anyway do you need an updated um okay I'd like to call the meeting to order like to welcome everyone to the study session portion of the meeting of the Canyons Board of Education today is January 17th 2023 and we are meeting at the district offices located at 9361 South 300 East in Sandy Utah so for the study session the first item is a 2023 legislative update I will turn the time over to Charlie Evans and Susan Edwards from the external relations department Susan come up um we've had a busy first day I think everybody's aware today he is the for the legislative session uh last night experience the voucher bill that we have been preparing foreign remember the title teachers salaries supplement teacher salary and optional education programs so they have money in there that

they've been talking about it was in the governor's budget to increase teacher salaries by sixty five hundred dollars which is I think what we reported to you last time we reported to you is that the teacher's salaries would somehow be tied to the voucher built um I certainly am not in a position to speak for the teachers or the UEA but I haven't spoken extensively with the UEA and I don't think they're I had concerns you know somebody waves a bunch of money in front of me it gets my attention and I have concerned that they may be willing to do the same thing it does appear to be the case at this point like I said I'm not here to speak for them and they're perfectly capable of speaking for themselves but in the

immediate future I don't see that happening and um you know and in past years the way they've done this is they've waited till the very end of the legislative session because as we get to the end of the legislative session that leadership's control over the process tightens quite a bit and I think they've always felt like they have a better cramming and jamming it through at the end of the session um but they haven't been successful in doing that so now they're going to start it here at the beginning of the session as I report it to you Susan I talked to you guys last time here the makeup of the House Education committee has changed quite a bit from the last time our legislature met and so this will probably be one of the

first uh test of that uh the bill is still waiting on a fiscal note but my expectation is that once it has that physical note which will probably happen later this week that we'll see it uh begin to move the sponsor of the bill is also the chair of the House Education there was a bill that dropped today by Senator Weiler why don't you just give a brief update of that Susan it is um let me see if I have Financial title I don't but it is um let me try to find it but it is um one of several bills there's a Cadre of bills discussing um gender identity and transgender bills and this is one of those that would discuss how our employees can work with students and what information we disclose and

at what point and what conditions we have to have for parents so that is that would drop today and then Michael said there's a few of those that are either out there coming I think we are aware three or four right at this moment there's going to be at least three or four probably more like a dozen yeah it's SP 100 School District gender identity policies right and that that is very prescriptive at this point I suspect that bill to change quite a bit but I do expect it to pass uh the bill the voucher bill is House Bill 215 funding for teacher salaries and optional educational opportunities that's by uh representative perucci and Senator cullomore so how I know I'm not sure how you guys can be opposed to optional educational opportunities um those

are the major developments today I think all this is in your update nothing has really changed since we sent that update to you today and we're happy to take any questions that you guys might have about that or anything else that you saw on that list questions board comments about it it's uh yeah has there been any talk I have a question just says I've heard numbers ranging from one to or five billion dollars and surplus has there been talk about using that or tax cuts or anything like that there's gonna be a big tax cut build I've got 900 million dollars in ongoing money as a surplus this year and over a billion dollars in one-time money so there it uh I had a very lengthy conversation with Jerry Stevenson last Friday who was

the Senate chair of the educa or the executive Appropriations Committee and he is adamantly opposed any kind of a um you know a tax rebate and so I don't suspect that happened but you know and so they're lying up you can imagine to spend that one million dollars the real question is what's going to happen to the ongoing there is going to be a significant tax um cut package which will focus mainly I believe on income tax there's very little that they can do with regard to property tax and they don't seem to have a appetite to do that they're the Senate the house is very much interested in taking the rest of the state tax off of food sales tax on food the Senate seems uh less interested in doing that you know Senator

Stevenson you know he said if we could take it all off and that would be worth doing but only a small portion of it is a state the rest of us local maybe it's not local government and I don't think they want to backfill that to the cities so I don't I don't know what will happen there but there will be a significant income tax cut thank you and I said it before but I'll say it again that it's important to education are the state taxing system because basically every dollar that comes in is a dollar that could possibly benefit education if and we haven't seen it yet but we do expect like we said the last time we reported to you they're a constitutional amendment completely removing the Air Max ear mark from the

education fund which they will undoubtedly be something to us for our support and that may be another reason they're doing the voucher Bill early but I don't know that's just speculation on my part thank you other anyone have questions or comments Mr millerberg help me with my stink and thinking here okay Charlie all right Susan income tax is your mark for education we are funded 50th in the nation for income tax for funding of Education and they've got a billion dollar Surplus does that seem strange to anybody else but me that we're the lowest funded in the nation and they've got a surplus and they want to put give it to everybody else but education certainly not the same it certainly does seem strange to me too I agree with you my thinking out of

whack here no okay now you know and um this is going to be a very difficult session for a lot of reasons and um you know passage or the failure of this voucher bill I think will have impact on what happened with all sorts of funding at the end of the legislative session which is probably another reason they're starting it early this year I don't want to speak bartham because I certainly haven't been involved in any of the strategy that they have come up with I was a little bit surprised given the way they've chosen to do this in the past that they're starting so early but um but it will have a very significant ripple effect I don't know what the larger board for ripple is but it'll have a large ripple effect on

what happens at the end of the session wave or a short wave yes they look like after the tsunami has receded and you can see the whole Beach that may be what it looks like um well we may not see that for a year or two down the road when we start seeing that afterwards okay any other questions or comments um I want to also just mention thank you this last week we had um a lunch where we were able to share the board's priorities with our legislative representatives and senators from the Cambridge District area and it was very I thought a very um respectful and productive conversation and so thank you for all that you guys did to help us with that we we did it was very productive I thought we got into

really more of the meat of the issues than we have in the past which I know the legislators appreciated they asked us to do it earlier in the year so next I'm sure we'll do it in November rather than January but I think it went very well yeah okay great thank you for that update we'll look forward to seeing you at every fourth meeting for being here okay thank you all right next on our agenda is an update on Eastmont Middle School and so for this item I will turn the time over to Mr Leon Wilcox business administrator and while he's coming up I'll ask if he um I don't know if you have anyone here that's here to answer questions on this but um if so will you introduce them and then I failed

to recognize that an excuse Holly nybar and Andrew edel from this portion of the meeting so first and foremost I want to this everybody knows Stacy she has been the driver behind this whole situation and has done in just an amazing amazing job so I'm gonna have asked her to speak here in a minute and also Ryan Ryan's been the boots on the ground with dealing with the the plan we had to submit and doing what the abatement company so he can answer any questions if we don't hit here just want to give you an update of where we're at where we see I think we're going to be going on on ease monitor some of these slides added a few wording things uh later this afternoon so if you've read it afternoon there may

be a couple months of changes here I want to give you some background history on what this how what what caused this to occur so in bitter in the Eastmont we've had we call water migration that's why we're coming up through the bottom floor over there and it's made kind of a messy bluish problem there on the main on the bottom floor uh and so we brought in a team of Engineers and architects we did this last in record October and ask them how we could best mitigate this and they said the best thing to do is tear out the toilets on that floor and then go do core drilling samples and so let's see if we can find out where the water comes from and then we can try to come up with a

plan there so that was our plan so we were planning to remove this tile we thought it would take three or four days over over the Christmas break and so that was the plan to do that uh so we remove the tile then we'd have to grind down the tile mix with The Walking surface people that students would walk on so that they'd be walking on concrete for the rest of this year that was the plan well well we did the core drilling and also if you knew been in the gym we've had warping in the gym so we again water coming up in the gym so we wanted to do that as well look at that so there's a couple of the pictures you can see the glue it's gone up if you've been

over there it's been what certain days it's been very bad uh other day is not as bad but still a mass of my store you can't really see it here but this is cordon off areas on the basketball equipment we can't play because you got quite people working up on the on the floor there um here's this bottom level of the Eastmont plans here so I always like to you know the parking lot's over here as you walk here you walk down this hallway the auditorium keep walking here's the gymnasium girls walking boys [Music] down here uh our rooms over here at the top area uh the idea well the plan was that we still did remove all this tile kind of a light shade of yellow if you can see it and then all

those hallways there that's what I'm going to do and we start to take a couple days to do that so before you you can remove any tile that may have asbestos you have to have a testis so we brought in samples uh so we took samples back in late October the other report back on November 4th it had none detected we believed that we were good to go so that's why we proceeded forward with the plan and uh so let me just tell you what we believe the asbestos is coming from so the asbestos is believed to be from the blue that from the original EVT it's asbestos vinyl tile when the school is built this is the school's 50th year so 50 years ago when they laid that tile then that's what they used

sometime after that they removed that tile as what they call a memorial floor on that probably in the 80s or 90s we don't really have a record of when that occurred so that became in place and that was used for today in 2014 we had a flood there flood had been in due to a irrigation line break happened in July of 2014. a few weeks you know maybe a month before school started I remember it was actually late in July July 31st July 31st so that's about as late as July as you can get so we had that so we had to quickly try to remediate and fix it up so schools to start a few weeks later so what we did is we took a vinyl tile LBT tile and we moved that down

on the floor that's what's coming up there is the glue from shorting those uh earlier pictures we did not do any grinding on that old surface we did this in 2014 and I'm sure the reason being is you know just the time to get schoolgirl now when you remove tile you know you do that grinding and when you you know asbestos is the the thing that causes the issue with asbestos is when you they use the term disrupt it meaning you go grind it it comes up in the air and it causes issues it causes health issues if you leave it alone and don't disrupt it you walk over it and be fine it's when you disruptive is what the term they use with this so they began demolition it was on Tuesday the 27th

they got here kind of later the day it was a see the contractor they actually subbed this job out to a contract for a minute or we've used certified sales and service so lots of lots of jobs throughout the district and so they begin on the 27th uh removing the tile in the concrete on Thursday they thought they became suspicious that there could be some asbestos there so that's when they called Ryan Thursday afternoon evening and so Ryan came up with someone from our what we call have our engineering or our plan group and they took several samples how these samples tested overnight and came back Friday morning and they came back positive so that's then the work was halted when they took the samples that's when we you know so then just moving subsequently

on that's that's when we had to shut down the building to all access at that point so we had to develop uh we meet what we call a remediation plan through the State's Department of Air Quality daq which is part of Department of Environmental Quality that plan has been approved I see you know out there we said attentively improved but they did give us notice today that it has been formally approved with the plan we had as we had a you know you've been there you can't walk in there if you want where to walk in there you've been all kinds of barriers plastic barriers to eat the asbestos low centralized and not spreading they don't allow people to walk around to spread it that's their biggest concern so that's where it is right now

as we already have these barriers up we want it to remove we thought it would be best to remove the gym floor at this time we know there's Mercury under there and also that will allow us to do core drilling in the gym floor we'll also find out where the water is coming from so all that ties in so that's what we've decided to do there uh moving also forward we know that there were about 23 people employees most of them are employees but we did have a uh you know we had a milk delivery person we had a spouse of an employee come in the building but about 20 of these were employees that you know were either through the cart badge access the cards or cameras we saw that were in the building

so we notified them that they could have been acceptable or to the to the asbestos of that time to have been disrupted uh are apparently we have on contract Eagle Environmental now they've done all the buildings that we've never had to have a maintenance you know Mid Valley was a big one Hillcrest writing all these that have been invaded over the last several years they're the ones who have been doing the work and they've started that day they've been working ever since uh so the top floor again the three floors of the building the top floor is pretty much done within the day they're doing final test results but they have to expect to have those back and then that floor will be done people could actually go in there now at once it's finalized

and get more stuff if they needed to uh they're they're going to what they're going to do then we've actually moved down and start on all these corridors here on the bottom floor well they set up what they actually have to do on the second floor so that's going to take the next couple weeks it will then move up to the second floor start doing that so what they have to do what was part of the plan the dhcr group we're just cleaning all the uh the floor and the walls that's what they have to wiped in that samples taking in the uh so we have samples taken in the classrooms we tested 14 classrooms on the first and second floor they all came back and undetected we had emptied the student lockers and test

those but we did a sample of those they all come back in none detected uh but again on the second floor which they'll be moving here hopefully this week we'll mail it in a couple weeks they still have to do all the YP and then clean up the cafeteria so that's going to be quite a job there once they're done with that they'll move down on the oops back to the bottom floor here they will have done all these always they know how to move into these rooms and see where we want to go from there uh let me just go back and get a couple things here so obviously you know this happened at the end of the holiday break so we had to go virtual with the student body for the first eight

days of January at first eight school days of January we had the three humans who were housed at Eastmont they started in person down in the Crestview building last week about 40 students in the total dinner uh so the first day for the remaining students was today always have states to give an update on that uh so we had the basketballs with those who are bust you know the buses just picked them up a few minutes earlier and transported them directly or those who walk or carpool to the school they met there and then it was not a they're not assigned to a specific bus but we have five buses there that's what it's it looks like it's been okay it will then transport them down transport them back at the end of the school

day pretty much full school day long walks seven classes going uh yeah Furniture in all the rooms thank you to our purchasing and our facilities again the cafeteria Sebastian his crew Board of election Reserve lunch there today so regular school so we're always grateful that's billions turned in many has been a big benefit over the years what we have it now too uh student learning again any student that had a Chromebook that didn't take it home over the holiday break and make sure they had one making sure we get all the curriculum copies out on the instruments big thank you to Jordan High we were down several that we think we're only down about one saxophone and then guitar six or eight guitars right now so big thank you on that with that for their

help there uh we'll need to look at renting the rest there's going to be so many things that Stacy and her team come up with example not throws out one by one uh the support the schools giving a timeline you know right now as we met we think the best right now would probably be again two to three based on their schedule what they did on the top floor it's going to be two to three weeks doing uh about two weeks cleaning these Halls then they'll go up to the middle floor and it'll be about two weeks there two to three weeks there timing that out that's about five weeks or the end of February before we're looking at getting even into these rooms here now what we've looked at is okay can we with

the gym floor we know that's going to take a little longer in the auditorium if we don't use those how long will it take to clean these other rooms here you know the band and Orchestra room and the weight rooms you know those areas there how long but we do think we're going to be a wow I don't I can't give it a specific date right now building and that would probably be without the auditory man in the gym there's where we're at with the timeline we'll answer any questions we could just give Stacy a few minutes on where accomplishments up swirl her out and how the first day went yeah um our teachers and our staff have worked tirelessly to get everything ready um the amount of things that were in that building that

had to be moved and shuffled and vacuumed and cleaned and scrubbed was incredible and they just worked with a smile on their face I know Karen was in there and got to see a lot of them doing stuff but my teachers just rallied because they think that the most important thing is being able to teach their students in person um we were able to have a great first day today our students the buses was not an issue they were all on time they were all able to leave on time we didn't have any stranded children which was a great thing um it's just been a great thing um Friday we had a whole bunch of our students came in and they decorated the school and wasn't something prompted they did it on their own and

it just made the school liven up and feel like Eastmont and we had a red white and blue day today for these months so um it was just a school again and they actually keep saying we're just glad that we get to come back and we're just glad we get to beat with people so I think that that was a huge win having the ability to come over and do this my teachers are absolute rock stars they walked in to teach with a computer and they've been super patient to get technology in place because they had taken out all the projectors in the schools and moved them to a different school so it was like is it going to get in is it going to get in but everything has has fallen into place um

Peruvian Park left some books behind so our library actually looks like a library even though they may not be the books that our kids would check out but once but once we have access to the top floor we'll be able to do like we actually did during covid where our students have a list and they can check out the books and then we can go over and get those books and bring them over like once a week um our art teacher has been so creative because all of her supplies are on that bottom floor um she's just come up with all these new projects and she's just started over and it's been great my band teacher ordered a whole bunch of Wooden Spoons and we found extra garbage cans because there was two elementary schools

there and they're all learning rhythm um no matter what instrument you play for the next little bit until we get all the instruments you're going to learn Rhythm which will really help with our school song hopefully because we cannot pop on the beat um I don't know it's just been a bonding experience for our staff I know that sounds weird but in a crisis our staff comes together and so it's it's an awesome thank you good not really awesome he's been awesome the awesome rock stars thank you Stacy her team Taylor and Brooke and everyone else has made that happen so with that but not to text any questions you questions board members Mr millerberg um asbestos in its undisturbed state is not harmful that's what we're told and you know the term that I'm

familiar with is friable which is what it's pulverized it goes out in the air and that's what happened you mentioned that you had 23 employees in there at the time they were removing tile do we have concern for those 23 employees yeah so what we did is on that letter we said you may want to seek your health provider usually this type of issue you know it does not manifest itself until several years even a couple decades after exposure we wanted them to make sure they're aware of that yeah yeah serve everybody and as far as students are current concerned we had zero students that would have been exposed um those are my big concerns and that's not you know where you're going your big concern is to make sure the kids learn something and

you know congratulations on the Monumental effort to make that happen but I was I was just concerned about that one part that I didn't see it come out yeah we sent him a letter we wanted uh what's going on more dogs but uh that's it was a sample like said that said we've been ordered we want you to be notified that you haven't could have been exposed you know they some were only there a few minutes some were there all day right so buried on them you know have some may have only been on the top floor and where it happened on the bottom floor somewhere downstairs the clock is ticking for the next 20 to 30 years so just as a reference point I know it's necessary but how much has does this additional

cleanup cost and also how much is is there are there any additional busing um expenditures for the additional distance or as it kind of is bussing costs neutral at this point you know it's more we are transported by buses modes of kids uh there'll be more running from these one down to the curse of you no it's not on fairly long ways but it's a ways so that is a pause there also polls some of our mechanics and dispatchers and other people do these in a place yeah uh the biggest costs but now they have a vertical bit out there [Music] that's just for the cleanup or the abatement associated with neither asbestos correct no that's for eign right because you had to pull that out that's all included in that that is okay we

like you say I really think the gym floor was a couple hundreds yeah so so the gym floor is included in the purchase bid again we want to emphasize we don't think that's the last bit you can the other question questions I don't have a question I just have a comment I've tried to be down at Eastmont a lot I almost feel like I should get a shirt too in the front office okay so yeah anyway um I I've just been very impressed with not only the school staff they have great morale they're really excited okay excited to get back to sort of normal as long as you're not online it's good you know what I mean it's good for the kids it's good for them so for all of their mental health you know

feelings both students and staff I'm happy that they we've been able to find a place that they could go to relatively easily and I have to double book a building that would have been horrendous um and then I was very impressed at how many resources were involved in that and I I'm just thrilled I just wanted to say thank you to the district and I'm going to say this again in the main meeting but it's it's been eye-opening and it's been um a positive I think our community needs to know that our schools help each other because you've had multiple schools you were telling me different schools offering items that you needed not just band equipment or all of the schools in the area have chipped in to whatever they need you know they may

need and that's what our District's about is that we support one another and we care about each other and we can pull together when we really really makes a difference and I'd like to see that kind of interaction continue but thank you for putting up with all that wasn't anyone's fault but they've just say thank you from the board we've been all right let's speak for Nancy Nancy says tell your people and there's not a department in this District that hasn't done something to help us I was impressed by the list it's it's amazing and I will say you know from the board we appreciate all the effort that you and your staff and and as Karen was mentioning the other departments other schools when we talk about the Canyons family this is a good

illustration of what that means and we're very appreciative and I think we all wish it didn't didn't happen but it's nice to know that there are Sports and people willing to pitch in when things like this do happen but please extend our appreciations thank you any other questions or comments for it yeah we wish you the best and thank you grateful that things went well today in Hillsborough continues to be the case for however long you need to be there and if you can relate the school to a hashtag the kids do really well finding their classes part of the hashtag are you yes yes exactly it is laid out that way about from nine square huh I have to say I was down there with Stacy today he had a brand new teacher start

today oh wow father's teacher I thought when she walked up to us I thought she's a student so a little bit of baptism by fire for her but uh we're great for for uh her staff everyone there is thank you thanks for the update okay next on the agenda be an update on the life skills field test and I will turn the time over to Dr Brian McGill director of student services for that up it gives that update and please Dr Miguel if you have other uh both here to help out with the presentation please introduce them thank you president C and uh Cannon School Board Dr Robbins um a lot of great memories looking at that Eastmont floor plan I actually attended that school as did my wife as did my daughter Stacy had

her at the time but she went through and I spent a lot of time down on that basement floor so some good memories there um for tonight just to kind of kick things off uh with Dr Martin Luther King's Junior's uh Reserve day being here for day and human rights day a particular quote that really resonates with me um that he won't share it and that is the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education I thought that quote was very fitting tonight as we talk about character education and helping our kids Thrive so Thrive time was this kind of the word the buzzword that we've used to describe the product we recognize that if we go out at

some point to license or sell we've got to have a catchy title or catchy theme to it versus just CSD live scores um so anyways that's that's kind of what we've been referring to it as I know you guys have seen this many times over um but these are our critical competencies and our focal points that we're focused on and helping our kids out with um and you've had a lot of opportunity to digest that we'll walk through the timeline um so on January 10th we went live with the beta testing site I actually emailed that link out to the board today as well as the password so you can access that and kind of navigate through what's available right now um January 11th the following day we happen to have our counselors our psychologists

and our social workers all here on site for professional development so we actually utilized that time on that morning to walk them through the system and provide training so that they have an in-depth knowledge base as they go back to work with principals and teachers in their schools this Thursday we've got leadership and level meeting so we'll be presenting the first overview of the new website and the navigation the principles uh We've created a Google form to capture School grade level and unit interests because we recognize that some of the schools might have different varying parts that they want to participate in um we're also looking at uh we've created a survey that also captures information on each lesson which we'll walk through kind of a demonstrated example of that on February 2nd we're providing

an additional training for principals and by the way Amber was going to be here tonight she was going to interject as well he's actually really sick she's at home so she sent her regards to me so she's not here tonight I set my regards back because that was me exactly one week ago I'm just glad that I'm able to stand before you and be healthy tonight versus where I was last Tuesday um so we wish for the best hope she uh heals up good uh so we're providing an additional training on February 2nd which is our next leadership level meeting day um we'll train the principals and our SEL Wellness staff so that they in turn can train the teachers on a time that timeline it makes the best sense for them on which they

can work it in um sending information home for students and parents about opt-in opt out we've had some dialogue and conversations around the best approach to do this um you know there's the management piece and the supervision piece for kids that opt out and so we thought maybe with the field test to give parents the opportunity right up front to either opt-in or out you just keep the participation levels um pretty level so that our teachers know week in and week out what kind of supervision they need to provide where they're sending students as they're trying to manage their classroom and teach the lessons but we're open to feedback on that um and then begin field testing lessons with refinement as input is received uh we're still continually reviewing lessons right now so as you

go through the beta site you'll see a lot of the lessons are on but not all of them because we're still going through that review process with our teams uh and then April the hope and plan is to present a full adoption before the school board for next school year so that's kind of the timeline that we laid out as you go to the website this is basically um oops part of the home page so we've got five time skills for Scholars there written within that is the board rule that identifies that we should be providing these particular lessons curriculum and looking at critical competencies which are the units and then at the very bottom of that it talks about the lessons and the QR code that we've provided at the end of every lesson

so that parents teachers patrons community members can provide feedback so that we can take that into account as we're making modifications through the field test for next year's full curriculum um so kind of walking you through the website it's very basic really straightforward this is housed on the student services uh page so what I've done here is I just pulled a drop down for first grade and uh clicked on building resilience which is the first drop down there and that provides an opportunity for the teachers to jump right into the lessons itself um we've gone through this before so I don't I won't spend a whole lot of time on this but again it kind of outlines the the little targets uh the success criteria and the fortune of a graduate tie-in the Strategic initiative

tie-in key vocabulary words of the keys kids need to know uh notes for the teacher materials um the grading for the lesson itself uh sharing so in this case in this particular example they're doing a partner share on uh understanding what's important as far as rules in school and why they should abide by them um and then the learning activity and then a message for the students at the end of the class to kind of wrap things up um practice and reinforcement so for example at this particular lessons teachers are finding that they're having trouble with kids following rules in class for example and expectations this might be a good lesson to pull out or at least bring them back to as part of a reminder um there's some application principles as far as different

gains that they can play with the kids so things such as red light green light Simon says all games that we're very familiar with uh reflection piece for the students and then like I said there's a QR code down here at the bottom which we'll walk through the information and the QR code um so you can see it asks the identifier up front of your teacher parent Community member and then it walks them through which lessons they want to provide feedback on so looking at each grade level uh to what degree did you review the lessons it was a lifer skill associated with that so we can actually drill down the particular lesson um was your student did they participate in the actual lessons yes or no and then we've provided a couple of open-ended

responses as well which we found through our parent advisory groups they had a lot of just commentary right that we've gone through and made a lot of edits to um some we've Incorporated some we haven't just kind of depends on where the developed little team felt like we needed to to land but in essence it provides them with an opportunity to provide some open-ended feedback so um here I just pointed an arrow here to the critical competencies so we've got a link to again the units uh the structure of the lesson itself again these are intended for about a 15-20 minute lesson per week Elementary and Middle School level um and then just tying it back into the developmental targets uh so in this case the relevance is helping students build resilience um you know

within themselves and being able to handle stress you know control impulses motivate themselves persevere overcome obstacles which we all know in this room our youth need more than ever and then it provides the actual developmental targets K2 three five and six eight so pretty much what I got questions I can help answer yeah Karen this looks awesome um I went through the first grade curriculum sample that you gave me it gave us and I found it was very helpful um and that is exactly what you would be doing but the 15 to 20 minutes not gonna happen but I wondered is it intended to be done all in one shot or can you spread that out um do a piece of it here a piece of it here and a piece of it here and

then just make sure you've covered it all in a week what is this help is intended to be a quick lesson with the students um like middle of the week but as most good teachers or Educators would do they would pull in the relevance when it applies with different levels of learning and different needs that they have within a good class I know as a teacher I would have referenced it over and over and over for that given week and if we found ourselves in a school year where it's like all right we need to pull this lesson back out again and you know for having issues with respecting others in class things of that nature so I just know with first graders if you're going to play any of those games five minutes you

have to play it so everybody gets their turn and doing the thing but that's okay because you could do pieces of it you know along the way so I just wondered what pacing was so if we did one of those lessons all year long we would have covered all those competencies we've provided a layer of about six day lessons per Topic in unit by grade so there's a plethora of them to be able to choose from it looks really good thank you appreciate that I just know the timing is always optimistic it is it's been a push I mean it's okay yeah like I said over and over it's mid-summer and it's I mean our department team meeting today we spent the whole second half of our department meeting just through the beginning lessons uh

that we were behind on so yeah yeah I mean kudos to the student services team we're a small unit of about six seven Specialists um but ISD has has been an integral part in all of this uh amber John and Laura in particular um you know our mtss has gone through review lessons so it's truly been a collaborative effort and it's taken everyone to get to where we're at so and I find that every product that our district has ever created is far superior to anything you've ever bought ever saves US money but but it also matches our goals and that we know our students we know what their needs and I um impressed with the uh professionalism of it it it's not perfect yet but then it's brand new but I know that as

we've worked this through as a teacher I found that everything our district created itself far was far superior to what we were given by the state or someone else so compliments to ISD and all others so thank you Karen sure so thank you so much I think I'm really excited for this I think it is great um so my question is so are we just allowing schools and teachers to opt in through the field testing we're not telling everyone they have to do it right I mean how's that going to work build test on Thursdays I go into level meetings we're going to ask each of the principals we're going to give them a couple of week timeline between uh this Thursday and February 2nd to fill out the Google form and that form is

very straightforward it just asks them to identify their school if they're interested in participating the grade level or levels if they're doing it you know full school or particular grades that they want to seek out um and then also the units themselves because you may have some schools that it's like we're going to do these two units okay so I'll hopefully by February 2nd I'll we'll have a really good idea of how many schools are going to be participating and to what degree and what level so that way we can provide is needed as well and as they go through and field test um you know just as I showed you with that QR code that we have set up um it's going to allow us to basically get ongoing feedback and input from everyone

so like today I had an email from a parent just asking about where we were at the updates and um you know I was able to to let this parent know that you know there's going to be a QR code on every lesson so the parent wanted to provide feedback on every lesson that parent could certainly choose to do it and that that was another question so it's every teacher expect to do that QR code every time or just when they want to oh it's just if they want to do something it's not required to find the lesson or if there's some scaffolds that you're like we could add in to adjust it or make it better or improve it they can provide that but it's not required thank you this is really excited plans

I actually love the structure of the feedback and that it's simple it's a QR code and that we're really it adds another layer of not just transparency but taking into account that teachers and their expert opinion they may have something to share and contribute to elevate the lesson or parents if they've got a child that has anxiety or different issues so I really love that the other thing I love is I love the structure of the lesson how the teacher introduces it and does the greeting and then at the end wraps it up again and I think that's pretty awesome I love I I looked through all the units I had a couple questions so the the units that you click on that are like Sesame Street that's through wonders I didn't is that through

wonders because we said that through some of it we were it was wonders you know how we're using like for kindergarten wonders but then when I clicked on it at the top it has like Sesame education Workshop which is like part of PBS that logo is that somehow tied to wonders I was just once you did a big part of the kindergarten at first okay so we're supplementing that from wonders right because when I looked through wonders I didn't see any partnership with Sesame so that's something we're supplementing okay and then the other question I had was um I really loved the unit on making mistakes because I know that was something I asked for that we could talk about with the kids because we always talk about the ideal and sometimes they get really

stressed when they don't reach that and I have just a little a little thing um a verbiage so let me see on the mistakes it actually says mistakes happen to all of us and I was thinking it would maybe be better to say we all make mistakes because it's they're again only taking ownership so that was a little silly thing it's in the message where the teacher says Dear class today we learned about mistakes which lessons it's uh it's the one on mistakes I don't know I'll have to go ahead and change it okay yeah because because earlier in the lesson it talks about taking personal responsibility and I thought oh we just need to change that verbiage so it's not like you're the victim mistakes happened but we all make mistakes so anyway but

I loved it and um I'm super excited about and with each lesson I clicked on I got more and more excited for our children chats and authors and Architects look at it strictly from an honesty-based perspective in creating somebody's license because I know that's part of the feedback yes of it thank you so much and thank all your team the people I have and continue like today in department meetings good opportunity to tell them thanks again so it's been a lot of work so but very rewarding at the same time I mean as we look at things like discipline referrals and behavioral issues we're having in class you know is really the number one problem not only in our district but across the state Across the Nation I really think with teachers and students having

engagement time to actually have some of these active discussions and activities and lessons focused on helping better the lives of our kids and you know correspondence with school as well as just in life in general again kind of going back to Dr Martin Luther King's quote you know it's that character within education that creates intelligence over time so that's our whole control so we can minimize referrals help teachers with discipline you know behavioral issues in class and that kids can take something meaningful out of this and be more intrinsically motivated in school as they go you know grade level to grade level so okay these results so I I love and appreciate so much of this I one of the things I like about it is that because it is our own like we have

the ability if we see some sort of persistent issue that arises in the future say like a year or two now we can quickly address that and turn on a diamond and move forward with it which I think is great um I do have a question as far as the parent group is concerned are they done or are you still retaining them as kind of a resource you held three parent nights and through all the lessons collectively um as you might you know understand like some of the parents could come some nights some parents can can come others but we held two to two and a half hour sessions over those three nights um I did let the parent advisory group know that I had Chromebooks in my department if they wanted to invest and

spend additional time I welcomed them in to be able to come through and do further reviews and think so choose to do that but by having the QR code any and all parents across the district are going to have an opportunity to go online look it up live provide feedback as they best see fit and it's really transparent I I which is important I appreciate that very transparent well and the other thing that I I just want to comment you on and I know this has been a point of discussion before is that we're not getting into a place where the teachers are becoming defective therapists right I mean they are teaching soft skills that are approachable and appropriate for any child to be learning and I think we'd be hard-pressed to find parents that

would really struggle with some of these basic principles that I think are going to be helpful in the classroom and we we stressed and emphasized that with our Wellness staff when we had our professional development so that they in turn can help our administrators and our teachers be able to recognize that and refer when and where needed things tend to share overshare we want to make sure that they're getting proper supports great thank you thank you any other comments or questions um I I had one question about the so this field test window and and you describe the timeline when principles will be given an opportunity to fill out a spreadsheet of which ones they want to do and I'm really grateful that you guys are tracking that and paying attention to it um what

if there's certain segments or grade levels that at this point nobody signs up to do field tests as they're I do too because really our window's only three months and this is a whole Year's worth of curriculum you know several elementaries and middle schools that are interested in doing it so my hope is that with a few of those signing on for the full lesson scope or at least breaking some of them up like having some school start with you two others with three others with four so on and so forth so we can get more feedback as a whole um kind of give some guidance how they sign up I really encourage that with the group I think it's important to cover as much ground as we possibly can in during this build test

and again I mean these are principles that are going to help kids Thrive right in classroom in school and life and I think you know our principles most of them I think recognize that by instilling something like this it is going to bring about improvements as it relates to discipline which is going to help them in their job stay in and day out help teachers with Behavioral Management and having kids make connections with one another is critically Mr millerberg I want you to know by me sitting here Silent not really joining in but not me I'm dancing what you're doing it's just that as you come around the table I don't know that I have anything more productive to add when everybody else has said but I'm really on board with what you're doing it's

exciting and it's good stuff it's great and as a man you know put it we have control of our own products which I think is essential for you I know it's been said before and we recognize the Monumental effort yeah Herculean I think is what plan is [Laughter] so we are very very appreciative and excited ever at this point where we can start seeing some of these lessons being used in classrooms and seeing how it's received appreciate it thanks thank you okay board that concludes our items for the closed session and are not sorry study session okay and so um we will now take a short break and reconvenance in the other room for our business meeting thank you all for being here with those of you here in the room and those will be

listening thank you does everyone have boats like I do one thing about it they're now it's together well no it's okay it's an update like when we yeah for you put something foreign noted that uh my name is Leon Wilcox I'm the business administrator I'll be conducting the first couple items on the agenda tonight we also want to know also note that Mr Andrew edel is joining us remotely Andrew can you hear us I can hear you can you hear me we can hear you thank you for joining in thank you first item we would like to approve the agenda for tonight A January 17th 20th a23 I also want to note that we have added on the consent agenda a new item 8f approval of administrative appointments so if I could have a motion

to approve the agenda for tonight I will move to approve the agenda for tonight as you just stated with those changes to consent I'll second that motion thank you we have a motion and a second all in favor hi hi uh we will now be led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Oak Hollow principle Julie mootz after which uh principal moots will give us some school highlights of Mo call them if I could ever ruined Stan please ready begin I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all well thank you for having me here tonight I'm the principal at Oak Hollow Elementary in Draper and I started writing some things down that I

wanted to share highlight you know of course we are so excited about being an a-rated school we are very excited we work very hard to get that I'm very excited about our French dual immersion program and I started listing some things I'm excited about this I love this about Oak Hollow I've been there for eight years I love this and you know what what I want to share is the people I I love Ocala because our teachers our Paris our custodians people you don't even know come to school every day uh to serve and just to love our children so I wanted to share just a few names that you may not even know but I think these people need to be spotlighted so I want to share Shine the spotlight on Melissa Elms Melissa

Elms has been an intern Mentor for the past four years our school works with UVU and we get interns every year Melissa's come out of the classroom she trains those interns to the outstanding teachers they all pass their edtpa courses and fortunately okalo has been able to hire seven out of the eight of them it would be eight out of eight but I didn't have the FTE but outstanding training and no one knows about that it's just been amazing program I want to shine the light on Jenna Gunderson Jenna is started out as a room parent many years ago she loves Oak Hollow and I don't know what made her do this but became a recent essay I'm like oh my gosh put a needle in my eye Jenna is so gifted out there at

recess she has had training with play works and she now runs our recess coaches and it is a very competitive program at our school kids want to be involved I want to shine the light on Jason Brown Jason Brown is one of our Behavior assistants he's been with us for about six years when they started the behavior assistance program um Jason runs our check-in checkout program we call soar he's also one of our recess aides so he started what they call the eagle ref program so for third fourth and fifth graders he trains them on the games build some leadership skills and the kids go out there and they can be a referee for a game at recess they love it oh my gosh they love it um I'd like to shine the light on

Tracy Gerard our gifted school counselor Tracy saw a real issue with kids that it was one thing to say use kind words but really address bullying and took a program from pbis.org stop walk and talk and has taught that to all of our students so all of our students have that language that common language now that we're using at Ocala and it's really reducing the bullying that we're seeing and increasing the kindness so like I think more than anything I won't go on and on because I think I could just keep going with this person and that person but I want to thank you for your support of the French dual immersion program um for play works for our brain boosters thank you for supporting those things and thank you for letting me share a

few things about Oak Hollow thank you principal moods uh as a please extend your thanks to all your students your staff at your community at Oak Hollow as a parent there we want to thank you as well for everything that you do and finally go Bengals for the rest of the playoffs uh I'm now going to of course move down here for item four this is um reorganization of board leadership so every uh this is part of our policy or policy 100.1 I'll just read that by state statute in the first business first board business meeting of January following a general election the board elects a president and vice president served a two-year term the board May appoint other officers from time to time following established procedure here and and according to Utah code no

extra compensation power or authority is giving to the board officers than that for the other board members except for a sector set forth in board policy so as we go about organizing this uh the last several years we have gone a revision to this policy instead of having a we've always had a board president but instead of having just one vice president we've had two vice presidents so if the board wishes to continue that practice we would need to have an motion a second and a vote to continue that on so uh and also would suggest that they'd be vice presidents instead of a first vice president and second vice president so if anyone would like to make that motion if not we would just go with the one vice president yes would it be

appropriate to have discussion before a motion is made since no motion is on the floor I would say yes right now because for the last uh several elections I have been vehemently opposed to having a second vice president and I just wanted before we have a motion or anything and I just wanted to speak to that issue and let you know that I have changed my mind on that uh what you just read I reread that the board May appoint others as they deem necessary from time to time and so I'm I'm I will just acquiesce and not oppose the second vice president this time thank you so noted so with that still is there any and every time I put it out it would lose six I would lose six one so I would

like to like to we um as a board have two vice presidents and could I also they would just be vice president not person second yes okay we have a motion by Mrs schill is there a second of that motion the second bye uh Mrs Pederson any discussion of the motion see I like discussion sorry that's what I mean um I I mean I just want to point out for the last 10 years our board has had two vice presidents and that it has served us well and we have a large district and it takes a lot of work to be in board leadership and it is good to have two and just to share the love thank you all right so any other discussion with the motion I also want to make sure Mr

edelkan here as well so I can I do not have any comments thank you so with that I'll call call the motion all in favor bye any opposed unanimously so now let's go to the the election of the officers so again this is following the policy uh the following procedures this is I'm going to read this right out of the policy the following procedure is utilized for electing one officer at a time will be used for selecting a board member to serve for each office the nominations any board member member may not make a nomination for any office including the nomination of oneself nominations do not need to be seconded a motion a second and a vote will close the nominations voting to be elected an officer a nominee must receive the majority of votes

cast voting shall be by rays of hand since Mr edel I cannot see you can you guys oh I can see you now okay so we can see your I can see you there now thank you uh candidates for an office shall be voted on according to the order of nominations the first nominator to receive the majority of the votes cast he's elected to the office and the voting for that office ceases is there any questions before we begin Cena we will now go proceed with the nominations for office of board president is there any nominations Mr Wilcox I would like to make a nomination please I would like I would like to nominate Amber schill for president of the Board of Education and I would like to speak to that nomination Michelle has served

on this board for eight years and is beginning her third term she has served as a vice president for four years and she recently completed four years in leadership of usba she has the experience and the abilities to successfully lead the operations of the board and I am confident that her dedication to the success of the board and of annian school district will serve our district well I would like to second the motion and express uh sincere gratitude to our current board president Mrs Nancy team thank you emotions do not Abomination do not need to be seconded but still noted is there any other nominations for Canyon's War brother seen them would anyone like to make a motion to close the nominations and these would need to be seconded I'll make a motion to close

I'll suck enough and we will need to have a vote so any discussion to the motion scene none all in favor say aye aye aye raise hands sorry raise up hands we all have the motion carries set and zero congratulations to Mrs Amber schill as our new Canyons board president we'll now move to the we will now move to the office of vice president again we'll have two of these are there any Nomine I would like to make yes yeah there was a motion just closed in close to the Lord oh did we not then needed to vote on the closing of them okay it did I'll say I am when we close it we're just closing nominations and then we vote correct yeah so that's the right order we do need to go on

closing it which we did not yet that is on me okay the the accountant does not always run the meetings the best right so let's go back yeah and it's only once every two years you're doing pretty well we will how do can we go go back and close the nominations we there were no discussions so all in favor to close the nominations for board president I I raise of hand those who vote for Mrs Amber schill again that is by unanimously thank you thank you Cindy uh uh and Andrew voted is on moving to the vice president is there any nominations I'd like to make a nomination why don't we have Mr edel make the nominee his nomination first go ahead Andrew I'd like to nominate Amanda Oaks as vice president uh Amanda has

uh served uh in board leadership uh for a number of years uh a couple years now and has done a phenomenal job I believe that she's got the dedication and impartiality to serve all members of the board uh diligently and and well thank you so noted are there any other nominations for vice president I would like to nominate montmillerberg he's served on the board for a number of years and I feel that he would do a good job okay I also want to clarify so there'll be two nominations for this uh for the vice president do you want to nominate him now before we vote or do you want to continue with this nomination so we would if it was close it would be Amber and not voting against each other just so does that

make sense or any other well I should say is there any other nominations besides those two I I would like to add some discussion to the floor can we do that before I know yeah just to clarify there will be two vice presidents who only voting on one right now yeah so okay I thought we were just going to do it all at once or not okay well I have some thoughts on the nomination for vice president but I don't know if I could wait and you do subject at hand so I will simplify it and I will simply decline that nomination thank you for nominating me but I will simply decline that at this time okay are there any other nominations I just want to make sure everybody's not do I have a can

I have a motion to close the nomination for this vice president [Music] Okay so after this if there are no more nominations [Music] and then we can have discussions either voting on The Rundown right well I have some discussion because I'm very torn because I know after this we only get one more so I thought I'll just share this I thought I had was the wisdom in having fun there's three people because Nancy I think would also do a great job as a vice president since she's been president for so long as far as helping it's kind of like what the usba does with past president so that's something I want to bring up in dialogue maybe before we conduct all the nominations and I don't know maybe Nancy is ready to pass with baton

but I see a lot of wisdom in that because I would think that she'd be referred to for advice often and I think that you know Mont in the past has said that one of his concerns with the three board leadership is that your near majority and so if Nancy is referred to often and there's three and then Nancy's referred to you know then it is majority and so if you know there's going to if if that if there's wisdom and Prudence in that I can see why that could be an advantage as well to have first vice president so just opening it up to dialogue and what you feel about that Nancy thank you I I appreciate the kind words that I I will decline that um author of a nomination and I will

um commit to the board and the new leadership that I won't intervene or interfere or I won't be a part of it I will just I will be serve my role as a board member so with that we do have a nomination for Mrs Oakes as one of the vice presidents is there a I should open it up is there any other nominations for this one knowing that there will be another one but not because I have a motion to close I chose to make a motion to close motion made by Mrs Peterson is there a second I will second second by Mrs tingey any discussion of this motion seeing none all in favor say aye aye they will now vote um there we go um Mrs Oaks as the vice president please show by

raise of hand Mr edela again that nomination is unanimous so congratulations Mrs Owens thank you so now I'll have the office of the other vice president again any nominations can come forth with the exception of a new board member new board president Mrs shield and Mrs Oakes I would like to nominate Mr montmorberg are there any other nominations if not could we have a motion close there's none I'll make a motion to close up is there a second a second by Mr eddle discussion of the motion seeing none all in favor of closing the nominations hi that was a unanimous know we will vote on Mr millerberg as being the other vice president please do so by raise of hand Mr edel okay so again unanimous so congratulations to Mrs Amber Shield the board president

with Mrs Oaks and Mr Middleburg as our vice president if I could just take a brief Liberty I just want to thank Mrs tingey of course so many last four years of service has been our calm Collective tremendous leader of the board and the district so many thanks to you we are all indebted to you for your service especially during the pandemic so thank you very very much for your your service it should be noted that Mrs tingey has been on the board for 10 years she has never not served in board leadership so thank you for 10 a Whole Decade of service to Canyon school district thank you very much with that I will turn the time over to Mr Shield to conduct the balance of the meeting I would suggest we just remain

in our seats for the remainder of this meeting if that's okay and then we can organize next can I make one comment yes if I was sitting out there instead of sitting here or if I was listening I would say that's pretty hokey he's always been a pope that's two vice president and now he's not opposed he gets elected that's what I'd be thinking and that's what I'd be saying well I don't I don't think in hulkiness so I don't I think it is but can I just say that I think that at some point in time I I have completed 10 years on the board at various times I feel I genuinely feel that at some point in time people on the board of education need to step up and do some of the

heavy lifting that goes with board leadership and I am willing to do that and I feel that that is not something I seek after as much as it is that I feel an obligation having Surfers as long as I have and avoided it for as long as I have that I have a responsibility to help with the heavy lifting paleon before we move forward I just like to take the Liberty to express my appreciation to president teeny for her service and um you know I got here in March of 2020 right at the start of the pandemic and I just think back to her great leadership and as you mentioned her her calm Steady Hand um it reminds me of many occasions on the football field as a college athlete in the huddle when you're

down and you need a two-minute drive and all the pressure in the world is on and you step in the Huddle and you you see certain leaders that emerge that just calm the Huddle down and everybody you know points to and knows that that it's going to be okay and that's the type of teammate and leaders that Nancy is has always been and and will be and I just want to thank her on many different levels as a professional and and on a personal level for her great leadership especially during the last two and a half years and also congratulate Amber and Amanda and Mont as we go forward there's a lot of work to be done as we've we've said but we're in a great position to do that so thank you and we

have some flowers for president and for Mrs Shield so I'll bring those over thank you all I don't know what else to say right now okay so I'm going to take over um conducting us the meeting so first I was gonna wait till the end but I feel like I should add my thanks to Nancy um Nancy's been a mentor to me probably for I don't even know Nancy how long 14 years when she was the chair of Brighton SCC and I was the vice chair anyway so she she is incredible and has taught me so much and there is really no one who is more dedicated like I literally I tell everyone she works like 100 hour weeks she literally does she really does um but I I'm humbled and I'm grateful for this

opportunity and I am happy I think she deserves a break it will be very nice for her I mean I didn't even think about the fact of what Leon said and that she's been her leadership for 10 years that is a long time I'm sure she's gonna stay very busy though I mean a lot of the things she loves to do so okay so we're just gonna move ahead on the agenda um the next item is item six recognitions and I'm going to turn time over to Jeff Haney director of communications and Kirsten Stewart associate director of communication thank you president shill it'll be the first time I say that as we recognize the people in Canyon school district who have gone above and beyond and deserve a moment in the spotlight in our recognitions

so thank you again president Shield I'm going to have to get used to that our first record our first honorees tonight are amazing advocates for student musicians and student athletes we give a big shout out to Caleb chavisteri from Alta High School and Scott Stuckey from Hillcrest High School last week they received distinguished Service Awards from the Utah high school activities associations Caleb is the 5A music educator of the year and Scott is the 5A Coach of the Year Caleb as you may well know is the advisor for the Alta High marching band and leads the instrumental music program for the Hawks earlier this year the Hawks won first place in the regional bands of America contest and you'll see here Mr Stuckey has been the track and cross-country coach for decades a long long

time he served Hillcrest for a very long time served student athletes for a very long time he's inspired a lot of students to keep reaching for that finish line so congratulations to both Caleb and Scott for winning distinguished Service Awards from High School Activities Association we also tonight want to wish good luck to our drill teams over the next couple days the Alta La sells the bright acadians The Corner Canyon Shirelles the Hillcrest drill and Jordan high charlonians are ready to face their region competitors on Wednesday Corner Canyon competes at Pleasant Grove High on Thursday Brighton Alta and Jordan compete at Jordan high and on Saturday Hillcrest buys for the region trophy at Cedar Valley high school so congrats good luck to all of our drill teams both the Brighton and Hillcrest are ranked in

the top 10 in 5A so we're hoping for the best for the ladies on our drill teams we also want to wish good luck to the cheer squads at our high schools this is the first year that cheer is a sanctioned sport through the Utah High School Activities Association so our teams of gymnasts and dancers and they really are top tier athletes have a chance to make history and claim those trophies at the upcoming State competitions the state tournaments for our our cheer squads will be January 25th and January 27th at Utah Valley University so good luck to Alta Brighton Corner Canyon Jordan and Hillcrest squads also we want to recognize the achievements of this school Community we talked about Eastmont in the study session we certainly cannot pass up this opportunity to notice the

hard work and dedication of the entire Eastmont School Community who works so hard to move to a new location in a matter of days you'll see a picture there of principal Kurt's house I snapped that of her as I was walking toward the school today she says she found the stop sign in the school and used it today as the crossing guard which I thought was pretty darn cool she stayed outside the school in the rain in the snow until well after the bell ring to make sure every student who got there even if they got there late was welcomed by the principal and it was like that all across the school this is the day that Eastmont students return to in-person learning since they left for winter recess in mid-December and it was like

the first day of school except it wasn't 100 degrees temperature outside students were so excited to be in school with their teachers with their friends and yes it was a new location but they were just as excited Spirits were incredibly High we have to thank all of the teachers the staff at Eastmont as well as Canyons districts departments all who worked so hard in just a matter of a few days to get Crescent you ready to house the East one students we had the purchasing department getting suitable Furniture we had the I.T Department making of a high-tech connections the transportation department doing the arranging for the busing and routing custodial and Facilities getting the building ready and nutrition services department making sure that the kitchen and the cafeteria were ready for breakfast and lunches and

of course the teachers who put their classrooms together really quickly it certainly does take a village to get a school up and running we're so proud that Eastmont is part of our village so thank you to the entire Eastmont Community for pulling together in that time and our next honoree is Dr Bob dowdle who's the first ever assistant superintendent of the Canyon school district now it's been said that when the history books recount the start of canyons District Dr dowdle is sure to play a pivotal character in the success of the First new school district to be created in Utah in nearly a century Dr dowdle's influence has been felt since he was first appointed assistant superintendent in December of 2008. and his influence will be felt long after he retires as one of the

district's top administrators recently Dr dowdle announced that he will be ending his career in canyons and in public education at the end of this school year as I've noted Dr dowdle was one of the very first administrators of Canyon school district he has held the position of assistant superintendent since 2008 and during his time at Canyon's District get this he has touched nearly every part of our organization throughout the years one time or another he's overseen almost every major department in Canyon's District including schools facilities Information Technology curriculum student services federal state programs research and assessments special education nutrition services and transportation and during his time in Canyons District graduation rates have risen 7 percent starting teacher salaries have gone up by twenty thousand dollars in the past six years two general obligation Bonds were

approved the district underwent a massive grade reconfiguration and we clicked quickly pivoted to remote learning during a global pandemic Dr dowdle served as a key voice in all of those achievements we honor him tonight and we'll do so throughout the end of the year and especially at the retirees banquet we want to recognize him after he announced his retirement so thank you Dr dowdle for all of your contributions to Canyon school district we will miss him his guidance and certainly is institutional knowledge about Canyon school district so president chill thank you for the time that you have granted US during board meeting to honor those who have gone above and beyond in creating the world-class District in Canyons thank you thank you thank you so much okay we have now come to the patron comment

portion of our meeting the board often designates time in meetings to listen to the patrons of the district Patron comment time is limited to Residents and taxpayers of canyons District students and parents of students and current employees of the district patrons May provide board members with written documents these documents may be submitted to the board secretary at the meeting she's right over there or email to the office of public Communications by noon of the day following the board meeting tonight individuals will be given three minutes those representing groups will be given five comments made during Patron comment are part of the public record it is the board's practice to listen and take notes during Patron comments the board of education does not discuss matters that are not on the meetings agenda nor engage in public

comment on individual students to protect their privacy or employee issues if a patron wants to comment on a District's employees character professional confidence or mental or physical health the board requests that those comments be submitted to the board in writing however if a patron determines to verbally comment on those personal issues the comments need to be civil and refrain from personal attacks insults defamatory or slanderous comments about an individual the Board of Education would like to make it clear that critical race theory is not a part of the curriculum being used by Canyon school district there are no plans to incorporate it into the curriculum or instruction in Canyon schools the Board of Education values input on all sides of issues to maintain decorum and respect we ask that those in attendance refrain from Applause

or other types of demonstrations during the patron comment time as well as throughout the meeting tonight we have two patrons that have signed up the first is Nicole Ford and then Anna mcnamer so please come up Nicole foreign okay thank you they really have done an amazing job my name is Nicole I'm a parent to a child at Eastmont Middle School I serve as the vice chair of the SCC at Eastmont as well I have a few questions and concerns um I wanted to ask and bring up today with asbestos getting into the HVAC system what is the planner time frame to replace that why is this not being talked about or addressed Why did no one in that meeting in there ask about student safety letters were sent to 23 individuals to seek professional

medical attention and yet we just want to scoot our kids back into that building why is no one talking about the potential contamination of the auditorium seats or the HVAC system or every single Supply in the building at Eastmont I want to express my frustration as to how this incident was handled by the district serving at Eastmont on the SCC I was privy to know how bad Eastman's entire School building as a whole is let alone the mountains of issues in the basement the principal there tried year after year to get many serious issues fixed at Eastmont to no avail it has been it has been so bad that Sandy wreck won't even play basketball there due to the safety concerns with everything that's being said and put out to parents as I understand it

now you as a district yet again are setting aside the safety of our students and Educators and placing them back in a potential hazardous building I'm not understanding this um if this is not the case and not your intentions communicate with us as parents help us to understand you you represent us help us because as of now this is what we're seeing looking at we are depending on each one of you guys I can't do what you guys do I am a nobody mom who does nothing but be a mom and and I need you I need your help I'd like to know what plan or recourse you have for parents like myself who refuse to place my child my child at risk someone has to stand up for these kids they've been set aside

and put at the bottom of your list year after year because of low enrollment numbers or different demographics than your Draper middle or Albion schools or whatever reasons of the district you've set aside or saw to deny proper safety what options are you making available to parents who refuse to have their child go back into Eastmont and will not consider online education as education at all will you be making permits readily available for families like mine I don't feel random samples here and there is sufficient proof that our children and educators are safe if this was your child or you working day in and day out at Eastmont is what they're doing sufficient for your safety for your child's safety I do not believe so I thank you for your time and consideration on the

matter I fully expect a plan or parent options to be communicated to us and made available thank you okay thank you Anna I put on these high heels today so that I would look less tired dressing up does a great job of hiding exhaustion but you can't see my legs so I guess that doesn't matter you can't see a lot of things that go on in our schools and when you don't see those things it makes Educators feel like they don't matter our Educators School support staff and Community workers often feel like their needs don't matter but the answer to most of your needs is staring the board in the face teachers and School staff are exhausted morale is down and mental health really is abysmal there's not enough time for teachers particularly our special

education teachers to meet the needs of Learners access professional development collaborate effectively or work in their classrooms teachers don't have enough time to complete community outreach that we did during the pandemic educators are taking sick days to catch up on paperwork and there aren't enough Subs to fill our positions our students who need the most supports are students with special education needs and they're suffering the most because their teachers are suffering the most again the solution is staring you in the face the solution is to increase virtual learning days currently our school calendar for this year and next year has zero virtual learning days despite the fact that our school surveys show that that would make the single largest difference in teacher satisfaction virtual learning days would allow us to increase prep time and they

would even allow for our district calendar to end the school year before Memorial Day for our upcoming school calendar our custodial staff want virtual learning days so they can catch up on routine Building Maintenance and make our buildings safer virtual learning day is offer the short and lessened option which students already receive on early out Fridays are we concerned about attendance of course but teachers have been modifying content for virtual learning or at home learning for three years for professionals trust us working from home is a 21st century life skill please let our students have the opportunities to practice this skill please give us one virtual Friday each month so we can reach out to our community Implement additional supports for students who need them increased planning time and extend learning opportunities for students seeking

those extra opportunities virtual learning days offer time for classroom or paperwork effective collaboration a study from the University of Utah shows that special education teachers really want two main things a pay increase and more time to complete their tasks virtual learning days increase that time that all teachers desperately need without increasing our school's budget today you're poised to include two additional student no student teacher work days I propose that you add 10 virtual learning days to the proposed calendar put these days on the calendar far in advance so educational staff parents and community members aren't surprised by a pivot virtual learning days are the solution of the problems we're facing the problems are clear and the solution is there for you to act on so we'd like to thank both of you for coming and

sharing your thoughts with the board tonight so the next item on the agenda is the consent agenda so do I have a motion and whoever makes that motion will you please read those items individually and make a motion to approve the consent agenda item a approval of minutes from December 13 2022 board meeting item B approval of hiring termination reports item C approval of purchasing bids item D approval of student overnight travel item e approval of December Financial reports and item F approval of administrative appointments okay thank you is there a second to that mission I'll second it okay thank you is there any discussion to that motion okay so seeing no discussion I will now call for vote um all in favor say aye aye okay that vote is unanimous um so now we're

gonna go on to the next item um item nine is new business and the first item is item a proposal to convert two instructional based professional development days for the 2023-2024 school calendar second reading possible action and Leon Wilcox business administrator will lead that discussion thank you president shiel um we had this discussion back in our first December meeting that was on December 6th so it's been quite a while since we we just want to refresh this to you so it is again looking to convert two days of deeper next calendar next school year not this school year from instructional days to PD days uh that is allowed under Utah code you can do up to four we are right now recommending two in our proposal they can see uh the teacher you know in

FY 20 so it's been a few few years now we the teacher contract was they was taught day was reduced from 188 days to 186 with two days replaced with 16 hours of prep time on their own time uh and so that was included in the base contract so just to emphasize this year students are in person 178 days with two days in the uh fall and spring for the Parent-Teacher conferences so that gets us up to that 180 days required under state law all right just some information that was requested as of last board meeting uh this is the code here which allows that to happen again uh code 53f2-1 or two so you can convert up to 32 hours of instruction or four school days to that many I'm just going to use

the term PD days I wish to note though down under uh under item 2A there the second basically the second paragraph if you will a reallocation of instructional hours or school days under this subsection is subject to approval of two-thirds of the members of the Lea governing board voted in a regular meeting so that would I would have to say that would be a super majority okay so it would take five of you to approve this just not a majority of four uh again if you do it prior to the school you have to give at least 90 days so we would be in compliance with that if during this school year if we were to change that you'd have to give at least two weeks notice due to the covet but that is not

part of our proposal tonight is for this school year I also wanted to note that I've been in contact with the usbe there is not a specific broad rule regarding these two days they're just called part of the r277 419 the pupil accounting rule so they've left it all they've said is they uh it's at the Lea's discretion how those days are used you know I don't have to have a certain amount of meetings or anything like that just has to be for prep or PD there okay again I won't spend a whole lot of time but this comes back from the teacher satisfaction survey done backing we presented this to you back in November again two things is just more prep time you know a high number right after higher salary which is always

usually the top thing but more prep time and it was you know close the gap a little bit but way ahead of all the other items listed there same on uh what supports the resources would make your job easier for you again to teachers more prep collaboration grading days time and you can see quite a distance 313 from 192. and then down on based on the respondents to that uh again Dr Robbins has heard this a lot on his listening tour and again we've heard this from uh our great Educators throughout the district so our proposal is to convert two instructional days to PD days it would be across all three levels staff would be a Well Road proposing be required to be in the buildings but I guess that's up to up to you

uh we propose to add these for next school year at the end of the first and third quarters uh we want to note that the end of the second quarter would be like the day we had just this past Friday which is already a grading slash prep day that day would be for next school year January 12 2024. so here's would be the first day it would be at the end it would be on Friday October 27th uh it's a b day for the high school block schedule you can see it is about a week after the the fall break which is on the yellow there the 19th and 20th which is on the calendar that was approved uh at that same meeting on December 6 last and uh about a month ago here is

the second day it is on Friday March 22nd again the end of the third quarter it's about a week before the spring break again that's also a b day for the block schedule for next school year a couple things so the calendar committee uh and president Shield was on that because on that committee they proposed for next school year keeping it on the 27th the reason being is not launch but I think a few employees have already booked some type of vacation plan for that day that that Monday I mean that for that Spa break the following Monday there has been a proposal that if this state is carried forward into the subsequent years that would be the 24-25 school year and beyond that it be moved to that Monday after the fall break so

essentially fall break would be you know a five-day break again we want to emphasize we feel like this is what benefits the teachers the most is keeping it at the end of the group the term but again it's up to the board's discretion exactly when if we did if you did that moving forward you'd have to look at modifying the policy guidelines on the on the calendar policy and also on the Brighton calendar we'd like have adjusted that on on an annual basis again we're proposing three days you know the fall winter and spring we think we could line up two or three or one or two of those days but we probably couldn't line up all three so we'd have to work with the Brighton Community there on the days of a lineup for

them on a just on an annual basis so with that uh this is you know possible action but we could also bring this back as a kind of more of a also a refresher coming up in that December 16th so I'll take any questions or comments you may have okay just yeah the board we can just discuss and decide what we want to do here um Karen I saw your journey I am 100 in favor of this for next year what I was wondering if it would how difficult would it be to have that one day this year for this last grading period because I know you said you had to have two weeks notice beforehand by code yeah something about that and I know parents are concerned what they would could do with their

children but I have um the thought that maybe we could use some of our parent Educators that normally would the people that may already be in the building on that particular day um just like Eastmont piloted for us um maybe schools could open up um slots for students that have to be you know their parents have nowhere for them to be that they could be in the school and the parent educators could work with them and do um homework support whatever the online people are doing they can help them with that on a limited basis like they did for the um students for um uh that's not what we're that's obviously our board proposal again you'd have to just for this school you'd have to do instead of 90 days it'd have to be 14

days under the code I don't have that whole calendar I was looking to see Steve Diamond was here I'm not sure exactly what day the end of the third term is uh we could easily pull that up on a school calendar the only reason I am because I feel like that teachers are feeling a lot of pressure and this is definitely a needed release of that pressure but the sooner we can get it to them the better they're going to feel about it and I think that they will appreciate it feel it even more significantly if we can do it quicker if we can't then we can't but I just wanted to ask if that was even an option that's a good question obviously the board would have I think as far as we're concerned

as Administration we'll do whatever the board will want I know Mr millerberg also had a raise your hand right I was waiting for presidential to recognize me but that's close to your quote been up um what I'm hearing is these days are not lining up with when the teachers will be doing report cards and Grading no they are they are okay yeah okay for this year we we they don't always line up with the fall break and the spring break that's that's that um I spoke to this issue at our last meeting when it came up but I feel like requiring the teachers to be in the building on those days kind of goes against my grain and all of you painfully are aware I have been married to an educator for over half a

pension you've heard me say that several times and I will promise you that my experience has been that teachers are at home working well into the evening on a regular basis Beyond contract time on a very regular bait and I feel like in recognition for what the teachers do in our classroom the magic they make in our classroom to have them have those two days and not be required to be in the building would go a long ways because you know what the teacher is going to do great the teachers are going to grade homework the teachers are going to do everything teachers do whether you give them those two days or not and to specifically say that it's all going to happen on those two days and to me just kind of ludicrous and

so I feel like the teachers should have the freedom especially when they do start linking up with spring and fall break that they can have some time and go enjoy that time with their family understanding they still have those other responsibilities to get done when they can get them done I'll uh thank you and it should be noted that uh Mary and Chris could kind of say the same thing they've been married to accountants for a long time so okay this is open so if I understand correctly as far as the challenges with the current calendar um as of right now because the elementaries around the trimester system and then the high schools semester system right week it would be difficult for us to line up dates um whereas next year that won't be a

problem correct so I I don't know I mean I'm open to the idea of us having one between now and the end of the year but I think we would probably need the calendar committee to come up as a recommendation on when that would most make sense it goes first okay um speaking to two points I too feel that the teachers don't need to be physically in the building for those two professional days and I and I I've said that before I do feel that um just as Mont said that's very true teachers are definitely working on school and their and their lesson plans and correcting homework and things on their own free time all the time and especially with how much how many hours like our elementary school teachers have been putting into the

letters and all these other things so I'd be very much in favor of thinking of that professional development um as as doing as they see fit and as far as adding a day into the calendar I am all for that and I would suggest that we have the calendar committee meet and look at it I thought it was March 17th is the end of third quarter for the high school and it's a little different for the elementary so but I would be in favor of looking at that as well okay this is teeny um thank you I I too am very very supportive of giving our teachers the time the prep time that they've been asking for um I'm gonna just maybe voice a little opinion a little bit differently about being in the building

um I feel like if we do that it's pretty much we already have um two days now in which we are doing that we're paying them for that to find their own time and from what I've heard from teachers they they want time in the building without students there that they want to be able to access each other as teams and and their files and their supplies and their things like that so um anyway that's just my thoughts on on that piece of it and then as far as adding one in for this day as I read the statue it's the reason there's the 14 day for this year is have it be I'm given due to circumstances within the Lea or a given School due to the Covenant covid-19 pandemic and I recognize that

a lot of what teachers are feeling is repercussions from the pandemic but if this is something that we feel is important instructionally and ongoing we just need to make sure that we feel confident that using the 14-day notification that we feel good about that and I guess that's what I'm saying is this is something they wanted before you know have wanted and needed before the pandemic and will want and need it long after the repercussions are over so I just want to be mindful of that little piece in the statute okay uh yeah Mrs Pederson yes go ahead um I agree with Nancy I really think teachers have had the opportunity to work at home and we have been compensating them with pay but they haven't felt that impact and I think what would be

more beneficial is to be in the building where you have your materials and you have access to teams and it also looks good to the community that if you have a day off or working that you're working um I think if there are exceptions to that if if a teacher has a wedding or you know something going on a that they can't be there that that would be a site-based decision by the principal that they may have permission to work off online but I think that it we stick with the way it's written that they need to be in the building or that as far as this year it's a one-time thing there's just the one day and then after that we fall back into the plan that we've already proposed and that I fully

support okay so just being on the calendar committee um I wanted to say a few things um first of all half the teachers on the calendar committee didn't even know they were getting paid for those two days because that's the thing if they're new I mean we started that years ago and they're not aware of it and we did talk about we need to communicate that better but I really think that it's probably not a good idea to just give it to them because that's going to continue I mean then it would be four days they're getting paid for and they're not in the building and they may not realize it but they're getting paid for it and then it causes a problem so I I do think that they should be in the building

even though I do I understand what you guys are saying and maybe they're they're happy I don't know um and then just to Karen's Point what could we just I mean that Patron comment talked about just doing a virtual day what if we did a virtual Day this year and where does that fall like in the law like could we just call a virtual day so it it we could it could potentially fall under learner validation like we did during you know during the pandemic I I think there's always a trade-off with that right about how much engagement and learning actually takes place it's not perfect it's better than not engaging but I think for the most part I think it'd probably be you know more of a wash than it would be you know

compared to being in person but I I also recognize and we talked a little bit about this today in cabinet you know when you look at the teacher satisfaction survey you also look at one thing that we haven't brought up is the number of teachers that have left the district and are signaling that they plan to not return those numbers are higher than they've been which is a concern and then the you know as Leon mentioned just the feedback that I've received in the superintendent tour I've been to four middle schools and I think 12 Elementary and you know without fail time and burnout has been right there at the top so you know I think you could go you could go either way with that okay any other discussion or Mr Miller I think

that if there's anything that we learned through the pandemic is that there is no substitute for face to face education if you look at where Canyon school district will stacked up against the other districts in the state if you look at where Utah stacked up against the other state in the nation the school the district that pushed to have the kid back in the classroom receiving face-to-face education performed far better than School where the students were being taught remotely and if you start talking about you know we've had proposals all the way from every Friday to one Friday a month and you start adding up the number of hours of face-to-face instruction that would be lost I would find that a hard pill to this wallet face-to-face instruction is the superior method can I just

add some context to that too I I think um you know in discussing this with our teachers and recognizing that the different stresses and things that you know that are weighing on them and have occurred I think one of the things that we also have to take into context with that side by side is the our absenteeism rate and you know we were to Mon's point we were one of the first districts to be very aggressive about being back in person uh and and so you know as we as we talked about that I mean there's an argument that maybe you know starting with me that we overshot that right but I think in the end the outcomes that and achievement that our students have shown and demonstrated that's that's been a real return on

investment that you know that that we made I I worry a little where we've just recently started to look at some of our attendance data it's it is trending as I've said before it is trending in the right direction but we still have nearly a third of our students that are chronically absent meaning between you know 10 and 30 percent of the time and so I I I've expressed this concern that the more yes balancing that time is important but trying to get that you know that culture back and re-established and there's more to it than just this right I mean compulsory ad all laws and all these other factors but the reality is we still have a lot of kids that are missing a lot of school and and I think you know you

think about for two years we essentially said to students with any type of cough or fever to stay home and you know that that narrative is still out there it's still I think a lot of parents and students are still fearful of covet and coming to school and so I I worry a little that the more there's that balance right where's The Sweet Spot to recognize the needs that our teachers have no question they're there I've I've heard them use those of you that have been out with me and our staff it's a real thing our teachers are are feeling it and I think we're trying to you know really recognize that balance but at the same time maintain our commitment to in-person instruction that has been not just vital academically but social emotional well-being

for our kids too just keeping that commitment uh has been critical in the success of our outcome so it's it's a tough spot but I think try just recognizing the full context and scope of those issues is important too I want to ask are you there do they adjustments yeah um really kind of echoing some of the things that that have been said especially um as we look at whether the teachers should be in the building or not I just I just want to note that there's a lot of benefit to in-person collaboration uh and being able to have access to your teammates your co-workers and others with that aspect and then for the other day uh it seems like it would be a really good discussion for the calendar committee so I think I'm

going to sum up I'm going to attempt to sum up like Nancy knows you can tell me if I got it wrong so I think everyone agrees that next year we'll have those two days um I did want to clarify one thing the calendar committee thought that I mean I think Leon kind of excited about fall break would move it back one week and by doing that then we could do the Monday um the Monday Following fall break so families would have you know the four days but teachers would be back or five days and teachers would be back on Monday more important that's more important I think as a teacher personally to be able to do my to have the time to do my job than have time off yeah it matches a holiday

or whatever so if I ever have a choice between is it going to hit a holiday you know just before a holiday or just before report card I would take before yeah so that's what because the calendar committee did listen to the board and how we kind of were talking about that so we wanted to address that but then in the spring it was just too far off to match it up with so we felt like that was a compromise and also it was good because there's a Monday off and then a Friday off right so um that way you know there's no collaboration possibly maybe the board wants to say there's no collaboration on that Friday anyway so teachers just have the full day um yes Mr milward I want to go back and

revisit this in the building issue again into the board I don't I'm feeling like we're not unified in that area but I think that if you put those days to where the students have that extra day for the long holiday weekend um and you then tell the teacher they can't be gone for that extra day I feel like that is a flap in the face to the teacher because you know what many of our teachers have family with their own many of our teachers would really enjoy having the opportunity to have that extra day on an elongated weekend with their family and I feel like we need to treat the teacher like they are educated professional that they know what they have to do they will get the job done they've proven that to us

in the past and that we should give them some flexibility so so just I mean just so you know on the calendar committee there are teachers and there are administrators there's there's a whole range of different people and but that's why I said it was a compromise because the one day aligned the other one didn't right so it kind of kind of did both um I saw that that aligned with fall break and just a thought as a compromise is what if that first day in fall break they're not required to be in the building but the one that we give in the spring because that way the longer fall break they can take advantage of with their families if they choose to if they want to be in the building because they want access

to their classroom they can they just choose and then in the spring it doesn't it doesn't align with any holiday so then just everyone could be required to be there I kind of think that that helps Both Worlds a little bit and it's a good compromise yeah that's a good compromise Mr Wilco I'd also want to note that you know this impacts all resp employees so so you know for our custodial maintenance we would have them in have to come into work because they'd have to clean it and do the maintenance our kitchen staff would usually like to have them come in because they'd have to clean as well they're you know the kitchens our bus drivers we usually do trainings we usually like to do those in person we do have some some online

modules we could look at but it goes across all levels of employees that you know and you know are are like a paraprofessionals who usually like to have them somewhat in the building doing some type of training you know our school safety Advocates or of course our front office or doing the regular work too so it does go across all all levels of employees there so just something to consider okay thank you um Mrs Oaks can I call the question I think I think can we call the question I'm actually ready to make a motion for for this piece and then a separate motion for the rest of the year is that it are we okay with that sure okay so I would like to prove make a motion to approve the proposal to convert

two instructional days to professional development days for the 2023-2024 school year okay sorry guys okay we have a motion in the second is there any discussion to that motion and um Mrs nybar and then this is team yes do we want to delineate that the the first one in the fall they aren't required to be in the building and the second one because the way that it's presented right now is that they're in the building for both it didn't so I feel like we may need Claire do we need clarification are we going to discuss this later foreign I wonder if that's just something that we give direction to the superintendent okay Mrs tingey um I I was just going to ask um with with the motion were you um intending the days to be

as presented by the administration for this year for next year yes okay and then and I'll make note that um that the all one for fall of 23 is not one that aligns with fall break for next year it does both states do not align with any breaks um the other thing is part of the motion needs to talk about calendar committee will need to change the guidelines to align with whatever the board votes so could you I can amend the motion to include that to the calendar committee will meet to align but the guidelines that the court has set forth and I'll re-second that motion okay we have a motion and a second right now um Mrs Dooney um I have more discussion to the motion um I I realize that the motion doesn't

um give you know Specific Instructions of whether employees are expected to be in the building on those days or not but I'm I'm I personally think that should be part of the direction because I feel like if we leave it up to I feel like that's something that we shouldn't just leave up to the administration that we should give some board guidance especially if we're developing um if we're developing guidelines for future years or years in the future I feel like we probably ought to be a little more definitive on that I can make another amendment but I guess I need to get I need to get more of a sense of where my fellow board members are with regard to in the building not in the building I agree with Miss neighbor I think

that's probably a good compromise um especially in light of the dates so I don't know does anyone I know where Mr millerberg stands I think I I feel like uh your attempt to split the motion was very very well done that I think we should first of all vote on the two-day and everything else that goes along with it except for in or out of the building and then take the in or out of the buildings of separate motions on um okay that makes sense okay any more discussion to that okay this is through the motion to be restated sure yeah okay so I would like to make a motion to approve the proposed the proposal to convert two instructional days to professional development days for the 2023-2024 school calendar with additional well I think

I'm just going to leave it at that yeah if the dates is presented in the presentation this evening okay can I that's great so we have that lotion it's seconded I do want to say some just one thing because this might help clarify later I think we should ask the calendar committee two things to come back with the following two-year calendars press approved separately right because if we're going to align that we've got to like see that right so why don't we have them bring that back um for next meeting and then also if you want them a couple of people have mentioned if you want them to look at adding a date this year like one day though yeah I'm going to do that as a separate motion Administration but no that doesn't need

to be part of the motion I just want to say that's what I think we should do but we can see if that's what everyone agrees with yeah okay so any more discussion to the motion okay I will call for a vote on the motion all in favor say aye hi hi okay I think that was unanimous so I don't need to ask if there are any of those okay so right now we have approved Webster um this presentation for next year and ask the calendar committee to bring us guidelines so then do we want is there another Motion in to clarify in person or not I would like to make a motion to to clarify that one of the professional development dates would be not required to be in the building and as they

see fit and that the other one would be to be in the building okay is there a second to that I'll second it okay so we have a motion in the second um now is there discussion to that motion Mrs he thank you um I you know I appreciate the the intent of finding compromise I'm just not quite sure if that's really going to accomplish that or if it just will add confusion and not really provide I mean if the whole point is to provide teachers time to do work in the building I think we need to stick with that so that's just my thoughts on that motion okay thank you Miss is I my feeling is the intent is to provide teachers for extra time to do as they see fit whether it's you

know looking individually at students and where they're at and what they need to do with supplemental or you know grading or lesson planning um and I for sure see the great benefits of in-person collaboration but especially when Mrs T Mrs schill is talking about how the calendar aligns with fall break I and to mont's point I don't want our teachers to feel that we're not supporting them with their families and I talk to teachers all the time and a lot of our teachers have young families and so I would like to do our part as a district to also support them because you know they can do things remotely just like we all can and still not maybe change you know they may be able to it might be better for their family with their

family plans of travel or things they could still be doing some work online so that's my thought okay any any other discussion so I have a comment oh Andrew do you want to say something go ahead yeah I just want to uh re-emphasize the importance of uh the in-person collaboration that happens and also point out that um this is less of a day off and intended to be a professional development day not just for the teachers um but for all the staff and while I think we all know that our teachers are are dedicated and know what they need to do um I think we may have just uh maybe lost sight of what this is intended for um which is a professional development team okay thank you thank you um I would just like

to add my two cents that I I think they should be in the building I do I think that's the purpose of this and I think that I mean that could be a little professional development time and there also could be time for them to do prep time um I just think it's going to muddy the waters I really do I mean if you want I do have an idea I could take it back to the calendar committee and have them give us feedback before we make this decision but it's I mean it is our decision so I don't I don't need to do that um Mrs Pederson just a quick comment being in the building is more than just getting your work done that is one of the few times you literally can walk

around the building and say hi to someone else you know you need a break away from your desk that is when we actually build um relationships with others in the building if you're not there talk about all the businesses that have remote workers they're panicked because there's not that connection and teachers need not only time but they need connection and support amongst one one another so I feel I still feel that we need to be in the building because there's so many variables and it meets more of the needs to be there than not to be okay any other discussion Mrs tingey oh the Mr milward well I was going to offer up a substitute motion okay um what Vermont top first and then we'll go back to you in this video all I was

going to say is uh Mrs tingey was opposed to that for exactly 180 degrees off of why I'm opposed to it that uh I still feel like the teacher should be treated as adult the professional and people that will get their work done and so I don't you know I appreciate the spirit of compromise to have one on and one off but uh I would be opposed to the to the motion simply because I feel I could scroll the other way foreign I would like to offer a substitute motion that that the board give direction to the administration and to the policy committee as they review and look at the guidelines that these two additional days that we're taking instructional days and we're turning them into professional development and preparation days for all employees of

the district that they've been required as part of those days that may be required to be in the building during contract hours okay I will second that motion okay can can I yeah yeah oh yeah speak to the motion a little bit more question to the second motion I would just like to have that repeated you talk faster than my brain moved go ahead miss this team um yeah I mean I I totally understand and I I don't see this as disrespecting professionalism of teachers I see this as respecting professionalism of teachers and all employees in the district and and the by the com an instructional time is very valuable time and so I I feel like for the parents of students out there and um those that they need to have an assurance that

and again I don't see it as disrespecting teachers I see it as a way of promoting even more professionalism and and I also feel like that I think uh Karen mentioned it earlier that an individual situation we can give some latitude to the building administrators or what you know personal and individual situations arise okay any other discussion uh no no there's a first and the second there was a nomination in a second so yeah we take we take action on Nancy's substitute motion first okay is there any other discussion to that motion I don't know that was good discussion but I don't know that you restated the motion for me I want to know what the motion is okay restate the motion okay the motion is that um that the board give direction to the

administration and to the um policy committee that we'll be reviewing well the policy committee will be reviewing and bringing back to the board the guidelines that the calendar committee uses so so the motion is that the board give direction to the administration and to the policy committee that when incorporate or when transitioning those instructional former instructional days to professional development days that it includes the expectation that all employees will be in the building or at their jobs those days um Mrs neiban just add discussion one thing I did think of that Mrs chill talked about and I believe superintendent Robbins has as well that in the past when we did the professional days and they weren't required to be in the building the new teachers coming on were saying where are paid professional days where

we have time in our classroom without children and didn't realize that we actually have that but that was something that was negotiated by the the cea right is that correct and so that is something that is coming to my mind and Mrs show alluded to that so perhaps when Nancy's talking about also promoting professionalism that also maybe just helps with our communication that we are trying to support teachers and give them ample time in the classroom for Preparation and it doesn't get confused later on down the road that they don't have those paid hours right is that part of it too just thinking about that okay thank you any other comments or discussion okay I not seen any more comments or discussion I will call for a vote so we are voting on Nancy's motion

right now so all in favor say aye aye any opposed say Me Nay Nay okay so the vote is six one and with Mr millerberg descenting Okay so now do we go to the other book I want to withdraw my first motion I was convinced okay thank you okay is there any other instructions so okay so I'm going to recap so we voted for those two days are we okay if we ask the calendar committee to look at a day this year or superintendent would you Administration rather look at come back with a day this year I I mean not days once we realized on the calendar what it is it's pretty much we know I'm sure we can figure it out right like right now yeah we could we could have it figured out

which I think it goes back to Mrs chingy's Point yeah the 90 days yeah so today is you know 90 days out is basically April 17th you'd have to make sure that was covered related yeah because they looked it up I think it's March 17th is the end of the third quarter for high school March March Yeah March right right yeah okay but you'd have to make sure related to coven which lots of things continue to relate to coven do we do we want to entertain that idea or not bored uh Mrs and I borrow the Mrs Oaks I do especially hearing from the superintendent with his listening tours I do feel that there is burnout and I do think that if we can breathe some new oxygen down the ranks and and teachers still

heard and listened I think that sometimes a little bit can go a long way so I am in favor of that okay this is Oaks sorry I feel similarly I I feel like it would it would go a long ways for teachers to know that we are responding to their cries for help and that we're responding quickly as best we can I don't know I I don't know what kind of complications we'll run into at the State School Board I'm not as familiar with how that piece functions I do think legitimately a lot of the burnout that we're seeing at the teachers is a function of the covid Fallout quite honestly I mean yes we had more in-person days than you know any other district and we got right on that but a lot of

it was their burden that They Carried and now that they're filling the after effects and if we can Shore them up I'd like to okay thank you um this is Timmy um so I have a thought I mean this is a new idea that was just brought up and and really wasn't on the agenda yeah um so I I would suggest that maybe we asked the administration to look into it and see what what would be reasonable and that what conforms with the with the code the statute and and perhaps you know a virtual day I believe we have a little more latitude with that one a virtual day might be better now and um anyway I I that would be my recommendation okay board are we good with that um Mr millenberg I think

it's great to have the administration consider that and look at what would work and find out all that that's good but just understand that if we've got a 90-day window yeah that 90-day window won't start ticking until we make a decision okay which also limits the days that they can get it done because right now you're into April 7 or yeah April 17th roughly yeah we meet again in two weeks that'll put the end of April which then you're into the last month of school well can I just clarify yeah oh sorry the 90 days is night is that's the normal um statute of 90 days before the beginning of the school year so really if we're falling under that one we're already that one doesn't apply to the current situation yeah it's the 14

days it's the it's if we're claiming it's a circumstance due to the kova 19 pandemic and or consider a virtual date so they could still get in the spring break okay so I think the board wants the administration to come back with a day that we could use this year school year still and and I think it could possibly be a virtual day if if you guys think that is better that's one of the options so so just so you know February 28th is the end of the Elementary's trimester into the trimesters February 28th the quarter semester I mean the quarter for the high schools if you will or secondary schools would be March 17th thank you first make sure their line next year they're aligned but next year won't be a problem next year

that's why we're gonna have you guys you smart guys figure this out so if you want we we're not ready to make that but we could have a motion so we have the two ways we'll have to tie it to you know a culvert issue but we could have a day for you uh the next board meeting that would be the 14 days okay I think that's what the board wants and then then board also do you want calendar committee to adjust the two next calendars out not next school year but the next two and then bring that back okay for us to look at okay I think that was that was good okay so we're gonna unless Mr Wilcox do you have anything else otherwise we will move on okay do you have an

idea we have an idea we want to just run by we're looking on these phones so we're and the internet's not great here so uh so we're looking at uh the week of parent-teacher conference is that it would be on so March 3rd is the compensatory day it's the parent-teacher conference compensatory days that Friday yeah and we would look it up Monday March 6th it's earlier than what the it's after than what elementary is but it's before what secretary is okay so it might just be that might tie-in for us that would also be a place for parents that would provide a four day or an area you guys could even talk about that now I think it's not on the agenda so we really can't take action but I think that sounds like a

good idea okay thank you thank you Mr Wilcox for that presentation and thank you board we we actually made a motion and approved that so that's right I wasn't I always think you would have to have you know three readings so okay so the next item on the agenda is um board standing committees and um so there are several committees the board uses to do our work and some are required by state law others we have just created as a board so so my first question I kind of want to separate the strategic planning committees from all the other committees because we just barely kind of started working on those so so are you guys all okay with staying on those committees the strategic planning committees and then we'll just fill Karen and Andrew in

so the open slots is that all right so the rest of you guys you want to stay on your committees your own right now Mr Miller and Andrew have a preference yes or if they have heartburn with the committee they would then be assigned to yeah well I was going to ask each of them to tell me so Steve was on two committees and Clarion just on one so I was just gonna ask oh the opposite way oh Clarion was on too sorry about that and Steve was on one so I was just going to ask Andrew and Karen which Committees of the strategic planning committees you guys would like to be on um Steve and clarine were both on human-centered supports so really you're the only one on that committee so I'm more than

happy to step into that position um let's see where else were they um Irene was on access and opportunity to access an opportunity yes and I'm I'm okay with picking that one up okay so Karen Andrew doesn't have a preference okay so Karen's fine filling both of chlorine spots um Andrew which are you okay being on human-centered supports or do you want to be on another one yeah so human-centered supports was actually the one I was uh most interested in serving on so that works out well perfect and are you fine just being on one I am I'm always happy to to serve with with other things but I am just happy with that that's the thing okay okay great okay so so that is strategic planning committees now the way I thought we would

do this for the rest of the Committees is um I just want to go down the line and each of you tell me your top three committees okay I know Mom wants to be on album he's overachiever um and let's just try and it is like a board president assignment so I just thought why don't you guys each tell me your top three or four I guess if you have four you really want but try to at least tell me you're number one what's most important and I'll try to make sure you're on that one um but just that way we can just kind of split split them up um and I will try to take notes and then I'll send out an email and then if you guys aren't happy we can talk about

this more so um I think I will start with Holly we'll start at this end and just go down the line if that is okay okay um I really I've been on the long range planning and the policy committee and the third one and I I really would love to continue on both the long-range planning and the policy and I've been on the equity committee which I love as well but if other people love that I'm happy to pick up a different third of whatever fits best so for you okay great thank you um Mrs Pederson no I don't know I'm not sure we have the equity committee still because I think it's kind of in the strategic planning right right we folded it into yeah so um can I just make a note that

for board members the committee's list that was emailed out to us by Cindy last Friday is the most updated one um I believe the one we have in front of us is an outdated the old one yeah so and we did kind of fold it I think access and opportunity is kind of taking place of the equity yes okay and then after Mrs Peterson goes is it okay if Mr edel goes online would that be okay with the rest of you guys because since our new board members I kind of want to let them how much Jane wants to choose first I don't yeah no you no you go ahead okay um Steve was on policy and I wouldn't mind taking that position unless Andrew would cover it I don't have strong preferences um incident

command it's only month now there's only clarine and chlorine and Steve were both on incident command do you want us you want it all but just so you guys know you don't have to only fill in spots I'm just saying like don't don't feel like you can only feel inside there because sometimes it's good for us to mix mix around and be on different committees [Music] um and I bumped someone from long range signing then well I'll organize to see about that so I'll have to see about that I express interest in long-range planning I said I'd be willing to do policy and I just think policy and commit and calendar are kind of big Thunder is not that big not that big no we just meet in the end of school well I don't

know lately it's been kind of big possibility of calendar okay possibly finally okay then um Andrew do you want to go ahead yeah so my number one is policy my number two is incident command uh and then I don't have a strong preference uh beyond that and I'd be happy to fill in uh wherever you need me okay thank you okay Mrs tingy um thank you my first choice is policy and um also in my top three I would like to um be on long range planning and the Arts Consortium to continue serving there okay thank you this is so I'd like to continue as the um on the point development Advisory Group and along with that I I would like to serve on long-range planning I know that's like really popular tonight but there

are so many moving pieces with what's happening at the point that I feel like keeping in close touch with the discussions being held on long range is going to be really important anyway beyond that um I'm happy to serve on health curriculum or um Arts Consortium still so okay thank you and then Mr millerberg I'm sure this comes with no surprise to anybody but my number one pick would be the Education Foundation I feel like I've been there since uh even before the Education Foundation and I feel like I had a part in bringing that into an existence and I just really loved doing that one uh we took care of my other first I have a bunch of first there's usba we took care of that one of the convention so I think I'm

there um audit committee I feel like I should be on the audit committee because I think I have an accounting background which is very uh important to have on that committee uh long-range planning I feel like that give me a part of where I'm actually involved in some of the directions to where the district's going and I'd like that's my next verse RDA CDA uh I'm not terribly passionate about that one but once again a lot of that comes into accounting issues and so I feel like I should be there incident command is right up there with the foundation to me that I love being on that one uh and Equity I feel like the demographics of the area where I uh where I was elected it's important that I'd be there and the one

that I've got checked here that I didn't mention the Salt Lake County Park and Recreation and I'm okay staying there because I've got some very greedy personal reasons for wanting to be there wow those are all my first okay this is going to be super easy since no one wants policy or long-range planning so I'm joking um yeah I don't know we may have to draw straws or something we'll see um or I may call you guys also and kind of talk to you I've learned figuring that out um okay so thank you for that um I think that is great I feel like my little gender here I will look them over I will yeah and I will decide and then I will email everyone else but I may call you guys I mean

it's gonna be hard since and oh I should say what I want just so you guys know I well I'm on the audit committee already and also the RDA CDA and I'm fine to stay on those that no one mentioned those so I'm fine with that I know that um I am on long range planning which I really like and I was also kind of interested in policy myself so okay so we all like I said we all want pretty much all about those two but we'll I'll figure that out so um but yeah I will work on that and probably get back to you guys next week on the Committees okay okay thank you Karen that is very nice um oh okay if anyone else has a change of heart let me know so

um okay so now we are on to staff comments so first of all superintendent's report and then um business administrator report thank you president Michelle make it short just wanted to express my appreciation publicly to Dr dowdle I know we mentioned him in recognition tonight and I just want to express to him on the record how much I appreciate all he's done for the district and over the years and everything that he's contributed to the success of canyons but most of all just want to thank him for kind of riding side by side with me the last couple of years and really being a mentor and welcoming me into the Canyon's family and all that he's he's done to further the mission and the impact he's had on students and then also just thank the

board for your work tonight as I've said before you know this is really a sign and a marker of true American democracy is transfer of power and being able to reorganize and to refocus our energy and and targets and to move forward so I just appreciate your efforts as elected officials and really keeping that moving forward and doing the job that you've been elected to do so thank you [Music] yeah thank you presidential just one thing I just want to I'll call what uh Rick said about Bob you know I was thinking back basically 14 years ago gave or take a week now I came and interviewed at the old Cottonwood Heights Elementary building and it was Steve and Bob and the current uh business administrator at that time so he interviewed me well I

didn't say a whole lot so I walked out thinking well I think that interview but I I appreciate uh the confidence that he had in me at that point in time to to recommend me being the county director at that time so I appreciate that and it's a honor to call Bob you know I can honestly say he's one of my best friends and I really appreciate everything that he's done for the last 14 years it's been a just it's been a ride but I'm glad you were along with it so thank you for your leadership and everything that you've done for Canyon school districts you will be missed and not easily replaced so thank you uh and then just we had a you know I really appreciate the parents who came to spoke about

these month uh you know just to emphasize the plan that we submitted has had to be approved by the department of air quality we can go in and do as much testing as we want on everything we've done quite a bit we just did some more testing on the top floor to make sure everything was came back clear those results came Ryan said goes back to me just tonight during the meeting and said that they overall came back and undetected uh we we you know everything that we're testing right now is coming back non-detected uh should be said we don't know why those initial results came back non-detected in November and then we had the issue with the contract I thought there might be Asbestos and then we pull samples when they came back detected

you know we haven't been able to figure that out what what happened there but we can't do as much testing as we want we're going to do as much clean you know on the bottom floor where the main stuff is we're going to do we're required to do substantial testing there and so we have to test all the car pitch you know the auditorium chairs everything uh pull samples on that before it can be cleared and then if it's not they may have to go back clean it again so that that's the issue on the the bottom floor the tops the two floors again we've done quite a bit of testing just haven't had anything come back positive you know it's all been non-detected but we can't do as much as the community wants on

that to make sure of that that issue you know that's a big issue for parents out there with that so I just want to make sure we're understanding we'll do whatever it takes to get back in we'd like to get back in that building I think as quickly as possible but if it needs to be a little bit longer to make sure we can do that too so we're just grateful we have the Crescent View building so our kids can need to be down there building has paid off so many times yeah so with that that's all I have thank you word comments and I believe that I started last time so I'm going to start down with Mr millerberg and oh he already went um how about Mr millerberg and then I'll ask I'll

ask Andrew since we have his empty chair there first thing I want to make mention of is um through the holidays the uh gong Family Foundation uh painted a mural at Jordan Valley School and it kind of sound that's not really true what I just said they organized the painting of the mural and they were members of the school district members of the community every year they have a homecoming dance and one of the LDS states in the area come down and that supports that that group was invited to come down and paint and I spent about an hour there with a paintbrush in my hand and this was truly paint by numbers they had projected the image they wanted they'd outlined it in Black and they handed you the right color paint and told

you what area that was outlined and it was so much fun and the gone desire he has and that the board has that we want to listen and it is part of our strategic plan we have in their communication feedback groups and and it's it's a great way to connect and I'm happy that I've been able to sit in on it and it gives me an indication of what some of the um staff are thinking and feeling in the area in the schools of the area that I represent so I appreciate that and then I know I mentioned this in study session but I want to mention it again with the start of the legislative session how grateful we are to have Charlie and Susan and and we had the legislative lunch where we could

meet and visit and share our priorities with the with the legislators that represent our area and and I'm grateful for them and for the um how respectful they are of what our role is also as elected officials and grateful for that and then finally I just I want to thank everyone for the kind words and and I I've had to put a few thoughts together so I I'm just gonna read this um serving as president of the board has been an incredible experience incredibly challenging and Incredibly rewarding it has been a privilege to work with Amber Shields Steve Wrigley and Amanda Oaks and I thank them for their incredible leadership and support as vice presidents the past four years I will also want to express my appreciation and admiration for our incredible superintendent Dr Robbins

incredible business administrator Leon Wilcox and the our incredible board secretary Cindy Claussen I won't take time to list them all yet I do want to say that I am so grateful for the incredibly talented and dedicated District directors and administrators who have worked with the board in addressing the needs challenges and opportunities for improvement in the district I'm confident that the leadership we have selected tonight will facilitate the work of the board so that Canyon's district will continue to shine as a lighthouse District in our state and in our nation thank you thank you Mrs TV Mrs Pederson it's an honor to be with such smart people um I've jumped in with both feet and they have everyone in the district and every every everyone I've met has been so supportive of this new Journey

that I am traveling and I hope that I can be an asset to the team um I was able to attend right away I got an opportunity to go to the usba conference and I was impressed with the presentations that were given there and the opportunities that we had to discuss things with other other districts and to see their points of view as well um I felt very motivated to do good things for our um or our district I also participated in the legislative luncheon and that's the first time I've sat down with that many legislators all at once and they were very cordial and actually were listening I kind of thought maybe they would be a bit close-minded but no they were they were open to what we were saying and we had some

good discussion and I do agree with their idea that they should that we should meet with them sooner so that we can inform their their decision making and I'm looking forward to that um I was able to attend a student advisory council meeting and being with those teenagers was so exciting it was so much fun they have an energy that you just can't help but absorb on your own and we talked about safety and school belonging and they love their schools and they are happy overall with what's going on in our schools but there's a few things that they have suggestions for that we take seriously and that we're going to be looking looking towards implementing I took the opportunity to go to the canyoneering canyoneering night that we had the other night here at

the district and they talked about digital safety suicide vaping and sexortation an eye-opener more parents need to come to these they're not intimidating you won't feel embarrassed that you will be amazed at the level of information that has been put together for us there is one more coming up in another month or so so I hope that if our parents haven't had a chance to go to that they they choose to and quick drink there we go the last part is I've spent quite a bit of time down at Eastmont my grandchildren attend there and of course that's one of my schools and I have permission to share a little bit of an email that was sent to me and the superintendent I'm the board of directors from the principal Stacy kurtzels and she gave

me permission to share I'd like to share one of the parts of her email while providing virtual learning for our students our staff showed up not one of them but all of them to do what was necessary to make our students have the best experience they could have they move furniture vacuumed scrubbed found materials held a tutoring Labs supported one another decorated brought supplies nested Keys counted Furniture delivered supplies I could go on and on what I saw this week was that Eastmont is more than a building it's a culture it is a team and we are all in it together we have two themes at Eastmont Patriot Pride it's inside and we are brilliant and resilient and we definitely proved that this week what I can say is that I've seen this in not

just Eastmont but I've seen it in many of our schools in the district that we have some of the best employees in the state and that we can do it together and that we should and could and will continue to try and support one another and become the best that we can be for our students I know that we are all in it together and I hope that I can help with that process and I appreciate this opportunity thank you thank you Mrs neibar I'd like to start off with addressing that parent that came and communicated about Edgemont a lot of I really appreciated her coming and a lot of the questions she had in Her speech were addressed in your presentation Leon about the testing that has happened and you you um spoke to

that and I know we we always do a great job with our communication channels but here's a question for Jeff with the communication with Edgemont Eastmont I'm sorry I keep saying that with Eastmont are we doing are we doing skylerts and all of those things okay okay because I was thinking but they have been doing testing and they have tested you know and in your presentation we had all that so I just wanted to make sure that they're getting all those Communications and I wanted to give my thanks to Dr Bob Doddle um sad to hear that he's retiring but happy for him and his new Venture and grateful that he's staying on through the end of the school earlier I participated in the high quality learning meeting the other day and he's so well

prepared and he's just brought a lot to our district and and been a staple here so he will be well missed and I I love that group that whole group that sits on that high quality learning I'm staring at some of you right now but anyway I just love it and I think that there's really neat things that are coming out of there and I can't wait for it to come back to the board uh I I wanted to express again my thanks to Nancy uh Nancy is is very humble but she is like her mind is like an encyclopedia uh lots of depth of knowledge there with all of legislation probably even before she was on the board when she was an SEC member at Brighton I think she has all of that legislation

also committed to memory but just really appreciate you for your leadership um I also wanted to thank our superintendent um every every once in a while we have matters that that are pressing that are after hours and Dr Robbins is so dedicated and you know I I had a circumstance and didn't want to reach out and he reached out to me so I appreciate his dedication and that his heart is all in um I really appreciated the usba conference I wanted to share this with all the board who hasn't heard it I had a board member after we presented that came up to me from Cedar City with tears in her eyes and said she was so inspired by our description of the process and what happened as we came together with this strategic plan

and she said looking at your board I thought boy all of these people are so different they're like night and day I can see it their personalities are so different yet they've set aside their differences and come together and be unified in one purpose and she said I'm just inspired I want to do this in my school district and and I just really appreciated the amount of unity that was there and I thought that was such awesome feedback and um and I loved being a part of that and thank Jeff and Kirsten and Dr Robbins for their preparation for that um the pre-legislative lunch it was so surprising that actually the budget book was open to like page 200 and something with the senator asking I I really appreciated I appreciated that they you know

I mean I've only been to three of those two of those and that's the first time I've seen a book open and and Charlie Evans said that's the first time he ever has and I think he's been here longer than I have so that was exciting and really great discussion um I just wanted to briefly mention Martin Luther King Junior Day um I know we have a day off of school and uh that I Have a Dream speech in his life and his his goals to have peaceful discourse with equality I lived in Cleveland Ohio for four years and worked with an inner city youth group and came in contact with the Miss Robbie Penman who was 106 years old and she used to have Martin Luther King Jr over for dinner and she would

send her boys out to go with him to pass out pamphlets to the doors and to talk to people and I also became good friends with a neighbor her name was Cindy and she went to Shaw High and she was there with the riots and just and had gotten a phone call that there were going to be riots that day and stayed home and and here we are so many years later and the the feelings and thoughts and the experiences of these youth that I worked with for those four years are etched on my heart and I know we've had discussion and I'm so grateful for what we do for constitution Constitution Day but I would love at our following board meeting following Martin Luther King Jr day that we get a little summary of

what's going on in the classrooms to teach our kids about respecting differences loving differences and always having peaceful discourse with others that are different than us and just wanted to to honor Martin Luther King Jr and for all he stood for and that's all thank you Amber uh yes before you do your part right here's another minute yes sure go ahead no go ahead I failed to mention we received our certificate for the board for the uh there's a master's School Board award who's hereby presented the canyon Board of Education that means that we had at least seven out of nine of us sitting up here uh do the requirements to become an Master board certified this is applied for the district and this is my preference and I don't know if they want a

motion in the second and all that stuff but I would love to see that get framed and posted someplace in the office here where people coming and going would see that our board has gone the extra mile to receive that certification and I also have certificates for the rest of the board for their uh individual purposes okay thank you I appreciate that um yeah there's a plaque that's on the wall right outside the boardroom where um it it lists the the award and then we can just add the year add a year on to it yeah it's just where we never see it that's why we never see it but at that Mom ENT thank you thank you for reminding us about that though Mr Miller okay so thank you miss my bar um I

just want to also um thank I want to thank Amanda and Steve Steve's not here but and also Nancy for their service it really does take more time and I really do appreciate um them being board leadership for the last two years um I want to also add my thanks to Dr dowdle I I have a memory but I will never forget and that is probably 13 years ago I don't know if he he may not remember but I remember um it's when you guys were in the Cottonwood Heights Elementary and you guys went to lunch you and Dr Dodie at Lone Star and I ran into both of you there do you remember that I don't know that you do remember okay um anyway so so that was before the district even started I

mean that just goes to show that Bob has been just a key part of our district from the beginning and I do I always remember thinking whenever I saw Dr Dodie Bob was with him and then it's been just going on with all the other superintendents too so um I just think we wouldn't be where we are today without his leadership and really appreciate him and I'm excited for him though to get a break he's been an educator for many I don't even know how many years I won't say but a lot of years so but thank you we we really appreciate you um so I'm not going to repeat what a lot of other people have said but I I do have something that no one has said that I'm going to bring up

um so I I attended in the fall it was Unified sports at Rio and so there were you know some other board members there the superintendent was there um also Linda Hall the special special education administrator was there and she is excited and has formed a committee for Unified sports and just getting at all of our high schools to start and then wanting to include our middle schools eventually but um and I was part of that committee and it was great they invited me probably because I went to that soccer tournament um so but I am wondering if the access and opportunity committee I mean you guys should probably it should probably be under that strategic committee right so I'm just wondering so I don't know I'm not on that committee so maybe another board

member from that committee wants to be on I don't know but I just wanted to make sure you guys know about it and probably you guys should talk about it because I feel like that's under your own privy so just wanted to bring that up [Music] um and I think I think that's all and I just want to say thank you again for I'm excited for this opportunity to be president of the board um I know it'll be a learning experience but also I'm excited for the challenge and I'm excited to work with all the board members so thank you I appreciate that and also I'm excited for Lance and Amanda to work with me so thank you um and I now I think I can just declare the meeting over is that what I

do okay the meeting is adjourned thank you I do have a gavel I may bring it
