it's 300 East in Sandy Utah the first item on our study agenda is long range planning committee and um since we are running a little late I just want to ask the board do we want to do we want to move this I'm not gonna finish no way we're not we want to move it down to um business meeting or we have talked about in board leadership agenda planning that we are going to have long range planning on every agenda I mean we don't talk about it tonight we talk about it in two weeks anyway so I don't stop 630 630 6:30 we only have 20 minutes present and then we could save discussion for this present will take 20 minutes what are what's the Thought 20 minute present the information and then let you

look it over can we split it like can we I think we can move it down if want the presentation the discussion discussion in business meeting I think we should just go until we need to stop and then finish the rest of meeting regardless of what whatever it is okay okay we will do that so we'll plan to go as long as we can till 6:30 and then put it we can put it as [Music] item item short on time under we the J so we'll get going thank you you're welcome everyone I got plenty stored up here's a quick agenda that we wanted to address you can see them there our vision statement they're just so this is just a huge huge thing uh that we feel like we got to style it in

a little bit so we statement quick note we're still working with our demographer on demographic study we're hoping we don't have the his report hopefully by next meeting we'll have that I want to go over our enrollments our we've got preliminary October one those are the ones that always matter the most because those are our funding ones okay we do enrollment counts every month but October is the key one uh we'll go over some capacity and assess Elementary building capacity in East M and Jordan what they come back as Investments and then requests set for the next meeting as this will be on see this being on the next several agenda okay uh I want to thank Rick he's when you talk long range you talking addition you know building upgrades building modifications you know

looking at boundaries are we going to have to go down that path looking at closing schools du to inclining enrollment so all these things are just you know we all there are all many many many different strands in a big court if you will so we're trying to or balls in the air that we're all trying to juggle so uh we came up with this statement I'm not going to read the whole thing there it's here and it's on been on board dos but we want make this our Northstar you we look at the vision statement we want to make sure everything that we do is tied back into our strategic plan uh and that and of course our vision statement that every kid who attends Canyon school district was going to graduate college and

career ready and so all future projects what and all decision we made should be made based on that statement and on you know the and on the tenants of the district you know student achievement Community engagement service Innovation accountability uh want to make sure our students have the durable skills that they can succeed in our ability to support that I think we've done very good of that with our past buildings and we want to establish as we move forward you know steam principles embedded out throughout each pathway uh and so each student can experience you know mainly in high school can you know get the high school diploma the certifications they need again the full statement was there on board docs you know we looked at all the things that we have we feel like

we have a lot of great assets also a lot of great opportunities not going to go with them all a couple things there is our strategic plan I think that's our guidance light and we need to make sure everything ties back to that also I think the third bullet down is our student achievement we also got to make sure everything ties around our students a best they can so many other things going down that left side or as I look over there on the right side there are some things that we have we have a pretty good flexible balance we have a low certified tax rate compared to most all of our neighbors around we have some building capacities and we've done have a high property tax valuation many other things going down there again

we could talk about these later but here are the challenges for that we want to consider uh opportunities but some of these go on you know these are in both too so challenges strength and they're also a challenge uh we still need increase our student safety again that's a big one we have inflationary increases we talked about how much a building cost you know we talked about how much our high schools would cost Now Brighton and Hill Christ if we tried to start them now versus you know five years ago when we did uh we interest rates you know double where we issued bonds last our GE Debt Service you know we we're at a plateau but we're there that Plateau for the next five years till 2029 and that lowers down still pretty quickly

after that but it's still through 202 9 that it's up there uh we have lease revenue bonds again we're up at the plateau that but they go until 2031 on what we did with Peruvian and Glacier Hills we also have a big challenge with declining enrollment and other other factors there our cost of living our birth rates in the district and here's our priorities and by no means did we put these in any specific order uh you know always safety will probably always be our top one moving forward life skills you know you approved them to move down AC Crescent you building last time you we've heard about Janet and duck talk about ctech hit Jordan and Eastmont here in a moment but we also have the point hanging out there we have West Draper

property that you know was on our last Bond that's still available out there we have our a 1955 transportation building are when you look at fmic are far and away our worst building in the district you know we have to look at the fuel tanks at Transportation because through EPA standards we need to actually move them out of the ground and put them above ground we're supposed to do that by the end of uh 2024 about a year and a half from we're supposed to have those you have Hill Chris High you know their Turf needs to be replaced they also have just a six Lane track all the other schools have an eight Lane track so we would like to look at that we've talked a lot about the field houses well the fields

and the Fieldhouse at both Coral Canyon and Jordan and the fields at Coral Canyon the softball soccer and baseball and other things there we also like look at a wellness center for our employees daycare lots of things there so that's one area there we looked at our vision statement what we're going to try to address and it's going to take several meetings to get through it all this is not a and maybe even several months maybe those couple years you know when we say long range it's long range as we move forward with this uh so I'm gonna move off that as we're just going to present then have questions to kind of a 180 look at our elementary enrollments and our enrollments as as a whole so on boards I posted and I passed

out our enrollments for the last six years uh post of those on board dos again our October one counts they're actually due next a week from today we're hoping to finish those up by Friday so the amounts you see on these could change a little bit but we don't you know be just a few at each school so we feel like these numbers are pretty solid but again not the official ones we're going to submit to the state but we want to look at you know one of the things that you know I'm going to kind of geek out on you on the numbers because I'm okay and so I'm always going to look at a couple things I'm always going to look at our kindergarten because those are the kids who hope for 13

years right you can look at our kindergarten enrollment going back 11 years almost 2400 I'll just round to numbers here 24 the 14 15 year this was a year after our grade rate configuration where we had sixth graders going middle schools nth grad up to high schools you can see a drop just kind of you know some years it bounced up but kind of a a gradual drop down I think down to based on our preliminary ones we're about 1950 can garders uh I think you know you got to remember 2003 these kids would have been born in 2018 right well 2018 housing prices really started to go up not at B rate they did recently but they started to go up pretty high back then okay interest rates were still low hadn't hit Co

yet but uh you see a decrease there so over time we've lost about 18% that's about one in six kindergarteners that we had 11 years ago are not Pur you divide that by our classroom ratio 22.1 and we're that's almost 20 times of the karts that we had that we don't have big drop there again in elementary enrollments again the last 11 years you see there's these two years when we had the online school I included those okay but we were at 15400 H around that for a few years and you can just started to see this drop here okay and down to this year about 136 elementary kids K through five that's about almost one and 10 little over one and 10 you divide that we I used the pro rated classroom ratio of

you know our our based on it's 23.6 based on what we staff our two3 grades and our four fifth grades uh that's 76 classrooms right there students we don't classes that we don't have so that's quite a drw can you see this just going into the element we just see this starting go up into the elementaries now and it starting to get into the middle school ranks it's GNA soon get into the high school ranks two other things that I look at just by grade so I put this out again this is on this document this one pager I put a view this page here uh box you can see our our grades and so we start having we start out pretty high you know you can see our our grades just start dropping down

we have a little bit of a gap I see between third and fourth graders another a little bit of a gap between seventh and eighth graders in the district okay but you know we're pretty high in the high school ranks as you can see there but uh we just see you know we just see these starting to perate into the middle these enrollment decreases going into the middle there I also like to do a little analysis okay our kindergarteners who were last year first graders this year how does that look and then going on a lot through ranks there so we had 267 K gers last year first grader this year we have 2191 so we have 131 that's about average of kids you know I did the last 11 years we a about 120

kindergarten more first graders than kindergarteners the year before and parents keeping their kindergarten at home for that year right be interesting to see a year from now as we have full day kind Garten how that translative out many as many keep their child home during that Kinder Garten or not we'll have to see and then moving forward so one of the things that always a big one is going from grade eight to nine we always have a big increase there because we draw back the charter school kids mainly in the Draper area uh for high school for high school that's always been about 200 so 23 seven this year range so that's something that I always like to look at that's a little bit higher than it's usually been uh but that's you know we

watch that one of the numbers that I always like is 11th graders last year 12th graders this year these kids got to stay in and finish the course with us right and we're right there this year I do get concern 10th graders graders 70 down where are they that's concerning the I'll take the 409 nth grade to 10th grade that's an increase so again where we pull kids from also on the front you can see last six years by school some of the schools see decreases the schools were in our elementary were down 233 kids from a year ago all combined big hits look at H's area my area where I live been dropping quite a bit little Springs took a big hit year I'm thinking it's just because aging out right price so manda's

area in Lone Peak has been that same trajectory so one of the things that also BR was concerning to me was Midville we having some growth out there on the Blu but again we went down what 37 no excuse me about 67 students there so that's always a concern there should have been a little bit of growth you know again they haven't developed a whole lot prices and interest rates but the Mid Valley Way upid Valley picked up copper viw and copper viw because we did that boundary change picked up about 40 kids just in that drain change as well was there any changes between midell and East did they change boundaries on that anything uh but our you can see our middle schools some of that is starting to triculate into our middle schools

now some of that decreases so look at you know Eastmont Park all starting to drop as those as this web goes through our middle schools what Butler and Al been remarkably consistent years so it's always by school our high schools are just really knocking it out they're packed this year so big great job by all our high school principls our staff's there uh you can see every one of them's up or this time last year 200 plus kids up so that's a big increase there so uh well that's our enrollment that we'll watch as we continue to make make decisions going forward again I got three minutes I'm g go quickly capacity we're going to talk building capacity we hit high school and middle school a while back we wanted to update the middle Elementary

capacity big thanks to Alice for doing that uh it's always a tough thing about capacity because sometimes you I hear mon say the old accountant joke we give you what you know I need a number and the old outage is what do you want the number to be can be the sun of the same thing on capacity especially at our elementary schools we got Rin boosters and achievement coaches and preschool and everything El so it's a little bit different than at our high schools and Middle School basically I won't go across to all the numbers here but you see just the total facility capacity I'm just taking the total we're taking the total number of rooms times it by you know using the number of 23.6 it's up here on this one to get the

capacity of each school but you really can't use it that way because we got brain boosters and they have to be somewhere got three we gotal units they all have to be somewhere so we have to back some of those out to get to what I call really a true number and that is going to be number right here I'm use this I'm going to call available capacity this facts this only counts to K5 rooms and our resource rooms everything else is going to be backed out so I'm going to say our capacity is 15.5 15,500 kids based on our 10day account I didn't update this for the oal be about the same right now using those numbers be this green col what we're at as a percentage of capacity so you know 87% total

so again got some schools way under some you know there Dre bir's a big school right now Sunrise also have big enrollments when need capacity should be said Sally and Alice as we went out as they went out there is about 65 rooms though districtwide are really not being used this year for anything for really anything yeah uh now now if you have like me you have a house I have a room in my basement as a guest bedroom and I have so many sleep there three nights a year probably you have something like that you know they may have use it as the PTA room where they meet a couple times a year or something like that something like that where they could easily do it elsewhere but that's we look about 65 rooms

vacant you how many classrooms is an a Elementary School have so when we built the mid Mid Valley perubian Glacier they are this would include the unit 33 so you've got you've got two elementary schools Place Holly just when you look at the the percentage of capacity I've just highlighted anything that's under 45% capacity and those can easily we combine that with other schools that are at 50 or 60% but we have if through the right point right I know but we H but we have but I mean we have seven Schools they're less than 45% capacity and to me that's a more telling story than the classroom but that's that's only counting the regular red they're not the special programs that they put in there because you don't have to look at the green

the green one green one's more accurate because instance oh oh because the white one is before we move stuff around special program any special programs see the difference like on Willow Canyon in my case from 43 to 83 there's a ton of special programs that have pulled that up there's no empty hardly any fact there's really no empty well well you know you have the special leg you have a prek and you know and you have the brute booster so that makes they use that up that's why you get down so with all that next thing would be these assessment reports but guess what that's gonna be a teaser for the next out of time job [Music] Leon discussion and now units that aren't counted in the capacity yeah but brain boosters is just kids

rotating from the other classes they still have to have a room they room to you do have that's where the BTS teachers usually are but even still I mean still I mean the total enrollment any of these that are below 400 students yes that's a big deal that that's school is funing with or 3 any special at all tune in again next week stay tun see why we get nowhere because if we talk about building usage that's one problem which is why we're send giving this information now so see and then when we want to do other things are we gonna have to change boundaries total enrollment that's the number that really matters the enroll enrollment special program okay Dr Robinson we are excited to have our next item which is the student advisory Council

I feel very fortunate to be able to share this type of news and celebration especially in onload meetings but um thank you president shill for this opportunity to help support the board in this process of pulling these wonderful students together as you can see we have a tremendous group of students that are here we have 23 students invited all together and as you know being teenagers and being in high school there's quite a few welcome welcome come on in we have so many different things that are going on I know one particular thing with the Shakespeare um event that's taking place here very soon there's several at a meeting for that travel that will be taking place so we're really express our gratitude once again to our students for being here and um representing our

was just so fun for me um my claim to fame is that I taught at Willow Canyon former student yes my second year teaching I had his mother she brought the class picture and showed everybody to prove it was true it I know and I'll claim it gray hair and all so anyway um I represent the center part of the district um Willow Canyon being one of them but I also represent Jordan high Alta I don't have them in my districts but I my students feed into those schools and so I spend a lot of time Hill Crush Jordan Alta I claim you all so and and trot is mine diamond ridge building anyway so um I'm just excited to have you be part of helping us with our with our planning and learning how

we can better help you Mt millerberg uh been on the board for a while back when I used to earn a living I earned my living as a certified public accountant um I am a proud member of uh I should say I'm a Hill Crest Alum proud member of the class of 1968 you guys weren't even thought of that okay um represent a good portion of the Midville area and uh I do take some interest in Brighton High because I have a granddaughter that attends school there great I'm amberelle and I represent cotwood Heights and Brighton High School I've been on the board for nine years and I'm just really excited to get to know you guys and just realize it is important for this position that you're in is important because we want to

hear from you guys so that we can learn and make our schools better so it we would really love it if you try to make every lunch and I know stuff comes up but it is really important and as you can see like we all the board all loves loves to get in fact we kind of like have to fight over who gets to come to lunch each month I'm Amanda Oaks I represent um heart of ster and Sandy so ala high school is in our boundaries but my boundaries but so is dper Park midle I have um a daughter who goes to Corner Canyon who works at the DD before and um I am so excited you're here we often talk in the district about um remembering who the customer is right we can

get caught up in a lot of different things but at the end of the day we want to make sure that your experience is positive that it's world class and it's setting you up for success in the adult world and so it's so important to us that you come with suggestions and talk to your peers bring suggestions from your peers I hope that part of what comes out of this you're able to communicate with your peers about what the role of the board of education is and that we actually do want to hear from you um there are very few way people that get more attention than an articulate student that comes to one of our board meetings that has something to share and if for any reason you're unable to attend and you have

thoughts or ideas feel free to send us an email we would always love to hear from you so I'm Andrew Edo just trying to see all of you uh I represent District Four which is the Western portion of Sandy uh up into uh South Midvale so I represent just a sliver of Alta High School uh the majority of Jordan and then a bit of Hill Crest and but you know all the schools are schools and so you're all amazing my day job I work for the Utah Air National Guard uh when he was going into the side uh and like Amanda said though the role that you have here is really vitally important um as you may have noticed nobody here has been in high school for a minute some some longer than others um

and uh so you know what you guys see um the input that you guys have uh do take that seriously because uh it'll actually make a a pretty significant and a far-reaching impact that uh you might not see immediately but all the students who come after you will definitely feel thank you for doing it hi am Holly Nar I represent Draper Corner Canyon uh I got some boys there Alex and Ty who graduated Isaac who's a senior and George now who's a freshman so I don't know about Andrew I feel like it's hasn't been a minute since I've been in high school in fact I'm going through my fourth time at cord no I I love student advisory it's fantastic love to hear from you guys I hope we have a system in place because

I know sometimes there's AP review tests and there's things that you really cannot miss or you got a debate or whatever's going on but I hope we have a system in place that you can find a sub and it really could be just a peer because you know it doesn't have to be someone that has a role in a a leadership necessarily really because we like that smattering it's amazing all of the things that you guys are doing and accomplishing and it's really impressive actually but we do just love to hear from all of you and so these are our most informative meetings we love it we love to ask you questions we want to make sure that the vision and goals we have are you're filling in the classroom so super excited to have

first item on the agenda is to approve the agenda for tonight so can I have a motion for that I will make that motion I move that we approve the agenda tonight with one change and that is a continuation of the discussion from long range planning committee presentation and discussion that we continue that um as item 9f okay okay thank you um we have a motion is there a second to that motion I'll second it okay is there any discussion to the motion okay seeing none I will call for vote all in favor say I I any opposed okay that motion passes unanimously and now we will have the Pledge of Allegiance by principal Dedra wck from Oakdale Elementary and then she will share some school highlights well the audience please rise ready begin I

pledge aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all well I'd like to thank the board for allowing me to come and speak with you about Oakdell Elementary and share some of the things that make o Oakdell a great place to be with the implementation of the canyon strategic plan I would like to highlight one area of the plan we've focused on at Oakdell which is our human centered supports it is important at oakal that we allow students family and staff to feel safe supported and have a sense of belonging at Oakdale I want to focus on two examples of remarkable progress towards this goal we have had a challenge over the past few years

with absenteeism and chronic absenteeism uh and with the with input from our teachers our staff our PTA and our school Community Council we have focused on our school climate with the implementation of a schoolwide attendance incentive program last year we made the Potato Head challenge come to life each day classes can earn a point to build a Potato Head classes are able to earn Parts when 90% of the students 90% of the class is in attendance by 900 a.m. each day once the class earns 10 pieces The Potato Head is built and the they become come the walbeck winners and they can spend for prizes uh of their choice prizes vary from one minute dance parties in the class to class game time to a treat to even the bigger prizes where they get to

earn a specialized Potato Head from wbec and I have to tell you to make note who know that Star Wars Mando Potato Head was so popular but it is I have to keep several of those in the building uh as we begin our second year of this program I am happy to report that students are engaging and want to be at school we have had 94% of our students since the beginning of the year become a wbe winner and we have several classes that have had 100% attendance since the beginning of the school year this year we have enlisted support from our PTA and we've created The Potato Head posi and the P posi helps me to give the prizes out each week and they go around the school with me to deliver the prizes

and engage the students in fun activities the next example I'd like to highlight is the difference that our support staff make at Oakdale we can't do what we do at Oakdale without them our brain booster staff have done a fantastic job in creating fun and engaging learning places for students no matter what the students needs are or their abilities I want to share an example from our playwork coach coach Mike we were lucky to have him join our team last year and Mike actively seeks out ways to engage students and support them and our staff this year he has embraced the need to create a safe supportive learning environment by creating a group called the kindness ambassadors our kindness ambassadors are made up of fourth and fifth grade students these students were chosen based on

their example teacher feedback and students desires to Simply make a difference once a month our kindness ambassadors eat lunch with Mike and talk about what it means to be kind support their peers at all grade levels and to look for ways to include all those around them one thing our ambassadors have decided to do is seek out seek out students and who need friends or groups to play with during recess time this has helped all students to feel needed and included at school coach Mike is is one of the amazing staff that have embraced the vision of creating an environment where all can learn feel safe and supported I would like to conclude by sharing my thanks to you the board and the canyon the and the canyon Board of Education Dr robins and all

of those who have given us a strategic plan that helps uh me to navigate our plan for the future for our students with this tool it has allowed me to engage in different ways and support all of those within our school Community thank you for your time okay thank you so much principal wck and um I love how you focused on human centered supports and that was really fun to hear about the Potato Head Challenge and then the Potato Head posy that is really fun so thank you so much and pass on our thanks to your faculty for all they do okay the next item on our agenda is is Canyon strong student recognitions by Jeff Haney director and Kirsten Stewart associate director of communications president sh I have to apologize this week we're focusing

on employees then we'll go to our students next week this was my fault because this week was the week that we provided the information for you about the canyon strong employees to the Board of Education so next week we will revisit the accomplishments of the students in Canyon's district and we'll focus now on the employees who make us strong now our first honores tonight are the Canyons District custodians they are the unsung heroes of Canyon schools you know it's true we would be hot messes without them and that's both literal and figurative and Monday was National custodians appreciation day and we wanted to pause to thank all of our custodians for keeping our buildings Spark sparkling clean they are often the first to arrive they're the last to leave and they do the kind of

jobs that no one really no one else wants to do but they're happy to do it and they do a great job Canyon's district has 150 full-time custodians and more than 600 part-time custodians they keep our schools healthy and clean they are truly Canyon strong so thank you custodians for all of your hard work and your commitment our fa facilities are the Envy of other school districts across the state and it's because our custodians keep them in tiptop shape so it was National custodians appreciation day and we're also spending today thanking our custodians for their hard work now two facilities Department employees also were nominated for Canyon strong honors you'll see pictures of them Zack Epley and jiren Jarvis have worked so hard to improve the Landscaping at Willow Canyon Elementary School now for many

years Willow Canyon has needed improvements in the front of the school and that was due to Major sprinkler issues and not having the manpower to fix the problem the facilities Department also had to put this on the back burner because they were addressing many other issues but early this summer Zach and jiren took on this project to make Willow Canyon welcoming again they knew a new principal was coming into to the school and they didn't want this to be the first impression that she had of the school plus they wanted Willow Canyon to arrive looking at their building with a lot of Pride so they knew it was going to be tough but they did it there was this big project they took on with no complaint even in the 100 degree weather and the

nominator of these two employees said this if we had more employees like Zach and jiren our district would be a much better place I believe The Pride they have for the Canyons District building shows in the finished product if you have a chance go check out Willow Canyon it looks really good Miss Pon what do you think yeah they did a fantastic job they are our facilities department does a phenomenal job and making sure all of our buildings are in tiptop shape we also honor tonight two teachers who have proven they are Canyon strong with their instructional skills and talents they both were nominated by admin rators to be honored tonight by the Board of Education as part of Canyon strong Marcia Dean a third grade teacher at Altera Elementary is a master at building

relationships with students her positive friendly nature helps her connect with each one of her students each morning can find her greeting every student at the door to her classroom by name they have a variety of ways they can choose to be greeted some have a half five some have a fist bump others might pick a pinky hug or a curtsy and each student is recognized and welcomed by her daily last year her student achievement scores were among the best in the school she's an awesome team member as well and supports her team of teachers as they look for ways to continually improve instruction so congratulations to Marcy and thank you for helping us become and stay Canyon strong and Morgan Hansen is another teacher that we wanted to honor tonight she's a kindergarten teacher at

Willow Springs she integrates social studies science and language arts in her classroom recently she was observed teaching about Johnny apples seed and the life cycle of apples her students loved the Hands-On activity that included making applesauce she took several opportunities to discuss site words and adjectives that described apples versus applesauce now this is the kind of instruction that makes our schools Canyon strong so thank you Miss Hansen for all you do for Willow Springs our next honores tonight in our employee Canyon strong recognitions are the marching band directors at Alta Brighton and Hillcrest High Schools our marching bands are finishing among the top bands at their field show competitions thanks largely to these three that's ala's Caleb shaper Brighton's Michaela mortensson and Hill crest's Austin Hilla at the recent ochre Hills Invitational Brighton finished in

third place in Alta earned fourth place in the 5A open category and Hillcrest finished in first place in the 4A Scholastic category and at last week's competition Brighton finished in second Alta finished in third and Hillcrest finished in fourth our marching bands and color guards have been working since summer I mean they spent a lot of time preparing for this season for their field shows they go to band camp every summer and it's a lot of hard work the the field shows are athletic they are artistic and we encourage everybody to show up to strike up for the bands now I'm a former bandad I was always amazed at how much work goes into directing a band if you think about it there's close to 200 high school students on the field at any given

time all playing instruments and all walking in either separate or different directions and they do it phenomenally well the final competition of the year for our marching bands is the Utah Red Rock State marching band competition that's in St George on November 3rd we give a big thanks to Caleb Michaela and Austin who really are at the ground floor of building the tradition of excellence in marching band in Canyon school district think about it like this 10 years ago Canyons didn't have one marching band now we have three that are among the best in the state and it's largely thanks to our teachers and also if you're up tomorrow you'll be you'll see me and Dr eschler we'll be at Jordan high school now this is also an incentive for you to finish early because

we have to be at Jordan High School at 6:30 to be with Fox 13 because they Jordan high is being featured as the Cool School of the week from 7 to 10: we'll have a Jordan High student teacher or staff member on FOX 13 talking about the amazing things that are happening the home of the beat Digger so please tune in to see our amazing students in action so president chill thank you for this time to recognize those who make his Canyon strong okay thank you so much um we really appreciate that and we'll make sure we get it right on the agenda for next meeting okay we have now come to the patron portion comment portion of our meeting the board often designates time in meetings to listen to the the patrons of the

district Patron comment time is limited to Residents and taxpayers of Canyon's District students and parents of students and current employees of the district patrons May provide board members with written documents these documents must be submitted to the board secretary at the meeting or email to the office of public Communications by noon of the day following the board meeting and right there is our board secretary thank you Cindy um tonight individuals will be given three minutes those representing groups will be given five minutes and comments made during Patron comment are part of the public record it is the board's practice to listen and take notes during Patron comments the board of education does not discuss matters that are not on the meeting's agenda nor engage in public comment on individual students to protect their privacy or

employee issues if a patron wants to comment on a District employees character profession competence or mental or physical health the board request that those comments be submitted to the board in writing however if the patent determines to verbally comment on those Personnel issues the comments need to be civil and refrain from personal attacks insults defamatory or slanderous comments about an individual the Board of Education would like to make it clear that critical race theory is not part of the curriculum being used by Kyon school district there are no plans to incorporate it into the curriculum or instruction in Canyon schools the Board of Education values input on all sides of issues to maintain decorum and respect we ask that those in attendance refrain from Applause or other types of demonstrations during the patron comment time

as well as throughout the meeting comments must be age appropriate considering children who may be present or viewing online okay we have three patrons that have signed up today the first one is Heather Erikson and then Katherine English sorry my name is Heather Ericson and I have worked at East Midbell Elementary in the library since January of 2011 we have worked very hard in our school to make sure the needs of all of our students are being met including offering of variety of world languages our students speak 17 languages in their homes one is English several years ago we had the rather large influx of Syrian refugees to help those students we ordered books in Arabic for our library in the Years following we have welcomed students from the Democratic Republic of the Congo Somalia

Russia bellarus Iran Iraq Afghanistan Brazil Venezuela and Colombia to name a few I have made a very concerted effort to make sure all the home languages in our school are represented in our the shelves of our library I have even had students this year ask for books in Navajo and tongen English is spoken in their homes but they want that representation and tie to their culture in our library one of the most exciting changes that has come with has come with our Spanish books last year we circulated 300 61 books off of three shelves up from 208 the year before I was really proud of the circulation of all of our world collection this year with the influx of funding from our principal and from The Canyons board we now have seven shelves of Spanish

books already this year we have had 127 books in Spanish borrowed from the library that's 37% of what we did all school or 35% of what we did all school year last year the excitement is building as kids find the same exciting new titles in also on the shelves of also on the shelves with the Spanish books not to mention the fact I struggle in English anyway but I have also had to make really good use of my college Spanish as we have gone through and updated our collection getting rid of books that were no longer relevant we have seen a boost of almost 1500 books in circulation from the previous year we have replaced old and out-of-date books with new and current information and have tried to make our library full of books that

reflect our student body it has become not only a room full of Windows and mirrors but doors and elevators in addition we have a holiday book section that is no longer Limited to Halloween and Christmas but includes dwali Hanukkah juneth Ramadan Day of the Dead and holy I wish I could share with you the look on a student's face when they find a book from one of those holidays that is celebrated in their homes on our library shelves I bring with me tonight a thank you card sorry does that mean I'm done yeah I bring a thank you card that they signed so and I'm grateful for I I don't know who I do I give you the is anyway thanks to you and okay thank you so much and we will pass that thank

you card around thank you okay the next Patron is Katherine English good evening my name is Katherine English I have children who attend Altera Elementary and participate in the Spanish stool immersion program there my family is so grateful that the Spanish GLI program was added at Altera a few years ago we had previously tried to enroll one of our children in a Spanish DLI program at a different Elementary School in the district and did not get placement in the lottery there due to there being more applicants than space in the program so we are so glad that Canyon's District responded to the high interest in Spanish DLI and created programs at additional schools I am one of several parents who would like to encourage Canyon's District to consider adding secondary Spanish GLI courses at Indian

Hills Middle School and ultimately ala High School one of my children is in the inaugural class of Spanish GLI students at Altera Elementary and these students will progress to middle school next year year the 2024 to 2025 school year typically students from Altera would attend Indian Hills Middle School and ultimately Alta High School which is only two blocks away from Altera Elementary Spanish DLI students from Altera however are expected to attend Mount Jordan Middle School and ultimately Jordan High School if they want to continue in the Spanish GLI program although this was not made clear to parents when the Spanish GLI program was added at Altera looking at the DLI feater chart on the district website for other di programs where students are learning Spanish or French or Chinese the secondary DLI programs are housed

at the middle schools and high schools that each of the DLI elementary schools would normally feed into in some cases two neighboring middle schools each offer the same DLI language in order to prioritize each Elementary DLI program continuing on to the Middle School it would typically feed into also in some cases one Middle School houses DLI programs in two different languages so that students coming from the elementary schools that feed into it can continue their DLI studies at the middle school they would typically attend uh several parents of DLI students at Altera Elementary are concerned that their child may not be able to continue the Spanish DLI program secondary level due to distance in order to prioritize as many Canyon District DLI students as possible continuing the DLI program into middle school and high school

I would ask that the district consider adding Spanish GLI level classes at Indian Hills Middle School and ultimately ala high school thank you for your time okay thank you very much um now we have Aubrey Graham hi my name is Aubrey Grim I'm actually just here in support of the same issue um my child too uh was in the inaugural class at Altera and we noted we realized around the third grade she's in fifth grade now that moving forward she would have to go on to Mount Jordan and many of the students in Altera would too and they all actually are zoned for Indian Hills had they gone to their um neighborhood school so just in support of the other parents that's why I'm here just to yes ask for the consideration that um Indian

Hills receive a Spanish for those students thank you okay thank you so much to everyone who came and spoke to the board tonight okay the next item on our agenda is to approve the consent agenda so I will ask for a motion for that at this time and please read all the items make a motion since everyone is chomping at the bit to do it okay I'd like to make a motion to approve tonight's consent agenda which includes item a approval of minutes for September 19th 2023 Item B approval of hire inter termination reports item C approval of purchasing bids item D approval of student overnight travel item e approval of Lea specific licenses and endorsements item F approval of Altria settlement and item G approval of social media attorney client engagement agreement okay we

have a motion is there a second to that motion I'll second it okay thank you we have a motion and a second is there any discussion to that motion okay I will will ask for a vote now since um there's no discussion so all in favor say I I any oppos okay thank you that motion passes unanimously and now we are on to new business and the first item on the agenda for new business is the Strategic Plan Focus Group report for Access and opportunity and Paula Logan director of federal and state programs will present that yes we are all very excited for Paula's first presentation I offered to go next week if you were behind but you recovered all right um I've been over access an opportunity um and this has been a fabulous

it's been a fabulous committee to talk about many of the exciting things that we are doing to help all of our students access education um if you look at just that next slide um that's just a list of who is oh I have it right here she's like you have a clicker there we go um that's who is on the committee so from the board we have Nancy and Karen and Mont and then we have Nate who's over special ad Cindy um Amber Jesse Dr Robbins myself Dr Migel and Dr Robinson so we've had some very exciting meetings um access an opportunity and I gave you this is on the handout that I gave you as well we have um One impact statement two strategic initi initiatives seven success criteria and throughout those items we're

referencing about six different stakeholder groups so there's lots going on and some important things and this is a little small for you to read so hopefully you have your handout which is probably also a little small so you need reading glasses I'm sorry um but we have a variety of things so the option or the real purpose of our access and opportunity is to make sure our our students have access to those resources and opportunities and we build that positive and inclusive environment for everyone to participate in um the Strategic initiative is there in the yellow but our schools will provide opportunities and experiences designed to build understanding and advocacy of all of our students and this is characterized by a focus on our multilingual students special education students students with 504s and our Advanced

learners then in that first part is where we list kind of those success criteria that are listed in our strategic plan on that second one are just different things that second line are things that we have talked about I've highlighted the ones that have taken quite a bit of discussion in our groups so um first is the home visits Grant which was before I came to the group but we've been working on and currently we've had over 800 home visits um so that is quite a lot we're training another I think 72 teachers on Friday um to do home visits so that has been going really well and we're really appreciative of that Grant from the state um we've talked a lot about the elementary school programs and I'm going to get to that a

minute in a minute um as a matter of fact I'm just going to go to another couple slides so you know where all that is so in our current discussions um one of the things for our elementaries is looking at a template for our elementary schools um and this has been a big discussion item we're going to pull it up here but what this is is we're creating these links um that we're going to put on all of our Elementary websites so the parent would Link in and then they could see the different things that are happening at that school we'd also like to create we're exploring different ways to do this but like a master list that our school Community Council um and our principles could access especially when we're having those discussions around

tssp and what we can do to better impact our school so I could say I'll use middle school as an example because that's my world but when I was the principal at Butler maybe I heard of an idea that someone at Indian Hills did and so I would access that through this that I could see that oh indeed they did do that and this is who I could contact to find out about that program so hopefully making our schools a little more make it a little easier for them to collaborate over those very specific things that they think can help their students um so that's what that's our current thing we're going to have that in place um so that should be on our Elementary websites by the end of this quarter um that we

that parents and the public can access that for each of their schools in Middle School we've talked a little bit about developing a toolbox with ISD for strategies to Target our students both who've already mastered that topic as well as those who have not yet mastered that standard and need an extension um we're connecting with our stem activities again with ISD we're looking at how to create those activities so that every student across the curriculum has access to those and to develop a common understanding um Cindy's working on this with some of our counselors kind of a one pager to describe the purpose of middle school and identify those Pathways that lead into High School opportunities so that's where we are on those two when we go to our high school our current discussions have

been identifying classes that indicate college or career Readiness one of the frustrations some of our high schools have felt is we're trying to do our tssp plans is that our AP data doesn't come until mid July if we're lucky um so we wanted to gather information on students in those classes that have a c or better so our first task is to work with our high schools identify what we think those courses are and create a data set on dashboard that our high schools can look and see which students are passing those classes that we feel are indicating they're ready for college or career we're also working on our teen centers um Hillcrest has an amazing teen center and this is a place for our students who are experiencing homelessness to get resources and supports

wash their clothes um access some showers some food the food pantries and those types of things so we already have that working and running really well at Hillcrest we're building at Jordan um which I'm sure you're very aware of but we're also we've got a grants in to work with diamond ridge Al no diamond ridge I've just lost all my names diamond ridge Brighton those are the two and um then Jordan and Hillcrest then next year we'll do grants for more more of our high schools to come on board with that so from there that's our current discussions um we did identify kind of our next steps or where we want to go um with Elementary similar to the idea we had in middle school we want to work to create that box of instructional

strategies or resources for teachers so that as we're teaching a unit kids who have mastered that already have extension deliberate extension activities and kids who are struggling we have some resour our es that teachers can turn to for interventions um in middle school we wanted to really work on preparing for high school so going back to the document that Cindy's working to prepare identifying those clear Pathways and encouraging our kids to be thinking about that and strengthening that process in high school um we've got to get those data sets but then once we have those looking at the engagement and course demog graphic data and seeing where those gaps are and then making sure we're Distributing our resources correctly so that we're getting all of our students the same access um we want to look

at marketing CTE courses and certifications and concurrent enrollment one of the big discussion items with our high school people was that cost and earnings that when you graduate from high school you have um so many college credits or a certification that you can go out and earn a better way age so we wanted to work on marketing of that and then as we develop more within that portrait of a canyon scholar that we build those connections in with our high school and that is our report Nancy Mont Andrew not Andrew nancym Karen I looked over here and I saw Andrew and threw his name out so you don't you weren't on the the hoty yet anything else that you want to add I I'll just say thank you for that report as you can tell

as you can tell though there's a lot going on there is and and all I I love how the Strategic plan every one of these U Focus area committees there's some overlap so that we can get various um perspectives and things and this is one of those um committees that I feel is very um very comprehensive but it touches on every one of the other committees very much so and so I appreciate your leadership of the committee and helping us stay organized and and with the plan and yeah the discussions are really wonderful and so thank you well and a shout out to our um principles that came in we did some subgroups with the middle school the high school and the elementary and so they came in gave us some time as well and

that was very helpful okay any other comments yes Mr millerberg and then Mrs o and Mrs N you know Paul it's been a lot of a lot of fun and you know Canyon school district is a great place to be it is but what I've really appreciated about our committee meeting is the ability to admit we're not perfect the ADM you know the ability to admit we can improve and there are some pretty hard questions being knocked around and some pretty uh pretty good discussion of people not always agreeing on the way it should go but I really appreciate your ability to uh monitor those conversations and keep us on track but it's been a lot of fun for me because I you know I always like a good argument yes you do okay um

can we let Mrs peton go first since she's on the committee yes committee first I just wanted to point out um in our conversations we've been spending quite a bit of time talking about opportunities and making sure that students have opportunities and that parents are aware of the opportunities that our students have and that at each level they flow into each other one of the other components that we're really going to be looking at a little more carefully once we have these established these these um level steps is the access part is there a group of students or that are not being able to access these opportunity these classes and things we simply can't do them all at once but the first step was to say what do we have yeah and so we're taking

all of the wonderful things that the it's it's a great committee to be on because you get to take all the wonderful things that all the schools are creating and have been doing putting it into a a a database and being able to allow um schools to learn from each other and collaborate as you mentioned and then we can refine the flow and making sure that we have opportunities but we get to talk about a lot of positive we do things that are happening and then just being able to fine-tune those and so we're not duplicating efforts everywhere and that we're a little more consistent so it's it's we're making good progress It's a lot but it but it's it's coming it's it's something that I really enjoy participating in thank you okay now Mrs

Oaks I think and then Mrs nyar thank you so much for your presentation I think it's a great idea to have um access for parents to see what's going on sometimes you have working parents that might not always be able to be in the schools as much and hear about what's happening um so I think it's very worthwhile I am going to throw this out there though I think this is low hanging fruit and I think we as a a district I've just been thinking I hadn't thought about Competency Based grading as being an access and opportunity thing but it really is because when I'm thinking about extensions um you know if I have a child that's really Advanced and I want them to be challenged I don't necessarily want to have them do the

regular work and then do something on top of a I just want them to do the advanced work to begin with or if I have a child that's struggling um same thing like I kind of want them to be met where they are I think as as a district we need to be um putting some pedal to the metal when it comes to Competency Based grading because I think it's the only way we're really going to reach each student where they're at and help them progress at the rate that they need to and I recognize it's a that's a toall order and a lift for teachers but I know that there are ways to do it I know there are other districts that have done it and um I would love to see us go

in that direction like I said this is a good start and I I think it will provide some good forward momentum but really at the end of the day if a child is capable of doing calculus in ninth grade let's get them there yeah right I mean and if there is a child that's struggling because of a learning disability in fifth grade whether it's they have dyslexia or something else let's meet them where they are and I think the only way we can really effectively do that is if we Institute Competency Based grading as soon as possible so okay thank you Mrs naar so my comments are actually along the same lines as Mrs Oaks but just a slight variation um when you look at the Strategic initiative and before I dive in I also

want to acknowledge and thank you for the amount of work this there's a lot to unpack here and there's a lot of great great work here um looking at it with a critical eye when the Strategic initiative is providing advocacy for all students um focusing on multilanguage special ed Section 504 and advanced Learners I don't see an indicator that's specific enough for that that we're talking about every student has a successful learning pathway we have an indicator students have access to various learning modalities and programs to build positive relationships and life skills to me that focus is the positive relationships and life skills and and not necessarily helping the student um thrive in that learning pathway and so when we're looking at learning Pathways um not only and and looking at access to programs you

have an indicator later on CSD focuses on the needs of every CSD school and program when Distributing resources I like that I would love to see when we're looking at at um opportunities some of those opportunities may come in programs for example when we look at Advanced Learners right now we have advanced Learners that can take a test and go to salta at Sunrise or we have certain schools that have DLI but what about the child who is Advanced who goes to Willow Springs and maybe they live in an apartment and Mom doesn't have the time or the resources to drive that child to a different school and she's at work so we need to be thinking of that and thinking of programs we can Institute in the in the buildings of every neighborhood school

where if a child's Advanced at least we offer a advanced math class across the hall or something so I think I think it also has to do with programs and and looking at you know what what are what what indicator can we provide that more specifically speaks to that strategic initiative um I see um I see I see some areas in the data and the indicators for part of the Strategic initiative I just don't feel like I see it comprehensively for all of the Strategic initiative I can't pinpoint right now any bullet points that really point to how we're going to help with some of this so so those are from the success criteria that are in the the plan so I mean if we need to as a committee look at those again we

can look at those yeah I think that'd be great I think that would be great yeah we can put that on our list thank you so much you're welcome um okay and yeah I mean we can definitely talk about that as a committee but I'd also like to point out in the second strategic initiative um it's um focuses on the need of every CSD school and program when Distributing resources so that's kind of what came to my mind when you were talking so and and as um Miss Logan mentioned those are just word for word from the Strategic plan she's just kind of organized them into different categories and then is is um res you know U putting them with some of the things that we've been talking about working on so but I think

you know that's I mean that is something we've talked about a little bit and one of the first steps was to create that inventory of what is in place because that's that's a starting and we recognize that's a starting point not an ending point well and like like Nancy said like and I think maybe Karen referenced it too these things are very intertwined right this kind of overlaps with our high quality learning so kind of weeding out who's doing what so we're not duplicating our efforts but yeah we can certainly look at that okay yeah Mrs Nar you can go I I think that's great and when I outlined that indicator of school and program when Distributing resources that's what I was thinking is it would be nice in next steps right in next steps

to look at that so that's what I was looking for is to have that listed so that would be great perfect okay I think that is all so thank you so much for all the work and thank you committee for um all that you guys are doing it's been a good committee so thanks for letting me be on it yeah thank you so much okay the next item on the agenda is the proposal for Jordan High School National Naval defense Cadet Corps and it is the second reading possible action and Dr Bruce esler from Jordan high he's the principal will be presenting good evening um thank you again for allowing me to come talk about our proposal for a National enal Defense Cadet Corps um I'm hoping we can if the board sees fit we

can approve funding and development of this um this evening um in the previous presentation I kind of went through all the history of this program and again for those who don't know and and ndcc is part of the Navy RC program and that is our stated goal is to reach um at some point a full n jrc program the difference really is just in the funding um in my previous presentation I explained some of the history I'm coming back with some of the questions and that came out of board study session um included in your packets is kind of like a is a handout that has FAQs from the Navy it has information regarding the uh course proposed course descriptions there's four courses that you can take if you follow the entire program um but

I'm going to draw your attention to some of the things that the board asked for in from study session one was costs I've been able to drill down a little bit deeper into what initial starting costs would be again there's going to be a cost for an instructor so that's 1 ft in addition startup costs um we project $40,000 in startup costs this is a combination of purchasing a 100 uniforms at $300 per uniform um equipment which includes Color Guard gear Cadet gear Etc could be around $10,000 and then assuming so that's just year one that's just your initial startup costs additional cost would be um would come from student fees um Mr Sherwood and I created a example fee schedule that the board would then if this was approved fully approved in February um

but again it includes participation costs uniform costs for cleaning and upkeeping the uniforms meals travel if if they were to go on travel like all of our other groups and then miscellaneous for pictures gifts and awards like it's similar to most of our fee schedules if you look at that um in addition there was a request for a communication timeline Communications have worked with myself and uh the district to come up with here's our proposed timeline of activities of what if the board did approve this what would we be doing that's also in your handout the application process I'll draw attention to that um we've already spoken with it it would develop an application portal similar to DLI and the application would be they believe could be ready by November 15th which is when open

enrollment begins applications would be capped initially at 110 students um but we'd also work with the area manager Navy RC program to make sure we're not setting too high aspirations from day one so those are some that that could fluctuate but the application would have um provide options for students who are currently at Jordan or in our feeder system it would also allow students who are outside of um Jordan's boundary both within the district and outside the district to boundary in when permit and then we'd also have a dual enrolled option for students at Alta Brighton Corner in Hillcrest who want to stay at their boundary school but still participate in the program we'd look at um again if a student who participates in all four courses um we'd have to we'd have to be

strategic and our initial plan would be Naval science one and two would be offered in the mornings so either first or fifth period Naval science three and four would be offered in the afternoons fourth and eth period so again as we grow out um those were the the items the N or I'm sorry not the Navy you guys aren't the Navy um the board asked um again I I'm just here to speak on behalf of Jordan high my students and my community go Navy fear the goat go Jordan any questions okay thank you I just want to say thank you for Gathering all that information that is a lot um for you to put together so we appreciate that um so I think Mrs tingy had her hand up first anyone okay um I just

I just have a clarifying question but thank you for all this for answering our questions and for all this additional information and I noticed that um that on the kind of the uh frequently asked questions from the Navy website it mentions that student elig enrollment eligibility is that they be enrolled and attending a regular course of instruction in great 9 through 12 at the school hosting the unit but then but you mentioned further down that um there would be an option for students attending some of our other high schools to be dual enrolled does that meet the Navy's requirement I think that may be in talking with the Navy that may just be um a misnomer does that make sense every every jrrc program in the state um whether it's West High and the Salt

Lake City School District um Granger who has the Air Force um Taylorville who has the army all of them allow students within the district to participate and kind of how we described if we compare it to DLI we would be similar to our DLI model okay yeah but but they can do it not being full time full at the school all day correct okay yeah yeah thank you great catch okay Mr Edo did you have your hand so I just wanted to say thank you for um putting together this this pretty comprehensive uh uh request for information uh and I think that this is an amazing program but thank you for all the work that you put into this welcome Mrs Oaks I'm really excited for you guys and I'm very happy that our students

and other high schools will be able to participate I know it's a a lot of juggling and a lot of figuring out details for you guys but I do think in the end it's going to really strengthen the district as a whole so I'm so excited I wish you the best of luck with this it's gonna be awesome thank you Mrs nbar I'd like to make a motion I love that idea that is great i' like to make a motion to approve the proposal for Jordan High School National Naval defense Cadet corpse with a thank you to Dr Bruce eser for all of his work and getting thank you together I'd like to second the motion okay perfect we have a motion in a second is there any discussion to the motion I I just

want to also say I'm very excited I know I had the question I didn't know we'd go straight to a motion like this so but I am very excited and very grateful for the effort and the work that that you and others have put into this and agree with the other comments that have been said okay and then I do want to add my comment that I'm just really excited like when I read this communication timeline I don't know I just got more and more excited as I read through it so anyway I'm I'm really thrilled about this program at Jordan I think it's going to be amazing so for our students and for the school so the question yes Mrs peton um do you have an initial response I don't know why mine's loud

um do you have an initial response from student body have they heard any any whisperings of this and have an initial response that's a great question all's been positive even initially when we were starting to investigate this so when we initially brought up the possibility with our student council they were all very supportive and I told student SP spos and other leaders that hey we're looking at um get we got accepted and we just need to wait we needed to wait for the board's formal approval that it's just it's all been positive I think everyone's ready to to embrace the Navy fear the goat if you haven't learned that get on Anapolis website and understand why the go go it's important for the Navy okay um but uh yeah we're all we're all in we're

all in we're all in and I just want to mention that I've actually had um someone contact me that would really like to do a grant for a specific program in Canyon's district and I feel like this might be a good fit so I'll get people talking to the right people and we'll see if an outside business source will be able to help us out hey we'd love it superintendent Robert thank you Dr echler so we may have printed invitations to the kickoff I don't know these just showed up on my desk up here somebody somebody put them up here I don't know I think the motion was tonight and not next board meeting I'm gonna say so we'll hand these out to the board and anyone here tonight in the public but um so

uh we're going to kick this off on the 11th at the home football game so and we've already had uh some of the Navy officers as you know came to a previous football game which was exciting to engage with them and continue this great partnership so we'll hand these out Bruce and okay thank you thank you superintendent and Mr millerberg would like to say something Bruce as I read through what you uh gave us you really had me with the first question what does the nmcc program do I feel like we have a great need in our nation right now to promote patriotism and continue developed informed and responsible citizens developed respect for a constructed Authority developed a high degree of personal honor self-reliance in individual discipline and Leadership provides information on on the military

services as a possible career promotes community service develops leadership potential provides an alternative to gangs promotes High School completion and provides incentive to live healthy and drug- free I mean my gosh what more could we ask for um thank you so much for going out and speaking this out and bringing that to our community and making Canyons a better place for people to live thank you um thank you Mont um Mrs naar okay well everyone's giving additional comments so I just I appreciate the fact that last reading I asked you about a communication timeline and making sure we're getting the word out and I really loved that addition to your plan and saw how much effort went into that and really excited about that so thank you okay I think we have all the comments

um so we will go to the vote so the motion is to approve the proposal for the Jordan High School National Naval defense Cadet Corp program so all in favor say I I I I any opposed okay that program passes unanimously and just in time for our event okay great and I just want to say we're doing really well on time let's just keep this up board please half of them aren't listening but let's keep up our time schedule okay the next item on the agenda is item C is policy 100.0 2 um Board of Education ethics and conduct guidelines new policy 100.6 communication with Board of Education and discussion of board education flowchart this is a first first reading and Jeff Christensen assistant legal council will present thank you president shill uh because we

had our student advisory Council here tonight and that was a great opportunity to see them um so this would typically be in a study session for discussion but some of these items you've seen before uh back in our August or in our July summer meeting the board had a Roundtable discussion where there was some items um suggested about um board ethics and so the policy committee was assigned to take a look at um our existing policy and bring back some recommendations so what you see in this revision is um what we've done in the policy we've already had existing guidelines for for the Board of Education that govern board ethics and so we've modified the statement as as outlined on this slide and that's really the policy which outlines that board members are governed by

um the public officers and employees ethics act and then as elected official board members should maintain and demonstrate high standards of conduct and then the policy then refers to the conduct guidelines which I'll outline here in just a moment so this is the policy and then these are the ethics guidelines and a lot of these we had in an initial um format in our in our previous guidelines but um the members of the board are on the committee policy committee discussed these to bring forward um to the board so the first is the board exercises its statutory Authority in an open session of a public board meeting when taking official action and it outlines how the board will do that that they don't uh board members don't have authority um as individuals and they take

official action in a duly scheduled board meeting so that's the first um ethics guideline and then they Foster working relationships with other board members and then the third bullet was focusing on strategic policy and governance rather than oper operational tasks um that are the duty of the superintendent and administration the second one was to represent the board with dignity and integrity again abiding by the public uh and employees ethics act avoiding conflicts of interest and then we talked about uh respecting confidentiality ality of information that is protected by our governing State statutes um the government records and access management Act and the open and public meetings act which the board receives training on annually and then uh pursuing accountability with honesty good faith and reasonable confidence and in terms of evaluation and measurement this is

a new one guarding the public trust by spending all School funds to benefit all children and then uh these are some notes that are new preparing to listen and value the opinions of others regarding board meetings and these were recommendations from um board members on the committee about um preparing um for board meetings speaking when recognized by the board president and respectful review of comments and maintaining an orderly dialogue and valuing contributions and then the last is to ensure that material complaints are brought forward to the attention of the superintendent and Boards members in a timely manner and then reach out to school Community by developing relationships with Community organizations and leaders communicating with constituents staff and all elements of the community and representing the needs of all students so all of those are out

in a board of Ethics conduct guideline and so you'll have the policy which refers to the ethics act and then this conduct guideline that would be um associated with the policy the other policy for first reading is communication with the Board of Education uh this uh grew out of a desire to um address if patrons students or employees or patrons uh engage with the board um through verbal or written communication um or written communication so this policy outlines um that the board may receive communication and public comment in an open public board meeting and then all Communications received by the board um whether in written or electronic format or subject to Gramma and maybe subject to public disclosure so we're stating our um legal obligations related to those records and then the next um part

of the policy outlines two regulations that one just outlines um the requirements for public comment as outlined in State Statute and then another regulation that uh protects members of the community or patrons or students or others that would come forward with a communication to the board if they um felt some form of retaliation and as a result of communicating with the board member those issues can be refer referred to the district's compliance officer in our district policy of non-discrimination we outline that any policy violations that deal with harassment or discrimination are forwarded to the compliance officer um in terms of employees and students but this is specifically if a individual communicates with a board member so those once they're referred to the district compliance officer if there's an investigation or negative consequences or result then

that will be forwarded to the district compliance office with a report to the board in Clos session both of these policies are for first reading and I can respond to questions and then I also have a flowchart to discuss which is not a policy but simply an informational item okay board are there any questions or discussion to this policy U Mr edel so I just want to comment on the uh protections for communications with members of the Board of Education um while I feel that we've got a great District every now and then you have people who are concerned to come talk to us which is um one of the things that I'm excited about for this particular portion to give them that uh that assurance that it's okay to come forward to the board

with whatever issues they have um because whether you're a student parent or employee uh the board is here to represent um and so I just wanted to speak to that and and the importance and again not that we have a particular issue but I just want to give that Assurance to people to say uh you know each and every one of us um want to hear from you uh and we value what you have to say and you're not going to get in trouble for talking to us which hopefully you haven't but yes thank you U Mrs Oaks so I appreciate here there's some good content um if we can go back a few slides to 100.2 on um represent the Board of Education dignity and integrity and on the second bubble where it talks

about avoiding conflicts of interest I actually um when we grew up at usba training we got into a conversation with some other um board members and other districts about um code of conduct and and what some of their language was I um and Davis School District shared with me theirs and forwarded it to me and for this in particular this section I I really like what they had to say I feel like it was a little bit more specific and um so it it's in first person but what it how it reads is I will avoid any conflict of interest or appearance of impropriety that could result from my position and will not use my elected position for personal gain special interests or partisan influence so that would be my request if it's possible for

the policy committee to I'm happy to Pro provide the language so that you can um use that as reference but I think it it flushes out a little bit more especially in light of um how much of an issue um caucuses and some of the other political influences with the role of Schoolboard members have become I would I personally would really appreciate to see that in our code of conduct um the other thing is um I'm just wondering I I know it's implied and it's understood but I'm wondering if for the public if it's worthwhile to see that one of the roles that we as board members have as a group is um that of course our role of making sure that the administration and um you know whether it's a superintendent or the business

administrator that we hold them accountable in their roles and their responsibil ities and duties and that as a board that that's that's part of what we oversee I don't know I think it it might be worthwhile to put in there okay thank you are there any other suggestions or comments U Mr Miller going to be thinking on my feet or my feet I guess Jak may be on this one maybe sure shooting from the hip a little bit but I'm going back a few months ago and we had a fairly uh pointed discussion and closed session and I'm not going into the issues of Clos session but I will come come out with one of the items that was suggested or talked about and that was to maintain uh transparency amongst board members the superintendent

was uh asked actually he suggested that he provide board members uh a report of what items are discussed with other board members so that all board members could know what those discussions are I was told at that time that we couldn't do that until we got policy in place but I don't see anything in there that would reflect that I don't believe that policy needs to be in place just a a procedure that happens on a regular basis so that was not part of our discussion when we reviewed this policy I do recall that um request made to the superintendent and that's something we could take a look at whether that makes sense in this communication this is really communication to the board so policy so I believe it has to be so it could

you know you could include that one of the things I'll address in a moment is the Board of Education handbook and if that's something that wants to be included as part of the board's handbook and communicating with the superintendent we have our our initial policy in this section is the board's relationship with the superintendent which is really governed by Statute so that might be something we could take a look at in terms of the policy committee I agree it doesn't necessarily need to be in policy but it needs to be so so the policy committee did not discuss that at all because this was brought up a while ago no you guys did not discuss it I'm just curious not in the context of this particular policy note yeah that that issue that issue will

not drop okay any other comments or suggestions okay I think that's all on that and I do want to add my thanks I think there's a lot of really good um things in this conduct guidelines so thank you for your work on this I think we can go on to the next yeah item so this is not a policy item this is a report for the to the board um that's informational uh we discussed in um again in the Board of Education Roundtable developing a flowchart to to address um how Communications to the board are subject to really issues as they're reported to the Board of Education um this was circulated in a study session um not at our previous meeting but two meetings ago and there was some feedback um we were requested to

adapt into this document a after review in the policy committee the recommendation from the policy committee is this would be included in the Board of Education handbook um for for use um what we added to this um graphic was really to illustrate that if a constituent um were to contact a board member regarding an individual issue the board member could then um ask the question whether the issue had been brought forward to the school principal and and then through that they could refer that um constituent to the school to address the issue and then and as you can see kind of on the right hand of the graphic there is a a line where issues that at that point um the board member can refer it to the superintendent um or uh if if need

be the the patron can then um also have it go down to the principal and the board member could refer that issue with both at two to the superintendent or the principal and to be addressed and then you know the principal once there they have an issue they can result and consult with District administ Administration to respond and and one of the elements we were asked to address is really incorporating a feedback loop from reviewing issues back to the board which is um illustrated by the arrows down at the bottom and then there was some clarity um just in some of the other Graphics the the idea being here to really sort of set forth in the board handbook how issues that are brought to the board um the full board or a board member

how those can be addressed and then we also have in our um in a lot of our policies we have the duty to report which includes um and there was a recommendation to add both employee professionalism and conduct issues in terms of UPAC and ethics issues and that was added in the middle to report when we have those issues that come up whether through the administration or otherwise um again this is simply for informational purposes uh with the intent of it going in the board handbook okay um Mrs Oaks has a question okay so I know this came up before as a conversation and I don't see okay so in my trainings as a new board member it was kind of drilled into our head that if a member of the public had a concern

that we should not call up and bother the principle that we should just take it right to the superintendent but this does not necessar say that it it says that if they haven't talked to the principal that we could pick up the phone and call the principal I just want to be clear whether or not that that's what we as a board want yeah and so that issue came up in our discussion Mrs Ting do you want to respond she was during our meeting so yeah I I um I brought up that same feedback and it hasn't been adjusted yet but we need to clarify that really what the board member does is refer the patron to contact the principal and not the board member contact principal right otherwise I think it could be misconstrued

that we're jumping in we're micromanaging a principle which is never our role right to do that okay so I I think that does need to be clarified I really appreciate you putting in the duty to report I'm wondering if I I'm just thinking as a new board member it would have been helpful for me to understand that a little bit more I don't know if we need a reference whether it's on critical policies that a board can go to to understand what that duty to report looks like or if we mention UPAC and and law enforcement um I mean I think it's pretty rare for most new board members to even know what UPAC is takes a minute to flush that out and so I would love for that to be a little clearer yeah

we can certainly take a look at that and and then as the board handbook I know it's under development if there needs to be like a one-page uh written description regarding the graphic to help further clarify that might be um something that we could initially look at I know you've got several board members currently working on that handbook that could work and and add that to this which I think it would be helpful to have some of those details outlined in the handbook well and I actually I I like the idea of this going before the public so people I to me if I'm a a l member of the community and I'm looking at this this explains to me in kind of like a quick visual way what the role of a board member

is and what they should be doing and who they should be talking to if they have a question and what the nature of the question is that so I think getting this right will help a lot of things in the end I could save time actually okay thank you Mrs nyar so that's something we brought up in policy committee quite a bit is if if this is forward facing to the public or or if it's to the board members and part of the handbook um you know the I think this is a good illustration of how communication works with the board members and how it should work but it doesn't encapsulate all the roles of the board this is just a a guide to the communication so you know um the roles of the board

of course making policy all you know setting tax there's so many other things so I think that um what this is and what we've talked about is that board handbook is a guideline for board members to understand their their role best and how to perform and then the policy regarding board ethics helps us be accountable to a code of ethics right amongst all of us that we are accountable we're saying yes you know this if if if we don't if you don't do that then you're breaking policy I think it'd be difficult to encapsulate some of these things into policy because it can be in some instances I just think it'd be difficult you know to Police Every interaction right of of a board member so some of those things there's so many different roles

we do and committee work and things that a handbook makes a lot more sense than having all the roles of the board and policy and of course we're Bound by state legislation too which outlines our duties okay thank you anyone else have any comments okay okay thanks for your work um I I do have the same yeah concern as Amanda with that board member first and principal because maybe we just add Patron and that refers Patron or parent or ref we we'll correct that yeah I mean but I do like also the idea of maybe writing it out step by step I anyway that'd be great yeah okay thank you so much we will look forward to next meeting continuing this okay um so the next item is item D the board strategic indicator and

goals second reading possible action and superintendent Rick Robbins will present this thank you President shill also want to thank Jeff and Paula and Dr eser for being here that was great so I don't know how much you want to get into this the slide deck um we this will be the second time we've reviewed this but I wanted to highlight just some of the requested information on on some of the data so we took a little bit more of a deep dive um into uh some of the achievement data uh and what that looks like uh specifically with um grade distribution and so as well as attendant so I don't know if you want to spend more time on one slide or if there if you want to just do some Q&A on that but

I I think it was interesting I I know monz highlighted this a few times to to dig a little deeper and disaggregate the data to understand you know sometimes it's you know it's easy to hide in percentages or like you said to ask some of the hard questions about uh some of our our more impacted students and um and one clarification too I know we've had different slides over the last two years on trying to Define chronically absent uh so between our research and assessment folks how Laura and ISD uh we're settling on chronically absent as being uh absent 10% or more and severe absent ISM would be 20% but you know even at that I mean it those number of days missed by students are one too many I I think you know this

is something that we want to pay close attention to and you can see how that's how that's disaggregated um with some of our impacted students compared to the entire population as a whole in our secondary schools so um and then of course grade distribution so looking at our students disaggregated uh we have a lot of work to do as as we know the pandemic had uh just a horrendous impact on on many of our students especially with credits uh and I think this is a point of emphasis that we want to continue to look at how we engage these students their families um tier one instruction but also tier three you know Credit Recovery systems that that we have in place so I don't know I'll president I'll turn it back to you if there's

questions hopefully that dat to kind of help clarify some of those issues there's one thing too I want to speak to on ACT writing when we get to that but okay are there any questions on these covered Mrs T sorry I have lots of questions today um so last meeting when you presented this I was actually participating remotely and and the sound was not the best and I think I asked the question about the F grades and where it says a full year and and I'm not recommending we do it one way or the other because I realize being consistent in how we measure things is what's most important but I just want to for my understanding does that mean a student has to fail all four quarters of a year and a full credit

or can they fail a quarter of a credit and pass three quarters of it yeah so per per course per student I think Tom or I don't know who can help answer that per course so would a course be first half of ela second half of ela or each quarter each quarter each so each grade period count as one okay and and that it's um okay that makes sense so so they could receive three quarters of a credit for 10th grade ELA but fail one of them and and still show up in this data y okay okay any other questions okay I think we can keep moving on okay so um one of the things moving on I want to highlight a couple of things on our uh our goals and our indicators um with

with ACT writing we ran into a little bit of a snag with this uh with Act and the contract with the state so um to do writing to do the writing part of the ACC uh if we stay with the state contract it needs to be with with the state contract right so you can't offer act doesn't allow us to just offer writing on its own it it has to be with the the rest of the ACT to do that um we would need to offer it in the fall uh and to do that to accomplish that then that means uh we would have to offer the entire act with the writing portion at our expense so uh that's obviously problematic I think the act in its entirety is 50 to 60 I can't remember

Tom do you know the cost oh 83 total okay so um that's an at an expense to think about not that we can't do that um but we may want to consider a different a different platform all you know all together uh the state um is not going to support uh offering writing uh in the in the spring so I have my own opinions about that but we're not getting any traction with that so so I still think think and believe that um when we're thinking about our portrait of a scholar and all the goals that we have uh in the Strategic plan that writing still uh is a major component to that and as I listened to Mont read and talk about you know those foundational elements to our our Junior Roc program you

could easily apply you know how does a student write about that experience you know across almost every one of those elements so um I still think this is an important piece to the puzzle going forward in measuring success in the district um maybe it's not act you know uh I I think a measurement that has a common language that our parents and our students understand is still important I think sometimes in education we we go off into these different assessment abysses that no one really understands and and act as I've said before it has its issues right it's it's not necessarily aligned to Utah core um and I get that and its Norm reference but it's still at the end of the day is about assessing our students ability in a short amount of time

to come up with a short essay to determine whether or not they they have that skill which I think is very critical to the future of our society frankly so I'll leave you with that we can come back with more options at a future date if you'd like um we can still this is all new information from uh usbe just in the last day actually so uh but we'll continue to pursue this if you want so I I do think from past conversations that the board liked this idea so maybe you can come back with options or what yeah what you guys can come up with instead and then um I just wanted to highlight to Big shout out to Susan Edwards and our external relations team but especially her because she really hones in

on on SEC participation and um you can see uh we do have a system now in place that we can track this and so this she was able to pull this data together from last year so you know this is awesome to have this right so a big shout out to her um but and I you know as I look at that data um I I remember probably really the first week or two that I was um after I I came to Canyons I remember Nancy talking to me just about uh the importance of sec's and canyons and that you know this is such a foundational piece to our district and the culture in our district when it comes to engaging our parents and our our communities and so I think highlighting this and making

this part you know now that we actually can see kind of that data and track that over time and really understand that that you know that really furthers the mission in the district and that in that tenant of community engagement so I I really this is great I'm I'm really grateful uh that Susan was able to pull this together in such a short time to get this up there for you tonight a lot of work make that happen but you know that's now part of the plan going forward if the board decides it to be so so any other questions on any the other slides um yes Mrs Nar okay so I I love to see that percentage so high with sec's and I share a a lot of passion about the school Community Council

and the level of Engagement that happens there and the impact parents can have as well as not only that developing relationships with their faculty and principles and I know initially when we met as an a committee for indicators we we chatted a little bit about the opportunity we have to gauge other types of community participation I was just thinking of this today when I dropped my kids off at elementary school the jagathon is this Friday and we have an ability at a younger Elementary School level right to engage the commity with some of these activities we know that as the as the kids you know have their parents participate as well in these things sometimes it really helps bridge the gap between you know missing home and being at school and and feeling like their

parents are part of of the school community and and these things you know like art night and some of these things um I think that's what really can set us apart as the public school as the neighborhood school as the community center so I would love to see s um gauge other activities also with Community engagement um do you think feel like that's possible I know we talked about QR codes and different what are your thoughts no that's a great Point H within uh an app that we're using at the administrative level we're trying really to identify all of those Partnerships they're as you said there's many right and so uh trying to create a system of a way to track that that that's really it's just you know devil in the details right so

um but I I think it's possible we're just not there yet but I think at some point we you know at minimum be able to report to the board you know what that looks like so that that work is underway but we're not there we're not ready yet right and I do remember um Wendy da was saying there's something there that she's able she was able to track certain we have it we have we have basically it's just able we we put the event in and then we have it there and then if you attend you can mark that you basically were there or that you can submit that you attended to that event but that's pretty much what we have right now so it's very rudimentary it's not I don't think it's in a

place yet that I would feel confident that I could throw that up for you and say hey here's a real clear depiction of everything that's going on in the district but I we can get there yeah well and there's some things that we do ticket sales right to to the athletic games and play and so so some of those we we have that access I had a couple of other questions here um on the on the writing portion when we're looking at different opportunities for our students to communicate to us through writing right that they've been able that they're College ready and and that we are targeting those portraits of a canyon scholar it would be really it would be really interesting if if if we had writing assignments like what you know just tossing

out an idea I'm sure I'm sure members of your cabinet and other chairs have better ideas than this but you know even if there was a writing assignment before they are promoted from middle school to high school and then before graduation before they get their cap and gown if they could write and communicate to us how they learn to be an innovator through their CL you know where where they are giving examples or or talk about and engaging collaborative project so we develop the prompts so we develop the prompts but it's actually specific to those five attributes that we want them to have at the end I like that I think that would be really neat and we could even have it at the end of elementary and middle and high and I think that

would be a great indicator because we would be able to read you know how the students have internalized those things so and the teachers can help them through that and then as if that's the indicator and the teachers are aware of it I think it o helps us right like reinforce that that is indeed happening you know which I think goes along with our strategic plan so this is great um super excited I I wanted to comment I really appreciate I know I'm on the emergency um preparedness committee and I really love how I've noticed that this is an emergency take action that's been in a lot of our communication lately and I really love that that we're we're educating you know parents and community those things mean so great job on that and then

my last thing really quick is just noticing that the attendance issue that there's a greater issue with lwi income and multilingual and um what our thoughts are about reaching out to those populations that have the biggest so last year if you recall the parent nights that Wendy's team did and I'm sure you know Paulo will pick up the ball here too but um there's a lot of parent engage engagement involved in that you know and I I think when you think about all the supports in in human centered supports as well as access an opportunity it really starts there um I don't think there's a silver bullet to this issue it's you know Nancy asked me a question about um our our legislative lunch tomorrow about one of the questions legislators has is well you

know what what have we done for learning loss right in recovery and you know when she first asked me I I kind of I was like wow you know that's that's a hard thing right I don't know if if legislators really realize that it it's not a one-size fits-all that this is a long game and and the pandemic did tremendous damage that way and so really it's this kind of this overall whole child approach I mean it's it's not it's not centered on one thing it's academic recovery it's Wellness recovery it's Mental Health social it's all these things that are playing into that to that equation and you know it's a little Dawning I mean it it sometimes feels like we're almost becoming all things to everyone all the time right but at the same

time recognizing that you know a third of our students are chronically absent like getting at the root cause of those issues to help address that to to re-engage them and and I think in the end it's a it's a combin of us being the choice you know the School of Choice that kids want to be to school that they want to feel like they've engaged and that they have that experience and that's what it's for but there's also compliance to that right like we need support from the legislature and our parents and everyone uh in its everyone in that entirety to say hey it you know you got to be back in school that that's where we're going as if we if we want our democracy to succeed um we got we got to educate

our kids that means it's the law to be in school so it's a to me it's a kind of a two-way street all of us have got to contribute to that equation so yeah that's true and I know we have counselors that reach out you know when a child dabs and over a certain amount of time and I appreciated hearing how how many home visits were happening during coid which that is a great thing to bring up with legislators too because we have all the tracking on that I wonder about having even peer mentors assigned to them that you know there's a little message sent hey missed you at school today I think finding um personal connection with a peer and then also you know obviously their counselor or a teacher but getting messages um

to them that they're missed and that they're wanted they're at school and they have a person the schools I visited today all have that in place they're all reaching out to parents um probably ad nauseum parents are getting sick of hearing from us yeah but that's okay right I mean it's it's it's our their kids our kids yeah and we I think you know that's the end goal is to re-engage and get kids back to school and you know getting back to life so so I would love to hear in a future meeting just about the peer mentor programs that we have and how we're outreaching that way love to hear about it awesome you can do that Amanda do you have a question so um I'm just wondering whether or not when we're talking

about um Community engagement I'm guessing that you guys probably have this conversation but is it possible for us to track PTA membership so I think we do track volunteer rates and hours with PTA I if that I think that's part of our equation that's part of it that is part of that report yeah PTA hours but do we have membership oh I don't know about membership is that included I know Susan Susan gives us a report of the PTA membership hey one thing I know that Jeff and I are 100% members in every school I get their emails which is awesome and Andrew is too I think y I am for like 10 schools but but we're challenging you all schools y so but part of why I asked this is in talking to Betty

Shaw about it like it sounds like since we are no longer able to do PTA membership during registration um it's and and that's know on that well yeah I think that that's a compliance issue that needed to happen but it's really impacted PTA membership as a result because yes it's an unintended consequence and I I'd love to see like if there if we can monitor that and push it upward and anyway well so this is just me speaking and I don't want to speak for other administrators or the board on this but I mean thinking about the goal and the premise of that whole discussion was to try to limit the amount you know the fire holes that parents drink from when we do registration right and and I got there were as you all

did lots of compliments hey this was way streamlined this was great but having said that I don't recall any complaints about specifically about the P PTA opportunity to register and so you know maybe that's one that we rethink and we add it back in place because that that's such a big part of our district and and I you know I I don't think any of us want to be part of an equation to lower our PTA participation I mean we we we not only are they a key role but we desperately need them in our schools they play such a key role so I you know I think we take a look at that again and and my thought would be we add it back well I'll be honest as a parent I I didn't

realize that was coming off of registration so when I went to register my kids this year I was like where's the PTA thing and I went back and I was like searching through screen after screen after screen and I was like I don't know how to sign up for the PTA it was kind of this weird thing and yes at back to school night they have a table but it's in an electronic age like hours it's not streamlined anymore right and and it's also for me it's always served as a very visceral reminder like this is my role as a parent I need to be volunteering I need to be helping out in my kids classrooms so anyway I think we ought to rethink it probably and to keep track of whether or not it's

waning or if it's growing well anything I think I I think you'd all agree anything we can do to strengthen our PTA in Canyons that that's been you know such an important part of our success and I think we want to strengthen it not weaken it so Mrs T um yeah thank you for bringing up PTA and and I I think it is worth having more conversation but I think we need to be cautious because they are a separate organization and they're governed they have their own governing rules as well as as ours and and I think that was one of the issues with with the registration is kind of that trying to keep that separation um as school Community councils are official organizations and entities in our schools and in our district yeah and

PTA is just a recognized organization that we cooperate with and I I fully agree that we need their help and we you know they make such a huge difference in our schools but we would just need to be very very careful um to maintain that separation as you know that so that both organizations are still very comfortable in in in that relationship I'm wondering too to your point Nancy if Dan could we could look into that because does that open the question or the door to well if it's one organization then do we provide a registration link to all that are in a similar you know right because we are of prohibited from like like offering aren't we from for CA and you know promoting promoting that type of a thing and and promoting it

I think we just need to be very look at it very carefully is what I'm saying okay yeah we'll take that back okay the other slide I noticed was was the graduation rate so do you want to cover so um still going big on this one but mon kind of mon kind of tempered my my passion a little bit so i' I'm suggesting we still Target 100% but we we target it 2% annually for five years that that adds up really easy it's easy to remember I think that's very doable um but I I think we should hold ourselves to 100% within five years I I think that's a great goal and that gives us something to really as we're looking at all of these systems I I think that gives us a great goal

to really Target and so that I think from the feedback that we got from our last meeting I think that's kind of direction we want to go if that's what you all want to do okay Mrs petson I appreciate that you made that change because if you have 100% you're always trying to catch up it's always a negative you're not there you're not there you're not there but when we have 91% and it having a 2% annual increase is a doable measurement then you can show progress and it's reaffirming so I I really appreciate that this is a lot more realistic and uh we still can do it no one said you can't get 100% but this this is a more positive view on on our progress towards that because it is very difficult because

once you hit 100 it's so hard to keep it's gonna be hard to hold so every little bit's going to be great so thank you for making that change I I really appreciated that this T thank you sorry another thought on this and I I agree I like biting it of in more um chewable bites but um and and I realize that graduation rate is is calculated by a national and a state driven formula which we can't mess with that but I'm just wondering if when the administration reports to the board on this number they could kind of add in some of those students that have received those alternate diplomas or the the certificate of completion so so that we can we can have a a more realistic picture of each individual group of students

and and how when they're exiting our system you know that they really have something to show for the time they've spent with us great Point Nancy and we've disaggregated everything else we should definitely we yeah that's an oversight we should certainly disaggregate this data that's probably at the end of the day matters the most to the kids right so yeah okay anyone else on this okay are we ready to make a motion or do we want to wait and discuss this one more time board this is second reading possible action Mrs nyar I'd be in favor of waiting since we're still figuring out what to do for that writing portion since we're not going to be able to do the ACT writing portion and and I also like the thought of having I I love

nany's point I think that would be great to have that included in the data any GRE or other certificates that kids are completing at the end of high school as well as um as well as some of the community engagement pieces so I'd love for it to come back another time okay anyone else okay it looks like we'll discuss this one more time thank you superintendent thanks you guys okay uh the next item is the CSD differentiated diplomas second reading possible action this is also superintendent oh Tom okay oh sorry it does says do sorry I was reading the wrong line it says Dr Amber rodri lanward but we will have Mr Tom Sherwood director of high get get back here oh I was like why are you leaving okay thank you so I I

was on this committee with Amber and uh we've been working on some things um how do I change this slide oh that'll work quicker there we go so uh we reviewed the new proposals to the board at the last meeting and we did get some feedback about a couple of items um the advanced diploma just to review um we changed it to this all of the requirements that the standard diploma currently has in addition to that they need to do one additional math beyond the standard diploma so that would be four years of math or four years of science because each each of those are minimum of three required by the state board and or be a CT pathway concentrator one of those one of those three things in order to qualify for the advanced

we added a GPA it used to be uh 25 and we raised it to 3 and then we added an attendance portion to that I know um Mont brought up the concerns with attendance and we all know that there are all kinds of reasons why kids could have a um you know tragedy or family situation where uh you know they may need some uh Grace in that and I'll talk about that in the next slide and then for the honors diploma we upped it to instead of or to do um four years of math and um all of the science that they complete has to be lab-based Sciences which essentially just um discounts Earth Systems as one of the three that can count or some of our elective Sciences it's essentially chemistry biology physics or

AP sciences and then um and then or I think that's wrong because they don't all have to be a CT path oh sorry and one of the following three either a CTE path concentrator which is 1.5 CTE credits in the same area of focus um two years of World Language or a seal of biliteracy and uh I was uh conversing with Rick and we wanted to also add or an additional 1.5 credits of uh Fine Arts um so there's 1.5 credits required um for the standard diploma so this would be an addition to that um this would include students who are focusing in Visual Arts or Performing Arts so I feel like that's a a great addition for those students it's hard to especially for those Arts kids it's stough to fit all the classes

they want especially if they're in band choir things like that to to meet all these requirements and take four years of those programs so I think that's a great addition and then a minimum GPA of 3.5 five and a cumulative attendance over their four years of high school of 95% on and I forgot to add both of these we're not we took away the The Benchmark score of the act and we just changed it to that they have to have participated in act and then uh at the last meeting we asked about the appeals process um this is what we have been doing with appeals we've been doing the appeals for years since we uh changed to the um Advanced honors the diplomas um typically what happens is when a student applies when a student

believes they should get the honor to advance diploma and learns that they didn't they just have to send an appeal to the committee and they review that appeal and it can be for various reasons um each year the appeals committee um consists of uh administrator from instructional supports the district counseling coordinator Melissa one high school administrator and one high school counselor and they sit in on all those appeals to maintain some consistency um and they review those applications and make determinations and in my experience they've always been very um merciful in their in their appeals I mean we do have lots of reasons why students um asked for those and I think most of the time those have been approved so you guys have any other questions about the proposals for the two diploma Pathways

okay sure um Mrs Oaks and then is it Mrs neyar oh oh Mr Ed sorry and then we'll go to the side Mr millerberg was there anyone else over there okay Mr M okay so thank you so much for making these adjustments and I'm thrilled about the idea of having an ore for the Fine Arts pathway they're really some of those kids that come out of those programs that have I I know for certain for instance at Corner Canyon like once you decide to do that like you have assigned classes and you're expected to take a lot of courses I would hate for those kids to be left out of here because the level of dedication and work that they go to to to participate in those programs are amazing and a lot of those

kids end up in in incredible academic programs for universities because they recognize the sacrifice that they've they've made in high school so I think it's really wise I I appreciate Mitchell ateno bringing that to our attention um after he attended last board meeting so anyway I am full support of this with that adjustment I think it's going to be great it's going to encourage our kids to do wonderful things I agree I agree completely and I think PE people underestimate the amount of scholarships available in the arcs I mean I think there's more full-rise scholarships for marching band than baseball you know so well we have a recent um Alum from Corner Canyon that um Miss neber and I have both mentioned him before but you know he he received did job offer initially as

an intern with NASA and the reason that he stood out amongst hundreds and hundreds of other candidates across the country is because of his experience playing jazz and they said you will be able to come up with Solutions on the flag which TJ does and he was recently hired on full-time and so he's a he's a credit to the program that he came from from Corner Canyon um so I I think it's a very wise addition I think it's great great okay thank you Mr Edo this is a question not a request okay um is this something that the student advisory Council can review as far in terms of requirements just ask for their input yeah yeah that's great I love it too Mr milberg okay um bear with me here a little bit let's

say I'm working on an advanced diploma and I don't want to take extra math and I don't want to take extra science and the CP CTE pathway coord uh concentrator really isn't something that I can get into but I have a certificate of bilingu I can't have it well on the other side on the honors diploma I can either do the CT pathway or I can do a World Language or I can have a certificate of being bilingual but you also have to math have the math and the science not the or okay but math or science on the advance is or and or and or yes on your honors diploma it seems to have a World Language or the certificate of being bilingual are equal to e you're not wrong that's it's as far

as the parallel equivalency we we aren't being consistent with the two if we if we're saying a CT concentrator is a pathway to advance we should probably add the two credits of World Language or the sealed by literacy or the 1.5 additional rart if we're going to be consistent I I just feels inconsistent it does I agree yeah fair fair fair fair point I don't know you got so many ores in the middle yeah no I think Point well taken I and I and I don't think anybody's going to oppose those changes I think those are all and that and that used to be the requirement was the that was the most significant thing that gave a student Advanced diploma was the 2.0 of a World Language and there's there's no reason we can't add

that back on there and then additionally add the Seal of B literacy and the the Arts concentrated so I think those are both great suggestions thank you okay anyone else Mrs tingi um so again just kind of help me help me understand this so the um CTE pathway concentrator 1.5 credits and in a standard diploma CTE is one credit but the pathway concentrator is 1.5 credits in the same field correct and the standard could be in two different fields yeah it could be three completely different classes they take yeah and then um and then in the honors so it says math one extra credit so fourth year of math right and then all science courses must be lab based or Advanced science how many courses is that because the standard diploma has two courses and

then advaned you choose either an extra course in math or science so so a standard diploma is three science science credits and two of them have to be core and one can be alternative and and and the two core um only one of them necessarily is lab based if you did Earth Science and then biology and then took let's say um botany and genetics only one of those would have been a lab science which would have been the the biology right so the additional isn't additional class it's just the fact that it's a lab class fact that all three of the Sciences were a lab course okay thank you and and I do also like the addition as of the option for the Fine Arts as an you know an equivalent to to the other

options and were when we were looking at this with the additional Math and Science especially for the honors we were looking at some of the requirements for the opportunity scholarship which is the state has used to replace the Regents and it's a pretty high bar for the opportunity scholarship they have to take either an apce or IB English Math and Science to get the opportunity scholarship and we just felt like maybe was too high of a bar and we'd have see the numbers go down significantly so we're still kind trying to get students to take a high number of math courses all lab based science um to to more align with the the new opportunity scholarship program so okay well you just took my question because I was going to ask you if you guys

looked at the opportunity scholarship because when we started talking about this in high quality learning we I thought that we did bring up that oh we're going to try to align it more but it's not really aligned so I guess oh it's I mean I don't think we we could align it it's just to take to take three for every student to get the honors diploma to take a it's not honors it's an AP IB or CE English an AP IB or CE science and an AP IB or CE math is a so it's too it's it would be too hard I think it's something maybe we could grow to but but if we want to set the bar we could set it equal with the we could discuss that it was discussed we just

felt like we have we have we have H schools who don't have teachers that are I think we have only two or three of our high schools that have CE science teachers are hard to come by and the AP courses are pretty pretty challenging so it's just a matter if we want to where we want to hit the bar so okay well I'm that just I mean I'm happy that you guys discussed it and um yeah because I just thought about I'm like I thought we were gonna line it and I looked at the requirements and it's not so um okay Mr millerberg and Mrs peton and Mrs nare looking at this especially at the honors diploma if I'm a freshman entering High School I am going to have to pretty much take every class

I take in science is going to have to be lab based and so if I don't take one as a freshman I have given up my opportunity for an honor so you only have to have three to graduate so they took science their sophomore Junior and Senior year I I have to set a goal at least by the beginning of my sophomore year to have an honors diploma correct and the other question I have is I is I look down the requirements for the honors diploma with all those ands in there have you actually charted out a course for a high school student to go through four years of high school and all that oh it does I was gonna say so that oh sorry didn't mean interrupt you but just look at it say

you have somebody that is a is an athlete that participates in fall winter and spring can they still get there yes with fairly fairly without much sacrifice also like you figure in four years of uh course study they have an opportunity to earn 32 credits and our district only requires 28 and then of that 28 10 are elected so if you had the four that we have in addition to the 28 they have 14 years of elective credit they can they can they can fit this in without much trouble the kids that do struggle to fit it all in are the kids who are in in drama and playing instrument and they take four years of drama and four years of of Orchestra and that's that's a big chunk of their electives those kids have

a little bit rougher time but they can still fit it in yeah Mrs Pon yeah it's more a clarification situation in the honors diploma if I was sitting down as a well sitting down with as a parent with my student and we were looking at these different uh options that we have for diploma and you're right month that we you'd have to plan ahead you couldn't just say halfway through your junior year you're going you know I could go for the honors you know you're both you're already kind of cut yourself out but I think the way it's written is a little assuming that they know what you mean um all science courses must be lab based how about all pre all courses taken you know make it more past tense all previous courses should

or all but one should be ba lab based or whatever make it more clear because the way it sounds is almost like you have to do now lab you know it doesn't make it clear that they have to be done along the way you don't see that until you hit the honors diploma so you have to say as you choose your Sciences I know counselors are going to be able to say that but if a parent's looking at that that's just conf a little bit confusing um because you have the and you know well we can actually list the courses the courses the town I mean that would be easy okay is that possible to color code that Tom so like when a counselor meets with a student they can hand a parent here's here's

the courses that are in line for Hors and you color code like honors is in Red so they can see that progression over four years AB we can we can make this as us that' be perfect that that'll take care of it because just looking at this only and not talking with the counselor because I don't know that all students take that opportunity well I know the counselors will go get them but anyway in my day they didn't talk to everybody well they do a much better job than I hope so because they never talk to me and uh this would I would have had to figure this out by myself and it um is a little bit confusing what you intend the way it's written but if you have it colorcoded that's perfect that'll

that'll do it that that would be my that' be yeah which classes you need to that's how I did it in college actually broke down coursework by the year on what things you had to take in what in what order so that I knew to I could graduate we have period of time sorry we have some of those things right now in our in our course cataloges Very delineated like that and we would do the same thing sorry haven't gone through high school yet again fine no it's a great only gone through middle school and Elementary I haven't graduated yet thank you okay Mrs nbar one one thing we also talked about in the high quality learning committee is to be able to have some sort of a at graduation whether it's a pin or

a cord or something um for these kids to have an opportunity to have a portfolio with their portraits of a canyon scholar and that we would even possibly have them on display at senior Awards night and things and we've gone back and forth talking about it could be on a Google Drive uh I know that the as program does something like that and and you know we've talked about this quite a bit in fact at one point I was thinking it would be a neat pathway as an honors diploma if the kids can demonstrate that they have you know it they have learned those five attributes of a you know portrait of a canyon scholar so um I know it's not part of the presentation tonight but I'd like it to be kept as a

thought that it could absolutely be an extra delineation at graduation and something we really should consider since the Strategic plan is our Northstar that we should be doing something to encourage kids to do that so we have a lot of we have we have a lot of our seniors who complete a cap Zone and uh it's tied to Senior English and I think that is something we could put some of that into the Capstone yes if if like it would be their Capstone we could integrate some of the portrait of a scholar into the Capstone I don't think that would be too too big of a modifier that' be great and I'd love to I'd love that to be a distinguisher with their diploma of some way okay um I do oh shoot Nancy has

a question one other another thoughts so so um back to this idea of you have to plan ahead in ninth or tth grade um there I think there it would be possible for a junior or senior because many like math is required every year up until senior year so senior year you would choose to take that fourth year of math and science is required you know three years and then I mean if you are one lab science short in one year you could take two two of the of the courses and and so um so I you know I I don't want to discourage people that if they haven't you know because because you could find yourself in a place where by your junior year you realize wait I want to go for this and

I can well just to respond a little bit I mean we're trying to align this with with a little bit more of a college readiness for the 21st century you know and we do know that students are needing more science we do know that students are needing more math and that's that's it isn't just to get the honor diplomas because we know that these are the skills that are going to most benefit them as they go into the workplace or into into you know post high school education and so we're trying to really focus on the things that we think will be the most valuable so it's a you know twofer that we're getting the honor diploma and we're giving them more skills that will help them as they proceed out so okay um so

my question is so the three lab Sciences has it always been like that because I know that aligned with the old region so are we just carrying that over or is this something new I can't remember if this is something new or it was already on there I I can't remember I don't know um I I know we we we we I I know we uh we back and forth between requiring a apce or uh IB science and not just in advanced science like making them take one of those and I think we settled on making sure that all three were lab based and that was kind of a compromise so we're just we're just trying to get the kids to challenge themselves in science and math so you guys do because there are lots

of science classes so that was kind of my other question like you guys feel that these are the science classes that will prepare them for college I'm a science guy so I'm probably biased but yeah I think I think as they go into college that it's really I mean a lot of most of your medical stem you know majors in that right I mean a lot of our social sciences they probably aren't as necessary but you know a lot of the you know any any of our technical based or medical based Fields you need to have seen biology chemistry and physics before you get there is just a huge Advantage um so I I do think it's a leg up if the students have taken the core Sciences okay okay can can I just throw

one small grenade into this I was just supposed to present I know well I'm kidding okay so so when I'm thinking about all right small grenade but still a grenade so when I'm when we're thinking about uh our long range planning and we're thinking about future of ctec and some of the point some of the things that we've been talking about and we're talking about embedding steam principles so I think it would probably be fair to say that um computational thinking is part of that equation right now that can look a lot of different ways it doesn't necessarily align to traditional math right so I'm talking about things like robotics or things like progam science or data science um computer science and you know we were at uh last year at education excellence in education

and this topic came up one of the presenters talked about you know the demand in careers right for these skills and I'm just wondering I not to add I mean we could add all day to this list but thinking about our strategic vision and and really where we want to go um you know how does that fit into this equation because we're really not calling that out it doesn't look like um and alongside that two more small grenades uh I we also talked a little bit about Civics and we also talked a little bit about financial literacy to you know two major skill sets that are also probably in high demand in a future democracy right so maybe I don't know I maybe we need to look at some of these or so can I

respond so the yeah no it's not bad so yeah that's all right so I think I think with the with the financial literacy and the Civics we do think we do well yeah I think we cover that I mean we do have the financial literacy and and I've actually when I've observed those classrooms I've been very impressed with the curriculum they talk about investing they talk about you know savings talk about how interest rates work you know how debt works I I you know we're one of the few states that has that as a requirement and and as I've observed that class I've been very impressed with the things they discussed in there um with the um Civics um our seniors are required to take the US government and it does a fantastic job with

with specifics and and that's really the focus of the curriculum and then with the other piece I think maybe we could add as as as maybe an ore instead of a CT pathway concentrator which which a lot of our kids who who are on a doing the things you're talking about whether there's data science or computer science they're going to have three courses in that area which would give them the concentrator but we could also make it so it's more Competency Based where it's either a concentrator or a or a like a Capstone course like well like if you take AP Computer Science that counts or if you take AP Calculus that counts if you if you hit the if you hit the cap in that area I mean even if you don't take you

know four years of math if you take as an example if you take AP c as a freshman I have no issue handing you an honor diploma um so I think we could add to this a a terminal course and if you pass the terminal course it's the same as as your year years of of uh of completion one of the so I've heard this in lots of different meetings with industry um and this I think this came up a couple years ago even at State Schoolboard convention is just you know from industry the number of AP or higher level concurrent enrollment or AP level computer science courses that how or lack thereof in our state you know and they're saying we have thousands of jobs you know qual tricks you name it where data

analysts and and people that do this type of work um or programming on and on and on right and we just can't fill these jobs that they're being outsourced to India and other places around the world and so I I just think as we're thinking about some of these projects and things ahead that this is a place to embed that philosophy right that we recognize that uh going forward and and we want to encourage stud students to you know that want to pursue this that this is also some motivation and incentive so anyway just some thoughts okay Mrs Oaks I almost want to start from the drawing board I actually I loved your grenade I think it this I don't know what it is about this particular subject we've talked about this in high quality

learning and it's never fully settled with me and it I think it's for that very reason I don't feel like it reflects what it is we've set aside in the Strategic Vision I feel like it's a a remodeled version of a very traditional model that we've been operating from for a very long time but absolutely I mean from a competency based perspective if we have kids that are already hitting it out of the park as freshman or sophomores like we we should be able to recognize that and accommodate them and and you know when we're talking about the the lab Sciences I am one of the first people to tell you that I want my kids doing Hands-On learning but I will also tell you that in my personal experience over at Corner Canyon one

of the best teachers over there is the AP psychology teacher and my kids came out changed people now it wasn't a lab science it's not necessarily because that's her choice you know high school students only have so much opportunity to do certain things with Labs of psychology but I would never trade in a million years the experience that my children had in that class so I I do think we need to kind of rethink some pieces of this a little bit maybe we kick it back to the high quality learning and say how do we really reflect the portrait of a graduate in this so so we actually had that conversation and I think the the consensus of the committee was you guys wanted this now so um it's a it's it's really for us

we're happy to revamp and and and bounce this around some more I think we were trying to you know adjust it to to the more you know a more current requirement but I don't I don't I don't think anybody would be opposed to doing something differently I mean we were we're welcome to use the one we've always used this year so I I'm not in a hurry just and in relation to timing what time of year would a decision need to be made so that it could be implemented because there's a four-year Runway yeah I think uh registra going going with you know Karen's point and I think eighth graders are signing up for High School courses in February so I think we're we're on a February deadline if we want to um promote this

to the eth graders it'll be signning up for ninth grade classes next year yeah I I think that Amber's timeline said 2028 would be the yeah so so well so that's the first graduating class that would impa the kids are in high school now will go continue with the current one and then this year's eth graders would start on this new okay M sorry I know this is gonna require more committee work but I feel like this is an untapped potential opportunity for us to really forward the goals of the Strategic plan like for instance to what Miss Nar was talking about like if we want a Capstone that really reflects what we talked about in The Portrait of a a graduate or a canyon scholar like this is our chance to do it is

to embed that in to a diploma like this and I don't know I don't know why we didn't I feel like a loser I'll be honest like I'm like we've had all of these meetings and we've talked about the portrait of Canyon schar I'm like why did we not reflect it here anyway so I again I appreciate the small grenade I think I think we needed to have this conversation okay I think you guys are back to the drawing board hope you got all of that what everyone said because I got it can I make one other one so if it is going back to the drawing board and and I you know I like the idea of something related to portrait of a scholar and I mean that's just something I Envision from the

get-go when we were talking about our strategic plan but um but I would like like to make it something that every student in Canyons could achieve not just those that are going for advanced and honors diplomas because I think those skills are something that can benefit every student and shouldn't be held just reserved for these um Advanced and honors diplomas so as you go back to the drawing board that's just some input I would like to be considered hey can I add one more thing one more smallen no more additions you know what and so so really I I love this because you know what and to your point Amanda like it kind of frees our mind right about what this could be and and and who's to say we need just an advancer honors

I mean strands of achievement for kids at graduation honestly like every kid has their own path right kind of to ny's point and and when you really look at our strategic Vision it's it's very comprehensive that way right there's so many Pathways to success that we're trying to honor and recognize that um you know maybe that's another thing that we take back is that we really kind of rethink the whole thing in in aligning to our strategic Vision in a way that as we think about long range planning those things all intersect and make sense so so that's great I think most of our high schools have their own Pathways already they do they already have that yeah so I mean when we I think when we set up to do this we wanted to

find like a common you know career ready pathway and all of our schools were doing their little you know we have like I mean my most recent school Brighton I think we have 20 different chords they can earn at Brighton for different Pathways they chose and some of them are pretty rigorous and some of the kids really try to earn as many as they can in their four years there and I mean I don't know how the I don't want to speak for the high schools but I think maybe this I don't this just a suggestion and may maybe we take this opportunity to align those programs at the high schools and help and and and we kind of say this is what maybe what we'd like those cours to look like at all of

our schools and have a common Focus for for achieving the the advanced recognition because some of them almost become pet projects you know for for some teachers and I think we could align some of those pathway chords in a more um systemic way so there'll be some teachers that be mad at me for just suggesting it but I think it ought to be something we consider so okay uh two more quick questions or suggestions Mrs Nar and Mrs Oak I just really I wanted to just second I really appreciate Nancy's comment as well about aligning it to portrait of a canyon scholar it is something I've talked about in high quality learning and if if they have it every student has it and then you know it could be tied into the honors like those

that are the most Stellar or something that they're that they're even you know that they're it's on display or there's a way that people can access it I mean even a QR code at the senior Awards night so that you can view some of those amazing right uh files that you have like they're catched on like the most excellent there'd be some but anyways it what's so rewarding I think is for not only the students to be able to have that compiled but it also you know if it's if it's if it follows them throughout their pathway elementary middle and high then we it's also a great indicator for us right that it's happening and that they're absorbing it and then what a great reward for teachers and parents and students right to see that

and to see what's happened with that also I just wanted to say Tom you're so congenial we've asked you a lot of questions you're a great Amber standin although you don't have the shoes but no thank you for for being so patient with all of this I'll make this quick so I do think this needs to go back to the committee for a deeper dive but in the meantime I would like to make a motion that we add to the current um Advanced and honors diploma um an indication of the option for the Seal of biliteracy and also for the Arts Pathways okay is there a second to that motion I'll second that oh great okay we have a motion and a second is there any discussion to that motion I have a question about

it so by adding it in does that mean in effect for this year's graduating seniors yes so there would be some students that would not have that opportunity to meet that extra qualification so they would then be disqualified from no it's an orur so they've already been on the the pathway to achieve what's been on there previously it's not going to prevent them but it will open up the opportunity for some of those art students or students who are bilingual that may not have taken in that many language courses so so the um so the or comes with the world languages the world languages and um yes and there it's he has highlighted in yellow so so that's not a that's not a complete list of what the current so the old honors did have

did require two years of of World Language and we we've always honored the Sy by literacy with an appeal any kid who had that we we we gave up to him by default that was a that was a given but I don't I don't remember if it's explicitly written in the it's not it hasn't been and so I that's the that's the change I'm proposing and also the addition for an or option for an Arts pathway and where would sorry that would be or fall it would fall under the honors diploma I know but but or what I mean from CTA pathway concentrator 1.45 so that's a new thing it's not in the current one which one is it the pathway oh is the CTE yeah okay so I need to amend my motion I

was thinking that was already there so it's just the world language that's there it doesn't mean we couldn't add art World Language syab by literacy or art okay but we have art has that's the CT pathway has never been an OP I actually think the CT pathway is a positive thing for now um so I would like to amend my motion that the current Advanced and honors diplomas reflect the option for a CTE pathway concentrator or World World Language or Sal literacy or ours pathway are we ask a question yes sorry forine I'll break in protocol so so it's 2.0 World Language okay um are we are we good with 1.5 of a SE then that's the requirement for concentrator so I think that's a good number we want to stick with the 1.5 additional

in in a fine art yes okay yeah so I just wanted to clear yeah okay do so she amended her motion do we have a second to that amended motion I'll second it and just want to point out that the she's also saying that it's not only for the honors but for the advanced also the original motion didn't the ADV okay that's fine they're both on the they're they're both there and you just you just outlined it now but just that original motion only had the honors so including the advanced too for notes yep perfect okay Mr wait did we get a second yes okay good oh that's right okay Mr Ed has a discussion yeah so um since I was not prepared to uh amend the current standards and I don't have um a

proposed current standards in front of me um I just wanted to say that I I'm not necessarily opposed to the changes um but that will be reflected in my boote and I just wanted to explain that um so that is clear but I mean take me like 30 seconds I probably pull it up if you want to see would that be helpful or do you want to wait yeah if you can pull it up take a second that's right did you comits and policy 600.1 as an exhibit oh thanks I'm just going to go through the curriculum that's probably faster I've been looking at it here say that again please Nancy I'll see 600.1 and it's an exhibit well that didn't work out well oh I don't know how to I don't know how to

put this up there oh okay where'd she go oh she just told me they were seeing it on the zoom I thought it was okay if they see on Zoom I didn't know does this look so right now the the only additional requirements for an advanced diploma on top of a regular diploma are 2.0 credits of World Language and a minimum GPA of 2.0 that's all the requirements for advanced right now and then for uh honors diploma the current requirements are the 2.0 World languages minimum GPA of 3.0 and then to hit the college ready Benchmark four College ready benchmarks on the ACT those are the current regulations so what what we would be changing is instead of just having the 2.0 World languages as one of the indicators we would also allow for um

the um sea by re one and a half additional concentrator CTE credits or one and a half additional Fine Arts credits would be the only thing we would change and we do that for the advanced and the owners um Can can I make a comment um you know I I appreciate what you're trying to do but I also know earlier in this discussion we talked about getting some feedback from the high the student advisory Council you know I I don't feel ready to actually vote on on that idea yet because I feel like we we'd want to see it in writing and I feel like we owe it to the public to have it in writing so that it can be on board docs they can look at it we can get feedback student advisory

Council will be meeting before our next board meeting so we can get feedback from them and we can we can get it clear because I think to take action on something that is not clear at this point we might want to wait is what I'm saying yeah I agree I withdraw my motion and I think yeah obviously we're not ready to pass anything today and I think it's a really great idea to get feedback from the students but i' also would love to have the high quality Learning Community Committee do a deeper dive on what we can really do with regard to the portrait of a canyon scholar so okay um Mrs Nar and I would be in favor of having the changes sooner than 2028 especially with the minimum GPA requirements I would really

love to have that changed well I would love to change the GPA right now that's my opinion so let's let's just let's bring this back so let's bring it back because currently really for an advanced diploma the 2.0 that's rough okay well um it's been a really good discussion and so I think um sure yes you can um looking at the way it's presented in Poli Advance we have brought up to me is so much more clear to read that to where I can see English how many all to the three different math how many required in each one where just summarize everything that you know you bring it on standard diploma requirements mve in if you bring it back and present it what it look like this that would be so much easier to

read very quickly what so so moving forward I'll I'll bring I'll bring back a a better version of this slide with some of the comments we've had today and integrated um and then it does say on here sealed by literacy is available but it doesn't explicitly say that it covers the World Language so I think that's missing from our current narrative it just says it's there it doesn't say it covers it and it does but it doesn't say it and then it also outlines that they have to take specific a specific list of uh Senior English courses as well so that is something we may want to continue I think that's a great suggestion because there are some Al there are alternate courses they can count for Senior English and I do like that um

that's encouraging them to take the core English so I'll come back back with a modified version that we're going to change prior to 2028 and then the committee will wait for more feedback from the um high quality the high quality learning before they proceed with further recommendations okay I think that sounds good good recap and thank you for um standing in for Amber Dr Rodrick okay um oh Mrs Pon okay um I'm move that due to the hour and the importance of presenting information concerning long-term planning that we postpone discussing it tonight and put it back on study session because we're going to be meeting more often that we will have that opportunity to present to the community in a nearby in the next meeting okay so you are making a motion to move um

item F to actually just yeah move it to the next meeting move it back to the next meeting okay is there a second to that motion I'll second the motion okay any discussion to that motion um yeah Nancy oh Mrs Oaks it's I would I think it's a good idea to move it to another study session I we're tired and there's a lot there's a lot of detail in there a lot of layers of things that we need to discuss in depth and I would prefer that we do it when we're all little bit more fresh so okay thank you Mrs neyar I'm okay with that but I would like to just bring up one thing that I wanted to mention tonight I I feel that long range there's so many moving pieces and this

is such a heavy lift and it absolutely determines the direction of the District in the next 5 to 10 years that I would feel most comfortable if we had rotating assignments so other board members could also attend especially because it's going to weekly that's a heavy lift for those members as well and when we were at the leadership academy I actually afterwards talked to a few other boards that have rotating assignments for something of this nature I love the idea that because pretty much it's going to affect all of the board members community so I love that idea that we rotate through those meetings so that we there you know if there's four or five meetings before the rest of the board gets to take a look at it with the discussions and things I

just think it helps move it forward with more um to be more informed by the other board members okay maybe could we um because that's not really the vote we're taking right now so can we just take a vote right now and then we can discuss that because that's a whole yeah my point is is that is that something that I'm I'm happy to move it to a next meeting if that's something we can briefly discuss now because that's that's something that I would like to discuss tonight before we go into more meetings of long range until the next presentation okay that's fine um let's are there any more discussion to the motion are we discussing the motion or discussing her we're discussing the motion not what she said okay okay so I will call

for a vote on that motion to move long range planning to our next meeting all in favor say I I I I any opposed n okay Mr Ed all oppos to I guess because I'm not sure if I'm clear are we going to discuss that or no I said yes yes okay and plus you already voted I guess you could change no I I haven't voted yet I didn't vote in favor okay so I was Voting um not in favor I I'm just nervous about so much to unpack with long range so I guess I'm going to you're so your vote is name I'll be with Andrew on this one okay so two yeah five five2 you got those okay okay um so Mrs naar brought up the idea of alternating the committee so Mr

Miller you know hly on the surface of that I think it sounds really good but the problem is long-term planning has been having discussion for quite some time now about some pretty weighty issues I'm not privy to what's going on in long-term planning so if I rotate in how much additional time is going to be spent to bring me up to seed so I can go to one or two meetings so I can drop out of the committee and bring somebody else in to bring them up to speed and I'm just afraid for those that are leading the long-term planning committee that it would be a lot of extra time spent getting people up to seed so they can then you know somewhat participate in the discussion I don't I don't know who was next

um let's have Mrs tingi okay but Hol you already spoke to bring up this so I'm letting everyone else speak before you go again yeah because that's how Robert is supposed to be so Mrs T um yeah thank you for bringing it up I'm I'm a little bit nervous for many of the same reasons Mr millerberg pointed out and I feel like the way um that the way to kind of mitigate what Holly's trying to do as well as be more efficient in in the Committees time and is is what I think at the beginning of the evening you mentioned that we're having long range planning report at every board meeting so that gives every board member opportunity to be made aware of what's going on and to and to um provide input all all

along the way and then um but if if we do kind of go or want to consider that route I would feel more comfortable if we asked Our advice of our legal councel on on how that would um apply how the open and public meeting acts Provisions would you know influence influence that because if if it's an ongoing discussion with more than three and it's not being done in a open board meeting I I just would want to have that looked at um by our legal council oh Mrs pson I'm not trying to delay you Holly um I was wondering if this would accommodate your know the board's knowledge if in this um committee we actually did notes of each meeting and summarize the content of each of the meetings as well as that can

be distributed either electronically following our meeting so you have time to look through those and then you would be prepared for the presentation that would be given in our study sessions if that would accommodate some of that concern okay there again I'm not sure if that would break open meeting law so we would have to would have to have our legal counsil look at that but anyway thank you for that idea um Mrs Oaks I can totally appreciate the concern attached to there's so many moving pieces we have a meaning honestly part of um what was going on behind that is trying to collect accurate data so the um flyer that you guys got today we just barely received for the first time this last week and it really this was kind of helped bring

into focus a lot of things that we've been wondering about we don't want to alarm anyone or make people panic because we have incomplete pieces of information we want to make sure that when it comes before for the public that it's clear and it's solid and and that I can promise you there are like a million times when we're in our meetings and we're saying what about this what about this and all of us keep saying we need to bring it for the board we need to bring it for the board and we have felt a large sense of urgency with that I feel badly that it's gotten tabled tonight because I've actually really wanted to make sure everybody has a chance to weigh in on it because I do feel like it would be

helpful for us to have more heads look at it honestly because there's a lot of complex issues at play um but certainly as board leadership we can make sure that we prioritize more time for us to discuss it and that that definitely happens moving moving forward the other thing to keep in mind and too I know as um board members a number of us will be doing site visits at various Public Schools um both locally and across the country to get a better idea of what kind of learning models we want and that plays into what we're going to be deciding to and so all of that's kind of coming together if my word of advice with all of this is take a a really close look at the um document that was prepared with

regard to priorities because part of the difficulty that we've been facing and then this really crystallized for us recently is that we've been operating from a number of different perspectives I need to represent this community I need to represent this community I need to represent this interest and really we had this crystallization moment where it was like we need to begin with the end in mind of what we want to see happen um the point is supposed to be bringing over 14,000 jobs and in certain industries how do we prepare our students to be able to rise up and take those and be qualified to be able to fill those positions and that means we need to really get clear on what kind of a learning model we want there at ctec and a number

of other places and be able to back plan because it's only once we have that crystallized in our minds that we're going to understand what the building that cc is going to become needs to look like and it's only when we understand what that looks like that we know where it needs to go so it's kind of like this row of dominoes so when we realize that as a group that was when we turned to Rick and and Lan said can you help us crystallize what our priorities need to be and so that was where we were like okay we were ready to share it with all of you and now it's almost 10 o'clock so I I promise we really are trying to fill in and and keep all of you guys in the

loop and participate and all of that and I would encourage you as we're going to the site visits and talking about all of this as as board members that we keeping that in mind because that really not only does it pertain to high quality learning but it is going to impact what we decide to do with our buildings and all of those other decisions so okay Mr Edo so I really appreciate um Holly's desire for uh increased transparency um in this and not that there's you know uh an effort to not make it transparent right it's it's in a committee we all know how that works um and so I don't I don't want to think that but um based on the the weight and the level of importance I think that um the work

that the long-term planning committee is going into with with some of the things right now has um considerable impact for everyone's Community um I uh and and I get uh montt's point that it would be uh really difficult to um swap out the different committee members um but uh I think transparency is important I liked I liked Karen's idea um of having minutes okay oh right um uh but like tonight for example we're just not discussing this so we could say we're going to put it on the agenda but are we going to get to it um you know that has to be demonstrated before I have have faith in that um since our tonight as we're discussing this we're we're not discussing it um and I've been a parent on the side of a

school getting closed um and boundaries getting shifted and I would like to say that as a parent uh I don't want solidified answers I want to know what's going on now um and so on my end I'm always going to be transparent with my community because I went through it um and I was told I don't know how many times well this isn't decided yet yeah but you guys are talking about this and um I'm going to feel a lot more at ease if I know what you're talking about it doesn't matter that it hasn't been decided it's that I don't want to be in the dark um and as we have these wide reaching impacts um I think our parents don't want to be in the dark and so as each of us as

board members I think we just want to have the information so that when these discussions come up we can speak to them um and our our our community doesn't feel like they're in the dark and we don't feel like we're in the dark um again I'm not critiquing the committee saying that you're being secretive because you're not uh just kind of uh you know echoing that um just the situation is really pretty intense my turn now okay yes Mrs Nar thank you so much for those comments so because we are going to be presenting this hopefully and giving enough time every board meeting and hopefully we do minutes which is okay with open meeting act I know um it was it's actually the usba president was talking about the minutes that they have at the

Committees and I talked to her afterwards anyways the current one so so if if we're keeping minutes and we're doing these presentations at board meetings every board member should be pretty current on what's going on and should be able to rotate into those groups I was on long range planning um just barely until we reassigned in January and although this is new for the October you know the October attendance the exact same schools were under low numbers last year too when this was presented to us so some of this information may be new to some members who are new to the committee but this is these are numbers we have been looking at and exactly what Mr edel said just like you don't want you know as a parent to be in the dark you

don't want to be as a board member in the dark I am accountable to my constituents and if you look at the district Capital priorities the point that's actually my district that's my map that's my district where that's happening the West Draper property that's also my district that's my map those are my people I'm accountable too and the the cchs fields the CCH Fields house I have five of those District Capital priorities that are on that list and so as as a a board member that's been elected and feels accountable to my constituents I'm I would really appreciate a rotation in so that I can also talk to I can I can be very well versed about the discussions and be able to talk to you know my communities as as I need to um

I did Sub in you know um Mrs shill wasn't able to be there and I was able to sub in I didn't think it was difficult to be up to speed at all and I just you know I just as as this presentation I've read over this and I've I've put not copious notes on all of this because you know it's a big concern because as Andrew said this really shapes our district in the next 10 to 15 years and when I look at it and I say gosh I have five of these priorities in my map and then I look at it and I see Mont has a lot of these in his map Andrew has a lot of these in his map uncy has these in his map in her map it makes

sense to me that we do a rotation so that we can all be able to communicate to our communities and feel like we're all up to speed and we're able to all weigh in because it is this is the biggest thing the district's doing it's the this is the most impactful committee and so seven heads are better than than three right as we rotate through I believe should be math should work out I guess okay thank you um Mr millerberg and I want like we can't make a decision because this is not like on the agenda but we are just kind of discussing it um I will you know get with Dan get some input from him on this and Mr Miller because bringing up the idea open leing laws I think that's a big

deal and just an assumption that if the long range or long-term planning committee provides us with minutes from each meeting that those would be subject to open meeting law and would be attached to our agenda for on board do for the public to look at because I you know I think that would have to be to where our constituents would have ready access to whatever is being discussed with all seven board members sorry one one other idea I'm just GNA throw it out there um I recall several years ago when the district had a lot of big rocks that we were working on we called special meetings for two or three hours just on one topic so I'm not saying we talk about doing that now but I'm just throwing it out there as another

option to consider okay thank you thanks for everyone's input and we will make sure on our next agenda that long range planning does have a long time and just to remind to the board there's board members from every area of the district which is why those members are on the committee because we're hopefully covering most of the district and I would just say board members should talk to their fellow board members that are on the committee in their areas so you guys are on the same page I think that is fine to give them input um okay we're going to go on to staff comments so first of all the superintendent report Dr Robbins um just a brief comment about uh a shout out and a thank you to um Midville Elementary I visited there

today and um in their uh Community uh support uh room we went out with the principal McKay and there was about 15 to 20 refugees there adults all parents and all learning English most of them were from Afghanistan and it was just um um it's pretty heartwarming to see you know being Proud To Be An American Proud to be part of the district and and seeing that unfold uh some of those folks have been in that class or have been coming daily for two to three years and so the fact that you know we helped provide that opportunity um some of them had even smaller children with them um but just their their gratefulness and their gratitude and just the atmosphere was pretty awesome so I really appreciate everybody's efforts that make all of that

happen and provide that support so that's all okay thank you Mr Willcox over there business administrator report just thank you to Tom and Rick and the PO board on the discussion on the diplomas the dad of an eighth grader it's exciting to see this come to life for him next year so I'm excited about that uh Christa and Kathy here is want to acknowledge them and all of our great teachers who supported us last week at parent teacher conferences big big week for us and so thank you to all 1900 teachers who supported us last week with with that so that that's all I have tonight okay thank you we'll now have board comments and we will start with Mrs peton tonight okay um I wanted to compliment both parents and the district on the

communicate and schools on the communication the quality of the communication that we're getting from parents Square now that I have access to parents Square for my theater schools and my schools um I'm impressed by the quality of information that I am receiving male um if I was a parent I would be I would feel very informed um I I really I really enjoying the quality of that um I wanted because of um National custodians day I have a personal uh shout out for Perry Smith um she I have noticed is the cute little lady she has someone else she works with but I don't know his name that puts up all these chairs every single time we have meetings puts those away puts up the tables she's out there in the front when we have

windstorms and the branches get broken off she's over there picking those things up I was over at transportation and she was pulling weeds from the asphalt around the Portables this woman goes above and beyond her job description and she's so um humble about it she doesn't like attention she doesn't so too bad she gets it I think she's an amazing example of going above and beyond and being Canyon strong so I want to do a shout out for Perry and when I see her I'll make sure I give her a hug um I also my last one was I really enjoyed participating in parent teacher conferences not as a teacher but I got to be a parent and I volunteered for the book fair over at Eastmont and that was a great deal of fun

to be on the other side since usually I've never had that opportunity and to be able to interact with the students again as they're purchasing their books and talking about their lives was a really fun experience so I got to experience conference in a different way and it was awesome thank you and Mrs tiny um thank you I I don't have much to report but um because this last couple of weeks I was working remotely for the most part so wasn't able to participate in some of the events that I know happened but I just want wanted to call attention um to our website and I noticed that when you just go on the homepage the little video that they have up there now is so heartwarming and inspiring and I I just I I

wish that um everyone would just take a minute and and look at that and it will warm your heart and and make you feel so proud to be part of Canyon school district so which I am thank you Mr mberg you know it seems like it was forever ago but it hasn't been all that long but I think that we definitely need to call out uh Canyon's Education Foundation and for the ex extraordinary uh golf tournament we put on up at wasach Mountain State Park a couple of weeks ago that has been a classic for a long time now day was beautiful the the thing that I found most interesting about it is everybody I spoke with was not there out of obligation they were there because they wanted to be there people were excited

to be there Denise had this sold out in July um I was uh originally assigned to play with the with steel the people that have done our financing for through the bonds they had an episode of Co in their office and accordingly bowed out and Denise immediately called people on her standby list and uh so we went up playing with The Architects I think it from core Architects out of Utah County had a great time it it was so much fun because the whole sponsors were not there just to have a table sitting there or a sign up saying they sponsored the whole there were games at almost every pole um people were engaging uh and I think everybody that was at the tournament had a great time with such a well plann such a

great uh opportunity to involve the community in what we do and so I I declare it a success okay thank you Mrs Oaks thanks for that um I got to participate in my first podcast ever with ginger and Rick we were discussing um our libraries in the Canyon school district and the new monies that have been invested in our libraries and I love it you like my favorite subject probably is books and getting excited about reading and introducing children to reading and and books and that was a lot of fun and I want to give a shout out to our Communications Department they do such a great job um displaying the strengths of our district and helping the public understand why canyons and there's thousands of reasons of why Canyons but that was a lot

of fun for me uh I also got to attend the first meeting for my son's book Blitz team at his Elementary School while we on the same subject that is an awesome program I really want to give a shout out to Gretchen for for heading that up I was there at the middle school booklets um competition this past spring and I was like what is this how how have my kids missed out on this right I mean heads up to what Paula Logan was saying tonight right where parents understand what kind of opportunities exist at their kids school so we have all of the books listed at home and we've all talked about how he's going to systematically get through all of them and I'm excited to listen or read some of those books myself

and and kind of participate with him I think it's a great program and it was so fun to see the excitement with all of those fourth and fifth graders of the elementary so thank you okay thank you Mr edel um so first if anyone ever uh is interested in what I'm doing I would encourage them to check out my Facebook or my Instagram uh but in light of national principles month I just wanted to thank all of our wonderful School administrators out there for the amazing work that they're doing um I have kids who who um have meltdowns when we tell them that they're too sick to go to school um and uh you know that's a direct result of the the culture that's created within the schools they love that so much uh and

then I also want to give a quick shout out to chany Lauren um who is my first principal as a parent and uh uh one a wonderful job she did um back when my kids attended bellw uh and to really kind of set me on the right path to being uh a good parent uh and a good volunteer in the schools and I just I really appreciate uh all of our administrators and the tius work that they put in okay thank you Mrs Nar first off I want to thank our teachers who just finished parent teacher conference in most of our schools I think Brighton is coming up but there's a lot of work that goes into that Mrs Seaborn sent a postcard to my house how happy first month of Middle School to my

son I'm loving getting to know the awesome young man that you are thank you for making us laugh in class and coming up and coming in with a positive attitude I can see you're working hard to learn and keep asking questions and thank you for being engaged in class I am cheering you on you rock and there was a little more to that postcard what an amazing teacher to take the time to do that I went to parent teacher conference and said Mrs Seaborn tell me your plan how many of po postcards are you sending out she said you know I just have so many students that that's one way that I can connect with each of them and she had a few more on her desk I just thought that was amazing and incredible

and of course meant so much to my son to get some positive feedback and that positive feedback creating that culture right that culture that you're celebrated that your teacher knows who you are and that she cares about you just what an example I was grateful for that grateful for all the teachers I met with um Mrs Hansen that was recognized tonight she's my my kindergartner teacher and my second grader header as well and she has such an Engaged classroom she's wonderful um in fact and I always when I meet with her I always say any suggestions or feedback and she had a great suggestion that I'm going to throw out because I said I would today um all day kindergarten is a big stretch for these these little guys and girls coming in she said

what if kindergarten started the same day as the rest of the school but it was just a half day that first week and we do keep testing in the afternoon to test our kids but then they have a week of the half day and then it goes to full I thought that was a great suggestion and they can still do that keep testing so so maybe that's something we can put down in our notes um I just wanted to recognize um Dr Chip wats and Julie moots two of my principles that were nominated for Apex nominations for School administrator of the year and for all of their hard work and um I also wanted to thank all of my fellow board members I know there's there's been a lot of committee work going on as

we can see with that very long presentation with long range that we couldn't get through um and for all all of the Committees that you serve on we we heard from a few of them them tonight I appreciate that uh I really appreciated the attendance at the school Community Council training you know I I when when I got up I said you are my people you're here on the last day but you know some people call it procrastination others it's prioritization right we're busy people you got your to-do list and things move up to the top depending on the timeline but uh but I really actually do relate to that because sometimes when we're busy that's what we have to do right so um but I was really grateful for that and how important that

is for our school community council members to be trained and for the princi principl that are there and always support us as well so thank you for that that's all he thank you um I just want to mention um like Mrs iar that we had um School Community Council training and Susan is not here but she just always does like such an amazing job so I want to thank her and just everyone who helps put that on and um also a lot of the board members were involved so thank you all for coming and participating in that um and lastly I just want to mention um one of the assistant principals at Brighton so my son got injured in the football game and she wrote him a note and it just it really touched me

because at the very end she said I wish I could have taken that break for you and I was like oh my gosh because I as a mother wouldn't take the break I didn't want to take the break for him I'm like but she would I'm like wow anyway I just want to give her a shout out because she she really cares about the kids and is really invested in them and she's great and now the board has finished our work and I will call this meeting to a close thank you that
