a safety and security audit of all canyons district facilities yesterday was the day that the questionnaires were due from principals and custodians on the safety and the security needs at their respective schools the district's emergency management team has been hard at work on examining our procedures and our facilities now all done in an effort to complete this audit before the start of the school year now this was done obviously at the request of the board of education and superintendent robbins and it was done uh in the weeks following the tragic shooting in uvalde texas we want to make sure that when we head back to school for this fall we have plans in place to make sure our students and our teachers and our education support professionals are in buildings that are safe welcoming and

prepared safety has always been chief among the concerns of the canyon school district and we're dedicated to making those as safe as possible for our students when they return for the fall we'll have more information for the board in the coming weeks in the next couple weeks we'll be reevaluating our incident command manual updating the segments that needed updating and we'll be reviewing those audits and those questionnaires that we have received from our principals so thank you president tiny for the time that you allow us and we turn the time back to you jeff i want you to know the sign bears out i did take my family on vacation to purgatory okay it looks hot enough to be in purgatory thank you so much we we enjoy hearing all those wonderful things that are

happening in the district um i neglected to excuse mrs arnold from our meeting tonight so um enter that into the record thank you okay we have now come to the patron comment portion of our meeting while not required by law the board often designates time in meetings to listen to the patrons of the district please be aware that patron comment time is limited to residents and taxpayers of canyon's district students and parents of students and current employees of the district patrons may provide board members with written documents these doc documents must be submitted to the board secretary at the meeting over here or email to the office of public communications by noon of the day following the board meeting we have one patron that has signed up to address us this evening and they will

be given three minutes it's the board's practice to listen and take notes during patron comments the board of education does not discuss matters that are not on the meeting's agenda nor engage in public comment on individual students to protect their privacy or employee issues if the patron wants to comment on a district employee's character professional competence or mental or physical help the board requests that those comments be submitted to the board in writing however if the patron determines to verbally comment on those personnel issues the comments need to be civil and refrain from personal attacks insults defamatory or slanderous comments about an individual the board of education would like to make it clear that critical race theory is not part of the curriculum being used by canyon school district there are no plans to incorporate

it into the curriculum or instruction in canyon schools the board of education values input on all sides of issues to maintain decorum and respect we ask that those in attendance refrain from applause or other types of demonstrations during the patron comment time as well as throughout the meeting so as i mentioned we have one patron that has signed up to address the board uh steve van maren thank you madam chair board member steve van maren president of sandy here my comment is on the purchase order for history textbooks it's in the consent agenda i have one question one issue with the request for approval and one question about the digital books the way i read the letter or requesting the approval is each student keeps a copy of the text for six years if this

is if it is a six year license i would ask how many students there are in each eighth and tenth grade each year i suspect the license for each copy is for six years but is actually passed from one class to the next so i think the wording of the request is a little misleading now to the books since these are digital it's very easy for a publisher to change the content of a digital book handy for correcting typos but can also be used to change wording to meet the objective of the school board who has reviewed this digital version for a true equivalence with the most recently purchased textbook there is no indication in the memo that a review has been made thank you for your time thank you okay um that concludes the

patron comments of our meeting and we appreciate the time it was taken to address the board next on is the consent agenda items i will ask for a motion and in making that motion please list the specific items in that consent agenda it's summertime i'd like to make a motion to approve the consent agenda item 6a approval of minutes from june 21st 2022 b approval of higher in termination reports c approval of purchasing bids d approval of student overnight travel e approval of june financial reports and f approval of administrative appointments thank you is there a second to the motion i'm wondering if i well i'd like to make an amendment to discuss that that book so you would like to pull that item from the confirmation consent agenda for further discussion but i would

like to second if he would be willing if mr wrigley would be willing to pull that part out for some discussion i'd be willing to do that so amanda to pull out uh the proud sea approval of i believe that came under purchasing beds yes yes the whole thing or just wanted to see and just the book separate yes okay wait all right let's clarify so just pull out the purchasing bid for the textbooks yep for online i think i think at this point let's res let's just start over and restate the motion so the original motion um let's let's just say it didn't receive a second and now there's been a comment made and let's res let's begin again with a new motion okay i'm going to make a new motion that we approve

this consent agenda a approval of minutes for june 21st 2022 b approval of higher and termination reports c approval purchase of bids minus the book approval or math book online history books d approval of student overnight travel e approval of june financial reports and f approval of administrative appointments i will second that motion okay thank you we have a motion and a second any discussion to this motion seeing then we'll call for a vote all in favor please say aye aye any opposed that that motion passes okay now we have had one item that has been pulled off a consent agenda for further discussion and um make her the motion would you like to talk well no talk about what what discussion what you would like discussed on that matter okay uh at this point

then we want to discuss steven marin for questions and get some answers to those maybe the superintendent might have some issues with them yeah i can have dr roderick okay will you will you state your name so good evening i'm amber rodrick landward i feel like it's been a while team how you doing it's summer you all look a little tired for summer so to address mr van marin's questions uh first the question about the six year license it's actually for a digital version of the text and this is coming before you today because to date the approved textbook for both world history and u.s history our schools have had mixed resources and so they have not all had the same access to the digital and the print version of the approved text over the

years and given a lot of the concerns that you've all been dealing with that we've all been dealing with from our parents and curriculum and access to that our principals and teachers and isd wanted to ensure that all students had access to all of the materials so that when we are mapping the specific resources and the instructional guides teachers had access to the same materials so this makes sure that all eight middle schools have all of the print and digital resources for the next six years so those licenses are what are the six year renewal not the actual textbook does that help of course yes superintendent remember help us understand as well um on the digital version is there notice if there's any changes has there been any changes to the current online curriculum and

if if the vendor does make a decision to do that how does that what does that look like really good question so similar to the other big vendors that we've brought before you like mcgraw-hill when there are updates that constitutes basically a new version that we then have to purchase or upgrade and so they don't happen as frequently in terms of content and a lot of the resources but they do tend to notify us of those often they're more updates around things like typos or um broken access to resources within the digital platform so it's those types of things typically not a complete overhaul because they like to make money so then they notify us of a new addition and whether or not we'd like to purchase an upgrade one follow-up do parents have access

to demo accounts or can they how do parents access that curriculum or that content i'm sure we could get those uh because it's been something that's been previously approved we don't have a demo account that's active right now but it's something that we could certainly make available will you check with them and just make sure we have demo accounts for parents absolutely okay thanks that's a really great question i haven't i have another question oh this is my bar when was the last update on that text i just texted our social studies specialist for middle school and haven't heard that from because i couldn't remember the exact date so i'd have to go back and double check that for you okay and do we know was their content as well or was it grammar and

things like that or was there new content or we don't know yet no it's been approved it's it has been approved for a while so there hasn't been a new addition or a new adoption that's gone through our new policy okay and then you're uh once we look at when the last newest edition was given um the isd department would would they review that yes under the rubric that we outlined right in the policy committee correct and so we can have a follow-up maybe at our next meeting of when that latest edition was and yeah the initial approval i'll get that and then also um will you get the information for us about when the latest update was yes okay and if there was any needed review yes thank you so much thank you mrs

oakes so a couple questions just to clarify for the public so this is not a fresh new curriculum that's a great introduce so when was um like at what date was this one actually run by the public for them to be able to see and give it been a few years so it's been prior to our policy update so this isn't something we're just slipping in under everybody's noses it's something that went through the public enemies okay but not every school has used the digital and the text simultaneously okay so it's it's basically supporting a curriculum that was publicly approved before correct okay and um and so then the second piece was also i know we've talked a lot about dynamic curriculums and i can appreciate the concern especially with a u.s history curriculum in

light of all of the conversation that's been going on the last couple years that people are nervous about dynamic curriculums and particularly something like us history could something could slip in that make people make um could make someone feel uncomfortable potentially just as a reminder a review what is the current policy that we have in place for dynamic curriculum can maybe the policy committee can can speak to that um i i'm i'm going to defer to amber on that because we did just recently redo that policy and it's pretty extensive process it is it doesn't explicitly outline uh some of the dynamic components that you are talking about again because when we're looking at a district-wide approval for a core subject specifically we're looking at the rubric we're also looking at something that is likely

a bigger publisher and going um aligning it to our state standards so those pieces don't change very often our standards change about every eight to ten years and so then again if it's a big enough change in a curriculum that's comprehensive it's going to be considered a new addition and a new cost which would always come before the board so the specifics around dynamic curriculum and updates are not explicit in the policy is that how you all i just want to make sure that i know remember yeah and so i i guess this brings up an important question for us as a board to discuss about whether or not we want a clearer policy with dynamic curriculum i think but that's probably where we really need to go we we do and it's in an

exhibit we do when there is an update on a curriculum it is supposed to go through the vetting process if it is content related and we have an exhibit attached to that policy do you remember we discussed it when we when we wrote when we did a little overhaul of approval for all main curriculum supporting materials all of that there was language in there about when there is a con when there is an update regarding to content not just grammatical errors or you know things that they're updating when it's actually content-based and there's an exhibit i believe because we did discuss it in policy committee your memory is probably better than mine sounds like we should you know it may be something that might be nice to pull up you know in our next meeting

and have it on the you know the overhead with that policy but that we had a lengthy discussion in our policy committee meeting about how to prevent dynamic curriculums from just kind of slipping through without going through our lens of rubric and in fact we changed it it used to be that if a if a curriculum that had a change that was dynamic it didn't always go through isd department and now it does you recall that discussion we had i recall the discussion i don't really know the language and the policy so your memory yes so before when we had the for example in second steps that content change only went to student responsive services because that was their department and that is one thing we talked about at length and now the isd department

any updates on any dynamic curriculum goes through the isd department because they're the ones that are familiar with that rubric and those lenses we're looking at and those lenses have a long list of many things age appropriateness objectivity presenting um you know through different cultures and all of those things were part of that and it now always goes to isd rather than the other departments correct yeah i i yeah i i agree i think it would be good to just take another look at that and make sure that the language is clear agreed in in the policy but but i know that that was the discussion and the intent as is that there is a process for when updates when we're notified about updates there is a process for that does that answer questions any

other questions okay um any so any further discussion to this item just it might be good when it comes back if there were content changes to go ahead and see what your department did with looking at those content changes according to that rubric okay so i just want to make it clear so it's my understanding that the purchasing request was to purchase additional copies of a text that is currently being used and to the best of our knowledge it's not any different content than what is currently in use in these middle school classrooms correct it's just making sure that every school and support has access to the digital version for the next six years so that that's not dependent upon um a school day so it kind of becomes an an access a critical access

and and this isn't different than this what what the request is is to purchase an item that is the same item that's already being used in classrooms correct not a new or updated item correct and the large price item is because it's a six-year licensing six-year contract so a motion would be in order to approve that portion so yes so we we've pulled the one item that has the administration has requested approval so we've had discussion if there's any further discussion to this i have one other thing i just i would be more comfortable approving it after i i know when was the last newest edition update and to be sure that we have followed that process because i think in this discussion that's one thing we do understand it's an existing curriculum and some

schools have already had it online however they do updates and we know they tend to do more updates when it's an online curriculum because it's more dynamic so i would just like to make sure we crossed all the t's before we approve it is my thought okay emotion is in order is there emotion um i will ask a question um timing wise we're trying to get this for the start of the school year correct yes i mean because again um there's already access to a lot of it in schools just not equitable in terms of the licenses yes that would be ideal they do have them in stock at mountain states from what i understand so hopefully we can get those um even if the decision is delayed president yes i would make a motion

that we approve on the consent agenda item c his history textbook that we approve that uh separately now okay um okay and then that we receive report at our next board meeting is follow-up but i'm comfortable with the that at this time okay thank you emotion is in order and i'm sorry a second so that motion and seconded mr wrigley seconded motion has been made and seconded any discussion to the motion so just from what i understand we currently have the textbook and we currently have the online edition we're just extending the license for six years correct and and making sure that all schools have it not every school has been using all schools have the same license but it's been it's been a curriculum that's already been approved by us you're just asking us

to have more books so that it can have more widespread use if i could have the question answered of when was the last update and new edition and we had gone through our policy and followed our policy then i would be fine to approve it but until i i feel that we followed our policy that we've outlined with dynamic curriculums and updates that's why i feel it would be best to wait and not that i plan on not approving it i just like to see that we follow the policy and that we we are aware and cognizant of what those updates are i don't feel comfortable putting my name on as a yes i make the motion to approve this when i don't know exactly what i'm making the motion for because there could be

some content changes and i think history is a great teacher and last year we learned a little bit about that with dynamic curriculums and updates and so for that reason i will be abstaining from voting for this motion because i feel bet more information is best okay further discussion to the motion mrs oaks so but to clarify with mr millerberg's motion what you're saying is you would like to approve item c but pull out this piece i am pulling this piece out for approval it was pulled out originally approved all of six except for that portion right there's other purchasing bids on there tonight and that we receive a report as to the other questions at our next meeting okay i actually have the same reservations that miss neighbor does i i would like to

see that with dynamic curriculums we set a precedence of addressing some of those things though and any other discussion to the motion mrs schill so can i just ask a question and maybe you already answered are you aware of any changes or you just can't remember so we're not sure i would have to double check that with our social studies team i don't want to answer incorrectly okay okay any other discussion to emotion i'm i'm i'm comfortable supporting the motion um for a couple of reasons um i i think having some follow-up information is is good but i also feel like i mean this was approved all we're approving is more of what is already in place and that was approved prior to having our policy in place and so if if when the information

comes back and there was a recent update and it goes then that's when the policy kicks in is when we find that out it's not it's not a retroactive thing at this point in my mind so i i'm comfortable supporting the motion any other discussion uh mrs nypower at this point i just don't feel we know there could have been an update after we approved the changes to the policy so it might not be retroactive it could be that their latest edition was after we've we've gone ahead and approved that policy so i just feel weird we're missing too much information at this point but i agree with president thingy if if those updates were before that but we just don't know so that's where i'm at i'll i'll just say one more thing i

feel like if if if there was an update since our policy went into effect they would be asking to be purchasing licenses and textbooks for every student and not just filling in where there were books and licenses missing right because it would be a new addition and we would have to make a whole new purchase yes and no so it it is filling in but because the schools have purchased those licenses on their own annually this is for every student to make sure that all of the schools have the same access for the next six years so it's it's kind of a both and it's you'll notice the numbers are for every student okay all right any other any other discussion to the motion just one question i guess is the important one is if

we don't approve it tonight and put it to next board's meeting so you could answer some questions is that going to prohibit the license on our kids order to start school without a textbook the next board meeting is august 2nd so we we will make it work any other discussion to the motion the piece that would be delayed because again students don't start for a couple weeks after that is um our team right now is mapping in all of those resources for the scope and sequence to have those ready for teachers and teachers are already calling saying when are you publishing the guides we want to make sure that we have access so it it delays the teacher access at this point more than the student access so we would not maybe have the curriculum

ready to go starting the next semester we'd have it ready just i mean we have fabulous teachers and so they're thinking about their instruction and their class and their instruction right now and looking at how they want to organize their classroom so it's just that piece but i mean they've been doing that quite frankly a lot of them since the last day of school so okay that's who they are um mrs schill so yes we do have a new policy but we already had a very rigorous curriculum policy when we approved this the first time correct yes the our practice was more rigorous than the policy is that fair to say okay thank you any further discussion okay we have a motion and that motion's been seconded um i will call for a vote all

in favor say aye aye any opposed nay okay uh that that motion passes four to two with uh mrs nybauer and mrs oakes as the nays and i think mod also asked to just come back at this next meeting with well that that was part of the motion right yeah that was part of the motion so it's not being totally drunk those in favor of the motion mr millerberg mrs tingey mr wrigley and mrs shiel okay all right yeah so we'll we'll look forward to receiving that additional information so next all right that that concludes our consent agenda items and next is the study item 7a discussion of tier support for the 22 2022-23 school year i will turn time over to dr brian mcgill director of student services great thank you president tinke and

school board for giving me the opportunity to present to you this evening uh usually about this time of the evening my mind and body and the spirit of wellness is getting ready to drive out to the gym to get a couple workout a couple hours of workouts and so anyway um we're excited about this opportunity as we we move forward looking at providing a tier one life skills curriculum across the k-8 span uh dr roderick landward and i will be kind of co-presenting uh so i'm going to be speaking to the whys the essential need and the critical nature of why we need to incorporate these life skills lessons on behalf of our students and teachers and supports for parents but what as far as what's being created and what's expected and then we'll talk

a little bit about the process for the curriculum creation itself and amber will speak a little bit more to the technicalities and details of the creation delivery and the design emphasis piece um we've been really excited because this has been a collaborative effort between four different departments our student services our isd department our federal programs wendy's here tonight and our special education departments with nate evelson so we have specialists with all within all four departments that have been collaborating on this project collectively together we're also excited because as a school board and as part of our leadership here in the district we've identified four main pillars uh which we can leverage and we want to focus on uh as it relates to the life skills curriculum those four pillars are listed up there and tonight

we're going to be speaking to the human-centered supports element and some of the language that's contained within uh first of those initiatives again that we as a district will provide support for the physical social and psychological safety of students and staff and part of that success criteria is looking at the school's ability or program's ability uh for inclusion for connection establishing relationships and social emotional and mental health supports for kids um and speaking on behalf of this is is both an educator in a district as well as a proud father of a son who's going to be a junior at alta high school as i read through this language and as i look at the application of this um we have some coaches and advisors and teachers across our district that are doing an amazing

job with this and i just wanted to to point out uh you know with my son being on the spectrum sometimes he struggles right and making connections at school and feeling included and and establishing relationships with pierce and he recently made the ballroom team at alta and he also uh made the madrigals singing choir group as a junior for next year the reason why i bring this up is because as i look at the advisors for both of those programs they enact and embody a lot of the success criteria and they've built their programs established around that and so i'm very thankful that we've got staff across our district that look at this and adhere to it so a second component to the human-centered supports is that we'll implement a tiered system of support for

social emotional mental well-being of students and again some powerful language here uh fostering integrity responsibility hard work resilience lifelong learning personal growth service and respect and as part of this a couple of things came to mind first of all just how powerful each of our classrooms would be in each of our programs looking at extracurriculars if our teachers coaches and advisors uh created this as part of their framework and platform of delivery with all kids when i was a head tennis coach some years ago going back 20 plus years ago as i look at the language that's enacted within the human centered supports realm this is what i fostered as part of my program in coaching boys and girls at the high school level so it's kind of fun to see the language here again

crosswalking that back 20 plus years in terms of what i established my program around um i think the other part of this is knowing the critical piece that parents play in this process as well of helping their students uh through this being a father i can definitely relate to that and then i also just wanted to give credit we before i left alta one of my last coaching hires was a gentleman by the name of travis warren and he's our boys basketball coach and i had parents come to me early on asking for what kind of qualities and characteristics i was looking at in terms of hiring a coach and my answer is always the same it's coaching kids for the game of life right of helping them establish these types of characteristics within themselves

as part of any program and he embodies this um one of the cool things that i uh really respected and admired by him is the first couple practices he brought his wife long and his children and uh he was showing the boys just the importance of his role in the you know the multiple different roles he plays in his life and how coaching is interrelated to that and i just thought that was really cool but i've been really impressed with what he's done and he embodies a lot of this language you've identified there so getting back a little bit to the wise um i think we're all pretty well familiar coming out of two years of seeing schools within the coveted realm that office and school-wide discipline referrals have been the highest in our history

and i presented some of this information and data in march again just reiterating that aggression defiance and disruption we're seeing that across all multiple learning levels and when that occurs it happens it's hard to optimize learning for individuals in the classroom as well as collectively across the class and across the school susan edwards and i in reviewing through our feedback from principals on our school safety reports the top priority indicator that came back from our principals is they feel we need a life skills curriculum to be able to help students and teachers so that we can minimize some of the behaviors that are being displayed in class and across the school programs that institute these also have measures of increased attendance engagement and academic achievement and then we want to help kids with their metacognitive

skill set so that they better understand the neuroscience of their brain and development as well as our teachers i think it's important to always remember that and then also just the prevention and character education piece as far as the wise um schools can develop positive cultures and climate uh by instituting this i just came back from a national school safety conference a couple of weeks back in san antonio uh we were able to take ryan japan back there one of the things that was prominent throughout the entire conference is uh presenters kept speaking to the importance of having a preventative tier one type of education and supports for mental health for students across the span um it can also reduce bullying racism and harassment claims within schools looking at the skill sets they're aligned with

the utah's department of workforce services so again looking at those characteristics and competencies of a portrait of a graduate and those being aligned with the future skill sets that are needed within the workplace here in utah it can strengthen school communities increase graduation rates provides as a platform for suicide prevention as well and as i was putting this together i came across this quote and it really kind of hit home struck a chord for me because as a principal this is really at the heart of what i felt a big part of my job was and that's creating a positive culture and climate within the school which students can benefit from because we know without that a lot of times students aren't going to meet their optimal needs as it relates to learning and their

academic achievement and their executive functioning skill set and so as i was crafting this this is a quote from me academic achievement engagement inclusion leadership intellect and school and life success are interdependent upon a student having their physical social emotional and psychological needs met and i firmly believe that and that you know tyson with abraham maslow's hierarchy of needs and i would equate the self-actualization at the top of that model uh to learning within the classroom and learning within the context of school and student achievement as a whole so one of the things we're able to do at alta high school is we're speaking about life school skills curriculum i thought it'd be good to provide an example of that we're in our ninth year just finished our ninth year i say hour because alta

was a part of me this last year at least the first half of the year um but this is a program that we really really were proud to institute and see the growth of it over time and some powerful results that came from that when we had our accreditation in 2017 from our external team that came in to review the school they could see that we had at that point in time the highest attendance rates the highest retention rates of students uh within the district and then the number one top-ranked priority that came out of our data uh in surveying students and parents is that they both felt that their their child had a safe adult that they could trust back at school and that particular accreditation team said it was very like uncommon for

large high schools of the size and stature of an alta high uh to have that be ranked as the top indicator um which we we were really proud of to be quite honest and i feel like our advisory program lended itself to that and that structure would allow for this life skills curriculum to continue in that fashion and as we created this again going back nine years ago we didn't have lessons and resources so we did actually uh use the seven habits of highly effective teens and so it's been interesting looking at those particular variables and how those are so even today closely aligned with a lot of the portrait of graduate um competencies and characteristics so you know things like being proactive uh you know which is responsible decision making um looking at the

end in mind as far as goal setting prioritizing thinking the win-win that self-confidence seeking to understand and be understood communication and empathy synergize so again collaborating with others with peers and then sharpening the saw which is important for all of us looking at our own wellness and what we're doing to help with that practice day in and day out so this is some discipline data i shared back in march and uh what i want you to look take a look at here is just looking at uh 2018-19 which would have been the year before covet struck and then looking at this past current year in terms of the data so we had just under 1300 office referrals in terms of an increase from 1819 to 2122 which again um information that we've already been privy

to but wanted to just reiterate that this is also a slide that i shared in march again just showing the commonalities between behaviors that we're seeing across the board at all three levels defiance being one of those that's across each level again i think as part of the life skills curriculum it's important for i think teachers and students both to have a better understanding of how the brain works you know in order for students to be in that that top tier right as far as our prefrontal lobe and cerebral cortex that's where the executive functioning critical thinking memorization ability to learn comes in which again that's our ultimate goal with our students and i think helping them understand how the brain works kind of from basement to you know second level if you will that

you've got the survival state emotional state and executive state and i think more more the more kids understand that and become aware of that um i think they they in turn you know are in tune with how to help best regulate themselves as it relates to school and impulsivity and learning in the classroom and things of that nature here's another quote that i came across that i found that was very fitting and that is that we know how much stress changes the brain so do acts of caring teaching learning and love kids learn and grow when meaningful connections are made with trusted adults and again that just brought home to me the platform that we were able to create with our advisory program where peers were making connections with one another for four years you

know students are making connection with adults again having the same teacher for four years and i just feel like it created a kind of a family fill family structure more intimate learning environment being a large high school and i think that's something that we can learn from charter schools a lot of times they really excel at that and do a great job and a lot of times it comes down to the sheer size and their focus but taking a large high school and looking at ways to institute meaningful connections i think is extremely important so this is also a slide i shared in march so just begins kind of reiterating that every behavior is an expression of need so we can look at the whys right as to why kids are acting out doing the

things that they're doing and assessing for that um and i think you know helping teachers understand you know if kids either have an emotional relational physical or controlled need and so for example if you had a student in class that time and time again you know you're assessing for the student needing to be in control well maybe you empower that student to have a leadership role in a peer group you know in class so looking at ways to be able to navigate that that's a benefit for kids and then again our youth you know our young people how do they tell us that they're in pain well again you look at the behaviors described there a lot of those again coinciding uh directly with what we're seeing with school and office referrals so i'm going

to turn some time over to dr rodrick lanward he's going to discuss a little about the technicalities the lesson plan template template our focal points the vertical alignment and kind of our thinking on a potential delivery system for the curriculum itself so i'll turn some time over to her so as brian mentioned we're looking at developing this curriculum and making sure that it's tied to the portion of a graduate and what was intended with our strategic plan we also wanted to ensure that we were aligning to our district practices and policies around evidence base so with us not adopting a full curriculum we want to make sure that whatever we are developing is still informed by evidence and research in terms of what's going to best support students in developing these skills so beginning with

the portrait of a graduate you have a graphic up here that has organized the 13 characteristics that the utah portrait of a graduate has and i know that there's discussion about what that will then translate and look like for canyon's portrait of a graduate again we're assuming that many of these characteristics will fall into what whatever that canyon's portrait graduate looks like so we began with these as our anchor and the state has done a lot of great work with these characteristics and defining the specific competencies and skills and what that would look like for a graduating utah student to have these characteristics what we wanted to do to make sure that we were using the evidence from the push of a graduate and also the research is pulling out all of the commonalities across

those 13 characteristics in terms of the skills so we identified from those what the state calls their p20 competencies and looked at the skills across those 13 characteristics and noticed that there was quite a lot of overlap we also then looked at the research around wellness and supporting students development of life skills and from both sets of information we were able to really kind of chunk or categorize the specific skills into focal points so those focal points um from the port of a graduate are really focused on understanding and managing emotions setting and achieving positive goals establishing and maintaining positive relationships feeling and showing empathy for others making responsible decisions and conflict resolution and we'll show you an example here of that in just a minute and again from those 13 characteristics these are the

skills that were overlapping most often in the utah portrait of a graduate so from those six focal points and again anchoring in the 13 characteristics at this point until canyons has adopted their own we've worked with some writing teams that dr mcgill's department has identified that includes both teachers and mental health professionals at the elementary and middle school level to write specific lesson plans in those focal areas across kindergarten through eighth grade so we've identified a specific lesson plan template that really utilizes the current structures that are available in our schools so for elementary that's looking at the morning meeting structure that was already in place even prior to the adoption of the previous curriculum that was in place as well as the advisory time that is in the majority of our middle schools at

this point so again looking at that particular time period and that focus of community building as the foundation of developing these specific skills but then organizing a lesson that really looks at developing those skills with explicit instruction and activities so here's an example of how all of those pieces have fit together so just in looking at the lifelong learning and personal growth as well as the hard work and resilience characteristics of the porch of a graduate you can see a list of all of the skills that are represented across those competencies uh pre-k through 12th grade in the states model so you see things like goal-setting persistence self-improvement leadership time management taking initiative and problem solving so thinking about those that falls into the focal point of setting and achieving positive goals we then identified

specific learning targets again we had the great opportunity to use what we could from the utah model because so much work has been done there and identify a specific grade level ban in terms of developmental learning targets so what would be expected in terms of setting and achieving positive goals kindergarten through second grade versus third through fifth grade and then sixth through eighth grade so you have an example of one of those targets the number of targets for each focal point varies again on the complexity of the skills that need to be taught for a student to master that by the time they leave in this case eighth grade so you can just see an example of setting and achieving positive goals for a k2 student one of the targets is the students will describe

steps and setting goals and working toward goal achievement you see how then that advances in third through fifth grade with students being able to set short-term personal and academic goals and make a plan for achieving them and then moving into the middle school level students are then able to assess their level of engagement in their own learning set realistic goals and persist until their goals are achieved so you see that developmental progression of how those skills play out for that particular focal point getting them to that competency of lifelong learning personal growth hard work and resilience the writing teams that are comprised as i mentioned before of the teachers and mental health professionals in middle and elementary schools are then designing lesson plans around those developmental learning targets so that we also have that vertical

articulation of the specific skills and then we're working to integrate digital citizenship lessons both in the lessons that the teams are developing and additional lessons so that again we can really start combining all of those pieces that we're trying to focus on and not have them be seen as separate so that's a little bit about how all of that pulls together brian's going to walk you through some of the next steps and how all of the work will be coming together thanks amber so as you can see up here uh our writing teams were given a pretty tall task right our strategic plan was recently rolled out uh one of the immediate needs that came out of our leadership meetings and cabinet was the development of creating a life skills lesson plan that again supports

very language that's found in our strategic vision and plan so walking through the timeline you can see it's a pretty tight sequence as far as dates um i do have to give credit where credit is due because it's summertime and a lot of these folks are working very diligently we've had to do a lot of virtual and digital correspondence with people being on vacations and that but i just i feel the need to to provide that credit back to our work groups and our teams that are putting so much work and effort and emphasis into this and they're very passionate about it so board update tonight we're going to do team lead check-ins later on in this week just to see where we're at as far as the development design and how many lessons we've

got established we'll be providing an overview uh again very similar to this presentation for all of our mental health and wellness staff on our welcome back day for all of our counselors school psychs nurses and social workers uh and i will be delivering that presentation to the wellness staff july 29th again end of this month is when we're hoping to have all the lessons be completed uh and be in a position to be able to be reviewed by the student services team as well as isd with the curriculum technical manual being able to be developed at the end of the month as well august 1st through the 5th so again early august looking at coalescing and organizing the curriculum scope and sequence loading it into for example canvas if that ends up in our delivery

system uh so that students and parents you know both have access rights to that information and then august 1st through 5th advisory review board so i'm in the process right now of establishing an advisory review board that we would take all the lessons and information to which is comprised of parents in each of our communities um some district leadership and then i've also asked steve wrigley to help serve in that capacity on that advisory review board so we have board leadership representation as well we can provide a board follow-up again on august 2nd just before teachers are back and potentially speaking we could have curriculum that could be technically ready to go by that august 8th so again the week that teachers are back um kind of a second phase to all of this so

looking at next step planning again we've been working very diligently over the last couple of weeks on this and we'll continue to do such over the next couple of weeks but i think it's critically important that as we roll out the curriculum the activities and the lessons and that that we institute some type of parental component as part of that so that we're reinforcing the standards um you know so for example you know depending upon how we want to roll this out like an example that could be taking the wellness characteristic of competency and k-8 you know messaging from communications going home parents um having reinforcement lessons an opportunity to connect with their kids as it relates to wellness and then again that reinforcement back at school um you know that's just one example of

you know ways we could roll it out as characteristics and competencies kind of month by month to keep things the messaging the same and then as part of that life skills advisory team again having parental support on that i would love to solicit feedback from them as it relates to those parent components and the reinforcements because i think we've got parents that can provide a lot of good feedback in the development of that over time and i would want their input as we move forward with this and i think that could be a great thing to add and the timing is perfect because over the next year we're going to be creating the framework for the portrait of the graduate as it looks like in canadian school district and so great uh opportunity to be

able to make that connection and really refine it and improve upon what we've created over this summer uh k-8 it's part of that next phase as well high school obviously 912. you know i just shared with you the example at alta high school and the advisory program that we have and how a lot of these characteristics and skill sets are taught through that and reinforced um you know potential options there again going out for an rfi or an rfp for a vendor platform or another option to all of this too could be taking the same steps that we've taken internally and creating life skill lessons for high schoolers 9 12 again using the same method that we've done this summer potentially next summer and utilizing you know our own staff our experts in-house and i

we have great representation from each of our school communities and we've got elementary and middle school teachers as well as elementary and middle school mental health experts within our district that are teaming together and the development of this um and so if we were to look to use a similar approach potentially we could have um you know life skills for high school rolled out and being implemented the following school year so questions that you have um i'm sure there are a lot of questions i'd like to see if superintendent would like to make any comments before asking questions thank you president team um so thank you brian and amber i just i know how much work's gone into this and i think um we get into the questions i i just appreciate the work i

one a couple of comments i want to make is one i think it's really important um equally as important to portrait of a graduate that those nine principles set out by the board uh in the strategic vision that those are drivers equal to to portrait of a graduate many of those are already intertwined and embedded as as you mentioned things like resilience and personal growth but for me i think you know equally and just as important service and respect you know is is intertwined and part of that as well so um and just my thinking on timeline i you guys have really just really put pedal to the metal on this so i i didn't i really you really uh went beyond what i expected but i think just following our our normal protocol and

timeline when it comes to curriculum and this being a little different but potentially you know a first reading for the board in august and a second in that second meeting and then potentially we would request action in september and i know that puts us a little bit behind school starts around the 15th i think or 16th of august so but part of that too is just following kind of what we've done before and making that visible to the public um you know i think we all know that all eyes are on this and will be on this and i think that's that's really important too so that's just a suggestion presenting you of maybe a consideration for you know how we go about actually what this might look like to adopt and and get it

out there but the needs there i i think you know the why is clear why this is necessary just but kind of trying to pull it into a framework that's familiar to our parents and the public might be something to think about great thank you okay now questions lord this is not power okay thank you so much for all the work uh this took a lot of time and a lot of thought and there's so many wonderful things in this um okay i'm gonna start out with on the lessons and activities it says eight lessons per grade and then it says equals 432 lessons so i'm not sure what that means what are we saying here so our work groups are in essence creating um 432 lessons as a whole so that's what they're working

on right now so each of the six work groups is creating eight lessons based upon that focal point over kate so in kindergarten you get eight lessons in first grade you get and you were just showing the totality that you're creating 432 lessons because each are going to be customized to the development and the age of the child okay all right and then i noticed you had digital citizenship makes up two of each of the eight which i love thank you i know i've talked a lot about that okay um i too had the same notes that um dr robbins talked about when we have identified skills we're missing honesty integrity responsibility accountability service um there was a slide when amber was speaking go back one more we don't have that on our version the

csd life skills focal points at least we didn't as of today at three i printed it out so those understand and manage emotions set and achieve positive goals i i don't see that on my version do any of my other fellow board members we didn't have that so i didn't notice that too and so i went back into board docs and it's it's not now it's been updated oh now it's been updated okay it wasn't it wasn't by four o'clock okay so the so though i have a couple of um thoughts on that the the csd life skill focal points i believe should reflect those those portrait of a graduate specifically the ones we've outlined in our strategic plan and so we're missing you know we have we're missing the service accountability honesty integrity so

we have some of those listed there or those the or those six the ones you're really counting on because i don't know that those are maybe encapsulating what our strategic plan specifically highlights as well as i know we had a lot of parents with concerns about the understanding and managing emotion section depending on how it's presented kids that have anxiety kids that go to therapy we just have to be so careful when we start talking about managing emotions in the classroom with a teacher and not a licensed therapist for those kids that need more of a tier three support and would be very uncomfortable talking about emotions and so i just would like us to really pause and think on that and i would personally like to see the life skill focal points really highlight

some of those other aspects like dr robin said that are specifically mentioned in our strategic plan so that's one thought um the other thing is you talked about parents and so listening feedback and having them be part of this and one thing i've mentioned before that i think would be a great idea is we have a lot of concern in the community right over the whole social emotional learning curriculum and we know it's so needed now more than ever we know that we need to be talking about some of these characteristics with our kids i would really love to see us do like a reverse classroom where the materials are sent home to the parent before they discuss it at school so that we're building that trust and confidence with our parents this is the

character education piece because there are parents that are very fearful and believe that we're trying to teach some other things than what we're trying to teach and so i think that if parents had that first look and an opportunity to discuss i think that also might help some of those parents who have children that go to therapists and have anxiety and have problems regulating their emotions that whatever pieces of that the parents are able to discuss ahead of time to coach their children ahead of time yes yeah and get that first discussion okay um let's see uh okay as far as uh we talked about inclusivity and helping all the kids get along and i was wondering if we may want to dovetail a little bit of the sunlight works training that we all have

been going through about enjoying and appreciating differences in others and i think it's such a positive message to celebrate you know differences in personalities and things like that so just a question is could we dovetail some of that sunlight works with that inclusivity piece and then oh do you want to answer some of these and then i have a few more questions sure yeah where do you want me to start um reverse classroom idea yeah i mean i would be all for it i'm like i said i'm a father of a son who fits that classification right uh and as a father being able to have that opportunity to help coach him as it interrelates to that particular characteristic or trait that might be taught for the week i think could be very beneficial so

okay great and then are we set on those focal points or do we have some flexibility there because i don't know that all of those totally encapsulate the 13. i would say we've got some flexibility i don't know amber if you want to speak to any more of the focal points but sure we i think that you know because we're creating our our curriculum we obviously have a lot of flexibility i think it depends on again what are our what are we trying to get with this curriculum and so when we're talking about things like respect lifelong learning honesty integrity and responsibility we still have to identify what is it about honesty that we expect our students to know and be able to do what is it about respect that we expect our students to

know and be able to do so those things have to be translated into competencies and then skills that are specific to that competency and drawn out across a k-12 spectrum right because what you're teaching about respect in a kindergarten classroom is going to look very different than a seventh grade classroom and so that's why as we were figuring out the frame in how to make these explicit skill based lessons instead of just kind of ethereal ideas that aren't as concrete for student learners we really looked at what the state has do has done because all of those that you identify in the strategic plan are also in the state portrait of a graduate where they have identified a number of skills and competencies we looked at the overlap and that overlap is how we came

up with these six categories so in terms of the the categories we can certainly look at that we'd want to just make sure that again we're identifying specific targets and skills instead of just a specific category or word so to speak so what would service look like in terms of skill development for kindergarten versus third grade versus sixth grade and honesty and those things okay right that sounds really good okay i'll be quick i know my fellow board members probably have a lot of questions too the seven habits have highly effective teams in ninth year can we talk about that i don't know is that is that something we're looking at implementing no i was just referencing that as we use that as part of our criteria for the advisory program at alta oh so

going back nine years ago there really wasn't much of a platform and we knew we needed to do something and so we utilized that and had a lot of success with it so i know a lot of the kids in the high schools have been have been doing things with those seven habits and and thought that was an interesting point to try to put some of that in there as well i know we're not doing high school right now but for middle school too okay i'm gonna i have a few more but let me pass it over to someone else first thank you okay thank you and and for just um reminder this is kind of an information piece and um that that we're receiving and so questions and i mean it's just kind of

we've been on this for two weeks so i mean it's definitely in it it's very much in its infant stage but we need to be mindful that the administration has put a lot of work into this and that at some point we will see actual finished lesson plans and product and at that point we can also you know review that and provide some input and i think something that's important here too is you know any particular program it's not it's more than an activity a lesson right i mean a lot of these characteristics and competencies i mean i look at my own life and my life experiences my experiences in school my experiences outside of school and various things have all led itself to creating opportunities within each of these areas and so i think

as we look at the school model and as we flush out the portrait of a gradual this next year like what does that look like for canyons the service piece may be a component of that right that's built within that framework but maybe not a lesson per se if that makes sense i think it's important to encapsulate each of these competencies and characteristics uh into that framework that we create for what that looks like for a canyons student but i think any successful program is going to go beyond just a lesson or an activity or something like that if that makes sense because really it needs to be driven from home driven from you know teachers the student themselves need to uh you know take on ownership and the process as well so thank you

mrs oakes so kind of in response to some of what was said with regard to reverse classroom um i i feel uncomfortable with that for a few different reasons one is that it would require you to create video content right i mean which just like a whole other level of i mean are we going to do all video content for the the classrooms as it is is that the plan well if we use canvas as a platform there could be some video components that are built within the framework for that lesson well so i just want to distinguish and maybe we can have a discussion about this that there is a difference between teaching soft skills versus tier two tier three right i mean and part of what we're discussing here are soft skills of

giving kids a basic understanding of how mental health works how the brain functions how that works with emotions giving them information that's useful for them to be able to apply in their life every day when the whole situation surrounding second step came up i spent time talking to a child's clinical psychologist in the area and he pointed out you know there i can understand the concern that parents have if you're implementing tier two or tier three in a classroom with the teacher that is not licensed to do that but he you know he pointed out soft skills are absolutely appropriate and those are something that can be shared widely i i think it's it's needed and the concern with the reverse classroom in particular is that the kids that need it very most are likely

the ones that are not going to have parents that review it with them at home and you know trying to make sure that equitably speaking all of the kids are are getting access to information you know similar to what you're showing with the brain diagram i think that's useful i think it's useful for me to share with my youngest who's in going into fourth grade i think it would help him better understand when we have conversations when he gets emotionally hijacked at home but um i anyway i think we have to be careful about how we're directing the administration on how to do some of this and and um but i love where we're starting i think it's helpful that we have the state resources attached to the utep portrait of a graduate and that

they really have broken out those pieces similar to what amber was saying and i think so much of their content's really excellent i think there's a lot that we can do and i know that there are resources out there with regard to some of what we're discussing that could be um utilized and be very helpful so i really appreciate all the work you've done on it thank you and again i mean a lot of that credit is going to go back to the work groups and the specialists that are the team leads on each of the different different six focal points and the competencies so um thank you mr millerberg and then mr wrigley dr miguel i can tell a lot of work has gone into this and i amanda you borrowed the phrase i

was going to use with soft skills and soft skills are important no doubt about it but they're kind of ambiguous they're kind of hard to measure they're kind of hard to define but they're still important i will be the first to say that to be able to set and achieve positive goals that is a real valuable life skill now what that looks like and i'm sure this will get into your individual lessons that you teach it's kind of hard to determine that somebody mastered that and knows what they're doing and i like what you have there but i'm kind of feeling like i'm missing some real key components of hard skills and as i look at the you know your title up here is your life skills curriculum and as i look at the utah

portrait of a graduate and i know they're 13 there so this is kind of ambiguous too because i'm going to say if you look at the one that sits at about seven o'clock okay i am here to tell you that in my opinion being able to show civic uh literacy to show financial literacy and to be show able to show economic literacy are life skills and in today's world if you don't have those skills i got to tell you you're in a lot of trouble yeah and i think it's important too as we look at these characteristics and competencies um you know our lessons aren't going to encapsulate everything but like i look at the high school for example students take a financial literacy class that's required for graduation so there could be components to

this as we build within the framework for canyons that might uh you know include that kind of stuff versus just specific lessons for life skills just between us okay and everybody listening okay um what percent of our graduating high school seniors that just went through graduation if i sat down with them and said here's a bank statement can you reconcile it what percent do you think could of our high school graduates i hopefully in canyon's a high number you believe it or do you hope it if i had to take a guess uh sixty percent fifty percent sixty would you say sixty percent fifty is fifty i don't know that's kinda that's kind of that's kind of low that's scary to me how many of them if i walked up to them on the street

right now and said can you tell me where the three branches of the united states government are and how they function and how they uh get them put in place what percent do you think could do that for me thirty percent thirty percent i don't know just taking us taking a step i i just look at these things and i get scared for for kids they're not coming out with hard skills now i understand there are some of our kids that are extremely bright some kids that get it but i don't know if we're doing an adequate job on teaching some of these skills and the civic financial and economic literacy area it really scares me when they go out in the job market when they go out and they establish their own families i'm

scared and so i'm not going to tell you what to do i'm just telling you that i'm feeling that lacking in there okay that's good feedback thank you thank you mr wrigley just quickly i think some of the stuff much you're talking about is maybe a civil some actual classes we have a financial class but actually actual classes we do on that would be helpful well we do have some actual classes but i don't know how much of their retaining yeah yeah well okay so um just sort of bring this back for those who not follow this saga going back for the last eight years or more this has been something that we've been trying to do as far as doing some character education life skill stuff uh we felt a need for that in

the school district the teachers were asking for that and so we initially started off with second step uh then last year we learned that second stack went a different direction than we needed to go and we had some real concerns because they learned went from social emotional learning to transformative social emotional learning which and then put in stuff that we didn't want to castle their accreditation went a different direction so uh at that time we pulled the second step program and i believe the superintendent made the decision that we and it was a good decision we go with our own so that we don't have to worry about being embarrassed in the future with them going a different direction then we need to go so that's what sort of sort of started this whole thing

going um we had a lot of our teachers last year saying i've got to have some kind of a program to deal with the soft skills or the eq the emotional intelligence skills for our kids especially with all the complications from covet and covert coming in so it affected the classrooms what was going on in the classroom it affected the ability the teachers to teach and that has been the main reason why we spent all this time i've had people in campaigning this year said well you don't need to teach those things just teach reading writing arithmetic uh that would be nice but in today's world a lot of our kids could not learn if they didn't have the soft skills we've been talking about um so we're trying to put together a program that

did that i see the program you're putting out basically is sort of a pilot curriculum we maybe need to expect that of it that it's a first year it's a pilot curriculum you're putting it together we're going to be doing this i would even probably even recommend that we take a look and build and test and build maybe we just take a look as a quarter rather than having this responsibility for a whole year because like the bridges that were built here in utah they build a bridge they had learned from the bridge re-go back again build the next bridge better and build the next bridge better so i'm wondering as you put this together uh it might be better to go more quality and deeper on a quarter lesson and then re-advance say does

this work and then and then at the end this pilot will be more stronger than to say we're going to put together for in some lessons and then find out that uh now that didn't tweak we need to tweak four and four lessons so it might be easier to just focus on the first quarter and then we have like three quarters and then and then we could reassess that that again um it it's been this this um so anyway i would have a suggestion maybe as we take a look at this it might take some of the pressure off the staff but i think the board needs to look that this is a pilot program yeah and we're not going for crap castle accreditation right uh anyway we're gonna stay away from all that stuff

and we'll have more control than what's what's going on um the life skill focus of this is really going to be really important but i think you're talking about more of the eq skills this the emotional intelligence skills uh when you get a job nowadays um and i've had many people over the years that i've supervised had the educational level but their eq skills were terrible their action skills their empathy skills their you know their civility skills their respect skills uh and that's what gets people fired so i'm that that's the other college career and life skill ready i guess we're talking about as we move on that um so i'm really excited about this and what's coming forward from from this that we're going to i mean most the districts are still on second

step other districts have put it out for bids for people across the country we have the expertise in our own industry to sort of put this together we'll have more control of it it's going to be i don't know cost i don't probably cost the same because we're putting a bunch of money into it but it'll be our system that we can be sure that we're not getting critical race theory in this program i like it you're volume parents you're involving a lot of parents and all kinds of constituents in this particular process uh so that the final product will have hopefully have the buy-in like the idea of maybe sending it out to the parents and trying to evolve that uh and involving the parents so i applaud you for all you're doing on

this and it looks like you're moving in the right direction and uh i'll be glad to see it that our teachers will have something starting next year because they've been just screaming for this they have to have something so thank you thanks steve thank you this is show okay um i'm just going to add my thanks to you and all the committees all the teachers that are working on this because i do think it's really important and i think what you've outlined looks good to me um i my questions are just about how are we going to train the teachers like are these lessons going to be hard is it going to be a burden on teachers that's what i'm worried about like what is probably a question for amber i'll turn some time over

her she's our master teacher trainer okay so part of the design in the lesson planning template um was designed with the teachers in mind and the feedback that they've been giving us over the last couple of years with curriculum that was previously adopted for social and emotional learning so we are hoping that these lessons are really easy to be able to really review quickly and then implement so there's some background information around the skill um there's a pretty specific outline of how the lesson could be implemented and they're also very short lessons and then how they can be reinforced throughout the week so yes there will need to be some training and we're looking at some um options for how we would organize that at the beginning of the school year to be able to

support schools with that initial implementation and then the ongoing follow-up would be from both of our departments with our coaches and specialists and supporting the teachers with that implementation does that help yeah that sounds great um my second question is i just well i disagree with what some of the other board members have said where i think it'd be really nice if we send something out to parents like i think just a short these are this is the topic maybe here's a question or two parents can talk to their kid about um that was really helpful as a parent when when the school did that but they did that after the fact with second step and so i think maybe before would be great i don't think it has to be a video it doesn't

have to be a long thing just similar to how we how we do with other um curricula in terms of this is the focus and here's what you can expect yeah i think that would be great um and then just i just want to make sure we're really transparent with parents with this you know so i don't know we just need to be really careful with how we message this and make sure it is transparent and parents i mean that'd be great if it's on canvas so parents can look it up okay thank you thank you both yeah and amber just to uh to speak to that we've actually had some conversations as our development teams of uh and i referenced this as well but maybe looking at like a particular characteristic or competency and

as a district focusing on that for a given month so that it provides everybody an opportunity and the messaging is strong and loud and clear and consistent right so whether it's from jeff and communications going out uh justin anderson is part of his team putting a parent video out for the parent community which he and i just had some dialogue today on about creating some of those for parents um just to make sure that we're you know we're focused in collectively together and that parents teachers students and us are all working towards kind of the same you know common vested goal if you will um and as we develop the portrait of a graduate again in terms of what that looks like for canyons you know going back to some things that mom was mentioning

we are going to have to look internally about outcome measures like how are we going to go go about measuring and assessing and what data are we going to uh be capturing to ensure that we're meeting the criteria success of what we're what we've set out to do so okay that sounds great i love i love that idea okay thank you um mrs nybar another comment just really quick when i look at those focal points i'd love to have some focus on others when i look at the first few it's kind of a focus on self and just coming into my mind as i was reading these life skills curriculum you know it talks about honesty i can be honest or i can show respect and kindness to others i i can i can help

without expecting recognition like service i just would um i'm really excited i love the work that has been done and i i really look forward to focal points where the kids are learning to look outside of themselves with kindness and respect so which goes back to that civic peace that mont was speaking to yes yeah okay thank you i too am so grateful for all the work that has been and will yet be done on this as i said earlier this is just the beginning and to some of the points that the other board members have made i see it as this and right i mean this is a piece of a really much larger structure that we're trying to implement and we can't implement everything at the beginning so we start with this and

include and adjust and and bring other things on board so i you know i i really appreciate this discussion um and i just want to um like i mentioned the work yet to be done because i think it's my understanding that the board would appreciate coming this coming back on as superintendent mentioned at our next board meeting with some specific lessons that we can actually look at and review and get a feel for what it is you're you're you're designing and and also at that point then they would be available to the public for their review and take a look at them as well and i don't think that means all 480 whatever lessons need to be done but but enough of them that that we get a feel for it and and then can

talk a little bit also maybe come back with some of the implementation and training information that that the administration is looking at on board is there anything else that we talked about that would be helpful information for next time okay well again thank you yeah and i appreciate having this opportunity and and receiving feedback because we are in this infancy stage of development right now that where let's have these collaborative conversations and let's get it on the right track and make sure that we're headed in the right direction uh collectively together um so i appreciate the feedback from the board and our leadership and dr robin so that we can move this in the right direction and it is going to be a process of refinement over time it just is so and again i

want to give credit to our teachers and staff that have been working diligently on this because they they do deserve a lot of credit they've been put a lot of time and effort and energy into it so great thank you and i just had another thought that i want to clarify for myself and maybe others if they need the clarification but it was mentioned about kind of a reverse classroom approach but then it was also mentioned about no just get information to the parents ahead of time and i think those are two separate things um you know reverse or flipped classroom is a little more labor-intensive on that front-end and uh but but giving notification and you know an outline or something to the parents prior to the instruction being given in the classroom and

if i'm not i just want to correct that that's kind of was more what we were looking towards doing and that was my intent thank you for bringing that up when i mentioned that i didn't mean that there'd be videos and a lecture watching at home it's just materials go to the parents first so they can have the first initiation of conversation about it thank you all right thank you i think that concludes this item we'll look forward to seeing you in a few weeks awesome great thank you appreciate it okay board um last item on under study items and this is a follow-up from our previous board meeting where the superintendent suggested that we form some additional board committees so superintendent i'm just gonna before we as a board talk about that will you

review what that yeah so i appreciate that president in our last board meeting work session we talked a little bit about um implementation of strategic vision and you know what that might look like as we engage that and i want to make clear i think it's really important that you know we all understand that the strategic vision does belong to the board and it's driven by the board and having said that it's really up to administration then to execute and implement the board's vision so i think for me the the strength in that vision is that the document really is a living document that it it's not something that's just put on the shelf and you know five years later it's it's reviewed but that it really is um utilized and engaged often we talked

a lot about you know this being a north star and a guiding document that's flexible that may need to be changed over time and i think to really do that that's going to require an ongoing relationship between the board administration and our parents our students and our patrons and so i think from that premise and that relationship and how important that is which you know you think about all of the committees that we have most of those are really centered around operations things like policy committee or planning calendar you know they're more task oriented but i see these committees as very much high level advisory roles that would serve to provide feedback and that engagement between board and and cabinet one really strengthens that trust and that relationship and within that comes transparency and accountability

uh and you know really sustainability for for long term so that's i i don't know that you know it needs to be the same people on each focus area every year maybe it's a two-year assignment or whatever you know the board chooses to do that could be a rotation even within cabinet and it sort of fell in those four areas with at least within cabinet just kind of in those natural areas of of leadership and expertise but it doesn't necessarily need to be that way but i i really think going forward um for this you know really to be what i think we want it to be um having that opportunity to provide that kind of feedback and leadership would be a really positive thing so that's kind of where i'm coming from on that

that proposal thank you and and um how often do you see the committee's meeting my suggestion would be um more frequent uh probably to begin with and i know i'm not trying to just create more meetings you know most of our committees are once a month at least i i think getting off the ground for example you know in high quality learning especially where we're implementing district-wide plc's this fall that that committee would likely meet you know more often just because that's that's probably going to be necessary to really you know gain the necessary feedback to inform practice and how we can improve out of the shoot but from there i think once they're established at most once you know maybe a quarter or or semester or whatever the group determines that some are going

to require more assistance and probably more need than others okay thank you okay board um so so that would be four committees in addition to the committees that we already have in place and i'm just kind of looking at a list we have some standing committees that like the audit committee the policy committee long-range planning committee arts consortium rdacda instant incident command or emergency management team calendar committee and help help curriculum committee and each of those committees kind of have a varying schedule as far as how how often they meet but so this nes these four committees would not necessarily replace any of those committees and so um anyway that's the suggestion and the reason so the well the four areas of focus would be high quality learning access and opportunity human-centered supports and operations

so so um as per our practice with committees we could have two to three board members on each serving on each committee and if we want to proceed with with this approach i suggest that [Music] and i don't know if you all are prepared at this point to suggest which committees you'd like to serve on or if you want to just talk first before we start talking about assignments about this suggestion and if you have any questions or comments on it or thoughts mr miller just a quick question you've got four committees and we have seven board members and you said uh you can have up to three on each committee how many committees would you expect each board member to be on would are you looking at one two three i i think that

would be um up to the board member what kind of time they could commit but clearly not everyone can have three yeah and and not everyone can have two who are you looking for that's what i mean not not everyone can have two even if we have three board members right three times four is twelve yeah i know it's summer but i think i can still remember that yeah so one one two two so are you looking for volunteers to have one is that what you're saying i'm i if if someone wants only one that's fine because um if they happen to be serving on on a couple other committees that are you know time and taking a little more time you know to balance things out i think that's totally appropriate any other questions

or thoughts what if what if we just go through the committees and people say who wants to do who's interested and then see how it falls okay are you ready tonight to do that or okay all right amber or mrs schill you can start um i would like to be on the high quality teaching and learning is that what it is just because i was on that um during the process of the strategic planning so i have a little background on that so but i i mean i'm fine to be on anything but that would be my first choice oh actually while we're doing this let's do a first and second choice just to see that'll help it uh human-centered support that's my second okay this is my power i'm gonna say ditto i was

on the access to high quality learning during workshop and would enjoy being able to continue and then my second would be human-centered supports as well okay thank you mr wrigley okay so um sorry high quality or human centered as your first and then high quality learning is your second choice okay mrs oaks so number one for sure would be high quality learning experiences and then i wouldn't mind doing access and opportunity and i'm okay actually doing governance too for you know operations mr miller i choose not to be offended steve i think that you've referred to me nobody the first one on my list was operations i knew [Music] um i i would be fine to serve on any of them uh on my list i put the three operations high quality learning which sounds

like you've got a plethora of people for that and access to quality alert whatever that access and opportunity access and opportunities so i'll put that one down as your second i'll put that down those are my three in order sorry okay i missed i missed then so i touched on operations high quality learning and access and opportunities which basically i'm telling you put me where you need me okay well yep too many on high quality learning so um i'm okay to be on anything really so yeah you can just put me wherever and then so are you thank you for giving that input but we need to remember mrs arnold um give her an opportunity to select some and then so if you all are okay you've given me your input on it i'll collect

her thoughts on it and then i will put together the assignments and get that information out to you okay i went all right with that yeah okay and well i think there's enough interest that we have two to three people on each committee and we can give you a third choice after this if you need it too yeah i think between me and mrs um arnold will fill them out but go ahead if you want to give a thumbs up okay and my third would be the access an opportunity okay great any other thoughts so so i'll get that information to you and i think we'll just set a target that in some time in august we'll start scheduling the meetings and and the superintendent will assign the members of the committee that come from

cabinet okay all right anything else on this item okay that concludes that discussion then thank you all um next on the agenda we will um invite comments from the superintendent and then our superintendent robbins and then business administrator mr wilcox um not too much tonight i know uh board members may want to comment on this but uh today uh first lady abby cox held her show up for teachers conference down at salt palace and um i just want to say thanks to her and governor cox for their support and the organization and all that was put into that was awesome to our teachers were there many of our cea leadership was there as well and it was just a really uh positive and much needed uh kind of boost you know there's been so much

that's happened over the last couple of years with the pandemic and everything else and um just i i felt really rejuvenated to see so many teachers on their time you know really just dedicated to kids in our state and abby cox i heard her say that they want to do this again so i think it'll just continue to gain momentum and everything that you know she does as first class and that was put on full display today so it's much appreciation to all the leaders in our state especially first lady for their support thank you mr wilcox yes thank you president timmy a few things one we've just finished up our budget book we hope to post that to the web tomorrow if you'd like a printed copy let us know and we'll print your

copy or if not just get it from the web one of the things we want to get it out there is tax statements were mailed emailed today if you want signed up for the email version uh you will notice on that the state did put the sb 293 from the 2018 session that's when the state basic rate was florida that amount it did go up to you know on the average tax home in our district would go up about 135 dollars so they have referenced that bill we haven't heard anything yet but again they were just emailed today most take the printed copies which should be mailed out later you know you know this week or next week so i just wanted to make you aware of that then just a quick update on glacier

hills peruvian park we are moving progressing not as quickly as we want we're still planning to occupy glacier hills on august 15th we have a plan set out to do that that's when school starts we'll occupy it before that of course and have the ribbon cutting on the 11th but still ready to have school there won't be as finished as we'd like but we've dealt with that in a couple of our schools in the last couple years we've had serious statewide shortages on concrete and glass and aluminum that frames in the glass or the aluminum and the glass been impacted by the baltic region so a lot of that is shipped from there so we're going to have a meeting tomorrow on peruvian and get more information on that again we're still looking at the

end of september it could go into october again the glass and the concrete are the big problems there so it's just uh supply chain issues across the nation really impacted all projects what i'm hearing have been more concerned about ours so uh we'll try to keep you updated but and the community updated at these two schools but again we are planning on glacier hills being done and going then so on again we're cutting august 11th it's first day of school august 15th so yeah but it's a if you'd like to go see it it's uh i don't know if anybody's looking around i don't know if anybody's in here has been in it but it's a beautiful school we are really really proud of what has turned out in there so we're excited for that

community and uh that's all i have thank you great thank you yeah that's exciting ribbon cuttings are really fun events so thank you okay now board board members can give comments um let's start down here mr millerberg thank you president the superintendent mentioned that some of us have the opportunity this morning well today uh to attend uh the program that was put on by our first lady abby cox she has had an initiative that she put in place called show up utah which is basically my terminology which i'll buffer some is get off your butt and do something [Music] and as part of the show up utah initiative she has done today was show up for teachers and i've got to tell you i was so impressed this morning the governor came and spoke uh

abby spoke to us the program they had outlined was exceptionally well executed well planned and the thrust of this was social and emotional wellness for our teachers not so much what they can take into the classroom because i believe our first lady understands that if the teacher is not socially and emotionally well it's extremely difficult to be an effective teacher as i said it was well organized this was done at no cost to the teachers emails were sent out statewide it was interesting bumped into my former neighbor from saint george was at the conference and i had to take a double take to remember who she was so teachers from all over the state were there the community support i thought was amazing the companies that stepped in and sponsored and made things available they

had prize drawings and these were not just little prizes it's not like you got a stick of chewing gum or anything they had a couple of life uh what is it what life plastic people what are the canoe lifetime there we are they had a couple of lifetime kayaks they gave away they had 500 gift certificates for delta airlines it was given away to name just a few um it was interesting there was a couple at the uh where the prices were being given out that i'm fairly well acquainted with um and i was there as i was leaving stopped it by the the booth to talk to him for a minute and they had a teacher come up and it makes i'm not the emotional type okay i'm not allergy that's what it is

it's allergies i've got the teacher said is this for me i don't have to take it to school and use it in my classroom it's for me um their keynote speakers were outstanding the whole day was well planned and i think to have our first lady realize the importance of what goes on in the classroom and to have a teacher advocate at that level is so important for us everything i can tell this is going to become an annual event they had 1500 teachers sign up for today um my bet is is next year i'm going to be conservative i'm betting double is what they'll say and kudos to the teachers we had a pretty good group from uh from canyon school district that showed up today um they're doing this on their own time

just because they are concerned and want to be better teachers the only other thing i have is many of you are aware that dr robbins is making an effort to do some one-on-one time with board members to get to know us better this uh i should say last week i had my turn in the barrel and dr robbins i appreciate very much you making the effort to do that uh that means a lot to me uh and i think that will strengthen board and superintendent relations a lot so thank you for doing that i'm done just so you don't have to ask me if i'm done thank you mrs oakes thanks i love that report i was really sad that i couldn't go today um i had to choose between either that event or to

go up to the state capitol today for the announcement that the point um point of the mountain commission had on who they were choosing for their uh developer for the first phase of development so just to bring everybody up to speed um the point of the mountain of course is the area um out where the state prison is um where we have roughly between six and seven hundred acres that are owned by the state and and the prison is being moved um actually currently i believe that they're in the last stages of moving the inmates to the new prison and demolition will be starting later this year and um in the meantime a lot of things are moving forward and they have a the development and the work um that has gone into this whole

thing is amazing and they've they have been over backwards to really try and get all sorts of community input about what they're hoping to see they have a whole river to range concept where they go from the jordan river up to um corner canyon where you can you could literally ride your bike um into work and be up in the canyon for lunch and come back i mean it's it's a really incredible space and they want it to be innovative and innovative with education and so being able to be on that committee and speak to the need for k-12 public education interests has been a real privilege today they announced um who they awarded the the initial uh contract to as far as and development for what they refer to as the hub and it's

going to be a group um which is the colemina group and wadsworth development and as they move forward we will be continuing to have a conversations um representative jefferson moss was there and he has been discussing a lot of things with higher ed he and i had a good conversation at the end of the meeting today discussing the importance of making sure that that handoff between k-12 to the university level is functioning really well and that we're understanding and being well informed about what it is they really need from us and um because they're really having that conversation from university to industry interests so anyway a lot of wonderful things that are going on there i think we live in a very exciting time there's there's a lot of room for improvement especially with regard

to the tech industry of of what we can be doing um the other thing i'd like to say is you know i know steve has mentioned this but in the campaign that we've had going on this year it has been um an amazing and grueling and exhausting and you can give all sorts of adjectives to experience to knock doors all over again and to make phone calls and talk to people and talk to people and talk to people and i've lost track of how many hours i've been on the phone or on people's doorsteps but having really interesting and important conversations i i have thought quite often how um inspired it is that we really have you know two-term or two-year or four-year terms because each time you run for re-election it gives you this

opportunity to get to know all over again what's going on in the community like it it forces you out in a different sort of way and um we've had concerns all the way from um you know school safety of course to is crt really being taught in our schools are my children going to be indoctrinated to you know how are we including everybody it's there's a wide range of concerns and and thoughts one of the things i would like to address and i've spoken with the superintendent about this recently a lot of people do have concerns about civics and how well we're teaching kids about civics and government and um and i know this is one of the downfalls i feel like of the known child left behind act while it was very well intentioned

one of the unintended consequences is that if you didn't you don't fall within those three major subjects that are tested and graded upon in our school grading system and you know sometimes some of those other subjects fall by the wayside and i feel like social studies and civics are one of them and i really would like us as a district to get back to looking at how we can better re-emphasize that i know there are things that as a district we have done above and beyond you know constitution day is one of them thank you mom but i feel like we can maybe look a little bit deeper and make sure that starting early on in the elementary and and moving forward that there are points of contact that the kids are are kind of

like what matt was saying are understanding what our free branches of government are what is actually in the constitution i can't even tell you how many have different definitions of the constitution right now it's almost dizzying and like the conversations i have with them you know even about things like crt the definitions of what crt are obviously all across the board but i'm finding that the same thing is true of basic principles that are you know in our government so i feel like that might be worth having more of a discussion as a board and um i would like to see that in the future but i i really appreciate our community we have a lot of wonderful members of the community that are deeply concerned about what's happening in the schools they really want

to see wonderful things so many of them were very complementary too but just a wide range of things i've been keeping notes and keeping track of things and so it's it's helped me to become a better informed board member and i'm really appreciative of that whole process thank you mr wrigley like amanda i have a love hate relationship with campaigning i just love getting the opportunity to go out and speak with our parents i think i've probably spoken to 500 people and i don't know how many thousands of doors put stuff on get a lot of good insight from individuals uh however i was walking in about 95 degree weather a couple days ago and i said who in their right mind would never do this the way i said well i guess i'm not

my right mind uh you have to have a real strong line a real strong love to to do this and i appreciate all those that are doing that at this time um the other thing i noticed is i went door to door i spent a lot of time being a door-to-door guidance counselor uh there was a lot of families that do not understand what we have all the different programs we have the delve were different options and as i explained it to them they're like oh yeah we should do that oh we should do that so it really points out the need as we've been talking about some of the meetings of moving forward and getting this out and and telling people all the great things that we were doing um [Music] the other thing

that's come out and and i'm not sure how we do with this and maybe just being more open and getting stuff out to the public is um there's a lot of stuff on social media going on nationally and i feel sometimes i'm not campaigning for this for this for the canyon school work but i'm campaigning against the virginia school board a lot of stuff people feel that this is actually in our school district and i want to let people know that we're doing our darndest to not become some of the school districts that are on social media all the time and i think you need to spend some times in the schools and be assured because i have a couple of people said well things are the school district public education just going to hell

in a hound basket i need to take my kid out and i'm going i don't think we're there i think we're trying everything as a board to to keep that from coming in though sometimes i feel like the little dust bowl with my fingers in the psych because of all the stuff that comes in at us but um for those people i want to say we're trying our darndest to provide that quality education that people are seeking for their kids every member of the administration on the board and our teachers are trying to do that and with that i'm going to say goodnight thank you mrs nybar i would just like to take a brief minute to express my gratitude for our recent national holiday for independence day lyndon b johnson said not merely a

nation but a nation of nations and i i really feel that way and i feel that we are what a wonderful opportunity to live in this country and to be able to enjoy all that we enjoy and for all those lives that have been spent to preserve our freedoms and our democracy harry s truman said america was not built on fear america was built on courage on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand recently with the tragedy of the shootings it can be easy for people to become fearful and and to live in in a state of fear and i think that harry s truman was right when he said that you know our country was built on courage and this determination to do the job at hand and that's what

makes the difference for us that we carry on i'm grateful to see we're still doing parades right with extra safety protocols but that we aren't going to be shuttered by fear i take a lot of um i feel a lot of joy when i drive past our schools and i see so many cars there our teachers working hard and and my son's benefiting from teachers being there during the summer hours with the extracurriculars that they're doing these are our teachers have many times in the last few years felt fear with the pandemic and other things going on and yet they have had that determination to do the job at hand and i'm grateful for them the other experience i just had this past week was attending my aunt's funeral and she is one of the

kindest people i i've ever met and she was able to express her kindness and love to each of us in her lives and so many people and when you were around her you could feel how much confidence she had in you and you had a hope and a belief that you could be even better than you were and as we just had this awesome work during summer hours from dr roderick landward and dr mcgill i think on that we had a patron a year or two ago that was sending us these emails about how we can help our kids be confident if we send positive affirmations and she would send those to us frequently and i i think that's so true i think as our kids go to school and feel loved and valued by

their teachers and their peers we build that sense of community that cannot be broken and i'm i'm so grateful to have seen that in my kids classrooms this past year and that sense of community i'm just so grateful for all the great work that is being done in this district the hands of our teachers our administrators our district employees and and the board members and our superintendents so i'm i'm just very grateful and and humbled to be a part of the process and that's it thanks thank you mrs shill so i was able to attend that conference today as well which was um for teachers and i'm not mom did a very detailed explanation of it so i won't add too much other than it was just great to be there with teachers and everything

was free like all these businesses had come together and you could just walk around the exhibit hall and just get all this free stuff and lunch was free and snacks were free anyway i've just never been to a conference that's everything is free so it was amazing and i was just really happy for teachers and we did have a good group of teachers there but i just i hope that next year we can get even more because it was really well worth the time and focusing on just the mental well-being of teachers and i i think it was worthwhile time spent um i also just want to say thank you to our administrators and i was really happy in our board update um this week or last week i should say the superintendent just said

how um this is the first time in two years basically that our administrators have had the summer and been able to go on a little trip or take a break so anyway i'm just really grateful to them and grateful for all the work they've been in the last two years and i'm just glad hopefully you guys are getting a break this summer so i just appreciate that thank you um i see that we've passed the 9 30 hour so i'm not going to to go on because um i i too was able to attend that conference and it was really a great experience and i'm i'm grateful to first lady cox for and her committee and all that worked hard on that conference and one of the things that well i had a lot of

takeaways but one of the things that just comes to my mind right now is that one of the things that educators said they desired most when talking about kind of their ideal culture is a culture of acknowledgement and i've thought a lot about that word today acknowledgement it's not it's it's an inclusive term that includes expression of appreciation but it also includes understanding of what someone's going through and what they what maybe their burden is or what the work is that they're doing the difficulty of it and so i just i just personally want to just work on being better at acknowledging things and not just expressing kind of superficial things but really sincerely and genuinely acknowledging and um and so i just um with that thought in mind i just want to acknowledge the

great work that everyone is doing and the difficulty is has been mentioned you know it is summer and some are getting a break and some are not wait is that what summer's about and um so i hope that in the weeks that are left of summer that that we can all just have a break and kind of get get re-reestablished and ready to go because i think this new school year has we saw tonight it's going to be off to a really fast and furious start i think upon us so anyway with that if there's anything else all right i will adjourn the meeting then and wish you all a great few weeks till we meet again oh
