001education together to the board, I'm sorry. Uh at this time, would everybody please stand for the invocation and then please remain standing for the pledge of allegiance. Let us bow. Dear most holy heavenly father, come to you this evening, Lord, especially this time of year. Thank you, Father, for blessing him to be able to do these wondrous things so that we might be able to gain our salvation. Father, we'd like to ask at this time that you please be with the family of Brooklyn Shoulders. Uh she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. We ask that you be
002with her as she begins her journey through treatments. uh and uh I know how tough they can be from having gone through that with my wife. So be with her, father. She's going to need help. She's going to need support. Bless her family to be there for her and and her friends. Father, we'd also like to thank you for blessing us to have a safe first semester of this school year. We just couldn't do these things, Father, without your blessings. Bless us to please have one in the second half. Father, please bless us to do the business that we've come here to do tonight. Bless us to always do what's in the best interest of the students, teachers, and staff, Trto County Schools. For it's in Christ's name we pray, dear Lord. Amen. >> Amen.
003I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under [clears throat] God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you. Please be seated. [clears throat] >> If we do, [snorts] Robbie's out. I'm sure most everybody saw the his text. He's still not feeling well. We hope and wish him a speedy recovery, especially before Christmas. Maybe he can be well enough to enjoy Christmas with his loved ones. Um, at this time, uh, anyone that's not on the agenda, is there anyone in the public here tonight that would like to address the board? I put you on. >> Okay. Thank you, sir. Okay. Uh, is there anybody here that's not already on the agenda that would like to address any item coming
004up on the agenda? Okay. Board members, we do have a agenda before us. Uh, please look it over, see if there's anything needs to be changed. And if there's not, I would accept a motion for the approval of tonight's agenda. >> Motion. Have a motion by Miss Petty to approve the agenda for tonight. Do I have a second? >> Second by Mr. Wood. Any discussion? All in favor, please say I. >> I. [clears throat] >> Any oppose, please say no. Next is our consent agenda. We did go over all of these items at our work session Tuesday night, but if there's any board member that would like to pull an item or [clears throat] more discussion, please let me know which item and we'll move that to new business. [snorts] If there's no items that
005need to be pulled, do I have a motion to approve the consent agenda? >> Make a motion to approve the consent agenda. >> Motion by Deanna to approve the consent agenda. Do I have a second? Second. Second by Mr. Woodard. Any discussion? All in favor, please say I. I. Any opposed, please say no. We have approved all of the items on our consent agenda. School district highlights. I know coach has some, but I'm not sure Jennifer does. Okay, turning it over to coach. >> I am one more time. >> Nice of you to turn it over to the second one. [laughter] I will not try to keep you long, but we have a lot of good news and a lot of celebrations this evening. One of the things is is I want to share with
006you uh our academic data from the most recent 2425 school year. The reason that it's taken so long is the state report card was just came out this today. And what I've tried to do is hold that information back where you can see a 360 of what's going on. I've prepared prepared a data notebook for you. And there's a couple things that I would really like to highlight. If you'll look at page two, that is a highlight of the state report card. You can go to the website and look at it. However, we've dissected it for you so you can see how we've done. And I like to pay close attention that you'll see that our both our high school and our middle school have been designated as a A for two years in the
007running. Uh you will see that our elementary school had a C, but you will also if you look at their overall success rate last year was 49.6. This year it's moved to 50.9. And you can see that their English language arts is 12 points above the state. Their mathematics is 11 points above the state. They're doing a great job with achievement, but as we know, it's hard to get growth when you're doing high achievement. And that's something that Miss Catherine and her team will be working on, you know, going forward. You'll also notice that the middle school, if you look at their academic growth, that they've been a level five in every category for the past two years running. So, I think those are some highlights of that. Of course, you move to page three.
008you know about the schoolwide rubric. You're well drilled on that. We move forward on that. You move to page four. There's a couple things I'd like for you to look at here. If that is in blue, that means it's in the top 10% of schools in Tennessee. There's 147 school districts and you've been in the top 10%. And you can see that it's highlighted there with third grade ELA with it at at 57.3% and the state average is 41.7%. You can also go in there and see our eighth grade ELA. Our seventh grade math which ranks eighth in the state. Our state department right there. No, I'm just kidding. >> Uh tell them we'll send you down there. Teach them how to do it. And [clears throat] then uh eighth grade math is third. Third
009in the state, 147 school districts. And eighth grade math, third, seventh grade math I said is eighth. And if you look down at eighth grade science, that is eighth in the state. But you'll see that most of those reporting categories, Travis County Schools is in the top 10% or the top 25%, which is outstanding. If you'll move over to page five right quick, you can also see how we break down. This is what we always talk about is we want to be better than our neighbors, the ones that surround us. And we're talking about Mon County, Smith County, Wilson County, Sar County, and some of those school districts have a whole lot more resources than we have. So that is uh our district comparison in grades three through eight in reading. And again, you'll see
010that Trousa County Schools was number one in that region in third grade reading, and that's a big metric for us. So, that's a celebration. And we were also first in eighth grade reading. If you'll turn over to page six, you'll see where we rank with our neighbors in math, and you'll see that our eighth grade math was first in the region as well. Moving over, I'd like for you to focus your attention to page seven now. And we're moving to the state rank by district end of course assessments. And if you'll look at something, every one of those categories are in blue or they're in green. Every one of those categories are in either the top 25% or the top 10% of the state. You can see our algebra 1 was eighth in the state.
011Our algebra 2 was ninth in the state. Our US history was ninth in the state and our biology was 11th in the state. Guys, that's kind of like the little girl in the spelling be when they asked Susie to spell cat and she said C A T C and the teacher said, "Susie, that's pretty good." She said, "Pretty good." Hail, that's perfect. You know, so we're getting pretty close to perfection right there. And that's a great celebration. If you'll turn over to page eight, you'll also look at how we compared in end of course with our neighbors. We were first in algebra 1, first in algebra 2, first in biology, and first in US history. Now, if that don't bring tears to your eyes, I don't know what does. That is outstanding. And let me
012say this, this is also important for us and it should always be a conversation is we might we might bring students in in kindergarten, first, second, third grade and they may be behind. If you remember just a year ago, the new teacher project identified the elementary school as one of the top 10 schools in the country that took students where they come to us low and they come out high. So what happens is they may come to us low, but by the time they get to high school, we've got 60 and 70% of our our students reading and working on grade level. And it's all it's not where you start in this game, it's where you finish. And it's where those students are when they graduate that matter. And I want you to know that
013our teachers and principles and leaders are getting those things done. But that is I think is outstanding. If you'll move over to page nine and I'll stop there. This is how the AF category is calculating. So on page nine you can see that there's an overall achievement achievement that's how many students are proficient that weighs at 50%. Your growth weighs at 40% and your growth of your lowest performing students weighs at 10%. And that overall score was a a three. And you see where it hits on that continue. Okay. You y you y'all see what I'm talking about a little bit. Need more question. Miss C answer all those for you starting next week. Okay. All right. If you move to page I want you to move to page 10 for just a minute. I
014want you to move to page 10 for just a minute. This is a middle school calculation. The overall achievement counts 50% growth counts 10% I mean 40% growth of the lowest 25 counts 10 look at where they scored five five calculated it's a perfect 5.0 score. Let me say that again. A perfect 5.0 score. You can't get better than that. And we've got two of those middle school teachers here tonight and uh they they they have a lot to do with that. So, and they can talk to you a little bit. And then I want you to turn over and I don't want to slack the high school any >> know you're giving a speech to [laughter] >> uh I don't want to slack the high school any but the high school uh overall achievement
015counts 50 growth score counts 30. And see when you go back to the elementary school you say well their their growth was low and their achievement is high and their achievement was a five. And matter of fact they'll be recognized on our website tomorrow. will post all this is having a five in achievement at that school and achievement weighs more than growth. But if you look at this overall achievement at the high school counts 50% growth counts 30 college and career readiness that's your ACT your ASVAB your dual enrollment all those things that those indicators of college readiness weighs 10% and the growth of lowest counts 10%. The only non-perfect score that they had was they had a four for the lowest 25 instead of a five and they lost I guess to the middle
016school with a 4.9 >> and I couldn't what I'm saying what you say you work on getting >> second time Mr. Billy's got me this week. First was his daughter going the fire alarm on Friday night [laughter] about >> a little jab. >> And then the last thing in the back and y'all can read that. Those are the Let me say this. If you turn to page 12 and I'll shut up. If you'll turn to page 12, look at that. That is a different metric. That is your reward schools, your priority schools, your needs of improvement schools. They are calculated a little bit different than the AF because it has that thing that we've talked about is chronic absenteeism. How chronic absenteeism factors into it. In the AF, chronic absenteeism is not an indicator. In
017the federal side, which is the reward side, it calculates. So, you get to see how that does at those scoops. But that's a good quick report. We've prepared that for you to take home. you've got any questions, Miss Catherine is be available come Monday and I I'll be around the December the 31st and be glad to answer any questions that you have. But I think that's a good uh 360 of what's happening with those schools. Remember that our report card, school report cards opened up this afternoon. Parents can go to the state website and uh look up all three of those schools and it'll give you a much more detailed report than what I've provided. But this is a good first look. questions. >> I don't think you meant to omit this and I need
018to wear my glasses to read this to make sure, but you fourth grade um ELA was also in the top 10%. Is that correct? Yes. Sorry. I just wanted Yeah. >> I just wanted that to be said aloud to people who didn't see this. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think you did everybody else, but >> but you get up here and you get a little nervous and not talking fast. >> Yeah. Well, and I had to to make sure I was reading the right thing. And also let me show you too that these are uh certificates and we'll post these on our website uh tomorrow. But this is uh this is a award for the high school for having a a rating. And this is a post for the for the middle school having a A
019rating. And this is a post for the elementary school having a level five rating for achievement which is the highest designation that the school can obtain. And then we have a press release that will be posted tomorrow as well. >> I think we all know that if the elementary school didn't do a really good job of catching their people up and moving them forward and stuff, the uh middle school wouldn't have as good a student coming to them each year >> and to be able to enjoy that five rating and stuff if it weren't for the hard work of the teachers at health school. >> Questions for Dr. Sley? There are subschool districts >> that would do anything to have these kind of result. If >> they got any money, we might talk to him.
020So >> could stealing my job. [laughter] >> Is that your only highlight? >> That's it. >> Okay. Thanks, sir. Next on our agenda, principal report. Mr. since you the best. Always like to start with the best. >> I don't know about Beth. We just rolling along with a good group. >> I'm just going by the scoreboard, Mr. Go. >> The scoreboard did hit pretty well. It did hit pretty well. But here's what I heard. Travis County students had a good year last year. >> That's right. >> That's what I heard across the board. We got a strong group of teachers and a a strong love for our kids along the way. So, that's always been fun to see. You know, some highlights. I don't know if there's anything you really particularly want to hear. We've
021wrapped up semester one, finished up with benchmarks today. It feels sometimes that last week feels like a uh a little bit fun in terms of you know we gave 334 kids I think enrollment is today. There might be a couple that are we're off. I think it's pretty close 334 and u we gave each one of those five benchmarks in the last five days and that gets a little bit fun. We've had really good attendance. We've started to Wayne off with some sickness in the last couple days. I think we're getting out of a really good time in terms of where sickness is heading. Uh we've had students show up trying working hard. U encouraged them to work hard and they worked hard for us. Um I think right now we only have about 20
022students that haven't finished all of their benchmarks. So that's I think a really strong piece for us. And you know that's the data we'll use walking into Q2. our teachers will have that data to see right there as we start back in what is semester one what do we do well in what do we need to go back and work on uh and continue to improve in so that's a good good pieces for this time we talk about data we always need to look at that strong data and continue that that push on I've got a great group of folks we work with at that building and they work hard every day for our kids uh they are middle schoolers and they're they're fun uh some days more than others I can assure you we
023had a lot of teachers is ready to see a break and [laughter] I think kids were ready for it as well this week. So, they felt the pressure. They had a little fun this week as well. We tried to We had some competitions in the hallway. I don't know if you got to walk our hallways, but we had some uh some decorations in the hallway, some competitive pieces of of some stuff in there. A bunch of teachers on some elves and things of that nature that uh really tried to bring in a little fun along the way. We did those pieces. Uh we've had some home room uh fun with some uh prizes each day for our home room teachers. Uh songs or um uh riddles to solve that have uh gotten our whole groups
024involved with. It's been fun to hear the whole way when the teachers are when the kids are saying, "No, it's this. It's this." It's been really good to hear that with those pieces. So I don't want it to just sound like it's been testing. We've tried to make sure the kids enjoy those pieces and all our kids know that all we're ever asking for is to give their best. Um, if they'll walk into our building and give their best, our teachers will give their best. Have a really good run for I tell them this, they hear me say this from time to time on announcements. We just want to be make we want to make sure you can open any door you want to open that you don't close any of your face right here
025or we're not a part of that. So, we'll continue doing that for our kids. Um, we wrapped up student surveys um this last week. um finished all our teacher surveys, do those that tripod survey piece, which I think is a a really good opportunity just to reflect. Anytime you can get good data back from your kids, it's a good reflection opportunity. Uh how do they feel? What is it? What does it feel like? Sometimes we don't we know what we're saying or trying to refer and put out for uh students, but we don't know how they're interpreting. And sometimes it's it's good to reflect on what we're saying and how are they interpreting those pieces. gives us a good opportunity to see those thoughts. Um, otherwise, we've had a really uh a really good semester.
026We're caught up on safety drills. I think my teachers really love that uh fire drill yesterday about uh 2:00. Got them outside. It was a nice day yesterday, so we got a fire drill outside. And and while I'm saying that, I do want to give our our local law enforcement a shout out. They've asked us when we uh have a fire drill to give them a call since we're you know kids are going outside the building safety pieces and you know I looked out yesterday before that fire drill and there's law enforcement around at every corner. Um our kids are standing outside. It is a a bit of a safety concern and I'm glad they're there to make sure those pieces. So it was it's >> and it's really good since you're the only >>
027inner city right there in the middle of town school. Yeah. >> You got a lot of roads close by and things of that nature. So it's it's really nice to have there. They're uh easy to get a hold of and easy to get that taken care of. They're they'll have officers somebody sitting by. I know some some of our deputies and things have been uh you know maybe are off on that day, but they'll come in and make sure those are working for us. So it's been really nice to have. We've had no issues with uh we've done our drug dog searches quite a few times as I tell kids we talk about drug dog searches with dog searches is what I should be saying in that case we're looking for safety concerns and my
028kids know and they've heard us say that I'll go in the classroom after we pull or talk and discuss the big goal um we're not looking for something we're looking to keep our kids safe and I want them to always hear know it that way we we I don't want anybody in trouble I want our kids safe that's the goal so those have been really good Uh basketball teams playing tonight, Ribble and Springs. Uh they're underway. It's a little after six. So the girls are playing right now. We've had a really good season going for both. Um teams have been very successful. Got a great group of coaches that are coaching them up. We've got some uh we've got uh coach Cook, I don't know if you met Stephen Cook, works hard for our kids.
029Came in about three years ago. Really really like to do >> the shies do. >> He does what the shies do. He does a good breakfast bar. I know. [laughter] >> Well, I tell you what, he he works hard for our kids as well. So, >> he works hard for our kids. He's a really got he's got a you know, a volunteer helping him as well. Coach Mar's been with us quite a few years. Uh he's he's had a kid kind of going through as well. So, it's it's been nice to have him there. People you can trust around our students that are working our kids hard. Um, we've had uh Miss Denim, you know, probably knew her as Miss Petty walk into our our basketball program this year. And let me tell you what,
030she is, as I tell her often, and I hope she re watches this sometime, don't overdo yourself. Uh, it it's not just a sprint today. Uh, and she is spreading herself thin, but I appreciate what she's doing for our youth. Um, we got some young ladies that have walked in as volunteer coaches, helping her a little bit. uh Gracie Clark and Emma uh and Emma Elmore kids that have gone through with us working hard for us. So, it's good to see uh that push back. Um at one point, I know Mr. McCall's probably had this for sure, but we've got good coaches in all our positions and it's easy nice to know that our kids are ready to go. Sometimes I've learned it's a little difficult to find coaches that are ready to put that
031time in. There's a lot of time they spend with their kids. So, um, I appreciate I say that to say I appreciate the board supporting our coaches this past summer, asking and moving forward with with some increases. I think it's well reserved. >> Anyone [snorts] have any questions for Landon? >> Thanks, sir. >> You want me to call the next one? >> Go ahead. >> You're number one. You get to pick the next one. >> Let's Let's let Mr. Drew >> Okay. be surprised. [laughter] >> I actually didn't want to give you a chance there. [laughter] >> You always want to go with the best. That's next. >> Well, the best is over here sulking. [laughter] >> The best is a little sour. Um, it's it's really great to hear all of the accolades and
032our district is doing well, but we still have work to do and it's to see our teachers and our students working so hard and to see our achievement up there so high and we're just missing the the boat on the road, but we'll get it. So, um, it just means there's a little more work for us to do. Our benchmarks went well. Um, we still have some that we've had some sickness. So, between the stomach virus and I don't know, going into those rooms and touching all of those little computers and I had my little fanny pack on and I [snorts] had my hand sanitizer and I just knew I was not going to get sick and I'm washing my hands and they got me. They got me. That's okay. So um but attendance [laughter]
033[laughter] attendance has been good considering that we're in an elementary school in the middle of winter with the stomach virus. I didn't get the stomach virus. It's just I don't So um looking forward to this break [laughter] so that maybe the the germs will die down. Um, we are also looking forward to January the the PE so that we can reflect on some changes and just have some time [snorts] to get all of the teachers together in the same room and have some conversations and see check on some things that we've already implemented to see how it's impacting [clears throat] our student achievement. Um, today we had a fantastic day. We had our character counts giveaway. So, all of our students who have received a shout out at any point in time this year, all
034of their names went into a bucket. And one of our prize winners was Dawson Crim and he won a ride and it was it went to a great kiddo. He's had some difficulties this year. He had a brain tumor brain tumor removed and came back to school and his house burning. So, and he is still he's still he was there today smiling just with a good attitude. So, it's nice to see that might go to someone who um really exemplifies character. Uh we had a middle school pep rally with the middle school cheerleaders. They come over each year and they did a phenomenal job. The kids loved those cheerleaders and some of them have siblings and seeing their sibling cheer. The cheerleaders were they had smiles on their faces. They were happy to be there
035and our kids really appreciated it. So, thank you for u doing that each year. The kids absolutely love it and hope you'll come back again next year. Mhm. >> And we did have a door decoration competition and we had tons of winners. Each grade level there was a winner. We have dressed up all month. I know everyone says we don't do anything at the elementary. I promise we do. We have had Christmas trees. We have had elves. We have had you name it. Every day there was something. And today was wear your your jacket gear and put put on blinking lights and tinsel. You name it. It was it's been a whole lot of fun. So, um we're excited to see our kids get to have a little bit of a celebration after all of
036their hard work this first semester. >> We also just approved another field trip since you know >> we don't ever do any field trips. We need to prove another one tonight. >> That's exciting. Second grade. They um they do a lot there. They went to the Hermitage [clears throat] and they're having the discovery and they got a grant for that. So that paid the grant paid for the second field trip. So that's a field trip that will occur at no cost to our students. So, I am very grateful for those. Second grade teachers searching out those things. And um first grade is working on a field trip to go to the theater and come back at the park. And so we're we're just excited to see our teachers trying to give our kids some experiences
037outside. So, thank you for that. >> It's just a shame that people that look for stuff to complain about don't investigate and find out how much stuff really is being done. >> Oh, that's okay. >> It's just some people just read about. So, [laughter] >> anybody have any questions for Demetrius? >> All right, I guess we're stuck with you. [laughter] I'm trying to live over here. Um, obviously we've been back 14 days so it's been a very fast 14 days. Um, little few different things here at the high school Tennessee promise meeting which is mandatory for all seniors. Had that come up. We have we are national ACT test site. So last Saturday everybody was having fun parade. I was given ACT. We had 19 kids and we had more sophomore state kids than we
038ever had. >> Do we have many from other counties coming? >> It's just just >> Oh, it's just this school. Okay. >> Y >> So we had 19 which was pretty high numbers. Usually it's from probably 15 to 25, but the nuance Dr. Stricker informed me because this is my second rook year. A lot more sophomores took it and they felt great about it. So I think that's to me that feels good. Even though some stuff they haven't covered, they were excited about it. Just want to get a first taste of what that looks like. Uh I call it housekeeping stuff. I know they all related to this but tripod survey 15% for 26 27 closing out our summites which we deal with lagging data. So we don't get to do that. So a lot
039of little meetings in the office with our teachers talking about how their year went last year and what we're doing to work on this year. When I was taking my notes to come in here I thought think about the year ending but it's not ending. We got a lot going on. Tomorrow we got a busy day at the high school. We got a Christmas breakfast in the morning. We got an intruder drill with our law enforcement tent. That's always exciting. We got Christmas for kids at 12. And then we've got a middle school basketball conference tournament from 9 to 6. So the high school's like Vegas. It never sleeps. We're going to keep all [laughter] the time. Uh our basketball's in full swing. Both teams are in uh Christmas tournaments. We're going to girls going
040to Portland, boys are going to near White Lett and then we kick off after when 26 starts we kick off January 2nd with Watertown at home. U big thing this year which is new coach [clears throat] can tell me the dates here but with Bryce starting our new trainer he keep ran the door running December 1 working since Sam's left has done a great job u he's worked to find us a new team position uh with Mr. Dr. Pani retiring who's been working with us for how long coach >> since Methusela >> it's been a while >> it is their team doctors going to be Dr. Sean Mountain Bryce was a trainer at Cumberland and this is who he work with with the Houston clinic in 11 [cough and clears throat] so Dr. uh Dr.
041Mountain uh and coach Dr. Johnson's brother, Nathan, who works at Friendship, also works at the Houston Clinic. They came down to our facilities, talked to Bryce, met some of our coaches, met Coach Gregory, and we're excited about that partnership with them. Uh, big thing with Dr. Pani, we were always going to Nashville. They have clinics in Lebanon and Hendersonville. So, it's going to be a little bit more convenient for our parents. So, we're really excited about that. Uh, Dr. Fountain is a former trainer before he got into being a doctor and been working in orthopedics. So, he's got a unique view to it. So, we're just excited about that partnership uh with him. In terms of our our our achievement growth, our schools, just proud of our teachers and students. They ultimately do the work
042every day and uh represent our schools um K through 12. So, just very proud of them. Any questions? Anybody have any questions for last? >> We saved the best for last. >> Yeah, >> so we're halfway through the year. Thank goodness. [laughter] Benchmark have concluded and seniors don't have to take benchmarks, thankfully. But I can tell you when when that bell rang at 2:45, I think I saw the light come back in underassman's eyes. So, it's really good. Um, we got our results from the Christmas door contest. Miss Duke got first place, Miss Holder's class got second place, and then Miss McCll's class got third place. All the doors were really, really cool. Especially, I mean, I feel like we don't have that long to get them done. So, whenever we start working on them,
043like I I'm always like, you're not going to finish your door. and then they come on really well. So, I don't know how that happens. >> And [laughter] you know, every year they add something. There's a lot more lights involved. Now there's music. >> Oh, yeah. >> I'm worried about like pyro technics with the next used to be slaps paper from the library. >> There's inflatables this year. >> So, it's just it's become its own. >> I know, right? Yeah. They used to accuse me of cheap so we could make and uh Mr. Knight they had theirs are mechanized. I know they said they were talking about yours, but there's moving parts. >> One year I had the Grinch hand would come down over the the [laughter] >> And then while Mr. McCall was at
044the at the high school doing ACT testing, we had the Christmas parade. FFA had a float, FBLA had a float, and then the cheerleaders were in it. Our softball team had their coffee house talent show just last Saturday and they had 15 student participants. The talent was crazy. I mean like kids were singing, dancing, doing everything up there playing guitar. Yeah, it was really cool. >> Student council has done the 12 days of Christmas for teachers and then FBLA had their pageant. The high school winner was Tiara Aras and the middle school winner was Camry Mungle. Then FFA has worked in their course evaluation team. They placed 51st in the state and third in the district. Their A sales team placed second in the district. And then two state officers from FFA visited last Friday
045and they even attended our pep rally which was crazy. And then they're preparing for their state convention. And that's it. We're just ready for Christmas break. >> Anybody got any questions? >> All right, let's hear about lunch now. >> Well, lunch has been good. I know y'all keep asking me to bring somebody in, but it might surprise you, but a lot of the high school students think this is a little bit of a boring meeting. They don't know if they want to >> What? I know it's kind of a shock. I mean, sometimes it get a little spicy in here. [laughter] >> But lunch has been good. You know, I told you guys we missed out on Chinese day and still haven't seen it, >> but they've been doing breakfast for lunch. >> That's good.
046I don't know if y'all have it at the elementary school. >> Oh, yes. That and the fresh fruit. Like, they just love the fresh fruit. >> Yeah. So, I think that the lunch ladies are really upgrading. >> That's the best report you can get. [laughter] >> They're serving things that everybody likes. >> Yeah, he's a little highlight. Zoe and bet when we go over our meeting, we're talking about the highlight of day is when an algebra 2 class came and serenated me with >> Oh, yeah. Yeah. So, you know, after the benchmarks all ended, algebra 2, Miss Tomlinson's class, they really brought the hype for Christmas. They went >> around the office, you know, really loud. >> Brings you back to that talent. [laughter] >> Thank you. Hope you have a very merry Christmas. >>
047Thank you. director's report. >> Okay. >> One more time. >> Uh first of all, uh employment notifications. We only have one saber lamb a cook at elementary school has resigned and uh Miss Catherine and them are going to do interviews as soon as we get back to replace them. So that's the only resignation we've got. We've done well with that. uh in uh employment notifications as of today 1218 uh 25 we have 1300 and 76 students that's 23 students less than we had at the same time last year [clears throat] elementary school has 625 students and that's 31 less than they had last year the middle school my number was a little different than Mr. go. I only take my name's Jimmy. I take what they give me. You know, uh he's she said reported
048one uh 136 I mean, excuse me, 336, which is 11 more students than we had at the same time last year. And the high school is staying steady at 392, which is about three students less than we had last year. So, uh we're not increasing in enrollment. We're holding kind of steady, which is good. On the academic programming side, we have completed 89 out of 90 days [clears throat] in the first semester. We only missed one snow day, which was really a uh the heater didn't work is what it was more than anything. But we only missed one day. You've heard our principles talk about they have completed their Q2 benchmarks. Uh I think we've talked about if we haven't is tomorrow is our employee Christmas breakfast. is sponsored by uh Wilson Bank and Trust
049and want to invite all of our employees and our board members. Starts at 8:00. Please come by, say hello. Uh grab a have a biscuit for the for or stay or grab a have a biscuit and go. Uh you've heard our principles talk about uh that they've completed their student surveys and the importance of that feedback where they get to hear that student voice and I think Mr. really articulated that real well in the importance of that. Mr. McCall talked about uh our arm intruder drills. They are required to have one at each school every year and we like to do that when we don't have students in school because it can be quite intimidating, but it is good for our EMS and police to get to know our buildings in the outlay of those.
050So, that's pretty good. Uh some important dates to remember that we have started our Christmas break and that runs till January the 2nd. Our rotary Christmas for kids. I know that Mr. Gregory is going to talk a little bit about that today. But that distribution day is Monday, December the 22nd. So anybody want to come help? Come on. Our professional development day. heard Miss Padru talk about her planning for when we come back, teachers come back one day early, they come back on January the 5th and already she's thinking about how she can best utilize that date. I think that's outstanding. And our students come back on January the 6th. I won't be there, but from a distance, I'll be cheering them on. >> Don't get caught in traffic. >> What's that? You ought to
051come out and just see what kind of traffic it is that >> Oh, I've seen it enough. I know. I got it. I'm going I'm going either get out before the traffic starts or wait until it clears. Um project updates. As far as I know that our chiller is on order and it's supposed to be arrive sometime in January and we'll get it installed in time for for for the spring at the middle school athletic complex. Our doors and windows, exterior doors, all have been installed so we can lock the building up now, which is good. Uh the heat is on and working. They're painting and doing those types of things. We have not turned on the electricity and the water at this time. Waiting on that little bit. The lighting has not been installed.
052They said they had to wait. Mr. go probably explain that they got to wait until they get their fuse box panel and stuff, everything approved before they can start installing. >> Is it all LED lighting? >> Yes, it is. But they've got to get they've got to get all their wiring stuff approved before they start adding the lights. The roof is almost done. There's just a little bit of carnish that they've got to do on the side. And uh I was hoping they that they would get through today. They are so they are so also putting on uh the interior doors and hardware is presently being installed. It really looks good. Uh we've moved the old lockers, the existing lockers we had in the old fieldhouse, the metal lockers. We relocated them to the new
053building. And we did that for two reasons. One, it will save some money. and two, I don't know what we would have done with 50 something lockers in a building that we was going to renovate. So, we've moved those and they're going to sand them and paint them. And I've got some pictures. Yeah, [snorts] good. Got some pictures of that. This is the uh the dressing room where they painted the helmet. I showed you that uh last uh month. And the these are the lockers that have already been installed, but they have not been painted. And those galvanized handle rails look great and they should last for a very, very long time. >> That's a whole lot nicer than the hooks we had when I played for your dad. >> Yeah. >> When you got
054to be a senior, you could get three hooks. [laughter] >> And a freshman, you got a nail. >> It'd be really good. But they're supposed to start prepping those lockers tomorrow, but with it being Friday, I think it'd be more like Monday when the payers uh show up. Uh, and what's great about this as we get down to the end and the substantial completion date on this now has moved to like the third week of February. But as we get closer and we know when this project is going to be completed now we can start studying and getting ready and making preparations for the renovations of the [clears throat] bathroom in the old existing fieldhouse. So, we're starting to have some uh architectural firms look at that and you know, we had ESG down there
055the other day looking at that. So, we're be getting we will be getting some uh uh plans and proposals to the board in the months to come. >> While I'm thinking about it just hit me, especially since we got Kyle here, I think it'd be good for coach and Jennifer to uh think about having like a a I don't know what you would call it, not a grand opening, but a day that the public could come and look at it and probably be the only time they ever get to do that. You know, we don't typically want the public in when use, but if y'all could be thinking about that together and when that might be a good time to do that. >> We already talked to Mr. McCall and some of them about that.
056So, we'll see the date. Good. >> But as we get ready to tie a bow on the athletic complex, then in the same vein, we're going to start talking about the restroom renovation. But we couldn't start the restroom renovation till we had some idea of when this building was going to be completed because we got to relocate our football team. And that's going to take a little a little time as well too. And just concluding is you also have a copy of the maintenance report that Tim Wilson, our maintenance supervisor, has prepared for you. And basically he says that he is working well in all three schools and that bus 17 that uh that the engine went out. It has been sent to Cummings and they're already working on it. He helps have it back
057in five or six weeks. Bus number 12, which ran into Cheese's front yard, has been returned. is back on the route. That's good. And bus 18 was hit by a deer. You ever heard the song Grandma Got Run Over by a reindeer? Bus 18 got run over by a deer. >> That's what happened when Bandy goes looser. >> And I don't know if you saw the picture, but it like crushed the front windshield. And I'm going, "This is going to be a lot of money." But we took it over and got an estimate it was like $3,500. So that felt a lot better than than what I was expecting. The last thing I would like to say, and I don't say it enough, thank you. Thank you for your work. Thank you for what you
058do for our kids. U this has been a 42 years I've been one of the most luckiest person around. I've been able to work in the same school district place where I went to school in the same community I live and I've been able to do work for one school district during my whole career and that's for 42 years and u I appreciate the opportunity. I appreciate the work you do. Um, I think we're leaving the schools district in a good shape and I know we're leaving it in good hands and I know y'all are going to work together and support one another and I do I do believe that our brightest days are still yet to come. But thank you so much. He's been a privilege to serve. And uh it's kind of like
059General MacArthur said, "Oh, soldiers never die. They just fade away." And this soldier just wants to fade away. So, but if I ever need anything, let me know. Thank you much, >> sir. We're not going to let you fade away, though. [laughter] All right. We don't have any old business. So now we are ready for our new business. First, >> you do have old business. >> Huh? >> You do have old business. >> It's not on here. What do we have? >> We supposed to read the letter. >> It's No, no, no. You go ahead. >> I'm sorry. I didn't know we had >> It wasn't on the minutes. I did look at that. It was not on the >> Okay. So, I believe last board meeting uh Mr. Woodard um asked about doing uh
060Miss Huff or some of the teachers who did not get their um bonus because of Miss Days and she was denied. We did send an email to our auditor and they did look up the uh code and everything and this is their response. After speaking with Jeff Bailey, the comproll of the Treasury audit manager, Delaney Oldm, auditor said that the request would need to come from the employee Chelsea Huff, not from a board member, that it was not his place to make the request. She also stated the board had already made a waiver [snorts] to guidelines set in place for the bonuses by approving the current appeal regarding FMLA and if they go back to prior years that this could open a whole other can of worms. Anyone could come out of the woodwork from
061prior years to request an appeal. So they are saying basically they would not recommend doing that. >> Okay, any questions? >> Thank you. Thanks for reminding me. [clears throat] >> No, no problem. I mean, I just >> No, I know. I I just >> I wanted it I wanted to go further and and >> I didn't make a request. I just basically said if we're going to do for one, we should do for the other. >> All I'm trying to do is the right thing. So, if according to them, if she brings brings it up, we will have to address it. >> The the biggest we just let go with that. But the biggest question I would see there is you've already closed the books for that year. I don't have a control. >> I
062understand that. But I mean, right, right, wrong, >> but I don't know. I'm not a controller. I'm not I don't know. We'll we'll deal with that. >> We'll deal with it if it comes up. >> All right. Next two items are some of the uh best things I think we get to do as a board is listen to recommendations for tenure. First from Miss Kelsey Belchure. This is me. >> You the director. Yes. [snorts] >> I didn't know she's [laughter] discussed that. You >> It is a great honor [snorts] to have teachers has worked long enough and efficiently enough in your district to be even considered for tenure. I must also remind everybody of the Tennessee tenure law is that once a teacher a licensed teacher has served a minimum of five years and that's
063five years of evaluation. So sometimes they have to get in year six before we have a fifth year evaluation and they have performed at a level four or five which is above expectations for the last two years. Tennessee code annotated said they must be considered for tenure. They must be considered for tenure which means they have to be recommended by the director of schools and they have to be confirmed by the board of education based on their evaluations based on the recommendation of their principal. Both of them are middle school teachers. He wrote a letter for you as well based on their performance based on his recommendation. I would recommend [clears throat] uh you'll have to vote on a roll call vote. Have to have a roll call vote. Uh you would consider Miss Kelsey
064Belchure and Mr. Coach Kyle Gregory for tenure with Travis County School District. >> Okay. Let's see. Both of our middle school teachers. Mr. Gully, just make sure you agree. >> 100%. I got a letter somewhere there. >> You never know. >> 100%. Yes, sir. >> I figured that. I just want to give you the chance to say it. >> Wonderful. No problem. Yes, sir. I did write a letter for both. I recommend both the letter. >> Yeah. >> Question. >> Yes, sir. >> The only question to make sure for procedure, do we have to do each individual one? Can we do that? >> I thought I'll answer a motion. I'll ask for a second. And then when it comes time to vote, I will call. We'll just kind of go around. I thought it has
065to be roll call. Yes. >> Yes. Any questions about the procedure? Okay. Uh, is Miss Belchure here? Would you like to say anything? Okay. Do I have a motion to approve Kelsey [clears throat] Belure for tenure in the Trto County School System? >> I'll make a motion. >> Motion by Mr. Wood. Do I have a second? >> I'll second. >> Second by Dean. >> Any discussion? All right, we will have a roll call vote and I put myself on it. Mr. Kerr votes yes. >> Dan, >> yes. >> Rachel, >> yes. >> Chris, >> yes. >> It does pass with uh unanimously of the board members that are present. >> So, Miss Belchure has been granted tenure by the Trto County Board of Education. >> Do have Do I have a motion to approve Kyle
066Griot >> for tenure? Motion by uh Chris. Do I have a second? >> I'll second that motion. >> Second by Deian. Any discussion? >> All right, we'll just do it the same way. Uh I vote yes. Dan, >> yes. >> Rachel, >> yes. >> Chris, >> yes. >> Mr. Gregory has been approved [laughter] in the Trio County School System. >> All both votes unanimous. [clears throat] >> So done. >> Okay. Sorry about that. >> Next is the school calendar. Here we are winding up half of one year and then wondering about what day we're going to start next year. >> Jennifer, >> so the teachers were given two calendar options. One being very similar to this year and then the other one had a few little tweaks. They had a week to do it. I
067think we had 114 that it went out to and 101 voted. So only 13 teachers did not and it was like 90% overwhelming option one is what they wanted which is [clears throat] similar to this school year. >> What's the first day of school on that calendar? >> August >> I was in August. >> Uh no July. Hold on. I can tell you >> it's just funny to me how they >> now that they really start. I don't hear no more fussing about July starts in >> July 30th would be the very first day of school. I just don't >> know. Alert. >> What? >> That's what hit my phone. >> Yeah, >> it's a very thunderstorm one. >> All right. So, we have the uh the uh school calendar for next year and the
068teachers have voted and really voted uh pretty big >> to to go with the one that uh I didn't hear you. I might have missed. Do you recommend that calendar? >> I recommend option one. Yes. So we have a recommendation from our director elect to uh for option one. >> Do I is there any discussion? >> No. >> Okay. Do I have a motion to approve option one as the school calendar for next school year? >> I make a motion. >> Motion by Mr. Woodard. Do I have a second? >> Second by Miss Peggy. Discussion. >> No discussion. All in favor, please say I. I. Any oppose, please say no. Does pass unanimously. Next is the strategic compensation plan for uh this school year 2526. Uh strategic compensation plan. >> The only change that you're
069going to see is at the high school level. We are proposing to take out the ready graduate and to add um college and career ready. Um and that being the state is looking at doing away with ready graduate. So it may not even be a thing [laughter] next year. It lags the career that we're proposing to put in is current. So that's the only changes you're going to see on that. Everything else stays the same with this school year. >> Okay? And we talked about this Tuesday night discussion question. >> This is just for the rubric. The one >> just for the rubric. Correct. Just making sure. >> Yep. >> And I'm understanding the rules and everything will stay in place until we have a retreat and work on that. So, as of right now,
070the rules will stay in place until we change those. >> Obviously, I mean, you have to keep rules in place until the uh body changes them. Correct. >> Okay. And again, we talked about this on Tuesday night. The rubrics is what they are for each of the schools. Questions, discussion about the rubrics. Do I have a motion to approve the 2526 strategic compensation plan rubrics for next year? For this year, I'm sorry. I'll make a motion to approve the strategic compensation rubrics. [laughter] >> I have a motion by Deanna. Do I have a second? >> Second by Miss Penny. Any other discussion? All in favor, please say I. >> I. Any oppose, please say no. They pass unanimously. And next is the 2425 strategic compensation middle school hard to staff bonuses. And uh seems like
071we've been talking about this for a while. And uh so uh we have uh some young ladies that are with us tonight that uh would like to uh I've been told would like to address the board about this situation. We're just happy to be considered. I think I know we we put in a lot of years here. Um and we're happy to see it come to the middle school as a hard to staff. We were a little disheartened when we didn't qualify. Um I personally became a little more disheartened when I realized there was no way for me to qualify with my K6 endorsement. I would have to go back to a two-year program at bare minimum to be able to take that endorsement that they're looking for. Um, and just honestly with my two-year
072career, I'd have to give that up to do that. And that's not something that I'm interested in doing at this point. Um, so it was something that I had just let go. And so I appreciate people coming to that for us and trying to make sure that um, you know, the money goes where it was intended to go. I know that it had good intentions and that. >> Yeah, I appreciate it. >> Also agree. I mean I feel as if we've accepted roles that are in those the spotlight is always on us and I feel like you know we have elected to stay in those positions and and take that pressure and all of those responsibilities on and uh you know with the Ksix endorsement we would have to go back and do coursework and
073and the time restraint you know between grading essays and doing I mean it's it's difficult in itself. So, we just appreciate the opportunity for it to be discussed. And so, >> obviously, the report that was given earlier shows the level >> that y'all are working at. And I want you to know I'm I'm not speak I think I can speak for everybody. We appreciate [laughter] what y'all do. >> And it's to say all of us work hard. The whole We're a team. We a whole team. We all We all work hard, >> right? Okay, Jennifer. Um, I would recommend that both Miss Yuing and Miss Ellis receive the hard to staff from this past school year. >> Dr. [clears throat] Okay. [cough] So what we have before us is a uh what we're being asked
074to do is to uh make all the six I mean sixth, seventh and eighth grade ELA and math positions they're already eligible for the uh hard staff bonus, but to make them where those teachers that don't have that have older licenses is be a be able to uh qualify for that without having the burden of going back to school and or taking another practice test or something like that. Uh and that's what they're asking us to do. Mr. Gully, did I state that right? >> I think you stated it very well. My as the board last week, I mean uh Tuesday night as I came and we had that conversation was, you know, two years ago timeline here, this thing we brought on and I appreciate part of staff. Um it is a difficult place
075to find people that want to stand in that line. Um ELA and math um have some some pressure. Um the state will release many things about ELA and math. It's going to be there. Um and in learning how difficult it is to find somebody that's willing to stand those squats, I just ask that the board uh look at a six seven and eight which is already there. We had some lure pieces on it, some extra pieces tied to it. If your license is is allows you to teach in that position, I ask that we pay in those position. >> I've thought about this a lot since last month and it it's it's not their fault that the correct >> the way the state licensing and that kind of stuff over the years. I mean, uh,
076you know, you just just go and obviously uh we appreciate what y'all do and hopefully we're going to uh help you feel better about that. >> Okay, that's a clarifying question and I apologize that I missed Tuesday. >> What we're talking about doing is paying this bonus to these two individuals, right? We are not talking about changing the hard to staff qualifications. >> Not at all. >> Right. Okay. That's >> what we're doing is is is really what it's come down to, and it's what I was trying to say. I may not have said it too well, is is that now teachers who graduate and come into the school systems are able to be more subject specific, >> right? like uh I believe you have someone with a math endorsement that that you can get
077for uh middle school and that type of thing. And uh [snorts] I don't want to say that I I want to say these old people [laughter] these >> these experious young ladies that [laughter] we have teaching for us >> just didn't have the opportunity for that >> and and that's not their fault >> because I'm sure they would have you know uh been happy to have done what whatever the state required [clears throat] at that time. It just, you know, it's just changed over the years. And so I think what we're have the opportunity to do is is really [clears throat] to write a wrong that no one ever thought about as being a wrong until here in the last few couple of months or so. >> And just to clarify, Miss Bodie, um the
078rules and everything, I am looking at changing that and putting some wording in and making it clearer when we have our retreat. I thought it was good that we had some teachers here the other night that gave some suggestions and stuff and we [snorts] were able to have a a back and forth and and that type of thing. And uh but I do think it's very important and I tried to make this clear with them the other night and I want to make it clear again tonight that we give Miss Catherine the opportunity to get in and and have time to look at a good what a what good whatever changes we make are are current or good are good for the system or good for the program going forward. and and doing that just
079willy-nilly in the first few weeks of her uh uh career. I don't think that'd be fair. >> I just I get a little bit concerned about this. This is what I get concerned about. A brand new teacher comes out of elementary education with a K6 degree. >> I don't know that they you know what I'm saying? Like that's where I get stuck. these two ladies have proven themselves and, you know, are are doing what they need to do. But that's that's just where I that's a little sticking point to me. And so I just it's not that I you know, somewhere somewhere the line has to draw, right? I mean, heck, third grade is the hardest stuff. Nobody wants to teach third grade, right? So I mean, [laughter] you can begin to think that there's
080a lot of areas. I mean, the light shines on fifth grade ELA when there's one or two fifth grade ELA teachers, you I mean, there's a there's a lot of those things and somewhere that line has to draw. >> And I feel like for me, that line draws between a K6 degree and a middle school degree because a K6 degree is really an elementary degree. But then I'm looking at these two ladies that, you know, are getting results. So that's tough for me. So for me, it's like my conviction versus what I've seen you all do and what you've done for my children personally. But that's that's where my that's where my line gets. >> But really what you're talking about is rule changes. >> And really we're not making a rule change us to
081have a very vigorous discussion about that at that proper time. >> Right. >> And there will be very clear lines at that time. I've already started working on it. and and the fairness of giving it to the seventh and the eighth grade teachers and not giving it to the sixth grade teachers when a brand new teacher could come out of school with that math degree and take your spot and give that hard to staff. Like that's tough for me. But yeah, >> as I've tried to make clear Tuesday night to the teachers that we're hearing about, we talked about this is no matter what changes, if any, that we make, there's always going to be that employee that just out of the box there >> and you know, and when you're just out of the
082box, you do feel slight and stuff. Okay. >> So, there's no perfect there's no way we can come up with a perfect plan. The the key to it is what I said the other night is everybody, as far as I know, everybody that that teaches for us wants to continue the strategic compensation plan. They like their bonus. They like getting a nice check before Black Friday and all of that kind of stuff. And and that's the key is is we know the vast majority of our teachers like [clears throat] that plan, want to continue that plan, and it's up to us to just try to continue to do it as fairly as we can. And you're always whenever you're trying that, you're always going to get called down on some. Like I said, I'm that
083far out. I'm gonna be busting. So, okay. Hopefully I said that right. All right. So, what's before us tonight is a u uh do we do we want to change the strategic compensation plan for last year and add these two teacher? They're the last two, right, Mr. >> That's correct. >> U to be able to get last year's hard staff. >> I'll make the motion. >> Motion by Mr. order to grant I'm assuming to grant for this >> I didn't want to speak for you. >> Yeah. Yeah. Just to make sure cuz we worded it 100 ways, >> right? >> The grant for this >> for last school year. >> Yeah. For last school year, which actually was for this would be their hard to staff. Yes. They earned it last year, but they were
084gi That's correct. That's exactly right. >> Do I have a second? >> Second by Miss Petty. Any other discussion? No hearing. None. >> Thank you catch up. All in favor, please say I. I. >> Any oppose, please say no. >> It does pass. [clears throat] >> Mr. K. >> Yes, sir. >> Could I speak for just a second? I appreciate what you did for these teachers. Uh, Miss P, you mentioned that line having to draw. >> Um, I won't disagree with that line having to draw. Today, a teacher cannot go get a K6 license. >> It's a K4 and a 58. >> The license that exists that I can look up today. So, when they go, they're going to get one of those license. Um, >> you open a K5. Maybe >> maybe uh we'll
085have to look at that again. But I think as we look at those pieces that they wouldn't be able to have that same license. That's why I say that I think the rules were made the right place in the right thought. And I appreciate us bringing in this harder stat piece. Um, I think we weren't ever trying to cast anybody out of those pieces. We just didn't know all these little pieces existed. And licenses have changed along the way. They changed a lot right as honestly as I was going through, which was been a little while now, I guess, but they had changed a lot going through those pieces. They've been pretty similar since then, uh, since we've, um, gotten to those places. But it's hard to put an individual in those jobs that is
086willing to that has a license that can teach them. Uh, and that's all I was asking for in this case that we that we appreciate the fact that, hey, they're willing to do those jobs and they have a license to do those positions. Um, going forward, those are harder to I think there'll be I think this will be clearer is all I'm saying because those licenses are now a different license. >> And that's what we need to do is update our rules for current licensing. >> Yeah. >> Because I mean, just think about it. I got a I've got a license that says I can teach uh PE K through 12. >> You can't get that in. And I've got another endorsement says I can teach anything K through eight. >> Mhm. >> I mean
087that don't mean I do it well, but that means I can do it. [laughter] I like said the whale. Maybe the whale is a conversation. >> Maybe the whale is a conversation. No, I'm mean going forward. Maybe whale something to think. [snorts] Okay. >> But I appreciate it greatly. Some of y'all think about me. >> Ladies, we thank y'all for being here tonight and for speaking up for yourselves. >> I I wasn't trying to put you on the spot. I think everybody should be able to speak up for themselves. All right. Last on our agenda is a uh it just says proposed street name. Uh those of you that were able to come to Dr. Satfield's reception last week. Uh I know that uh Mayor Jack McCall uh has approved and and let me tell
088you why. What we're talking about is in is in two different uh governmental areas. The school board owns the property inside the fence at the football field, baseball field, softball field. Everything that's with inside that fence is governed by this board of education. Anything outside that fence is governed by the Travis County Board. And I forgot you, Chris, even though I said this last thing, is governed by the Tradal County government. And so, uh, Mayor McCall said last, uh, last week at Clint's retirement reception that the county has approved naming that there's a there's what I guess you would have called an alleyway before that cuts off of Broadway, comes down, but behind where the 4 office is now, and then what used to be an insurance center over there, comes down beside the fence
089that's now part of the uh, uh, county government, used to be city hall and all of that. and comes down and comes into the football complex. And then of course we're going to have a kind of a a roadway once we ever get the new [clears throat] pavement in and all of that. And so uh uh as I talked to you before that we wanted to do something to honor Dr. Satell and I propose the name [clears throat] of Clint Satderfield way and uh so we just have to the county has already approved that and now it's up to the board to approve the part of that that's inside the fence with the property that we govern. So that's what uh is on our agenda tonight is to approve that. So, do I have a
090motion to approve that part of it to be to be named? Uh, also, let me I guess I need to add this. He seemed to have forgot the part where he agreed to get the sign and everything. So, I told Jennifer it looks like we're going to have to get the sign and and get it all put up and stuff. So, let's just add to that that to this that the school board will be getting the signage and having it put up and everything if this is approved for us to do that. [clears throat] Okay. Since it is we are spending a little money. All right. Do I have a motion to approve this? >> Make a motion to approve. >> Motion by Miss P to approve. Uh do I have a second? >> I
091second that motion. >> Any discussion? All in favor, please say I. I. Any [clears throat] opposed, please say no. We do have, and this doesn't change 911 or anything like they'll probably have to look at this just because if you had to send an ambulance, say, to the football field during a game, somebody's getting, you know, got hurt or something. So, there'd probably be something like that. Wayan would know that better than I would. that they're made. But it don't No, no people who live since nobody lives on that, nobody's going to have to change of address forms and stuff like that. >> Mr. Gregory, >> I hear Mr. Gregory. I start to look for my dad. Thank I appreciate the opportunity opportunity to speak before y'all tonight. Um obviously here for the food drive
092but uh before I get to that I just kind of mention of course here representing the Hartsville Rotary Club and you know for years and we've been active in the community especially with with the school systems various activities we do. [cough] Mr. mentioned earlier, of course, you know, the bicycle giveaway that we do at the end of every semester, honor a worthy child. Um, our third grade dictionary project, which is our longest running project. We've been doing that, I believe, about 25 years. Know, every third grade student in in the county gets a their own dictionary. and those former who had had kids go through the school system, your kids almost certainly got one at some point along the way. Um, of course, you know, Dr. Sel mentioned the Christmas for kids program that um
093we'll be setting up tomorrow at the at the in the high school auditorium and giving out on Monday. And I've been involved with that program for about 10 years now. Of course, it it long before that, but we couldn't make it go without the cooperation we've gotten from the school system over the years. Uh Mr. McCall and Dr. Stefford are allowing us to use the school facility, which really makes it easy to to get stuff out. You know, all three principles allow us to make application letters available to parents. It's an easy pick up and drop off point for those. Just re really makes the process run a whole lot smoothly. We'll be ser we'll be servicing 242 kids this year. Suppose we've we've ever had. >> So >> we got students doing their test
094salaries tomorrow to help set up. That's great. >> Yeah. That's good. >> You all do a great job. Rotary club is tremendous in this camp. >> Yeah, we we appreciate that. But uh like I said, the main thing of course here is is the the the food drive that we do every November, which benefits the uh community health center and also serve as treasurer for the health center. So um of course we we we tweaked the format of the food drive a little bit this year. Um in addition to allowing obviously you know to bring uh canned goods, we all we also gave them the opportunity if they wanted to bring cash donations instead just because the health center gets you know we get all our food from Second Harvest Food Bank and we we
095can make a dollar go pretty far there and all three schools combined to raise just just a hair under $6,000 which was the incredible I mean, we we were blown away, you know. We we had no idea what what it was what it would what it would look like. And so, between between the the equivalent of of what the cash and industrial bring in and the actual items that that were dump food items that were donated went up with with the equivalent of over 17,000 items of food, which will go a very very long way at at the health center. And I know I uh talk this afternoon with where's Chrissy Stafford, our our manager there. 2025 with uh health center has served 3,100 people. So that until the impact of that that place in
096in in Trust County, but um the the way the Rotary Club does our food drive, uh uh we give cash we give cash prizes to to each school. Uh winning school gets $250, second place 150, third place 100, and we'll be giving those to the schools in January. um we we determine the winner. We we take the the amount of items per school and divided out by the enrollment. So it it's an average of number of items per student. We feel that's the fairest way to do it because because the elementary has such a higher enrollment. But um uh elementary school got third place this year. So they'll they'll be getting the $100 $100 bonus and but you know their efforts were incredible. Second place school this year they they second place school averaged uh
09713.31 can food items per student which most years would would probably have won this thing. >> One one school just went finished the school. They didn't follow the rules. >> Almost went crazy with it. Average >> book. [laughter] >> The women school this year averaged 24.6 items per student. >> It was >> which I said was incredible. >> Yeah. But now the of course the no the middle school had a sevenyear winning streak. you know, basically had it for what seemed like >> the know the well well that that that streak was broken I believe four years uh three or four years ago. Uh Dr. you know made a when he was at the high school made an effort to win it. So got it. Madrew got it the following year. Mr. Gully then said
098last year he wanted to bring it home and did but this year it it's going to a new home again. So, uh, fourth year in a row at a new a different school has won it. So, County High School is is [applause] >> to take us away from middle school. challenge except here. Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. All right. Let's go. [laughter] >> Y'all ready? One, two, three. One more. One, two, three. Congratulations. Very [laughter] welcome. >> Does this mean just cheated better than you? No, she said [laughter] I'm kind of hearing words. He worked very hard. >> It could just be could just be no whatever. >> My last year's middle school took very seem to be a mass countywide conspiracy >> to take that away from the middle school.
099Mr. G, you were on my side back then. there seemed to [laughter] be a schoolwide board members involved to take that away from middle school who rightly had it for a long time. So >> take that a little personal. So we really worked hard to support Rotary this year and the community upset. >> Awesome. Good job. >> It's just been amazing what y'all did together. >> Well, that's and it's it's Listen, I anytime we do stuff like that, it's fun, but you know, I always tell my home room teachers, it's it's about what you do. If you if you want it to work, you know, I I'll pump it to the kids and give incentives, but you know, like I tell the kids, we're helping other people. It's fun. It's competition. We all want to
100win, but it's helping our community. And that's what it's all about. I know what it's like to get left out of a playoff. [laughter] >> He said you couldn't say anything. >> I was thinking that [laughter] >> maybe maybe we won't have any principal jump in the portal. I did get I stopped by the alternative school to visit one of my students and I was accused of immediately of >> you know he had been there in months and he walked down that he knows where you store the goods and you know I mean it's like oh you need to come by today you know [laughter] it seems like the speak FOR CAMERA access to THE [laughter] >> just had to stop by you >> [laughter] >> Yeah. >> Thanks all three of y'all for what
101y'all done for the people of Tr >> our health center does a tremendous job. Chrissy does a great job down there and it's just just think of all the good that's going to be done especially with the way times are right now. >> So, >> all right. Does anybody have Yes, sir. >> Uh this might be under new business. Um, I went Saturday to a basketball tournament in Herman Springs. We had a we had some boys and girls that actually won the tournament. Uh, I have a question as to why they I asked why they were not wearing purple and gold. Uh, Hy Springs was in their school colors. Red Bull was in their school colors. Uh, even Clay Cam was in her school covers. And I thought, well, so I asked a parent. I
102said, uh, are y'all paying for these? They're like, yes. And I said, why are they not permanently gone? They said, well, the county won't let us. And I thought, do we have a rule that says they can't? And they said, not only that, they weren't even getting to host a tournament to make money here. >> Okay. What kind of ball? What are we talking about? High school. >> Basketball. Yeah. They're not high school sports. You know what we're talking about, guys? >> Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade. Okay. >> Oh, that's a travel team. I don't >> Yeah, but I mean I'm wondering why they weren't allowed school affiliated, >> but they can't. Even though they're buying them theirel, they can't use the school colors. >> I would think, hey, anybody in Hartsville, you know, a
103Trto County school can always wear the purple and gold. As far as I'm concerned, we don't have any rules against it. >> No, the only thing that I talked to them people about was to be sure that there's a clear distinction between the sc the sports that we sponsor and the sports that we don't. We do not sponsor fourth and fifth grade. If we did, we'd be hiring the coaches. We'd be paying insurance. >> Those types of things. The idea was we've had trouble with had some kid hiccups in the past is a child would get hurt on the fourth grade and then they want to come down here and file insurance. Well, we don't. They're not covered in our our insurance. So, the thing that I advised the coaches was let's be sure that
104you do everything you can to be sure that the public understands it's not school affiliated. And they chose to do I mean my my grandsons are on that team too and I think it says >> Creek Bank Legends. >> Creek Banks Legends. And I think it's actually some odd color of blue and pink. That wouldn't be >> pink. >> Yeah. See, that's what I was getting at. Why are they not I mean I understand they're not affiliated, >> but why are they not allowed to race? And they don't have to have traffic. >> We never We never We never told them what color to get. Never. That was never >> that was never asked either. >> But the idea was we told them that we want to be sure that there's a that the community
105understands that it's not >> Yeah. And that's really an agreement between uh >> not an agreement but that's a distinction between the Tra County schools and whoever runs that organization >> and stuff you I mean, I would hope they we want to wear, >> but we let them use our facilities for no charge, >> right? >> Oh, they've been we've been doing this for years. >> So, they can use our facilities. >> They do everything. >> Okay. >> They were using our facilities back when I was >> Well, I I knew that also, but I was under the impression I had one of that's why I'm bringing this up that they weren't allowed to have a tournament here. And I want to clarify you like we've talked about people griping and rumors. Let's let's get
106it out and open and straighten it out. >> Anybody can make a request. >> Yes. >> To the building principal that they want of whichever school they want to use and then that principal would go through the process of determining in conjunction with the director of schools and everything whether or not >> that's a no legitimate. >> I coached it for I've coached it. We heck I coached when he when I was playing, but we've always played home and away games. I don't know about a tournament, but we've always >> That would be a special. That's why I say they would whichever school they wanted to use, they would just need to make a request. >> I mean, I mean, >> I asked the question, it's a pink uniform. >> I know a player and
107they played on a summer travel team and they chose to use the same uniforms. I said I'm trying to eliminate trying to save money then we were aaou in those we were aa in those colors and then it transferred over into >> I got no problem saving money but >> we don't have to right tell anybody >> color they wear >> that's it I mean I just I wasn't aware of that >> I wasn't either ask the Yes. >> Anything else to come before the board tonight? I've just got one last thing. It's an order. Enjoy Christmas. >> Get some rest. I'm bad about I've been bad about saying that for years, but I actually mean for you teachers to say to do it. >> And Zoe Zoe's [laughter] like >> I don't I've never
108had to worry about kids getting most. They seem like they sleep all day. Of course, they're up half the night, but uh but no, seriously, have a safe, >> enjoyable Christmas and uh >> so we come back in January and not have any problems to have to deal with from the holidays. >> So guys, Christmas breakfast in the morning. Hope everybody can be there. Maybe just for a little while, but >> yeah, that's a good good problem to have. times. Maybe you can make both. >> That's right. >> Honestly, I don't know. Do >> I have a motion to adjourn? >> I make a motion to adjourn.
