001Yes. >> Crystal. >> Yes. M >> we'll go ahead and stand for the pledge of >> allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the stand indivisible and justice for We've reached the uh public forum part of our agenda. Is there anybody from the public who would like to stand up and speak >> or sing? So um please state your name. Higlets from Greenland. Um I just I'm part of the consolidation group that and I kind of was learning some different things about recommendations for class size and they had a recommendation for like length on the school bus and such. I learned that Royal doesn't have anything on that, right? And uh here people out in the Publix and some people are concerned about with consolidation classes too big, kids are
002going to be on the bus too long. Then you also hear other people say the buses are coming in and they're half empty. We need to get rid of routes. You hear they need to put consolidate put all the kids in one building. When I was in school, there's 40 kids in the class. And I think as a board you should put a safety net or something so that the kids are only on the bus for an hour. The class size I think she recommended 25 kids for a teacher. And granted granted every class is going to be different. Um, when I was in school, there was a class 1997. We're troublemakers. We missed out on a lot of field trips and behaved in elementary school and such. You're going to have that and kids.
003So you can't just say 25 or whatever, but I think you should make it so you can't expect a teacher to have 40 kids or whatever that number is just to set a benchmark. And even if the consolidation doesn't go through and Greenwood or Loyal doesn't pass a referendum and we need to make cuts, we would have that safety net there to ensure that the class sizes stay manageable for the teachers and for the kids to learn. And also the um bus rides don't get so long by trying to make saves cuz you don't want the kids to suffer. So that's just my kind of idea. I realize that neither one has anything in place right now. Thank you. Any other public comments at this time? If not, we'll move into the consolidation plan core
004team updates. So with the core team update, all I'm going to say is so we have uh the two superintendent and schoolboard presidents meet and with HSR and my on Wednesday mornings every other week to kind of prep for the task force meeting and to prep for this meeting. So just to make sure that we're always one step ahead of everyone where we are planned and prepared for that that those meetings. So that that is where what is consisting of our 14th um and task force task force is uh our 12 from oil and 12 from Greenwood that get together. They have had three meetings two in Greenwood. One first meeting was dealing with facilities mainly and touring Greenwood facilities. Second meeting was loyal facilities touring of that facility or this facility. Um and looking
005at population and some I would say bus pickup routes of where people are kids are families live that ride the bus open enrollment map. Uh and just talking about square footage and where what what is good square footage for each student and compared to are these buildings big enough, small enough, whatever. So just a lot of information there. So the first three meetings are allformational. Last meeting, third meeting was financials. went through both districts, looked at uh um those financials, so we need four starting in their position where they're at right now. So, very good information. Anything else? >> I just add that my HS didn't come to this meeting because they didn't really have an update. They will be at the 18th meeting on the 18th. Um they will give they'll have two joint
006board meetings to report on. Um, and then the the other thing I want to mention or or advocate for is both our district websites have information under a tab called consolidation study uh that is being controlled by and and updated by my and HSR uh with all the information that is given to folks at the uh task force and core team meetings. So those presentations are on the website consistent in both districts. So if you're looking for information, that's a good place to find it. Um and if you have questions about it, let us know consolidate board organization. So we talked about that, voted on that last last um joint meeting. No, we really don't have any discussion on that. Um, did we did we do anything with the at large? Like I think that
007was the final. I don't remember if we did anything we did anything with the at large position on whether that whether that's starts with a three, two or oneear term. Was that part of the motion? is we did we find out what the statue >> that statue you get to pick because that's not B that's one that's only one that's only one um spot the the three east of Owen and the three west of Owen by statute will be determined by vote votes received um who gets the three starts with a three year two year and one year term but the at large or you would decide as going borders whether you do that now or I guess it doesn't matter when you do that you have a you have a general um layout of
008the cons consolidated district board but I assume a piece I think that was missing okay um any questions up to this point whoever Whoever gets in or whoever gets in barely gets their feet I agree with the community. >> Yeah, my opinion is kind of the same. I think a one year would be a little bit too short. I was actually thinking three because I guess I'm looking for stability to start it out here, but two to three probably. >> I move to have the at large position on the board. Motion made a second for a 2-year term for the large position. All >> I will make the same motion to have the atlarge position be a 2-year term. I do have that. Um I have the percent out there to the motion and everything
009from the last meeting. So I have all that back clean that up and then I can share what that looks like as part of the consolidation of the plan. All right. I move into adopt committee reports for any committee. >> We just have a really short update this time. Um just wanted to remind everybody that voting is open and will continue to be open through March 11th. Um the flyer that went out to parents to elementary students um so that voting closed today. That was my mistake. We made some change at the end and I did not change it on that form. Um so there was a discrepancy um on the dates and I take full responsibility for that. That was my fault. Please know that we are accepting um the votes for the mascot
010and the name through March 11th. Um and then the branding committee meets again on March 15th and we will be reviewing all of those submissions, counting and tallying everything and finding out the results. Um again, keep in mind that only one vote per person um will be accepted. Um okay, that's about it. Crystal, you just mentioned one vote per person. If if I sit on my computer, can I vote multiple times? Technically, I don't know if you can vote multiple Yes, you can. Um, but I know uh just speaking with uh it that if you do vote multiple times when we look at it, it will say your email address and then it will say like one, two, three. So if you went on and voted more than one time, yes, it is going to
011show us that you voted more than one time. So So yeah, don't don't do that. Please, >> Joe. Crystal, do you ever know what time is? >> Yeah, we will send out an email to our committee reminding them. Okay. What was on the branding committee tonight was the thought of what happens if we're not consolidated? Do we still use the whatever the winning vote? Obviously, we wouldn't be whatever the school district name is, but the question is the mascot. Like when we're cheering on a co-op football game, who are we cheering for? LG or I don't think that has to be a decision made, but I think that that's what was brought up last meeting and put on this agenda. So, we're not ready to discuss that. I don't know if there's urgency to discuss
012that >> either. Well, that's a loaded question. Uh I don't know depending on what happens is that something that you take back to the community and there's a question of them and say hey look you guys pick this one um going forward here's a couple options now you never know we're LG whatever we are now and you could be the phoenix which one you guys want to do going forward with the co-op sports and put that over that way that's one option or even the way it is now I mean is there a right or wrong I don't to to appease the public opinion. I would probably have been taught right say, "Hey, here's another option." I cannot as a coach, I cannot think of one sports team without thinks deserve that stop. and what
013you decide it is and how we get there. I guess I don't care. But the teams are important to not deserve a mascot. Um I guess right now our gyms we have our sports teams on them. I think it's going to confuse it probably more about like you have three different types of shirts for different sports for different things. So I guess when I look at it this was done for consolidation I think at that time consolidation if it does happen that's going to be changed yes at the end and if they said no it was not you know consolidation then bring it back at that time but sports team >> I agree with you I 100% we get a november we'll discuss it Yeah, I did I did I've heard from a couple people
014about you know even the vote the binding vote is in November if it the other part of it is if it's if it is a yes vote in November do we start using that mascot right away we have co-op sports now like do do we use that even before before July 1 of 2028 do we I think that's the other Well, one of the things after the name of the mascot are picked and if it's a yes vote, then we get colors. So, we need to determine colors because the next time we order jerseys, you would then you would roll over to the mascot at that point. It' be a wasted jersey order to go colors that you don't plan on using in the future. I would say as a coach also um you're going
015to have August, September, October, you're going to have two sports that are co-op. And that is the question we get a lot is so LG what when what are you? Um so not have to have a decision tonight but maybe when the modes are out we can reexamine or Ian I should say we could re-examine and look at it for the co sports. not saying to order anything until after November, but still may have a mascot or a name. So that's what I would say. Good. Um, one other thing, uh, I did get a hold of NTC's president, uh, and they are going to, they are aligning with someone from NTC and we are working on getting a meeting between Joe and I and CBT C and NTC and see how we can work on
016some assistance with programming and um, mainly right now to start off with in the teched area. So, um we'll see where that goes, but the president seems excited about programming possibilities we can maybe assist with us on. No timeline yet. I I think if we could get a a meeting set here in the next month, it would be awesome and we can go from there. All right. High school schedule update. Um just a quick update. Um Andy and I and Maya and we met yesterday. Um as you do the scheding process, we typically start in January by taking student requested. So we get a handbook out classes. Um at this point we kind of got all your course requests in. We're starting to build schedules based on our school based on um Tuesday. We discussed
017kind of like one this year like this year's still going on. We were sharing a CAD class back and forth. There were six kids I believe coming from Boil or for our CAD course in Greenwood. Um with that we discussed you know how can we utilize um some virtual options for those kids. Some classes obviously for JLo much nicer can be done over a computer screen similar to what our kids do every day with English or upper level science and stuff like that through the sweep network. So we'll continue to explore that this year with that CAD class. Um, moving into next year, um, we know that specific, you know, with the departments we have, they probably fall in those upper level classes and those elective based classes. Um, we're now looking to share freshman
018back and forth or computer applications class or biology class or whatever it may be. But kind of targeting those upper level science, math, English courses, and obviously our electives or CTS or computer sciences, tech, business, um, those sorts of things. So, um, we know with our staff in Greenwood that, um, like construction, for instance, is a need. Our our instructor is very skilled in the automotive and machining and welding side of things, construction's not as cut, which is totally okay. Um, so we know that next year when we plan, we have kids that want to take carpentry and trades. Um, that is something that Angie and I have discussed in our team and talked about how we can have students have that opportunity because they don't right now. Um, the same thing with loyal students.
019classes that we have for those students maybe at small engines or some auto mechanics. Those two classes going into the 26th 27th school year who will love to share more um that doesn't just fall into that up to the high level maths to some of the science courses. Um and then obviously business science and a um the good thing is is that we offer some similar classes in both districts. Um the really good thing is that we have different opportunities. So, how can we utilize virtual options or transporting these kids back and forth throughout the school day within a reason so they're not missing? They have this 15-minute drive, 10, 15 minute drive. How can they ensure they're getting, you know, we have 3 minutes between periods? We can't transfer from loyal to green within
0203 minutes with our bell schedules. How can we make sure that our kids back and forth? Um, so as we as we continue to move forward, we'll continue to work with our own individual schools as far as the Greenwood kids. Add work kids to get them where they are. though I will continue to look below is get what they are. Um and then when we get kind of closer probably to the end of April or May and we actually sit down with students and like schedules and finalizing things that is where we can start to look at okay if I think one example is like political science. It's a class that we don't offer. It's not social studies class. We have kids here in in Greenwood that would love to take that class. How can
021we facilitate that? So we work with our staff to say you know we have the technology to do it. Do we necessarily have to transport them back? No. you know, there may be days, lab days that we have to move. Um, but then so we use that as an option for kids. I think when we do scheduling, it's very hard typically with our seniors to find course offerings that one align with their career goals, two interests them. Um, the worst thing I I hate doing is putting in a kid in the class that they have no interest in being in. Then the teacher hears about that and all a sudden those kids have no interest in being here and you can imagine what that means. So, I think if we can work together to expand
022opportunities for kids that we don't have, we'll continue to do that. Whe that is physically moving kids back and forth or creating spaces in our in our uh schools to do it virtually. Um clearly certain classes align to that. Um some do not, but the more we can grow and expand it, the more opportunities we have for kids and better education. So, we will come back in April with more of a finalized plan. I don't expect to move 100 kids a day, but if we have pockets of 20, 25 kids, whatever it may be, I think that's doable. I think that's exactly what the opportunity we have by working together is one, we allow kids more opportunities. We also give teachers a little bit more freedom to specialize, be able to teach classes that maybe
023are in their interest instead of teaching the whole. So, if we can do that, it's a good point. It's good for our staff and obviously our students are going to succeed because we have already good any questions. So this may be too early for question here but um you talked some combination of virtual meetings. So would it be certain days of the week? there would be some type of structure to that virtual certain days and class days and other days. >> Yeah, I I would like this like this spring we'll try to look at. So, um having taught that class in the past, I'd like probably the first chunk of that class is very important that there's some very specific tasks you have to complete and it's kind of thorough to go through. But once
024you kind of get through the basics, that's where kids are at the beginning of a problem. They have to solve it and it's very independent for a small group. that is the time we can say okay maybe it's Monday Wednesday Friday we're going to see them in oil if they're coming over maybe it's Tuesday Thursday Thursday is interesting and I think that's going to be up to the instructor and obviously working with myself for make sure that space to do that but I think we can be flexible with that um set a schedule but if there's a time we're in the middle of the project at the end of the trimester and they need to be in green for a week then then that's what we'll have to do about transportation I think like I
025hear the transportation questions um moving someone every day is is it's difficult. We got to find a person um everybody in a small school everybody wears a lot of hats. So how can we minimize that while not decreasing the level of instruction? Obviously we know that the best instruction is probably standing in front of kids teaching them. Um but I think we can capture a lot of that through virtual learning and allowing these kids to work at their pace so they can learn that stuff because some some content allows you to do that. You may not need someone standing over your shoulder the whole time, but you do need someone there to constantly talk. I think we've all experienced so students should come to get prepared for that. We're entering a world where they may
026not maybe thank you. >> Thank you principles and counselors for working on this. Any questions or comments from the public at this time if you want to mash that you've done here you want to pick you want to guarantee that they can match but I don't know if you're ready to do that yet or not well I'm just depending on the selected scenario that can change very considerably believe. So the next task force meeting they'll be looking at scenarios below have them figured out I would not think we could wait at least until we're more closer to the final scenario. We could we could at least I guess we could ask if there's I'm not aware of that policy anywhere. See if not I'm just not aware of it. So, I think we could at
027least ask to see if that if that's actually policy worthy or if that's just practice history. I'm not sure. I've never seen in the policy. I kind of think though like regardless of what scenario we end up with whether it's Google whatever I still want the class and like the student experience to be the same like I don't think we should say okay well it's okay if they have an hour and a half bus ride because it's only because it's a building or student or whatever you know like I think what trying to get out what Nick was asking about shouldn't matter what the building scenario is as far as uh class sizes. I think we could find out a little bit more and I agree with Joe. I don't know if there's a policy
028out there. there's probably kind of a unwritten rule of hey this is this is kind of where we're at with the with the majority of kids in the class and even the minority of students before you're you're not offering a class anymore. So I think those are things that we can talk about in April. uh they'll have better numbers and and schedule of what classes are looking like they're running and I think that would be a good time to kind of look at that. I don't want to offend anybody by saying this, but I just want to I'm just recollecting a conversation that was had maybe a year ago. And that conversation prior to the vote that we had last April was and it was said, it doesn't matter how far our kids travel, we
029want them to have the best education. And that was said by people. And I don't I don't disagree. I know that I can assume that where my kids live won't have that long a bus ride. I don't live on the outside of one district or the other. So, personally, I I can't say that I I know how you feel cuz I won't. Regardless, it could be a short bus ride. But I just want to remind the board that before we put any policy in place, the number one priority that we said was student education. So, that we have to remember moving into this that we said we were looking at more opportunities, better opportunities, the best education for our kids regardless of travel. So, I just want to make sure that that's still our focus.
030I don't disagree. I wouldn't want my child on a bus for a long period of time, and I don't want my child shoved in a classroom with 30 kids either. So, I get it. I just want to make sure that we're thinking about the best education for our kids and what that looks like before we put a hard and fast number on something. >> I agree with you, Crystal. Uh I also would like to see maybe you're talking to bus service and staff what is in each district so long as some kid is on the bus before we set the restriction that we're already not fighting by I guess is what I'm thinking. I would I would be curious to see what's the longest hit each district and kind of basing going to tell us
031like if this is what we recommend this is what the bus route scenarios could be or anything like is that part of it? I would think that would be the bus company figuring out because they know where their routes cross, they know or are cross or are on the same, you know. So, you talk about um how long students are on a bus. I in just talking to who lives in Derek, I know they try to keep it at at the most at an hour and an hour or an hour five. So um and just from when they leave driving the bus um it is it's within that happen. So, and just remember long to me could be 20 minutes, long to somebody else could be 50 minutes, right? It all depends on the threshold
032too, right? So, keep that in mind. We just need more information once we know what sounds. Um, regarding class sizes, I hear you in large class. One thing I would be concerned about talking about opportunities for kids and you know some of our kids already taught early classes they want to do already. So I understand core classes through math science you have a lot of overwhelmed teachers too many talk teachers but but what about all the talk classes things like that all of a sudden you're capping it at a certain level but you have one the 26th person wants to give them 25 I think that could be discussion you know the hard fast lock in thing that you might have a student that wants to teach and see if you can get them into
033class >> I think in check in possibly a the numbers get to be a safety issue in some instances. Uh I do believe classes are ran uh every other year. So this would be like a college where you would your juniors and seniors would obviously get first choice and then you know if you don't get something as a sophomore you still have an opportunity to get it as a junior senior. >> I would also think with any kind So, is there anything else that we need to put together for the plan? We have the minimal done at this point. I don't know that there's anything pressing right now. I mean, we will obviously we'll have a school name in the near future. Um, and then it and then really the biggest part is the cons
034the transition plan that the joint task force is working on and going to bring to the joint board hopefully in May. So the organization of the district in how it would organize at the at the onset 2028. That's the that's really the meat and potatoes. >> I recess. I'll make a motion to go into close session.
