001Defining the role of a school board is topline governance. We basically are at that 10,000 ft level. Our role is overseeing the top of it and putting valued people and great assets in place to do that hands-on work. >> We have about close to 700 [music] students in the Chimum School District. Those primarily are from preschool to 12. We've been focused primarily in our schoolboard work in [music] Chimikum around closing gaps. We believe that all students are successful when they have their needs met [music] and there are barriers that are removed. That's one of the things that I wanted to do as a board member was to make data something that we looked at publicly in a clear sort of way. That our equity audit there were four areas that we found troublesome and one

002was the difference in academic achievement between boys and girls, the disabled versus non poverty and we also really decided [music] to work on attendance and discipline. One of the best things we did was really focus on inclusive education, ensuring that our teachers had the skills and the knowledge that they needed. Our board has has developed five strategies to measure our success [music] and they're all kind of geared around engagement everywhere from relationships, authentic true trusting relationships, instructional quality, inclusion and belonging, wellness, and collaboration. If we continue to measure those things and track our own progress, I think we'll be successful. One of the things I'm particularly pleased about is our discipline rates have gone down a lot over the last four years. So, kids are finding more success. They feel more belonging. Our attendance rate

003has gone up. Our achievement levels have gone up. But more than that, kids are smiling and happy and enjoying school and doing robotics and working in the garden. >> One of the things that I've realized being a schoolboard director, it's not just teachers, it's not just the principal or the superintendent. It's people in our community willing to invest [music] into the students. And I think that's a huge part of the future. People realizing stuff that it is a teamwork. It is a group effort. I was thinking the other day, I made a [music] list of all the partners that we work with and it's long. It we have the boat school, we have the community wellness project, a AAW, Jefferson Land Trust. They're all helping this [music] community be engaged. One of the things I

004think is really special about our school board is like all five of us are different types of people and it's really amazing that we come from all walks of life and we can just sit down and work on the school board together as a group and we all speak as a whole. I think it really just boils down to going [music] back to our core values, deep roots and broad horizons and giving our students that foundation to where they can excel and soar away from the school was [music] our our main goals and all of that. We try to take that feeling and that goal and intention to everything that we do. And [music] I hope that that intention setting helps all of the members remind themselves of why we're here and what we're doing.
