001It is 7:00 p.m. and uh we do have a quorum here that has been established. If you would uh gentlemen remove your cover as we uh offer our invocation. Holy Father God, we thank you for today and all that you richly blessed us with. Dear God, we ask that you be with us tonight as we discuss the matters of this school. Dear God, we pray that you help us to uh keep the kids' best interest at our heart and all the decisions that are made. And God, we pray that you forgive us where we fall short of your glory with our sin. It's in Christ's precious name that we pray. Amen. >> Amen. >> Next on our list is our public forum. We have five individuals signed to speak this evening. Individuals who wish to

002participate during the portion of the meeting designed and designated for public comment shall sign up between 8:00 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the board meeting date as specified in the board's procedures on public comment and shall indicate the agenda item or topic on which they wish to address the board. A speaker will be given up to five minutes to address the board. Under the Texas Open Meetings Act, the board is not permitted to discuss or act upon any issues that are not posted on the agenda for the meeting. Unlawful or disruptive conduct, including interrupting scheduled speakers, speaking out of turn, or interfering with the rights of others will not be tolerated. Each participant is legally responsible for the content and consequences of his or her own statements. First to speak is Cha Jones. >> So,

003um I'm Shana Jones and I'm speaking as a teacher, a parent, and a community member. Um it is my understanding that Mr. Maryman's job was being questioned, but with some discussion, things got ironed out. And for that, I am very thankful. That says much about Mr. Maryman's character. if you feel he heard you and is willing to work on your concerns. We are fortunate to have Mr. Marman and we don't need to run the school family that we have here. I know and have experienced good and bad administration as I have worked for other districts and my parents were both educators. I have been micromanaged. I have had conferences taken away for unnecessary meetings. I have had to turn in pages of lesson plans. I had principles in and out of my classroom disturbing my

004teaching. I have had to follow scripted curriculums that allowed for no creativity. I have had principles not answer my questions ignore my phone calls and emails. I have had principles that never showed up to students extracurricular activities. I've had administrators that have allowed a student to hit my co-worker, return to the class with no punishment, and then get to pick a toy off of the Walmart app at the end of the week for not hitting his teacher anymore. Those are examples of bad principles. Mr. Mr. Marman is the opposite of what I have described. When I tell my former co-workers that Mr. Marman is my principal, they tell me they miss him, that they appreciated how he handled discipline and that when he left, their school went downhill. Maryman attends most, if not all, extracurricular

005activities. That says a lot to me personally. I love seeing his wife and daughters attend school events with him. That makes it feel like we're family. Mr. Mr. Marman is one I can openly speak with. I have addressed issues with him and offered suggestions and not once has he not listened to me or respected me. And most importantly, anytime I have ever needed assistance with any problem, especially discipline, he has helped immediately. What I absolutely love about Mr. Maryman is that he allows me to be creative with my teaching. He allows me to choose the ways that I teach students as long as I am teaching what the state requires them to know. He has numerous times told me to do what is best for my students. Wow, how fortunate I am to work for

006a principal like that. It's easy for me to say this because I have indeed have the exact opposite of Mr. Maryman. I also have the privilege of teaching his daughter. You can tell how a child is raised in the home they come from by how a student acts in the classroom. His daughter is the ideal student. so respectful, a great listener. She has so much background knowledge that she shares with her classmates and she's an eager learner. This is a student that we need here at Herley ISD. Sorry, I love my school ladies. Because Mr. Marman was the principal at a prior district where I taught. It was one of the main reasons why I chose to come here to work. Although not born and raised here, I have lived in this district for over

00710 years. I have lived in many small towns because my father was a coach and Hermley feels like home. My daughters and I love Hermley. The academic side's doing well. More opportunities for non-athletes are becoming available and the athletic program is strong. This is all a part of a stable administration and a powerful staff. I love hearing and seeing how so many wish that their students could attend Hearnley, plus all the people that say they love that their students are attending. To me, that is something to be proud of. And why would a parent want their child to attend Hermley ISD if their administrator is so bad? In fact, many people that have talked to me want their children here because of Mr. Marman and because of the staff that we have. Everyone talks about

008family out here. It's even what our athletic team has on their uniforms. We are already going to be facing some big changes with key staff leaving and I think it will be even harder picking up the pieces if we lose an administrator too. Let's remain a family. Next up is Samantha Sanchez. Good evening. I understand that one of the things on tonight's agenda is in regards to Mr. Marman's contract and whether or not it will be renewed. I would like to first say, Mr. Marman, thank you for everything you do here. Myself, along with many other staff members, notice and appreciate all of it. I know there's a lot of behind thes scenes work that you do that we don't see. And although I'm sure not every day is a picnic, you still come here

009every day to support your staff and your students. And we appreciate it. I understand board members that it is your job to make decisions that are for the better of the staff and the students. And that's why I decided to speak tonight and hope you take what I say into consideration. From the day I was hired, I was welcomed and assured that if I needed anything to let him know, and he would help how he could. And every time I've come to him, he's done just that. I watch him walk up and down the hallways to make sure our students are doing what they need to be doing. And he does that not only during school hours, but also after. I've also had the privilege of helping teach his daughter Everly in class. She's one

010of the sweetest, most well- behaved and respectful little girls that you will ever meet. And that comes from teaching at home. And I love that we have a principal that's instilling those values in not only his children, but our students. And isn't that what we all want is better for our kids? I would like to point out that I'm also a mother of students that go here. I have a freshman and I have an eighth grader. The few times I've had an issue come up, I've asked to speak with him and he's had it taken care of. I've dealt with a few different principles in the past who are the complete opposite. There are many things that I would like to say, but I will end with this. I love Hermly. I love the staff

011here. I love the students here. And Mr. Maryman wholeheartedly will back us all every time. Thank you. Next is Tammy Barry. >> Do you want me to go there or can I just stand right here? >> We can hear you. >> That's what I was counting on. cheat sheet. First of all, I want to thank all of y'all for serving on the board and taking the time to listen to us. I don't have here as long as the others. Y'all know I like to talk, but I'm not very good at public speaking. I'm not at all. So, y'all bear with me. I just I felt led to say a few things on about Mr. Marryman. Um, I've been here a long time. I've seen a lot. I think me and Coach Gibson, I think we're

012the we're the old crew. Yeah. The OG's. We're the only ones left that's been here that long. >> Um, and so with that being said, I've seen a lot of superintendent and principles come and go a lot. and I can confidently say that he's the best principal we've had since Mr. Speaker. And I think that says a lot um in my opinion. If y'all knew Mr. Speaker, um I'll tell you why I think that too. Because he he's a strong consistent principal. And by that I mean that his consistent leadership has built trust and it's created the stability that the students, the staffs, and the families need. And we're thriving under that leadership. Under our current administration, we have the opportunity to build something we once had here at Hermley, and that is consistency. I

013thank y'all for your time and your consideration. Next is Wendy Early. So I along with a couple other people in here were on the hiring commun when we hired Mr. Rman. I'd hire him again today and any day. I think that he is a a strong leader. He is a good principal. He keeps the teachers in mind but the students in mind as well. But that's a balance and that has to be reached and some people can't do that. He does that really well. He doesn't make us do little things that don't really need to be done just so that it looks good like putting up the eye will we will on the board. that's not going to make our kids pass. He wants us to teach and he wants us to he trusts us

014as professionals to do what we do. So, I just want to say that I would hire him anytime and I would love for him to stay here. And next on the list is Jeremy Hogan. >> All right, I'm going to go a little bit different. I don't have enough information to form a opinion about Mr. Marman. Only what I would call hearsay or what I've seen. So, I'm going to go this. This board does not have the right to even vote on his contract. This board is here for three reasons. The budget, set a tax rate, secure the school, and hire a superintendent. If that man says, "I want to keep my principal there." Y'all don't vote on winners. If you two are gone, who's and he's here, who's in control of this school? And

015he's >> I just think I am. >> But you would be you're the next call on the list. You don't go vote for him. >> You have no control over that man's job, but he would suck for this guy or this guy when they're they're out. There's it should be immediately tabled and removed from the policy that that the principal is even in the scope of the board. That is his choice. His choice alone period in the story. >> You're welcome. >> All right. I thank you all for participating in our public comment section. Next up on our agenda is Cardinal Spotlight. >> Cardinal Spotlight this month is Coach Gibson and his esports team. I think he has has a crew here. >> We're going to bring him in. >> Oh boy. >> Okay, just

016quick about this. This is my video uh game design class. Now listen, I have 17 of these guys, okay? They're all not here, obviously. Uh, it's an entry- level curriculum about concepts and video games. Um, there are lots of talented kids. Uh, who's the best in this group, Whitney? >> Okay. >> No, is not here. It's Levi. >> Maybe Parker's pretty good, too. Um, it gives them a different way to compete. Y'all tell them what esports would be because they they may not know. Some people may not know what esports is. It's more or less us going against other schools in competitions of video games like Fortnite, Marvel Rivals. >> So, we would play other other team other schools. Um, all colleges have esports teams. Uh, we talked with Rule. Uh, who was the other

017one? >> Southland. We asked Lorraine and Trent. They said they would be all interested in coming to Hermley in the fall and playing our group of 17 kids in esports. So have a little tournament. Um and it's just another opportunity for these kids to succeed in like a career path. And so >> also schools give college or give scholarship. >> They do. Lots of lots of colleges have scholarships for this. And some kids want to do video game design and it's just another opportunity for them to succeed. So >> Heath, talk about what y'all are learning that like the self-control of getting angry and things like that. Yeah, you know, we talked about how, for example, >> not throwing your controller at the screen. >> Thanks, Elaine, for putting me on the spot. >> I

018think it's great students. >> I know, right? So, on the football field, you see a kid, I don't know, maybe a kid like Hayden >> that maybe gets frustrated. He comes to the sideline, he throws his helmet down, and everybody's like, "Oh, man. He's just a frustrated athlete. He's a he's, you know, full of adrenaline. He just wants to make the play." Well, the kid throws a controller down and they're a crybaby. And we talked about, you know, why is that? Why is there why is the stereotype of, you know, this versus this? And so, we've talked about stereotypes. We talked about the health part of how much sleep you get, what you eat at night. Uh we've talked about what their roles would be. They all took a survey to see what their favorite

019roles would be towards uh video game design. And so, uh, there's a lot of things that go into it, but we're just kind of tip of the iceberg. But they've got jerseys designed. We don't have jerseys ordered yet, but there's jerseys designed, so they when they compete, they'll all look the same. So, in the fall, look for us maybe supporting us and coming and watching an esports tournament. So, >> we'll get jerseys. >> They're pretty sweet. Yeah. So, that's all I got. Thank you'all for coming, guys. I appreciate it. CAN WE allow >> Can I be a teacher? >> I shoot the staircase. >> Next on our agenda is the uh superintendent report. >> Uh first enrollment attendance. Uh you can see that we are still up about 11 kids from this time last year

020and our attendance is uh 3% higher. Um we've we've consistently had, you know, 97% attendance every every month, which is was pretty outstanding when 95 is our goal. Um I think we even had one kid try to enroll today that office showed up. So um so our our numbers are good and our attendance is high. Budget report, you'll see that the next page. Um still still lower than we were at this point last year. Um you can see the different functions and and where we're at um towards each function. And I know Jerry's here. He'll talk about some maintenance stuff, but we we've had some, you know, bigger expenses come up over the last few weeks with, you know, septic system failing, uh furnishes, air conditioner went out, and so things things like that happen.

021Um and and it just it just costs money. It's the things you got to fix. And know Jerry's been working on her um >> that's the electrician. >> Fire alarm system. >> That's that's bigger issue. >> Yeah. So um so so the budget is is on line with where we need to be >> April 9th. Right now, we have that scheduled for the town hall meeting, the bond town hall meeting at 6 PM. The web the website for the bond should be almost up and running. Um I know last year they came last year, last week they came and and shot some video. Um and they put together a website that we'll have a link on our website with a tax impact calculator um and other tools for um for information sharing on the bond.

022April board meeting day. April 20th is the third Monday. >> That works. That is all. >> Any issues members with April the 20th? >> No, but April does that. Is that going to be up here? >> Yes. >> Okay. probably in the cafeteria. >> All right, next on our agenda is the principal's report. >> Okay, we had we're getting ready for STAR. Um I would do data meetings today was teachers, but uh we decided to go ahead and open the maps testing window. So we'll test those starting tomorrow. They'll put all that into their data sheet and then we'll meet kind of one-on-one do data meetings over the next couple weeks uh preparing for the star test. Um getting down to the the last few weeks, the last push and big review for it. Um

023transfer window will open April 6th and close April 23rd. So they need to fill out transfer. That's for prek new preK kids and any that are wanting to transfer out. You'll have to come out and fill those out with us and provide a report card and then we'll be having transfer meetings and sorting through all that end of April, 1 of May. So that is all for the principal report. >> Next up is the athletic report. Uh lots going on. The next three weeks are super busy. Um we've got something every night. Uh got junior high track tomorrow, softball tomorrow, baseball game got cancelceled on. And then we've got golf, tennis, track um Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and softball baseball Friday. And then softball and baseball start district next week. Um and their play. We'll host

024the uh invitational high school meet on Monday of next week. And then um we were supposed to be a dual meet there. Spring's crazy. So, we actually have to run our district junior high meet that we're hosting um next Friday, which is unfortunately Good Friday, but the only date that we could all make it work. And so, that'll start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. And then, um the week after on that Tuesday will be our district meet, which will be at IRA. And uh man, that's that that week's busy. We got district tennis on Thursday, district golf on that Wednesday. And so, um lots lots going on in the next three weeks. And of course after that we have um regional tennis and regional uh golf as well um baseball softball gamesplayoffs and so super

025busy in the next uh the next three or four weeks. All that stuff's on our um Google calendar for the school. So if you got a paper one don't w that up throw it away. If you ever need to look at what's going on look at that we as soon as there's any change that's updated. Uh we had regional powerlifting over the last two weeks. Harley Henderson placed sixth in her division, her weight in her weight class, which is really good for her. And then Remington and Zayen Hardy both placed ninth. They were ended up ninth in their weight classes. And so really good job for them. And uh we had uh cheer triyouts and those have been selected. Those were posted. Um oh gosh, I could name them all, but I'd probably miss a

026few and I don't want to do that. So, those are posted and out there and they'll start doing some fundraising stuff for uniforms and uh cheer fittings and all that stuff. So, that's a that's a cheer parent problem that I'm sure I'll face in the future, too. I already get it. All right. Next up, Jerry, operations report. >> Yeah, like Mich said, we have uh Coach Gibson Sewart is finally up fixed and running. >> Thank you. Um, thank you so much. >> We're starting to have issues with Mr. Lerbees, unfortunately. Um, so we just had Ray came out today and kind of got some measurements and some things. Hopefully, we'll have numbers on that within the next day or two as far as what it'll take to repair that one. His doesn't need a full

027replacement. Um, just because I guess it has had some attention about 10 years ago. So, he does actually have tanks, not just >> what they had accessible. So, >> that's as disgusting as it sounds, by the way. >> Um, we've had G or not, well, not Gibson's air conditioning, but his water heater obviously was replaced as well. We spent a lot of money on their house for last month. Um, Mr. Ellerby had some air conditioning issues. Probably going to have to replace that unit before too long along with Kobe's U, which he got the new property um that we just recently renovated. Um, we did have that air conditioner gone through, but um, there's some other issues that we're hopefully be able to plug it along, but hoping we can, but I doubt that. Um,

028and we got we received the new steam table today in the cafeteria. Just actually got it finished about 5:30 this afternoon. So, cafeteria will be able to use that and students will be able to kind of hopefully make their make it a little easier for the those ladies there. um fire uh Abco Fire was here today to do inspection, but also to walk through and give us some ideas on what we're going to have to do to get our fire system up to code. Um we have been yellow tagged a few times. Um and we're currently on a yellow tag just because our display's not working and we have a couple of um notifiers that aren't um communicating and so we don't want to get a red tag obviously. So, we've been trying to make

029some repairs and try to keep the fire chief and marshall off of us for a little bit. So, um hopefully we'll have some numbers on that before too long. Um and then been working with Aspen Electric. They just about got all the exterior lighting back up and running. Um it looks like a prison around here now. You walk around. Um >> so, but we did get rid of all the Yeah. at night. Sometimes during the day, you come to the front office that day. Um but so uh hopefully we'll have all that done within the next by the end of the week they'll be 100% completed. So we did get some lights for the light poles and added a couple of security lights in areas that were really dark. So but other than that we're

030just plugging along spending lots of money on areas that I wish we didn't have to but and they're very expensive deals. So counseling report. Um, so right before spring break, I met with McKenna Vento leaison from region 14 came in and we just visited with about how we can better serve our McKenna Vento students. Um, which there's not very many. There's a handful of them and they're all being served. We've accepted four new students into the GT program. We finished our real essentials class prior to spring break. Thankfully, um, Miss Gibson took Cameron Grimes was our senior of the month for February and so she took her to the Rotary Club and they enjoyed lunch. I finished Tailpass testing. We had four students, I think, four, four or five, four, I think, that took our

031TP pass test. So, I finished that. We had 911 presentation come in for um they presented to first and second grade classes at the beginning of March. And then we had um a guy come in and present to our seventh, eighth, and ninth graders from TS from TSTC about a summer camp that they're doing. Um there's two different days and I have some flyers for that which so far we haven't had any students interested but um found out this afternoon that our caps and gowns for seniors will be delivered tomorrow. So one will be here tomorrow at 10:00. >> Junior rings >> he'll bring Yeah, he's he was waiting on two more rings, but I have seniors that are wanting to get their senior pictures done. So he has the caps and gowns, so he's

032going to bring that. and I'm assuming the rings that he has with him and then he'll bring those other two whenever he those get done. Um, which one is my own kid so I'm not too worried about it. Um, we had star security training today with staff. Um, Mr. Marman, Mr. Ellerby, Miss Anderson and I met with Molly Fleming from WTC, the dual credit lady at WTC. um and just discuss how we could better serve our dual credit students. We have high school UIL at IRA on Wednesday. There's 14 high school students going and then Miss Anderson, Miss Early, and myself will be taking them. Um Ty Thompson has been selected as senior of the month for um March. I will test 18 students on their ACT or give the ACT test to 18 students

033on April 1st. And then this all of our STAR testing is in is done in April as well. And then on April 28th, um I have my freshman orientation meeting that's for that's mandatory for next year 9th graders and parents. And um then a dual credit meeting that I do every year for the students and parents in that that afternoon. I don't remember what time and I didn't write it down like 5 or 5:30 something like that. I just got an email from the service center. The lady was going to come and do CPR training for our seniors on April 28th as well, but she can't come that day now, but she can come April 29th. There was nothing on the calendar, so I'm hoping that's good. Um, so we'll do senior CPR training other

034than those that have already done it with uh football and law enforcement training for the seniors on the 29th. That's all. >> Thank you. >> That's a lot. >> Do we have an egg report? >> I do. >> Yeah. I feel like I just need a while. I've been gone for a while. Anyways, um finishing up major sock shows. So, I'm going to just run through some results. I feel like it's going to be a lot, but I feel like these kids need to get some recognition if they deserve it. So, St. Angelo finished that up with the rabbit show. You already got some of those results from Mr. Marman whenever I was gone last month. So, rabbit show, Reagan got best of breed with a Jersey Woolly, a second in a fifth place with

035a Jersey Woolly. first with the silver martin, second with an American buzzy lop. Keegan got second with a cinnamon, seventh with a Dutch. Harper got seventh place Holland lop. Mavis third place English lop and a ninth place Netherland dwarf. Um we go to San Antonio. We have Payton. She got fifth place with her steer. Sie got sixth place with her steer. Weldon got third place with his market barrow. on the Houston. I didn't hear about I think Welen was showing today, but I never got his results, so I need to go ask her. But Payton got fourth place and Satie got 10th with her steers. And then Houston, Payton got fourth place with her steer and Lily got sixth and Harper got seventh. So, finished up major show season. Really proud of those guys. We

036do have a few more students that have done exceptionally well that aren't technically under Hermly FFA, but they're they're still family here. So, Tatum Beck Prize, she's done amazing this year. Um, as well as Parker Wallace and Brennan Brennon Park. Yeah, they've all done great and even though they're not technically mine, we're proud of them. Um, and then we're on to CDE season. We went to Anson with a milk quality team and we got third place as a team. um a bunch up coming that we're all just having to teamwork and get kids everywhere. So tomorrow we have Cisco with entomology and milk. April 1st is St. Angelo with entomology, livestock and milk. April 2nd, Howard College livestock judging. April 6th, Sweetwater Invitational milk quality in livestock. And then April 18th is our area contest

037where we make it try and make it to state. So that is all. Uh moving along to our action items. First on our list is to consider and take possible action on the approval of the board minutes as presented in your packets. Move. Second. Have a motion made and seconded to approve the minutes as written. Is there any further discussion? All in favor? So next is to consider and take possible action on the approval of payment of bills and investment report. I'll make a motion to approve. >> A second. >> We have a motion made and seconded to approve the uh payment of bills and investment report. Is there any further discussion? All in favor? Next is to consider and take possible action on staff development minutes waiver. >> Okay, this waiver lets us count

038our staff development days as operational minutes within our calendar. So it's basically it's the same as an instructional day. Um, so approving this waiver will be for next year like our our Fridays at the end of every six weeks will count as instructional minutes to include in our time. >> I'll make a motion. >> Motion's been made and seconded to consider and take possible action on the state development amendments to wait for approval. Is there any further discussion? All those in favor 6. Next up is to consider and take possible action on the 2026 2027 school calendar. >> All right. It's pretty much the same as this year. Um it did short um this year. Uh Good Friday fell on the end of the six weeks. Um, so it it counted as a holiday and

039a um end of six weeks um day, but next year it moved to March 26th, so it didn't align. So to keep the same amount of days, you could you have to have at least two days built in in your minutes for bad weather because you don't get any waivers after two days. So to take to make up for that day, it came at the expense of that Thursday, the 17th before Christmas. Um so Thursday the 17th would be an early release uh rather than that Wednesday. Um also we'll be doing so we're not starting in July. We'll do new teacher um on Monday, August 3rd, and then have staff all staff report Tuesday, August 4th. Other than that, it's pretty similar. >> Yes. And our spring break aligns with WTC staff. >> Yes. And

040all those blue blue days in the calendar, those are our staff development days. So those actually count as additional minutes for our time. >> I'll make a motion approve it. Second motion's been made. The second was >> okay. Any further discussion on the school calendar? All those in favor >> that was 10. >> This year's been the best calendar. >> Awesome. >> All right. The uh board will now move to go into executive session 7:37 p.m. under Texas government code 551.074 personnel matters specifically the principal and teacher contracts to deliberate the appointment employment evaluation reassignment duty discipline or dismissible to public officer employee or to hear a complaint charge against an officer and employee. All right, we are reconvening. It is now 8:02 p.m. We will move back up into our action items. Action item

0415E is to consider and take possible action to appoint person to fill vacant board position. >> I want to make a motion Williamson. Second. We have a motion and a second for John Williamson to fulfill the remainder of the term until November of this position. Is there any further discussion? All in favor? So, may God have mercy on your soul. Next item is 5F. Consider and take possible action on the future contracts as presented. >> I'll make a motion to approval. >> Second. We have a motion and a second to pres to approve teacher contract renewals for the 2627 school year as presented. Is there any further discussion? All in favor? and finally 5G is consider and take possible action on the principal contract. >> I'll make a motion to approve it. >> I'll second

042it. >> We have a motion in a second to approve the extension of Mr. Mr. Marman's contract for one year until June the 30th of 20 28. Is that correct, Mr. Marman? >> Yes. >> Okay. Is there any further discussion? All in favor? All opposed? Those abstaining? >> Wow. Can Joe and Casey can I ask why? >> Well, I can't. We've already discussed that. >> Jo, you absolutely can. >> You absolutely can in the meeting.
