Thank you guys for joining. We're gonna get started off with a policy committee meeting. This is my first policy committee meeting so please you know bear with me here and I appreciate Dr. Murphy on all of her help and assistance with the policy committee. So we are going to review a couple most of them are recommended by the PNN and our state statute so we will just get right to it because I know it's been a long night already. Alright so section 100 programs are there any comments on section 105.2 exemption from instruction? Any comments? Oh yes under delegation of responsibility it mentions the policy reads that the superintendent or designee shall notify parents yada yada. It doesn't matter how. How will the superintendent or designee notify parents and guardians of this policy? Can we

just put on a website? It's typically in our handbook and it's anytime we do any kind of blast it's included there as well. Okay any other questions? Okay actually under guidelines number four number four stipulates that the district and the employee shall tell students when they're to be excused but students in grade six through twelve they have the responsibility to leave when things are starting. What if I'm a sixth grader I'm a little bit absent-minded or not paying attention and if I just don't notice that the teacher is starting this I mean it's something I notice can I just get up and walk out is there any expectation that the teachers will inform the students hey now we're gonna start this. That's typically what would occur we don't okay thanks. I don't wait for eye

contact. All right next to the next one. I have one question on that so the exemption exemption from dissection activities that's not in the PNN anywhere but it looks like it's new here did we like it's highlighted do we just add that or is that existing? These are all recommendations from PSBA so we correlated over what the recommendations are for the PNNs and utilized it here we can look at it. I was just curious because it did like the exemption was you know like this the laws don't seem at all it just seems like an odd ad that I didn't know what the backstory was. To my knowledge that actually has been the expectation since I've been teaching so I don't know if it was in a law or policy or whatever regardless of whether

it being new to this policy it's always been like that. It wasn't in the previous version of this for us but since it had a school code citation I pulled it into this version. Okay all right thank you. Okay on to 119 current events. Yes the definition here current event is defined as a topic on which opposing points of view have been promulgated by responsible opinion so does that mean if there's a volcanic eruption that I want to talk about in class it's not a current event if it happened last night? Well it depends on the curriculum I would assume. You guys can handle that. Well I mean clearly it is literally a current event is it's just not one for this policy if no if responsible opinion has not promulgated opposing points of view

and does that really matter? Okay but the other thing is underdelegate. No I don't want to change I'm just curious but more importantly though under delegation of responsibility in the event a policy violation would occur the superintendent or designee shall notify the board regarding the incident what if the superintendent or designee isn't aware of it? How does that work? Because the policy doesn't allow for them not knowing it just says if it happens they got to tell everyone well. Yeah I just yeah I'd say this is like addressing the situations that are heard of and just like the status quo. But it's not phrased that way so this is mainly a question I guess for a solicitor because the policy doesn't say once they learn about it says once it happens and even though we

generally hear about it what if we don't? We could possibly change that if that's okay once they learn about it or you know. Regarding a incident yeah yeah okay I'm fine with that thank you. Since we're typing on there there's one small typo I wasn't gonna point out but if we're modified go for it. It's a third line down fairly all sides one word. I did have questions about the definition but I turned to say to something that Alex and I missed the conclusion of it or just how the whole definition came into being. But whenever I looked at other definitions I came up with important events that are happening in the world, political news about events happening now, recent news and developments that are happening locally, nationally, internationally. So those are the three definitions

I looked up and they're so different than the definition there that I just don't understand why it was used. Yeah we collected this from the PSBA recommendations for PNN for current events. If there is something that you would recommend us changing it to we can definitely look at it before we do approval for next week but it has to be obviously okay by Jocelyn. That's the definition the PSBA recommended. Yeah it's just the PSBA recommendation and it is not grounded in any statute or dictionary or anything like that so you really have pretty wide discretion obviously within confines of what the word means but you could change it to be a little bit more broad. I'm not sure where they got it maybe it was usually when PSBA puts out a policy they're getting like

comments from different school districts across the state like this is a problem and so maybe the current events that in you know create most discussion are ones that have opposing viewpoints and that's where they came up with the policy but the citations here are only to the authority for the board to create reasonable rules and regulations so whatever definition you think works best for your community is perfectly fine so you know I do think if you want it to be a little bit more broad like anything falling outside of the curriculum that is a current event I think the definition that you read off sounded like a good definition so you certainly want to share that and so long as it was discussed at before the first reading we can make those edits. Okay so

send over the recommendations okay both myself and okay okay any other comments okay 122 extracurricular activities any comments okay 122.1 non-curriculum related non-school sponsored student initiated groups any comments okay section 200 204 attendance any comments no okay 218.1 I did see a typo in 122.1 non yeah non-curriculum there's an extra just grab that real quick okay on the attendance on 204 I guess I'm just curious does anyone know the sort of back store so we're students just leaving going to charter if they got called out and do we have that regularly occur here do we see this being an impact yeah I'm sorry one of the reasons that students often have gone to charter is because because we were starting to bring truancy and that's actually across districts so this language was added to stop

the jump of from a brick-and-mortar into charter because you would have students with truancy issues at the charter school as well with that tuition following the students so this is across the state so it stops that process so what does that look like in practice if we call a student truant and they say fine I'm gonna leave and we say no you can't go talk to a judge or how does that like how does that work so what happened recently is the charter school actually asked for the attendance and we reviewed to make sure that they're not habitually truant we've set up multiple safeguards to get to a point where you're having attendance conferences and things like that with the families that are required as well so it will stop the avoiding going to the

magistrate and avoiding school to just go to the next cyber education school and do the same behaviors does it make sense to have a definition of what habitually true and is or is it yes it is yes we have an obligation on our truancy notifications that we send to parents to put on there that you can't jump to a cyber charter so we Jen and her team we redid all of our truancy notifications and it's worked so far we've actually had a cyber charter declined somebody from moving over and that was a beautiful day it followed the rules and it was it was nice worked out would they go like before the local magistrate if you're habitually true yes well that's why if a judge determines it's in their best interest that would be if

the parent pushed I still want my child to go to to cyber school in our case judge mellograin could make the recommendation that they would still be permitted to go Mike's worked with them so he could probably he's he worked with judge mellograin on this yeah I had a conversation with judge mellograin and just we discussed the process so whenever we get to a point if a parent doesn't like our determination that we're not allowing a child to go cyber or we work with cyber school to reject that then we would set up an appointment with him and we would he would hear he would hear that their their plea to go all right thank you okay 218.1 weapons actually I actually have a different question on this and maybe I shouldn't ask this and

give people ideas but under the definition of weapons I noticed it omits any reference to a substance what if I brought anthrax to school is that not considered a weapon we could we could add that if you really want to I think but I don't know that I'm necessarily asking because we should add it I'm just honestly curious because if a student did something like that if they brought something that was dangerous to other people but didn't fall under one of these things and I would say that I don't know it's not well that's my point it wouldn't be an implementer it's a substance so I'm just wondering include but not limited to I mean wouldn't that be yeah there is that here's the other thing too one of the reasons this policy has been

updated is because the law change this year requiring notification of all parents and families and staff in a building where there's been a weapon and weapon is defined by statute we used to have a more expansive definition that was just a local based definition and what we want to do in order to make sure that we're complying with just the law as it's written we're gonna have a separate category that won't be called weapon it would be called other dangerous instrument substances in our handbook so that it could still carry the same type of consequence but would not result in like a weapons notification which is very specifically defined by statute make sense thank you I did have another question this is on page 300 guidelines the building principal shall annually inform staff students and

parents yada yada again how that's in the handbook and or online no no that's no no go ahead I'll let you finish your thought so under yeah that's kind of what I'm thinking I just want to find out how we're doing it under guidelines when we have to annually inform staff students and parents just again handbook it's always done through the handbook and then we do an annual notice of all of our policies requirement too okay and then the last one last question I have the second paragraph under guidelines mentions that staff members and students observing or becoming aware of weapons should report the same to the building principle do we want to leave it as should or do we want to change that to shall because if I'm a teacher and I notice a

weapon I say yeah I should report it but I'm not gonna I would think that'd be a kind of a bad thing I'm just throwing that out as an idea that's what I'm thinking and then do we want at the end of the sentence there's the word immediately do we want to I mean if I cannot do it immediately I guess I could always text what if I don't have my phone with me like I left at my car tonight should it be would that be run inside and tell someone should we say as soon as possible is there a better phrase I think immediately makes sense but that should be shall because immediately is just right as soon as you can right then no immediately is immediately right now okay thank you okay I'm

fine with that it's just if I'm a staff member and my employee adopts that same policy and I'm thinking well wait a minute what's immediately mean I mean as soon as I find out do I have half a second to tell my building principle I think it's so as much urgency is probably I want that to be more stringent than less stringent because it's practical then it goes back to your should we're like I mean I'm gonna go to my car first and put my lunch in there and then I'm gonna and I would say as soon as possible I'd still I'd say immediately okay then I have still violated that policy that's my point well I would disagree okay I guess one other question on this just for the new edition page two instance

and buildings that share a campus so PV in the middle school are considered share campus so I notice will go out if something happens in the middle school or PV vice versa to the other building okay will it explain that it occurred at the other building so I mean just you little kid accidentally brings a toy weapon to PV you know the middle school families will be notified small child brought you know replica dinosaur pistol to okay anyway 320 freedom of speech by employees any comment okay 805.1 relations with law enforcement agencies any comment okay 805.2 school security personnel any comment any public comment any public comment all right that is all for the policy committee meeting again I think dr. Murphy from for walking me through all of this and go watch Paul and

you're gonna send me a current events definition okay thank you oh good cool
