to resources um we also want to ensure that the plan addresses that we provide explicit access to um Equitable resources so that all of our students have the opportunity to participate in a high quality educational program um and so they have Equitable access to um the I guess curriculum learning um elements that are described here so um instruction materials curriculum high quality facilities um they're getting the supports they need our teachers are embracing teaching practices um that honor and value our diverse student population um and then any other um educational resources that we can use to enrich and enhance our curricular experience and our
learning outcomes for our students one of the things that's crucial to us is that we're always striving to to um ensure that Embrace a welcoming and inclusive environment and so it's really important to us that all of the staff um and all the folks that work with us strive to create a welcoming inclusive bias free environment and culture that North pen um again supports a culture and environment that values and reflects responsiveness to the diversity of our families and also our community and that we engage um as Educators and as Leaders at in respectful in civil discourse um that is responses to students and helps them grow and make meaning and make sense of the world that um that we live in and also in a way that helps to promote diversity and Equity um
and and greater understanding and tolerance for all of our Learners so partnership and inclusion uh this guiding principle of the policy is just stating that the district wants to welcome and Empower families of all kinds so regardless of the color of your skin your income level whatever disabilities you might have the language that's spoken at home um or anything else that would cause you to be underrepresented and we not only want to welcome them but make it be known that we recognize them as essential Partners in making decisions about their students educational experience and we want to continue to provide uh multiple ways and flexible opportunities just to have these conversations with families or members of the community um and we also want to continue to look around us into the community and find examples
of businesses or organizations or even just individuals within the community that are doing this work and doing this work well so we can partner with them and we can all work together to collectively sort of raise the bar for cultural competency next slide please all right uh data Focus so we want to have data driven decision-making and that means that we're going to collect data at districtwide and also at the school specific level and then use that data to make informed decisions for the pursuit of educational Equity um so to use disproportionality as an example because that's something that the district is already working on you can collect the quantitative data that's going to be the raw numbers of students that are enrolled in high level courses or um receiving disciplinary action but then it's
important to note that we also are going to look at qualitative data we're going to collect through conversations and focus groups and interviews and case studies um and this is going to help us dive deeper into some of the trends that might be uncovered by some of the quantitative data and it's just going to help us figure out where are there additional supports that might be needed to help um achieve that goal of educational Equity so when we look at having an equity policy I think the heart of it is how do we help our staff and our students to have an equity lens that's how we really help to make that change and this policy helps to guide us there and kind of helps us to stay focused do we have an equity lens
in the area of policym like we do tonight or in our practices and programming and budgeting and our resources so we really want to continue using this policy to help guide us and reinforce why we need to have professional developments to help our staff to learn how to have that critical Equity lens when they look at things to make sure that we are addressing all areas of need across all diverse backgrounds and so one of the ways to help us to have that Equity lens one of the ways to make make sure that we're thinking about all students all the time is making sure that we are culturally proficient and culturally being being culturally proficient is really really important because it really helps to promote an atmosphere that's respectful and one where you know students
are learning from one another and embracing differences um when you think about curriculum as this slide speaks to you really can't think about curriculum without also thinking about instruction and assessment they all kind of go hand inand and so one of the things that we're going to continue to do in our curriculum department is to make sure that our students see themselves in the resources that we're using so we want to make sure that we are providing resources and instructional materials you know that reflect our students and are responsive to them and their needs and also to make sure you know that we're thinking about that cultural lens that Christina talked about no matter what we're doing so one of the things that we've really started looking at for example is the novels that were
sorry I keep it times out every uh every few minutes um but one of the things we're doing is really taking a look at our novels and making sure that our students see themselves in the novels and see themselves you know students of color seeing themselves in a positive way um and not in a stereotypical way for example and so again being culturally proficient helps all of these things kind of come together and helps us to become more natural at making sure that we are doing everything um with an equitable lens um that last bullet there you know at the end of the day we really want our students to become culturally proficient citizens um when you think about everything that's kind of been going on um in our country um especially this year this
summer last week um we want our students to to go out into this country and be able to work with different people and and do it in respectful way and so helping our teachers helping us our Administration our staff our students all of us to become more culturally proficient will again really make it a lot more of a natural um way to just always be looking at things um from that Equity standpoint which is really really important to make sure that all means all next slide so we want to take a look at our Workforce dver Workforce diversity sorry um and making sure that we um are recruiting and hiring a Workforce that is free of um are able to come to work in a place that is free of discrimination and bias where everyone
feels welcome um regardless of um their ethnicity their race their sexual orientation that this is a place place where all of our employees are welcome that we identify and address barriers that we currently um have that would potentially um you know limit our ability to recruit and hire those folks we want to take a look at that we've done some work already this summer in looking at that taking a look at some of our questions that we ask or the way that we do screenings of applicants um to make sure that we are being more inclusive in the cidate pools that we're building and to actively recruit and promote highly qualified folks and our HR team has done a great job of going to historically black colleges and universities to recruit folks traveling to other
parts of the country uh to cast a wider net and so we're really making a concerted effort to spread um you know wide Nets to to make sure that we're recruiting a diverse force and traveling to places if we have to and making sure that we're um bringing the very best people to North pen to work with our kids okay and then the last slide to kind of tie it all together um The Professional devel everything that my colleagues talked about tonight um the professional development is key it's really important that we are continuously training um our staff members all stakeholders so that again we can stay on this journey together to becoming culturally proficient and once we're culturally proficient and as we become more culturally proficient again that Equity piece just becomes a natural
thing for all of us to do um so again you'll see the equity lens is is on this screen as well and while we're using that Equity lens as we're planning our PD the PD we've been doing in the past um we've done a lot this year of really good things over the last several months with that dedicated um time that the school board approved for us to have just around this work it's been really amazing we've been able to really go deeper um than we have in the past um because of that and so what we're trying to do is what's here just making sure that our staff has the skill set that is needed to carry out this work and carry out what's in this plan to make sure that they have the
knowledge to make sure that they're cultivating an equitable environment in classrooms in buildings um in our district office on our buses in our cafeterias every environment in North pen and also always pulling in that social and emotional learning and mental health piece as well and then finally making sure that our environments are student centered and that our students again all students feel great no matter where they are in our school district and I think um Dr Bower you want to take that [Music] last absolutely uh next slide please so finally uh we end with a quote and then I will offer some uh parting words here on the presentation itself but my Angelo said that we all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry and we must understand that all the threads of
the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color um so you can see and if I can embellish for a moment uh you can understand why our presenters are here this evening uh so elequent so beautifully done uh I'm very proud to share the stage with them this evening uh Mrs jolle I apologize I believe you're your other child goes a bridal path not Montgomery I made a mistake um but thank you all so much um we are uh privileged to have you here in North pen you did a beautiful job articulating uh all those aspects so I hope this en encapsulates um the desires of the board in terms of equity I'm very proud of the work of everyone special thanks again to Mr Summers um and Dr Dietrich I don't know
if you have anything uh that you'd like to share at the end but Dr Dietrich was uh involved along the way and he and I reviewed the policy after each meeting as well um there's a lot of the superintendent sha um and it is something that he enthusiastically endorses with us as well so uh thank you everyone and I'll pass it to Dr dri and then Mr fesco and every one of those super superintendent shell statements is there for the right reason so this will happen uh we do need to take this to the full board and uh give it time uh at a work session uh so we look forward to that um again I'm just very thankful to all those that input on this are there any questions from board members thoughts or
um you know feedback for us go ahead Al what makes a process successful and not successful you know when your process is not Successful by the people who fail in the process not the people who succeed in the process necessarily so when we look at this policy we ought to be looking at the people who don't graduate from school uh we ought to be looking at the student especially that are getting C's and D's on a consistent basis in school and find out the reasons why they're getting C's and D's otherwise this is a wonderful policy uh I think it could just be a little bit more comprehensive thank you wonderful policy So to that end I would suggest um this is a very comprehensive policy I mean when you really look at like what
typically comes across um you know our our desk and this committee on these agendas um seven pages is there's a lot of meat here um certainly I think within the context of what we're doing targeting identifying students who are having um academic difficulty um or you know um is going to be a part of that plan as it probably already is you know at this point um I have a question and then I I did just want to make a little statement about it but um in terms of that annual Equity update uh it's really one of the most important parts of this policy because it's the accountability piece right it's and it's an intimidating Endeavor because it's going to open us up to criticism there's just no way around it we're not doing things
perfectly if we were we wouldn't need to do this um but that external pressure is going to play an important role in moving us forward um and then our our cultural proficiency plan when it was initiated had goals and benchmarks set um and it seems like it's been 10 years I've been on this board but roughly I think it's been about three years uh since we've had that cultural proficiency plan and set those benchmarks so I guess what I'm wondering is in conjunction with what we've already done the work that has already been laid down uh maybe Dr bow Dr dietr could speak to this is there an idea about when that first update is going to be made um publicly for the board should it be expected within this this school year that's a
great question so uh yeah there are components to this policy the audit um which I would Envision at this juncture and you're correct Mr Fusco this is year three of a three-year plan um so at this point we would engage in the audit um there are some tools that were suggested through our conversations I think Mr Goslin brought up a few and Dr Waters as well um and so I would Envision us doing the audit which would include a review and benchmarking of the current plan uh which is then guiding us into the new plan uh which you know it doesn't from a a um a systemic processes and strategic planning standpoint doesn't make sense to have a brand new plan every year but rather have a three-year plan and have updates and accountability and
benchmarking along the way um so I would Envision towards the end of let let's hope we see our way through uh the current challenges that we are all experiencing in school districts and and in the world um and that this summer um I think would be a reasonable time frame where we are able to uh give an evaluation and benchmarking of the current plan and then we'll in the in the fall I think our timetable uh three years ago I'm going to guess Dr Waters you may remember I'm gonna say it was presented to the board in October um so roughly nine months from now is when we would uh present a new plan to the board for approval uh for the next three years I hope I answered your question Mr Fusco yeah no
uh pretty directly actually um you know as I've said this policy is part of a commitment that as a board made to this community when we passed um our anti-racism resolution it's an extension of that cultural proficiency work that we started three years ago um this collaboration with psba it is groundbreaking you know and that when we did start this conversation and this conversation actually started like two years ago as I recall um maybe a year and a half ago when we started the the policy review process with uh Mr Summers before we even had a policy committee um you know when you listen to get into the language of this policy the fact that it's seven pages long it really differentiates itself from these other policies it's mey it's robust um you know and
it's something that most other districts are just not really ready to to tackle just yet you know it really requires to take a critical look at how we're serving all our students you know and ensure that we're not continuing practice practices that marginalize marginalize them um which is what this policy aims to do um as you said Dr Balor in a concise organized and systemic way um but we're ready to do this because of the groundw that was laid three years earlier um it'd be a little remiss didn't you know acknowledge those who've done some work before then too Dr rufo who's not with us anymore but who's certainly instrumental in a lot of this work you know the early work that uh Dr Waters has done but um you know I'd like to just
thank you all Dr Dietrich Dr Bower Dr Waters Mr gosin Mr Carter Mrs drle and everybody all the members of this team um for putting such a comprehensive plan together I really think like I said this accountability this is what will really make this work that rubber hit the road is the fact that we're really putting our money where our mouth is on this policy and saying we're not just this is not just rhetoric this is not just putting something out there to make the community feel good and for us to Pat ourselves on the back that we made a statement um this is going to be hard work this is going to come with criticism um but it is in the best interest of all the students in North pen and I'm proud to
have been a part of this effort so thank you all I would just like to Echo that thank you everyone for all the work that you've done it's it's a huge huge lift and um I'm excited to um have it come before the full board at the work session and have the community um more people tune into it and see what we've um been able to accomplish what you've been able to accomplish over the last couple years um putting this policy together it's um I it was a lot of work and thank you so much for doing it and Dr Waters I really I like the way you have put it making it um be just a natural part of how we think about and how we do everything moving forward um so it's not
like an extra thought right like it's just embedded in it and I think that's really great so thank you again for all of your work thank you all very much um so I I did say at the beginning that Mrs jolle got herself invited to a number of committees and that's what happens when you do a nice job so uh Mr Fusco I am I am uh recommending to this committee that uh we have a motion to move this to the February 9th work session where this group assuming they're willing will present again to the full board um and then it would eventually move for a first read and eventual adoption we're hopeful motion so moved seconded by Mr Rush all in favor I motion carries enthusiastically all right uh do we have any additional
topics for the committee this evening thank you to our presenters thank you very much once again we have any additional topics for the seeing none all right uh so quick summary of our agenda items to move to work session is uh our Equity policy um our next policy committee meeting um is scheduled for February 9th uh quite possibly at the ESC building we shall see I suppose right fingers crossed uh okay if there's nothing else uh motion to adjourn all right well we are done we'll be back uh at least the majority of us we'll be back in 15 minutes for finance policy committee committee Mee thank you Mr fesa we'll be ending our meeting right now and we'll be back with Finance thank you everyone
