Uh, and ours holiday concert is also December

0099th at 7 p.m. Do >> you guys have any questions? Seems to be a lot going on. Good job. So the CSO is getting a steam night And um so CSO is an organization that not a lot of people know about. It's international and it's meant to increase student activity and interest in STEM and it is run by students and every year the goal is to complete at least one action plan where students work to get the community involved in some sort of activity. We have eight members currently, four juniors, two sophomores, and two seventh graders. Um last year we had um multiple visits to elementary school where we um took them in robots and we taught them how to program them and then we gave them some challenges like drawing different shapes and um

010they really enjoyed it and it was really nice to get to work with them. We're planning a steam night. And you might be asking yourself, what is steam? Well, it's science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. And it will be on Friday, February 20th from 5 to 7:00 p.m. And it would be in the Philipsburg Oola area of Middle School in the gymnasium and the cafeteria. And anyone is welcome. It's family. It's a family event and it's for an education. And what would be there? These aren't set in stone, but there could be stuff like slime face paint robots, boat and penny activity, a dissected pig, a 3D pen, motor rocket, magnetic tiles, build a structure, and we were also contacting Penn State entomology and astronomy and >> Shapers Creek and We me and another CSO

011Macy Bush attended uh a national conference in Washington DC over this past quarter and I'm CS to attend the 10year step anniversary convention in Washington DC. Our first day in DC, we spent walking around and observing the monuments like the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. When we attended this trip, the majority of the museums were closed due to a government shutdown. Fortunately, we were given the opportunity to attend the Holocaust Museum. There we learned about behind the scenes logistics. The convention was a two-day event that had keynote speakers both days. The first day, our keynote speakers were the CEO and founders of the STEM Heist program. They spoke a lot about the upbringing of STEM into the educational community. The second day, our keynote speaker was Billy Almond, who was a motivational speaker

012and talked about how to achieve your dreams and goals. Besides how the speaker was, there was an area referred to as the playground where STEM businesses had stand set up. We walked around and listened to their ideas and emotions on how to implement STEM into learning environments. This was a great opportunity for us because we found lots of ideas that we wanted to push to have in our STEM night. Between the speakers, we were dismissed in breakout rooms. In multiple of our breakout rooms, we discussed the importance of durable skills. These durable skills include leadership, communication, collaboration, and listening. We learned that many people being fired currently do not contain these skills needed for the workforce. And the speaker stated that the solution to the lack of these skills is to implement these skills into

013classroom lessons. In conclusion, our trip to DC was educational, informational, and eye opening in many aspects. This was our first time attending an all adult convention with no other students besides the CSN's. Because of this, we were given the opportunity to network with others throughout the nation. Thank you for your time. Are there any questions? >> Think you did a good job. So upcoming >> upcoming event in February, right? >> And the CSO convention was actually paid for by CSO International. So they played for hotels, conference rooms, food, everything. So, um, other than this cost to the district, >> great information, great activities for students. Thanks, Mr. Groves. Thanks, students. Did a good job. All right. I think this is a presentation that you guys enjoy. So, we got our mania boards tonight. We have

014two boards to hand out. Yep. Um, so we have a staff member and we have a professional staff member teacher. We'll start with tonight with our staff member award. Uh, this award has been established to recognize PO's outstanding staff members for their dedication, excellence in their positions and professionalism. Staff members will be nominated and selected based on the following criteria. They make a difference in their PO school. They go above and beyond. Excel as a team player. Uh, has mounting mounting pride and is committed to the vision of PO. Our first one tonight uh for our staff member is Gary Lewis switch here. >> Yeah. Three, two, one. Jeez. All right. Thank you. >> Congratulations, Gary. Appreciate Right. Second one for the night is going to be for our Mounty Pride Teacher Award. This award

015has been established to recognize PO's outstanding educators for their education, excellence in instruction, and professionalism. Uh some of the criteria, excellence in the classroom, motivation, leadership, community service, dedication, and professionalism. Um, and with that tonight, uh, we have, help me out, Woody. >> Doug, Sanki, because I lost my paper here. Doug, come on up. >> Thank you, sir. >> Three, two, one. Jeez. >> Doug, congratulations. Thanks for hiring me 29 years ago. Congratulations, gentlemen. For you. >> Thank you, sir. >> Appreciate all you do. >> Thank you. >> Y >> Doug is also our baseball coach, but somebody hired back in 1957. >> 97. >> Hasn't left us yet. >> There you go. >> Good job. Good job. >> Good job. >> Can you tell us your record? I cannot tell you. No, >> you

016know it. You are I don't know. >> Oh, I don't know. >> You guys are welcome to stay. >> 170 wins. I don't know how many bosses. >> We don't. Good job. >> You guys are welcome to stay, >> but I know you got lesson plans to >> I got work to go to. >> Congratulations, you guys. >> Thank you. Thank you. All right, more about the high school. I feel like a proud mom right now. Um, so they literally said almost everything on my list, but I did want to tell you about the academic hathlon. So, our high school um academic team recently went to a competition in Penn's Valley and they came in third place. The categories of the competition were essay art, literature, and social science. And we had medal winners. Grace

017Henry, our speaker tonight, being one of them. She had a silver medal in art. Nick Webster had a bronze medal in art. Dave Richie a silver medal in literature. And Nick Matuicha a gold medal in essay. And the second highest overall scholastic score at the competition. Additional information about the high school. Good evening everyone. Uh they also stole some of my thunder, but we did have uh so winter sports are in full swing. Uh we had meet the Mounties the other night with a great turnout of fans and parents and supporters for our our winter sports. Um we have boys and girls basketball, wrestling for boys and girls, unified botchi competitive spirit and sideline cheer that comes to basketball and wrestling events. Um we're in the scrimmage season right now. Uh and our first uh

018regular season, actually tomorrow's scrimmage that they had up there. That's the girls basketball scrimmage is at home tomorrow. So, but games will start next week. Um so, uh we have season passes available in my office. We have uh for adults are $30 and students are $20 for the winter season. Thank you. >> Going to represent the middle school today. As the middle school's been working hard, we've been gathering our MTSS tier 2 data, doing that through surveys and through screeners, making sure that our students are well academically and emotionally. When that information comes in, then we provide supports for them through tier 2 interventions. We had a food drive and gathered 255 items that were donated to the YMCA. We had 127 high honoral students when our report cards came out and 82 honoral. And

019as they presented, our band and choir students participated in the CMEA festival and are getting ready for their holiday concerts coming up in about two weeks. I'll be speaking about Oola Hills Elementary. Um, recently we had students from St. Francis University come to our building and they presented a hands-on science lesson with our fifth graders. Traditionally they did it with fourth graders, but since the PSSA has now moved the fifth grade, we moved this activity with our fifth graders. And there's a picture there. This the students were really engaged. The lesson was on the effects of temperature on glow sticks. So those college students that come in do a really nice job with our students. Um the students of the month for October, our theme, I told you before, each month we have a different

020theme. So these students were chosen specifically for being respectful. Um I know all the buildings did this. Um but we also participated in a food drive in honor of kindness day. So at Oil Mills Elementary, we gathered over 700 items that we were able to donate to the local food bank. Um this is just a picture of Mrs. McMullen's class. We did a little challenge and her class brought in the most items. Um, and upcoming we have a title one parent night on December 16th. We invite all of our families. The staff signs up and reads books. They make ornaments. There's a snack. Um, Santa Claus makes an appearance and this year also the Grinch is making an appearance. So, it's a fun night. >> Good evening everybody. Um, PE. So, we also have our

021students of the month in there. Uh over just like all the other buildings, we had a food drive also that was put on by our student council. Their goal was 600 items. We collected over a,000 items. We actually had one of our student council members who uh shot a deer, harvested it back and gave it out to uh local families. So that was pretty neat to see from a from a fifth grade student to be able to do that. because we met our goal. If you want to read there, because we met our goal, the challenge was if we collected our goal would make 600 items, I have to do the pool bear plunge challenge on December 6. So, looking forward to that one. Um, we had our family ec night. I explained ECIR uh

022over the summer to everybody, but we had a night with our kindergarten first grade parents and our teachers uh took the parents into the classrooms and actually went through the lessons with them to show what the kids go through every day in the classrooms. During the first marking period, we had 105 students with perfect attendance. Uh, which is great. I mean, that's about 25% of our students put perfect attendance, you know, getting back in. Lots of germs in the buildings, the weather changing. So, that was really good. And I also want to give a shout out to our autistic support staff. Um, and our not only our teachers, but also our par profofessionals that do a really good job of providing meaningful lessons to our students on a daily basis and helping them learn not

023just academic skills, but social skills, relationship skills as well. I just wanted to touch briefly, November is homelessness awareness month. So, um it's it's a month that they do um EPIA, which is the state homelessness monitoring system. They do a lot of information that they put out about resources and also responsibilities. Um, one of our responsibilities and all of the schools in our area is to make sure that we are doing outreach to families who maybe are experiencing homelessness, make sure that we're getting them um, identified and being able to reach out to them and offer them some services. Um, this I just included like the different categories that can qualify. One of the things that we're seeing right now in our area is that we have a high number of families that are doubled

024up. So that means that they were either evicted or they had to leave their home for a reason that was not their choice and they're now living with a relative. So that's probably the thing that we see the most in our area. Um I went and did a training with the bus drivers as well just because they're sort of on the front lines and they can identify. Um and Fullington donated, they gathered up their employees, they did their own food drive. They did six um laundry baskets full of food and um so one of our like six of our PO families from each representative cross buildings are going to receive those tomorrow. So that was very generous of them and kind. They didn't need to do that. Um special education, we're working very hard to

025get everything lined up for our December one count. all of our paperwork is in and finalized, which I think is a first that it's been done this early. So, I'm really proud of teachers for making that push to do that. And then just recognizing that in each of our buildings right now, there's initiatives going on to try to um include some real life or real world skills for our students. So, at PE, they have a coffee cart that they do called Young Mugs. at OM their life skill students are doing the shopping for the positive behavior support system and they're filling orders. Um the middle school assists with recycling and delivering the backpacks and they're also going to be starting to do the PO print shop here and then of course at the high school

026they have the mounting market. So just trying to build those tasks of daily living and essential skills into the programs that they're doing. I have a couple things uh just for mine. Our year's flying by here. So, I think we're on day, if I'm not mistaken, principles day 63 or something on your uh on our daily agendas. So, third of our school year as we head into the holiday season here. And so, the the year's is well on its way. Um did want to report out and just thank I know Nancy Lamb is not on tonight or not present for a meeting tonight. Uh we did just want to reach out and thank her for her years of service on the school board. Uh all the time and effort that she's put in over the

027years and we also want to thank Dustin Manarchic. Uh this will be his last meeting tonight. And so we want to thank Dustin and uh for all his time and service and energy uh over the last couple years as fulfilling his role. So we say thank you. Thank you. >> Uh as we finish up uh this round of board meetings, we will meet next Wednesday to reorganize. Uh let uh president start talking about what committees people would head and have an interest in it. And a big topic will uh be something to think about what days do meetings work for people, how many meetings we should have. Uh we got a lot to cover in the next probably three months to make some uh important decisions. So that'll be the input as a whole of

028the board. Uh to me that's how it would be decided. uh whatever the majority of the board works for them because there's other commitments by everybody. So, put that put that one in your head to be thinking about for next Wednesday. And what time are we reorganizing? >> 7 organizing. So, having a meeting >> special voting meeting at 7:30. >> So, we will reorganize uh more of an executive session. It's not a public meeting at 7. 039an executive session prior to the committee meeting for theformational meeting and personnel. The motion to approve the October 27th, 25 meeting on the consent agenda. And we had all the reports and we got down to number eight. discussion chair under will be under reports. >> We'll go down to that. Uh I'd like to bring up for discussion. Uh we have several scenarios that have started to be presented and one of them that has got a little bit of discussion has been the fifth grade moving from the elementary back to the middle school. and uh I want to see where the board is if we're going to still you still want to pursue and examine and possibilities um the information that I've gathered out of the office um not to persuade one way or the other

040on my part uh economically there is doesn't appear that there's any advantage uh might be slim disadvantage because you might be looking at uh adding a personnel to it. So input from the board whether this is something to be pursued or dropped like some opinions >> to just to clarify but keeping it where it is versus you know changing things. There's not really going to be anything financially negative or positive to that. We bring up the fifth grade to be in the sixth grade. Presently for the coming year, we will have three fifth grades in Oola, three fifth grades there. We come here, we'll have six together. Educationally, uh some people will say it's an advantage because everybody gets to collaborate all the grade level teachers. economically uh doesn't appear there's any advantage at all

041and we don't know what the transportation kicker would be to go with it could could be a little more costly we we don't ever really tried to run those numbers >> I think that a lot of parents have expressed that they do not want to see their kids move up so if it's not if it doesn't make sense financially I just look at it from a community relations standpoint, why would we make that move? just for even to speak up on my own. Uh from the presentation there back in October, um in order for fifth grade to come to the middle school, there was potentially one savings um in those scenarios, but by the time you looked at or we reviewed our needs for like guidance counselor to add to go back to what it

042would have been when fifth grade was here, there would have been uh the potential to add uh for guidance mental health needs, food service. um there would be some shifting and then it would also affect our special education uh needs here as far as staffing at the middle school. So um when we looked at that as a whole picture, we don't see there being a savings when you look at all all facets of it. say as the head administrator, do you see any benefits, true benefits of having everyone in one one place or is it something that leave as it is? >> Um, I think we have a so we're going to be looking at a lot of areas K to 12 from a priority standpoint of where we need to be for next year.

043Um, there would be savings for room at your elementary schools would be from those classrooms coming here.
