Order that the record show that a board members is present. This meeting has been duly called and knows this meeting has been closed in accordance with Texas media act Texas government code chapter 551. First item >> first item is open form and we do have one person who has signed up for open form. It is Mr. Michaelson. Okay, >> I'll say in the interum, >> hold on, we got behind some time here. >> We'll get to have some fun with someone who is not in the shape to run from the elementary school. [laughter] >> You got to get your breath. >> Oh, yeah. Well, especially as a a former debate coach. If I go too fast, I'm sorry. >> You ready? >> Yes, sir. >> All right, go right ahead. Through my work in UIL,
I've met a lot of superintendents from 1A leaders who double as the one at play director to a freshly hired superintendent of Dallas ISD. And I've never worked with anyone as pragmatic, passionate, and student centered as Joe Walberg. This is a woman who volunteers to serve food at our UIL tournaments. A woman who went out of her way to timekeep at a one act play contest that we weren't even competing in. and a woman who will enthusiastically discuss fine arts curriculum and one conversation, athletic playoff predictions of the next and then scurry out of the room to do a series of classroom observations ranging from prek foundational skills to high school calculus. Joe Bberg makes you feel like you are the one moment in the room and the one most important thing that is happening
in the world at that moment and that's something that is rare for someone that is sitting in the superintendent's chair. Before she was my superintendent, she was my principal. And I told the story of how when she called to encourage me to apply for the job, I picked it up in the middle of coaching at the UIL state tournament because you never quite lose the anxiety of being called into the principal's office. She tells the story of how when she started at CHS in 2012, I used my badge as a technology student worker to let myself into her office to interview her because I wanted to make sure that my senior year would go the way that I wanted it to. In between those moments, there's one that I haven't ever mentioned to her. I
am a first generation college student who grew up in a low-income household. I come from a wealth of love but limited resources. The idea of one day attending the University of Texas at Austin was one that was reckless, illogical, and seemingly impossible. But after the gossip, I wor my way into a conversation with the principal like every 17-year-old would, and I left it inspired. Joe Bird gave me the courage to press submit on a college application to my dream school. And years later, she gave me the professional courage to do the exact same thing. Press submit on an application to my dream school ISD. In the time that I've worked under Jill's leadership, she's taught me countless things. She's coached me into a better educator and possibly even halfway reasonable administrator. She's helped me set
goals and she's been willing to muse, scheme, and dream with me about what could be. She has a professional relationship with me that has allowed me to feel like for the first time in my career a person before I was a coach, teacher, or employee. We've seen each other laugh, cry, and be angry enough to call them flying monkeys, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. In spite of recent announcements, Splberg has prioritized the need of our students, our staff, and our employees by expressing no interest in us fueling the TEA's intervention. As the person that defends our school on Facebook for a living, I selfishly request that same action. But more importantly, however, as someone that respects and admires our leader, I ask that you protect the legacy of not only your tenure
on this board, but hurst into superintendent by allowing for a seamless transition to begin. A proud educator and resident of Lacy Lake, who also just so happened to be our governor, once said, "I did not want my tombstone to read. She kept a really clean house. I'd like them to remember me by saying she opened the government for everyone." As Bodberg, I cannot speak to the cleanliness of your house, but I can honestly say as a third generation employee, second generation graduate, and a member of this community that you have opened this district up for great success. And for that, we are all under that. >> Thank you, sir. >> Okay. Now, first up, >> uh, considering possible action on the December 11th correspondence from Commissioner Morath. Um, I know it was shared with you
all via email and then when you arrived this evening, you also had a mailed copy and a certified mailed copy of the letter from Mr. Morat. They did an informal review yesterday. I did not attend. I was told I did not have to attend. Uh and then now that that has gone through, there will be a finalized um determination. Um there is the option that the district can appeal the decision. I did tell Mr. Carter that I don't want or I am not requesting that there be an appeal. um just because the last three months of waiting for the decision has been pretty excruciating on everybody and I don't want to prolong >> um that process. So, if we do not appeal, they will start either way. You get a conservator right off, but um
they have their first meeting seeking a board of manager candidates in the district on scheduled for January the 22nd. Um they do have it open for applications. I've been told it takes about two hours to complete the application to be on the board of managers. they will select from those candidates after they do trainings and so forth like that and it will likely um if everything goes and there is no appeal um a new board of managers would come in in probably April April May somewhere in there. So, I feel we could probably all cuss and discuss, you know, everything that's gone on or why it should or should not happen, but um I just want to make sure that our kids are taken care of and and the staff. We have wonderful staff here
and I know that we have put a lot of things in place to turn the corner. we just haven't had the time to do it and it really it was hard getting two years or three years of accountability all within about six months >> adults. So [clears throat] that's that's the portion that really kind of set us back. But um if you look at and read all of the other articles, there are districts who have made some of the required changes even before their year five, but they are still being put under managers as well. I mean, they've closed the campus. They've already reconfigured their district and and so forth. But um that was kind of one of our plans moving forward, but um and I feel that will still continue and be an option
that they will carry out. But um you know even for those districts who had already done it and he is imposing the same intervention I I feel like making an appeal would be fruitless and would just prolong the process >> anybody want. >> Not that I'm aware of because you're appealing it to him >> initially and then it it actually goes to their >> social or whatever it is. >> So >> he told us when you and I met with him that if he's done nothing criminally wrong [clears throat] >> Yeah. >> then the appeal doesn't go through. And I mean I feel he's done something criminally wrong what he's doing to our district but it's not a criminal action. So I think >> I >> trust me it's a hard pill to swallow and
um I think for me it's part of my pride. >> Yeah. >> You know um that this is not the note that I want to go out on. >> I mean to go out you don't deserve to go out on it. But I don't know that appealing is going to do anything except cost the district more money. >> Correct. That's my >> I 100% agree. >> Yes. We we put together, we meet with our attorneys, we go down, we say everything we're going to say to the same person that's already made the decision. So I'll say how that no. So, while I would love to appeal, I just don't know what to do other than do what's best for our district. So, >> I agree. >> I Any other discussion? I make a motion that
we do not appeal Mr. uh Commissioner Morat's decision based on the letter sent to us on December the 11th. student made a motion. Keith Lowry seconded to what you said >> to approve the correspondence. >> Correct. >> Not appeal with no appeal. >> Thank you. Motion to second on the floor. Any further discussion? >> Hearing none. All voting for Miss Dian Davis. I'm sorry. Miss Dian Davis >> I. >> Miss Heather Johnson. >> Steven Carter. I Mr. Key. >> Hi. >> Mr. Kathy Coker. >> All voting for motion carries. This board will now adjourn into executive session pursuant to the following section of Texas Open Meetings Act 551.074. 074551.102 at 610. [clears throat] >> We are ready. >> I make a motion that we accept the employment of coach Willie Carter as our head football
coach. >> Second and we have no Okay. Uh Stephen Carter made the motion. Heather Johnson seconded to employ Mr. Willie Carter in [clears throat] the head football coach position. >> Motion to [snorts] second with any further discussions. >> Hearing none. All voting for Oh, sorry. God, I keep bad habit. Uh, Miss Diane Davis, >> I. >> Miss Heather Johnson, >> I. >> Steven Carter. I Mr. Keith Lowry. >> I, >> Miss Kathy Coker. >> I. [clears throat] >> All voting for motion carries. Need a motion to adjurnn. >> So move. >> Second. [laughter] >> Keith Lowry made the motion. and Heather Johnson seconded to adjourn this meeting. >> 627 >> at 627. >> Any further discussion? >> Miss Diane Davis >> I. >> Miss Heather Johnson. >> Hi. >> Steven Carter. I >> Keith Lowry.
>> Hi. >> Miss Kathy Cooker. >> Hi. >> All voting for. Motion carries. Thank y'all so much. Thank y'all. Thank you. Thank you. You have any questions? Don't
