001All right, let's call this meeting to order. Uh, thank you all for coming. Um, we have a quorum and uh, we'll all stand and uh, say the pledge of allegiance. >> Alison, Alison's back. Alison, his kiddos. >> Okay. >> All three of y'all. Let's go. >> Got four of them. Hey, right after we're going to take pictures of the stage. Don't go too far. >> You ready? Wait on your friend. >> Okay. To the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> You'll come here. >> Parents, you can come up and take pictures real quick. >> They're not going to do the Texas pledge. We're all good. They they they will start they will start to
002do it automatically. So, >> okay, we're going to start with our first grade awesome eagle, Riley Kirchoff. Riley, >> you set that kid on supervised. >> All right, come on. >> Next awesome eagle was Alison R. Man, she's so cute. >> Okay, our fourth grade Austin Eagle fans, >> smile. All right, Paisley. Eric might have matching boots on >> Eric. I can. >> Okay, let's squeeze in. >> She's our She's our special. >> Hang on. Our second grader just walked in. Come here. >> Come on. Come here. >> Come over here to this. >> And our second grade awesome eagle is Santiago. >> All right. Okay. >> Oh, perfect. Okay, >> you can all be seated. Thank you. I should have said that before he took pictures. I just >> stand >> everybody stand right
003there and wait. >> I appreciate so many of you coming out on the holiday. Thank you so much. >> The next group we'd like to recognize tonight would be our uh those that came FFA group with Mr. Micah Davidson. Good evening everybody. Um, thanks for inviting us to be here tonight. Um, Mr. Wack asked me to come and just uh, invite kids to kind of recap our call. Uh, we do leadership development event call. So those are um, events to enhance their leadership skills. So speaking, critical thinking, um, there's a a lot of others that go into that as well. We had a really successful fall. We advanced seven area contest. Um there's 15 teams you can train in the fall. So we were really proud of that. Um of those we're going to recognize
004the ones that that qualified for the area contest tonight. Um and so you six that are here. Uh if you're on the team, go ahead and come up here uh when I get to yours. So um we had the district champion a advocacy team. Uh that was Cassidy Dowy, uh JC Thomas, uh Zelanis, and Grace Shelurn. Um they advanced the area contest. And then we had the district champion senior chapter conducting teams. Um that was Kayen Jenkins, Grayson Clement, Hunter Van. Um we had also on that team, Abby Nolles, Josie Gleven, Taylor Coffin, um Cody New, Kylie Sherman, and Tyler Bose. Um so they advanced the area contest. Um agricultural issues. They were second in the district contest. Um and that team was Abby, Christian Carter, uh Brock Bird, um Keegan Bridges, and Tinsley Eric.
005Um they ended up placing third area and were like one spot away from going to the big four points was the difference between third and second. We'll get them next year. >> Um then in Green Creek, we have Kayie Blevens. She ended up in the top five at area. She was um second at district and then fifth um at the area contest. So um that's we're proud of Kaylee on that one. Then on we had the district runner up green quiz team that was Addie Ward, Jorge Garcia, Landry Slover um and Brooklyn um from Um there we have green Spanish creed um which was Jennifer Hernandez. She was second at the district contest in advance area. And then last but not least for sure um Kender was second at the district contest went on to
006win the area. Um he got to go to the state contest in Huntsville. Um hang one picture and then if you could break down what we just did on I just put all the stuff on the marquee that you sent today. Get in there, Mr. Davidson. >> Smile like you like each other. just kind of reference on that too. Within our within our area, there's 121 FFA chapters. So, um if you make it to the area contest, you're in the top 14 of those 121. Uh so, getting there is a really big deal. Um in the state level for Kendra, she was in the top 24 out of 1,200. So, uh that's a that's a big deal. Then today we had the opportunity to host the district speaking contest. Uh ours is really early. So
007area is actually not until May. Um for us we hosted it. We had uh 18 uh students participate 18 times today and of those like we can only we can only advance nine. Uh and we advanced five out of the nine spots that we were able to fill. So um with that um Grayson Clement was the district champion today. I can remember all of these, but um Happy Nolles was she had quite a day. She was first um in plant science. Um she was first in exempraneous speaking and then she was second in school so stewardship and advanced in all three of those. Um with that Jason Thomas won her division. Um I could go through all the through all of them but it was a really great day. very proud of all those students
008uh that that have done that. It's they would have to present a six to eight minute speech and so fully fully memorized and be able to answer questions about that topic. Um so thank you all so >> good good job Mr. Good job. >> And I have Mr. Wter to come up. He's got a couple of students that we'd like to recognize from our band program. Okay. Um, so the the way the band uh works for the, you know, a little bit of December, a little bit of January, uh, is we start off with our all region auditions. Uh, there's 493 students that tried it out for the all region bands. Uh, that's just for our our little region area. Um, and, uh, Lance and Sean Brown both made that out of the 493 students.
009So, they made all region. >> Uh, because of their placement at the region level, they both advanced to the area level. Um, and then from there, Sean placed eighth on tuba out of all the tubas that were auditioning. And then Lance placed first amongst all the French horns that were there. And Lance has earned himself a spot in the All State ATSSB, uh, uh, band, which will be happening in February. >> And so, um, only 3% of all students, uh, across the state make the all state band. So, uh, take a hang with him. >> Thank you. Great job, boys. >> All right. Thank you. >> Also for the school board, u the uh middle school band 6 through 8 and the high school bands 9 through 12 have sent a thank you letter for
010all that y'all do >> to honor us. And so >> thank you, sir. >> We'd like to acknowledge some staff members now. John Milmo, if you'll come up and introduce your teacher this last six weeks she's here, I'd appreciate that. >> Yes, we have Miss Brett was our teacher this six weeks and >> she's done a great job working with our students. She even works with our newcomer students, students that are learning English for the first time. She does a great job and really seeks out resources to help. >> All right, we're gonna take a picture real fast. >> Yeah, it's okay. It's okay. It's a holiday. It's okay, >> Jesse. >> And it's fun to see some of my former students. They're so grown up. >> Yeah. Well, they'll get a selfie before y'all
011leave in a second. It'll be awesome. >> Y'all get a selfie before you leave with all of them. >> That would be awesome. Mr. Newton. >> All right, it's time for the Eagles and Above Beyond awards for the fall semester. Uh we do this twice a year, uh fall and spring. Uh we get input from teaching faculty community and take applications and nominations for people for those who literally have gone above and beyond and made our school community a better place. And uh so the first one of these is going to go to Brandon Heisler. Congratulations. >> Brandon Brandon does a tremendous job on our maintenance team. This is his second goound with LUISD and he just makes a he's just he's got a positive attitude. does whatever you ask him. Does whatever you don't
012ask him to do in a good way. >> Sometimes. Sometimes. >> Good job, Brandon. >> Coach Frick. Gabby Frick. >> Hey, this is Coach Rick's first year at Valley View. um clearly is making a tremendous impact and um just got uh quite a few nominations and they all pretty much summed up the same thing about all the people who appreciative of what he's doing especially with the younger kids in athletics specifically cross country and just what a positive influence and how he's got a lot of the kids excited to be there and they just so thrilled to have him here. There's nobody else I'm forgetting out here because we just started doing all this. We got everybody tonight. All right, we're going to take a five minute break just so if you don't want to
013stay for the real board meeting, we can go. Teenagers, >> interesting as it is. Those of you that want to stay >> so much for stepping up to do that. >> I'm Christy here. I'm Will's mom on your JBT. Your new JB. >> That's right. >> Hey, you know what? At the last game, they at least felt like they were having a ball and >> at least everybody was into it and they were trying that gave me heart competition. I had to walk out. I was like, I can't take all this excitement. >> Oh, yeah. >> I he was I was like, >> oh yeah, there >> you did. You are excited about it. That's all you can ask for is everything. So, yeah. know you've done a great job. >> Yeah, absolutely. I agree.
014>> They are willing. I was like really? He was like yeah like like forever or just today and he's like I don't know forever. >> I love it. >> Well, thank you so much. I I know you've stepped up in a lot of different ways and we appreciate it. >> Of course. Absolutely. You guys have a good night. >> You too. But I do have some car. >> That would be amazing. >> Thank you. I appreciate y'all very much. Yes, sir. >> Good to see you. See you. Thank you. Yeah, thank you. >> There there's a giant like >> you're Chinatown. stay like right. >> He made me do it. >> Yeah, they're all there. >> And they wet their lives. >> They wet their brakes. Just so that way >> she said no. >>
015Yeah, we were want >> and I've got a sweet tooth. >> The sweetest taste. I'm making bread. I'm going to make her bread. I'm going to try and make her bread. >> Interesting. Yes. I already took a picture and sent it to her and I was like and she was like, "Okay, >> go help her." >> Seriously. >> All right. >> She sent me the recipe. All right. >> Not I was surprised. >> Two minute warning, Mr. >> Van. Hey. Hey. Did Jennifer Chris, where' Jennifer go? >> Where' Jennifer go? >> She said I Hey kid. >> Hey, will you do me a solid? >> Wow. >> She wants a Dr. Pepper. She wants a Dr. Pepper. No, she's about to go get something. >> Coke zero. >> Dr. Pepper zero. >> Coke zero. >>
016Why are there flies in January is my question. >> We do too. And Bobby was like there should not be flies in January. >> Oh, he did. I didn't even know. >> Every time I get off the disappears. I'll take that. >> Thank you. You bet. >> I love flies. >> Oh, we can't >> can't keep the flies out. >> Nice. These kids do these things right here. No. >> This is the difference in between really good leadership. >> Oh yeah. I agree. I like him a lot. >> Just, you know, I mean, just the what he's done. Both those kids that that just both those kids that got those award, did you see anymore? They they you can't they'll hide in here and they'll hang out and they'll dodge the freeze and then they'll
017go outside when it's warm. They ain't dumb. >> They're they're I don't know. >> Winter home. >> We have built them a very nice winter home. >> Yes. >> You know those those uh those both those kids that that got those awards, both those kids could march in college if they wanted to. >> Is Lance going for marching? Do we know? >> He's going through music. I know that he's got an interview somewhere down at Austin. Somewhere out in Boston and >> yeah, Boston is where he wants to go. >> I've heard Boston College, too. >> Boston. >> That may be where I just knew somewhere down towards that way. >> I don't know. Boston Boston. Uh not a big marching band. >> I just I just know he's interview. >> All right. So, uh,
018we don't have anybody lined up to to speak. >> No, there's no public speaker. >> No public speaker. We're not on, uh, >> you're not speaking, Jim. >> Did you speak? >> All right. So, uh, Okay. So, uh, general comments. >> We'll go to consent agenda. >> Okay. So, we're going to consent agenda in your in your folders. You have the minutes from the last board meeting. They should be right behind this agenda. And then anything y'all need to anything from the bills that were the financials that were on that are on those iPads in front of you. >> Yep. >> No, I asked my question. >> Christy Christy did her homework. She reached out before the meeting. I was proud of her. >> I asked that year and he said it's just one time.
019>> Well, for the contract. It's a three-year contract. This is one time. >> So, every three years? >> No, it pays for three years of service. >> Yes, it's every three years. Charlie. >> Gotcha. >> I thought it was for the rest of our lives, but apparently not. >> No, it's not. >> I move that the VBSD school board approve the consent agenda as presented. >> We have a a motion by Kathy to approve the consent agenda. Do we have a second? >> Second by Chris. >> All in favor of approving the consent agenda, please say I. >> All right. Motion passes. >> Okay. We're going to forgo uh administrative reports because of close session. You'll speak with them in close session regarding personnel in just a minute. So, we'll go down to uh principal's
020report. Uh want to talk about attendance enrollment real fast. Enrollment as of Friday was 8.81. Uh elementary is up two students to 360. Uh Milmo's dropping a ball. Lost a kid to we're at 258. Lost at 258 and then we're up a kid in high school. So we stayed even in the secondary. So 881 um right now. Now that number's a little skewed because we have seniors who are halftime. We have 10 halftime seniors. So that's they if they were fully enrolled that number would be 8.86, but because they're halftime, they they they don't count as much. >> Are you getting a lot of uh applications for transfer? >> Uh I have some to consider. Yes, sir. I would say a handful at this point. >> Handful. Okay. >> Yep. for high school, elementary, >>
021all all district. >> Gotcha. >> But, uh, I had those. I got I came back from the semester. Just been really busy and I want to bet those. We're we're always going to bring in high class kids. >> They plug in. We're not just opening the doors to anybody. Only if they make us better do we allow them in to Valley View. Um, but it's something we need to consider uh with the future. You know, we need to make sure that we're being fiscally responsible for the district. Like I said, we're at 14% transfers. It's not uncommon for districts to be up to 30 and 40. I'm not saying we should go there, but we should be at that 20 that 20% window would help us offset some cost 20 21 >> uh healthy positive
022kids. >> That's what we were at back a few years ago. >> When when Cameron came in 17, it was 21%. >> Yeah. That's a healthy That's a healthy percent where you're not sh you're not compromising your culture >> and you're and you're changing kids to into the eagle eagle culture. So that's something that I we'll be having a constant conversation about as we move forward through the spring. >> Uh my goal is probably for us to be at 900. We're at 8819 kids over the spring. Gets us pretty solid for the >> 900 by the end of the school year. >> By the end of school year, that would be a healthy that would be a healthy strategic uh goal for us to select who we we bring in. >> Okay. >> Talk about
023selection. I will say this. >> There's word out there that we may have some turnover. Every district has turnover. People are already give sending letters of interest, not resumes, but letters of interest, high quality staff looking to come here. >> I'm so sorry. >> Uh, that's all right. Keep keep You know what? I don't get Yeah, I don't get sheared a whole lot. I don't get cheered a whole lot. So, appreciate that. But, no, we have we already have some viable candidate applications to all four of them. >> So, >> good. >> That's not the That's not the culture when I walk in the door. >> So, no, bring them bring them in and the be bring the best and bring the best kids. >> Yeah. Our tennis rates. Do you know the elementary tennis
024rate off? I know you have it. >> I do. >> 99.8 is what I have. I pulled it from a sender today. I'm gonna be >> just since we came back from our overall >> year to date. >> Yes. For the six weeks. >> For the six weeks. Six weeks. That's up >> with flu and all that going around. >> Let's just just starting to get >> dropped a little bit, but everybody else has pulled up. So, >> John, >> we're at 96%. >> 96. Chris, you know what? off the top of your head. >> Um, last time I looked maybe a week or two 95.4. >> Yeah, 95. >> We're we're tracking at 96% as a district that that computes that even though I don't have the I just had the cumulative those numbers
025add up. >> We're about 96. That's very healthy. Very healthy. >> So again, that's trending up from the 91% when I first got here. That was the average. >> No, absolutely. >> 91 nearly 92 to be gone. 91.7 or something. >> All right. And then uh budget, you know, we had the track happen. We invested in the Chromebooks. We're running a little bit behind on on the uh budget less than $100,000. Like we're tracking right now and I meet not next week. This is mid- winter weekend if I can get out of town with the snow. Ice, potential ice. Those are our drinks. She made a she made a run to the appropriate store. Known to boys. So anyway, long story short, uh it I'll meet with Tasbo for uh budget forecasting and cash flow
026for the remainder of the year when I get back the first week of February. So, next time we meet, we'll have a handle on on a real number as close as we can get. >> Thank you so much for doing that. >> Oh, thank you. >> Nope. She she she got the drinks coke zero or something. All right. Thank you, Jennifer. You're welcome. >> All right. And then that's all for unless you have questions. That's it for the the superintendent report. >> You have any questions? I >> think there's one more Dr. Pepper down there. >> Y >> I'll shake that one up. >> Who's Code Zero? >> That's Charlie's code zero. >> Okay. >> All right. Take that. Thank you. All right. So, >> I can't have it anymore. >> Me either. >> Any
027questions? >> Oh, no, no, no. I think that that's good. >> Okay. Uh, so we have one action item tonight. Jesse, can you talk about the procedure that we've gone through regarding this library list real fast? >> Yeah, so um the list that you got before you tonight for the elementary library book purchase. So based on is it house bill 12 or eight? I forgot >> 12 >> average you can call it 10. So now to go through the procurement anytime we are going to purchase something it's going to have a different ISB and it's got to get board approval. >> A new book. >> Yes. And it could be the same book, but if it's by a different publisher, has a different cover, it's going to have a different ISBN. Same thing with any
028donations that we get before we can put them in, they have to be approved. If there, as long as they're new ISBN, if we if we're going to replace the exact same ISBN, we can just do it. >> Um, so what we have to do is we have to then post it on our website. We have to have at least 30 days um to let the public know the list of the books and we also have a feedback form for any comments. So, we don't have any comments or anything based on this. They've been on there, in fact, over 60 days on our library page on the website. And trying to think what else I need to add. >> So, even if there's like someone donates books, >> yes, we can't put them in on
029the shelves until they until they get approved. >> Well, I'm going to say who picks these books out >> because you want to read creepy pair of underwear because I do. >> It seems who who does pick the books out. saw that >> it looks like >> well it's gone through the the aid at the library but it gets vetted by the librarian that we have through the service. >> So the librarians pick them out and it gets run through. >> Well I I I I want her accommodated for having one, two, three, four, five, six books related to honey. I like it. I'd have read those when I was a kid. I guarantee you that much. >> They've been updated. >> No, these are great. Here's here's a honey. >> That's how old they
030are. I want to read this book. Uh had a plane crash on Kodiak Island and they're pursued by a bear and they have to >> hunt the sac. >> They have to hunt the bear to live. I love it. I mean, if I'm a kid, that's a book report right there. So, >> lost deer camp. >> I'm serious. Hunting to let ghost. I love it. >> I had Jesse give youall the procedure because you as a board approved this policy that we went through to for this to come to you tonight. We're following board new board policy from House Bill 12. >> All right. So, >> when do we need that school board approve the adoption of library books as presented? >> Okay, we have a motion by by by Chris to approve the adoption
031of the new library books. >> Second by Christie. >> Okay, any discussion? Any questions? >> You know, I love library books. >> All right. All in favor of adoption of the library books, please say I. >> Anybody opposed? All right. We got some new books. >> Two information items. They should be stapled together. They're out of order, though. It should be You'll It'll look like this. It says SP11 on it. And then one behind it says update 72. I put them backwards on the agenda. My apologies. Uh this this update 72 is I sent this in an email to y'all so you have access to look at it. There are uh it says no action necessary, but I wanted you to know that there are updates to the TASBY policy. Uh I'm foreseeing that they
032send something, but the tutorial stuff is for you to access. I just wanted to have knowledge of this in case you see it on the next agenda as an action item. And then Senate Bill 11, this is daily prayer time. Here's the consensus from what's happening uh among the region as we've talked to superintendents and I have not spoken to the lawyer but what they're trying to do here is take time of the this Senate bill really takes time out of the instructional day to do prayer time we already offer prayer time every day we have a minute of silence after the pledges that is every is mandated and everybody has an opportunity to do this and it doesn't interfere with our instructional time and most I'm not here to make re recommendation. I'm just
033telling you what other people are saying at this time. I want you to educate yourselves. We'll talk. This will be an action item at the next board meeting. A lot of districts are not supporting Senate Bill 11. Uh because we have do have to take action as a board. Yay or nay versus this regarding this. Uh because we have to keep our instructional time sacred. And since I've walked in the door, that's what we've looked at. The bell-to-bell instruction uh time on task. And we already have this opportunity for kids anyway. And it doesn't matter what religion and this either this prayer time, but it's just it's about time. >> Let me ask you a question. >> Sure. >> Um I I get it. I know we give them a minute. They no matter what
034their religious affiliation is, they've got a minute to to pray or meditate or whatever they feel like doing. Um, what are the potential negatives locally of not adopting this? >> You could have people say that we're anti-faiths, >> anti-religious, >> it's anti but I'll be honest with you. I mean, if you really want to get to the crux of of most faiths, if if it's a Christianbased faith and it's about a relationship, it's not about religion. >> I mean, I'm just I'm not here to preach. I'm just saying if we split hairs is the state man asking for a certain amount of time >> they will mandate time. Uh they've not given the mandate on time. That's the thing that it's not clear. >> Yeah. So we adopt it and they say oh that time's
03545 minutes now. Well we >> I mean they could do that. >> Oh wow. >> And so that's the quandry a lot of us are in. We just don't have enough information to take action on this. I'm not saying that they won't give us more information next 30 days because every school board in the state has to take action on this in their March or February by March 1st. That would be our February board meeting. And so that's been the question. >> Has any any any boards taken action already? >> Not in the re not in region 11. They haven't because we've had this conversation at our uh >> so the action that we can take in February though is that the minute we offer after the pledge of allegiance is the time. >> Yep.
036We can we can stick to that for now unless something changes and we want to say, you know what, we're okay if it's a definitive amount of time to give that to that that opportunity. >> Well, essentially, we don't have enough information at this point to be able to >> to approve anything. The problem is >> well, and that's it. Then you just don't approve it. You don't approve what you don't get information. >> That's not what it says. It says you have to do it by March 1st, >> right? There has to be a there has to be a resolution, but that resolution they they've been typing those out. >> You may not have the information before you have to make >> Yeah. When when we're when working into the gray, that's that's a
037that's when we don't have the information. If you just jump on board and you just say yes, it's like the sheep, >> right? >> If I'm being honest and that's just uh I'm not trying to give recommendations right now. I'm just saying that's I'm just giving scenarios that that could be something that we have to >> that's kind of the normal I'll be honest with you everything the state does because they give us so many freaking gray areas >> right and then how much and then when they give us an an enforceable thing we say how much trouble are we going to get into that's the question if we don't do this then how much trouble we going to get into >> I mean that's >> so like I said until you know the till
038you know the full parameters of it consequences pro and for it's hard to approve anything until you know >> well and I parameters You just changed it. >> Well, I'm going to be honest with you. All the superintendents are going to be at Midwinter >> this next week. And I'm going tell you this will be this will be a center foc at at dinner. >> Well, I mean it's not it's it's not only for our district. It's not probably as big. I don't know how many people Muslim, Hindu, Buddhists. I don't know if we have any children that are practicing or not. Could we've had Muslim kids before? Um, but I don't know if if that how how it works, but also, you know, I mean it I don't want to I don't want somebody
039else getting Facebook ammo. >> Yeah. >> Well, the only reason specify a certain religion. It says all religions, >> right? >> No, I'm just saying if we don't if you don't take action on it. I mean, I don't want someone say, "Oh, those people, you know, >> I don't mind taking action." >> I mean, I don't mind like in English, they give them free time to read. I don't care if they pull out a Bible and read, but I don't understand why. >> But we can already do those things. It doesn't have to be. >> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, >> the problem is is somebody's trying to get a pat on the back by somebody. >> This is this >> No, not this is this is this is a in the political ether. >> No,
040I launched who who who did the the >> uh I could look I I don't they didn't put it in here, but you can look that who who authored this bill >> for it. probably the name. Probably the name. >> I cannot Is this is a recorded meeting? >> I can I cannot >> deny or deny >> anything like that. Ma'am, >> I just want to make sure that it it you know I mean it >> what on this I mean that that it adheres to the community standard I guess is what that's exactly >> that's that's what what I say. I mean I don't I have no issue. I mean >> they pray they pray. If they don't >> I mean I I I like the fact that we had prayer before football games.
041I mean, you know, >> but I mean, I just I want to make sure we adhere the community standard because it's >> I agree. >> I I don't want, you know, I mean, there we got a lot more to talk about than this when most kids a lot of kids are already doing it. But, you know, >> we have a very conservative community here. We do. And I I'm great grateful for that. >> And Bridges really does a great job. >> He has done a phenomenal job with absolutely leading all of that. >> And uh we have a concert Wednesday night. Just let y'all know. We have a courts of faith here Wednesday night. >> And I agree with the president. >> Yeah. And then uh >> we stand and move forward. >> But again,
042if as information comes to me, y'all will get emails to to enlighten y'all and then we can have discussion and our next board meeting. That's my goal. >> Sounds good. >> All right. So just those are the that was the two information items I had for y'all tonight. >> Okay. >> At this time, Go ahead. >> Well, um No, I just trying to make sure. No. Okay. Listen.
