All right, we are live for our board meeting on Monday, May 18th, 2026 for Columbia School District. >> Would you lead us in the pledge? Oh, >> sure. I aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all >> faith, good news. So, two pieces of good news. First, um I want to say congratulations to Columbia Elementary School. I don't know if you've heard we've sent it on parent squared also on Facebook but they were officially recognized for by the Washington state board of education for closing the gap. This is based on achievement uh scores and work uh that's been done uh within the 24 I'm sorry 20 2425 school year. So it's for last year's
stuff they awarded this year. Um and a reminder because I've talked to you about this about a year ago. um Washington State, they only hand out roughly 16% of schools across the state uh are recognized for their work in several different categories. But the big picture going back is now that all three of our schools have been recognized just over the last two years. Um last year the high schools recognized for their special education growth uh there and the middle school also got the closing the gap and so this year the our elementary school was recognized. So all three of our schools have been recognized by the state board of education over the last two years which is pretty incredible work. Um it's obviously a lot of hard work from our students uh staff and
a lot of intentionality um on the academic side even though you know we talk about the behavior stuff but we are making some gains on that side and so for the state to recognize that I just want to really give uh our students and staff there just a lot of kudos and credit for the work they've been doing. So awesome. stuff. We'll have another banner to hang here in our district. So, send us the big banners and we'll receive that later this month. So, any questions on that just signs of the work being done. So, we're appreciative of that. Second is good news is um I'm it's good news but bittersweet because we are entering the last board meeting for our board reps and I want to thank uh specifically like AI the images I
got our three board reps um for the work that they've done. It's been a lot of fun working with this group this year. Um and I'm very appreciative of all the stuff they've done. Um, and I say this honestly, I appreciate when they challenge me and ask me questions and and the things that they're excited and eager about. Um, it's been nice, uh, having a voice at the table from the students and I appreciate their efforts and their work this year. So, we've got some cake that, uh, Mia will help to celebrate the evening. Um, but just want to say thank you for all your hard work and dedication to on behalf of our district. So, thank you for all you've done. Thank you. And good job. >> Good group for sure. Good job. >>
So, are we gonna pause or >> Let's just keep going. >> She'll work on that while we get this done. >> Board operating principal review decision- making uh identification and evaluation of alternatives and awareness of short and long-term consequences and appreciation for the needs of the group as well as individuals. and sensitivity toward collective action are essential to the decision-making process. Board and staff, in order to formulate and execute sound decisions, we agree to resolve problems at the lowest level possible. Clearly communicate decisions, build into each decision a point of re-evaluation, provide for input from all impacted by the decision, and use a decision making style appropriate to the situation. any changes or additions? >> We have one addition I'm going to ask and I've got it written within the PowerPoint. We're going to add
a 6.6 which is a custom energy contract. And when we get to that, I'll I'll go into the explanation of what we're doing, why we're doing that, but you'll see on the consent I've got it listed under there. Um or it's a contract I'm seeking approval tonight of $88,162. Reminder, 100% of this is OSBI grant funded. So there's no district uh general fund dollars working towards this. This is all uh been grant funded. So it's more of a pass through. Okay. So consent agenda looks like six items. Entertain a motion. >> We want to get some told. >> We'll pass some kick out while you get that ready. the office of superintendent of public. >> I'm gonna put you on speaker. >> Yeah. >> Public schools in the state. >> Okay. Uh consent agenda. We
have six items. I'd entertain a motion. >> I'll make a motion we accept the consent agenda presented. >> First from I'll second it. >> Any discussion? Did you have anything further you wanted to add on the >> So, I just wanted to bring some light to the custom energy contract. This is something I mentioned recently. We put a grant in. It's for indoor air quality. This is part of a two-part piece that we're doing for the Washington State Clean Buildings Energy Act with some requirements we have to fit underneath some energy guidelines and pieces. As part of that, we put in a grant and received this grant um that will basically be a tag along. In addition to so in other words, we're going to take what we were normally going to do with a
previous grant with that and do a more thorough u examination with the additional dollars for indoor air quality because that piece will will talk about ventilation, air in, air out, all that stuff. So, um we're excited to do the additional work, but because it's at 88,000, it does require board approval, but know that we're not pulling this out of any of the coffers. Uh it's 100% grant funded, and it's something that's kind of new to us. We're going to try and see >> further discussion. >> Haley, you good? >> I'm good. >> All in favor? >> I unanimous. >> Do we have any other action? Does DTE do we got to take action on this? So, let's move that. Let's move that up. >> Okay. So, I'm going to move forward to our last actionable
item, >> which is Thank you, Brad, for bringing that up. Last month, we had um our CTE director here doing our administrative report. Uh so Key Gant uh she went over our C yearly CTE piece and she also gave to you our district four four-year CTE plan. We need approval on that so we could submit that to the state that was covered last month. It was in your materials. >> Entertain a motion. >> I'll make a motion that we accept the CTE four-year plan that was presented. I'll accept it or I'll second it. >> Okay. Any further discussion? Anything else? Right. All in favor? >> I unanimous. >> Thank you, >> Haley. Thank you. >> All right. Thank you. >> Bye. >> Hey, student reps or uh visitors. >> Any visitors? Seeing none. >> Reps.
So I'm gonna pass this on to Oscar if you want to say anything before I get started. Um so I had well we had partnered with the broadcasting team and when we partnered with the broadcasting team I wanted to show why uh the broadcasting is important and how it benefits students in exploring CT careers with the broadcasting. So, I gave Miss Clayton u a prompt and when I gave Miss Clayton the prompt, I thought she was going to interpret the prompt and then give it to the student. And in the prompt, I basically just asked um uh could you show us like the backgrounds of broadcasting and why this is so important for the students, how this benefits the students, and what the students plan to explore in the future with broadcasting. And I mean,
I didn't mind, but instead of interpreting it herself, she gave it directly to the eighth graders. And I thought that was a very good idea. And the eighth graders took the prompt and they created this film. And uh basically interpreted some of my big words. And this is what they came up with. And I thought it was very creative and I liked the results. I'm going to expand on one thing Oscar said because you're um not right now, but you're going to hear me over the next two years talk to you a little bit more about CTE and our middle school level. Um, as we begin expanding CTE and getting some of those courses down into our middle school, we have the ability now, um, but this is some of the work key talked to
you about last month, writing additional frameworks and getting approved at the middle school level. Um, it won't help creditwise on things, but with the different pieces and frameworks, it will provide us an opportunity for enhanced CTE funding. So there's a funding um mechanism for that that would help at the middle school level and also bring a different level of some of that content down lower that would follow through with the high school. So you're starting some of that and we'll use like the broadcasting and as that stuff works its way like through the business pieces as we're thinking about through like the engineering and some of those pieces through the STEM piece how that would work its way through the high school and those pieces. So we're trying to build some connections between there. Um
and this is um again what Oscar is doing, but you're going to hear me talking a little bit more to you about this over the next couple years, how we expand this. It's a it's not a quick process because it requires additional certifications and licenses that people are going to be working on behind the scenes to obtain. Okay. Sorry, I'm just gonna turn the volume up here. Oscar, I'll make sure they can hear it. The last day of class was a maternity. Attention all students. Make sure to check out the signup sheet in the office. Sign your first and last name. >> I know. >> Yeah. Me first. You promise that even if we both don't get into broadcasting, we still be friends. Okay, promise. >> That's how you get into broadcasting. I suggest you
do so. Just think about having such a fun class at the end of the day. >> It really helps you get through school. >> Yeah. To be honest, broadcasting teaches us so much, >> such as working as a team, being responsible, and meeting deadlines. >> Let's see what the other kids have to say. >> Yeah, let's go. taught me how important it is to have obligations in >> and it taught me how to work in a group. >> Broadcasting taught me how to mix groups and it taught me how to edit. >> You can be filming a video like this next year. So, if you want to make fun videos for broadcast, make sure you sign up. Thanks for watching. See you later. >> Um, I mean them interpreting the prompt on its own is
an example of them thinking critically, which is what we want our students to do. >> Okay, for our board reps. Um yeah, so sorry I eating um so um as you guys know is obviously going to make it to state and it's a two-hour trip and obviously I know there's money that goes into it but I think that they deserve a like somewhere to sleep hotel so they don't have to keep making the trip back and forth. Um because track meets are all day. They' have to leave super early and then come back who knows how late. And so and a lot of the people that are going to stay are seniors and our senior trip is the week of track state. So they wouldn't be able to go with us. Um which is a
bummer because I know a lot of people want to go or like theers and MIA. They want to go but they can't because they're going to state. So something to think about. I know that there's money that goes into it, but I don't know. >> Who else have you talked to about it? >> As student board representatives, like our job is to advocate and speak for the students. And I've spoken to at least three of the track field members and they feel like they're very underminded. And um when other teams make it to state, they get hotels and um they've never gotten to stay at a hotel and they think it's a very good experience to stay in Yakama for a few days and explore. >> I think what Has anyone talked to anyone down
at the school about that? >> Athletic director, principal, superintendent. There's kind of a >> a chain >> chain that happens. And I don't know if there's reasons why, you know. I'm Yeah. So, >> it just didn't feel like it was a long enough drive >> for the athletes to stay over there. But, I mean, um, is D1 and I think staying in a hotel could increase the performance. a good night's well rest. >> I think you got an advocate right there that we'll look into it and >> I'll take a look at him back. So, find out more heads up. >> I have a piece of positive news. We handed out your books today. >> Oh, and it was super fun. I had a good That's why you don't skip school, Faith. >> I didn't
skip school. I was at Wait, no, isn't it? Um, it was really fun. I got a lot of signatures. The cover looks so cute. Um, really sad. McKenna Crayons, this is she's a senior. She's graduating. She's kind of been like head of the yearbook the last couple years. So, I'm very sad to leave have her leave next year, but I'm already excited for next year. I think of I swear the like when I turned in my last page, I had eight new ideas for pages and I didn't get to do any of them. So, I'm excited. I have one more year. But that was super fun. It was college signing days. >> College signing day. >> A representative from each of our schools will be coming to represent us. >> All right. Thank you very
much. Appreciate you guys all the time and want to pass it off for our enrollment budget status. >> Um so budget status will the same last time. We're only up to December. However, um the cash flow in your packet was updated through April with the state revenue that we received. >> So, the system is still down or something or what's the scenario? Yeah, they're still transitioning to this new system and working out >> playing catchup. We're behind at stuff. We're just getting it late. >> Right. >> Got it. >> Enment your average 7:43. and budget status for general fund. This is as of December general fund is 2 million project service 95,000 ASP,000 vehicle. We will have enough money to purchase that new bus that is coming in with August. I mentioned legislative how they're
going to adjust that transportation schedule. Um, and we do have enough coming in with that to cover money around. just barely but >> that's the intent. >> Any questions? So with our general fund balance for the estimate of August, >> even though we haven't received the funds, can you fairly accurately estimate what those funds will be when they >> um Yeah, because I mean the county we get obviously property tax and then there's a little bit of earning. Um so we can estimate pretty and they give us reports of how much we've received in property taxes, although they're not giving us their full reports. So, um I feel the cash flow is pretty close. >> Thank you. >> Okay, remember Okay, move on to reports and discussions. So, uh, quick update, middle school, gym, bathroom.
I want to just kind of I've talked a little bit about this, but you don't need to worry about all the writing. I'm just showing you, uh, this is actually one of a page out of one of the about a 36 page report in the in the construction piece, just showing you where it's going to be at. Um, you're familiar with that area. What what you're going to see eventually when this construction is done is that left overhang on the side that says women's on that side. That's going to be gone. That'll be taken out, removed. And you see kind of where there's a a door. It looks like there's going to be a new door. You're actually going to have two new doors coming out the front looking at you this way. So you'll
that hallway on the right hand side where you used to get in on the men's side will no longer be there. You'll access two doors uh right there. Um and uh it'll just be single stall bathrooms both uh for ADA compliance. You'll have a toilet and urinal and a sink on each side. Single you can lock behind it and brand new tiled everything ready to go. Be a nice new bathroom for our community there being next September. So want to show you this is the old layout there. You can see the top kind of walk you through where I talk you through a little bit. This is just currently as it sits. Again, used to get in here and then here. Again, that's going to be gone. So, showing you the old piece layout of
this. Now, I'm just going to show you the new blueprint so you can see it's all said and done. That's what it's supposed to look like. Swinging doors right there. >> Can you remind me, are we putting a hot water tank in there somewhere? There's not hot water in that bathroom, is there? >> We're working on that to get make sure we have the hot water attached to it. Um, one of the pieces that I'll that uh we'll be looking at is um that is the one piece that we've got to look at with the abatement issue to make sure the insulation around that those hot water pieces are >> where they need to be on that one. So, >> if we're going to do this, we need to get it compliant that way, too.
>> Yeah, >> we're looking at getting it hooked up to our current system, not adding new hot water tanks to it. >> Thank you. So right there, the quick updates would be we've hired Alliance Construction Management Solutions. Reminder, if you're with us eight years ago, that was the gentleman who helped us with the elementary activities wing, Earl Eastman. Um he's already soliciting uh construction vendors via our small works district roster that meets uh it's in accordance with policy 6220 and 6220P. We've already completed three on-site walkthroughs with the potential vendors on that. And uh Brad, as I was just jumping ahead right here, we're working with Apex to finalize our pre-construction paperwork. They're going to come in uh hopefully in the next week or so. They're going to do just some sample testing just to
make sure we're good because of the the date of that building, early 1950s. It has to do with the paint and the mastic behind the cove base, some of those pieces. Just make sure we're good. So, um, they have Apex, I learned through this, is formerly the PBS engineering company, and they're the group we've been working with since the early 19 the mid 1990s with Bruce Hawkins. So, they have all our history and all their paperwork on everything they've done and and know the hot spots and things like that. So, we'll be working with them. Uh, bids are due to Earl at Alliance Thursday of this week. And so I could potentially have news for you as early as Friday of this week what this uh would look like. Reminder again, this is grant funded.
$150,000 we received from OSPI grants to retrofit those two bathrooms. So again, it's great, but no general fund dollars will be spent on this construction at this point. Unless we go above and beyond for anything. >> Have they given us an estimated cost? Usually the engineer >> I have I have some estimated costs that would fit underneath the $150,000 from uh design west. They're anticipating roughly I'll give you rough cost somewhere in the $140,000 tentative construction schedule would be this summer. We'd love to We're trying to work the pre uh pre-construction paperwork, work through that as fast as we can because we're trying to literally get this going like a week after school starts to fit it in that three-month window. The things you'll see here would be over the summer, the the what I'll
call the south doors going outside the gym there, and we'll be kind of roping off. That'll be their work yard. Kind of that back parking area where you get in the back side of the gym. Whether we fence that off or what, that'll be their area they're working, but it's nice and easy to get to right there. >> So, questions on that? I just want to give you a quick update. You'll see we're going to be working fast and furious on this. >> Are there going to be plans to update the locker rooms, too, or are we like leaving these alone? >> This was only available because we didn't have ADA access in those bathrooms. So, the grant dollars that came along with this would only gave us the money to update those bathrooms. >>
We would have to run a capital levy or a bond to update those pieces >> basis. So, >> good question though. >> We're doing what we can with money that >> I understand >> doesn't come from our community as best we can. >> Yeah. >> When I was in middle school, there was like two urinals on the girls ones. >> Yeah. >> Okay. I'm gonna hand this over to Andrew for our tech report right here. See, this is his 17th edition apparently. >> 19 years in district, 17 giving this report. get started. I guess this is my first meeting since the tech levy. So I just wanted to take a moment support of the tech levy. All this would not be possible without again thanks to the community and then that kind of just segus
right into thanking my Jones with help around the district. This is he's completing his fifth year with us going to his sixth and been a huge help for us and uh really helps me monitor the internet filter keeping kids safe uh engages with the kids works with tech kids help staff and students and so just want to acknowledge his help been a huge benefit for the district as well and uh my next thanks is to uh the student texts and so I just wanted to highlight that program again um so again we touch on throughout the year uh PC mobile device troubleshooting. We work on those Chromebooks, lots of Chromebooks to repair, a little bit of network engineering. We look at web pages and some coding. And of course, we focus on a little bit
of cyber security and what to look for, what to watch out for in the world of that. This year we had uh junior Gage Wilson and senior of course is graduating this year. Been a huge help repairing Chromebooks. Going to miss her. And so I just wanted to again thank them for their help. And now uh the four main uh topics that we're going to be looking at encompass the year, Parent Square, Chromebook, student safety, and cyber security. So parent square was our uh big new thing for the year. This ties back into our district plan. And so we just wanted to increase communication uh with the district and out to parents. And so that was just kind of getting the uh the groundwork set for that, getting parents aware, getting the word out, getting
staff and administration involved. And we kind of wanted to see, well, how's how we wrapping up the year here? What does it look like? And so we wanted to find out, okay, is there at least one parent in a family unit that has gone in and fully verified their account. And we were very uh pleased back in that uh in that report. So we did very well at least having one parent verified. So it's someone in the household is getting the message. So >> can I stop there real quick? Yes. So you remember we talked about this very same question when we were dealing with our district goals for the year and I'd given you some preliminary numbers on what we were uh how we were for families across and then it was actually posed
at that time you know what about even someone just someone's connecting with that and I said I get you those updated numbers and so that's what you see. So nine out of 10 you know we're doing really great. So, I was I was actually shocked that we're that far along already. So, >> thank you, Andrew. >> Yeah, >> of course, in year two, we'll be seeing if we can close that gap, but we're doing pretty well with a 90% coverage across districts. So, then we're going to highlight some top authors of the district. How we got fifth five top authors in the district here. We've got Samantha Smith fifth place, Sandra Samurray fourth, Michelle Good third, Teganani second, and Tavis is number one in district. You may or not have gotten one or two messages
from him over the year. Uh he is our star communicator for the district. And again, year two, we're going to be focusing on student score. I pulled the numbers on how many students are verified. We had 80 so far. Uh we're going to continue that momentum into year two. uh continuing to focus on uh the sports and activities and groups and uh getting students signed up and using that piece of the software as well. >> Reminder, this will remove like the band app and those types of communications because that'll be controlled then under this filter. >> Uh then we move on to Chromebooks. Uh again, we're going to continue the one to one program going into uh the next school year. Again, K through 12, we uh student has access to a Chromebook throughout the
day, whether it's been issued to them or in a cart at the elementary. Again, we focus on making sure we have availability and inventory. Uh making sure that all kids have access uh repairs. Uh screens are our number one replacement. Uh a lot of screens get broken over the course of a year. And uh also, as we uh look to keep these Chromebooks going, we have to be aware of that refresh cycle, whether they're kind of falling apart as they age. but they also have an artificial expiration as well that the company places on the device that we have to also be aware of. And so we're very uh aware of that and planning for those uh so we don't fall off a digital cliff as they call it. Here's just a quick representation of
some we've worked on over the course of the year. So uh this is kind of our graveyard boneyard we pull parts and pieces from. So uh this year we didn't really have to order any brand new parts. We just kept pulling from our supplies. So again, as we uh bring new Chromebooks in, we can set the old Chromebooks aside and pull parts and pieces from those uh incident and damage report. This is kind of our last three years of reports that have come in. You can see that the middle school uh Chromebook uh have a little more attention. That's a special time in for for the kids. There's lots of bumps and things that happen and so those numbers are a little higher. you're going to see the uh the current year's numbers are a
little bit higher than that number got cut off there, but uh we got a new uh inventory uh incident report system for this school year. And uh the staff now have the ability to do their own tickets. So those numbers don't represent actual repairs. That could just be that they need a quick reset or a software uh fix or whatever. So they're a little bit higher this year, but uh we're really excited for the new ticket system. Student safety. This is an important thing. Uh every year uh we're using LineWise. This is our third year. This uh helps report uh the activity that's going on with students. Again, we focus on engagement, safety, and wellness. And uh they've got a five tiered system on what kind of alerts come through our uh system. Five being
the most severe, one being the least. Uh I'm happy to report we had no level fives this year. We did not have any level fives the previous year, but in the first year we That was a little bit rough. There was a lot going on. We definitely stop talk with administration and the kids and uh let them know that this is here and making sure that if any uh if we see anything, we're getting to that information out to the administration. So, we said we saw a little bit of a bump up uh for this year. We had a middle school project that focused on some hard times and they were doing some research on mental health and so it kind of spiked the numbers just a little bit as those came in. So, Again,
those notifications come to the tech department first and then we distribute those out either to the counselors, the principles or both to address those issues as they come across. Uh, also we brought online uh last year custodial. This is an at home parental controls uh part of a board meeting that occurred uh a couple of parents were looking for ways to monitor their students activity and so now we have 79 parents covering 140 140 students on that program. cyber security. This is an everyday battle. There's always a new attack. There's always something that the bad guys are trying to do. And so, uh, this is just staying up to date, communicating with other districts, uh, you know, trying to, uh, keep our data safe and protect everything. So, we're going to be looking at, uh,
as we move into the through the summer into next year, maybe assisting with some new software to help with that process. So again, part of that uh cyber security defense is with setting up multiffactor authentication with our staff. So much like your banks uh protects your information, we're also protecting staff information, staff accounts, student accounts. So uh our going into the year two of this, we're going to be focusing on service accounts and then outside access coming in. If a vendor needs access, we want to make sure they're multiffactored as well. So summer projects things coming up. We have ordered 250 Chromebooks to refresh and cycle out. So, those have arrived. We'll be looking to unbox, get those inventoried, and get those out across the district. Uh, we're working on our Windows 11 upgrade project
that's still ongoing, but almost complete with that. Again, cyber security is just a never- ending battle. So, like I said before, we're going to be looking at maybe uh different methods to to help uh trigger an early warning system to let me know what's going on if the bad guys are trying to get in. And uh then we have schooling. This is our kind of our little summer project as we go into the next school year. That's going to replace the current high school and beyond plan that we have. Uh it's the new state option. So, uh this will be ways for uh the staff and students to track their high school career and beyond they say. grant exploration or scholarship exploration I should say and um career opportunities as well. So we'll be learning
more about that as the summer progresses. >> Grad requirements all that stuff is going to be all unified in one system. The state's going to so that is about it. Any question? >> Well, thanks for all you do, but I appreciate the time and effort they put into it. All right, with that we are going to skip the we already did this. So CD plan's already been covered. So really we're down into the board calendar review. >> Board calendar review. >> Reminder, um we're going to be on the 5th Monday of June, not the 4th. So it's the 29th, uh not the 22nd. Um I will be not in district on the 22nd. So, um, so we'll be doing our administrative follow-up, our year-end followup. Um, administers will come back and share some of the
updated results we have for that. Obviously, budget enrollment. Any other suggestions you want? Let me know. We're tenatively looking at July for the budget hearing, right, Amber? Tenatively July. So, adopt our normal budget and um I know >> right here right. >> Okay. Sorry. Uh you just reminded me um with this piece bids are due. Thank you. I was going to talk about this on the calendar but I forgot to uh remind you of this piece with bids are due Thursday. Decisions uh will follow. I was supposed to mention we will need a board approval on that one. Hard part is our next board meeting is not until June 29th. We'd like to start construction June 15th. So the likelihood is because you're talking about roughly 50,000 project board approval to move forward on that.
So long story short, we might need to pull that together for a one single agenda item approval. So is there a day as you look in your calendar that you'd like to avoid or better for you? roughly what we looking at for so if we look at I'm going to go back to the calendar I had here thank you for that totally space that we would school's out on June 12th okay so if we have the information we need this Friday 22nd 22nd you have the following week the 25th 29th or the week of the 1st through the 5th week of the eth We're looking at we need to award it to someone, right? So they can begin planning and working on their stuff. >> I can do midweek. I can't do obviously Monday because
it's holiday and I'm out Friday.
