00119 area school board if you can join me and say the Pledge of Allegiance indivisible with liberty and justice for all yeah I'd like to call our meeting to order Toby would you do the roll call please Peter Turk here Barry schmaling here Susan Kessler here Taylor Wishaw Marlo Brown here Roseanne Han here and Mark Kevin Byrd sorry here thank you Taylor Wishaw asked me to share that he regrets he couldn't be here tonight he was had a close contact with somebody with colbit so I guess we're all appreciative that he's being cautious not passing on anything and hopefully he's okay um he's not sick he just had a close contact um next up on our agenda is citizen comments these are comments that are General matters so not something that would be an item
002for Action tonight and I have three comments tonight um you could Toby has a microphone so I'd ask you to uh take the microphone Tom Coleman you're up first you know the rules it's three minutes you've done this before again another meeting another month no agenda for helping 16 percent of the kids in our school district I have no idea why we feel like we just passed these 16 percent of the kids 500 kids in Burlington School District we just pass them through but yeah we're going to talk about early start college We're Not Gonna end moving on after school I mean do these kids not mean anything to you I mean release them and release the funds with them if you don't want to teach them I'm sure these kids would be happy to
003go elsewhere these kids want to learn how to read and do math I've talked in a number of them now I was shocked at how many kids that are very normal need extra assistance when I was in school it that lasted until about fifth grade I mean from kindergarten to fifth grade they taught you how to read whether you were behind or not I mean what's going on here in Burlington are you guys you know catered only to the special you know people that are in band people that are in sports I mean what about the kids that just need to learn how to read to maybe not be a burden on society in the future I mean we're spending pump we're spending seventeen thousand dollars for that kid to come here as taxpayers I
004mean the best school in Wisconsin is only eighteen thousand and you're receiving seventeen thousand dollars for these kids to come here but yeah you refuse to do anything for them my son has a has been in Reading intervention since school started do you know when that class is actually going to start tomorrow so he spent nine weeks sitting in that class doing absolutely nothing besides looking on his phone there hasn't been a teacher in there to teach them for nine weeks there was two other kids and they dropped the class two weeks ago he's the only one left and Chris finally has a teacher to teach the class nine weeks after school started I mean did we not think there's any kids that need this I mean because all the kids I talk to their
005biggest struggle is reading and that brings them down in math also because math isn't math anymore math is in numbers it's all story problems do you think we can put this on the agenda and maybe actually address these 16 of the school thank you oh thank you Tom next up is Laura bielefeld hello so I actually intended on thanking you guys this evening and I don't want to negate that I still want to thank the school board for some of the comments that were made at the last I don't know thank you um at the last school board meeting and the stance that I feel that some of you are being comfortable now um when we're talking about Equity um but in that Equity applies to all of our students um I personally don't know
006the individual who just spoke or um the demographic of students that he is talking about but I would say that that you know we talk Equity we're talking about that group of students as well so we need to be paying attention to where all of our students are at um and I hope that the district is looking into that and taking that matter seriously as well but with that I would also like to say thank you for the growth that I have seen within the district and some of the groups and um open honest discussion that I've seen happening um in some meetings so thank you for that um and hopefully we'll continue to see growth in the third and final General comment is from uh Maxine you know hello and I just wanted to
007turn back the clock uh to the last meeting where you had a math teacher that came up here that wanted to have an AP course included in the curriculum she was fabulous I'm going to tell you her she was her enthusiasm just spread throughout the whole room and if you could get 20 more like her to add to the community she's just I just want to say wonderful she's an asset to your community I just wanted to comment on I think I am we or something that program that's coming in that you that you want to put in into your curriculum if that is correct that the the title on the way over here there was on the news a man from Lion King Broadway that just lost his job as an interpreter for The
008Lion King do you know why his skin color he was the wrong color they fired him because of that and uh this this new program that you're bringing into the school year I I just feel it's CRT on steroids and why would you even consider a program what just tell me what the pluses are for this type of program the Chinese State media this is China they have a name for us over here baju baju as white liberals who only care about topics such as immigration minorities lgbtq and the environment who have no sense of real problems in the real world who only advocate for peace and Equity to satisfy their own feelings of moral superiority and who are so obsessed with political correctness that they tolerate backward Islamic values for the sake of multiculturalism
009now be careful what you wish for because when I looked at what this program has it has a lot of white privilege installed in it and what would happen eventually is that the majority of you on this board would be eliminated because of white privilege all for the exception of one be careful there is a policy that I would love to have implemented and it goes like this neither preferential nor disparaging treatment shall be applied to learning about any race and no student shall be taught that their skin color determines their ability to succeed that their race determines their moral character or that their race makes them responsible for past transgressions of their race moreover no student shall be taught that their social economics status or U.S citizenship status makes them Superior or inferior to
010others so please consider that thank you so much and have a great night okay I'll just I'll just say uh it was Mrs milky who was the teacher who came here last month I I agree and as many more of her well and I was my comment was going to be I think we have 20 more of her and I don't have some of them in the room right now so I think uh yeah but she's she's a Jen but I you know she's one of many here yeah um all right thank you so uh any board members have um information they want to present on workshops they've attended I do okay okay last weekend I spent Thursday Friday and Saturday at Stevens Point and it rained the whole time buckets and anyway but I
011made it there and I made it home so I was happy and the first part of the meetings were on school districts all around the state having trouble meeting their budgets and they talked a lot about referendums that are going to have to be floated in order to make it because the money just isn't coming from the federal and state government enough because of inflation and so forth also a lot was discussed with vouchers and how much it takes really away from the public school schools to pay for the voucher schools and somebody suggested that maybe in the tax in the tax bill they should put in how much of the taxes is going for a voucher schools I also talked a lot about the convention many wonderful things are going to be at the
012convention I hope all of us will go very very inspiring Speakers and Things that board members need to hear also there was something kind of exciting Burlington played a championship volleyball game for the high school and one of the men that was at our meeting belongs to wiaa and he said hey Roseanne you want to drive to Green Bay with me and it's an hour and a half from there just like it's an hour and a half from Burlington so I went got to sit up in the wa box oh is that exciting they they didn't win but I just it was such a demonstration of sportsmanship and how the girls all I don't know I just liked it and all the fans in Burlington were polite and I was very very proud of them
013and they were absolute winners and I just wanted to say I told um Michelle Bowen that I would tell remind all the board that Thursday is the feast day that we're all invited to that the pack house puts on at the little church and uh hopes that more that you'll let her know that you can go but anyways a good time was had by all and then on the last day uh Susan was there too we did the policy and resolution committee and these are things that we're going to send to our people that will talk to the legislators about doing good things for schools and so did you want to add anything to that no it was a good meeting and we and we talked out all the different policies and resolutions that we're
014going to bring up um yeah and those will be decided on at the delegate assembly in January so a very good meeting I learned a lot got to rub Elvis with a lot of school districts around the state and again I'm very proud of Burlington and all that we have and all we do so thank you yeah no thanks Rosanna Susan any other board members meetings or workshops okay hearing none uh Steve you want to give us a superintendent's report please sure there's a number of updates I just would like to quickly highlight and as we are now starting I think this is week 11 of the school year about two-thirds of the way through that uh first first semester run uh it's kind of pretty clear when you hear some of the amazing things
015going on and so I wanted to start with just a couple of examples of our amazing students some of which are are seated right here in front of us and the the first one is to just mention that Karcher middle school has been very very active uh in raising funds to sponsor veterans on an honor flight to Washington DC I think you might hear more about that I know they far exceeded their goal of I want to say 15 people that they've now honored so you're probably going to hear more about that in a little bit also looking out here and seeing some folks from BHS not to be outdone driven uh recently also hosted a dodgeball tournament and a silent auction where they raised over three thousand dollars to train therapy dogs to work
016with veterans with PTSD so again really nice demonstration of compassion from our students also to highlight a few wonderful relationships with our business partners in the community this last month alone we had 54 students that traveled to tour a variety of the Lynch dealerships and really look at what the future of employment looks like that is vast and varied just throughout their industry our principles of engineering class which is a pltw class you'll hear more about that later I think from Jill they toured gateway's imet Center and and for anybody who's not been there that I met Center ever seen it is definitely worth a trip just to check out the Innovation that's going on there so more on that later as well uh our dog continues to be a great partner they hosted a
017tour force in Burlington High School business classes and we've also had really just an endless number of volunteers who assisted with the Burlington High School reality Fair which is for juniors and that is really um kind of a Capstone experience for the financial literacy class so if you've not been able to see the the gym at the high school filled with all of these Community Partners supporting our kids it is really something special also just a quick note both Chris wines of our people Services Department Chris sitting right here and Dan bocock from buildings and grounds they've been collaborating working on our safety efforts for the district most recently working on our reunification plans and a couple of listening and Q and A sessions with parents in addition we have some age-appropriate presentations on emergency
018procedures that are now on our website and being talked about with students as well this is simply a life skill whether you're at grocery store or Mall a school at church whatever it may be you know these are things we want students to be aware of uh and soon all of our schools and students will be participating in drills and these drills as you know are around these concepts of run hide and fight and I say fight kind of in you know quotations because really it's not like physically fighting but the idea that you might push back in a certain situation so with that uh we're just gonna be practicing you know safety is right up there in our top priorities of making sure that our students feel safe when they're with us also just
019really an interesting one that some folks don't know us by state law our health services department does have to track the immunization rates and these are things like polio and hepatitis and the MMR series and so we in order to get sort of the clearance if you will from the state you have to re achieve 99 and I know that our health services team and our staff and our families were absolutely amazing getting to the 99.9 compliance so I literally think we are missing two families that we're still working with even though we've we've submitted that also last week we started Vision screenings and these are for students that are in 5K so kindergarten first third fifth and seventh grades and then starting uh in January will be our annual seal a smile which provides
020Dental sealants for elementary school students and then I would be remiss to not mention just a couple of amazing uh really fall athletic highlights uh all of our teams were amazing but as Roseanne mentioned girls volleyball had their ninth appearance at the state tournament this year they did end their season in the semi-final match losing to the eventual defending Champion Oconomowoc and so congratulations to girls volleyball and also to our football team who went deeper in the playoffs than they have in many years making it through the first two rounds before eventually losing in the third round and just congratulations to the 22 seniors that will be graduating from that team as well and of course we had uh here comes trouble so if you're a fan of our our music students in that program
021uh with pennyanke they performed at the Wisconsin music educators Association conference at the end of October that is always an honor and one that's really quite rare and then one that we're getting used to hearing about and that is our one act play heading to the state uh tournament so they'll be performing Little Women this Saturday actually and so if you don't have anything to do tomorrow we would invite you 7 p.m at Burlington High School our one act Little Women is going to perform and that there is no charge to attend that so anybody who wants to come on out and and see a great performance I also just want to congratulate uh what is soon to be our former girls tennis coach Rose delotowski she's familiar with a lot of you used to
022work for our health services department but Rose uh following 35 years is retiring from coaching and this past weekend was inducted into the Wisconsin High School tennis coaches association Hall of Fame so congratulations to Rose and with that we will be in the news with schools tomorrow with the release of the annual state report card and we'll be soon kicking off our United Way campaign in this month of giving as well and we all already heard about the pack house Feast but as a reminder no school on Wednesday that is a teacher in service day so two days from now that's it okay thank you Steve next on our agenda is a consent um agenda items which would include our approval board meeting minutes bank statement pain in the bank statements and the bills um
023or bank statement and paying the bills um the Personnel matters which our Personnel committee met earlier last week to discuss which would be appointments resignations retirements and terminations and donations to the district um I'd entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda items so moved second uh motions made in seconded any comments only comments I would make is the last two meetings I've asked that the donations be read out and the reason for that the district does a great job of recognizing our donors personally to the donors but I think it's really important for a public to understand just how much the parents the community groups and the businesses do to help support this District we don't really have a great way to do that we're looking into what we can do but it does
024consume time to read those off so we will not be reading them all off tonight but these are all publicly available take the time to go out and look at that recognize the people that have helped us out thank you yeah no thanks Barry any other comments engineering none I'll call for a vote all in favor say aye aye opposed nay all right you consent agenda passes tonight we have five items for information discussion um first is the school Improvement update from Karcher Middle School um we're excited to hear this hey first off thank you for having us today I have some friends here with me some staff some students and some of the family members so I'm really excited I appreciate all of them for being in attendance and they're going to kind of
025help me with this presentation so as they their parts come up I guess you could say they'll just come up to the front I'll hand them the mic they'll talk we did rehearse it a little bit today so um it shouldn't be anything too frightening and like I said I appreciate all the staff that did come for the dinner earlier it was really cool to see that so um this is I'm Nick Ryan I'm the principal at Karcher middle school for those of you that don't know me this presentation is around great place to learn great place to work in serving a great Community we are very fortunate at Karcher Middle School to have all of these things and in Burlington area school there so so our presentation kind of surrounds that this is our
026motto for the 2223 Karcher school year Positive Vibes only or pvos as we call them our staff says it all the time our students have really lived up to this um hype and right here is a medal of positivity that we actually travel around to different staff members each month they pass it along to one another and we'll kind of talk about that later in the presentation but that kind of sums up our our model for the year I first want to just touch base on some celebrations and some positive happenings from last year to 21 22 school year we're very fortunate enough to open a brand new comprehensive Middle School beautiful building we were able to blend two amazing staffs into one taking the existing car turn moving the sixth grade teachers from Dyer
027and they did that seamlessly it's one big family over at Karcher and I couldn't be more blessed to work there continue to see positive growth in both meeting and math and reading scores increasing and one that's very near and dear to my heart is 98 of students feel like they had a trusted adult in the building so all very positive things from last year would continue to grow on that momentum moving forward at this time speaking of positive happenings I wanted to introduce Mrs Hancock in our compassionate crew and I'm going to let the students kind of explain they each have a role here and um I'll turn the mic over to the compassionate crew hello everyone we're looking past however this is not everyone just not everyone can make the meeting anyway that we
028are a group of sixth seventh and eighth graders who are looking to make a difference in the lives of the people around us we find happiness in helping others and assisting those in need our mission is to spread Joy through the Karcher Middle School community and Beyond encourage a feeling of belonging better our learning environment sorry and assist with the organization and maintenance of the culture cover There are 16 people in the compassionate crew about 12 people attend regularly the compassionate crew is led by who is staying right next to me now this is Mrs Hancock she's a seventh grade science teacher and a BLT member last year we organized a cupboard by purchasing and shelving and necessary storage containers we labeled everything to assist students with finding what they need we regularly accept donations
029purchase needed items and restock shelves as they empty thank you we maintain the cartridge cupboard inventory online for those interested in donating items organized advertised and collected a money to sponsor Wisconsin veterans on the state on the stars and stripes on our flight we raced over 7700 enough to send 15 veterans to Washington DC wow um the compassionate crew washes tabletops and public spaces today they did all the teachers rooms that wanted it they write Post-its of appreciation uh they clean teachers rooms during teacher appreciation week they assist in packing up classrooms at the end of the year they use a Bissell Green Machine to reduce carpet staining pull weeds in the front Landscaping pick up trash on school grounds um last year we did an Easter egg hunt we did the ABC countdown and
030we just today signed up to do um bell ringing for the Salvation Army oh good excellent thank you thank you guys for being here I appreciate it thanks Mrs Hancock I just want to say I had dinner tonight with these this group they are wonderful loved every one of them thank you oh sure can you tell me the time again that you're going to be at the four to six on December 12th at pick and save excellent thank you and now I have a another special guest two special guests if you guys want to come up and use the mic or I can bring the mic over there sure miss hunger I'll let you in or Miss hunger Miss allenberg I'll let you introduce yourself and your guest hi my name is Lori ullenberg I
031am new this year to Burlington I am the sixth and 8th grade stem teacher uh and I just wanted to come here tonight to show you some of the great things that are happening in the stem department so um all sixth graders are required to take stem that's science technology engineering and math and in this class we try to expose them to a bunch of different elements of stem to try to spark some interest so they can take some of the classes uh in the future years so in sixth grade they learn the basics of 3D printing they did some basic coding and animations on the computer so they made their own computer games we learned a lot about digital citizenship and they created PSAs and posters to try to encourage good digital citizenship online
032and then we're learning the design and Engineering Process and they get to build catapults and they're building little candy grippers to finish up the year seventh grade that's Miss Dexter she's a high school teacher and then Mr Hoffman they are learning a lot about atoms and electrons and circuits and he's Mr Hoffman is doing some robotics so they give different challenges and they learn how to code different sensors and work together as team to complete challenges and I have Jimmy here and he's going to talk about some of the things that we do in eighth grade okay so in eighth grade stem this year uh we've been learning about the design and Engineering Process with each project we have had to work with a team planner design and then build it with a specific budget
033so far we have designed and 3D printed a mini golf club and an object that had movement such as uh I made this pumpkin fidget it has a lot of movement and well I designed it basically from scratch I put all the parts together and it was really fun to design um and then we basically had to design and build a mini golf course like this one over here um it was very fun and interesting and then we had a little tournament to see who could get the best score on it and then we learned about sound waves and how they travel and how you can amplify them and we had to build and design a phone stand with a speaker amplifier like this um you can put the phone in there and it would
034amplify it by about four or so decibels next uh well now we're learning about circuits and electricity uh we're designing a quiz board that lights up with the correct answer of course it doesn't work uh as you can see if you look on the back it has a nine volt battery and a bunch of um wires uh next we are going to wire inside or a circuit that includes lights resistors capacitors and a switch um I've never actually soldered before so that'll be nice to learn how to solder um and our final project is going to be wiring and building an object that has movement so it's a with a DC motor such as a car boat or an airplane launcher I like stem and I hope we continue in this process foreign so the
035last thing all of our stem teachers have also been participating in Project Lead the Way classes and we're going to roll out the new curriculum next trimester so we're going to have a lot more tailored classes next semester we're going to offer an app creator where kids are going to be able to design create and code their own app which can go live from Google Play The at the end of the trimester there's going to be a flight in space class so they learn about space and flight Concepts and then computer science so they're going to learn how to code and program input and output and then a Medical detectives class where they learn about the different body systems and diseases and they actually even get to dissect a sheep brain so we've been working
036hard there's a lot a lot going on and we're always welcome you guys to come in and see all the stuff we're doing in some thank you foreign [Applause] thank you so much for that both of you I really appreciate it um at this time I'm going to talk um fairly briefly about our two School Improvement plan goals um sure sorry any two you don't have to stick around with the entire meeting in fact your classes start in less than 12 hours so you may if you have any homework you're welcome to stay I don't want to tell you have to leave but don't feel like you defend anybody if you left so anytime but thank you all for coming it was great to see everyone yeah absolutely we appreciate it um our we're going
037to talk briefly about our two school goals from our Improvement plan from this year um Jill did a nice job kind of summing up our data in the last meeting so I'm going to talk briefly about it but I'm not going to go into the weeds um because she did a really nice job talking about that last meeting our first school goal that we're really talking about here and I don't expect everyone to be able to see that is our goal is in reading and math to be at 60 proficiency across our school all of our teachers slos are um designed around this school Improvement plan which then aligned to our District's goals as well so it's kind of a chain of events so the way we're going to get to that is in math
038and English language arts we are utilizing Target groups during our I time block to ensure that all students are growing towards proficiency through closing skill deficits so we've identified students with our math and ELA teachers we sat down together we identified students that the ELA and Math teachers specifically are going to work with during our eye time blocks in our social studies science and applied academic blocks we're going to be utilizing new Zella resource that is newer to the district to implement non-fiction articles into all classes at Karcher focusing on specifically high-level vocabulary and non-fictional Tech skills which is shown to improve uh Proficiency in reading by focusing specifically on those two areas our second School Improvement goal is around teaching the whole student and making sure that students feel safe and accept that at
039Karcher as measured by our school culture survey that will be going out soon we do a plethora of things here at Karcher that surround this and I'm going to touch briefly on some of those things so as we go through here if you have questions please let me know our team time our teachers use this every day to talk about kids discussing data discussing their needs both academically and socially on how we can improve servicing them and helping them our house system which I think is one of the most ideal things that separates a middle school from a junior high and I think it's imperative at this age and it's really nice that our four core teachers in social studies Ela science and math have the same group of students and they're like a small
040family and they're able to develop those relationships and really take off with that so very fortunate that we have both of those things at Karcher our Karcher award days we'll have our first one coming up here in December where students get nominated in front of our staff each each family of the student is invited to come in they'll sit with their particular student and they'll read out a certificate about one of the students that they chose to the entire staff and the other students that were nominated for this way to kind of build relationships and show that we really appreciate students doing the right thing as you can see there we do have different house competitions the picture there highlights a paper airplane contest that we did in September really cool thing to see kids
041kind of highlight their skills in different ways we do those periodically as well um one of the things we do in the morning is a soft start breakfast we have a grab-and-go where they go to the different wings and it's it's really cool to watch the different grade levels uh where they go in and sixth grades kind of all hang out in the sixth grade Wing eating their breakfast before the bell rings for them to go into their class um launch very similar things everyone has their own process some stay inside the launch um in the launch of my others go outside and burn some energy out at recess we talked briefly about the cartridge cupboard and we discussed that last year as well we're very fortunate as a team to get this up and
042running to help kids get what they need basic needs need to be met before we can achieve anything in the classroom so if kids do need food school supplies clothes anything like that they would fill out a Google form one of our student services reps would call them up in an appropriate time so they're not embarrassed or anything else they come up get what they need and then go through get those essential items students can also just stop up in the office as well utilized very heavily this year and very fortunate that compassionate crew in Miss Hancock do a wonderful job of stocking that keeping inventory and all the other things that they highlighted some other things you may not know about that we do at Karcher that I think really highlight what Karcher is
043as a family is a song of the day on Friday mornings Mr Nelson the assistant principal and I we have a song picked out the students hit play they have to be caller number six to Mr Nelson's extension 3004 if you are caller number six you win treats for your advisory they have to get the correct song and artist correct we did have some classes that got one or the other and can get pretty heated but um we do uh we do that song of the day every Friday something we all look forward to both in the office and in the school uh birthday cards we deliver a birthday card to every student each year to build that connection with each one of them if the birthday is in the summer we do it on
044their half birthday so that every kid is receives one of these birthday cards uh daily video announcements instead of kind of like the way I remember the principal getting on and doing the announcements we do it on a video each morning they play in their advisories and then that video get sent home to parents every night so they know the communication they can watch that if they so choose a great way of kind of staying in touch with the parents because sometimes a 12 year old does not go home and tell their parents everything they heard on the announcements we also uh are very fortunate this year we tried something else we had a fairly large turnout for our first couple parent advisory groups but then it kind of dwindled towards the end of the
045year so we wanted to try something different so we're now doing it during the day students will get dropped off and then their parents come right in for coffee with Mr Ryan we go through different things that group has really helped steer different directions we've taken we sent one of the things we heard in our first advisor or your coffee with Mr Ein is we need more opportunities to help and we don't know how we can help we go from elementary where we volunteer and do all these things and we get to middle school and it's like we don't know how to help so we're kind of taking a path with that on how we can get more parents involved because people are willing to come in and help that's our job to help steering
046right direction so we're taking that and that was a voice we heard from uh coffee with Mr Ryan so that was has been a positive thing we've gotten a lot of a lot more people interested in coming in right after they drop their student off to school one of the things once again I don't expect you to see this um closely up in detail but I wanted to highlight we're really trying to be more restorative in our consequences and our system on how we talk to kids as you can see here it breaks down on the bottom all the different consequences that we could use in using with student behaviors our Alternative Learning Experience which some people would call in school suspension conferencing with Administration the green one that tall one is a launch detention
047or after school detention loss of privilege OSS which is out of school suspension other this is a restorative category and restitution one thing I'd like to highlight is our restorative categories at 124 uses of that restorative piece that's actually triple to five times the amount listed there because before a staff member uses that as a referral into our system they have to try three to five strategies for minor disruptances once they do that then they would enter that into our referral system Mr Nelson would meet with that student and explain to them that it's now reached the level where the office is managing it but we've already used our teacher managed techniques three or four to five times that number which is really really what we've really tried to aim for and I'd just like
048to give a shout out to Mr Nelson doing a fantastic job this year I know our staff and students really appreciate his leadership um a couple other things to highlight we do Friday night lives I think this is one of the coolest things that any school does that I've ever been a part of um it's it's very very cool for for our students students come in on Fridays from 6 to 7 30 we have a big dodgeball tournament ping pong bags a lot of junk food um it's just a really cool opportunity for kids to have something positive to do on a Friday night and we get a tremendous staff turnout our staff really shows up to this and that's a testament to them to give up their Friday nights away from their families to
049come support our kids so just another way our Karcher staff does an amazing job let those Friday night lives are extremely fun and our kids look forward to those I look forward to those students of the week we have two students every week or every at least two students a day from each house excuse me each grade level so like one day we'll be sixth grade highlighted the next day will be seventh grade highlight one day will be 8th grade highlighted and then our applied academics so we do this we put it on Facebook um each week after song of the day they get announced they come up get a treat and Karcher character Buck really cool um to a way to celebrate a lot of great positive experiences with kids now we've talked a
050lot about kids some things I also want to highlight is our amazing staff in ways we try to take care of them as well um things such as our teamwork potluck launches our workout wear Wednesdays this is something that Ms Phillips principal at Waller Elementary started and our staff loves it where they wear workout wear on Wednesdays kids think it's great too traveling trophies I mentioned the metal positivity that is one of them we also have a superhero cape that is made out of old basketball jerseys that Miss Phillips's Aunt sold for us together really cool that we hand off to other people and then we also have the spirits the Karcher Spirit which is an old trophy we found an old Karcher before it got tore down that were used and that also goes
051around so ways that we really celebrate our staff for all the for all the different things they do they hand it off to the next person at a staff meeting and give a little spiel about it really really cool and our culture I feel like is just it comes out when the staff member knows that to another staff member um walk and talk coffee this is something that started last year in our PD days at Karcher Middle School first thing we do in the mornings when we have our like in-service day on Wednesday everyone gets their coffee we have a coffee station right outside the gym to start the day everyone starts walking and talking together get moving talking about what's going well what's not going well and then right into it we get started
052with our our presentation so just the way that's every every in-service day staff knows we're coming into the gym we're going to drink some coffee we're going to catch up with someone we don't normally see and we're gonna get rock and rolling with uh the agenda we do positive shout outs in the week ahead every week to highlight the good things we're doing for each other and then staff started this last year as well where you get boot or turkeyed this is uh me getting booed this year it's the Positive Vibes only skeleton and it is a note saying we just appreciate your positive energy at Karcher and then they give you a treat I happen to like sparkling water so I got sparkling water and then I have to pass that along to the
053next person that kind of goes through each month is a different thing this month is a turkey next month is something related to Christmas so really cool way that our staff kind of just takes care of each other which I think that are results and better taking care of our students so just a really great culture at Karcher I cannot be like I said I'm very blessed that I get to work there and serve there it's a great place to learn great place to work and we serve a great community and so uh I just thank you guys for listening to Karcher and appreciate all of our students and staff that came out tonight [Applause] thanks Nick any board members have any questions or comments they want to make for Nick or any of the
054staff members here foreign did you take public speaking under Eric Burling by any chance yes I watched too many board meetings last year That's my kind of presentation that was have fun yeah so you got something to follow okay I'm usually pretty fast I'm usually pretty fast laughs so second item for information discussion is uh annual bullying report so you're going to lead that yeah I we go from you're the cool things at Karcher to a bullying report this big big switch over isn't it um q and mine up here too do you want to thank uh Nick and and John for their work in in all the staff at Karcher I think they're doing a phenomenal job and it really comes through with um how everything that Nick shared so just kudos to their
055to the team at Karcher they're they're doing a great job when it comes to some teaching and learning updates so the first one is the boiling report so every year you need to bring the bullying report forward to you so according to our assists or information system Skyward we had 10 reports of bullying last school year seven of them were at the high school two of them at Karcher and one at Dyer and from those we ended up with 30 of the students that were the perpetrators ended up with an out of school suspension 10 in school suspension um 10 was a detention and then 50 was counseling and or restorative practices so again this really also lends itself to starting to move towards the conversation on working to have restorative practices happening within the
056building so that's where instead of uh we can continually to do negative behaviors towards another student how do we repair that harm at the same time and really start to learn how to uh work with each other and and repair that harm no matter what happens so really wanting to ensure that happens across the district when it comes to restorative practices any questions on the Boeing report do you know if these numbers have gone up or down or kind of stayed steady from last year the Year prior was 21 reported out so this is down from the year prior it's good to see progress thank you then moving on just wanted to Steve mention this as well but just wanted to let you know this the report cards will be coming out tomorrow is when
057they'll go public so that's when we will be able to see um what our scores were at a public level there is really not a lot of adjustments to the report cards from last year to this year the biggest thing that they have made adjustments to is just uh trying to even out the playing field with all of the schools where it used to be that your subgroup data is based on your target populations like uh special ed or socioeconomic status and some schools don't have a very big special ed population or have a really low socioeconomic status for example so the state really did change that and really went more towards 25 percent of your report card being on growth 25 run achievement uh 25 on your Readiness for graduation and then 25 on
058a Target group outcome so that Target group outcome difference now is it's our bottom 25 percent of students no matter what subgroup that student might be in uh it is something that I agree with that I think is the right movement to do um so that every school district across the state is working on what are you doing about the students who are on the in the bottom Echelon of your buildings so really not a ton of differences from last year to this year but just an FYI those are coming out tomorrow and then also wanted to just another update with um Project Lead the Way and Lori did a really nice job um and so did Jimmy talking through what's happening at Karcher just wanted to give an update on a little more progress
059with this and wanting you to know that when or if you see uh course catalogs coming out there are just course name adjustments based on the Project Lead the Way curriculum that we are also embedding so at the elementary level we have a few staff members who are working on being trained right now and at the elementary level you um there's there's multiple different units that you can incorporate and it really doesn't matter which grade level you infuse them into so the staff that are getting trained are first trying to learn about all the different modules we can use and then see where it naturally would go into our scope and sequence with science at the elementary level so they're in that process right now at the middle school like Lori had shared um there
060are all of those names so the app creator animation and Robotics flight and space computer science for Innovative innovators and makers the metal detector Medical detectives and um the magic electrons those are all courses that are projectly the way courses and something that Amy livonian even pointed out assistant principal at the high school she was like I don't think any middle school has that many Project Lead the Way classes um you know that that that's a a really high amount of coursework to have at a middle school level um that is of that caliber so we're pretty excited to have that at the middle school um and know that each of those courses is about nine weeks of curriculum um worth of time and um all of our teachers were working to ensure every every
061course has at least two teachers trained in it so we have at least one person getting trained this year and then next year we'll be ensuring that there's at least two instructors trained for every course at the high school the classes listed there are already in in practice um we've had Project Lead the Way courses in the past the names are not any different except for the bottom one IED introduction to engineering and design that one's currently called 3D modeling and that'll just be a name change but really they are they have been using Project Lead the Way materials in the past it's just really updating that and ensuring that all of our staff are trained in those Project Lead the Way courses then we also have talked about future goals and like expansion what
062what would be next and the goal is to also embed and Infuse these three additional classes at the high school so aerospace engineering engineering design and development and computer integrated manufacturing would be three additional classes we'd like to have at the high school and then at the middle school we'd also like to add design and modeling that course would be one that would be more so sprinkled throughout all the classes at the middle school level but just wanted to give you for a little further update on that especially because of the course catalogs coming out and if you see adjustments and names any questions with that uh next is this is just a heads up not there not a lot to share right now about it but did engage as you know with a library
063book discussion committee and uh it was a fabulous group of parents and two staff members joined me in that conversation in order for us to really start to look at what would be some recommendations from parents within our system when it comes to what should we adjust could we adjust when it comes to library materials in classroom books as well so just wanting to share that that committee will be coming to the board they were they were excited to come here and present to you and um and share what our recommendations would be at that time too we'll bring the updated uh policy too if you remember you looked at the policy with our adjustments to it but we also want to embed these recommendations from the committee and then that would also be something
064that we would like some approval on and and recommendations for when it comes to the policy so just wanting you to know that that will be coming in December um and not wanting you to to wonder where we're at with that so committee did a great job and they look forward to talking with you in December last but not least um that I wanted to talk to you about is that we had learned that in order to engage open enrollments into a virtual program you have to have a charter school so we are in the process of working through that and designing a governance board so myself and Mandy Adams will be on that governance board it will involve some families that have high interest in Virtual learning and then bring that back to you
065guys in um January would be the hope is to have that conversation with you in January and really the why is this is our Wisconsin Wisconsin connect virtual learning is our if you remember we wanted to switch away from Jedi and we are using um the virtual Learning Network as our virtual platform but we also have gotten some feedback from some of our families who are homeschooling and or who are open enrolling out because of virtual reasons and we have really taken that feedback in order to make some adjustments to what we believe we should be doing in order to support All Families when it comes to Virtual learning needs and again wanting to really wrap all of that into the the use of a potential Charter School and we'll bring that to you in
066January so just just an FYI again that's more of a foreshadowing that that is behind the scenes work that's happening our most virtual learning done through Charter Schools they have to be if you want open enrollments I didn't know that so I didn't know that initially either Peter um so if we we don't have to have a charter school if we just wanted virtual learning students that are in District but if we wanted to uh market and recruit students uh into a virtual program from other school districts in open enrollment then you it has to go through a charter is it difficult to set up a charter school in this situation too I mean I know in general it's probably no because we we're going to pull it off before um January 9th so I
067I am behind the scenes we've been working on it I'm not that concerned honestly I think it'll be okay we um have already been working through a handbook of what it all looks like um and it really at the end it's the governance board and the board uh all of you um agreeing that there would be this contract between the governance board and the school board to run a virtual or a charter school so the charter school would have a separate governance board yes I didn't hear your question the virtual school would have a separate governance board but then that would be reporting to the school board I believe yep and the governance board has to meet monthly to be able to run a charter school so we would meet with them Mandy and I
068would meet with them monthly and just give updates on how things are going um but then that then would report back to the board at this level and where would you house that I mean you have to put it in some special place I didn't think so but I don't know oh um you know so we really are looking at running it three different ways so one is a fully virtual so the students there are just doing a check-in via a Google meet if then we also have hybrid where some of our classes the student can take in person and some virtually and then we're also looking into a third option that is high interest your home school families within the district um that would be more uh book LED versus on the computer so
069we also are wanting to provide that as an option as well to families so really there's three different options they could engage in to do virtual learning um Within wisco thank you who's providing the instruction for the virtual the instruction through bln the virtual program is through the teachers that are with the virtual Learning Network great questions to me I feel like it's more of a formality a little bit um in order to you know have the Virtual School what is the governance board work long term is that an appointed position or that's what um to me when I was reading the bylaws when we first put together the governance board I think that would be what the board assists also with determining like so as as people come and go what does that really
070look like and that would be written into the bylaws thank you very that's true with the number of years too so this school board could essentially dictate that uh two years and then we want to review or something okay insurance anybody else questions Jill thanks as always yeah no good information for the board yeah these are all to me exciting things that uh we are really looking to uh be able to gain our open enrollments back into the district and and just trying to do behind the scenes Works in order to do that so we have on the agenda tonight two more items for information discussion the first is uh ongoing policy review and what we're doing by this is we're just looking at two policies tonight uh one of the five Cornerstone functions of
071a school board is policy so the idea here is to spend five or ten minutes as a board discussing two policies and tonight I picked these two because they're uh policy we have um hundreds if not thousands of policies they're all available on our school district website so anyone who wants to read through them they're welcome to these are from our bylaws section so it's the the 100 section uh the first is public comment and the second is the use of electronic mail so as a board I thought we'd have a discussion about the policies specifically I thought it was interesting in the public comments as you know um board members and folks who are attending here we've worked hard over the last year or two years to try to figure out how we can
072better solicit input from the public which is very important we value public comments and we've over the last few months we've actually um changed our Norm in that we are taking comments during items for Action because people I think felt like they weren't being heard at least that was the the feedback we were getting um but I thought we could look at our policy and I've opened up for it's really a discussion among board members um if you have any thoughts on our um public comment policy one of the recent um classes I attended was talking specifically about public comments during the board meetings it seems like the standard among boards is more to restrict public comments to things that are on the agenda that's not Universal but the the comments focus on what's on
073the agenda that serves a couple of reasons one it allows the board to absorb those comments and potentially respond to them because they're on the agenda when comments are made that are not on the agenda the board technically should not be responding because that can break laws with regards to open meetings so I'd like us to consider moving to that model where we our public comments focus on what's on the agenda and we also keep our email open that the public can comment at any point they want to us personally and there's we still hadn't believe this is also in you we have a method for getting items on the agenda or suggesting items for the agenda just a thought and I was at that same seminar and you know different school districts handled public
074comments and a variety of ways and that was one that was brought up at that um seminar we went to that I thought was interesting because if people we certainly want to get input on things that are not on the agenda um but that could be done through email and then you know that frees up people during the meeting to you know focus on items on the agenda um one other thing that came up during that meeting is and we've done this in the past is we've asked people for their addresses and in today's um hyper or you know with more controversies arriving with school district issues uh we that's probably not the best practice or at least to have people State their address um when before they're giving public comments we moved away from
075that also we should record the address though right but it doesn't have to be still out loud correct that's exactly right but the other interesting thing was we've had a policy or a practice I shouldn't say it's a policy it's a practice that we've only allowed people within the district or parents or guardians of District residents to speak at public meetings and Bob Butler who gave the presentation and he's a Wisconsin Association of school boards lawyer suggested it's that's probably not a good practice because in theory if you are a resident of the Waterford School District you still are paying taxes that your state taxes are going to fund the Burlington School District and I think he has a point I think you're fine his point would be you should ask everyone you can certainly
076ask the question are you from the Burlington School District or a parent slash Guardian but you should allow anyone who comes to a meeting to speak I think we should get a second legal opinion on that I know there's a legal opinion I think it was more of a best practice and I think it has a lot to do with just everyone's become so litigious I get it but if it's illegal if it's a legal issue well I don't know if it's from someone that practices law and if we're gonna and that's what he does so a second opinion that would be helpful okay I mean I don't think he's saying it was a legal requirement Kevin I think he just said it's probably a best practice to avoid a potential First Amendment lawsuit unless
077you want to be the first one yeah and that was discussed quite a bit with other districts too and some do and some don't yeah at the beach District at the very least I would suggest if we were ever to move that sort of model that we have those two groups delineated yeah we'll have public comments from residents and parents first and then we'll have a separate section for other public comments so people know where these comments are coming from yeah because we'd probably get more weight I'm not saying we moved to that Kevin I'm saying if we have to move to something like that I would definitely want them delineated why vote then too or for National vote I mean it's ridiculous I guess the only thing I'd raise with our policy is we
078may want to go through our policy because uh with our current system of taking General comments in the beginning um and then taking items for Action where you know we there's probably a few tweaks to this policy that could be made it might be a smart move to make it a little more General so we don't have uh we don't accidentally trip off if we change how we do things so that's a you know thought so that may be something we should look at here in the next couple months especially with you know I think we've you know been looking uh at how we're massaging that policy for best practice yeah that's kind of what I'm saying so that's very controversial all over the state the meetings and some people have had really really difficult
079times with probably commented some Burlington's been good but I mean we've had some terrible in other parts of the state where they've had to close the meetings and everything well it's out there yeah and we're not immune to that either we've had yeah we've had that too yeah a few times we've had adjourn or yeah it's a tough one so do we want to I think it's just for discussion tonight we're not looking at changing policy I just want everyone maybe to take another look at that policy on public comments and think about how they want to do it and then I'd suggest we come up with a policy that's maybe a little more General but just you know ultimately that was what my next question was going to be is do you want to
080have this discussion tonight or do you want people to take this review and come back and we'll we'll reschedule another discussion on it yeah I think it's a tonight's just a discussion only I also want to look at use of electronic mail and that's policy 167.5 I thought that was another interesting one and the one that came up to me that I think is interesting and can be challenging but this is a there's there's only six reasons a board members should use their email and this isn't your personal email this is your school board email and one was just to have brief factual responses to questions posed by members of the public administrators School staff with the current copy of the response sent to the superintendent so if you get an email from a constituent
081you're really not supposed to get into a long discussion of why you feel something it's more of a brief factual response and I think that's again running potentially open meetings but also the idea that we as a board we act as one entity and we deliberate here during Open Session as opposed to emailing constituents with your your policy reasons that being said I get it it's a balance between I certainly wouldn't want to feel like you know if somebody emails me that they weren't getting a full response from me um but it's a balance between those two things I think we have to be a little careful and depend on our administrations for that for some of those questions well that's true too Roseanne and that certainly goes to our policy about the chain of
082command you know as school district we board members you know we have a policy that specifies if somebody has a question for us that's really um not related to a school board policy that we should direct them to the appropriate staff member whether that's a teacher administrator or or Steve is a superintendent I like what many of us have on our tagline that this is my personal opinion I'm not acting as a board member we'll certainly pass this along and discuss it as a board yeah but I think you can't squash or freedom of speech either just because you're a board member you can't but you can also make sure that everyone's following our policies too right so I think so it's a balance Kevin too I don't want to tell everyone you can't email
083anybody that's not the purpose of this it's just to be thoughtful with your email responses to people correct we certainly want to be responsive to the public that we're representing the community exactly I don't know does anyone else have any thoughts on on use of electronic email I don't see needs to tweak this policy it's just you know I just thought it was an interesting policy that a good discussion yeah good to have I guess I'd ask somebody to volunteer to pick two policies for next months you know this could be an ongoing okay let's go five minutes into a couple policies anyone want to volunteer sure I'll pick two okay thanks Barry your turn I'll come Kevin Peter can I just then quickly review uh and maybe for the board's sake so the one
084so the use of electronic mail sounds like you're not gonna make any tweaks there other than just the review tonight the public commented board meetings just so that I can maybe draw your attention to what I think I heard and that is under the section of the meeting for public comment it's letter b and it's the very first part any District resident or parent of an enrolled student may comment and then it continues so if if you'd like to highlight that sentence that might be one of the sentences you want to review that's the the concept of what I heard Barry and Peter say from Bob Butler and Kevin you were addressing that so that specific sentence um the other thought is one that is not in our policy at all and that is whether
085or not you know comments would be restricted to agenda items so if you want to play with language there or your own thinking about whether you like or dislike that comments and then the third one if I'm tracking this correctly would be letter F that is the one that no participant may speak more than once at a meeting which we've been steering away from so that that may be an another item that you'd want to address so those are the three just if I was pointing those out kind of in summary what I think I heard uh that might be be good and then the other one no tweaks and Barry thank you for that if you want to let me know what those are we'll make sure they're attached to the next agenda absolutely
086thanks okay yeah thanks Steve for summarizing that um let's move on the last item for information discussion is School Board norms and all the board members should be familiar with this for those in the audience tonight uh we've had a couple of workshops with a consultant George Stefan who is also from the Wisconsin Association of school boards to help us as a board of uh function more effectively and we had I think a great discussion over a couple of workshops on how we act and we came up with a list of common goals and what we call board norms and by Norms we're talking about things that aren't formalized in policy but are just ways that we operate as a board and uh we all have a copy of the um the Norms that were
087discussed and the commitments and goals that we came up with and I just wanted to put this out there for discussion and make sure that we're all aligned or if we have discussion points on this you know but we've spent hours working with George to come up with this list and had you know I think what it was a productive and Lively discussion about some of these items um but I'll throw it out to the group you know we have the list of uh board Norms in our uh agenda here any comments I think um my personal opinions I think we they're really thorough job of going through it George's George is outstanding yeah he was Barry or Susan anything down there um I think it's a it's a it's a very good list it's
088comprehensive and I would just like to see us all adhere to the to all of these norms and I guess I want to clarify too that I don't think these norms for the most part things we're already doing but this is just formalizing it and making sure I think there's also a value in all of us that that's uh semi-circle up here aren't going to be here forever we're going to have new board members come in and this is something that could be helpful to guide new board members as they get integrated into the board oh Marlo are you good with the Norms sure okay um Roseanne and Kevin yes all right well good I guess you know I use these then as a guide in the future if we have uh you know how
089we operate that's it for items for information discussion we have two items for action on the agenda uh the first is the cart the start college now early uh college credit and Amy livonian who's here if foreign my name is Amy livonian and I am one of the new assistant principals at the high school and I want to thank you for having me here today tonight to talk a little bit about start college now and the early college credit program so I'm going to compare quickly this past spring to the requests for the spring coming up so last spring we had 21 students registered for 38 courses at four different colleges the colleges that they requested this past spring were Gateway WCTC UW Parkside and Marquette it's kind of small here but if you look
090you can see also there's a breakdown of the grades that the students earned in those start college now and early college credit program courses students that do not pass one of these courses are required to pay on their own then this spring we have 24 students that requested 43 courses at five different colleges those five different colleges for this spring are Gateway WCTC UW Milwaukee UW Parkside and my ad foreign college now briefly is through technical colleges that's offered to Juniors and seniors examples of courses that a student would request through Stark college now we have for the spring um Cosmic cosmetology and barber is one we have EMT courses and there's web programming those are just three examples of the many courses that students have requested for the spring and these requests doesn't necessarily
091mean that this is actually going to be the schedules in Spring sometimes things fall through or one of these courses doesn't fit within the student that requested its schedule um early college credit program is offered to students in grades 9 through 12 and those are through the UW system schools and as you can see up here some examples it's all the way on the bottom um some examples are um visual language and criminal justice film studies those are all the ones through the UW system schools and mayad through early early college credit program through Stark college now the estimated total for all of the credits is 11 844 dollars through early college credit program through the UW and myad schools the estimated total is fifteen thousand eight hundred and ten dollars so both start college
092now and the early college credit program totaling 27 654 dollars how did mayaad come to into this discussion so to my it's by my understanding that there have been students in the past that have taken courses at my Ed not many but a few this is just one student that's requesting three courses um yeah it's just to my understanding it's been in the past that's a couple students have taken or and requested courses through my ad it's if we don't offer it at the high school yeah a lot of money yes the board I think a sticker shock because it's yeah nine credits 11th Grand plus right certainly yeah is is so those course terms excuse me no it's hard those courses are not offered at those course they're not offered at WCTC or or
093Gateway to my understanding no I would like to know what those courses are they're here yeah if you look so the second page those are the course requests and the final tab those are the like runner-up so if one of these courses doesn't work then the student has chosen like a runner-up course if it doesn't fit in their schedule for example so the mayad if you go to the up a little bit they're right here those are the three and it's the same student so the courses are systems of drawing visual language and Fabrication so the rule is it can't you can't offer this the course obviously at BHS because they have taken VHS if if the course the my ad courses are offered at a public institution at a lower cost do they have
094the choice but to where they want to take the course that is a good question yeah I mean I'm sorry to put you on the spot Amy but no no that's that's fine I appreciate this is a state loss this is not something that Burlington school district is making uh certainly yes yep right but if if if our Administration looked at those three classes in the curriculum in the syllabus of mayad and compared that to a Gateway or a WCTC and they were very similar we don't have to accept that correct that's the question I asked and I don't know if that's true does the student have the ability to choose which higher level or which Institute of Higher Learning do they pick they should go to or do this does do they have to
095do we have some control over where they are you saying that state law allows them to pick any class that's not offered at BHS and we have to pay for it is that what you're suggesting I know that as far as I mean we can contact DPI my understanding is at a technical college so we we may need to just take a look at that yeah I'll I can look into that we can certainly look into that and see if there are any comparable classes it is a good question Wisconsin Tech any other questions of course and we will look into that certainly thank you for listening thank you oh yeah I think we need a motion before we go on because we have to approve this but we can have the flexibility for potentially
096so I'd ask for yes to modify yeah because this was an item for action and you know this comes up every year when you approve this program so I entertain a motion to approve this but I'd like the uh perhaps we build in some flexibility so that if you know the issue that you brought Kevin can be addressed you know can we substitute courses to a different you know what uh do we have to take money what's the timeline that this has to be approved by before so the deadline for applications and stuff was October 1st um they're registering for courses probably december-ish so yes this is for spring so we do have a little bit of time certainly enough time to look into this could we bring it back in December in the agenda
097there do you think I don't know yeah could you approve the dollar amount not to exceed 27 000. I think that's a good way to handle it and then we'll ask but then we're including my ad in there even yeah but not to exceed and then we'll look at the issue no yeah I personally I would rather table it and have them have the administration get the information and we can have a special meeting via Zoom to discuss it it's not like it's going to be a forever meeting right if the information is available and wtcc offers it or Gateway offers it and we have a discussion with DPI I can't imagine that zooming would take more than five minutes yeah does anyone else want to address it tonight or do you we feel like
098we're on a table because I'm well we can vote on it yeah I mean you can make a motion to table it you can but you don't want to say table because table means you have to come back to it tonight you have to postpone it yeah that's that's Robert's Rules of Order table means to bring it back tonight yeah it does own it foreign you could just say motion to bring back to another meeting the motion to bring back to another meeting I'm sorry second all right motion's been seconded to bring this topic back to another meeting to the next month meeting or another school okay special meeting yeah because Amy we will address it if it has it's pressing and we'll talk to the sooner we get the information exactly we can call
099the special meeting yeah well motions made in seconded uh to postpone anyone have any comments hearing none I'll call for a vote all in favor say aye aye opposed nay all right we're gonna stop uh second item for Action is our couple updates to our policies and bylaws from that Neola recommends and this is tonight's our second reading um Steve you want to kind of just give us a rundown on yeah so once again last month you saw what is update volume 31 number two this was the this is the summer update and these are the policies that remain and so you saw these as a first reading last month and now these are for your approve action and approval to be updated okay so uh I entertain a motion to approve the naola policy
100updates so moved second okay any comments through the board I guess I should ask in the audience if anyone has any comments on the policies I forgot to do it for the first one or I guess we postpone that anyways okay hearing none uh I'll call for a vote all in favor say aye aye aye opposed nay all right they pass all right uh speaking of future meetings uh we are talking looking at a special board meeting on the 28th which is two weeks from tonight on a Monday but we also want to schedule a workshop and that would be to talk about referendum issues like we've this is kind of part two of another Workshop that the board did a couple weeks ago seems like a lot of referendum reference passed yeah they did
101it was about 70 to 80 pass rate for both operational and capital um in the last election cycle but is no secret we're looking at something for April uh I know board members I asked you check your calendars on the 21st or 28th so next two Mondays I know Taylor had an issue with the 21st 21st or 28th 21st anyone else have a conflict with me yeah I won't be in town on the 21st okay well then that's all that settles it let's do the 28th as a workshop um can you make it together most likely Susan or Barry fine with me okay let's plan on that and like we did last time I think was from six to eight let's plan that we had kind of a firm stop that's good yeah um and
102then our uh I guess I'm gonna suggest we do the workshop Steve that night and then the special board meeting that we were talking about was like a building and grounds update I think we could maybe hold that until the December maybe unless you tell me otherwise there's no rush the the two items that are in the bucket for a special meeting include the close of the Karcher referendum project as well as a sort of a final update on the donors project at the stadium at Burlington High School so those are the two items that kind of go together for most sort of buildings and grounds and finance topic I don't there's not it's not an urgent thing it's something we'd like to you know get done here in the next few weeks so if
103we need to do the workshop the referendum workshop on the 28th we'll find another time okay thank you I think the referendum Workshop is pretty time sensitive I'd suggest yeah we stick with the 28th on that one and then we can talk later if we're going to hold the uh BNC uh topics till the 12th and that would be our next monthly regular school board meeting Monday no uh December 12th so that's the other future board meeting um that being said I'd entertain a motion to adjourn I move we adjourn second okay motion invade in a second any comments hearing none all in favor say aye aye opposed nay all right everyone thank you for coming tonight good job Peter well well done
