um good evening and welcome to this called meeting of the north side Board of Trustees and before calling this meeting to order the board would like to take just a moment to briefly review some of the rules for um conducting our meeting the purpose of this meeting is to conduct board business for that reason it is held in public um if there's anyone here that would like to sign up for an agenda item please do so I don't see anybody that I don't recognize and this meeting will then be officially called to order please stand bow your heads as trustee Joseph Medina leads us in the invocation and pledges of Allegiance as we assemble here this afternoon in the common pursuit of this Greek Nations wealth our children amen amen student flag of the United
States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all honor the Texas flag I pledge allegiance to the Texas one State under God one and indivisible okay thank you Mr Medina the Board of Trustees on November 8 2022 beginning um let's say 310 or until Carol um joins us an executive session will convene and close meeting accordance with Texas government code sections 551.071-2551.084 and discussion will take place on our discuss discussing with our attorney um about the superintendent search okay the Board of Trustees on November 8th 2022 beginning at 407 PM we'll convene in open meeting and we will discuss the superintendent search process we have with this Mike Moses and David Thompson gentlemen um where would you like to begin thank y'all
drew me okay thank you madam chairman and members of the board let me say again um in in your public meeting how how honored David and I are to have the opportunity to work with you and for your vote last week and inviting us to be back in your District we have the highest regard for this District we've told you that and I I want to say it again and I've been thrilled to watch this district for many years to get to work with previous leaders previous board members and just um so much gratitude for all of your work uh this is obviously a hugely important undertaking Kudos again publicly to Brian Woods for his service and his tenure here in this District you're certainly again proud of that um to kind of we we
are we want to get a proposal correct for you and don't even say a word about that uh and you will have that shortly but we are doing that so that it is meet your standard what you expect and also if I might say so meets what David I expect as well um to I think the easiest way to maybe talk about the approach to the search is to deal with the timeline and if you you have some documents in front of you just get us started if you look at the one that is a timeline we could talk from that for a minute uh and maybe get get your feelings about this and let me say at the very top it says suggested timeline which means it is suggested that you approve it it's
yours you can tell us hey David Mike it doesn't work and he'd do something different and we're uh we're listening but we have to start somewhere in terms of where do we want to wind up let me turn your attention to the uh last page or to the second page of that document and it's kind of what Stephen Covey says you begin with the end in mind and we have tentatively you just kind of had to pick a pick a place and say that a new superintendent might be here by April I understand you have some things going on next spring including an election some decisions have to be made some things have to be done we have backed that up to the point that the day after uh students return from spring break which
I believe is April 20th you would be able to approve the March I'm sorry I said April March thank you get me in the right month March 20th you would be able to improve approve an employment contract in order to do that though you have to 21 days prior to that time you have to name a loan finalist which falls back to February 27th well to get that done to identify a finalist on the 27th what has to take place well the week before that we have to have X done some things like background checks District visits site visits if you would like to do that if you'd like to do that we coordinate it final agreements anything we want some time to completely make and and let me say this we like I said
it to you last week we have a tendency to slow you down a little bit at the end so we don't just go let's get we've seen them we've talked to him let's get something done we will probably say let's make sure everything all the eyes are dotted T's are crossed because you're going to present someone to your community and you want to be sure that I use the word pristine you want to be sure that it is really really nailed so that's what happens the week of February 20th through the 24th well how do we get there well we have to finish up a second round of interviews we usually recommend two rounds of interviews you could say to us we might want to do one final round okay if you do but we'll
just say from our starting point we're thinking two rounds of interviews the second round the week of February 13th through the 18th usually involves a couple of people could be three but usually it's down to a couple because the first round of interviews that week before is February 6th usually involves somewhere around five to seven people uh do you say well we'll narrow it down from five or six to three you hadn't narrowed it down much still dealing with it's usually will David and I will say to you say well why don't we narrow it down to two we've had boards call us up and say we know who it is we got our one just just bring one back just bring one back for a second round and we're going to say no because
what happens if one says no what happened if one decides we're not we're not there yet what happens if you can't make an agreement with one so we're always going to have to have to want to keep at least two and maybe an unusual circumstances three in that second round first round five to seven okay how do we decide who's going to be in the first round if you look at that June January 30th day that's a big meeting that's a big big meeting that's a that's a important meeting you say you want us to start at five four three seven whatever time y'all tell us you want to start we'll be here that day but we need to plan on three hour minimum because that's good we're going to spend some time looking carefully
at candidates and talking you and as we have expressed you will see the name of every single person that expresses an interest in the in the position well how do we get to January 30th excuse me before you leave that page so you have background checks on um scheduled after the interviews I just I guess I wonder why that particular order um depending on what's in the background checks the board may not even want to go forward with an interview absolutely probably should say final background checks okay David and I will have already vetted all these people we're not We're Not Gonna when we bring the candidates to you on on the 30th we're going to know something about all of them we're going to have invited a lot of them we're not going to
have invited them if they have problems if they have contractual issues if they've had issues in the the people we're looking for as David has told you and I think I've said are people who are doing a great job where they are now if we have any reason to believe that's not the case then you're certain we're certainly going to share that with you that that I should have probably injected the word final background checks there because there's going to come a time where we may have talked to some people let's say we've talked to some board members or talked to some people in the community and that may be the week that the the candidates are not going to really be excited about us getting into their Community now if they've if it's not
their current Community they don't care but if it's their current Community unless they know they're going to be probably the loan finalists and then they're we're going to say we're going to have to we're going to have to talk to board members chamber members we're going to have to talk to parents or teachers principals about and they're going to at that point they know where they are in the process and they're going to say okay a lot of what David and I do is talk to service center directors talk to other educational leaders talk to other school board members talk to other people not in their current District so we don't disturb and look like well we're trying to we're trying to steal your superintendent okay thank you for the clarification yes sir part of
the background pressure consultants and you typically do that oh yeah at that stage but but when you get to your your serious candidates we do Financial background checks um you know I'm sure they're already this day and age we definitely do social media checks that wouldn't have been an issue you know a decade or two decades ago it's certainly important his bike says before we ever start the interviews we will have done preliminary uh reviews of all of the people so that uh we can talk to you with confidence about the candidates that you have January 30th if that works would be a big meeting preceded to that would be we would close the application period on January the 20th uh what does an application look like and in our case we don't use an
application form we use a resume a professional resume letter of interest because people can tell you more about themselves than you can ask on an application that we like to get and we like to see people's writing skills their ability to express themselves their presentational skills so we asked for professional resume and letter we would conclude receiving those January 20th which today is November the 8th which gives us meaning we'll start advertising if the board approves this probably next Monday which means we're open about 60 days which is good that gives everybody a couple months to decide if they would like to be a candidate well to get to that point we back up and David and I will propose to the extent the board wants this you those of you that have worked with
us before know we do gather Community input for you and we have a process that we've used for a number of years that's we think been well received and it's been copied by some other groups so we think maybe it works pretty well but we would come back to your District propose to do that on January 10th and meet with your senior staff spend a little time in the district that afternoon and then the next day be here all day meeting with members of your community and focus groups of about an hour and a half each how do we get focus groups well you've got another handout that I've you've got just a suggestion again this is suggestion proposal that um categories of individuals that we would suggest that the board of appoint to be
on the focus groups and I've lost my page yeah it went and it's going to wind up being 60 or 70 people probably closer to 70 people per group I'm sorry okay thank you and David and I like with them in groups of about 15 to 20. and we already have taken the Liberty to visit with Monica a little bit about how that might be set up if you approve of it then we would these individuals would be named by you over the next couple of weeks should identify who you want after Thanksgiving letters would go out inviting them to meet with David and I we do not need your presence in fact I we give you a report that evening but we don't we don't encourage the board members to sit in on these
just let people just talk generally it's going to be very positive and people are going to be fine we also talk a little bit with Monica and about the fact that there's a letter to go out inviting them she has a copy of that letter you can Karen it's to be signed by the board president you can change it modify it edit it however you want to but it gives you kind of an invitation letter with times that they can come and meet and we ask that we really diversify the degree don't put all the teachers in one group don't put all the parents in one group don't put all the uh non-parents and mix them up get a good mix of people so there's a rich dialogue Rich conversation that's going on about the
district uh we Dave and I have some questions we run we run through them we get them to talk and again those of you that are familiar with it know they usually come out of there saying hey we all got to we all got to talk we usually get them to talk and answer our questions it's it's a guided conversation um a following day we will work with your your technology people to put those questions on your website so they need people who don't get aren't in the focus group say hey I would have liked to have I would like to contribute to that I didn't get I would like to say what I think and what I think the board ought to be thinking about and we should and we those should be left
up for a week okay those should be left up for seven days to let anybody that wants to contribute that way so that way we have some face-to-face meetings with some opinion leaders that you've identified and we also have input from people in the community who say I'd like to express my opinion about is going out um but that those are a couple of days that that we would propose to do that you don't really have a commitment there unless and if you're available that evening to meet with us that evening for about an hour we will give you a verbal report we will not have a written report prepared by then but we would have a verbal report to tell you what we've heard that day I'll let you hear the flavor of the
conversations and what people had to say so if all that's to be accomplished then we back up to um if you would like for us to be back here in early December I don't know that we have an agenda for you right now but if you thought it would be helpful for us to be we David and I have programmed December the 5th as a day we could be back y'all can talk about that see whether you think that would be helpful if you think it would um that we we're happy to but we're not we're not looking for you just say let's just have a meeting for the so y'all can meet but if you think it would be helpful then we've we've saved that I'll I'll back up to the uh before you
leave that so as we go forward with this I'm looking at you're going to review what we're going to do before then what day would you want to know that whether we wanted you to have a conversation with us on the fifth like we could tell you thanks by Thanksgiving I mean I don't know how it seems okay I'm thinking that I'm I'm already we're holding the dates and then if you decide you don't need and and before we go forward too is you're looking through that um Brian is Dr Woods is telling me that you know maybe Mondays aren't the best um around here for everybody and some people here have um other jobs and sometimes Monday is truly not a not a great day so if we could change some of those Mondays
to Tuesdays if that would be okay with the board um January 30th I brought my calendar that would be the livestock we need to the day after when we're moving okay um well let's do uh we could do the 31st third 31st all right let's see David uh wait a minute David you and I are and that would be a Tuesday right thinking does anybody have a problem on 31st let me get that date first third first work and it works in the evening yeah January 31st the evening so we're going to make it come on we're gonna make these things let's back up to December December 5th not a good day we need to do you want to I think uh I don't know that it's not a um you said money Monday's not
a good Mondays are not yeah if we could change like there's some on the second page too that are Mondays we could continue to go through that let me say this about the Mondays I'm sorry um I just thought maybe Dr Woods has suggested that and I think you know for some of us Mondays may not be a good day at your office right whatever y'all can be available for it's in general I think people have some challenges on Mondays when they go back to work but y'all with jobs um if we had to start like at four on Tuesday before a board meeting we wouldn't do it for a Tuesday but my Mondays have always been great I don't think you would put this on the nine of a record no no we wouldn't
which is your regular meeting on the sixth well why don't we go through these days after after he explains what we what we're doing and then maybe go through the dance fact I'll finish this up real quickly sure we will be mailing out invitations to school if this goes we'll be mailing out invitations to school leaders for nominations and invitations November 28th and that's uh the money after Thanksgiving yeah yeah I know uh this was just again suggestions I'm just uh what I would say about the the reason after the 28th is I think if we get letters started before Thanksgiving people we're just gonna right so they'll go out there thanks if the advertisements for the position will start next week probably next Monday uh and as David just noted to me that we
have November 14th this meet we will meet with you today we'll meet with you today it's because so but I'm going to edit that we're going to edit this calendar is what's happening but that's that's kind of kind of what uh timeline and you can see to meet us meet a schedule that would allow you to get a superintendent named after spring break that's pretty well where you have to it's kind of like setting a school calendar once you decide you're going to take certain days for holidays and take Thanksgiving Christmas and Easter and some of those days you pretty well gotta back yourself into a school calendar uh let me say this about Monday the month only Mondays that where I have some Mondays for you like which says interviews first round second round
we're just saying well let me say this about interviews when you get and you'll well when you start interviewing you don't want to interview say one on Monday skip Tuesday a couple on Wednesday then one on Thursday and Skip Friday a couple long you want to have two on Tuesday two on Wednesday two on Thursday or three at two you can do three in a day it gets a little tiring uh if you spend two to two and a half hours if you're really gonna and then this is this is going to be some and I think David and I will also provide you a battery of questions about a hundred questions in all types of leadership Administration Personnel curriculum instruction testing accountability community relations board superintendent relationships so you can use them or throw
them away but you will have a guide that you can so when you get ready to do an examination of the candidates if you want to know well what are some things we need to be sure we talk about we'll have that but the first first round of interviews and this is going to be your your challenge about impression is soon as possible get those dates reserved y'all are busy people you got things going on my our recommendation would be consecutive days so so you're not sitting there saying what did that one say on Monday that we did now it's Thursday what what did the one say three or four if you've got it pretty sequence Tuesday Wednesday Thursday I know the last time we did this on a Saturday which we did several on
Saturday yeah makes a long day but if you want to do it that way it's fine but it is we we've had boards say we're going to do two on Friday and we're going to do four on Saturday and they are pretty worn out by Yeah by that but that helped with the ones though that didn't I mean I remember when we brought people in back through the back door I mean yeah we'll take care of all the confidentiality and security but you're right it it's as far as if you're going to do the interviews here then you know if that's where you all decide you want to interview then you have to interview the candidates some at a location in the school district but you can do it here you can do it elsewhere
that's you got time to think about it my only thing is for for your part as we get closer yeah I wouldn't wait too next time y'all are together I'd have people with their counters and I'd say what are the consecutive days we want to do this Friday Saturday or Thursday Friday Saturday or Wednesday Thursday Friday what is it so you get the following week do bring say you interview six six people and you bring two back you only you you need two in the second round we usually suggest I think y'all have done this that you do a informal dinner about six with the candidate and spouse for about an hour and then excuse the spouse and then spend another two two and a half hours with the candidate and that kind of gives
you a feel for um and that we did on a Saturday too we did a lunch you can do that you can do them on do them on Saturday but Madam president I just say the big challenge for you is to get those kind of Mondays you don't have to do any of those on Mondays you don't have to do it you can do them whatever days you want to do them on the only other Monday I see on here the 31st we've moved off the 30th to the 31st right the only other Monday I see on here is December the 5th we can move I don't I think I'm tied up I'm not either you want to come over here but I'm on the sixth I'm shot on the sixth but I don't know
that we're gonna need I don't know that we need to visit with you at that time either so I did not I didn't I didn't think that we would well there's I mean we need to we'll need to meet yeah we'll need to meet we're going to need to figure out the questions the questions that we want for the focus groups as well how you do your profile I mean I just think there's some things coming up how is everybody's schedule on the on the 5th well they're not trying no he wasn't fine on the fit I'm good oh I'm good but I mean I'm good on the fifth too I'm not good on the sixth okay oh sure Dr Harrell so this is about the process um um on the focus group categories are
there ones that involve like um a separate group with possibly some of our volunteers like PTA you can include any of those what about existing committees like bar or Bond or anyic or Shaq any of those two since they're already meeting maybe maximize the time since there are or maybe they're part of the volunteer group that you know they're giving up time to serve our district and I'm hoping There's an opportunity to ask them those kind of questions too they can certainly respond here's the question I think you have to ask yourself and we'll do whatever you want to do if you start pulling up this committee this committee and this committee do you leave anybody out I I would suggest and just a suggestion again is whoever some of those individuals are some of
them are probably going to be parents some of them are probably going to be non-parent taxpayers some of them are probably going to be business people some of them are probably going to be fit in one of these categories I would nominate them to debate with these groups if you say we won't if you tell us you'd like us try to meet with one of the modern Steering group or something like that we'll do that the question is should they be hearing from the other people though too that I don't know I just I the people I really really choose to be on these things I hate to ask them to do one more thing even though this is important they're already coming to monthly or every six week meeting so I was just trying
to maximize their time in and know what is their cross-section of groups too except they don't include students necessary but anyway just I mean I heard your opinion sorry well it's it's it's probably not a perfect way to do it but I I would say this people that you dominate if we give them enough notice and Monica and I talked about getting those letters out the first the week right after Thanksgiving and giving them they view superintendent selection is pretty important and I bet they're going to come you know but if y'all come up with a different idea you want us to think about doing something else I this is again with a lot of districts we've served there's no nothing perfect this this works fairly well and it gets a lot of people that
have touched the district in a lot of different places have something else you want us to think about because just asking a question okay sure okay um Mr blunt how did you get oh okay no Melissa before me no no you were Bob okay I've lost track of Lights I'm sorry okay mine just a couple quick ones on the uh the letter on November 28th that does that also identify the dates in February so the candidates are aware hey look this is the window you need to leave open for the interviews that's a good point but what probably do and we might in the advertisements we may do that but we'll try to make sure that they are the windows that we're working okay again thanks to y'all's reputation most people yeah but it's a
good it's a good observation and so either through the letter or through the advertisement we'll try to get the dates on there okay and the other one I had more friends I think we just hit on a little bit I think Melissa touched on it in terms of yeah we will need and we can do it on December 5th but that time to figure out what questions we're going to ask or in that particular line separate even from the panels okay we provide us 100 how we're going to filter that down questions we like to ask the foreign that's what I'm talking about yeah and then if you want to talk about if we come back and meet and you want to talk about desired characteristics profile type things then we will be all ears
okay but we may want to okay if we want to use December 5th for that or something but we'll need time to do that so good point so the the board has an idea about a profile too and there is no opportunity that's really on the fifth okay okay talk to us good okay that'll work depending how crowd the fifth gets I don't know if you want to look at January date also for a call meeting for us to discuss what questions we want to ask for the record let me tell you that took us a while for the candidates yeah for the candidate that's probably January the 30th is that the 30th okay that's what that's called okay okay once you've establish who you can't do the people off we will work through the
interview protocols with you okay okay this will be through those 100 questions okay good sections yeah each of you category but it it flows if you just trust us a little bit we'll make sure it flows for you and maybe you could have those in front yeah or ahead of that so at least a day or two ahead see those questions and be um deciding whether you want to edit them modify them or whether okay perfect all right then the last one I had and I know we get a lot of different focus group categories but we may want to also consider universities just because of that very tight partnership and interactions we have with UTSA that may be of value yeah number nine number nine is your catch-all number nine is you can have
an elected official or any immune leader but you you want that to be a university person I think we go you one better if you want to add a 10th area there and put University person I think just because of that yeah I was sort of building a closer I added too oh okay all right I'm done Mr Lopez no that was mine that was good okay obviously we're meeting tonight posting on the 14th obviously there's no board action necessary there starting on the 28th not even gonna that's that the 14th is the highest right now it's just yeah the uh I'm sorry the what's listed is the 15th actually becomes the 14th which is a Monday which is the posting of the advertisement yeah right we're having all that on November 28th is the
Monday after thank you think of letters out to the focus group nominees which which sets for the board a pretty clear timeline to get us feedback on who you want foreign deadlines uh on that so um if we could look at that just Mike I apologize all right fine internally a week from Friday so you've got 10 days so nominee nominations need to be to Monica by the 18th okay of November's an email address right and I and I suspect some of us are going to overlap um and so I would I would say just put people down who you think um ought to be on the list and then um if there's a if we have to narrow we can try to do that but put people that you feel that um should be
on the in the focus group right I'm sorry that we're gonna nominate them that we are putting their name in for a focus group for the superintendent search or you may or may not you don't have to share but yeah can I do that with uh someone they go well how often how long when I mean people are just so logistic driven because of family so I'm wondering if we have something yeah it's January 11th and they'll have the difference and they may end up with more people in one for it looks like this so it'll be about an hour and a half but we don't know morning noon or okay so the only unknown then would be what day yeah what time yeah and we've told Monica Brown this if somebody says Hey Y'all
asked me to be there at 8 30 that morning I can't make it okay I know the deal is we're not trying to keep people out trying to keep people in it so we'll work with them now other than that is Monica try not to make us wind up with groups of more than about 20. you know we have 15 to 20 people in each group and that's going to be that we want everybody to get a chance to talk sure and and so that's that they come to the meeting they say I get taught and David and I do kind of we if somebody drones on and on and on we kind of nicely move to the next person for students what's that I would love that there's a student in each focus group
so that would be an excuse that students are students are great we'll take you to the extensive I mean with seven of us nominating I'm sure Carol that's 14. communities here in the south in a relationship s okay the administration is always great so to recap the date that we have to have those names in our okay November 18th y'all have that Monica I think you're just gonna need to send a couple of texts that week we are not always the best about getting our names to you this is an absolute deadline absolutely and courtesy your courtesy is the more advanced notice you give the gift and it's just and it as y'all were saying people are busy they got counters if they get this on their counter they're likely to participate we don't want
to send this out after the first of the year and then say hey we're having a meeting in about 10 days but if we the sooner we do it we can see if we if a lot of us have given the same people and so that gives us more time to yeah president and and Brian Monica need to look at duplicates if you have a duplicate then y'all can look at you also probably need to make sure that your district is geographically it's about represented it's good representation and it and and you'll know you'll be and if you need to add a I don't know where Melissa's 11th the first category is going to be we're kind of try to save a couple so if you say we need to add managers that's not going
to throw us off or somebody comes out let's add 10 or 15 more people then you're you're limiting the time people and that's what you have to think about but anyway okay and so as we were going down the the dates um talked about the focus groups the application deadline um the search on the January 30th we changed the 31st yeah Karen I'm not I've got some some oh I'm sorry okay the focus groups if the board's going to meet with these gentlemen in here or in the evening we need to check to see if that worked so that if we conduct the focus groups that day was that a Wednesday it's a Wednesday to Wednesday yes this group I wanted orals anything we say to be you're going to be getting in writing with
Victor I think it'd be good just to have just to have that and so if we can all agree on that um right and and Melissa back uh you had more yeah I've got a couple of things um okay so I added volunteers and universities those are two other cop two other categories Mike okay um because I agree Carol with uh um as to using a current committee I I wouldn't want to do that Carol just because there may be some people on that committee that I wouldn't necessarily want to be the people on the focus group whereas the ones that I want from some of those committees you know we'll have to make the effort if they want if they want to be a be a part of that but there's some that I
I wouldn't particularly say would be you know who I would want like Shaq has a lot of staff on it and that may not necessarily be the committee that I would want you know to have so I like this piece and I think that with all of us naming students and um and there may be some that have a couple of people within this but I think we'll try to try to keep it to that but I do want us to add the volunteer piece which may not all necessarily because like a non-tax payer parent there's one that may not necessarily be a volunteer of the district and I would like to have their feedback of how does a senior out in our community feel in relation to the expectation of the superintendent um you
need to get a cross-section that U.S board will get all of that information so it gives you a Revival I mean we're going to have conversations about what you would afford to have identified as priorities and what you think you're taking care check that with your community to Simply give you a really valid here's the scenes of which my guess there's going to be a lot of a lot of errands you're probably not going to hear a lot from y'all are very much in touch with your community that it gives you that is just a good valid premium to kind of guide you in your conversations and we're always comfortable to tell the focus groups they're not picking the superintendent they're providing in and something let me ask um because I can't remember before when
we did this if we had any input into kind of what you asked them or what questions you asked because I do have what is a little different from what we have done in the past is that the current just it the the current societal issues are feeling about public Ed we have not been what's the word I'm trying to find we we've you know we have been um we've had God my my word left anyway you know we have had those kind of discussions with people in our community and then we've had discussions with are not even discussions just were shouted at by people that have nothing to do with our community so I guess what I'm saying is we are not oblivious to the other issues in our society in public Ed and
so I I just want to understand because you're going to have people in the community talk about we want someone that doesn't support critical race Theory we want someone that doesn't you know but but I guess Mike what I want to make sure is that we hear that so that that this needs to be truly be a cross-section of our community if we have groups out there we we need to hear because what we're hearing right now is just that little tiny voice you know so like that's what I'm asking is I just want to make sure that y'all will do that it will depend on you as board members for this if you have some critics or give some concerned people you want to be part of the conversation you're afraid to nominate them
and and we'd much rather have them in you know in the LBJ phrase we'd rather have them inside the team to the downside of the team and I won't fit I just think that it's it's just different yeah yeah I force people substitute but it's it's that if they are open-ended enough to where if somebody says here's my concern my concern is growth or growing or critical race Theory or whatever and then what you're going to get very you know over the course of a day or actually a day and if you're going to get hundreds of comments and then what we do is we go through and analyze all of those and put organically emerges are about three to five themes sure you're going to see some cobians that recur over and over and
over during the day across different groups those are particularly the ones that we're going to call your attention to as Porter members and then you're going to see the one-off cover person by the cup that it didn't get picked up or repeated in other groups but but you will what naturally emerges from these fairly long conversations is our themes and that's really what we're trying to draw out over the course of the focus groups and y'all y'all did a really good job with those on that before I just Mike it's just a little different than what it what it was criticism is not an issue for you know we're concerns oh it's not that wasn't and that wasn't a criticism that's just high stakes issues you're talking about library books critical race Theory um earned
lifestyle whatever maybe that's going to come up I'm just going to tell you it's going to come up people are going to voice their opinion about it and we're not gonna we're gonna listen but the others in the room are going to be listening and that's where the richness of the conversation comes in because some people go we've gone where they failed a bond issue everybody's mad they got in there they got talking to each other folks groups they found out why that bond issue failed and what was done we want them to walk out of that those and tell y'all we hope they'll tell you later that was valuable that was valuable for us to have that that give and take we're not going to shy away from the tough subjects if they want
to talk about them they bring them up now if somebody just goes on and on and on and they start monopolizing no diplomatic skills will get used in anyway well I hope that helps it does it does and I have great faith in in you and David um I do have a question though on one group that you're looking at and that's November 28th and it kind of ties into this discussion I mean you all know our community or have a good feel I think you have a good feel of our community like to think we do you know and um so you're going to be asking leading University professors of educational Administration there is a broad spectrum of what leading University professors of educational Administration believe in so just I guess what I'm just
asking is you know or have a good feel of what our community is please don't it's nominations only we're not asking them they're not it's just if you've got somebody you want to nominate that we need to be that you they may nominate who's on your right they may nominate a superintendent up here and um Austin or Houston area it's somebody and and the truth of it is there aren't that many people that and that from universities that you hear from we are more likely to hear from Consortium groups Education Service Centers yeah City superintendents school board members but if someone nominates somebody you know we'll look at them but no they don't guide the they don't guide the I I hear what you're saying I guess and part of it too is that um
the environment we're in now is people just look for they look at the minutia on a lot of things and you know I just want us to be aware that that something that is different from from you know what we have done in in the past so Dr Harrell I think you had you know that from before Miss Saldana yes I just need clarification on the focus groups we're each supposed to nominate one person or several several several nominated persons no each but that's what I'm what I need clarification on the parent do I nominate one parent or do I nominate five or six parents one business person okay one faith-based person I just I just wanted to make sure that nominating two parents okay but but the better the better committees will come about
if you can stay as close to those categories as possible because then that would be seven parents only that would be nominated total it's going to open people I'm I may not I I may not know somebody in one category so you just you just have to the people that you feel that are really important but it's one per category okay all right I just don't know somebody in this category no no way well yeah yeah I was before somebody make it or I know okay any I think we're done with questions to that we've got our dates selected okay yes sir weird as I we've talked we do keep up with people who have served in Texas and public schools who have left our state there are out of state candidates that are worthy
I think the majority of your candidates will come in state but I think there may be that rising star superstar out there to that extent I think we suggested in the timeline that we educate but that we advertise this in educational we experience not that expensive uh fifteen hundred dollars maybe something like that but the advertising at the national level at the aasa education week I think would be appropriate for your District given your size and giving your stature to to have that average will there will be some top-notch uh out of state before I either they're aware of it okay with that that's what really um any any comments or objections to any of that Miss Charlie no I I had something I just had one more question um when you all meet with
senior staff I guess perfectly what's working what are you happy what do you think's really working what's your what are you really believe what would you want someone to come in here and not mess up what would you thought what would you think someone need what do you think and I usually we go around and say what areas do you supervise what's the biggest challenge you're facing in those areas today what keeps you and don't be offended if a new superintendent walks in and says tell me what you're doing in this area because the only way I knew superintendent is going to learn about the areas you work in is how ask questions about what we're doing and maybe even why are we doing it yeah most of the time when I ask those questions
I bet Brian does I'm pretty satisfied with the answers but every now and then I need to dip I need to dig in a little bit and say is that a good reason for us to be doing this or is it do I need it's a learning process for and how do you learn you learn by asking questions and I just tell Dave and I tell them don't get offended by a new leader asking questions that's how they're going to learn about you and your District in the district so we do a little we do just we want to hear from them and then we try to do prepare the real focus is as Mike said is what's working well what are you proud of in your area what do you want for your new
superintendent to know is working and then what keeps you up at night what's on your radar in your area that is going to need some attention in the next two three four years and see um reason I asked because I really like that y'all are asking those questions and having that discussion and I would like when you meet with us on the 11th to kind of have a synopsis of what that discussion was too I I think that that yeah the letter yes right we share with you what we heard from the folks groups but we share with well what we put Senior staff had to say unless it needs to be protected under executive session specific individuals and I just think that would be good for us to know too for which could come
into when we're looking at these candidates we just tell we try to we want to hear what they have to say and it'll largely you know it'll largely be positive but I think it's important for them to be prepared to know that a new person is going to ask it's not to be you don't have to be offended by that in fact you should be encouraged that that's how they're they're learning about the district Matt and chairman what else could we do this I think Mr blunt as I said we answer did we officially answered a question uh I've definitely for the national search yeah no I'm good sure too so yeah the Nationals I mean I'm okay with that so I'm just kind of curious when we look at people from other states are
they coming with some some some you know kind of similar understanding and understanding of Texas Education um because to me the way I see it is is when if I'm coming from New Mexico right I'm going to say hey Texas is a whole different ball game uh they play differently uh the amount of time that it's going to take for that person to acclimate to just even the Texas weather right but more so the education so you know that kind of concerns me what is your experience on that and and I know I'm I like looking out outside but what has been your experience when you say hey what has been the learning rate the learning curve you know is that typical what's a typical you're absolutely correct here's the thing the state's accountability system
the state school finances or unlock anybody else's we could probably say that about any other state as well but if you come to Texas you better have done your homework on accountability and you better have done your homework on school Finance because the questions we're going to give to you to propose to candidates are going to demand that they be able to talk intelligently about those subjects that is ultimately for you sis when you look at the pool of candidates the first thing is do we have a pool of people do we like this pool is there someone from out of state that has such skill such talent the district is 80 000 students High performing nationally recognized that it demands us to consider if you see that that person emerges in the pool great
if you don't see that there may it may not even be relevant but there is no doubt that people who now again we talk about people who have been in Texas served as a deputy superintendent I'm thinking of one that served a deputy superintendent one of our state's largest District that's left and would like to come back to Texas well they have some they have they have a pretty good knowledge and basis of understanding of our state's assessment system our accountability system our school Finance system our our system of personnel and so forth so but each of those when we share all the candidates with you'll evaluate those I would say it takes a special person to merge if they're out of state but I don't I don't think you should ever really rule them
out just like I would say you should never rule out a rising star I know a school district in West Texas that hired a guiders three years old to be the superintendent and I wouldn't hire a 33 year old person to be my superintendent for anything yeah so but you you you will assess we're we're what are we looking for where does this match where does this fit we just want to provide you best pool possible for you to consider and say here's some here's some really outstanding people that'll bring the energy the enthusiasm this District that Brian has has embodied and take us to the next level about that yeah well thank you appreciate it thank you this person have an interest in I'm looking at all these they don't necessarily have to live
in North side or have a North Side kiddo but has a have a special interest in North Side the superintendent Academy no no any of these things oh yeah we are looking like if you saw a special person I was thinking sorry you've got someone that has a business in this District that is very involved in the schools and has takes an interest if you want to point them someone who works with our schools yeah like communities if they don't live here but they are here but they like they are north side and we're not going to keep going up okay so they're going to have to be connected okay that's ridiculous we're going to respect whoever you informed okay catch no I'm okay I actually got a ride so real quick just look at
the the so the dates well just have to keep up to the up to the interviews are we okay um the 31st yeah Melissa yeah that was still okay yeah I'm good on the 31st okay and December 5th and I think I think that's a good I think we just need to do that so we could talk about the board's profile okay okay let me say again uh David I think Brian and Monica have our phone numbers have our contact information um and I know the board chairman has it uh but you know we want this this is going to be the most important thing we'll be doing and we realize how important it is to you I know David and I both do so we're we thank you again for uh your trust and
this time to come out thank you very much appreciate you thank you unless there's any objection um this meeting is adjourned the board ends its meeting at 506. p.m on November 8 2022
