001Heat. Heat. Yeah. Good afternoon everybody. We're ready to get started. >> Thank you. >> Okay. The regular meeting of the board of trustees is Thursday, May 21st, 2026, and it is 5:33 p.m. Uh, for the record, first order business is roll call. For the record, we have a a quorum. Everyone present except for Luis Yada. Uh, next item is invocation and pledge of allegiance. Dear heavenly father, we come before you this evening with grateful hearts as we near the close of another school year. Uh, and first I'd like to invite our middle school coordinator for athletics, Coach Sto. Good evening, school board, Dr. Tino, all members of committee administrators. I'm here to introduce a couple of groups. Uh, first of all, we're going to start off with our golf team, our boys team, our eighth grade boys team, and they come up these day one district. They did very well this year. Um we have Paul Sto Milo Emilio Montanes Joseph Steve Mar and Victor Oetta. They uh
004we won every tournament we played were we either were first, second, third, fourth or first, second, third, fourth or sixth. So they did really well. It's a good group of good group of boys coming up uh eighth grade and seventh grade. So got a good future involved. And also we had the individual district champion Ailia Gonzalez. He was the individual district chap for the uh district this year. So, congratulations Thank you. >> Ready. One, two, and three. >> Thank you. >> The next group of kids we're going to introduce is a couple. We're going to do the individual seventh grade winners that won in track cuz uh I don't see them here, but I'll go ahead and mention their names. We had as a team our eighth grade boys and eighth grade girls won district
005and we had a ton of district champs. So, I'll try to name them all. They're all here, but I'm going to go ahead and go through the seventh graders. If you're here, please come up. These are individual winners. For the seventh grade boys, we had Gabino Barera. See here, Juan Martinez, Julius, Christy Martinez, and our seventh grade girl was Julie Morales. These group of this group of kids were coached by uh Anna Viel, Jessica Pades, Renee Ravides, Sylvester Bamante, and Ela Lopez. So, if y'all are here, coaches, please come up with this group so you can take a picture. These are your seventh grade individual district winners per event. Now, if the eighth grade girls would come up, please were the district champs. Eighth grade girls. And they won by a lot. I don't know
006how many points. Just two. >> There's not a lot of our kids here because there's a lot of functions going on, but we had a big track group. I think we had a total of 120 total kids in both grade levels. So, we'd show up in four buses. Everybody freak out with us. Leania Carmona and Andrea de la Cruz. >> One, two, and three. Our eighth grade boys. Our eighth grade boys. Our eighth grade boys are district chs. And I believe they had like 200 what 270 points was 270 points. And I think the second team after that had like 200. So they DOMINATED READY? ONE, TWO, and three. >> Thank you. Thank you, Coach Sto. And congratulations to middle school. Of course, our principal at middle school is Miss Marvin Gera. So, congratulations to
007her and of course our students. Uh, next, I'd like to have our athletic director, David Boras, please come forward. Uh, next we'll have our our high school track team by Rebecca Garcia Gabby Montes. Uh good uh good evening school board members public. Uh these young ladies and gentlemen showed a lot of hard work, dedication, commitment throughout the season. They juggled through uh multiple sports, but they were still committed, showed up and uh the following individuals here all qualified to the area meet and then we had some qualified to the regional meet. We have Franko who qualified for the area meet in the 1600 meter and the 2400 meter run. Then we have Andreas Rodriguez who was part of our 4x100 uh relay team which advanced to the area meet. Then we have also part of
008the relay team and he also advanced to regionals in the 100 meter run dash I'm sorry. And then we have Mr. Adriani who advanced to the eight uh in the 800 both area and regionals. And then we have Mr. Rebecca Canales who uh also qualified he qualified to the area meet in the 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run and then he was also in a regional qualifier in the uh 800 meter run. All right. And he had both Eloy and uh Beto who ran in the in the uh regional meet. Uh they did really well. They both PR in uh in in both of their events. I mean, they they went up against tough competition, but they showed a lot of heart, and I'm sure they're ready for next year. >> Girls, we
009have Pablo Losa, who uh was an area qualifier in discus. Um, we have Angie Martinez who the area qualifier and regional qualifier in both the 1600 meter run, the 800 meter run and she was area champ in the 800 meter run. Um, Gonzalez was an area and regional qualifier in both the in the 3200 meter run. And we have Anali Gonzalez who was district champ in the 300 meter hurdles. She was an area qualifier and regional qualifier in the 300 meter hurdles. And she broke her district time at regionals. Ready? One, two, and three. Okay, next. I'd like to call our golf coaches up here. Uh good evening everyone. My name is coach Dwin Bosan alongside my assistant coach Pñena. Tonight we want to present and recognize and honor the student athletes of the Hawk
010and Lady Hawk golf team. Uh we have a few that are not in today. Uh like coach said, there's other functions that that are going on, but uh over the past several years, uh our program is has been built on the hard work, dedication, and commitment and outstanding teams that we've had in the past. Uh uh individuals who have held and established a strong foundation for our success is what drives our program. And this year, uh this group of of young men and women have continued that tradition. Um this year, the boys team qualified uh to regionals. And uh Juanula is here also where he is also a first time first team all district. Roeli Vanz also part of the team qualifier first team all we have Tut Pierz he's not here also part of

I'd like to present to you the 2026 varsity baseball team and by district champions. Uh guys, when I call your name, please step forward. Uh Chris Pena, Rudy Selenas, Laro Gera, Ryan Solis, Matthew Sepeda, Jacob Martinez, Damo Garcilaso, Diego
012Vad, uh Trey Garcia, Noi Camaro, and our my assistant coach, Coach Alvarez Jr. Um due to one of our team, one of our district teams being still being in the playoffs, we are unable to share our all district awards with you guys at this time, but here later on in the summer, we'll share that info with you guys. Uh once again, thank you for a great season. A little bit more, Miss Morales. >> Trey, go a little bit this way. One, two, and three. Okay, next I'd like to call on our head softball. >> Good afternoon everyone. How's everybody doing today? Everybody's good. I want to introduce the 2026 uh softball varsity softball team. U we're going to start with Carl Alvarez. She's a senior uh pitcher. We got Jayen Ramirez. She's a third baseman
013senior. Reina Devoske, a catcher, senior. Briea Garcia, sophomore, right fielder. Uh Kelli Benavides, second base uh freshman. Uh Kelanise, a sophomore, uh utility player, catcher, infield. Uh we got Becky Davila, she's a sophomore, plays outfield. Uh Abigail Navidides, uh she's a junior, plays first base. Uh Jia, senior, she's outfield. Uh Jackie, senior, outfield. Angelica Padres, senior, second base. and Arisa Garcia, senior center. Uh we're graduating a bunch of these girls. Uh uh their accomplishments. We won by district and then we lost a no biter in the air around to a very good West Columbia team. Had only lost like four games. So, you know, it's a hard battle. We lost lost at 98. And seniors were really going to miss the seniors. You know, they've been there three, four years, some on four years, some
014three. and it's going to be a hard group to to lose, but we're going to have to rebuild and get better next year and and do the things that we have to get to where we're at. So, uh like I said, uh congratulations ladies and seniors. We're going to miss you and uh and we did a great job this year. Hardworking and they're all all academic. They get they all have straight A's. So, great group of girls. All right. One of my assistants, he's not here, but that's my other assistant. >> Uh, what did I do? >> I did something. Give me one second. Sorry. Okay, y'all can breathe again. Ready? One, two, and three. >> Thank you. >> So, uh you two one of the teams being in the playoffs. Also, uh the girls
015all district selections cannot be uh released yet until that team is is done done with their playoff run. So, just like baseball, uh the girls all district selections we cannot release yet uh to the public as the district plan. Uh next, I'd like to call out our our head tennis coach, Coach Robert Al. All right. before you is our spring uh varsity tennis team. Uh before I even get into their their athletic accomplishments, I'm going to tell you this is just outstanding group of kids. Me and Coach Martinez, we drive them. We usually drive bands and we're all over South Texas and we have a good time with these kids. They're really good good kids. Uh credit to the parents for for bringing them up correctly. And we enjoy being and we are with them.
016Tennis is year round. So we're with them like nonstop all the time and we don't want to kill them. So that that's a good thing. Uh this year guys, we had an outstanding season. Uh we played a lot of tough tournaments. Always finished in the top five. We won our tournament and we topped it off winning the Corpus Christie ISD tournament which was a pretty tough tournament. We were able to win that. Unfortunately, our district like in softball and baseball, we had Tosso, which is one of the top teams in the state, and Kalan, but we we took care of Kalen, but Tosso got the better of so we finished second in district. I'm going to call out individually your accomplishments and just step forward. We're going to call your name. Uh first up we
017got Manny Garcia. >> Manny is first team all district academic all district and he was on the Texas Tennis Coaches Association academic allstate team. Something about Manny man. He's he's been a role model for the this is a pretty young group except for you know some of the seniors but Manny has been just outstanding work ethic, composure, leadership, everything. I couldn't ask for anything. I know he's going to be super successful wherever he goes in his in his next endeavors. Next we have Stella LOSANO and like but she is the district champion. She beat Kala. She beat both of THE she doesn't miss. She drives people nuts cuz she just get that kicking back. She look against the wall. She's first team all district, academic all district also. Had a great career with us. She
018was second team all district, academic all district and academic all state. AWESOME. >> All district, academic, all district and all state academic HALL DISTRICT, academic health district, and academic hall state. District and academic district step up. Lucia Lucia Jes. They won they won quite a few tournaments, placed really high and all of them they all of them ended up second team all district and they're all academic all district ALSO Valentina Los Santos this year they want they were able to win a few tournaments but unfortunately district are into a little bit of a tough draw so Honorable mention all district and academic all district. The whole team of academic all DISTRICT to my assistant coach coach Martinez. Like he does a hell of a job. We're out there non-stop all the time and we love
019him. Ready. >> One, two, and three. >> Thank you, Coach Boras. I'd like to ask uh Miss Garcia to please come forward. >> Okay. Uh >> uh good evening members of the board, administration, grandparents, parents. Uh if you know me or my family, then you know I've been in the fine arts since the day I was born. Uh when my mother retired as head director three years ago and her position was placed into my palms, I knew I had massive shoes to try and fill to make this community proud and most importantly to make these kids proud. Well, I think these last three years have been absolute proof of our team's passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence in the arts. Using everything taught to us, combined with our own vision, I, along with my incredible
020assistant coaches, Miss Andrea Gonzalez, Miss Christina Gray, and Miss Jenna Vadial, have guided this program to backto backto back state championship appearances across multiple arenas. To start this year, we had Mr. Manuel Gonzalez III qualify in poetry interpretation uh in the state championships for the first time in years, finishing seventh in the state. You want to come up here? Thank you. Yeah. Um, to date, our theater program holds five state championships, five second place titles, and two third place state titles between OAP and technical design, of which our own Miss Gelli Pñena added to that this year. He doesn't come up. >> Now, if you don't know what technical design is, out of over 1,000 plus submissions, the state only takes 13 to the state level. From the 13 professional technical designers, anyone from Broadway
021designers to Tony award winners who work in the industry, pick who best represents the top three of Texas's talent in their field. To date, Miss Fidelli has had three major accomplishments. Number one, she has appeared at the state championship level her entire high school career. Number two, in 2025, she won the second in the state, taking that title. And and now in 2026, she took the grand champion title in the state. >> So, congratulations, Miss Pñena. We're very proud of you. And some news, Gedelli is currently in the works to work alongside Tony award-winning artists at the Utah Shakespeare Festival this summer for her first professional debut in the industry. So stay tuned. >> Smile. Good job. >> Now, continuing on this year, I'm also thrilled to announce that we get to add another massive
022achievement to our legacy here at the theater. This OAP season, the Sapata High School When I Play Company took third place in the state of Texas, knocking out a total of 201 other 4 companies to get there. Now, why this is important is that if you are new to the world of OAP, um you need to know that it is an elimination contest. You get one chance to advance. If you as a director or if your kids have an off night, your journey ends. There are no takebacks and there are no second chances. So, to put what these kids that I'm about to introduce have done into perspective, there is only a 3.9% uh chance for any team in the state to make it to the state meet in any given year. They've done it
023three in a row, which is only a 0.006% chance. So, why? Because every competition is subjective in nature. You have to get three completely different adults from completely different backgrounds to agree that you are worthy of continuing. It is very difficult. And yet our kids here in Sabata, they love to shatter those odds. So with that achievement in mind, it is my honor to introduce you to the young brilliant minds who made this possible. The Sapata High School One Play team. Freshman, can I have freshman Caitlyn London? Freshman Caitlyn London. Sophomores, Briana Clary and Caitlyn Pñena. Juniors, Olga Pigoa and Kylie Ray. And my heart is about to break, but we have 10 graduating seniors, and you will notice that they are wearing all of their medals from the time they have spent with our
024theater department. We have Giovanni Nino, who received the honorable mention at state, the bronze, Delido Martinez, who received the silver all-star cast at state. Jose Luis Orta Jr. Manuel Benito Gonzalez III, SAMUEL, Daniel Weaver. Once again, Miss Delena, Miss Melissa Sanchez, Miss Mileen SALINA MARTINEZ. I have my coaches, Miss Christina Gray, the head of middle school to my hair, makeup, and set. And our newest is Jennif. Can y'all carry Dr. Dinho? Like >> one, >> two, and three. >> Can I take one? >> Thank you. I didn't get to take a photo. >> One, two, and Thank you to all of our coaches, our directors, our amazing students, and their parents for joining us. Uh I know that our board of trustees and superintendent uh typically address the audience. So, if you all could just
025hang back just for a little bit because I'm sure that uh that our board and our superintendent wants to address you as a group. I guess on behalf of the board, congratulations everyone. U everyone is gone except for the one act. Incredible job. Uh great great job every year the same thing. I mean it's always it's become a norm and a expectation for you all and it's incredible what you all do. I' I've watched you every year. I'm planning to watch you when you do it here in Sapata. So, and I'm I'm always amazed. It's incredible. Incredible. Everyone should watch it, by the way. So, that's all I have. >> We Miss Garcia, do we have a date yet for the performance? >> Yes, ma'am. The 28th at 6 p.m. >> 28th at 6. >>
026And it is free admission. >> Thank you. >> Donations are are welcome >> always. Uh I want to concur with uh President Bamz. Uh but also I just want to say uh you know one of the things that I've always said about our kids is that we have the most amazing talented kids. Uh and I'll put them up against anybody. But none of this happens without the tireless dedication of the adults that serve our children. uh coaches, directors, teachers, our administrators, they are all unified in their passion to serve our kids to make sure that they have these opportunities. whether they're traveling across Texas with tennis uh or heading to state and staying up super late at night waiting for results and uh late critiques. Um the the tireless work that they do. Um you
027know, teachers sometimes get a bad rap, but I will tell you that I will put anybody up against our our teachers and our kids because we have some of the best around. And thank you guys so much for everything that you do to support our kids. And thank you to the students for being amazing. If I'm not mistaken, pretty much all of our top 10 uh seniors are represented here tonight. And so we'll look forward to watching them cross the stage even though they're going to create a very big void in our hearts. So, thank you guys for being here. Let's let's move on. >> Commission, excuse me. Uh, there is no public comment recorded. Item eight. >> Good evening, Mr. Dr. members of the board. At this time, I'm requesting approval of the minutes
028for the board workshops held on April 9th and the regular school board meeting held on April 23rd, 2026. >> Thank you. >> Next item is item F, administrative reports. Uh good afternoon. Today I will be reporting on the financials for the month ended April 30th, 2026. For the child nutrition fund fund 101, the district had realized revenues of 2,463,0981 and expenditures of 2,325 195 for an excess of revenues over expenditures of 137,896. For the general operating fund, the district had realized revenues of 28,764. Oh, sorry. 28,764554 with expenditures of 23,84,447 with an excess of revenues over expenditures of 5,680,7. The year-to- date comparative by function compared the cumulative expenses in our general fund as of April 30th to what was spent this same time last year. Expenses for 2026 were 23,84,447, which is a 5%
029increase from last year, April 2025. For the debt service funds fund 599, the district had realized revenues of 2,499,04 with expenditures of 45,355 for an excess of revenues over expenditures of 2,453,649. for bills, claims, and accounts for the month. The district had bills paid in April of 1 million 08659, which was a 45% increase from last year of 750,781. The majority of that coming from our general fund and our MHM grant, which was the expenses of 94,000. And for donations, the district received donations in April of 7,977 for a total revenue of 116,748 divided amongst the campuses. Any questions? >> Thank you. >> The next item is item F2, district performance and financial code review. Uh thank you Mr. Lamides. Um members of the board, I just passed out to you some new reports that
030um we have been working on as it pertains to our first indicators. more specifically how the district is doing um as it relates to fund balance as it relates to cash flow and liquidity and of course our required report on tax collections that have been received as part of the revenues that Mrs. Luceres uh reports to the board. So we'll go ahead and get started. As of April 30th, 2026, um the district for the child nutrition fund has an estimated uh ending fund balance of 952,954. So, as you can see, um we have the audited fund balance, beginning fund balance as of 91. um what was presented to the board as an excess of revenues of $137,000, $100,000 of transfer in from fund balance that was approved by the board and uh year-to-ate incumbrances outstanding.
031If the district were to close its books as of today, the child nutrition fund would end its fund balance at 952,000. Um for our general operating bunt um same thing as uh presented uh the district had an excess of revenues over expenditures of 5.6 million. We had other financing sources or uses transferred out of 7 million. What that is uh members of the board is our committed fund balance, our assigned fund balance to balance our budget and uh expected assigned um expenditures for our debt service. So if we were to audit our fund balance as of today, the district would have an estimated ending fund balance of 25.9 million. And then of course our debt service beginning of the year the district had a negative fund balance of 116,000. Of that amount um we had
032116,000 transferred in from 199. We should have an ending fund balance of zero for a total combined fund balance of 29.3 million. that reflects a 2% decrease from previous year. Now, how does that districts can't use the total amount of fund balance? So, what is at the discretion um of the district to use for emergency purposes for child nutrition fund? We have a non-spendable fund balance of 103,000. What that includes is our child nutrition inventories as of today. And of the 952,000 ending, we have 849,000 that is unassigned. What does that mean? If we were to shut down today, the uh district has the capability of spending 849,000 in reserved uh quote unquote savings. uh 41% of the total fund balance represents operating expenditures for the child nutrition uh fund. However, what TA looks at
033is our unassigned fund balance. Our average monthly expenditure um in that fund is 290,000. And um if we were to not receive any more revenues, the district could operate for 3 months with its unassigned value. Now, TEA as part of its first uh indicators would rate the ZCISD child nutrition fund as a strong stable financial position. For 199, we have non-spendables of 7.4 million. That's the threemonth reserve that TA requires. We have a restricted fund balance of 6.6 million that has to be used towards the district's tax notes. So, we can't touch that. assigned fund B committed fund balance of 6.5 million unassigned of 5 million 5,400 uh for a total fund balance of 25.9 million. Um what that consists of is 22% of unassigned based off of the district's general operating expenditures. The district's
034um monthly expenditure is 2 8 million. So if we were not to receive any more revenues, the district could operate on fund balance for two months. TEA uh indicates that as part of our first indic indicators that is an adequate fund balance debt service fund um that amount of tax collection should be restricted for the purpose of the district's debt service. Whatever we collect from the taxpayers must be paid out to debt service. So ideally we should end up at zero. Um does the board have any question on this? As of today, um the district's fund balance and financial position in total is adequate as per TA's guidelines. Cash flow and liquidity also takes a um big um emphasis at to TEA. Basically, TA wants to make sure that districts have enough money to pay
035its payroll and its operating expenditures. As the board can see, uh the beginning cash for Sapata County ISD was $18.8 million. As of April 30th, you can see the bold we're at 26.5 million. That includes all uh district uh shortterm liquid assets. what we can take out of the bank tomorrow as it compares to prior year at this time we were at 28.1 million. So what does that mean? TEA has certain cash flow indicators. Um they measure districts on four big components as part of accountability. Uh the district has 26.5 million cash on hand as of April 30th. That equates to eight months of cash in reserve. Okay. The first target in order us to get the full 10 points, we should have three months of cash liquidity. The district is currently in a healthy
036financial condition. Payroll reserve. If we were to stop all other expenditures and only pay out payroll, the district has 11 months of cash on hand. We should have three. We are also in a financial uh healthy financial condition. Our total days of cash on hand equates to about 250. Our first target should be 90. Again, we would pass that indicator. and our current ratio. Um, what that means is what do the district's liabilities look like? Short-term liabilities look like as to compare to its current cash what we have on hand. Currently, we have 6 point our ratio is 6.99. TEA says that we should be greater or equal to a three ratio. So, we would pass that indicator. Does the board have any questions on fund balance and our cash, our solveny? Our tax collection
037summary as of April 2026, the district received $127,39.54. Um, as that compares to budget, we are uh at about 96% of the 8.7 million that was budgeted. As it compares to last year, we're ahead about 1.8. 8% and as uh as it compares to the opening levy, what we have on our tax roll, our tax roll at the beginning of October uh was estimated to be 9,48,000. We're currently at a collection percentage of 85% of uh that total levy. That accounts for about 1.6 6 uh% increase as compared to previous year at this same time. Does the board have any questions? >> Right. Thank you. >> Thank you. Thank you. >> The next item is item F3, presentation on student athletic handbook. Hey, so good afternoon, good evening everyone. Uh, just kind of, you know,
038before I kind of get into, uh, the presentation, I do want to reflect, you know, since all of our sports programs are done, I do want to share with the board and everyone at administration something really remarkable. Um, so there are moments in the school year when it's important to pause, reflect, and recognize achievements that represent more than success on paper. Today is one of those moments. This year, our athletic programs accomplished something truly remarkable. Every single one of our sports programs, for exception of one, made the postseason, and that is truly, truly remarkable. Um, from boys to girls, it didn't matter. Every single one of our sports programs made it to the postseason with our girls basketball team leading the way uh going three rounds, right? So, as an athletic director, I couldn't be
039more proud and more grateful um you know, for all of those um you know, coaches and the students and so on and so forth. Um so, this makes this achievement um especially meaningful. Um and it's not that it was limited to one team or one season. Success was shared across multiple programs providing that excellence is the standard uh rather than the the exception. Um sorry to our student athletes. Thank you for representing this uh school year with character, determination and pride. You have shown that achievement requires sacrifice uh perseverance and accountability to our coaches and our staff. Thank you all for the countless hours uh invested in our development uh not only in our athletes but in our young leaders. Um so again I just kind of wanted to share that with the board as
040you know we close out our athletic year uh for 2025 and 2026. So you know truly truly remarkable. Um so our presentation right uh why this handbook uh this handbook establishes a shared foundation of our athletes, parents, coaches and community. To avoid confusion, it is imperative that we operate under one unified um philosophy. Because our student athletes represent Sapata County uh ISD on and off the field, we hold them and our staff to the highest expectations. This document serves as a road map to the accountability and success. Right? So the the athletic handbook basically is broken down into two four uh four parts, right? your core mission and guidelines. Um you know just the basic missions and and and uh you know guidelines for the the overall uh athletic department. Then your your code of
041conduct and your standard uh not only for coaches but for players as well. Disciplinary action. What what is going to be the disciplinary action for you know students that you know obviously need to be disciplined. And then of course the last one communication and parent coach uh procedures. Right. So, one of the things that we're going to be updating to the athletic handbook is how we do the trial process. All right. So, it is the goal of the athletic department to offer opportunities of participating to every student who has the ability and the desire to do so. So, here I listed a couple of of uh programs that do have trial process. And these are not limited just to high school. They're also for middle school. Right now, just because one of these sports is
042on that list does not mean that they will have a try out every single year, right? So that does depend on participation rate, right? So the higher the participation rate is, right, the need for a try out, right? The lower the participation rate is, then you know what? We can carry everyone on the team as long as we have the uniforms, right? So those are just some of the the programs that, you know, do have uh triyouts. So participation numbers vary from high to low. So and that's actually a very good problem, right? Uh so we have a lot of kids that are trying out that want to play. That's a very very good thing. But it does have some consequences, right? So what is high participation? Uh how does that affect varsity sports? So
043for teams that carry one team, for example, soccer and golf, the number of athletes would be low. The the biggest one here is golf, right? So, we carry five girls and five boys. If we have seven or eight kids that are just outstanding, if allowed by the debt committee, we will allow a varsity A and a varsity B. Right. Uh I think a couple years ago before I got hired, Sapata did win district champs in varsity A and varsity B. But that really does depend on participation, right? Uh so when we have a very high number of participants, that's a good thing, right? But again it does have some effects. Now for example ninth grade participation is also very crucial for for instance girls soccer. Last year we had a very low low turnout when
044it came to girls soccer and participation rate. Right? So therefore maybe a trial was not necessary for us to have one because we were able to carry somewhat. Well this year that was not the case. we had a huge influx of incoming freshman that wanted to play uh soccer. So now therefore we need to have a try out right. So that's how participation you know rates kind of affect you know some of the challenges the coaches face and obviously one of them is playing time right how are we going to divide the playing time even though at the varsity level is not guaranteed by UIL at the Jam freshman level we do um require that everyone plays right uh and then of course we do have some cuts to be made um if that's the
045case when we do have a very high participation rate well how does low participation rate affect effect varsity sports obviously don't have a JV right and not having a JV does have its uh you know negative effects because it does it does lower the amount of competition that is done in practice and it does lower player development right so not having a JV because our our participation rate is low you know does have an uh its effects so next the number of players uh on varsity so if you look at all of our sports varsity sports Uh this morning we did have a head coaches meeting. It's our annual end of the year head coaches meeting and and we I kind of went around the room and I asked you know how many kids do
046you usually carry and why is it that you have that number? Right. Well it it does vary on coach philosophy right so for example if baseball has you know five pitchers and they need to accommodate for their for their position players then maybe baseball is going to carry 13 or 14 players right? Uh, in basketball, if you're kind of more of a, you know, running gun, which is you're going to carry a lot of guards, um, you know, maybe there's only a need for 12 kids on at the varsity level, right? If we have more of the bigger kids, right? I hope we had a whole bunch of Victor Whimoth, right? But that's okay. Um, you know, but so coaching philosophy obviously does affect how many kids we do carry on the team, right? and
047and and really um you know, you're looking at a more up-to-date philosophy when it comes to coaching versus versus a more traditional um you know, way of of you know, how we we balance our our varsity rosters. Hey, so varsity participation, so varsity participation um does not allow seniors to be on the JV, right? So grade level does not guarantee varsity participation. So if we have a kid who's a senior who's never played varsity before it he he or she does not get automatically defaulted into the varsity team. Right? So we do have um for example basketball or or if it's baseball or if it's one of those sports that I I listed um there on the slide um there is going to be a trial process but that just because they're a senior does
048not guarantee them to be at the bar state level right um you know so then and of course that's as per UIL >> so that mean I'm sorry so that means if you go back one slide UIL does not allow seniors to play on JD So if they don't make the varsity team, they don't make any team. >> Correct. Correct. Uh now it has happened before where seniors do play, right? But it's brought forward to the deck, right? And then the deck will make the the the the >> request a waiver or something. >> Correct. Right. And then they will make an exception where they'll allow a senior uh to play on the JV. But all of that is communicated through the de through the deck chair. All the ads vote. Of course, they bring
049that up to the superintendents if they have to to make a vote if there's not a consensus. Uh but you know that is a very very small exception. Um so how do we create an objective process for particip for participation? So in order for for everything to be not subjective, we're going to do everything that's recorded measurements. I mean it's it's going to be basic facts. So that way, you know, of course, we don't run into any issues. So what I did here is I provided a sample of a rubric that basketball would use. So for example, if you look at uh the sample rubric, mid mid-range shots, well, how many did she or he made? Well, if she made six out of 10, you can't argue with that because that is straight factual, right?
050How many layups, how many free throws, how many three points made, what's the speed like, right? You actually record what their speed is, and then their endurance. After you're done with that, then you rank them how they compare to to everyone else. It's kind of like the bell curve that we used to have in college, right? Uh so, okay, so if you know, and I'll give you a scored one, right? So, let's say this is David, right? Uh David had seven out of 10 when it came to the mid-range, eight out of 10 for layups, and so on and so forth. And then you see on the right side, which is where does he rank amongst the other people that also tried out, you're going to see a ranking. Well, you know what, David was
051one in mid-range, David was two in the layups, David was one free throws, three points. He was second speed and second endurance. So, David's already a very good basketball player. you add up the total at the very bottom, you're going to have final score. The le the smaller the number, the better, right? Because that means he's he's ranked amongst others at a very very high spot. That that will alleviate all the subjectivity from the trial process, right? Uh and I've done my homework. I reached out to a lot of uh my friends across uh the valley and you know you know did research and all that good stuff uh to make sure that you know we presented something that uh you know that we could all get behind. Uh so announcements for for for triyouts
052this will be the last part. So we are going to notify all the students um you know either through announcements or the parent square or you know whatever uh platforms we use uh to you know let the kids know that we will have triyouts. Now, we are going to provide the rubric before the triyouts, correct? And so, we are going to provide we are going to provide the rubric for the kids and hey, look, if you're going to try out for basketball, you know, we'll send it out on the parent square, right? And you know, they're going to know exactly what is going to be on that trial process. For example, I'll like for the one for basketball, that's what's that's what's going to be shared. Um so then after that uh the trials are
053going to be held by the head coaches, the assistants and additional uh professionals that coach uh deems necessary. After this is done and after the the trial process is done. The reviewing of the trials will come straight to me first. I will review all the trials first, right? Make sure that everything was done correctly, that we followed uh this because this would now be an arthletic manual, right? Or handbook. And then from there once I you know review everything I will take it to the campus principal and this of course also includes for middle school right so if it's middle school it's going to be Miss Gera it's going to be the high school it's going to be Miss GarcA she will then review that final trial process and once we feel confident that we're
054ready to go we will post it and we will post it by student ID right and obviously we do it by student ID because you know if a kid does not make the team you don't want it to stay on on the you know the paper that that kid did not make the team right so obviously the kids you know don't know everybody by their student ID so we we are going to do it by student ID so any any questions >> thank thank you for the for that presentation it's very it provides the public parents staff and everybody a very good view of what is expected and I just want to and that hard work that you put behind this. >> Thank you, sir. >> And yeah, and like I said, and it's just
055to completely take away all the subjectivity, right? I mean, you can't argue with them making six out of 10, you know, that that >> on paper. >> Any other questions? >> Thank you, coach. Appreciate your time, please. Okay. Uh, let's move on to item G, action items, uh, approval of 2025 2026 curriculum, writing, and summer school rates. Michelle, >> um, thank you, Mr. Gmidz. Uh, board of trustees, at this time, I'm requesting um that the curriculum writing and summer school pay rate stay the same as prior year. Uh what we've estimated um to be allocated is approximately 500,000 from federal funds and 100,000 from local and state funds. Uh, as you can see, uh, teachers will stay at the 45, um, $45 per hour, uh, curriculum writing 40. And then, uh, just regular PD not
056having students will be, uh, $30 per hour. >> Motion second by I see all those in favor. >> Motion carries. Thank you for the show. Um, okay. We will the board will now adjourn into close session pursuant to section 551.071 and 551.074 of the Texas Government Code. And it is 6:38 p.m. ready. >> Okay, we are back from executive session and it is 7:21 p.m. for the record. No action was taken. >> And we don't have anything else. The >> district communications. >> Uh yes, sir. We've got a holiday for Memorial Day on Monday the 25th. Graduation will be on Friday at 7:30. Our next board workshop is on June the 9th at 5:30. And our next board meeting, which is not on here, is June the 16th at 5:30. Um, yeah. So, June 9th
057and then we'll be leading to SLI. >> What's name? >> What is name? >> Board workshop. >> Okay. Like 5:30, right? Yes, sir. >> The employee banquet will be on the first at on the first at 6 o' >> June 1st. >> Yeah, you told me you weren't going to be >> How come I had needs to talk to you about that? >> For the other business, I need >> motion here on Tuesday. We are adjourned and it is 7:22 p.m.
