going to be a concert band competition that takes place throughout the spring competing what the rules all across the country and it's not only an incredible opportunity for a band to prepare for higher level competition but also to kind of get a taste of what schools from around the country are doing and to see how we kind of add up to them and um this will teach other students discipline Focus teamwork sense of community and performance commitment responsibility being held to a higher standard for Academia and behavior preparation mechanic and of course more Mastery of individuals as well as Ensemble Mastery for performance now in the past Mr Danielson has competed in this competition with the high school ensembles on five different locations starting back in 2004. this is a top-notch quality run competition with

collegiate my dedicators who get many master classes for their Ensemble after our performance and I just like to mention that this is something that would be a very just an amazing opportunity for our Band program and for all of you students it would give us travel opportunities and kind of a password maybe a career have the music so the company that we would be going through is Four Seasons tours and Mrs Danielson has worked with them every time she's gone to this trip and they have provided a really good experience for the students everyone involved this company will book everything from the flight hotel Transportation food meals and the competition and the other activities one of which includes a trip to the Kennedy Space Center Where Mrs Danielson and her students once witnessed a space

shuttle launch just really cool and I thought totally awesome this is a thing that will be fishing every student's memory for first place trophies and a superstar award which if you have been in the Band Room you'll see the whole shelf where we have uh we currently have a large chunk of money in our ASP account we'll be heavily fundraising uh for the next year uh giving all the students an opportunity to attend um as well as seeing the expectation of participation um to raise most if not all of the funds to participate in this trip the money we currently have is also there to help students on free and reduced um the pre-introduced plan to supplement the rest if needed uh roughly 40 students and five chaperones plus a sustainable tent will be fully

dedicated to make this trip a success yeah so some of the fundraisers we're planning on doing is selling at football games and made it plan on doing age Jazz night with an auction um aluminum aluminum can drive poinsettias during winter spring baskets and also full performances at record and music camp during the summer yeah to elaborate on some of those at the music camp would be like band camp which we did in the past where Covenant happened oh and this is something that we used to do almost every year but because of covet we didn't get the opportunity and so we are just really really ecstatic to have this opportunity and to be able to get Pros thank you for your presentation it was excellently done I'd like to Echo every are going to try

to do this again because it is etched in their minds for the rest of their lives I would like to move that we approved the van trips for each of students to Florida discussion I do have some discussion in that um I can give High Praise to the program and to Mrs Danielson and the way that she manages the students I think of her five trips I've been on at least four of them and I'm super excited that the students are finding creative ways to support this and to support other students particularly those with financial need and I love the idea of music camp and I hope we can invite I'd like to come Pat all those in favor signify by saying aye opposed motion Perry you're gone and the next item is EHS Schools

basketball trip to Arizona uh I'm Ella gendro I'm Sarah Smith all right and we're all seniors that are trying to get a trip approved to go to Arizona that's coming winter break uh so we're budgeting that it'll cost roughly 13 000 and we have just under 13 000 but we're still doing fundraising and we're like right there uh um it will be 10 of our Varsity players and then the two coaches and more all stay in an Airbnb uh we have more upcoming fundraisers and we have done like the stands at football game or basketball games and like over mayonnaise kids camps getting ready to prepare uh we've been fundraising to go to a camp or to like a tournament away in a different state because um in the tournament there's going to be multiple

schools multiple private schools where they're in the same league or caliber of so it's going to be it's still going to be a stiff competition but it'll be good for our girls getting more experience yeah there's four games and then also some type of we'll do some type of activity that's like for the geographic around it or like uh the history of the area so and it would be from December 26th to the 31st yeah that's it thank you thank you ladies that was great it was good information do I have a motion to approve motion to prove the girls basketball teams a second so then seconded discussions I only have just one little question that is like regarding legality of Airbnb and students instead of traditional lodging I would just be able to look

after what we could commend the motion to pending like legal approval um because I know there's a different safety requirements in Airbnb regarding standard s can we just a question have we ever experience to Airbnb is that something that um they recommend that we seek regular standard lodging where there's security cameras and all sorts of things okay does that mean one caveat would be without the Airbnb I'm more than happy to fully agree so I'm asking for an amended notion so you can say yes or no yes all right you have a motion that has been made and has been amended to um into risk management um preparing uh more secure type houses can I make a clarification if risk management does approve it then you're okay yeah with approval of risk management approval of

risk management yeah yeah okay I was like all those in favor signified by saying aye opposed motion Perry good job ladies thank you and those of you who did presentations and Mr Crow or if you would like to leave you're more than welcome to do so at this point in time but you're also welcome to stay welcome to stay two goodbye but you can go if you'd like all right uh we have uh we have to vote on the other item we pulled it from yeah yeah okay we took it off okay all right then uh we will move on now to the consent agenda so I hear a motion to approve second seconded any discussion hearing none of those in favor signified by saying aye opposed motion Theory right um we will now move

on to hearings of individuals and groups so we will start with Jessica Marsh es good evening my name is I'm sorry pardon me um in order to let me read my statement okay sorry I completely I've never done this before I think I didn't either in order to encourage participation while maintaining professionalism and respect during our business needs we ask that you sign in which you have prior to the start of the meeting on the sheet provided and print your name and other pertinent information and if you'd like an agenda item and an item considered for future agenda please contact the superintendent or board chair five different states for actual meeting and there will be a three three minute time limit on your presentations okay all right go ahead Jessica all right thank you all

right so good evening my name is Jessica Morris and the helterated they'll address the fact that I was directed to put a pause on my teaching of sex ed this semester I want to clarify a few things I've been teaching in Needville for 26 years for the vast majority of that time I've taught Health which includes sexual health education this is the first time that I've been directed to stop teaching this year like every year I had a parent preview meeting so parents could view the curriculum and is if they choose they could opt out their child this meeting happened back in October because I teach two semesters of health and the preview meeting needs to take place at least 30 days prior to teaching the material I didn't require parents to come to the

meeting in order to opt out opt-out forms were available in the school office and sent home as an email attachment every parent and student at the middle school was emailed about the parent creating I taught six Ed the first semester without any issues a couple of weeks ago I sent out another email to my second semester classes and parents I thought it would be a good idea to remind them this unit was coming up since it had been so long since they were first notified I invited anyone to come into the office and look at the curriculum if they didn't get a chance to come to the original preview I left the binder in the office so anyone could take a look at it if they wanted to see it again opt-out forms were in

the office and I mailed the form home as an attached female to form home as an attachment I followed the law and the district policy to the letter I have never tried to talk anyone out of opting their child out of this unit I have never infringed on anyone's parental rights sex ed and HIV AIDS education are required by law it disappoints me that I was asked to pause this because of a few people complaining on social media and also because people can opt their child out um this wasn't an issue for 26 years and I don't understand why I suddenly become a problem now I do want to add one thing about um about that flash wasn't board approved at the time we were getting using a different curriculum when I first started here

in the mid 90s and it was recommended that we switched flash because the curriculum we're using eventually became out of date because of the advances in HIV and AIDS research um and so the curriculum we were using at the time wasn't on the list for medical accuracy anymore and Flash was so our District administration at that time approved this switch and they considered it a supplemental curriculum so they told me that we didn't need to get it approved by the school where we didn't need to go through the regular adoption process um I had to understand that the current Administration does not view that this way but it's not fair to change the rules when in May when we're almost done with the school year is an equity issue students who have had helped second

semester or who have health second semester are not getting the same education that's equal to the students that had Health First and needs to be corrected so thank you thank you okay all right semito good evening score Members First I would like to thank you and I want to commend you for your rapid response when dealing with the graphics and pictures and the dildo that were presented in front of children in the eighth grade health class thank you board members and thank you Lucy for taking this seriously and getting EMS sex education instruction halted immediately until you conducted further investigation thank you to those board members who reached out to me personally tonight I'd like to talk with you briefly about three things number one I think we need an opt-in policy versus an opt

out policy for sensitive subjects and instructions throughout our school district we do it for movies we do it for walking field trips it can't be that hard the opt-out policy for sex ed isn't working as a school district was not transparent about everything that would be included in the sex ed curriculum presented to the 8th graders apparently this is also presented to ninth graders so I'm willing to that we have some ninth grade parents that don't know that this is part of the curriculum for their students how you choose to handle the distribution of an opt-in form is up to you however I recommend doing it like you do all of the paperwork that has to be signed at the beginning of a school year and the sports registrations it's all done electronically number two

I think you need to create a policy that covers supplemental materials supplemental materials need to be approved through the same process as a core instructional material therefore there needs to be disciplinary action oh I'm sorry additionally there needs to be disciplinary actions stated within that policy for violation of that policy and only then can you ensure adherence this keeps things in mind with the other school district policies that we have on board and as well as Union requirements number three in order to put piloted material in front of students to see if teachers would like to consider the curriculum I believe the piloted materials need to go in front of the instructional materials Review Committee first before they are piloted and put in front of our children this is important because once materials are seen

they cannot be unseen and as it stands now it really doesn't matter if the committee approves them or disapproves them after a pilot program because the materials have already been presented in use in the classrooms um I think this system is broken I think that is to be corrected so in brief what I'm saying is piloted programs need to be presented to instructional materials for your committee for approval of the pilot materials can then be piloted if they are approved among signal piloted teachers can bring their recommendation to the instructional materials Review Committee for adoption if their committee approves it then the board can choose to approve or disapprove those materials for adoption for the entire school district and it only requires one more instructional material review committee meeting and that would make it two

per year I think we can do that so in closing I'm presenting and I'm just reflecting three things I would like an opt-in policy instead of opt out I would like the policy concerning the use of supplemental materials and I would like piloted programs um to need the instructional materials Review Committee approval prior to being piloted in front of our students thank you with uh the Indiana Burlingame my topic is on parental rights on April 23 2023 the Washington State Legislature has Senate field 5539 of titles 40 News young adults seeking protected health care services are gender affirming care or reproductive Health Services for minors referring to community blockers transgender surgery or abortion these are very these are permanent serious life-changing procedures Senate Bill 5599 was designed to exempt certain homeless youth shelters and host

homes from parental notification requirements for the miners seeking or receiving these protected services the legislature intended to remove the barriers to such services or to promote them in my opinion the response to 55.99 has been referendum one-on-one for Parental notification the title is Washington parental notification requirements for homeless and runaway youth seeking gender-related or reproductive Health Care Services a referendum can overturn a bad law from the legislature in about signatures collected and representative 101.99 on the ballot for voters to accept or reject and will require multiplication and Signature Collection that we had this week thank you all right um Jill I'm sorry about that no we're good it's commonly mispronounced I'll take it all right thank you guys for letting me speak tonight um I don't think it's any secret that there has been a

loss of trust between a good majority of our community and our school system over the past couple of years we could blame the handling of covid which somebody already was in or out of our control we could uh believe it on the delayed start to the school year that upset a lot of people to get publicly lots of different things but that's not going to solve our problem the the problem with the trust issue is there and we have to figure out how to fix it I think we're running 11 this next year and we're gonna need votes and if we don't have trust in our community we won't get the votes that we need to pass the levy and what has happened traditionally in evil and in other districts is we run it it

fails and then the threats come out the threat said well we're going to cut this program or we're going to cut that program you better vote and then we get our way but when we run a levy a second time that costs money I believe I believe that's probably money we don't have because we are paying for two superintendents one who's no longer doing the job so I think that um you know we don't want to throw away any more money than we have to so so we need to work really hard to establish the trust back that we used to have in this community um and so I I really just want to encourage more transparency and I specifically want to encourage transparency with the sex education curriculum it is true that you can

come to a preview I attended a preview last not last October the October before and when I showed up there were three long tables set up and there's a binder on each you could go through the finder at your leisure I know darn good well not everything in that binder is taught there are certain things that are and certain things that are not why do I as a parent have to go through 100 or 200 pages and think I know what's being taught nobody should have to it should be separate separated out by grade levels specifically what is going to be taught show parents what the kids are going to be showing that's where the disconnect is that is when people get upset because all of a sudden surprise I didn't see that in the

binder because I didn't have three hours to look through the whole thing I've stood in the EMS office saw a couple of different parents come in and say I'd like to preview the curriculum they were handed a binder and a kid shot the binder was that thick they shouldn't have to do that this particular parent had a kid on his hip he's not going to stand there for hours in peruse that curriculum let's make it easy let's be transparent I'm not against teaching sex education at all because I know if there's something there that I don't want my kid to see yep I can opt them out but I shouldn't have to go on a wild use Chase to figure out exactly what's being taught so that being said well I think I've already kind

of given the solution I suggested that last year when we had the round table event down at Eagle Middle School and I kind of thought that would happen this year but it didn't and I certainly hope that once we get our curriculum figured out that it will happen because the whole mess of people being upset with the curriculum being upset with teachers being upset with admin doesn't have to happen and the solution is simple the schools are the heart of our community at times and we need to reestablish the trust and that relationship between us thank you thank you Jake Paul hi my name is Jake Paul um thank you for taking the time for hearing about all the parents out to say um so I'm here today to talk about sex and it's an

osci requirement um it's a gold standard in the state it's used in many parts of the United States also but it was developed here in Washington state of our peer districts around us use it uh it's been used in ESD for over six years plus so it shouldn't I'm confused by why the content would be a surprise because it's not only this year but it's been awkward to be reviewed looked at a quick Google search online you can find it on other District websites and they have it available to look at so it to me it's what I'm hearing Library even with Jill saying is make it transparent get it on the website like our peer districts around us uh and it has on the top and the bottom and opt out options great you

know let people opt out if they want um but not pull it from the kids and make it so that they can't get the support education before the end of the year we've got kids that are not indeed that haven't gotten the training yet let alone ahead they didn't make it through all the kids that were so this seems weird that I'm kind of used by the deposit at this time it I know that uh was there and it was very aware of the Flash and Bill that was passed in the state um and that board was aware of it were involved in campaigning for or against it so it shouldn't be a surprise then that there's content in there um and so I would like it if we didn't pause things and would respondus

has already been reviewed and a few of the concerns but not overreacting it needs to be thank you Rick that's it hey everybody I'm Rick Rosser sir address you guys on the board at the same time no I'm just trying to keep my the sun's right in my face I can't see so anyway like I always do even though I haven't been like super in love with all this decisions you guys have been making lately I still want to get everybody to give you a round of applause just to say thank you guys Community Services so much time thank you for doing that job there whatever it was called I didn't get a go I was in and out of town a lot I hope it happens again and maybe more notice next time from

what I heard I don't know if there's like a bulletin board that can still be posted on for local employers or whatever maybe some somebody could help me in on that either thank you for doing the survey I didn't really care for it but I've been asking for it for a long time and I definitely appreciate that you guys have started in that direction I think the questions needed a lot of work um it was really the only question I felt like actually anything else and it's like everybody probably just spilled their guts in the service because everything else is just like generic do you like to eat yes or no kind of stuff I hope all of us love you so thank you for doing the survey this this debacle with the sex head

thing that's going on right now I agree that we need an opt-in that does I remember it being that way not very long ago when I was um middle school or whatever it just makes sense and if if we need more expanded curriculum for people that want to learn more details about dildos and sex toys and weird stuff then maybe you can offer like an extra class that they can even opt in again before I don't know I think just a real basic curriculum like get it down to the very basic if you're not going to do an opt-in that needs to happen I thought that would probably help us you know the nice thing about going last is I can expand on like Jill's comments that I trust um communication is huge and if

maybe we've created some how-to guides to give parents how to review curriculum not only success but all equipments if these guides were given out just to anyone can enrolled their kid here's your how-to guide here's how to file a complaint against your principal or teacher or whatever lay it out you know um welcome to the district of Mr Browder I'm out of time I'd love to keep talking I have some things to say I hope you can sit all the principles and teachers back tell them like this is a small town please help us keep it that way it's not Seattle thank you all right thank you all for your comments appreciate it um well I can report some presentations perspective for um our monthly payroll expenses are running with us just a little over

two million dollars a month um we're two-thirds of the way through the school year and we've met about two-thirds of the way in our revenues and expenditures goal um just working on preparing the budget for next year about it right can I say something about Krista for a minute I was at a conference on this last weekend uh with several colleagues and um they were talking about the debacle that they're in with some of their Federal programs because of their accounting practices and so of course I immediately texted kristens and tell me what's going on in Eatonville School District around these programs to which she said we're all clear we have no problems and I was just so grateful so thank you Krista for keeping us thank you financially solvent and doing the right thing

and avoiding some of those big Federal issues appreciate that thank you all right we have no unfinished business so we'll go on to new business and the first item is to consider approval of wiaa membership renewal salute any discussion oh what's in favor signify by saying aye opposed okay next is to consider the approval of the donation from the evil Lions Club is somebody going to speak I don't think there's anybody the Lions came to the school district after their casino night fundraiser and it was so successful um that they added on a bake sale and the alliance Club itself matched the bake sale part and they raised three thousand dollars and that three thousand dollars is being donated to the school district if you accept it to pay down um lunch charges for kids

that are having some struggles with paying for lunch it was very very generous and wonderful donation I move that we accept the donation from the Lions Club of their deepest gratitude thank you all right um time and time again the Lions Club and other communities um organizations have stepped up and we're just so grateful and that's part of what makes you built us a tremendous place to raise children so thank you to them for all the academic support and this is a huge help for students I'll be able to think that we have for their lunches or maybe they're not in the free and reduced program but they they're struggling too and uh you know we don't want them to go about that much so great appreciate it very very much so also some papers

thinking about by saying aye opposed motion carries consider approval of an HVAC system or okay there are three bits your pack a portable app warehouser so we can use it for classroom next year it is okay do I hear a motion to approve I moved okay seconded to approve the purchase of an HVAC system for one of those um any discussion hearing none of those favorite thing about it by saying aye opposed motion Perry all right we're going to consider policy now adoption of policies um do you want to take these individually I'm good to take them all because my work study where we had the opportunity to ask questions of unless there's others in the board that would like Partners hiding here yes okay well let's take the first two yes all right so

the first one is um stability in the workplace and the second one is Staff expression their policy 5161 and 5254. do I hear a motion to approve d Luke and seconded uh any discussion on any questions like I said we did have a work study where we went over them in public work studies all right all those in favor signify by saying aye opposed period and then we will hear from our nurse on the um opium related overdose so thank you for having me I'm Heidi balcady I'm one of the two nurses in our district um so as everybody's probably heard in our area our County and our community we have an increased rate of good use and overdose um Washington State's currently the second leading uh Pro can be visited for resources that's a

speedy 1.8 in the last year um we in 2019 Washington State Legislative passed Senate building degree which says that any school district that has enrollment numbers over 2000 are required to have Narcan which is an opioid reversal medication on hand um we are sitting at currently I believe Vista 20 1953 is there a typical enrollment number so we're kind of right on the cusp of that um so um a little background information on Narcan it reduces or uh excuse me it reverses the effects of an open related overdose it is a nasal spray it doesn't require an injection it's not invasive it will not hurt the student if they are not having an opioid overdose um and I am trying to get board approval to bring this into our Middle School in our high school

um there's a policy that I put together and I'm not sure it was that attached yeah perfect um the way we were hoping to roll it out is bringing into our Middle School in our high school um we would annually train two staff members which um in our thought process do you see we would have to get a little bit creative with that but if we are two administrators um it would be housed it yeah it has to be in an unlocked well-marked cabinet so we could find a place in each building for that and then they would be trained or they would be the only ones that would be well the administrators changed that by myself would be the only ones that would be administering that medication so we went into the teacher staff

anything like that and then the training would involve what we're looking for your requests as well so we would like to roll that out at our middle and our high school level and then I'm going to begin you know expand from that if we felt we needed to down the road um It's relatively inexpensive I was just talking to Kurt Hines um we can get it for our district it comes in a two pack um because a lot of times you have to repeat a dose and that you have kids running about 110 dollars that is with the standing order that Washington State put out uh we can we can get it from purpley they are that has been approved to be sold over the counter but we're not exactly sure when that's going to

be so with our three buildings and we're looking at full package to start the program how long does it take before it expires usually well I just ordered some and it's good through January 25 so usually I would guess probably here and I know there are programs um that families can order and have it in their homes for free sponsored by Pearson King County we aren't able to also so the programs that I have found there's a caveat to those that you cannot be a business owner very personal and that applies to schools as well oops and I've talked to so uh South Pierce guy and rescue does carry it on their fire trucks um Eatonville police hasn't been their police station and they are trying to they're in the process of getting it into

all their officer stands uh and we've talked a great length that they set in on one of our cabinet meetings you know police did to try and see if they had any other suggestions of how we could get it inexpensive and they really just don't because of the fact that we're a business is yeah it's it's compared to somebody's life it's not expensive I was just curious if we could you know yes and I mean and I don't know you know with it rolling out over the counter there may be other avenues that open up but as of right now I haven't found out it's down the road you know I can't speak to what will happen so I'm going to answer the question that probably everybody else is thinking can someone donate it I

I can't almost I don't honestly know the answers that I'd have to look into it for excited appreciate it yeah yes my question is more back to the standing order and even if it's over the counter we can't just give students over-the-counter medications um do we have like a physician oversight uh providing medical Direction similar to how Fire EMS all paramedics at a medical director who gives standing orders like where are our standing orders coming from or is the RCW covered I believe the RCW covers to include Administration with two parents minus I believe so I will verify that but I believe I think it does just want to make sure that it's not just in public but also covers us as a business and a school and to minors the forward and you've checked

with risk people on this obviously it must have school's over 2 000. it's approved their check they're checking on it okay okay I would make the motion conditionally to be in a professor's manager okay I'll second that motion motion has been made to approve um the adoption and policy 3424 for operate related overdoses um the caveat the risk management for our district would have to approve um all those papers and dogs all those in favor signify by saying aye opposed motion carry so thank you Heidi for taking us all right we are on to superintendent comments um I also want to say that we had an audit review today and these are the things that were said about our wonderful business manager we appreciate the additional time and effort the district's spent to prepare and

assist with the audit we specifically want to thank Krista hersing Director of Business Services for her positive attitude and collaboration approach to the audit process we came through the audit with flying colors so I'll give her another yeah yeah the auditor sat in our office two and a half months it has its own little mask and then they turn around and Bill us he didn't know to do an audit so um I did want to show you the surface of the new pool deck I took the choices around the cafeteria and let the kids vote so this is going to be pretty exciting to have this new finish on our pool deck so I can pass that around um I just want to make sure to everyone that you are invited to all the spring

concerts um we have some wonderful programs that happen in our schools Every Spring abandoned music um we also have graduations you're all welcome to come to those and we have a retirement celebration for three wonderful employees in our school district so you know join us and have a little fun Dylan or panics so the first thing I want to talk about is this track because there's some really cutting stuff coming up um this week is the biggest state and we have 16 kids going to sleep uh which is bigger than we passed last year um so that's really exciting uh two kids on the track team almost broke school records as well and one still has the chance to at State potentially so that's really exciting and both of them are a freshman and a

sophomore so they'll have a lot of practice um and then also what we have ways took fourth at districts and girls surface so yeah that's what I really wanted to talk about you um so kind of going off of what Hannah was saying uh the the track team has done a very role this season uh like you said maybe by the bar athletes are going to the accent I just kind of wanted to talk about some of the other uh Sports and players on those teams um there was we had an assembly it was a sports recognition assembly with uh Temple and she talked about all the athletes that either got first team all League second Team all week for for honorable mentioned which I'd say that's pretty awesome especially with uh Swanson with that

being said we had uh just a name to also stop I said Peyton handling was second Team all before baseball at the future and outfielder Bailey Anderson was first team all league in tennis and she also finished third in districts which is pretty amazing um yep so that was a sports part of it um I just want to talk about the job fair a little bit also there was many many kids that went to the doctor uh a lot of the kids was kind of skeptical about it almost there gotten into the comments and we were actually walking around it and uh visiting they were able to find lots of information that they wouldn't have usually been able to get a hold of um and so they were able to think about careers that they
