and community members alike. And whereas the Northern Pines boys hockey team achieved the highest level of success by securing the 2026 championship title, a testament to their perseverance and collective effort. And whereas the accomplishments of this team reflect the support and guidance of their coaches, the encouragement of their families, and the unwavering spirit of the Northern Pines community. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Board of Education proudly congratulates Northern Pines boys hockey team on winning the 2026 state championship. And be it further resolved that we commend the players, coaches, and supporters for their outstanding achievement and for serving as exemplary ambassadors of sportsmanship excellence. And be it further resolved that this board extends its best wishes for continued success in future endeavors both in athletics and academics. In witness whereof this proclamation is hereby
adopted this 27th day of April 2026 from the Northern Pines Board of Education. Do I hear a second? Second. All right, motion second on the floor. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Opposed? Motion carries. Any board members like to add anything before we ask someone to come up? If some of you want to bring it up, bring up trophy, Josh or others, and join them, and then we can send the proclamation with you as well. I would just like to say first off, congratulations, but I think as the proclamation said, it takes a lot, and I see parents here tonight. It's you guys that made this happen, but um I've talked a lot about over my career as a principal and a superintendent that when you put on that jersey or the Pines hockey
sweatshirt, that should mean something, and and this team proved that. They they represented our community, our school, their families, themselves with class and dignity through the whole process. They They were exciting to watch, but they also made us very proud and they're fine young men as well as great hockey players. So, congratulations to them and thank you for coming out. If you'd like to say any words tonight? >> [laughter] >> I know you want the proclamation, you can take that with you cuz it's the board members all did actually sign it and something for your locker room or wherever you'd like to hang it. So, all right? But, congratulations. >> [applause] [applause] >> I know it's a little early, but is there any thoughts for next year? >> [laughter] >> Sounds like that's a young
sir. And we know you have homework to do tonight, so if you don't want to stay, you don't have to stay for the whole meeting by any means. So, you can go when you would like. Thank you for coming out tonight. All right, so then we once it quiet down, we can move on to the district continuous improvement team. If you want to come up and give us a few of your wisdom words. Hi, I'm Carrie. I'm Coleen Hall, with the continuous improvement team. We We think we volunteer each other to do this. So, um just a quick update for what DCIT has been up to for the past year. Um in the fall, we reviewed what we had taken care of in spring of 2025 and we reviewed and revised updated the goals for
the year for from the district level so that they could be then taken down to the different schools and buildings and adopted and modified um to fit the um sort of the populations in each of those schools. Um the winter focus then as we worked on the continuous improvement plan, the winter focus became attendance in our district. And so, one of the goals was attendance and so, we spent a lot of time throughout the winter trying to figure out how to focus and make attendance and the importance of every single day of attendance mean something. And so, we came to looking at family engagement being a big key aspect of that. Um also looking at purposeful people and character strong, some of that SEL curriculum that we've used and seeing how that uh contributes to
grit and perseverance when the students just don't feel like coming back to school if they had missed for whatever reasons. Um and we've also looked at um what it means when you only miss one day. Well, it was only one day, but there's really a lot of things that go on in one day um across the district at Heights. And so, there's a committee that's getting together to sort of do what we call the one day campaign to sort of point out exactly what is going on in a day and how much could be missed. And then finally, um the DCIT was working on an attendance commitments framework to figure out how we are going to uh keep it continuous through all the buildings and have uh guiding documents as we work forward through attendance.
With that, we move into the spring. Um so, we are currently working on an MLSS process that is based on um high quality instruction, strategic use of data, and collaboration. And then from there, that those categories were based on uh behavior, attendance, and academics based on each building. We have come up with a rubric that we are currently working on um aligning that with our MLSS road map to make it more consistent among all the buildings. One of the things that we did in the last meeting was um we went through what each of those rubric pieces were and kind of figured out what the important parts were, what we needed to change, simplify, and then had kind of determined that some of those categories kind of fell in within each other. Trying to simplify
that for staff to understand within all buildings. Again, focusing on that attendance piece that we've continued to work on, but then expanding it into behavior and academics as well. That was pretty much it. Any questions? Just thank you. Thank you. Um I I think the behind the scenes what you don't get to see is the the high level conversation, the planning, the work, the the ability to say things and talk through, but also then actually have it follow through and and have an impact. And I'm really proud to be um seeing what this group has done over the years and leadership, you know, teacher leaders like the two in front of you really play a critical role in that and we're very fortunate that um they they buy in and then they roll up their
sleeves and do the work. So, I appreciate them coming out tonight, but it's also the journey they've been on and how good these two and the others uh the others that are part of DCIT, including the admin, um are really working hard for one focus and that's to help our students maximize their potential. So, thank you. Just have one question on the one day campaign. Are you guys going to do a video on this and how long is the video going to be? I think currently, well, the group has to get together still. There's been some scheduling issues. We've had to cancel a few times, but I think it comes down to the research of what you're missing in one day, the minutes of math, the minutes of ELA, having a visual for parents. But
then, we are going to have other ways to display that for parents to understand what it looks like for one day, five days, 10 days, whatever. Um whether it's information going out in the fall in the packets or posters in the buildings. There's a variety of options, but we just have to create it first. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. All right, so now we have to move on to the board reorganization that we don't do very often, once a year. Um and of course, every year we get a cheat sheet, but uh cheat sheet's always what do we do or say next? So, So, for those of you that haven't gone through this a ton, please look at the blue highlighted section or page and uh let's um try to
reorganize so we can continue to move this meeting forward. So, we'll make it simple. There is a message that came from President current President Payne who's up for re-election tonight. So, if Eric would like to read that, please. I'll share that with the board that's here. Um as you know, I will be absent and excused from the April 27th regular board meeting due to another obligation. I realize that the board will conduct our annual reorganization at that meeting. Therefore, I wanted to communicate with you that if I were to be nominated as board president that evening, I would accept the nomination. At this time, I'm not proposing changing board committee meetings dates and times, but that could be discussion per committee if needed. Additionally, if I were voted in as president, following would be the
board appointments to committees which I would propose. If board members are in agreement with these appointments, this would be no changes to our current committees. Reminder note, one of the duties of the board president is to appoint board members to committees. These appointments do not need a motion and will simply be noted in the minutes of the April board meeting annually. Um Yeah, so the the the committees would remain as they are if general president again, delegates Wasby would be Jen, alternate Chris, um Nick WIAA, and CISA would still be Chris. It's your lead, Jennifer Payne. Okay. All right, so we'll start with the any questions, comments, concerns? All right, let's move forward. Start with the nominations for board president. Would anybody wish to nominate someone as president? I will nominate Jennifer Payne as president.
All right, are there any other nominations? Any other nominations? All right. Any other nominations? Three times. That's right. All right. Well, if there's no other nominations, then Jen Payne is president, right? >> Yes, someone has to make a motion to close the nominations and cast unanimous ballot. I will make a motion to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Jennifer Payne as president. I'll second. All right, motion second on the floor for Jen Payne as president. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Opposed? Jen, if you're watching, >> [clears throat] >> you're now your I'm going to do the same process for each. >> All right. So, is there any nominations for vice president? I would like to nominate Christopher Petrikus as vice president. Any other nominations for vice president? Any other nominations? Don't
we get an opportunity to decline that? I'll second. You can. >> [laughter] >> Oh, all right. All right, so I need a motion >> I will make a motion to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Chris Petrikus as vice president. I'll second. Motion second on On floor. all those in favor say aye. Aye. Say nay if you oppose. All right. Now, let's move on to clerk. Is there any nominations for clerk? I'll nominate Erica as clerk. Any other nominations for clerk? Any other nominations for clerk? All right. Make a motion for clerk. I'll make a motion to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Erica as clerk. Second. All right. Motion and second on the table. All those in favor. Aye. Aye. Opposed? Motion carries. And let's >> I'll make a motion
to nominate Chelsea Rohrbacher as deputy clerk. Chelsea Rohrbacher as deputy clerk. Any other nominations? Any other nominations for deputy clerk? Any other nominations? All right. I need a motion. I'll make a motion to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Chelsea Rohrbacher as deputy clerk. Second. Motion and second on the floor. All those in favor. Aye. Aye. Opposed? Motion carries. And for treasurer. I'll make a motion to nominate Becky Nordine as treasurer. I'll second. All right. Any Any other nominations? We'll get to that. We'll fast forward. Any other nominations? Any other nominations for treasurer? Any other nominations? All right. So, how about that motion first before the second? I'll make a motion to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Becky Nordine as treasurer. I will second. Sweet. All right. All those in
favor say aye. Opposed? Motion carries. All right. I think we got that taken care of. So, that being said, we can move on to the public participation section. Is there any members of the public that wish to speak? No. None. All righty. Um board committee reports and communication. Is there any board members that have received anything they would like to share to at tonight's meeting? Just under this item here, I'd just like to thank Paul and Erica. Um we attended the legislative dinner for administration board. Tony and Emily also attended. So, thanks for all everybody. It was um a nice event put on by DC Everest. We heard about some new AODA. We heard more about how other districts are doing vocational education. Uh there was a video that showed all kinds of different districts
and we were one of the districts in there. Um and then a big chunk of the night was on special ed funding so legislators could hear uh you know, how it works, what it what's the barriers and what are the challenges and what are some opportunities with it. I want to give kudos to DC Everest for hosting. They literally were one of the districts and right up the road from where our meeting was at was where the tornado wiped out 75 houses and did damage to their elementary school which has been now moved into the Greenheck Turner Center. So, they actually moved a whole elementary school into a building in the district. So, um into their sports facility. So, it's a pretty dramatic but they felt it was important to keep having the dinner or
have the event and really show that community can be strong and continue on. So, um kudos to that and thanks again for the learning uh opportunity to learn together with board members and fellow administrators. And there's two donations to recognize. There do not need a motion but um know that programs that got donations. Does anybody have any questions for our Mr. search through the committees? I know you don't have board docs open in front of you but if you had an opportunity to look at or review them. Not hearing any. We'll move on. Does anybody wish to have anything removed from the consent agenda tonight? Nothing? I'll make a motion to approve all items in the consent agenda including the issue of certified staff contracts for Lena Blake as cross categorical special education teacher and
Jody Collada as interventionist title one. I'll second. All right. We have a motion and second for the consent agenda. All those in favor say aye. Aye. Aye. Opposed? Did you want to say anything? >> [laughter] >> All good? I just was going to mention that um based on finances input, we will work with the St. Germain Silent Trail Association to update that agreement to include some things about if they ever disband and move that the ownership of the building. Make sure all of our insurance Terry and I and Dave are working on that but we took feedback. I just wanted the full board to know the insurance or the finance committee gave some good feedback and we're working on and finalizing that as well. And also um Dr. Maureen and I talked and goes with
and Mr. Luskin as well. Um by you passing this, we will inform parents of these changes before summer so that families can make decisions that they're not out buying all these devices over summer to bring them into school next year with this change too. So, appreciate that you did that. And then three first um if you did you didn't have any questions, you voted. But uh Harlan put together um quite a bit of work into the print match contract. It's a substantial but it's a longer contract and and something that I'll I think thankfully he worked through some challenges I kind of got left over from the last time. And then uh first review of some items, please let us know if there's something in there between now and your committees so that we can
give you any update as we work through that process. I know we voted but we didn't have opposed. Does anybody want to oppose? No. Anything [clears throat] else, Scott, before we move on? >> No. Sliding the consent I just didn't want to say that. Yeah. I know. All right. So, um then we'll go on to the discussion and action items for the approval of CESA number nine and shared services contract 267. I'll second that. We kind of seem to have made the motion. Were Were you just reading that? I'll I'll make the motion. I'll second. I'll second that motion. The CESA nine contract, if you had board docs, unfortunately I did share at finance and personnel we did break down what those days were. I apologize I didn't have all the days broke down but
I did share that. Um Tony is working with the team to get prepared for coaching. We still do not know if we got the reading grant coach. So, we're going to know about that end of March. But we're into almost end of April. So, um as Tony Tony and I had a really good discussion after finance and that you know, we we feel pretty confident what's in this contract. Um maybe what some of those days get used for or um a change a tweak wouldn't be a a big financial change. If we did, we would let the board know but right now that's pretty confident that what we need is there and if we get the grant, we may use the days differently in a different place more than anything but really I use the
same amount of days because part of the grant you have to use you have to keep the same that you had used this year. So, that's all I have. Unfortunately, I can't show you the breakdown of those days. >> [snorts] >> They're in there if you looked at it at the time or saw it at finance. All right. All right. Motion on the table. You made it to the last one. What we got What we got here? We have a motion for approving the CESA nine contract. So, all those on uh uh motion and second on the floor. All those in favor say aye. Aye. Opposed? Motion carries. Erica, if you want to make the next one. >> Sure. I'll make a motion to approve accepting the donation from Northern Pines Youth Football and Cheer
in the amount of $12,073.90 specific to the NPSD football program budget. I'll second or Second. Do Nick or AJ want to mention anything about that donation and what it's mostly going to be used for or why it's really critical? Um it's just updating helmets. Uh we're looking at kind of an influx in numbers which is a great problem to have. Um technology helmets seems like it's ever ever changing. So, we're thankful to have a great partner like Youth Football that helps us financially support that and make sure our kids are safe. All right. We thank them very much. Bless you. All right. Motion and second on the floor. All those in favor say aye. Aye. Opposed? Motion carries. Down to the administrative [clears throat] reports. So, uh you can see it in your board packets.
Obviously. Thank you everyone for submitting them. Um those that didn't get an opportunity to read tonight, uh well, I'm sure they'll read tomorrow. You know, there were a lot of fun things were happening. Yes. Is there any Whatever was your Sunday, I saw. Is there anything you'd like to add to what we can't see? >> [laughter] >> Uh I'll say we had uh four students sign uh with colleges this afternoon in the field house. Um one going to Concordia for football, one going to Concordia for basketball, and then two girls going to Ripon for soccer. Um so, we had a good crowd, a lot of parents, and coaches did a great job representing our student athletes. Uh that's always a fun time. Nice. Another well-run event by Mr. Zylstra. Thank you for and Mrs. Thompson.
Is there anything else? We're excited. I'll share more details in next month, maybe, when I have a little bit more, but we sent, I think, 11 students from Sorensen Middle School to Madison to for the state competition of National History Day. So, it's something where we start in our building, and locally, we kind of judge and move on to a regional event that happened in Stevens Point, and then those judges send on to state. And for the first time ever, we had one selected to go to nationals. Oh, wow. I don't even have the details yet about where nationals are when, but Amelia Linkgren has submitted a website that was just outstanding. She She competed against 17 others at the state and came in first place, so it's pretty exciting. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so amazing.
Um I know of in all my time, I know of one other student that made it to nationals. So, this is a big accomplishment. I'll talk about in my report a couple other students that made it to nationals for other organizations as well, but that's really impressive. So, and really the the whole group that went, they were just an outstanding group. You know, a lot of them are multi-years have been doing it, and it it showed. They really did some awesome I had the fortune to judge documentaries, and I know other ministries in the room I also judged, but I mine this year were just outstanding. I had a lot of seventh and eighth graders who put some time and took feedback over the years and really knocked out of the park. All right. Well,
thank you all for submitting them and all the information that you put in there every month for us to read and catch up on what's going on. So, uh at this time, we'll turn it over to Scott for your report. Yeah, so um I'm going to start with update on referendums. I think um if you had a chance to look in there, I think the theme was they passed at a a a decent rate, um but what really the trend is is the passing margin is barely passing or barely failing is getting um that number is changing. So, we're seeing close to the same, but we're also seeing um the the the distance or, you know, like fortunately, we've been in the mid to upper 60s in ours, you're seeing districts that you know, Butternut
was one or two votes, Crandon was barely less than 20 votes, so it's just you're seeing what used to pass at higher margins either shrink to barely passing or to failing barely. So, that's not a great sign. I think um I think that's something just to watch also in a in their report from school perceptions, uh really Bear put together a nice graphic, but school perceptions I included in your board packet really did a nice job of going through five key points, and I think that was more valuable for you as a board and administration in the future. Um but really with the state making it, you can only go twice in a year, that's changing what April elections look like, right? Cuz you want to be able to get that second referendum in before
uh your budget fails. But if you fail twice, then you have to wait another whole year. So, you go in April and it fails, you going to come back in November or you going to wait a year so that you can go every every year for 3 years? So, there's a lot of strategy becoming used. You got to know your community. Um I was interviewed today about declining enrollment for an organization, and we're talking about declining enrollment, I brought it up. I think it's impacting referendums. You have less students, you know, a lot of times family engagement in your school is going to probably drive your referendum. You have less students, so a smaller percentage of your population is attached to your school. If you're not doing things such as um you know, events in
your school, you're not having walking open free walking techs, community tech, community fab lab, the auditorium, you know, all those things that we do outside of providing a great education for kids and families, I think are becoming important. If you're a taxpayer, you want to see what am I getting for my dollar? Yes, I want my house value to stay high with great school. I want my kids to go to great schools. However, the summer asking the question, "Who moved your community? What do I get for my tax dollars?" I think we offer, now if they don't take advantage of it, but we have a very diverse I think this this school is built with a community mindset, and I think we've carried that mission through. So, something just to watch as time moves forward.
Um couple other notes here. Um Monday night is coming up. You know, it's kind of that crazy time of year where things start coming fast. I was at the signing today, one of the parents was talking about their senior graduating and their first child graduating. It was kind of like, "Whoa, this is a big moment, you know?" It's [snorts] coming quick. All of a sudden, a senior and you're walking across stage. So, um we held a in-service on Friday. Um [snorts] administrative team did a great job putting the day a really quality day together, so kudos to Sue and the team for the work they did for that. Um but one of the things is we did kind of always have in our mind to have a all-staff breakfast and celebrate those retiring and and
or moving on. Um turned into something a little more than it should have, but one of the highlights of that was the Martha Pines Community Foundation first time offering five staff excellent awards, and they actually had a cash prize. That's the term legally we have to use as a prize. Um but they gave five staff members $2,500. So, that's big. It's really, you know, community member at lunch one day came to me and said, "Hey, this is what I want to do. I believe in education in North Pines. I think the staff sometimes does not get celebrated enough as they should, and I'd like to put some money behind this." And then went to the foundation to be the partners to help the process to select and support. So, pretty pretty incredible. The McNutt family
really was supportive of this, and then foundation did a lot of hard work. Josh Chilly's part of that from our team. Connie's going to be involved with that. Um moving forward, but the five winners I want to recognize are, and really thank that foundation is new teacher of the year is Ashley Riester. Professional Leadership Award was Jen Jennifer Lease. Jen Lease. Um Heart of the School Award, Caleb Perez. Outstanding Team Player Award was Carl Paul. And Teacher of the Year was Steve Miller. I I just think to set a tone and really look around that auditorium, I think generated some great and I mean, that was part of our goal as well was to generate when we talked about this and, you know, it moved me when that guy even talked about prior to talk
to me about this. I was like, "You would do this for our staff?" And I mean, and the energy was was really in to see these very high well-deserving people get those awards were really great, and this is something they want to continue to do annually. Um and then anybody nominated got an envelope today. Um put Nikki I should first off introduce Nikki Fuller's here today. So, you're a new board assistant. She started today. She's She was here all day. She didn't leave. So, we didn't scare her at all. She didn't >> [laughter] >> Uh But uh you know, she helped the They They printed them all up and asked we distribute them. Nikki put it together, and they're out mailboxes today or tomorrow morning, they'll be in their mailboxes. So, I think that was
really cool that anybody nominated got that letter, too. It wasn't just the uh for next school year gave out a scholarship for whiteboards in Ali Ramish's fifth grade classroom for $1,800. They gave $2,500. You can see the Woodmizer building's been being built. Our intro to construction kids are working hard out there. What an amazing experience for them. They gave $2,300 to Land O' Lakes school garden for red granite and benches for the garden. And then they gave $651.33 to the Land O' Lakes elementary gardens. Um Cuz that's what the students came up Yeah. >> [laughter] >> Exactly what they needed. Um and then uh fifth graders uh put in and and won or got awarded $1,500 to attend the planetarium. Um It was West to see um it's a great experience. They typically they tie
in um going to the art museum and some other opportunities on that. It's not just there and back for that. So, kudos to the foundation. I also Mr. Luskey, I'm sorry. I mean, it's great to have a state championship trophy. I'm not complaining about that, but he's with Harland now our block, but I also want to give foundation worked closely with Breakaway Sports downtown to award two e-bikes. You might like, "Do we have enough e-bikes?" Um but we didn't have e-bikes for the staff. So, um Harland, Dave Strong, and Rod Sternig and worked um to get a donation, and then the foundation was able to award two two, right? Two e-bikes to the district as well. So, that was really cool the foundation was part of that, and the staff worked really hard to make
that happen in a in a good collaborative with our community partners, so Um the other thing that comes quick, and I mentioned those seniors parents, um we have the alumni Hall of Fame at 10:00 a.m. Um one of the key people being inducted to that is Mr. David Weber, so um it'd be really cool to see him inducted into the Hall of Fame, the alumni Hall of Fame. I'll announce the full class. I'm finalizing getting back all my information. Then graduation is at 1:00. Make sure you let Susie know if you're going to be attending that. We have three board members with graduates this year, so really cool experience. We're excited for that. It's always a special moment when board members have children walking across that stage. And if your spouses too. And if your
spouses are attending, would you like to get flowers for you and them? If they want them, and want to sit up front with you, they're welcome to do that. We have seats for you right by stage, then you can greet the graduates. Um we did have um the not lieutenant the secretary of state attended Eagle River Elementary and to come and celebrate $101,000 of common school funds. Um so kind of nice event. Thankfully, Harlan and Brooke kind of took the lead as our dignitaries as Tony and I were gone that day, and Gretchen was out as well, so we put put in the next port in line of right there, and uh but nice event by Yone and the third grade class, and both team did a nice job there. So, great to have them
come to Northland Pines and celebrate with us. Um I mentioned um we have some success for National History Day, but um pretty incredible year we're having actually. So, HOSA, which is a health and safe health occupational student association, I believe it is. Um we had Milo Milo Albrecht made it to nationals in um medical term spelling, and then Oscar Ilson made it um for Future Business Leaders Association in a real estate category. Um but to make it to nationals is incredible. If you've ever been along to any of these organizations, this is not like, oh some kids make it. It is fierce competition all along the way, and then when you get to state to make it, and then get up on these stages at state, that's a huge accomplishment. Also at HOSA, Lilly Rushman
is one of the board members there, so she will also go to nationals with the board from HOSA. So, um just kudos to Amy Justice. Um she has been phenomenal with HOSA. She has had multiple people being on the student side of the board. This is her first one to nationals, but just kudos. The experiences these kids are having. And then Jake Richards um has done a phenomenal job with just giving kids amazing experiences. You know, they took second in the state last year in the finance bowl. He had another team down there. Um we had a board member's son involved this year down there. Um Jackson did a great job. The team did well again. He's very proud of them. Represented us well. Um um just giving these kids great experiences all the way
around the board. So, kudos to them. And to have these big um it also it says a lot about our staff and our curriculum um that we have kids that have this ability to get there. So, kudos to the kids and families, but also our staff and curriculum for getting us there. Um the last thing um I want to mention is um Tony, myself, Harlan, and Adam Matyska attended a regional school work and business partnership kind of a summit meeting down at Rhinelander, the Rhinelander School District. Um we've been talking about this for a while, so they invited all the schools in the area, Nicolet College, and CESA 9. Um really good discussion of how do we engage businesses? How do we work together as a region versus, well, Three Lakes is doing something, and
Pines is doing something, and Phelps is doing something, and Rhinelander is doing something. We all have different opportunities in our community. Um it went so well, and this is really forward thinking. Um it's going to take a little time to kind of put together. Um also make it these businesses that give our kids these opportunities, we want to make their lives easier. We're appreciative of what they do. So, on May 20th, they're going to have the second meeting, and um Oneida Economic Development and Vilas County Economic Development will be there. Um really, you know, really proud of the work Adam and Dan and and the team and Harlan and everybody has been doing in our high school. We know we want to get better. We heard some good ideas um that some of them might
be at Pines or maybe regional. So, we're going to go down to Nicolet on the 20th for half day again, and just see where this concept can go, and really grow this.
