supported this event the sad slash the sad and safe clubs organized say something week last week which is a week of celebrating the importance of trusted adults and upstanders in our community as pre previously mentioned students at west granton high school are in the process of wrapping up a t-shirt fundraiser for the refugees of ukraine it's been a great success our goal was to sell 250 shirts and we surpassed that goal selling over thirteen hundred we are planning a gathering at west on the morning of april 13th where we will wear all of our shirts thank those who supported our efforts and reveal the amount of our donation which is already over six thousand dollars thank you for your time and i look forward to seeing you next month thank you tyler thank you i

have to say uh the art show was unbelievable and the music was such a great time and it was such a cool experience so thank you mr nat and everybody who was involved for our psba report director fox sure so i just have two things this evening uh psba opposes house bill 2169 latest voucher plan moved by house education committee last week house education committee on a party-line vote pushed out house bill 2169 a voucher plan similar to legislation considered in previous sessions that would have established education savings accounts this latest iteration of vouchers creates lifeline scholarships a program that will siphon taxpayer resources away from public schools and send those resources to parents to use at private schools higher education institutions and entities that are not accountable to the public for their decisions or

results we need to keep the pressure up to stop this bill from receiving further action in the house of representatives to tell your legislators to reject the significantly disruptive and expensive mandated voucher program the second thing i have is spring advocacy day this is just a reminder i think we've talked about this a few times that's coming up on april 25th there are options to participate either in person or virtually you can go to psba.org events to read more details this is important because it helps us advocate for key education issues such as the impact of state funding on our district including basic and special education and providing critical services for students as we navigate through this pandemic and the need for meaningful charter school funding reforms that reflect the actual cost to educate students

and regular and special education programs i do know we have a member or so who will be there in person if others are able to join or virtually also please consider doing such thank you thank you director fox at this time we will move to public comment um each speaker will be allowed three minutes and union representatives will be allowed for we have mr tim schwartz to start yes please hi everybody i'm tim schwartz i'm the president of the john adams pta i want to tell you about the students well first tell you about the students at john adams um knowing about the struggles and the setbacks that happened during that pandemic uh the pta challenged the adam the students at john adams about 175 of them how to read 2022 books before the end

of the school year we challenged them in january at this point of the year ten weeks later they've read thirteen hundred um that's seven or eight books a kid about a book a week for each kid which is i find amazing other great kids they do a great job they're going to reach their goal and as the president of pta we want to find a way to congratulate them affirm the work that they did and celebrate what they what they wanted to do and so as we've been talking as the pta we wanted to we're thinking about the end of the year um the last two weeks in june where our kids are going to be in school when everybody else is not in school um we thought it'd be good to take them to

a park on a field trip the whole school say thank you for the work that you did in reading so much we have kids at school that have read 20 or 30 books already and so we started planning a field trip to mcdade park so the kids could have their field day in a field not in the plate in the parking lot next to the school because field days are meant to be in schools we had everything together the pta has worked for years to pay for busing and whatever logistics we need to in order to get the kids out of school so they can be kids and have a good education we found out in the last couple weeks that there's a policy in the school district that only fourth eighth and twelfth graders

can go on field trips and so we can't do the field trip the way we want to do the field trip i'm coming here to ask you to consider that reconsider that policy and let the whole school or let all grades go on field trips because i think field trips are something kids look forward to especially in this crazy crazy year that we've been through the tough year that you know started with so many coping concerns had a strike in it my son went to school for three days because of the straight in november three days in november because of the strike and then uh covert concerns as well um it's been a tough year for kids and for parents and to be able to give kids something to look forward to at the end

of the school year i think they deserve that so i want to ask you all to two things one to to find a way to acknowledge those kids at john adams elementary who are reading their tales off and number two can you please resi reconsider that field trip policy that is there i know there's a ton of questions and a ton of concerns that might be above my pay grade um but the kids need field trips and all kids need to go my kindergarten kid does the third grader in our school who has read 30 books that aren't those cardboard books that my kindergartner reads they're killing it john adams and i want to be sure that we can celebrate them and celebrate the work that they do and that they have field day in

a field not a parking lot thank you thank you mr schwartz and thank you for all of your work on the pta um superintendent maternity could we address that um the field trips after we finish public comment sure okay thank you next we have jonathan nasco good evening as some of you may know i'm a freshman at west grant high school i'm here to happily address the music and education decisions five years it took as a fight and now we were at a step and a start of a new era as i will put it because now the kids will slowly start to begin the music and arts programs and getting to learn and have the fun we had when we had it but i do not think a 30-day cycle if that's correct please

correct me if i'm wrong after this statement i'm asking you to please correct me on that is if it's the 30-day cycle i don't agree with that fourth and fifth grade yeah that would be amazing because then they learn the whole thing but at the same point of time you have to have years to feel your instrument and learn with that instrument specific ways tuning it and all the adjustments if something goes wrong and let's say your director is not there at the moment to help you then you could also learn how to help fix your instrument and i'm really happy to say the music arts is coming back into our schools well miss acura's statement i said last time was there was none which of course that's miss accurate there's basic music education at

the same point of time i did want to bring up to you guys and wondering if maybe west grant high school's marching band and scranton high's marching in knights could come together the 2023rd marching band season and host the cavalcade for all marching bands since our marching bands are coming down to a low right now with 21 as of right now in west grand high school's marching band and i am not pretty sure with the marching knights right now and right now the 2024 season we lose approximately 18 of our members so maybe even if we can't keep our well we're going to keep our marching bands no doubt but if we can't keep them at the high numbers why not do one thing to make it big and show everybody in our town and

our city that how much we love music arts thank you have an amazing weekend and week thank you for your input jonathan mrs rosemary bowland good evening directors first and foremost the federation would like to extend our thanks to all of our students for and school teachers and paraprofessionals and administrators in our buildings for all the hard work and achievement this week that we just heard that that's awesome i hope this continues and i'm particularly thrilled as you probably know at the achievement over at adams with the reading program and the fact that children are picking up books and reading them uh that's the best news we could hear tonight so i i want to applaud all of our elementary schools especially um i want to address an issue from our last school board meeting

one of our school directors asked one of the members of the scranton federation of teachers a question normally when a teacher is asked a question they're allowed to answer the question and that teacher was not allowed to answer the question that was asked and the reason was given by our solicitor to public comment was over so my feeling is if a teacher is asked a question the school board certainly has the ability to ask any speaker a question and that speaker should be allowed to respond to that person asking the question that has always been done in the past and i saw no reason why a question was asked and it couldn't be answered we have nothing to hide around here so i i think if you want to engage a teacher and ask a

question of that teacher it's only appropriate for the teacher to be allowed to ask the question and answer it vice versa flip it so in the future if the directors want to ask a question i'm sure you have that right under the law and i'm sure the teacher has the right to respond to your question otherwise don't ask it but if that question involves the scranton federation of teachers union uh and you want to ask that under public comment the scranton federation of teachers operates as a union certified as a union it's a local of the aft and aft pennsylvania and i'm just asking you to think about what you're saying before you do it sometimes you're not allowed to ask certain things of union people so it's uh just a cautionary note if you

really want to know what happens in unions uh just give me a call i'd be glad to sit down with any of you and discuss how unions work thank you for your kind attention thank you miss poland okay we have breeda holmes hello my name is brita cronin-holmes i'm an english teacher at west granton intermediate school parent of two students within the district and proud member of the sft i'm here tonight to ask for help with the increasing violence within scranton middle schools i have no better way to put it last week was absolute hell i have had colleagues tell me they have maybe witnessed seven fights in 15 years on friday at my middle school alone we had three and i want to make it clear that our principal vice principal teachers secretaries hall

monitors are working hard to do everything we can to stop that but i think one of the greatest disservices we can inflict on our kids is to shrug our shoulders and say it's happening everywhere when you're throwing yourself into the middle of a fight or racing down the hallway to the sound of screams not entirely sure what you are running toward all you know is that it is happening here it is happening now and it is happening to our students we can blame the pandemic but that too is another cop-out any teacher could have predicted this would happen well before the pandemic was even on the horizon hall duties were stripped of teachers on the middle school level years ago and our students and staff are suffering the repercussions of that incredibly foolish decision it

is another failure on the part of the ssd because of the constant refusal to listen to teacher concerns so i am asking you to listen to me now we are experiencing an uptick in violent and inappropriate behavior that no one has seen before these issues go way beyond the old school playground tussle every single time we were forced into synchronous instruction with the exception of the last whether it be due to snow or due to our ceilings literally falling down our 6th grade virtual classrooms were hijacked 11 and 12 year olds were exposed to pornographic materials racist homophobic and anti-semitic slurs that literally sickened my colleagues and me teachers began taking sick days rather than hold synchronous classes in an effort to protect their students from having their classes bombed with pornography at one point

i was an honest anonymously told over google classroom to kill myself that was the milder content and i am one of the teachers that they like this happened from september to february the last time we had synchronous instruction it did not happen not because our students were forced to change their passwords although that is what some members of admin would have you believe but because we teachers were absolutely relentless in finding out who the perpetrators were did anyone ask the teachers what they found out no did anyone from downtown ask no did anyone from i.t ask no is anything being done i have no idea because nobody will update us and the students who did it still sit among their peers with seemingly no repercus repercussions we need to move faster when a student holds

the hateful thoughts that were posted on google classroom those thoughts don't just go away because the passwords are changed the deranged thinking still exists and can lead to far more than a locker room fight these behaviors are not something that we can be can be swept under the rug one thing we do not have with situations like this is the luxury of time reinstate duties stop enabling bad behavior thank you thank you mrs holmes we also have the onan family that wanted to speak good evening my name is nathan ahn and i'm new to this district i would like more than three minutes i don't know if you can offer it but i have a lot that i would like to say my kids have just got enrolled in this district the beginning of march

actually i think it was the second week of march that they actually went to school since they've been in school my kids are have been subjected to bullying i'm a piggy back off of what she said my kids are subjected to bullying now my daughter was physically beat up on the bus beat up as the bus driver is driving down the road i don't know what was done but i have now involved the police because i'm not getting answers from the school when my kids were bullied the principal at john adams decided to punish my kids and move my kids to the front of the bus while the older kids who were calling my kids my three kids are sitting right back here i brought them for you guys to meet malachi and his twin

sister mackenzie and my younger one is mckinley my kids were called fat ass they didn't belong there and i told the principal at john adams that she suggested to move my kids to the front and she was going to send out a one call she did the following day my kids were called snitches i called the principal that day you know what her response to me was what do you want me to do that's not my job that's her job and she told me that she's a professional i don't see anywhere of her being professional my kids are still being bullied to this day turning to the 29th when my daughter was beat up the principal decided to once again like i said punish my kids and move them to the front of the bus

and there was another little girl that was sitting in the seat behind the bus driver they moved her and put my daughter sitting there and my two boys was sitting directly across as soon as the bus left the school this girl jumps over the seat to where she's between her brother and my daughter shoves my daughter into the middle aisle and starts wailing on my daughter as the bus driver is driving down the road putting my daughter in harm's way and then not only does he not stop the bus to get two girl to get two girls from fighting the only thing he says to the uh the girl stop fighting as he's still driving still putting my daughter in risk and then i go to the school i take my kids if any of

you guys would like to see the pictures of my daughters of my daughter red marked up face i will be happy to email them to any one of you so i go to the school i show the principal what happened i told her what happened and she's seen the marks you know what she's asked me if i would like to have my kids removed from the bus and me physically take them to school and pick them up and that the school district or the school would reimburse me mileage how is that possible mr owning can we make arrangements for you to speak to our our administrator who's that well we have mr schultz here um he would be the appropriate administrator could we make arrangements for you to speak with him regarding this and i

appreciate you bringing it to the board's attention well the only reason why i'm bringing it to your attention is because i'm not getting in anywhere on the school level but then i get this and now i feel that my kids and myself are being retaliated against because according to the principle there's been according to her my son has been being defiant on multiple occasions well if that was the case the first time he was defiant i should have been notified correct okay she waits until after i have it out with her and the bus driver to tell me about this and after i tell her that i have got the police involved because she still doesn't even want to ask to review the uh footage from the bus because apparently there's cameras on the bus

and and i i will i will ask mr schultz to work with you on that and and get with you what i'm saying is is that my son malachi was rolled up three times all on one day three times and the in the one time was for a fight that another kid put his hands on my son started shaking him all over my son defended himself because he's not getting it from the school and you write him up and you give him a detention but yet the little girl that beat up my daughter on y'all bus was still in school and the only thing that happened to her was she was taken off the bus that was it but yeah she's still in school thank you mr owner i'm going to ask mr schultz is

here and i'm going to ask him to to get with you and give you his information thank you is there anything that you'd like to address at this time superintendent mctiernan sure uh mr schwartz um thank you for coming tonight and congratulat all of that information you gave was great um that's partially inaccurate information that you're getting regarding field trips and us only allowing fourth grade eighth grade and twelfth grade to go uh basically what we're doing at this time is um we are allowing field trips and if there is no uh nurse that is needed then they're all being approved if there are nurses that are needed as you can imagine in june there are a lot of field trips so if we have more than one field trip to field trips where we

cannot accommodate a nurse then we are prioritizing 4th grade 8th grade or 12th grade so i'm not sure if whoever was submitting that field trip request form if it went over and if a nurse was available so i i just want to make sure that we're following the proper you know i i don't know who who submitted that field trip request form did they submit it at the school okay again it all depends on i'm i'm imagining so but i don't want to just say yes to something that i don't know the whole situation or if there are other events on that day so would the nurse be able to go from that from that school if the whole school is going it sounds reasonable but again i don't know what else is going on

so i don't want to generalize the have you spoken to the principal about this okay all right so what i'm going to do is i'm going to have our administration contact the principal to see exactly what it is or if we can accommodate or if there's a conflict then give you that answer okay all right you're welcome and sir um mr schultes will give you his number okay so we can try to come to a solution sir okay thank you well they tasked the administration with taking care of that so now this would move you obviously went to the first step i appreciate that you went to the school and and now you're looking for more support so our our central administration would get involved right now okay the understood well at this time mr

schultes will be contacting you to set up a meeting as we move forward to try to solve this our elementary schools do not have sros we only have them in the secondary schools that's a fact understood we and again sir let mr schultes will i appreciate you coming here and letting us know mr schultes will contact you i can't answer for the police department they don't fall under my you know mr schultes will be contacting you and i believe he already walked over to you today okay thank you understand thank you for bringing it to our attention okay we will now move on to the consent agenda may i have a motion to approve the consent agenda so moved second okay um on the question okay all in favor all right oh no i need
