pmpvms is joining us today sammy took first out of 688 entries in the district she then went on and took first place in the state of wisconsin out of 4 825 students and she then went on to take 23rd place out of the 68 000 entries in the nation for her writing [Applause] so it made sense to us with memorial day coming up that we wanted to invite sammy here and ask her to read her essay for us how can i be a good american when i think of america i think of a tree our ancestors started with foundational roots and over the past 245 years we have come together to make in my opinion the best country in the world how can america got this way because of all the great people that have

contributed to our countries over the years how can i be a good american and leave a legacy for the future generations to me a good american is someone who does their part in living up to their potential accepts people for who they are and appreciates our freedoms one important way i can be a good american is to live up to my potential and use the gifts and talents that i've been blessed with we all can contribute to our society in some way regardless of our age gender or abilities when we use all the gifts and talents we have been given america becomes better as a whole for some people they are made to be in the military engineering or banking others are made to be in the medical field teaching or agriculture we all have

unique talents that we can contribute to our society another way i can be a good american is by accepting people for who they are just like every individual branch on a tree appears different each person in america looks different has different opinions interests strengths and weaknesses when we all come together and celebrate our unique qualities we create a strong unified country appreciating all the freedoms that the people appreciating all the freedoms and the people have helped keep them is also a large part of being a good american the united states military has fought for these freedoms so i feel that we should never forget the sacrifice and commitment they have made to our country i personally have many family members who have served or currently serve in the military each day when i stand for

the pledge of allegiance i think of their hard work and dedication that has given us so many freedoms in the end i feel america is another word for opportunity opportunity to live up to our potential accept people for who they are and appreciate our freedoms by doing all these things they help me to be a good american citizen so sami is an 8th grader at parkview and her mom wanted me to make sure to mention instead sammy that uh pat falk always does this activity in sixth grade with rolling hills and so sammy said she remembered that and reached out to pat who helped her with um make sure that she got the essay turned in for submission this time so we want to give a shout out to pat too congratulations congratulations wonderful lesson

that was wonderful congratulations president weeble house i can see it and then we also want to welcome two of our students from the it help desk they are here with bridget slayman who is the help desk manager here in the district and she's going to go ahead and introduce the young men who are with us today hello no it's on um so i know most of you guys via email i've set up your chromebooks you've probably reached out to me via email so hello thank you um so i am the it help desk manager here at the district so i work with these students and also all of the district to get chromebooks and all of that um i have two of my students here ethan winkelmann and andrew bloom so i'm going to just

explain a little bit of what this program is and then i'm going to kick it over to them so it's an i.t academy partnership it's a capstone qualifier for them as part of their i.t academy requirement to get their certificate we have them interview for the positions and they have real life skills and it has them gain like an appreciation for the ground level operations so that they see what you know a real job at it is so what is shield it is the students helping i.t and educational leaders desk so those are my current interns i will go to them in a minute so how was it developed so in 2017 we initiated the one-to-one chromebook program here at the high school um i was hired to help run that program so thank you

for doing that um so uh basically we needed to help to repair those mhs tpp devices so that the students can get a faster turnaround so basically what happens is i train them on how to take apart their chrome the chromebooks and get them turned around we have a partnership with dell that sends us the parts and then they work on the devices so they are getting the hands-on which most of them have already built their own computer so them taking apart a chromebook is not that hard for them um so we did help hold a naming contest and they voted and that's how the shield name was developed we do work directly with the it academy teacher danny marzal i take about three to six students per semester to help me during the random

blocks that i have so i have two kids for a couple blocks and then normally it's one per block um so just to highlight two of our former students sean and dominic both are mhs graduates and they worked through the shield program and they are now full-time employees with the uh district so they did higher within um they both attended wctc and majored in cyber security dom just graduated last weekend um so they domino's sql programming sean brings all the other help desks um they're at two of our elementary school two of our elementary schools so i'm just gonna say that i have five current students andrew's going to uw madison for engineering he was with me also his junior year ethan's going to uw-whitewater for cyber security he also worked for me during junior

year i have colton and max both attending wctc for cyber security and i have jake who's also going to whitewater for cyber security so i'm going to kick it over to andrew and ethan all right so first off i'm going to be going over what we do during the school year and then i'm going to kick it off to andrew to um tell you what what they do during the summer because bridget does hire one or two students over the summer to help around with various projects around the district so during the school year it's mainly running the help desk so we have our assigned blocks um or times i guess so i'm there two maybe three times a day depending on the day um and when the student reaches out to us they'll come

up to the help desk and they'd be they will tell us hey my chromebook's not turning on and it's our job to go figure out why so that's like troubleshooting and then go and fix it um so normally some of these are just small fixes we can just do right at the window some of them actually require us to change out multiple components of the internals of the computer just to keep it simple and not boring to death with all the terms and everything um yeah because that could get very confusing very fast um and then we after that is done we handed off the bridget she'll write down the schedule of the student that brought the chromebook in and then we go out and deliver the chromebook at the beginning of a block um

so they have it it's so they have it during the school day uh normally depending on what the issue is it's normally a one to two day turnaround which is pretty quick to my standards because normally when you go to like a traditional help desk or something it's going to take a couple weeks because they just have a backlog of stuff but having the three to six members of the it academy helping out really does help with that turnaround time um yeah and i'll kick it off to andrew right so um as ethan was saying before a lot of the stuff over the summer is a lot more project-based so the main kind of goal of the summer is to get everything ready for the um next school year and the students coming in so

a big project that we work on over the summer is all the new chromebooks so like last um summer we worked on getting new chromebooks for some of the elementary schools and then as well as the new freshman students so we unboxed all the chromebooks set up or wired all the carts labeled all of them started all of them by school and then brought them to the respective schools so along with that while it's based at the high school summer interns also get to move throughout the entire district working on different projects so last summer we refreshed a lot of the ipads and all the kindergarten classrooms and as well other things we work on the summer is kind of maintenance-based things so we image a lot of laptops computers replace anything that might need

replacement just making sure that everything's ready to go for the next school year right so my question is what i've learned from shield so along with a lot of device based like technical skills i've also learned a lot of lifetime skills so like from some of those projects over the summer a lot of things based with efficiency productivity organization making sure that i'm getting things done in time and intently matter and then from the school year more learning things such as like working with others um not only like on a project but working with others like helping them so if a teacher has a problem inside their classroom it's like how do i help them in a way that they can understand and kind of make sure that like um everything will go well along

with this kind of communication along with that idea and then um yeah so i'll be your question yeah [Music] all right so my question was how is it how is the shield desk prepared me for the future um so it's really customer based because it is a customer service job so you have to be polite to the customer even though if they are mean to you just you kind of have to take it sit back and be like okay how can i troubleshoot this situation before i go to the chromebook how do i calm them down how do i just make sure that they are pleased um sometimes it doesn't always work but then then again we have other it staff there to handle the situation if it does get out of handle which normally

it doesn't um so it's more just prepared me it's just customer service skills how to talk to people how to communicate well how to just in general be a good employee and how to just yeah be a decent friend basically to the people who come up to the desk for questions and problems so anyone have any questions for them or me otherwise that's it how uh how many new chromebooks do you guys have to set up uh depends on the year i believe this year we have about like six pallets of chromebooks so it's about 600 chromebooks that have to get set up and delivered to it's 856 i believe is the exact number then i was off by a couple hundred but it seemed like 600. do you know how many chromebooks you're responsible

for in the district uh so us interns are only required to help out with uh the high school now if there is a backlog of work to do at any of the other schools um those it members will bring the chromebooks to us and we will fix them for them just to get them off their plate and back to the students as quickly as possible so you guys are kind of a big deal right just a little bit yeah congratulations awesome thank you so to paint the picture for you there's a like a desk did that we have a picture in the school that students take their computers to and say help and that's you guys it's right behind all of us behind the two of them it's yeah oh yeah so they walk up

to the window and then they i open the window or they open the window and they ask their question and then we get it turned around and then we find them in their classroom so it's a great resource and we're grateful to have you guys there thank you much for what you do good job guys nice job all right thank you ethan and andrew for joining us tonight and all the work you do [Applause] thanks also bridget for being here okay so we are going to back up to citizens comments as a reminder um we take items that are on the agenda i see everybody's here for sel which is great on the agenda craig will be our timer you do have three minutes per citizen comment he'll give you a heads up as you

get close but we're going to go ahead and start with mark summers if you want to come up and make sure you're speaking well into the microphone for us they want to wait till after oh okay well i'll give them something to applaud hopefully all right so uh we see that sel is on the agenda tonight as an action item to vote and look to purchase materials from castle and the implementation so why don't we look a little bit about where it comes from and the denial of critical race theory which really comes through an sel because that's the way it was designed according to castle the main vendor for this curriculum that we're looking to use the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply knowledge skills and attitudes to develop

healthy identities manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals feel and show empathy for others establish and maintain supportive relationships and make responsible and caring decisions based on this principle the proponents of sel call for focusing less on academic content and knowledge in schools and more on cultivating students attributes mindsets values and behaviors sel activists tell parents that their product is transformational tool that will stimulate greater economic or sorry academic achievement and personal fulfillment for students many academic experts however argue that the evidence supporting these claims is shallow and that sel presents tremendous risks to students psychological development violates students privacy by collecting personal data often without parents consent and you can look that up for um the curriculum that we're looking to use for k through our k through sixth it says that that's

voluntary about notifying parents and seeks to mold children into the type of human being the government deems most useful to the economy society and the state do parents disagree with their children being responsible empathetic and emotional emotionally mature no of course not parents typically view themselves as the primary moral educators of their children these those values are taught by family and religion parents expect public schools to teach their kids basic academic disciplines like math english history and science sel attempts to replace family and religion with a government-endorsed morality or morality curriculum with the ultimate objective of filling the void of secularism in public schools that my friends is indoctrination mark 15 seconds all right scl by castle also lists several critical race theory terms and its five core competencies with equity focus including cultural competency

diversity inequity equity racial equity and inclusion inclusive psychological manipulation of a student's values and thinking is found in the self-awareness core competency with the explanation awareness of beliefs mindsets and biases and how they influence one's behavior i'm asking the school board to say no thank you next we have kim i'm going to say your name last name wrong kui thank you okay my name is kim kui can you hear me yes okay i'm here to speak for the benefits of sel and let me get to the right page i'm an advocate for seo i have been in communication with joe betain an elementary school counselor for section elementary he teaches sel every other week to the students for 30 minutes the goal of sel are to problem solve manage emotions develop positive self-esteem achieve personal

goals communicate with others feel and show empathy establish and maintain supportive friendships and make reasonable decisions this is what our school teaches these are the goals of our school district they utilize second step program for certain resources but not all of them they do not use any of their anti-racism or anti-bias materials also known as transformative sel the benefits for sel outweigh any of the unfounded fears that this district is teaching at crt in the form of seo a large-scale scale study was published in 2011 involving the use of scl and found that students who had sel interventions increased their academic performance by 11 percentile points compared to those who did not participate in the intervention students who participated in sel showed improved classroom behavior increased ability to manage stress and depression had better attitudes

about themselves others and their schools columbia university center for cost benefit analysis conducted a research study on six prominent sel programs they found that sel interventions showed an average return on investment of eleven dollars for every one dollar spent i hope we can see that the value in the sc sel program and that is needed now maybe more than ever when emotional intelligence and mental health is a core value in this community thank you thank you kim next i have karen tilicky thank you for letting me speak i would have to ditto everything that mark had to say as well as i also did read the the benefits that the previous person actually talked about as well however i would have to disagree with her in the sense that it creates a group think you

lose creativity and individuality the whole from the very the student that gave her nice essay just listening to her you could tell how she so loves this country and i give my take is if you love this country it is truly a nationalism that that young lady emitted so i guess with that it's really a choice over nationalism versus globalism in the indoctrination of having something like if we're so broken like why are we doing this because that would be my question that you need to think about is why do we need to change the curriculum to an seo are we broken and if we are how long have we been broken because why haven't we all been informed about how broken we are to change this curriculum and i think if we're i if

we were broken that long then every one of us is some piece of brokenness if that's the case so our curriculum we created a great school we create great things and in order for us to continue to create great things why are we scratching everything to actually create something different that's divisive and it's controversial why are we going there that would be my question for you i really want you to really contemplate and discern this because there are a lot of parents maybe on both sides but i do feel that if we really think about it as the look of the loss of the individualism that i think would um create less thus in like productive people because they're not doing what their gifts are and that's what that young lady had to speak about

and that is so important and that is the american dream we need to keep that 15 seconds karen thank you thank you karen i have max learn that's enough okay sorry oh there you're you're good you're all good if i can just get them vertically challenged here thank you for allowing me to speak educational equity leadership series offers to teachers through network a website that collaborates with wisconsin department of instruction and is federally funded through grants from the individuals with disabilities education activism now they are uh speaker is a charlene carruthers and if you're not familiar with her her latest book is unapologetic a black queer and feminist mandate for radical movements now this session available to the wisconsin teachers promised to provide a playbook for educators who are interested in or are already committed

to social justice and educational transformation ms carruther's comment on crt sal is very disturbing and i quote i can't tell you for sure crt is not the most radical thing to come out wait until you hear what we really think what we really believe in i'd rather not sel crt is one of the worst programs to be introduced to the public school system and in order to do that in order to change and transform or change a society or culture you have to go after your most vulnerable people and who would that be that would be our children you need a pusher a patsy unknowing accomplices and victims your pusher is your curriculum director your patsy would be your indoctrinated teachers or counselors or psychologists your unknowing accomplices would be your administration and school board

members who approve this particular curriculum now i'm not i'm not throwing shade on you i'm just telling you the way it's presented to you on paper it looks really quite good and every student is going to succeed but it has an evil underbelly equity is the ultimate in racism the word simply means that some people are inferior and capable of competing as individuals and must be given that which they did not earn and which was taken from others people are inherently unequal in terms of ability and ambition i cannot do a simple algebra problem if you gave it to me will be here until midnight however i can create the most beautiful ballets and dances and create stories it's just 15 seconds max thank you it is just as i said america is about individual

equality not group equity and congratulations to the two new school board members thank you max and last i have michelle collins hi um i am just kind of asking an open-ended question i know this isn't a dialogue but i think it would be most helpful helpful for me and many parents for the board or [Music] the curriculum curriculum and instruction member to draw a line and let parents know where they stand where you all stand on the issue of sel because i mean i don't know where all of you stand on what you think is appropriate other than this board voted against that it was not appropriate for crt to be in the district while that was voted on it is in the district and it trickles down and not everything can be seen but

it is evident that it's there and also um with all of the gender issues which will come into sel that is another issue that parents are concerned about and i think it would be most helpful and create a little bit more clarity for parents to know where you all stand on those things if you are able to do so and say so so thank you thank you michelle as soon as i can re-login okay we are going to move along to our consent agenda i am looking for consent and the approval of school board meeting minutes for april 25th 22 as well as special meeting minutes from the month of may 2nd 9th and 16th i'm looking for approval voucher numbers 137 017-137-377 in the amount of 2.1 million in change and receipts for april

0442022 totaling 1.8 million in change as well as for the consent and approval of the october 2022 mhs banned trip to chicago do i have any questions or comments hearing none they are approved by consent so we will move down to our student learning committee update jerry okay um in our meeting we discussed our social study curriculum and documents which is going to be addressed when we get to action items we we discussed our sel curriculum process which will be discussed when we get to action items and we also discuss that with the we are working very hard on our website so that the curriculums are out there for parents to see they are able to go and get examples of what's going on so that there is clearness of what is happening in the

classrooms we just approved the banned overnight field trip we looked through neola policies there were no chests no excuse me there were no changes that were suggested and that pretty much we had a very quick meeting because we had another meeting following it we were done in record time okay and then we'll move to personnel committee update thanks steve um thanks erica so i guess i'll start with the uh uh some bad news um our condolences to the porter family um janet porter is a 29 year employee at masd and uh 1993 to 2012. so uh we're sorry about the loss for the porter family we have some uh service recognition steve if you don't mind i'd like to read these absolutely 40 years of service rebecca bockhuber pretty amazing she's a great person god

bless her 25 years of service julie hanish craig heuserman shannon korth nicole naparella tina otto jody pease renee shallow terry weber and in 20 years of service sandra beckwith kyle barton pamela lang justin last william plant candace schroeder and annette strickler so very very very happy about those people awesome people thank you steve you want to go to the support staff hiring absolutely for food service we are still looking for a food service assistant for four hours at the high school and also a three-hour food service assistant at prairie view a food services assistant slash cashier four and a half hours at the high school and a part-time van driver driver for five and a half hours we're also looking for three custodial positions limited term full full-time limited benefit positions at the high school

and also a special education eight at the high school and a student monitor at the elementary thanks steve uh teaching hiring update all right not not changed too much from the last time we discussed it at the personnel committee meeting um we're still looking at hiring at uh big bend for a 4k halftime position an mhs interventionist position a parkview stem teacher clarendon 5th grade teacher two 512 math coaches mhs business and marketing teacher a math teacher at the high school as well and a preview second grade teacher and um just as a note for today um stephanie krenz is moving on so we'll be hiring an assistant principal at the high school pretty amazing we have 51 applicants for the fifth grade job it's awesome absolutely substitute fill rates and local starting salaries all

right um there's a good deal of information that we were able to gather from toc uh the teacher fill rate is pretty comparable in terms of other districts and they they report that is good from their perspective obviously that's tough on teachers administrators families and students teachers in call did provide several districts information in terms of how much they pay for subs interestingly they did say that they are somewhat reluctant to share which district is offering what simply because they're concerned that by sharing that freely it just causes people to continuously up their raises and up their raises and up the raises that being said i know a good number of the hr directors in other spots and we do share that information and so we are we are pretty comparable in that regard so

um the the biggest area where we struggle is with uh with uh aid aid uh substitute teachers someone to come in and provide that support that's the area that we struggle with the most and so when um when we when we're struggling with with subs oftentimes what ends up happening is is we we have to pull people out of positions like guidance counselors interventionists that would be doing that work and assign them to a classroom sometimes we have administrators teaching in a classroom and sometimes at least for a brief period after uh from this fall winter time frame we had district office that was headed to buildings to support as well so when we don't have the the teachers in place it does create a series of we we get the job done but it

it does present its own challenges thank you steve all right thanks and we will move into finance and facility committee update we reviewed current budget tom has us right on target as usual um tom presented a case for some prepayment debt that's an action item that uh we'll bring up later um we looked at a couple transportation routes that had uh very low attendance so we've got a action item for that to reduce two routes we also have an action item to increase the dawson transport rate and we went over uh next year's budget um and tom gave us scenarios for that where we're looking at there and we also discussed using a collection service for uh unpaid fees anything to add time okay then we're going to move right into action items first we

have appointments resignations and retirement for the appointments we've got alyssa soderman who's coming on board as a 512 math coach that'll be district-wide paige allen kindergarten teacher at clarendon elementary kelly pearson a science grade teacher at the high school and abigail olsen and speech and language pathologist and that's district-wide um as i mentioned earlier resignation of stephanie krenz associate principal at mcgonagall high school and um and i'm michael burger administrative assistant at parkview middle school retired i'd like to make that motion second i have a motion in a second to accept all three of the appointments resignations and retirements any discussion or comments really going to miss anna go ahead he's going to miss anna and uh michael's burger right and so i i want to also uh give my accolades to anna so um

when i was principal at rolling hills when we opened up uh cherry was our first pto president but then anna michelsberger served as a pto president for us there and then when i got to high school to be principal she served as a pto president there as well and so not only has she been heavily involved in our schools as a parent as a volunteer but also done a fantastic job as an administrative assistant at parkview middle school for the last number of years so we want to thank her and wish her and her husband david best wishes and happy healthy retirement all right thank you so we do have a motion in a second all those in favor say aye aye any opposed motion carries next we are looking for the um the approval

of a resolution authorizing the transfer of funds the establishment of an acro escrow account with the respect to and the defeasance of certain of the taxable general obligation refunding bonds that are dated december 1st 2022 all right so everything's summarized as resolution 2022-01 so we're looking for approval of that resolution there so we talked about this in depth last monday i will take questions if not we can move towards action here you need emotion do well we can take emotion yeah first and then discuss what do you want to do motion to accept okay thank you a motion i will second any questions or discussion for tom for this prepayment of debt defeasings okay hearing none all those in favor say aye aye any opposed motion carries transportation for a route reduction okay so i

at the meeting last monday i brought forth our ridership rate uh accounts that we had we took a a week of counts in january and another week of counts in late april and we have two routes that we are pretty sparsely utilized by by our students the first one is for eagleville elementary we're looking to eliminate that route we feel that we can consolidate those students onto an existing eagle bill route so we're not really looking to eliminate services just to reduce the route and save money the second route is for st john's lutheran that is we transport students that attend private schools transportation can come in the form of a parent contract a yellow school bus or a private taxi slash transportation service so the the cost of the transportation for that uh that

st john's route is twenty two thousand dollars and when we look at the number of kids who are riding that route where it's about nine per day at the most um that exceeds 150 percent of the average cost of our students so any time that you offer transportation to private schools which we have to by law when we when that cost you wouldn't create a route for just one student or for three students the average cost for those one or three students would just be well in excess of your average cost per per per student so when that average cost exceeds 150 percent you don't have to offer transportation anymore not in the form of yellow school bus anyway so we will move the tran uh parent contracts for those students but we do everything

that we can to get kids onto yellow school buses we just would no longer dedicate one sole route for st john's students if that makes sense so we're just looking for action on the reduction of those two routes i'll make a motion and we do reduce the bus route so we have a first from craig and the second from joel any other questions i'd like to i'd like to know the maybe a cost savings involved tom the 22 000 per route okay yeah thank you emotionally consolidating in the fairing contract for st oh you need two separate motions if you make it as one that's fine i'd like to make a motion that we uh reduced the bus routes and what was the other one steve okay move to parent move to parent contracts thank

you so it's only is you don't want to do both was that i was thank you okay so we have a motion a second and a second any comments or discussion questions on that okay all those in favor say aye aye any opposed okay motion it carries and then we'll move into the transportation rates for next school year 22 23. all right so we are looking to just establish a new rate of pay for for all of our routes that we have with dousman transport the finance committee is recommending a three percent increase so that's um that's where that's the recommendation of any questions i can answer them right now i'd like to make a motion that we go ahead with the three percent increase for dousman transport i have a motion a second either

questions or comments okay all those in favor say aye aye any opposed motion carries we have the 20 22 23 calendar modification so as we discussed last month and at the personnel committee due to the various different municipalities using our elementary schools as election sites no problem in august for a low turnout primary but on november 8th a much higher turnout election expected and so we are recommending and the personnel committee approve that there will be no school 4k through six on tuesday november 8th i would like to make that motion a second okay vital second any comments or questions okay all those in favor say aye aye any opposed okay motion carries we have the second step curriculum teacher resource purchase and christine and stephanie are here so i'm actually going to switch six

and seven if i could before i ask you to adopt the purchase of the resource i'll discuss the k6 sel curriculum so throughout the course of the year christine has come to student learning committee to update the committee on the work that she has been doing with our k-6 counselors in the district just to give a recap first of all please do keep in mind that the sel curriculum that we are asking for approval for is our curriculum written in our district we're not asking you to adopt something that is a nationwide curriculum or even a statewide curriculum it was written by employees in our district for our students here in mukwonago using the state competencies that are recommended for sel curriculum this is not new to mukwonago this is not new that we are

teaching seo curriculum we've been teaching sel curriculum for quite some time in our elementary schools when christine came in her position as director of pupil services she actually was looking for consistency in what was taught k-6 and transparency and what was taught k-6 i'm not sure we could have sat in front of you four years ago and told you exactly what was taught for an seo curriculum in k-6 in all of our buildings this process has actually streamlined and made a situation where we can speak to what is happening in kindergarten for social emotional learning through sixth grade um we're not asking you to adopt one resource where we just take what they've written on a national level and say this is this is what we're teaching our kids when we ask for the purchase

of the second step curriculum we're actually asking for a resource so that we can use the pieces that we find that we should be using here in mukwonago and that our process and our sel curriculum involves such things as goal setting responsible decision making problem solving conflict resolution communication skills and working with others which i think is what the shield gentlemen were saying that they've learned in their process through the i.t academy and working working for the shield system so we are here tonight to ask for approval of our k-6 sel curriculum i would like to make the motion to pass that i'll second that motion okay so i have a motion and a second if anyone has any comments or questions that they would like to ask feel free i'll start [Laughter] veto i

was just curious is that is that a legal thing do we have to teach something in regards to seo so the state gives us competencies that they recommend that we are teaching we do have in our so i guess let me finish my thought so no the only standards and subject areas that we are required to teach in the state of wisconsin would be math science history geography writing and reading but clearly we choose to teach many other things to make well-rounded students and so the state provides us those competencies i don't see any ecrt in this curriculum i think they did a great job going through this and reflecting our community's values i clicked on links and i found elmo talking about people being the same and different being different like he was putting

on freckles verses and how they were the same they had hands eyes ears there's also teachings in there what i learned in catholic school the golden rule treat treat each other as you want to be treated that's what i saw in those i looked at the programs the teaching material i saw no crt in this curriculum it was all things i would teach my kids thank you i would like to echo that as well i diligently went through and clicked on everything and every link and read through it all and it's been it's a nice curriculum that we put together tailored for our community in our community's beliefs because we don't believe in having crt in our classrooms and i appreciate the work that you guys put into that because it's great to have that

how not to be a jerk and all of that great stuff that we want our kids to learn and we want that reinfor reinforced in schools so thank you i would echo as someone who has gone through the curriculum that stephanie i appreciate you sharing like written in-house by our staff for community so we're not purchasing a box curriculum um i've also gone in and sat in some of these classrooms and it's a lot of like how to control your temper or like good good practical things but things just i mean there's bullies there's how to act care tell it's how to be a good friend i mean this is in fourth grade things that i think are very important i do believe and have confidence in our district and on our staff that their

priority as well as ours as a board is that parents are the primary source of morals and religion and all of the things we don't want to be that primary source we want to make sure that we are educating our students in a way that is beneficial without being or taking over that parental role that's not our place but we do see like a statistic was mentioned earlier that through sel through emotional health we do see students achieve and that is what we are primarily about is making sure students learn grow and achieve and in no way taking away any sort of parental roles from them my belief i know gender was mentioned i don't see gender in any of these discussions i don't know if anyone else says anything i just want to add

to if parents if you see something that you don't like please contact the teacher and in my short experience here anytime i've addressed administration it's been com it comes back very quickly and they respond very very well we've talked about the scl crt for years it seems i think we should put it to kind of bed um that that are what we believe in as our homegrown sel and we're good to go i should mention too that i think another strength in our district uh is that our k-6 uh sel curriculum is taught by our counselors and so it is not that we're um that we've got this curriculum document and then every teacher throughout the district has to interpret that document and figure out how to teach that christine works very closely with our

counselor shout out to them for working on this curriculum and christine for doing that throughout the course of the year but they're the ones to deliver that and christine has regular meetings with those counselors to have those discussions i think it's worth worth noting that the reason we have this and this is for hopefully every hopefully everybody that can hear it online the reason i think the reason we have this is because we there's issues there's issues with behavior there's issues with things that the school probably isn't used to dealing with so we're trying to figure out a way to minimize the issues it's great to be able i want to say it all the time that's a parenting issue that's a parenting issue that's a parenting issue but the reality is not all parents

are as involved as others so it puts a school in a unique position where you have to what do you do you have to do to try to do something i know a lot of people are against it and none of us want our kids being indoctrinated into stuff that we don't that we don't think is right and stuff like that but there are kids out there that are not that need help being being taught right from wrong sadly so and they have to interact with the other kids and they have to be in school with the other kids so we're trying to figure out a way to make it happen and make it work that's the it's the best we can do um i know i know these guys are doing a great job

and they know they know where the community stands so it's not like it's not like there's this nefarious people in the back it's stephanie i know her she she's pointing things out to me that are in the books so i don't believe she's the she's the person in the back trying to do this crazy stuff that everybody's afraid of that we're all hearing on the news so um i trust her i trust her judgment she does a really good job if anything slips through we're not going to catch everything that's why we need the parents if anything slips through if any links slip slip through we want everybody to be involved so that we can we can all work together to get this done the right way anyone else i do have a motion and

a second on the table so all those in favor say aye aye any opposed okay motion carries and then we'll step backwards to the step two curriculum yeah thank you so then following that one of the resources identified that we would like to purchase to help supplement the curriculum that we've written is the second step curriculum that would be a total purchase of thirty seven thousand seven hundred eighty six dollars and fifty cents i make motion to purchase that curriculum second i have a motion and a second on the table and that is for a five-year purchase access to it any questions or comments regarding second step do we only have access to the curriculum that we've selected there's no other things in there so if there are certain chapters or things that we did

not want to include there's nothing else included in that it's just the k6 i guess i'm not sure what your question is if there's certain there are certain things from that second step curriculum we chose not to include in our homegrown curriculum those items won't be included in the books or the online resources is that we only correct yeah we'll only give students access to the things that we've involved in our curriculum okay yes any other comments or questions okay i have a motion in a second all those in favor of the second step curriculum purchase say aye aye any opposed okay motion carries well you'll move back down to number eight the 712 social studies curriculum documents yeah so in addition um we've been working in the course of the year with along with

the new textbook curriculums for the 712 social studies to provide curriculum documents again to be as transparent as we can about what is happening in our classrooms and so we're looking for approval of those curriculum documents i'll make a motion that we approve i've looked through all of them multiple times second by cherry any questions or comments from anyone yes we gotta do the shared bike um i spent many hours on this and i do have a problem with this curriculum if you click on a few of the links i believe it's called the living room candidate and you file through there there's a lot of negative it's a lot of bias material in there favoring one side over the other which i totally disagree with um there's a lot of social and financial inequities

in there income equalities a lot of things and i couldn't when i was clicking on the links a lot of links i couldn't get into to see the material so i'd have a hard time voting for stuff that i can't read but just based on the stuff i could get into i have a lot of concerns with that dale are you able to point to the link that you're referencing i read i read it as well he showed it to me this morning one of or when we got here what did you call it there's a link called living room okay so this is a unit on if you look at it it's a unit on propaganda so they're going to take you to propaganda to help you point out and learn right like how

to compare what propaganda is and what isn't um i did see this earlier and because it's a unit on propaganda i guess it didn't really bother me because i think it was a good example actually of what propaganda is right but it seemed like the propaganda was geared one way totally one way versus the other so there are other things in addition to the text right so when you look for sources for q3 that link is one part of the sources they have other commercials to look at so we could i mean we could ask to see those maybe they're in the other direction they have the chapter and the lesson so um i don't have a problem with sources as long as we're using them to compare and contrast so i don't know if

there's a way to know the other sources for q3 um again i have a certain level of trust with our staff and how they're building a lot of this i've seen a lot of things that have come through learning committee that people are like no this is horrible but when you see it up against what it's being used to compare can't trust you it actually makes for a very valuable lesson um i suppose we don't have the commercials that are in the text for propaganda techniques so we're teaching students how to see propaganda to be able to notice when it's coming our way i think that's very valuable myself but um valuable if it's going both ways for sure for sure that's what i'm saying is that we do talk about that a lot um

as a district um that the teachers i would say are incredibly well aware that both sides of an issue need to be presented i think that's what's hard when you're opening the links again there's a level of transparency we're trying to give in the documents but it is really hard to open up a link and and know exactly what what the class period looks like and what the standard looks like in connection to that our teachers would be more than happy to answer some questions regarding that and to come to student learning committee and do that but i i do agree with erica sitting with the teachers writing this um you know vito had said before if we're seeing things we don't like in the classroom as parents we need to speak out i do

think that there needs to be a level of trust for our teachers and what they're teaching uh also and um that they're they're aware of what they should be teaching they're very well aware of what they should not be teaching and that they're going to follow through and and teach to the values of the community but but i'm voting on this and i can only go by the material provided to me i understand that so i don't see that in here in the presentation i think it would be hard to see that in curriculum documents sometimes though unless you're in the classroom with the teacher and then there was like a lot of links for the material that i couldn't get into okay i would point out that for that same quarter like quarter one

for these lessons i mean you do see the wisconsin wisconsingobtup.org right next to wisconsindems.org our staff does a really good job of pairing things side by side so even if we can't see it there i mean that's your comfort level that's your judgment call i've been doing this and sitting on learning committee a very long time so i've had the opportunity to see how our staff works and they do work a very they do a good job and work very hard to make sure that they're balancing things i don't think any teacher here in our district wants to be super skewed i don't think they want that is part of them please this is not a this is not a purchase correct correct push hold let go there you go so steve had asked when

this needs to be purchased by when you need approval on this um i mean clearly we're not teaching until september so right so we've got a little bit of time we do so if we table this to give us 30 days to dive in a little bit more into the into it and i'd be more than happy to ask as they would be more than happy to come um some of our teachers to come to students so we committed to those of us who needed or wanted more information we tabled until next month we're not going to hurt anything correct yep do we have do we have anything that i'll tell i've said it before i told this story before when i when my daughter was in when she first started in high school i

read something that got sent home ended up talking to the mr darian the principal having a conversation with the teacher and i was pointing things out and and pointing out where the biases were and they didn't even recognize it until i was pointing it out do we do any of that is there anything out there where we're like hey here this is or is just us the culture of what's going on now forcing them to start to take a look at these things one of the links that he's talking about they they give descriptions of the last two presidents or uh the current president and last president one is very straight line and one is this guy sucks and everybody thought so and it's very very obvious but without somebody actually pointing it out it

doesn't it's the same thing that i had to point out to the teacher who had been doing it and he was legitimately shocked that he's like geez i can't believe i didn't see that is there something that we're pointing out or do we have any training on this or is there is there a thing that other than all of us talking about it it's a great question um we definitely during the writing of this had conversations about um about what's happening in our nation and it's a great question i no i'm going to say i mean yes and no there's nothing formalized definitely that we've done for the teachers to have that discussion but i would say on the other hand that discussion is happening on a regular basis between teacher to teacher and with

the teachers yeah i think our teachers are very very well aware of the values of the community and what what is biased from the perspective of many i think they're very well aware of that i think we talked about the same thing a month ago on a table that and you guys steve you weren't around yet maybe but but i agree that it seemed like some of the authors of some of these articles and such were um very biased in their their opinions and in their writing um but i hope we can trust the teachers to do that i guess i do but there is some bias there no doubt there's the podcast that they use as well that the history this week that's brought up in there and there's one of the videos and

i was trying to find where it was again but i couldn't find it but i will find it and send it to you and it calls out you know it's talking about like and the likely players and it calls out the former president and it just you know it's it was like a joke thing in the podcast but i don't think that's funny i don't you know i don't think that's a great thing i think that's right there and like a brainwashing we don't need our students to be hearing that it would be helpful if those of you that have questions if you could get those to me so i know what teachers to have at student learning committee in june like i said i'm sure they would definitely come and they can address best

um how they're using some of our resources before we get to that we do have a motion and a second on the table already for approval so we either need to vote on that or we need to have an amendment offered if it is friendly if our motion wants because we have been talking about our 712 social studies curriculum for many many many months many months i mean we were talking about this last year when we were going through history books right like you were on that committee like we've been doing this for quite some time so if there is an amendment on the table to push this back another month that that needs to be are another month and that's got to be it because school is coming quickly and we need to get

this approved and i would also add that it's not good practice at the board level to be approving every single resource and document that's being used in a classroom that's not your job now if you have concerns we will be happy to address those the teacher will address it the principal will address it but if you're going to get into those level at that level of minutia we're going to be here for a long long long long time and you simply don't have the time to approve every single activity that we're conducting in a classroom eight schools five thousand students show them that i don't think so you approved the curriculum but not all of the lessons absolutely expressed concerns if parents have concerns they should contact the teacher have those conversations but at this

level you don't want to get into that level of minutia simply impossible i have a question for vito um because you you were on that committee last year and we've worked through all of this and this is this is the same curriculum that we've been working on and do you feel that having sat on that committee and having worked through it and if you would brought any concerns forward to the teachers that they were not addressed in a manner that was acceptable to you i don't know how to answer that yes they yes they they addressed everything and we're very open to making sure that that nobody's pushing to try to do anything that we don't want i guess is the best way i think am i answering your question yes that's that's correct so

an answer to erica um these people have worked for sev again several years to do this and we just went through it on la two mondays ago and there were everyone was allowed to read it and go through it and so i think that in fairness to our administration we need to move forward with this curriculum that another month isn't going to make a difference in what we find carolyn did you have something yeah so i think back to what sean you were saying i mean you asked us for it says in here we'll ask for approval of the written curriculum for these following classes then you provided the curriculum and then we read it so we're just providing our concerns about it the you know and if i see something that's concerning how can

i say yeah well screw it they've been working on it for months before i came on the board so approve it i mean that's so you prove the curriculum yeah but and then we'll address the concerns that you have about a lesson yeah but i'm happy to get down into the minutia that's like i've got all the time in the world well i i want to remind at a board meeting on a monday night we don't get into the nitty-gritty of each individual lesson you approve the curriculum and then outside the board meeting if you have a concern um we'll address it and as a reminder i mean that is what our committee meetings are set up for that's the structure that's how we've been doing it i mean vito was on that last year

dale is on it now we have had the opportunity to address some of the questions even the comment craig that you had recently brought up about some of these resources remembering that the structure of the social studies classes is that a lot of times it's not like you're getting a right and a wrong answer from a student you're presenting them with information they're going to employ the critical thinking that they've been taught and they're going to make an argument and they're going to defend it like this is right or this is wrong they're not going to get uh oh that was wrong it was biased you fail right like the point is for our students to go through the information critical think and come out with their answer and as long as they can defend

their answer well then that's what it is that is why contrary items are necessary so that our students can compare and contrast we have talked about this in length i know you were there we talked about it in length we it's been moved out of committee multiple times now to this full board i want to remind us also that we are a governing body we are not educators that are district administrators that write curriculum we are not management we are not in the day today like sean said if we have issues we can go to our administrators and ask them for clarification we do not live in the weeds we do not live in day to day we are policy we are governance we are approve or not approve so if it's about how the

units are written out if it's about how the questions are handled if we don't like the format of how we teach social studies 712 then that's something that we need to vote down if it's that oh no we like all of that we like the units we like the questions we approve of all of that then we approve and we move on if we have concerns for particular resources because resources aren't curriculum so the links are our resources they're not necessarily curriculum we can address those in the future i know this is a source of angst for a lot of people because it's um it's hard to deal with the uh to kind of shed some light on what sean is talking about when he's when he's saying that is the problem that i had

in that situation was an article from cnn what we're ex what we're thinking we might be able to do is basically be able to screen everything that ever comes out of cnn or has come out of cnn there's going to be some good articles in there that aren't super biased and that are written that they're that that's the resource is the cnn they have a special thing just for schools to use so that's the resource that certain things are approved and they get to go here and pull stuff from there just because we can pull an article or they happen to get something from there that isn't quite in line we we can't go through and read every article this is what eric is saying this week and and sean is we can't we can't

be the screeners of every single thing for every single class and every single grade i mean none of us have that much time but and it's difficult because i don't like it either and i don't like a lot of these things coming through that's where the trust comes in that's where we just have to feel them as they come when something comes when a parent's upset and they talk to the teacher and it works its way up then we address it accordingly but that that one resource that's just one resource that they have is that cnn thing that they that they were able to get it from and who knows how many articles get put in there every single day and from different people and different points of view and all these different things so

as much as i'd like to have ultimate control and be able to go in and go no this is inappropriate this is appropriate it's just an unbelievable amount of information that they that they have to pull from that we just can't do it and it sucks so so remind me because it's been a little while now who is our an original emotion cherry or second art or vice versa okay i got the motion it's been throwing me on the motion second okay so we do have a motion and a second on the table um i feel for those of you new on the board that you haven't had time um but you have had a month so there's been a little bit of time and i know you're new to this but we have been

as a full board working on it for quite some time i am not willing to amend my motion to to table it for another month you have the opportunity if you have resource concerns to still address that but as far as curriculum adoption i'm keeping my motion the same and your second is fine um if it's voted down then it's voted down and we can readdress it but we're going to vote on the original motion on the table any other comments or questions no okay any other comments all those in favor say aye aye any opposed opposed okay seven one motion carries eight one i'm used to being an eight-person board for a little while sorry about that i can count i promise okay superintendent search firm selection so back in december at our full

board meeting on the december 20th of 2021 as a board we accepted sean mcnulty's retirement notice for superintendent which would be effective june 20 june 30th 2023 so the end of next school congratulations sean um after that we began the process of finding a superintendent search firm we started researching and emailing other districts for recommendations of people that they have used we got the whole list that represents the state of wisconsin i was at a conference in january where i talked to some just to get feelers and start talking to the search forms we went out for a request for proposal back in january we received about eight back the personnel committee in february narrowed that down to three firms that we wanted to bring in for interview which is what we've been busy doing

for the whole month of may we brought in three different firms for presentations and interview and tonight as a board we'll take action on selecting a search firm to begin the process of filling um the vacated retirement seat for next school year we have the option as a board if we would like to discuss our three presentations and options in executive session we can do that otherwise we can do that an open session as well and then we can so i would love feedback if there's anyone that feels like we need to go an executive session okay so we'll do all of this in open session um we had three search firms that came in um am i allowed to say the three that they were yes yes so we had bwp that came in

first um we had hya that came in second and then wasb third we spent some good time with them asking questions and i would entertain um a motion i would like to make motion that we move ahead with hiring bwp the first people that were here here okay so i have a motion and i have a second for bwp any comments concerns questions any thoughts to share just to confirm those were the first ones that came in right the first ones okay all those in favor say aye aye aye any opposed hi okay all right motion carries eight to one senior survey number ten so i provided for you a memo with a link to a survey that we would like to provide to all the seniors on june 1st when as we're looking for

data that we can use to improve things in our district and move towards our strategic plan of all students being college and career ready we realized that we were not collecting some valuable information that we'd like to have from our graduating seniors every year that that we can analyze on a different level than test scores moving forward and so a group of high school counselors administrative team both at the district and the building level have been working on putting together this survey that again we would give to all seniors this year on june 1st as they're going to be leaving the building and then we would continue to give the same survey every year so we can start to collect some valuable data for us to use about how to support students moving forward i

read through it and i'd like to make a motion that we approve that survey i have a motion second any comments or questions i thought it looked great i'm anxious to actually see the response too okay anything else all those in favor say hi any opposed motion carries and then we will move down into unfinished business and we'll start with the superintendent report sure real quick uh we i will send an email in the next day or two we need to schedule a our board work session that we were going to have on the facility study the structure of parkview middle school our space constraints at the elementary level those i think were the three main topics that we had and then how we move forward with that process so we're looking at june and
