all right it's seven o'clock so i'd like to call the monthly meeting of the burlington area school board to session welcome everybody i'm glad we're everyone here is we're glad we'll be in person again so and thanks for everyone for taking time to come out tonight um if we'd all um stand we're gonna do the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all toby will you do the roll call list here here carlo brown gary kayla michelle here kevin bird here roseanne here susan kessler thank you thanks dobie next agenda item is we'd like to review the minutes of the previous meeting and i'd entertain a motion to approve i

move we approve the minutes that's right second okay motions are made and seconded to approve the minutes of the june 14th school board meeting a discussion hearing none i'll call for a vote all in favor say aye aye aye opposed nate all right minutes are approved next is on the agenda is our citizen comments and uh before we we start with that i just like to you know point out a couple things and again welcome everybody thank you for coming and we're excited to be back in person and hear your comments i know it's been it's been a long time and uh it's great everyone's here there is a sheet that i know everyone has um it has a list of kind of the guidelines um and i thought this would be useful for people

to go to have in hand because people may not know our policies on how public comments work in this i think it should facilitate a better discussion um i know when i was in the public before i got on the school board i didn't know how the public comments worked you know when you could talk but this is the one chance for the public to speak during the meeting after this then the board will do our business that we have to do every month um but again we're thrilled you're here and we're looking forward to hearing your comments i do want to highlight a couple things on this sheet just so that we're all aware um each member of the public is is limited to three minutes to help you barry schmaling here who's the

tallest member of our board will raise his hand at around 240. so if you're speaking and you see barry raise his hand time to go into conclusion mode if you can't or if you're able please stand when your name is read i have the signup sheet here so i'll read off your name um please state your your name your home address if you have a group affiliation please state that in your topic um please direct your comments to the board members um we do not respond to public comments and this is all based on our school district policies and these aren't rules i'm making up these are the board policies um as the board president i'm responsible for running the meeting and i will interrupt and warn people or potentially terminate someone's right to speak

if the statement's too lengthy if you go over the three minutes if it's personally directed abusive obscene or relevant i hope that doesn't happen today i'm confident it won't um our board policy limits the entire public comment section to one hour but we can vote as a board if we decide to extend that we ask everyone just treat everyone with respect you know basic courtesy but i'd also ask people like to refrain from clapping cheering and certainly from booing or making any kind of derogatory again just common purpose i also want to highlight that we did receive board comments this month we have 19 they're available for the public to read those are emails from people those will continue in the future so i encourage people to email it's an effective way for board members

to get information from the public um and that's all i had oh i guess i'll point out one of the things so people know we are live streaming so if you can't attend a meeting in the future you can still watch our school openings the camera's right over there so uh people can watch tonight and it will be posted then on our website so um with all that being said um former board member phil kettering i'm phil kennerhagen 2000 crossfader of burlington uh and my comment is in directly towards critical race theory when i was on the board and all the board members that were on the board that i know that i always ask them when a big issue came up did you do your homework i'm asking you to do your homework a

critical race theory when you get done doing your homework i want you to look into a mirror and that image that's looking back at you in the mirror i want you to ask that image damn i racist and second am i an oppressor thank you thanks bill uh stacy coleman you're next hi i'm before um and i decided i wanted to look into it further and um we do not like what we were discovering about critical race theory equity or whatever label they decide to pay something to hide that it actually is critical this is not about branching students and staff together this is about creating a vision it's very similar to when schools decide to talk about bullying or take on bullying and it's um it gives bullying the power when you talk about

bullies and stop following and don't be a bully what actually happens is it makes the bone rise and there's more bullying and that's similar to what's happening with cit the more energy that we give racism the more that these kids will believe they're racist we'll call other kids racist and just feeds the beast that we are not by the way i don't agree with dpi's decision i'm disappointed and confused on why this wasn't challenged when they came up with this conclusion in two days i never got a survey pretty sure a lot of people in the city and the town didn't get a survey so the fact that they've decided that to label us racism or racist i find absolutely appalling and i would like to see some leadership stand up for the people in

this community and the children to be their voice and actually start allowing them to be themselves and um please do not allow critical race they're given this agenda to continue to be pushed into school thank you thank you erin melby aaron melvy 2821 circle drive first i want to thank you for getting us back into in-person meetings with actual public public comment being able to see each other in person is critical for communication transparency and accountability my main concern tonight is how basd has been backed into a corner by the recent dpi rulings this is a bureaucracy at its finest the state seemingly believes burlington is incapable of taking response responsible action steps on its own in regards to teaching and disciplining our own children equally regardless of race gender beliefs etc i take this

personally and you should too burlington is filled with intelligent capable people we don't need big brother micromanaging our district we certainly don't need to hire a director of background equity or whatever we're calling it now to come in and tell us how to treat our students with fairness and respect i truly believe our student our teachers and faculty already know how to do that i believe in equity in schools yes i said equity in equity and not just equality our teachers have a responsibility to give students what they need to pass each class grade level and eventually graduate high school if a student is struggling academically i expect our teachers to recognize that and give a little extra extra help to those students who those students or give them the resources needed to advance i

do however have a problem with assuming that just because a ch a child is a minority that they need extra help or if a child is white that they need less attention given what i've read of the of the corrective action plan the national equity project yeah the national equity project and the director of equity position my fear is that too much attention will be given to to race skin color and culture and not enough on actual needs of students i want to state that i'm finally that i'm fully opposed to hiring a director out of equity by that name or any other this being said as reports come coming from the unnecessary dpi mandated audits please don't be bullied into making decisions or making changes going forward we are fully capable of making decisions

for our own district and after all who knows our community and what we need better than us not consultants from madison and certainly not any activists from ucla and lastly i know it's not on the agenda tonight but i urge you to keep masks optional for the full thank you thank you ryan mueller hi bryan mueller three zero six one two cedar drive getting in board members basd will not get a fair unbiased audit from either dan lawson or ics equity i urge this board to review the audit results from both entities with a high degree of skepticism and ignore all recommendations that do not come from a place of unwise objectivity if the board was able to properly research and vet dan lawson you would have found a facebook post he made from a

blm rally on june 4 2020 where he advocates for removing police liaison officers from schools this board would have found his work a narrow scope to policy recommendations that does not consider the broader picture nor unintended consequences of those proposals does this district really want to associate with and take recommendations from someone who appears to be active within a group whose stated goal is to disrupt families do we really want advice that will jeopardize our children's safety ics equity was sold by mr plank as a group that knows southeast wisconsin but he made no mention that their recommendations have been an abject failure in terms of improving both achievement gaps and the feeling of inclusion for students the asheville north carolina school district engaged ics equity for three years at a cost of over one

hundred thousand dollars for their investment the asheville school district went from having the fifth largest achievement gap between black and white students in north carolina in 2017 when the district started its engagement to the largest achievement gap in north carolina in 2020. the ellenberg school board just last month voted to halt all equity and inclusion work that dates back to 2012 when they first engaged with ics to help implement equity programs and they did this because their achievement gaps were getting bigger year over year and their students were feeling uh declining sense of belonging it is also worthy to know that ics equity implements their programs through the lens of crt does this sound like a consultant that is going to give us a fair unbiased audit does best really want to take the advice

of a consultant that has sent its client clients back in terms of progress towards closing achievement gaps and making students feel more included according to the plan submitted to dpi burlington area school district needs to complete two audits but in the submitted and approved correction plan there is no timetable established as to when basd must create a plan to implement the recommendations of the audit and then subsequently submit submitted to dpi it merely states on page 3 that basd will create a plan to implement the recommendations and submit to dpi given this lack of time bounding to respond to audit findings i urge this board to proceed with caution once the results of the audit are in and carefully consider whether the results are truly unbiased findings thank you thank you bonnie kettering bonnie kendrick

0162000 crossway road wilmington wisconsin first thank you for meeting in person we appreciate it we like our voices heard for these three minutes thank you for continuing to report them that's very helpful to the other hundreds hundreds and hundreds of people that watch it i would like to say that if we're in the efforts of being having a deficit in our budget how can you take one-time money and hire a whole new director of whatever you want to call it or even fathom the formation of a new lte that even after the first year what about year 2 3 4 35 36 that is all right on the taxpayers shoulders this this will not go away in a district that is high is heavy in the administrative ftes you just cannot afford to be hiring

people at this time and creating positions please also understand that portland oregon has caught has taught critical race theory for 10 years and look at the summer they had last year we don't want that thank you thank you miss steve gilbert mr gilbert 5237 state 136. um first i'd like to thank you all for meeting in person it's long overdue and we really appreciate it um critical race theory faculty initiatives transformative social emotional learning diversity and inclusion culturally responsive teaching implicit bias anti-racism and yes dismantling racism no matter what you call it or what buzzwords you want to use for the day what you're set to do to all the children of the district isn't right this movement isn't one of the quality it's teaching children from a very young age that if they're white

that they have a systemic privilege they didn't burn what they have they were given it they should feel guilty for being white and they must atone for the sins of their ancestors it teaches children of color that no matter how hard they work they will simply never be on the same level as their white counterparts that they deserve additional resources because they couldn't possibly achieve the same outcomes as the white kids and what i find most appalling is it forces innocent little children to see their friends in the skin color and get not as an individual you're allowing this district our children to be used as pawns in a very political game remember what you say looks political now the single parents in this room would argue against our children being taught accurate history but

without the stick from the life to the right curriculum in this district could use a good overhaul a quick example in sixth grade my son and his five friends had yet to be taught three branches of the us government i think that's unacceptable it was said during a youtube meeting that fighting dpi would be too expensive what dollar amount would you put on our children i would spend anything i would beg borrow and steal for my child instead of paying 100 000 plus to an equity director whatever label you want to put on it to match what it really is and then all the tax payments you're going to have to shout out the staff trainings and the whole curriculum why not take a stand for all the children push back on gpi and bcdr

and be a support for all of the families in the community bring us together have parent education seminars on child development sponsor fun community events so families of all backgrounds in color can come together and feel connected have parent listening sessions so issues and concerns can be addressed before they become media most importantly remember that parents are responsible for instilling values and morals teachers are paid to educate our children so they can compete in the world thank you rich strong hi i'm rich stroll 1995 nable growing in wisconsin a couple of things i'd like to address before i get into my comments one i'd like to congratulate connie zinnin on her upcoming retirement she's done a great service to the community and school district well-deserved looking forward to your retirement um second thing i'd like

to point out is just congratulations to marla brown and taylor richard we haven't been in person uh congratulations on your election re-election this last call a resounding for both of you congratulations um i'd like to turn my comments towards critical race theory as well that one of the leading proponents uh and whose materials were actually used in a recent meeting for the city of burlington ibram x candy he recently writes in a couple of our opinion pieces to say that there is widespread racial inequity caused by widespread racism which makes the united states racist isn't an opinion isn't a partisan position isn't the doctrine isn't a left-wing construct isn't anti-white and isn't anti-american it is a fact i'm sorry this is not something that we should institute um in the teaching of our children in

our school system in another opinion piece he writes white privileges are the relative advantages of racism of works to people identified as white whether white people recognize them or deny them to be righteously afforded one's individuality afforded the presumption of innocence afforded the presumption of intelligence afforded empathy with crime and raging afforded disproportionate amounts of policy-making power before the opportunity from a white network afforded well-building homes and research-rich schools afforded the ability to vote quickly and easily and this is something again that we should not be teaching in our schools i believe that it's powerful for children and whether it's called critical race theory or as many other people pointed out here equity it takes many different forms i would urge you to push back against dpi and their and their some of the liberals

from madison who handed down their corrective action plan kind of pushing us in this direction i think the community of burlington is waking up and you can see that who's here tonight they're starting to pay attention as what's going on and i think you're going to see more and more people at these meetings just watching and just urging the board to push back against us so thank you for your time thank you for hearing us in person we look forward to seeing you again thank you rebecca johnston i'm gonna pass okay perfectly fine kevin johnson okay that's fine sure adrienne melly adrienne melby 21 2821 circle drive burlington good evening and thank you for returning to in-person meetings i recently had the pleasure of meeting adam coleman the author of black victim to black victor

a book i would highly recommend that each of you try and read i reached out to him this last week and asked him if he could speak to our school board a few sentences what he would say and this is what he sent me to pass on the travesty of jim crow laws was not how white people treated black people it was how the government was utilized to enforce racialized policies which dictated the behavior of both white and black americans as representatives of a government institution creating policies and educational standards surrounded by the premise of race puts you in a similar position as the people in the past that we chastise today if we are to live in a multi-racial society pointing out our differences and enhancing perception of our inevitable successes or failures due

to our pigmentation will only perpetrate the hatred that you claim you want to end if you are doing this to crusade against what you think are black people's inevitable failures then you are doing black people like myself a disservice placing blacks as constant victims only continues to reduce us to being agentless victims when we are america's dictors we do not need your pity and we do not need your saving our differences are only super superficial and treating us differently only highlights how superficial racial policies are if you want us to be equals in america then treat us like one stop viewing us as the white man's burden and treat us as human beings with agency if you truly want to help black people or any minority do something that previous government government institutions have failed

to do and stay out of our way quote from adam a woman now i for one and i hope that others are with me will continue to hold people accountable by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin i urge you to do the same for all students staff teachers administration and the community at large i urge you to hold true to the oath that you took when you were elected as school board members which includes swearing to uphold the constitution of the united states as well as the constitution of wisconsin so help you god as a parent of children who could be in basd schools and as a taxpayer i'm here to let you know that i will continue sending emails i will continue to ask questions and i

will continue to be involved we the parents are not going away great uh jim crowley 26 um ctr has crt has no place in any store especially this is where i live i'm blowing my daughter that's crt language what about equality that's what you should be talking about not everything i've been watching you guys on the school board and you're all a bunch of colleagues you don't have any backbone to stand up against anything there's a couple up there most of you haven't had you can't even have a public meeting okay sir i'm going to interrupt you right there i think your comments uh and forgive me for an update for you but your comments are starting to get personal no they're not getting personal i didn't say any names you work for me i'm

speaking now you're not i'm pulling my daughter out of burlington schools you're not going to have some second grade teacher or teacher or some craft that shoving crap down here about stuff she shouldn't be learning she should be learning abc's kids should be learning about who discovered the world they're not learning that stuff they're learning that everybody is racist that's not right get them um i was going to speak i'm sorry okay i was going to speak on the same book i met adam coleman and adrian said it all so thank you for being here thank you aaron ramcheck over the course of years in the face of severe persistent racism is what caused epi's growing if it's news to you any of you that there's racism in our schools then consider yourselves lucky because

you and your children probably were not the victims of racism we can't continue to do things the way they've been done and that's not just my opinion that's a dpi mandate i want to voice my support for the hiring of the director at leo see what is controversial about this the district has a lot of work to be done to address this issue um and ultimately the answer of simply adding more to the plates of existing staff just doesn't seem sustainable yes everyone will have a role but there needs to be leadership from an individual who's trained in this work all of our children benefit from learning about anti-racism all of our children benefit from the critical analysis of our country's history if the district is truly committed to this work there needs to be

investment in this work direct your comments to us actually yes amazingly i'm going to say that i agree with this man back here most of the members have not been holding up to what they have said they will do i believe that there is one of you who has the backbone to stand up and do what is right um our children grew up together a lot of you i attended birmington my entire education on those of you who claim to be patriotic and have bad patriotism behind racism i am the perfect story of that i am adopted daughter of immigrant workers my children are considered first generation on the land that my blood my ancestors cultivated so when members of this community including members on your school board attack me rub my name through the

dirt how does one not turn around and ask why that is majority of the people in this room are white because that is the majority of the population of our community so when people have finally stood up and said their experiences that they have had about this school district we're told that we're learning we're told that it didn't happen because most of you don't know that it happens notice that most of us aren't here do you know why that is that's because most of us fear there are members in this room that have started hate groups against us there are members in this room that have threatened the lives of my family yet we're told that we are the most cultivating guardians how is that so when i had never asked or set up a

group to intimidate anyone in this room and my parts of organizations sure you all know i'm part of dcpr some of you may know that i'm part of revolution reckoning some of you may not but the point is i think a lot of you could use the terms athlete and turn it into something that it's not we want all students within the school district to be given what they need to succeed whether that student is white whether that student is hispanic whether that student is black there are different amounts of resources and support that each student needs however when the school through records and dpi's fundraiser sorry for an outside entity that came in to look at what's been going on within the school district you have to take into account the numbers the numbers

don't lie for those of us that still have questions about critical race theory i'm not even asking that you teach critical race theory i'm asking that we teach american history which includes all of us thank you thank you uh kate civic thank you my name is i have zero children this is the second i wasn't blessed hold on for a second do you live in the engineering i apologize for it no hold on for a second though ma'am um our policy dictates that you have to either be a resident or accountable for their decisions yeah i have no choice here but our policy again is you have to be either a district resident okay thank you um is that it for public health all right that's all we had for public comments today well thank

you again for everyone here [Music] this is a letter from high school he wanted to make sure that every board member got a copy of this letter i know that it's probably not the way you normally do things but this student wanted to have his voice heard thank you all right well i want to thank everyone again um for having a chance to uh for coming first of all and then also for the civil discussion that we had um next on our agenda is correspondence and board communication my statement was very great critical race theory or anything hold on for a second sir before you start speaking um yes to answer your question um because it's new this time let's i'll allow it this time but next meeting please sign up and then please state

your name and stand up if you can and your address okay thank you my only point is that's critical race theory to my judgment or call it anything you want is an assault on your culture and i don't think this board of education or this administration has the right to impose that on our kids or our community without a referendum or taxpayers we have to say what's going on to it including the hiring of people who administered um moving on to our next agenda it's correspondence and board communication i do want to mention one thing normally steve plank our superintendent is here he's on vacation um right now which uh well well needed an earned vacation uh to my right our our current um assistant superintendent connie zimmern as uh mr strom said she's retiring

and jill osleger who will be our future assistant superintendent is also joining they're going to essentially take steve's role in this i also wanted to let the public know the board is currently going through the process of our evaluation of the superintendent by state law we are required to evaluate our superintendent we did that in closed session um but that's ongoing right now and it's a three four-step process so i just want to make sure the public knows and then the other thing that i'll mention is for future meetings we uh um several board members have suggested some um agenda items and i just want to make sure our board knows i haven't forgotten those i keep a list we're trying to find a good meeting maybe it'll be next month or the month after

where we tackle some of these agenda items that's on the future arise i just want to make that people know that um any other board members have correspondence or something taylor swift what's up first um i just want to recognize the uh lady gaming softball team to make it to the semifinals and then shout out a couple um the slc player of the year um i just have something that fun that's going on in the summer sally nye is the librarian for the elementary schools and on her own she does a summer reading program and it's at a park or it was at the pool and i go along to help out if she needs a little extra help with the kids and having been a teacher kind of enjoy that and it's i don't

know it's just fun to see kids doing what we as a board are trying to do and let's do what's best for kids to see them reading and enjoying reading and being together and it's just a pleasure for me to as a board member and as a citizen just to see what's going on she does that for no pay she does that because she wants to have the kids keep reading in the summer just a lot of fun and i've learned a lot just the games and things that they've been playing with words so it makes me want to go back in classroom kind of too old but anyway just a happy happy thing that's going on on wednesdays so any other boardroom all right let's move on uh superintendent report is next joe so

yeah that's that's me this time the first time ever so here we go uh just wanted to be able to give some updates on some uh positive things happening within the school district um this summer so far so our high school had a boundary waters trip um that has been going on for quite some some time now and there was 18 students that went with six of our staff they had really great weather there was no rain or wind which the students and staff really appreciate when that happens fishing was really great um it was the most crowded they've ever seen the boundary waters during this time i think everyone's wanting to get out into nature at after covet so that that was a great trip for our kids um when it comes to spring

sports uh taylor did hit on our softball team that did compete at the state tournament they did win the quarterfinals and then they eventually lost to the actual state champions in the semifinals so that was with coach vail ausseth and our students did a really great job representing basd we also had two students compete at the state track and field tournament and that was brad rowe and addison or she goes by addie mangold so those are the two students that competed in track here for summer school we summer school is underway we currently right now have 61 high school students who are taking full-time credit courses that are in person to try to get some of their credits out of the way during the summer within the areas of fayad health or consumer economics we

also are offering credit recovery support in all of our core academic areas and we have staff members supporting all four of those content areas as well in our uh kindergarten through seventh grade summer school we're offering seven different classes both remedial or enrichment focusing on reading math and stem we have over 122 students attending and the k through 7th grade summer school families are really excited to take advantage of the opportunity that summer school is here at the high school so that their students who are in summer wreck could also attend summer school so the the fact that we have both programs here at the high school has really benefited um quite a few of our families 15 of our families have students that are in both summer school and summer wreck summer recreation um

run by becky over here who definitely deserves an applause because there is a record number of students who are attending summer rec this year um the average number of students is 65 to 70 students usually it was in the ballpark of 30 to 40 kids so it's it's it's a high percentage of kids which we welcome everyone we never turn any students away the highest attendance day was 84 students our summer rec staff teach multiple classes they have a pb baseball basketball volleyball soccer archery arts and crafts are all classes taught by the staff we also have car karcher theater which is our elementary and middle school students can get involved in that um that they're going to be presenting the wizard of oz the weekend of july 23rd through the 25th it'll be here

in the vhs auditorium if you'd like to come in and watch that show our burlington ffa members attended the state ffa convention there was three members that just received their state degree chloe ewenheig maddie erdmann and heather smith and then sam han miller i think i hope i said that right was recognized for her state degree from 2020 we also have a vhs alumni um stefan starte who published a really well done video called we were here giving a really beautiful history of the school at 225 robert street so former high school former middle school so that that video was out there and then the summer reading activities also that um roseanne hahn commented on or for sailing i is where kids can gather together on wednesdays at one o'clock and that's in partnership with

the burlington public library also wanted to recognize that nick ryan a little wave nick is our new middle school principal um for um karcher lastly is just with all the building updates as you know we have a longer summer this year we started school early last year so we had a longer summer to get all of our referenda projects finished three of our elementary schools all of them are city schools so waller cooper and dyer are under serious renovation right now all getting secure entrances bathrooms are getting remodeled hallway hallway improvements classroom improvements some some really positive work going on in our elementaries right now the district office is being relocated to the 209 um two nine building on wainwright street that is also underway um and uh being remodeled uh as we speak um

the new district office address will be 209 wainwright uh karcher middle school is fairly finished we're currently having furniture being brought in and installed and the new address for cartoon middle school will be 300 wainwright um all of those projects are just items that we should all be really proud of and are really going to be really nice buildings for the great community was it yeah thank you welcome next the uh bank statement of build stealing all right the june 20 2021 bankstep bill uh total debate dash japan one million three hundred thirty seven thousand four hundred fifty six dollars fifty five cents uh for revenues and deposits you can see total deposits of eight million two hundred forty four thousand eight hundred forty four dollars and twenty you total available cash on hand nine

i would ask that they had a couple of donations towards our dance program yeah sure there's only one other uh well there's two there's a 250 uh donation from the andes company to the dance program to the dance team and then one other to the dance team a 50 donation from anderson chiropractic office so only two this month is a late month for the for most school district business uh i'd like to have a take a motion to approve those donations i accept i move that we accept those generous donations second okay motions made and seconded any further discussion hearing none i'd like to call for a vote all in favor say aye aye opposed name right donations have been approved next the annual health report and jill drager our director of health services is

here to present the annual report so thank you hi joe hi hi everybody thanks for having me to present my annual report on the school health services for this last year it was a very unique year for all of us but especially in school health services it was very busy one of the big things that we are charged with is the immunization of compliance um for for students and making sure that students have their their immunizations or waiters on files and we actually were at 99.6 this past school year which is huge um in light of coded and a lot of families maybe not keeping their doctor's appointments having doctor's appointments postponed and things and actually we were up from 98.3 to the 99.6 so it's a huge achievement um i really want to congratulate

my health aides they worked super hard on this um and and all the parents who turned in everything they needed to turn in so thank you um health room visits um you know numbers were a little deceiving this year because of the fact that we did really ask teachers to limit um students coming into the health room as much as possible um you know we really pushed for people who were naturally well to stay home that was the you know the directive if you have these symptoms to not come to school and we really needed to limit the numbers in the health room to allow some limited exposure between students who are sick and then also to allow our health aide staff to deal with all pullman issues that were going on so it was

a super super busy year in the health rooms and then i do want to make sure that you realize when we shut down for cloven last spring we were unable to do that fifth grade puberty talk so this year i was able to get it in for the fifth and the sixth graders so we were able to get that done and in person so that was um really nice to get to get that done i did the the fifth grade um diner and the sixth grade no the fifth graders um so i was able to get that in both um both boys and girls so that was really good um you know medications meds at school epipens things like that continue to be you know we have large numbers um seem to grow every year

but we're handling that really well communicable diseases were actually down dramatically this year aside from purple so really our numbers of strep throat pink eye mono all those kinds of things we're really really down this year um you know pinkeye we had 67 the previous year and only five this last year um you know strep road 132 the previous year we had 15 this year so really um numbers of critical diseases down so i think that attests to our handwashing um cleaning everything sanitizing everything social distancing masking all that added up to really help limit lots of other diseases that kids get and spread um so i certainly want to just um highlight the colvin numbers um i did have a report broken down first semester second semester but basically year-long totals 227 positive cases

of quoted that is 146 student cases and 81 staff cases those cases then ended up with certain people who needed to quarantine as close contacts so it was you know 1287 you know quarantines based off of those cases so lots of time spent dealing with coleman lots and lots of time each case took about eight hours to work up it was all day as soon as we found out about a case working up schedules looking at camera footage checking seating charts um everything and then having to you know do all that telephone calling i spent pretty much every single night sending quarantine letters um i apologize for those of you that had to get a 40 letter um but it was a lot of work um and then just code related absences so these were

not necessarily positive cases in our schools these were where grandma was positive or mom was positive and then these students needed to stay home because they were close contact it was in so just looking at those numbers you know first semester and second semester um you know this is an incredible amount of time to again still try to track and follow and then talking to those families and figuring out when they can return you know when when was their safe day to return to school so it took a lot of time to track and follow up on all these cases um and then burlington school district staff were offered vaccinations at two two clinics through central racine county health department so um staff we have now over 75 of the staff who've been vaccinated so

that was wonderful thank you for allowing that and helping us get that upset we also worked we partnered this summer just recently with the health department to have a vaccine clinic for the community here so there were 97 people ages 12 and up who participated in that and came and were able to get their um their vaccinations so thank you again that was that was very well received the healthcare was very happy with that turnout um other than that it's just been a pretty regular year we were still able to get staff flu shots down in fall we did staff cpr training in fall all spread out at the gym um super hot on our hands and knees but we were able to get a large group of staff cpr trained so we kind of

were just continuing on with as much as as we could i just want to thank again the entire basd staff for how hard they work this year every single staff member how how hard they work to make sure everything was done um parents and and the students were phenomenal they wore their maps they hand-washed they socialized they were totally fine um these little bitty kids you know 4k early childhood they were fine they did great um i loved going out into the schools and being able to see some of that um you know parents who called me and emailed me and asked you know can my kid come to school when could my kid you know come back staff who called me um 6 a.m 8 p.m saturdays christmas eve you know oh my gosh

my husband just tested positive what do i do um we got through the year um but it took a village every single person worked super hard so i i really want to make sure that everyone knows this was a huge team effort and the destructive brain so thank you joey i i guess it would be an understatement to say thank you to you and the entire health staff because if it's been a very challenging 15 plus months i know from personal experience i know you worked off hours because we had conversation with you i think it was like friday at 8 00 pm so yeah so i know you were working around the clock when the issues came off because you answered our questions brilliantly it was tough anybody else on the board have any

other questions on the health report yeah thanks jeff all right uh we have three items for action tonight the first is the dyer elementary stage and i believe danville is here too right here take us through well thank you for having me tonight um first started with a brief overview back in april uh becca saginaw myself presented to you folks in regards to carpenter theater program how the program has been going on for the last several years now and growing um and then we expressed the need to continue to have a space for this program we presented that dire stage would take place for this program we looked at the needs of having lagging upgrades sound upgrades and having curtain upgrades to the stage at that moment we had solicited just a couple of bits

from some folks just to give us some numbers as to where we thought this could uh who would come in at and then the board made a mission to not exceed 90 000 and to solicit some more bids in regards to the theater program so uh in the meantime of course we had all the other construction going on so this kind of got pushed a little bit we still got the bids out right away and got some people in and did some uh and got some numbers out to us which we received from uh lewis sound and video and from advanced communications uh we had already had a business from mainstage and peak audio so all three contractors well four contractors three of the four we have worked with in the district one is doing

work currently right now and nurturing all our elementaries doing all of our technology there and this past week uh becky uh dale levine and followed me for um basically run the production went through the bids look at everything that everyone had to offer and we came to the agreement that if the board approved we would like to go with main stage for the viking system at curtin system which their quotes came back at 47 800 for stage lights and 23 350 for the stage curtains and we would like to move forward with advanced communications and their uh base bid was uh 22 50 and we would like to add in the power monitor speakers and the antelope wireless microphone systems to make that a total of 23 590. um i did provide with you guys

the other quotes that we received from the other vendors as long along with a little table that kind of showed where these came in at portal did come in at ninety four thousand seven hundred and forty dollars um so i could either go back and we could take some of the lights off or we could downsize some of the sound equipment or we could i could ask that the folks you know approved for the test i think emotionally approved as presented second all right emotions are made and seconded any discussion what could be phased into a future here future budget rather than say flat out we're not going to do x like or whatever what can we trim off to save within budget this year and pick up the rest and we'll probably have to

talk back with paul and dale since they truly you know know what they do i could make an opinion i could say well we could cross off a few lights we could always add the lights in but i don't know if those lights are essential to the programs that they're they're running um because you can see on the bid from main stage that it has you know eight colors or spot lengths could we get away with six for a year you know and then and two more in it or it has ten color source xlrs rgb lights can we you know take a few of those off and then spend you know six eight thousand dollars on lights next year um that would be the only area where i could really see you know cutting

down on the curtains uh they need the side curves the back curtains um and at least all these cards will be ones that i don't have fire tested can you remind me what was the budget right we we gotta be close oh yes we're just don't work and this is from a referendum from where we've stayed on other projects well i think as long as we're doing it we should do the best job we can and uh putting in things afterwards we already started sometimes it's more costly than we think yeah and when we solicited bids back in there was already a 10 increase any further questions or discussions none i'll call for a vote um all in favor say aye aye opposed name all right motion passes uh dan thank you very much and

uh as a parent of a karcher theater kid i will make a shameless plug at this weekend next weekend they're performing the wizard of oz um here at the high school because karcher obviously is not fit for production right now so uh next item on the agenda wia renewal i think i thought perhaps that eric white was going to be here did not know that that's okay this is yeah this is just something that we do every year as my understanding here we need to be a member of the wia i know kevin i'm going to call him up you'll notice there's a check on that uh application for girls wrestling it's a new sport that was added and you know kevin's work without promoting that sport for young ladies um there's an opportunity to

compete too so uh we have our traditional co-ops a couple of our gymnastics and our boys our friends men's men's and women's swimming rather than that it's our normal sports as you know cheer and dance are not wia sports but we still offer them they are endorsed by the wiaa through the wisconsin association of cheer and parents so uh that gives us over 24 now 25 offerings i believe for extracurricular in the athletics competition type events for our students at the high school so it's just naturally new back in 2015 the wia also uh cancelled the news they used to be dues but because of their tournament revenue they're pretty much a self-funding obstacle has been a little tighter uh we just have some assessment fees and things like that but it used to be

back in the days when i was athletic it was close to a four thousand dollar uh renewal due but now it's you know just over a thousand so well the shooting as well as another extra record yeah but that's not that so eric what's the impact of checking the box for girls wrestling are we having a girls wrestling program or next we have had we have had a number of young ladies that have wrestled before and it's probably kevin has there's meats we do have meats where they are able to go to uh none of the crack there's one that's probably one of the best wrestlers in the world that's not that doesn't go to the school because she wrestles internationally she does a lot of online learning that way on colorado she's created usa

team but uh we've had a number of young ladies that have wrestled jv and in the future though because of what we there's a strong female presence in our community the tri-county ken area that i do see in the future probably have a the fir you know if you have a trivia question who's the first female varsity wrestlers i can tell you stand up phoenix here's our first state champion right there's a number of years ago and the numbers have grown and now the wh offers the sport so it's kind of a cool thing it's been a long process of getting approved through this state they're very challenging but they got it done excellent i want to add that the wie is really a wonderful organization i see i hear from them once a month

when i go to the meetings in madison and i met the new director who was the first woman who's ever been a director of the wiaa very interesting very much a go-getter you know wants to do what's best for kids i really liked her a lot and she was very um interesting she said eric fitzwick does a very good job representing burlington on this committee so i think we can be proud of that we come to burlington so i definitely am a favor of paying for the news for this is good for kids thanks for that uh input okay make it motivated for the wa contract a second okay motion made and seconded any further discussion here what are the co-op gymnastics uh it's it's but now it's not as big as it used to

be um we are with lake geneva badger and i want to say union grove and then it's wilmot with scotia catholic central idea i would know if it split now it's not the big super one so the core of ours is uh burlington and the geneva and lake chambers called the physical aspect of that yeah next year it's interesting that uh gymnastics is listed under non-contact co-op swimming and diving are those under contact oh shallow pools um okay uh any other comments or questions uh hearing down i'll call for a vote all in favor say aye aye aye opposed nay all right motion passes all right uh 20 21 22 academic standards i think i can turn this that's jill's going to take it all right uh we ask that you approve the recommendation to

continue to adopt dpi's academic standards as required each school year so move second all right but motions are made and seconded to adopt uh the 2021-22 academic standards uh any discussion hearing none i'll call for a vote all in paper ci opposed all right motion passes all right uh future meeting dates um our monthly meeting next month will be august 9th again 7 o'clock will be the public meeting we do meet in closed session prior to that for personnel at 6 30. um same thing will be happening in september the date will be uh september 13th but that will also be our annual meeting and that starts at seven also and then after that we have our school board meeting and that is scheduled for 7 30 but it will happen whenever the annual meeting

finishes um we may have a person a closed session personnel meeting uh later this month that's the only thing but that's to the attorney and that would be probably for the superintendent evaluation process to keep that going um that's all i have unless anyone else has any comments i'd call for a motion to adjourn so moved second a discussion hearing none all in favor saying aye aye aye close name all right thanks again everyone thank you for coming yes yeah
