Okay, that we'll move on to number 12. Approve surplus items for disposal of sale. >> Um, you got that in your board packet. There was nothing since that was sent to you on well, it was an updated list was sent on Friday. out the football. >> Make a motion to surplus items for disposal per second. >> Second. >> We have a motion in a second. Do we have any discussion? All in favor say I. >> I. >> All oppose. Same sign. Motion passes to approve surplus items for disposal or sale. Now, here's where I we added one. If you remember, this will be 12B and this guess I'll just call it early release for parent teacher conferences on February 19th calendar change. I'm requesting um so you remember in the fall we tried something a
little bit different and we went I'm just trying to find the date here uh we had a 2 to 8 so we put in six hours that is a contract day for teachers and so in the past we've done two evenings um we changed it from 2 to 8 and had our middle school high school in the gymnasium. I heard a lot of positive feedback about that. Um, I'm requesting that we try it one more time, that we release at 1:30 and have conferences from 2 to 8 and then I am going to have my teachers take data as to when when they see the most parents um to know that if that is, you know, if it if we aren't seeing any teachers for or parents from 2 to 4, then maybe that's not
the best timing. But we um we want to try it one more day. >> Would there be a way for the parents to sign up for block? >> No, because it's much better if we come and we can see who has lines and who doesn't have lines. I think >> only reason I'm asking is I did hear there were people that would come in and wait and wait and wait and wait who could get to like a certain teacher. So if there were blocks and I know a lot of people work till 4 and some go. So if they signed up for the earlier block instead of everybody waiting till 4:30 5:00 to go then people aren't sitting waiting for 45 minutes just to make sure something's okay. >> I'm trying to just think how
we can sure talk through that. Now I know the elementary they use a system they use an online system. Um give them 5 10 minutes. I mean, that's about what the block would be. When you say block, I don't know what you mean by block. >> I think if they were just more diligent about saying, "Hey, we don't have time to visit tonight." Well, if you want to visit, we need to make this for another time. >> It should be five 5 to 10 minutes. And if you need to talk longer than 5 to 10 minutes, you should plan another meeting in the classroom. >> Does that make sense? Sure. Just make sure the teachers don't know that to But because that is a calendar change, we need approval. I'd like to have a board
approval whenever you change a calendar. >> What date was that again? >> Oh, I'm sorry. So, it's February Thursday, February 19th. Um, >> what's the change from the original calendar? Don't mind me asking. >> Early release of 1:30 >> and the other one was just normal. >> Yeah. So, what I did you guys on all the calendars you guys approved, I had on there the week that we should have conferences because it holds on the fifth week, but I didn't actually have a specific day. I think we are going to um Mr. Martin and I have talked about um I think it might be easier for activities and all if he and I look at because we've got two calendars approved after this year and we'll be approving that third year here in March I
believe. I'll probably try to get it out to you next seme next semester next month and then give you a month to look at it. we'll approve it March. So, we can go in and pick a specific day or two days. So, then we can plan activities around that. Um, fall is very intense. We have a lot of activities. It's tough to plan around those four board meetings as you know and for all that. So, I'm hoping as we continue with these three months for three years, it helps with some of that. But that's why is because we didn't have a specific date chosen and we're we're asking for an early release. >> You're looking for a motion for that, Rich? >> I'll make a motion to an early release on February 19th for the
calendar change. >> Second. >> We have a motion and a second. Do we have any more discussion? All in favor say I. >> All same sign. Motion passes to approve the calendar change for February 19th. And with that, we'll move on to number 13, schoolboard training, January 22nd at 4 pm. >> Uh Dr. Pogani is coming. We're going to have it right here. We'll have supper at 4:00 and then um he is going to be training again. Um what his training is going to involve is some review of board governance. I told him we have new members. And then he's also he said he's got some really good things to discuss with us on leadership traits and board members, what leadership looks like in a board member. And um so I said that sounds great.
So he's coming that'll be 5 to 8 then. So >> okay. >> Yeah. Awesome. Any questions on that? Amy and I have a superintendent and business manager meeting in Rapid City earlier that day. So, we'll attend that and then be back for that training that move on. No action needed there. Move on to number 14, gymnastics co-op discussion. Guess I don't know how to delve into that necessarily, but we are at a point with basically the space we have here available. Some of the numbers we're seeing out that think that our space might be suited better um in the future to I guess at least look and see if anybody else wants to wants to host that. There's there's no other schools that want to host it. We need to have some kind of discussion
regarding what's going to happen going forward. >> I think you reached out Rachel. >> I think part of the discussion um started when we're looking at the renovation. are we I mean we don't we haven't made that decision if you're going to remodel or what but right now um the data shows us that there's probably close to a million dollars going toward stationary use for gymnastics. Meaning we would set up a gymnastics room just for gymnastics. And what we're needing is more gym space. And so that is not helping with the gym space. And our data shows us we have two students, part-time students right now. Last year we had three students from wall with the struggle we're having with gym space and the round I mean back and forth what we can do. I
reached out to all or to I reached out to Kdoka to those superintendents and said because of space we are needing to figure out what we can do with gymnastics. Neither of them said they felt they could do they had the space either. You know, our struggle is always going to be, you know, meeting the first off the needs and then then the wants of as many people as possible. And it it's just it's getting to a point where, you know, with the space issues we're having and need for more space and the budget and so on and so forth that, you know, I'm not going to say it's not feasible, but to allocate [clears throat] your resources and and you have to make some tough decisions sometimes. And you know, if we had a
large number of kids out, well, that's a whole another story. But >> from my understanding, look at the word don't >> it was about 17,000 last year >> and that's without and then that's about upgrades of equipment. That's just a standard >> hotel room. So just so that everyone knows here we pay for all the equipment. We pay for the leotards that they're uniform. Um the three schools do split according to percentage the travel um and some of those expenses. Chamberlain and hot springs are our nearest competition. So, our kids are having to travel to Vermillion and Yankton and quite a ways away um with competitions, a lot of overnight pieces. >> Do we know how many total kids in the co-op are in gymnastics? We have two from wall, right? >> Three from co-op.
>> We do have coaches in the room. You can you can invite them with questions. >> Chris, >> well, thank you. [laughter] >> Megan, would you like to speak to that? I don't >> We have two from wall from Phillip and one from Kenoka. >> Say four from Phillip. >> Yes. Yeah, I don't I don't doubt that it's a great program. It probably does good for a lot of different kids that are in it. And you know, I just no no decisions been made. If if anybody wants to provide some context or some input, we'd love to hear it. But it's getting it's getting tougher with the space station to to to help help the needs of our few kids. We have many that need more space, want more space, and we have a budget
that doesn't necessarily uh allow us to build everything for everybody. Just we really don't. And the way it's looking, you know, we want to make sure that we can help as many kids as possible. and we can't do everything for everybody. >> So when you spoke with Kadoka and Philip, it was pretty much like a no-go from them at all. Like not even an opportunity to share some of it. I know it's probably a pretty big undertaking to move it from here to there. >> I did push it hard. I mean I just >> one thing that comes to my mind is if this is the direction we decide to go which is not being decided or has been even decided is the remodeling of the old school and when that would be an undertaking
that would also be one less gym for that whole it'd be a year project. We'd have one less gym for gymnastics or for any other sports to even practice in. That being said we would have to have a co-op help if that was to even be an entertained idea. gloves would have to help out with that. Not saying that's what we decided. I want the public to know that's nothing even no votes have been done. But if that was to happen, we'd need help from them on that and they're not showing a lot of interest. >> Space space is an issue here as well as that's what both of them said. >> Do we pay coaches salaries that? Well, we pay it and then so all the expenses that go through the general fund which
includes the salaries um travel anything like that that is prorated based on a number of athletes. It's the same thing with a rest. So I I don't have a whole lot else to say tonight at this meeting. I guess um nothing's been decided, but guess is what we know going forward is that none of none of the other co-op members have answers are taking out. I did want I do want to um follow up with your question. Hold we do incur all the um expenses for capital expenses 100% are on our own. So like all the equipment um the uniforms and such like that we pay that 100%. That is not appropriate >> in the gym overhead. >> At what meeting do you think they do need an answer because they do they need to
have time? >> Um we really hoping to get a decision made to get this um off everybody's chest sometime this spring is what I was hoping for. >> Yeah. I I don't know that we've said it. I don't know that we've said it monthly. Um, I mean there's probably some more talking we need to do and you know some some discussion I think but I I think that we would have we would have this to the March vote by March or April the latest March and I will do some more research you know, with our South Dakota high school activities and and Mr. Martin, what that what it entails if we were to, you know, program, you know, there's uh options in Rapid City that's not very far. We drive it every day. Um to
uh you know, a a gymnastics option over there. >> Yeah. Yeah. and to see >> and they're bringing other less I'm going to say it bluntly less real um real estate taxing like it doesn't take as much real estate to run like a competitive dance team or something like that that could still be take the place if need be for those girls who don't like basketball but also not take the real estate gymnastics does to solve our gym issue because at the end of the day it comes down to gym space and us as a board get hampered on gym space non-stop. It's quite a dilemma for our board. Third of the time we talk about chip space. So that's why I'm pushing for a decision. >> They have had a lot of interest in
competitive and I'm talking competitive. So yeah, dance cheer >> and there's no reasoning being said that um girls wrestling is the reasoning for this discussion at all. So everybody know that was never a thought. >> If anybody else has anything to add tonight, everybody can be in the know. >> Just be thinking on it. Yeah. Be visiting, please. >> Yeah. Well, we'll move on to committee reports. Number 15, >> first bond, budget negotiations and insurance and got a committee meeting scheduled from 26th of January at 4:15 and know that report tonight on our end. Um, if nothing else, buildings, grounds, and transportation we have met and >> there's always something on that one. There's over something on that one. >> What if you want to speak a little bit there? >> Oh, I don't need
to talk. >> Well, we met with the um wall economic development director about different ways of funding projects for the school district when we're com when we're pairing up with the city being the powerhouse. hoping that if we were to remodel that and that was a decision we made, the city would help somehow fund it, finance it of some sort, help pitch in with it because we know the city is a big contributor towards using it. And so we had some ideas floated around on financing options. The city is not in a place where they can afford to write a check to help us out, but they can afford or they can somehow help with grants and different funding options. and they really want to push it towards more of a um convention center format
if they are part of it to the point where we have a couple conference rooms. They want to keep it a gym, a wrestling room or or a gym and a weight room, but the rest of it we'd maybe look at. This is all talk conference rooms which our our town and school could we could have our meeting in a conference room rather than a library at times. So, those are some ideas floating around I guess on that side of things. I don't want to talk a lot about it, guys. I don't want the city to get or the community to get in the idea that we are moving forward with remodeling. That could be uh it could get swayed really easy and words get twisted completely in this meeting if I talk too much
about it. But that's kind of what discussed financing options and for the city somehow kick in to help. We've done some cost. [clears throat] We've done some cost analysis on new builds, remodels. >> Mhm. >> And I guess the next step to that decision would be understanding finance a little bit and options. And so because that'll weigh in that that's what that was all about >> which as one of our meetings we're going to have as I should mention that I think as a finance committees we are going to meet with the guy who deals with school finances and the max in the what you are allowed to loan compared to what you can levy so there's limits to that even if we want to do a new big beautiful thing we have limited funding
and limited loan capacity we can take so but that and then the um the greenhouse don't have a lot to talk about that other and she's wanting us to she has grants to get green houses put in which is a whole another >> yes what we got to remember there I was talking to Ridge earlier what they would like and I think she shared with it at one of our meetings last month or previously um Ran with the economic development would they'd really like to have a greenhouse so that our community can have year round fresh produce they would love to partner with us. What I'm going to say and I'm going to say it in public, we have great facilities here in the high school, but we just got to remember we also have
a limit fill the things that we can do. Um, when I did share a little bit with the teacher, she will do and work with us all we want, but she what I think we got to remember is we talked about the the building, but we got to also remember then there's the hydroponics, there's the electricity, there's all those other pieces and such and go into this building that I don't know if what she discussed the other day was all of that too. I don't think it was just a shell from my understanding. And so there's a lot there's a lot of details that go into these ideas that really look good and sound good and but sometimes we can get Rich said it really well today when he said I want to do a
few things well and I think the community comes at us with some wonderful ideas but we got to remember that we have young teacher and it's not like I've got a 15 member crew out there that's experienced. So, we are teaching these kids as we go. It just takes time >> and the year round kind of throws my brain a little bit for a loop because of the school kind of brain or summertime whose responsibility is trying to be >> and we we aren't paying a FFA or an agriculture teacher right now in year round hours for those pieces. We got to remember that too. So, and I know there was going to be some city partnership and all that, but there's a Yeah, she shared some good things there. If we can work through
some of this, I think it is a good for our um plant science classes some good work. Yeah, it' be a community, the way I envision it, it would be a community greenhouse that the school kids while they're in session can go and help and learn and help with not necessarily our responsibility. >> I think that's kind of what she was hoping. Yeah. >> Which would be great, but who's babysitting it when community? >> Sure. That whoever they get, they don't >> hands off. >> I'm not against it. just questions that have to be asked because like you say you extra do the this and that you know at a time when budgets are a little tight or spend more money and >> I don't know we just we need to make sure that we're
covering the bases and doing a good job in what we do do and I think we do but >> it is not news to you and it's not should not be news to our community because it's on the news every night that I don't think our schools are going to get a lot of additional fun any additional funding so I think We just got to be wise with our choices right now. Decisions right now. >> Yeah, >> we're going with decisions. We're going to jump over to school roof replacement. That's a decision we'll be needing to come we've been working on as a building committee. Um we are kind of entertaining the idea of doing it in sections because the whole thing in general is about a half million dollar project roughly. It's replacing this
this portion of the roof and the gym roof, not the addition roof. And um we're looking at doing it maybe two or three to four phases just sections of it because you can do it because they glue it together anyways. It's all rolled out in sections anyway. So it's simple enough. They said Chris can contest if if he has any questions that they are able to do it in sections and it might be more financially feasible for the school district to do it in phases rather than all at once because the roof isn't horribly bad but it's end entering the last five to eight years of its life. I shouldn't even say hardly eight last five years of its life. So, if we want to start by doing a section, we better start here sooner.
Otherwise, it all need replaced here before too long. >> And Chris is here to entertain any questions you have, but he did share with me that we have they're coming out tomorrow look give quotes what should happen first. Is that correct? >> Yeah. He's supposed to be here sometime around 9ine tomorrow. And they had some other work they were going to going to be here anyways to do with some small like hail damage that they're patching. And then the main I don't know if he's the owner of the company or the manager or whatever, but he's coming down. And then he said we could go up there and look at it together kind of ask him what his opinion of the best way to do it in sections is or there's a certain portion we
have to start with or all those questions. then he can move forward and get a quote for us. >> And we did look at other roofing options and they're all about that 20 year to 30 year lifespan and they all cost about roughly the same ones. An adhesive I believe that it kind of sticks. It's a lot harder to replace. You kind of just keep layering it or we stick with the same type of roof we have now except they make them I want to say this was like what 40 mil and I think they make them in 70 to 80 mil now. So they're better quality. That's right. Yeah, the alternatives are maybe good but a little bit questionable little >> but no more life expectancy and no more budget friendly. So why >>
and no savings >> and no say yeah why ch >> that kind of sums us up doesn't it? I think so. >> That we'll move on to curriculum, instruction, and technology >> for meetings next week. >> We have a big meeting plan. They don't know that yet. We have a lot of just Yeah, we're this time of year we start thinking about next year and for things. Another thing they're going to be talking a little bit about is the growing requests for some online pieces and so forth. So, we got a good meeting. >> Okay. All right. Well, with that, we'll go on to legislative policy and strategic planning. First month in a long time we didn't have a meeting. >> Okay. >> That might be the first time. >> Yeah. >> And we are
all going to DC in March. >> Yep. >> Okay. Career development scholarship and marketing probably nothing yet. Okay. That you go on to the elementary principal. >> Well, the only thing I have right now is that end of semester and quarter. It's on Thursday. Four cards will be coming out next week. Let's see. Got questions. Thanks, Chuck. Uh, number 17, K12 assistant principal and tech coordinator. >> I have mainly tech reports. So, the powerhouse, we have all of the pieces ready for the new install for the security system. It could go Wednesday. I am asking them to hold off for just a little bit because I did not think about the community having access cards and so I want to make sure that we're not locked down for a long time without the community having
access to that. I'm talking to Golden West tomorrow and I can share that out when I know the final date, but we do have the state firewall and everything is set up to get it bridged so that that will all fall under managed services moving forward. I am bringing to the curriculum committee uh two computer management student management services that I'd like to look at for teachers to be able to use to monitor students on their computers when they do give intentional assignments. And so they will come at a cost. We used land school. We haven't paid for it in the last 5 years or so. And now it is we are to a point where we probably have to pay for a program as technology needs arise. And then we're not giving middle school
computers back yet. I had an issue come up where students were able to gain admin access and they had higher power to make decisions technology-wise than even Dr. Sally or myself without the need of a password. There is a quick five minute YouTube tutorial out there and a device that you can order on Amazon to do this. And so I'm not comfortable sending those devices home until Golden West can assure me there are policies in place to kick them right off of their computers. Again, it will go right past content filters. And that just puts us at a big risk. >> Just a little thing you can plug into. >> It looks like I'm It looks like this. It looks like a lone house. >> And then I can share it with my friends and
they can do the same thing and they can get admin. We found admin rights on a student's computer right before Yeah. RA West founded force >> and is there um not to speak about student what's the what's our disciplinary plan going forward for things like that that happen on any students >> we don't know how this happened so >> be potentially the device or >> so is there any excuse me [clears throat] is there any admin wear that they have like government computer you you're not allowed to plug any USB device into it. If you plug something USB and it locks your computer down and flags everything. So I don't obviously like the government stuff is probably a little more >> security. So I mean I know there's security stuff there. We can't even we
can't even buy outside keyboards and things and plug in a USB computers at work. >> I was just curious if there was a setting that like pretty much disables the USB ports. >> I don't want any of that there. >> Yeah. I was like, well, >> because they save so much. >> For one, there's students that have access issues. So, if you do need them to have a mouse, we would want that. >> Just it's things to consider. >> But it's it is a concern and it's one that's why they're not going back. We were we had set until Christmas and then that happened this way. >> Forward without them being on school premises. >> I think I think the blanket thing though is pretty ridiculous. To Tyrell's point, there's there's no personal accountability for
a middle school kid, what are we doing? And if that didn't happen by accident, >> two stories. So when Gold was first founded, they said it had to be intentional. And then the second time he said it could have happened in about three different ways. >> Yeah, >> we know it was there. >> I'm not going to say any more in open form because we're get too close to talking about students, but um >> it yeah, I I think probably for open session that's probably all we need to talk about today. However, your concerns. I wanted her to tell you guys though that cuz I know that that is a thing is is are these computers. But um I am telling you we've had some teachers go to a lot more paper and I tell
you what the kids are doing fabulous. Um we've had Mrs. Myers and I have ended up last week we pretty much taught the English class because because of sub gone and it was all paper pencil. Have the parents been notified that the computers will not be going back? That there's going to be more papers coming home? I do know there's a couple elementary teachers that said, "We're not going to send so many papers home. You guys are getting way too much." Even the students are saying that parents are just throwing away our papers. I'm concerned about that too at the high school if you're not going to give the computers back. Okay, just a heads up. This is what's going on. We're reevaluating at this time. We're not taking them away permanently. It's just the
course that we're on. >> We'll send something again. Thank you. Okay. If not confirmed, you got anything else? No, that was all tech. >> All right. Thank you. Um, we'll go on to business management report. Um, just like Sally's contract, um, my contract, um, says that I need to inform you guys that, um, you need to choose or we need to choose evaluations form for me to have you guys evaluate me. My evaluation is until April. Um, so I did send in your packet subions. So, um, these were all evaluation forms that other South Dakota school districts use that have their school boards evaluate their business managers. Um, they're kind of all over the place. The one that we've used in the past here is pretty it's pretty it's like a two pager. It's not
it's not very good. So, I would recommend that you use one of those and you guys can take some time since we weren't you're not going to be evaluating until you can kind of look through them and decide which one you'd like. Um, also I did send my a copy of my contract and just as Sally's her mine says February board meeting, you'll just have to let me know if you plan to winning my contract next year. So, um, that's it. I just have to let remind you kind of awkward converation but other than that um I'm continuing to work on the impact aid application. I just got one of the final documents that I was waiting on from um the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands um supervisor there. He just signed it and got it
back to me. So I hope to have that um submitted here this week hopefully. Um, there's a couple questions I had for Max, our impact aid gal. She's working on for me, but other than that, nothing crazy, but I'll get that in [laughter] before the deadline. And then, just another reminder, February 2nd is the first date um that board members can start circulating petitions for the next school board elections. So you can come, you can get those petitions on the Secretary of State website or I will have them available in my office, >> February 2nd. >> Our election is in June. >> Correct. >> Thanks, Amy. >> That's it. Appreciate it. All right. Number 19, 6 through 12 principal and superintendent report. >> Few things going on. Um, we are up for accreditation review next
year. So, um, they have trainings. I think Mrs. Myers and I are going to go to training in February. It's online training. Most of the day training, isn't it, you guys? And then Mr. Score is going to go to one in March. Um, both Mrs. Myers and I have been involved with this um at the state when we worked when we contracted with the state the accreditation review. But this is why um Mrs. Myers and I have been pretty picky about certain things we expect from teachers. And this is why is because to stay accredited, we got to make sure we're doing a few of these things. Um, and so we're kind of on them about it. And this is why because we want to end up with a good accreditation. Um, let me see.
There are a few things. We have two new students. Um, a senior and a fourth grader. We have two new students. this this um that came after Christmas. So we are excited about that. We've also already talked parent teacher conferences will be September 19th or September January February 19th and we'll dismiss at 1:30 and those will be 2 to 8:00. Um I kind of forget what parts I've shared with you. I'd like to keep you up. It has been scheduled. Freshman impact will be in wall. It was in wall for a long time. I just was told today that we are one of four 20-year members that have been involved with freshman impact. That's the program that um Rick McFersonson has been heading for years and um where we do a lot of training with
K with our freshmen on u you know drinking and driving. Um, we'll have a skit where and then we'll have a skit where there'll actually be an accident and your life flight will come, your ambulance will come, your fire departments, they kind of can use it as a training. They'll come, they'll take the kids, there will be a death um and and we'll have a funeral and all of the above. This is for freshmen if you want. It's an outstanding day that I believe is Feb or is April 29th. We're going to have it downtown um and um use the community center and such. That's on the 29th. A couple other things that we are organizing. I'm kind of excited about um Mr. Stroshine as CTE director has organized a job fair on the 16th
of April. We've invited area schools. I am also planning a visitation day for wall school. I am going to have a visitation day for eighth graders potential or other um community eighth grader or other students who are interested in what Wool has to offer at our school. I'm also going to invite legislators, our own as well as others to just come see what we do at Wool. um part of this job fair, we're going to have many businesses that we have partnered with. We have a lot of partners um that are coming. They're bringing equipment so the kids get a good feel of what some of these jobs entail. The following day on the 17th of April is going to be the RCTE auction and supper um where we'll auction projects and different pieces. So
those are some things that are that are further down but they are things that are coming up. Um I will be gone the 28th through the 30th for our Felissa meeting in Florida. I will be going to the executive um board. I know there is an opening and I don't know if I've got the power to do it. Um, it would be a, if I remember right, it is a vice president of the VISA board, which would also be, I think, also a position on the Navis board. Um, so I I've stayed in close contact with them. I'm up for it if uh they know that South Dakota is very well represented when we go to all this. So, um I stay in the I bug them. We are just finishing Thursday will be the
last day of our Hunter safety course that we are providing in sixth grade. So, on Thursday, um, with our final schedule the way it is, we're taking our sixth graders out after lunch. So, at 12:30, we're going to take them out to the uh, shooting range. I've got two parents. I'm going to go, the teacher will go, two parents will go, and the Mrs. Aber, the teacher, but also Mr. Pton who's teaching the class. And so we'll be taking those kids out. They do not need to shoot. But we said it's very very good. Yes, they've got to have permission slips, but it's very good for kids to be around that to learn the safety around around guns. And so, um, that's been really good. I think next year what we're going to do is
really work. We'll get it at the beginning of the year so those kids are ready to hunt in the fall. Um, our one act play, the community performance is at 6 o'clock down at the community center on Friday night. This Friday night, then um we are going to have it as a school function 2:30. It'll be an assembly at 2:30 for K12 on Monday the 19th. Um, I believe they perform at regionals on the 21st, right? >> Um, so that's our one act. That's our one act play. That's what I have on my list. I've got quite a few things here that will come to a committee and a couple things for executive session. Any questions? Finished in semester. So that's kind of um oh a big thing because I didn't have presentation earlier two
things we put in place this year that we are finally seeing great results our attendance you guys out of so what our little rule is so seventh period I took all study halls away and we've added that time into classrooms work time during classrooms with the expert in the classrooms our last half hour of the day is that seventh period eagle time. And we made this thing if your grades are sees or higher and you have no absence or attorneys the week before, you don't have to be there that last half hour. Um, also in order not to take a final exam this week, let let me back up. I'm requiring all teachers to have a semester long a semester review Monday and Tuesday. So today and tomorrow, those kids have to they have to
review everything they've done for the semester because I want everyone to go through that. The kids then that have to take a final on Thursday on w Wednesday Wednesday and Thursday are the kids who have um three or fewer absences and at least a C or better or if they have five absences an A. So really I'm working on that attendance. Out of a hundred kids or approximately 100 kids in our high school, 30 have to take a semester. It was so easy to work through attendance. Most of them were three or fewer. Now I do take consideration if I have a kid who's had a sickness and it's three consecutive days, I count it as one absence. Vacations though, they have to count every day. So, um I am really impressed with our kids.
We have kids so excited about and it's an incentive to be here each day. Now, one thing I do see is we do have a lot of kids out for activities. No, that doesn't count against their attendance. However, they are gone and I've expected teachers to continue learning. So, >> can we point out, not to interrupt you, but it's important for the board members that weren't part of that discussion. I think it was two years ago, we were actually getting a pretty poor [clears throat] grade on attendance out of >> state. Before my time, when I came in, I was told how terrible the attendance, you know, have I gone and researched and researched? No. But from my understanding, it was we were struggling. And so, yes, that was a goal that I had was
to improve that attendance. And um I um thank my staff who brought these ideas up and um thoughts, Brand, your student, the way we do the attendance in the finals. >> Well, I think it's pretty good. Um yeah, it it encourages everyone to come to school at least so they don't have to take the finals at the end of the semester which it's a pretty good incentive to have in place and I I believe that it's good to keep >> I don't have any questions for you unless everybody else does. Thank you for Thank you for your work. Um, next item is number 20 and it's going to be executive session. Do we need to take a water break, bathroom break before the end of that? Maybe I might. Yeah. Okay. We'll come back and
start again. I did too.
