001good evening I'd like to call this meeting to order and we'll begin with the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all good evening everyone and welcome to the Radnor Township School District school boards regular business meeting of Tuesday January 24th 2023. the board met an executive session on the following dates and discussed the noted topics December 13 2022 was legal and January 17 2023 was legal and personnel and now it's my pleasure to turn the meeting over to our student Representatives so welcome this evening Sammy Sophie and our newest student representative Nico good evening everyone I hope you've all had a fantastic start to the New Year rounder
002high school has been bustling with activities since students returned after break although for the next few days students will put a lot on pause in order to give their full attention to possibly the most stressful time of the week midterm week special time of the year despite the hours of studying and test taking students will have to do over the next few days there is still much to look forward to for example the seniors will have the classic senior semi this Saturday the 28th this year's theme is Mardi Gras complete with masks the festive ones not the coveted ones green and purple balloons and lots and lots of beads the dance will be held in the high school Lobby and give seniors the chance to celebrate going into their final semester speaking of dances the
003rhs spend through their annual band ball which looked just as fun as it sounds thanks to the hard work of drum major gwenevere Dunn rounder Valley Country Club was decked out in Candyland decorations last Sunday the 15th it's hard to do it justice with just words but the foam lollipops chains of paper candy balloon Towers colorful Square paths truly transformed the space into a real life Candyland the dance celebrates the rhs band community and allows the students to spend time together without playing their instruments switching over to sports this year marked the beginning of rounder's first ever all-girl squash team the team coached by a history teacher Mr Wright consists of eight young women who will play matches through the winter including at U.S at the U.S High School Nationals in the coming weeks they
004will play a doubles match at the Specter Center the U.S squash Headquarters downtown also while I haven't had a chance to visit the newly renovated pool I've heard it's amazing and the rhs swim team was certainly thrilled to have their first home meet there this Friday this past Friday against Conestoga now since I know that there's an important basketball game to get to I wanted to keep it short so I'm now going to pass it over to Sophie good evening everyone it's been a long time since we've seen you all and I hope you had an amazing winter break and starting the new year strong although January revolves as Sami said around the dreaded midterms every day there is something to look forward to going on at the high school last month the girls basketball
005team started off their season with a bang in their opening game they won against Westchester East outside of physical games the girls team hosted a basketball clinic for elementary and middle school girls there the team went through drills exercises and a few fun mini games however one of the highlights of the Girls season was so far their amazing trip to South Carolina over the break the girls headed down to Charleston where JV and varsity each played three games the team still has a lot left in their season to look forward to and as you all probably know with an astonishing record of 16-0 the boys basketball team is playing what is likely their best season yet the team is number one in the district 5A class and has been Unstoppable since the beginning I could
006go on and list all of their wins but there are literally too many to count like the girls the boys also took a trip over winter break to Orlando Florida there they played three games won all of them and were crowned the KSA Holiday Tournament Champs tonight as you all know they will face their Rivals Lower Marion which will be definitely a heated game the high school also recently inducted a new sport Bocce Bocce is an Italian bowling game that recently became popular in the U.S not only is the sport a varsity Pia double a sport but also a Special Olympics unified sport last week the team had their first home match in radnor's gym where lots of students teachers and community members came to watch the energy in the gym was high at all
007times cheering for the new team the team has their first official match next week against Archbishop Carroll last week the town the township hosted its annual MLK event at Radner Elementary the scene was bustling with different activities ranging from card making to clothing sorting stations the township worked with a few High School clubs including cradles to crayons and students helping students it was so nice to see lots of high schoolers community members board members and even the superintendent himself to come out and help their community last month in December the junior student council held their annual holiday letter writing event this is their second year doing the event where students can write cards during lunches all of the cards go to the homeless and those with food insecurity in Philly all grades were welcome to
008make cards and the event lasted for up to two weeks finally I'd like to introduce our newest member Nico Ryan who will be taking the position of sophomore student rep and unfortunately Sammy will be leaving Nico is a sophomore who's in the high school who's part of who's vice president of The Debate Club president of the Rock Climbing Club and part of the ethics Bowl team and I'd like to pass over for Nico to say a few words well uh my speech certainly isn't as long but uh um as you all know my name is Nicholas Bryan I'm a sophomore here at Radnor I'm just very grateful for this opportunity to serve as a new student rep and I'm excited for things to come thank you all thank you Sammy we will see you next
009month for your sign off thank goodness we had an excuse to extend your stay with us and Sophie thank you for your report and Nico welcome we look forward to your tenure as a student representative to the board thank you for being interested in this position and with that I will turn the evening over to our superintendent for his report I hope it won't be the whole evening you're turning over to me um yeah just a quick update a quick report I want to give good evening it's good to see everyone uh and and Nico welcome it's great to have you and Sam yes we'll have a chance to thank you next month with our recognitions for all your service uh Nico being a rock climber that's pretty good because sometimes I feel like I'm
010just Holding On by a finger so you can help me with that uh but we're excited to have you join the school board as a student representative um so if you mentioned the bocce the bocce was really an awesome uh moment for our high school it was so neat to see the Unified sports activity and then to see so many of our students that were in the stands and and our coaches who were coaching teams at the time uh girls boys uh you know we're all there watching the bocce supporting all of our students it was really a wonderful moment and it's a it's a great new activity that we have at the school for my remarks tonight I just wanted to mention and highlight that tonight on our agenda we have the approval for
011the board of two additional counseling positions this has been a district goal of ours I think it has spanned well over a year it's been a and it's been something we've talked about well beyond a year but we have have studied for for more than a year our College our College counseling and our College and Career counseling process and our counseling process at the high school through that study and Analysis in working with an outside consultant working with our high school counselors who I want to give a lot of credit for the knowledge and the willingness they brought to the table to look and to study how we can improve our our counseling program at the high school we're excited tonight that we have on the agenda the approval of two additional counselors those two
012additional counselors are going to be part of a program that we're developing they will help develop that will give more Focus to the College and Career planning for our students give more individualized attention and more Focus also to the social emotional needs of our students as they go through high school we really believe as we look at Public School models that this is a model that is is going to be seen as unique to Public Schools as we looked at different models across not only our state but across the country and how to best prepare and support our kids in this College and Career ready process and also to give the kids the emotional social emotional supports they need we're excited for this new structure so I have on the slide there it's on our
013website that can share more details for any parents that are tuning in we're hoping we're planning for this to go into effect and begin in the fall and the new two additional counselors will will become on board now with our approval tonight to help set up this new structure so something I'm very grateful to the board for making this a priority and I know our counseling department and all of us are excited for the future and I just want to give a quick update on our building a new iPhone Elementary as a school district and as a school board we have moved forward with hiring an architect to begin the process of building a new iPhone elementary through our long-term facilities plan we identified we have been developing a long-term facilities plan for all of
014our buildings in that process we recognize that ithan Elementary we we studied very hard whether to renovate what are the options what we could do with the needs and the needs were so great that we came to the conclusion that what is what is best for the student the community and for us as a district as we move forward is to build a new iPhone it's the best use of our tax dollars as we move forward so we haven't made decisions yet on where on the campus that building will be we have just formed a steering committee I want to thank those members of our community Administration and staff that volunteered to be part of a steering committee the steering committee met for just the first time on I think the 18th I think it's
015up there on the slideshow and we will have a website that will list every time the steering committee the website is already up and running that says you know for our new iPhone building and we will post every time the steering committee meets and give monthly updates here in the facilities committee as well with the school board as we move forward on this process and it's an exciting opportunity for us to make some significant improvements and finally we'll see many of those trailers that are that are over at I can be removed from the campus as well as we move forward so and then upcoming events uh there is many busy things I do you know good luck next week our high schoolers at his midterm week we know uh next week and uh but
016there's um oh it's this week oh it starts tomorrow that's right it's tomorrow it's this week oh my God I keep thinking I'm in last week it is this week thank you sorry good luck uh go home what are you doing here um in all seriousness you know you can leave go study um and uh but upcoming events we have a lot of exciting things happening in the district and that's all I have tonight okay thank you very much Dr Batchelor and that brings us to public comment as per board policy 6 the board provides an opportunity at each regular board meeting for eligible participants to comment on matters of concern official action or deliberation which are or may be before the board public comment can be made either in person or by telephone recording
017when circumstances prevent a Community member from attending the board meeting for details on how to make public comment by telephone recording please visit rtsd.org backslash board public commenters should State their full name and town and may make one comment per public comment period for no more than four minutes per comment Administration will respond to general questions raised during public comments sometime after the meeting parents and Guardians with specific questions or comments about their child's educational experience are encouraged to contact their child's teacher and or building principal is there any public comment in the room this evening come on up and we'll we'll give you a very brief tutorial as to how to use the microphone and then you have four minutes to make your comments just just push the button there and when the light
018goes on red you're good to go just give us your name and town and then you can begin okay hello I'm Jocelyn Gilmore from Wayne um good evening it's my privilege um as a parent of two Radner Township students and to speak to you tonight and the reason is to voice support for the Radner Township School District librarians I'm not alone I'm speaking on behalf of several others whether they're in person tonight at tonight's meeting or they're remote including Duncan Gilmore Terry Baker Josh baker Jessie Knox Scott Weibel Becky Riley Julie Hartman Joanna Miriam Gene putanaya Suraj bhutanaya Wendy Branton Natasha Provo yes back nipple Jen marzolf Kristen Decker Meg safel Amy Epstein Arlette Luda Roberts Shobha Sharma Missy white Deb Brown Sherry Fiore and Leo black our school our school district librarians they have
019done and they continue to do a great service for the students the families and the whole community of the school district the librarian's core roles as special teachers in the elementary school or as support and resources to the many learning situations in middle school and high school that's clear more so what we wanted to give voice to is how the Librarians do their jobs they tirelessly support all of the students in our district so we wanted to voice that we're grateful for both the roles the rotsd Librarians play in our students learning but also the individuals in these roles and we want to say thank you thank you to the library leads and thank you to their staffs and for modeling the values of diversity equity and inclusion we support you in this and we're
020very grateful that our students have the opportunity to learn from you that's it thank you for your time thank you Miss Gilmore thank you very much for your remarks is there anybody else who has public is there any more public comment in the room this evening seeing none is there any recorded public comment no okay thank you very much we will now move to the report from board committees and we'll begin with the curriculum committee report from Dr Babson okay good evening everyone so the board curriculum committee met twice this month the first meeting was held on Tuesday January 3rd we'll welcome back existing Committee Member Sarah Dunn and Liz Duffy and welcome new Committee Member Brad Moore we also thanked Lydia Solomon for many years of dedicated service on the committee the focus of
021the January 3rd meeting was twofold to present the 2324 RMS program of studies and cover discussion of the instructional calendars for next year in the following academic years our second meeting was held two weeks later on the 17th and focused on three items the rhs pathways to graduation the rhs program of studies and continuing discussion of the instructional calendars with a focus on improving the final draft of next year's instructional calendar see consent agenda items 9.02 through 9.04 and 10 and 11 all inclusive our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday February 14th at 5 pm thank you for your report Dr Babson and we'll turn to the facilities committee with Ms Monahan who is chair committee met on January 10th at that meeting we welcomed Lydia Solomon back to the committee and thanked Amy Goldman
022for her service this past year uh and Sarah and I and Susan are remain on the board on the committee uh at the January 10th meeting we received an update on the rhs accessibility and wellness project also an update on the new iPhone Elementary and third on a neighbor on neighboring projects specifically the South Wayne stormwater project that's occurring across from the administration building the storm water project at the North Wayne Field parking lot and the Brandywine Realty um breaking ground across from the high school on King of Prussia Road there are no items on the agenda our next facilities meeting is scheduled for February 7th and on the side I do want to share as just a reiterating what Dr Batchelor had shared with the iPhone steering committee who met on January 18th to
023kick off the new ithen project and the next meeting for that steering committee is February 1st and there will be as was mentioned specific updates placed on the website under District initiatives so feel free to check that as we move forward thank you Miss Monahan and that brings us to our finance committee Report with Mr Moore who's chair of that committee all right thank you the finance committee met on January 10th we also had a membership change Dr Babson was thanked for his service and uh Nancy Monahan was cycling back on to the committee continuing with me as chair Lydia Solomon as Vice chair and Susan Stern and our student representative Akshay Sethi on our financial action items on the consent agenda I'll just point out a few highlights in addition to many of the
024routine items that you're accustomed to under contracts and agreements we do have the renewal of workman's compensation coverage that's actually coming in a little lower than it had been the previous year so it's appreciated that we were able to get a different and lower rate for that PSX Inc that contract is for the new access control system I think we all have acknowledged that our access control system in our buildings is we have gotten a lot out of the useful life of that system and now it's time for another one good news though we are funding that with a safety security Grant from the state so there's no impact on the budget for that perhaps down the line maintenance could add a little bit to the budget but The Upfront cost is something that we're
025not going to be asking the taxpayers to handle and then finally related to the taxpayers we do have on the agenda uh one other item I'll highlight nine six this is the approval of the Act One resolution for 2023-24 as you may remember we did one of these a year ago if approved that would state to the taxpayers and the Commonwealth that we will not go above the Act One Index this year which is 4.1 we do qualify for some exceptions that would bring us potentially up to a 433 or so I believe is what Mr Pauline gave us as a calculation for that and uh I'm sorry there's just one other thing I want to say about that oh and so also if that were not approved um our Administration would have to rush
026to create a preliminary budget um as Act One requires so but if the if this does pass then the administration does not have to rush and prepare a preliminary budget they can do that on their own time frame all right uh the next finance committee meeting is expected to be February 7th thank you thank you Mr Moore for your always very thorough finance committee report very good thank you so much and Ms Duffy policy committee rundown is thank you the policy committee met on Tuesday January 10th we welcomed Miss Stern as our new Vice chair and the old vet Miss Amy Goldman coming back on circling back on to help us out so um not old like veteran Pro oh my God oh my God I should know this former anyway seasoned yes um we
027have a total of nine policies that we put forth well to the um everybody moved away from you yeah there are nine policies on the um consent agenda tonight um for our first reads policy 602 which is budget planning 603 budget preparation 604 budget adoption and and 6 20 fun balance these are part of the normal cycle review the minor changes were around formatting an addition of an act one reference and some minor cleanup we have five policies for second read one of which was a repeal these policies are 812 Insurance 822 automated external defibrillator 826 conflict of interest and Gifts 908 relations with parents and Guardians and then 8 13 which was other insurance which is the repeal these policies are under review as part of the normal review cycle our next meeting is
028Tuesday February 7th thank you Miss Duffy Mr jubileeer be careful how you identify your colleagues up here to my right is our new Vice chair the very young and uh but but very seasoned Liz Duffy um thank you Dr Babson who was our our chair uh prior is still remaining on our committee and Bradley Moore as well we met on January 10th and we introduced and we had two new members of our committee one was our student Claudia Myers who's a junior she will be our student representative and we welcomed administrative liaison Dr Jim Kearney to his new role in that what we discussed is the approved Pennsylvania School boards Association 2023 legislative platform thanks to many members of our board for their extensive involvement in helping to not only participate in the crafting or
029the deliberate around that but we had some of our initiatives included in the approved platform we also discussed the transition on in Pennsylvania with the general assembly obviously we all know there is a new governor Josh Shapiro from Montgomery County we also have a new state representative who over uh part of her district is in Radner and certainly where we're sitting today and she happened to be someone who sat in this very seat several years ago Lisa Borowski so we welcome her to that role and look forward to working with her in her new position there wasn't much of a legislative update because the general assembly was in essence getting back together I can't think of the word reorganizing as they head into the new new legislative session so there's all bills have to be
030reintroduced that were introduced last year and didn't get passed so we'll have much more to report in our next meeting and follow-up and finally we had initial conversation about our plan everyone agreed need we want to absolutely move forward with our annual legislative breakfast we were just discussing broad broad Strokes about some of the things we may want to include and or change up because it was very popular and everyone agreed that conversation will continue our next meeting will be February 14th at seven o'clock very much Mr Julia and and that brings us to our consent agenda although board action is required it is generally unnecessary to hold discussion on these items with the consent of all board members they are therefore grouped and approval is given in one Motion in the event a board
031member wants to discuss any item the board president will move it to an appropriate place on the agenda does anybody have anything they'd like to pull this evening at 9.6 and 11.7 okay then I'd like to entertain a motion to approve items 8.01 through 13.02 except for 9.6 and 11.7 can I get a motion so moved oh second okay Miss Solomon made the motion Ms Stern is seconding all those in favor okay and that looks like a nine to nothing vote I will turn over 9.6 to Mr Moore for discussion thank you in the interest of time I'll refer the board to comments I made at the finance committee meeting about the Act One resolution hopefully you have had an opportunity to view those um the briefest summary I can come up with is I
032believe that we should potentially be somewhere between 4.1 and 4.33 for our Revenue generation this year I know Mr Pauline and Ms Klaus are in the audience and are hopefully not panicking that they are likely to have to prepare a preliminary budget I think this is likely to pass but I wanted to make a note for the record that I do think with what we have for example a bargaining unit that we've signed to an average of a 3.3 increase over the next five years with initiatives that have been paid for with stimulus money that we are looking to make permanent Dr Batchelor mentioned the the two counselors that we're hiring and considering benefits and salary all in that's you know a little under 300 000 extra to the budget that is worth about maybe
0330.3 in your in your tax increase so uh you know while I'm confident that the administration if this passes will come up with a way to balance the it within the 4.1 I think that with everything we're trying to accomplish and the great initiatives that we want to have continue we may be better off above that so that is my reason for pulling this item thank you Mr Moore and before there if there is going to be any other discussion we'll need to move and second this would anybody like to move the item 9.6 some moved Dr Babson is there a second second thank you Miss Solomon is there any other discussion on 9.6 before we call the vote on it so we did have this discussion in committee um and I disagree with Mr
034Moore that we should come in saying we're going to be that High um I would like to see us much more consistent lower closer to where we've been the last few years um and I think that sort of sets the tone for what our community is willing to bear I don't think people want to see radical increases and I've been on this board when we've had cuts to how much we're going to increase the budget and I've been on boards where we've had big increases and it always leads to chaos and so I am so firmly convinced that we need to just be steady and consistent and right around where we were in the past and so um I am happy to support this because I think 4.1 percent increases above where we're going to
035need to be and I don't think we need to go to exceptions thank you Miss Solomon anybody else Miss Dunn uh yeah I actually got a chance to watch that part of the finance committee meeting and I appreciate the robust conversation I think Mr Moore made a lot of really good points about the expenses that we have coming down the line and I would liken it to you know you're going to have you want to do a massive home renovation or you're going to build a new house because we're about to build Ethan that's that's going to be very very expensive and the question is do you just throw up your hands and say eh we'll just borrow it all or do you say gosh what can we do for a down payment on our
036own what do we pull out of the money savings we've got you know how do we cut back on other parts of our budget or where can we you know how do we take on a gig jaw something else to help fund it and so I'm trying to give an analogy for people but I think um so I think that those were really good points that you made in terms of the the pending costs we've got not just of our contracts but of some significant Investments we need to make in the district to our infrastructure this building also needs some Hefty Renovations um at least so I'm I'm very moved by that but I also think in the four or five years I've been on the board I haven't seen us go that high in
037terms of an increase and I think especially given the reassessment in recent years that to go much higher than that would create a lot of stress for certain people in the community so I'm very mindful of that and I I trust Mr Pauling has really done his homework and and is not leading us astray if he says he doesn't think we're going to need those exceptions this year I believe him that we won't there have been years we've done exceptions and I think that if it becomes necessary I you know I I will see that and I tend to be more liberal in terms of saying I guess we need to increase things but I think that um four percent is is pretty high already and I'm hoping um that we have found ways to
038control costs around the district that will be able to still be able to put some money aside to help with that down payment towards Ethan that you actually said exactly what I thought you would say this is done you could agree with everything I said in the finance committee but still think that 3940 is enough and uh therefore allow this resolution to go forward thank you Mr Moore and Miss Dunn is there anybody else who has a comment to make this evening on that item if I may just a very brief comment um you know I usually when decision makers have a decision to make there's flexibility is a good thing to have but I think in this case I think for all the reasons that have been enumerated already and I think it does
039speak to the credibility that that Brian has earned while while with us so I again I don't think this is a cut and dry decision but I think this is the best way to go thanks okay any more discussion seeing none I'm going to call the vote all those in favor of approving item 9.6 I'll please indicate by raising your hand all right all those opposed all right Mr Moore opposed the other eight approved thank you very much uh Mr Moore item 11.7 uh thank you I pulled this item for uh reasons which I think are already well known to the board I I will just say that I really want to thank the administration and the calendar committee for all of their work I think for for a calendar that is presented at this
040time um that for for the fall of next year this is the best possible calendar we could have and would otherwise support it my preference would have been to have the current calendar for 2324 been considered up to a year earlier so that we could have like we're going to for the 24-25 calendar had an option that looks into a pre or a post Labor Day start so that is my reason for pulling this because that wasn't not an option because of the timing that we followed for this calendar thank you Mr Moore and to entertain any other discussion I'd call for a motion so moved thank you Mr second thank you Miss Solomon anybody else have any comments to make on the calendar oh go ahead oh I just wanted to say you know
041I I was fairly vocal with Administration about my opposition to this calendar a week and a half ago so the fact that I've done a complete 180 and now not only supported but made the motion I really just want to acknowledge the administration they took a lot of feedback from a lot of different constituents and groups and worked really hard and actually do think this is probably about the best calendar uh I could have asked for given all the things we're trying to do we this is a board that's done a lot of things in the last few years not the least of which is um you know we are being more inclusive of of the holidays that we're going to acknowledge and you know taking a really hard look at how we want to
042deliver instruction but I I really do think this is the right calendar I want to just tack on only because there's so many people in the audience and you're a captive audience right now one of the big things that we are considering as a board in Mr Moore just referenced it is in the 24-25 school year because because of when certain holidays fall and because of when Labor Day is this board this district is considering starting a school before Labor Day it is under consideration we think the community we hope the community is is paying attention to that and if they have strong feelings one way or the other that they will make those feelings known because feedback from the community in you know this is a board that listens and feedback from the community
043will inform some of our decisions so we want to let people know that that's one of the things on the table for 24.25 the big thing that changed in this calendar between the curriculum committee meeting and tonight's board meeting which is the reason I'm supporting it is that we did eliminate the proposal to have virtual instruction days on primary uh election day and general election day which is something I I will I I do not foresee myself ever supporting to have a planned virtual instruction day I think they are great Dr Batchelor when we're making a tough weather call and um trying to make the best of a tough weather call however planned virtual instruction days I I heard from our community were really hard on parents so I was glad to see that they
044were removed for this year where it ever happens in the future happens but I wanted to support this uh tonight so that's all I wanted to say and I just wanted to share that um the webs the it's all the information with the calendar is still up on the website we are back at it for the 24 25 calendar in February so the February curriculum committee we're going to be talking about the 24 25 and we want to get in this habit of trying to look two years out it gives us a little more time um and there are a lot of pieces that was just shared that we're talking about for the 24-25 calendar on our website where the information there is still an open email so there is open for feedback so any
045community members that want to give feedback they can write to us and share with us any feedback we have been listening and and reading all of that feedback and and taking that in I will say that the calendar committee that was made up of of parents students teachers administrators um you know board members all came together staff to look at our calendar there's a lot of things that came up at that committee that we had never even thought of and one of the challenges was election day um is that me no I'm sorry I thought sometimes I turn Siri on um uh and uh there is a you know election day and one of the ideas was have we thought about the fact that since it's a challenge for us to hold School while we
046host polling in so many of our buildings we'd love to host school and have polling the logistics it's the logistics of trying to do both at the same time and there's a suggestion at the committee maybe those two days could be virtual days um so that we wouldn't lose the days because the the the big emphasis from the counter committee was could we try to have a solid ending and that second week of June not go beyond that second week of June so that's where that idea came from and I thought it was a very creative solution and we'll be talking about that more in February thank you Dr Babson very quickly so just again we welcome Community feedback on this issue and we will be discussing this more at the February 14th curriculum committee
047meeting thanks spoken by our curriculum chair and uh anybody else I just wanted to add in that as Echo the remarks that have been made about welcoming Community feedback I'd also like to though put out a plug for a very extensive FAQ that goes along with the whole subject that's on the website about the calendar I would encourage our community to read the FAQ because the rationale the thought process behind why certain days were put into these draft calendars are there is I think very good to contextualize the calendar before you actually react to the calendar it's I you know I I our Administration worked really hard on that and I think most people who do go through the FAQ find it to be pretty Illuminating and inform them of why there are certain things
048on the calendar drafts that there are but as of tonight if this calendar instructional calendar passes it will go into effect so feel free to check out it's probably on the table there if you haven't seen it on the website or otherwise through the Radner reader and such if this calendar passes tonight it will be the 23 officially the 23-24 instructional calendar so with that since we have a motion in a second I'd like to call for the vote on the instructional calendar item 11.7 all those in favor please indicate by saying hi okay that's eight in favor all those opposed Mr Moore is opposed thank you very much that's an eight to one vote all right and that brings us to our reports from board Liaisons and Community announcements so we'll start with the
049Delaware County Community College and our liaison Miss Solomon um I just received notification that the Delaware County Community College has hired a new president her name is Dr Marta Cronin she is currently the president of Columbia Gorge Community College in Dallas Oregon she will be the second woman and the first Latina to lead the college um Dr Joy Gates black will be retiring June 30th after six years of service to the college so big things at the community college more to come thank you Miss Solomon and we we expect to have a visit by the Delaware County Community College in the not too distant future and I don't know what the new president's start date is but hopefully do you happen to know what that is I would assume it's after June 30th okay well
050then maybe we'll do a farewell to Dr Joy Joey black Gates black and then welcome the other president maybe in a future year thank you very much Miss Solomon for the Delaware County Intermediate Unit are Mr Moore thank you the dciu board met on January 4th and then we had committee meetings a week later on January 11th I'll just highlight one presentation that we received across those meetings as a presentation to the board the administration of the dciu gave an explanation of how early intervention Works in our communities and so for those of you who don't know what early intervention means these are students who are preschool age who are potentially identified to receive Services what was interesting about the presentation is we learned a lot about how the demand for these Services has been
051increasing there are more and more students who are being identified and the that the dciu is providing services to there are Services provided full-time at a dciu campus and in addition there are dciu staff that go into preschools private preschools in the area to provide services to these students so as with many things being responsible with the money that we as a district and all the other districts in Delaware County contribute to the dciu to provide services in the face of these increasing costs I think there's going to be further discussion about how to make early interventions something that is sustainable and still able to provide services to those young people who need it in our community great thank you very much I just want to add one more thing early intervention includes birth to
052three as well there's also a component so it's all the way up until school age from birth thank you thank you Miss Solomon and Mr Moore all right Delaware County school board's legislative Council Mr Jubilee yes I attended what would was my first meeting as our representative to the Delaware County School Board legislative Council although Miss Goldman is uh been a member for for some time we met on January 11th because of the timing of that meeting there wasn't too much substantive information although it was certainly worthwhile we talked about sort of again the transition I mentioned this in my government relations and Communications committee report transition to the governor's office some of the chaos in the state house which continues to this very minute and the changes amongst the legislative legislative uh legislate the
