001All right, we're streaming and recording and the mics are live. All right, it is 6 o'clock. We will call the Monday, February 23rd regular board meeting to order. Roll call, please. >> All right. Don Kusky, Andrew Coupe, >> here. >> Phil Henl, >> here. >> Kevin Jensen >> here. >> Miriam and Barbara >> here. >> Bert Richard >> here. >> Nelly Shy >> here. >> Doug Kuchko. And Lorie Zarbach >> here. >> And Randy, was the proper notice given for this meeting? >> Yes. Please be advised that public notice of this meeting as required by sections 19.84 and 65.90 of the Wisconsin statutes has been properly given. Such notice consisted of a notice and agenda to the official newspaper of the rice chronotype to the Oaklair leader and radio stations WJMC and WAQE indicating the
002date, time and place of the meeting. Such notice was given more than 24 hours prior to the meeting. >> Thank you. It does appear that a proper notice was given for this meeting. We will now stand for the pledge. I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Had no one sign up for Well, we'll do our accommodations first. We'll get started there. And we will start um with our students. We'll start off with our our high school student. There's a spot over here next to Mr. Drossst, Mr. Richard for parents or anybody that wants to take video and pictures from that location while your student is up at the podium. And
003so we will start with High School. Good evening. Um, I'm Miss Doctor. I'm an English teacher at the high school. Right here with me I have Caleb Germanson who's an 11th grader. Um Caleb is doing been doing just great things this year. He's been doing great things every year, but this year he's been doing especially well in our FFA program. I believe you won your speaking contest, right? And you were at the capital today for it. >> I was. >> Yeah. How'd that go? >> Good. We talked to different legislators down there about agricultural education >> and it was really good impact for the students that went and the legislators that we talked to. >> Okay, great. You didn't have to say anything, but I just wanted to share how great you're still. >> That's
004good. >> So, I've known Caleb since his freshman year. Um, he has shown just tremendous growth in character as I've gotten to know him, and he's really showing up to be one of the best and brightest at our school. Um, in our new English 11 class that we're doing this year, he's just delivered speeches that rival those of trained professionals. He, um, jumps every bar that's set before him, and he's just doing an amazing job. And every task that he has, he does. does so not just for a grade but to grow as a person and to grow as a future leader in our community. >> Yeah, that's that's it. Just here to celebrate. >> Yeah. >> Now turn that way. There we go. Rice Lake Middle School. >> Hi, Mom. >> Hi, I'm Jenna
005Mundon from the middle school. Uh myself along with the other eighth grade teachers have nominated Bronze AR as our student of the month. Um, we wanted to start out by saying how lucky we are to have Bronze in our classes. He is being nominated as an eighth grade student of the month for many reasons. Not only does he excel academically, but he is also an outstanding citizen of Rice Lake Middle School. He is responsible and works hard to always do his best. He is very respectful and is friendly, easy to talk to, which makes him a natural leader. He is always willing to work with others and is wellliked by his classmates and teachers. He works very hard outside of the classroom as well. He's in our math counts team and qualified for the state
006competition in March coming up in a couple weeks. He's a member of Warriors for Christ, participates in multiple sports. He does recycling on Fridays for the middle school and Hilltop and he is currently in forensics. Um the forensics coach wanted me to share that at the first invitational um the friend that he competed with was having kind of some anxiety and he stepped up and helped them through it and they ended up performing in all the rounds and earned an excellent um which got them a blue ribbon. So the coaches were super proud of him for that. Um Bronze is a wonderful example of the warrior way. Congratulations Bronze. Thank you. Hogan Elementary. I'm Cindy Guess, first grade teacher at Hogan Elementary. This is Erin Zappa. I'm nominating Aaron for his academic excellency, his leadership,
007his citizenship and perseverance and resilience. Um, Aaron is a great student to have in the classroom at Hogan Elementary. Every week, Aaron writes a really long letter on the back of his pizza math facts quiz. The letter says the same thing over and over again. Says this here. Do you want to read this letter to everybody? you okay with that or no? >> Well, he he wrote it the other day on his whiteboard and I took his whiteboard from him and he probably wondered what I did with it, but um it says I love school forever because math, language arts, science, social studies, Chromebooks, teachers, library, fied, lunch, recess, grammar, everything. So, usually says everything. Um, it is a letter about how much he loves school and he lists all of the subjects and he
008says every time that he loves his teachers. Aaron is a safe warrior. He keeps his hands to himself and follows the classroom and school rules. He treats others with kindness and respect. Aaron is a responsible warrior. He finishes assignments on time and in a neat fashion. He is willing to share his thinking with others. He is willing to be a leader with his reading and math strategies. As a classroom helper, he is willing to do any task that I ask him to do. He is a respectful warrior. He is polite and courteous to his classmates and teachers. Aaron understands that what he what we say can affect others. And then lastly, he is has a friendly demeanor and smile and is a wonderful person to have in the classroom. And I'm so glad that I'm
009able to be his teacher. There you go. All right. Next, Painter Elementary. Good. >> Hi. Uh, my name is Sarah Clark. I'm a first grade teacher at Tainter Elementary. And, um, doing these kinds of things is like the joy of my It fills my cup so much. So, I'm really delighted to be here because Jackson is extraordinary. I love having him in my class. I nominated Jackson for so many reasons. Not only is he an outstanding student, but he's a kid that really um exhibits in the day-to-day how to be a warrior, he is kind, caring, courteous, he has great manners, a big heart, and he just excels academically across the board. Um he really is a delight to have in class. And this is the kind of kid that every teacher dreams of having.
010And so I'm so joyful to have him up here. And I know it's a weird thing for kids to come up here and have all these eyes on us, but I couldn't be more excited. I'm thrilled that we're standing up here to celebrate him. Um, I even understood that in kindergarten, Mrs. Galvin had nominated for this same award. It just shows what an exemplary kid he is. He stands out a above the rest. So, I am delighted to be here, Jackson. You do such a rockstar job in class. I'm so glad you're here tonight. So, um, I feel very proud of you each and every day. So, way to go, Jackson. Extra mile. And shout out to his parents. They're phenomenal. Right. >> Okay. and uh Hilltop Elementary. GG knows what to do. I am
011here on behalf of Stacy Layman who is a first grade teacher at Hilltop Elementary. So she nominated Genevieve Pollson um and her parents are Jonathan and Vanessa Pollson and um she nominated her for her leadership and her citizenship. and she said, "Jenevieve Pollson, also known as Gigi, consistently demonstrates what it means to follow the warrior way by being respectful, responsible, safe, and kind each day at school. She goes out of her way to help others, and is a good friend to everyone, making those around her feel included and welcomed. She treats her friends and the adults at school with respect and makes thoughtful choices that contribute to a positive school environment. Academically, she is always up for a challenge. She is eager to participate and shows a genuine interest in learning. Her positive attitude, strong
012work ethic, and kind demeanor make her a wonderful role model for others. For these reasons, I am beyond proud to nominate Genevieve as the February student of the month. So, I would like to congratulate all of our winners this evening and let you know that your names will be added to a drawing at the end of the school year. We will draw some names and some lucky winners will receive a Chromebook. So, good luck on the drawing. We'll take a brief moment for anybody that wants to uh step out, but we've got some really exciting things going on on the agenda. So, hang around. Yeah, that is pretty cool, isn't it? >> Yeah. Pretty cute. Yeah. Like she's still on point with her other >> I know. Adorable. >> Like he rehearsed that. It was
013like he rehearsed that. >> A little bit too. We're gonna talk about >> Yeah, I'm gonna real quick >> because I don't think she's >> GG. Enjoy your ice cream. >> Be kind of weird to explain. >> Three first graders. >> So communication to up to this one. >> All right, we will get back into our agenda. Did not have anybody sign up for appearances. So, we will move on to the approval of our regular session meeting minutes for Monday, February 9th. Do I have a motion to approve? >> So moved. >> Motion has been made. Is there a second? >> Second. >> Motion has been made and seconded. Any further discussion? Seeing none, all in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Opposed. And the minutes have been approved. Next, we have our
014consent agenda where we have one employment resignation and five employment recommendations. I would entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda. >> So moved. >> Motion has been made. Is there a second? >> Second. >> Motion has been made and seconded. Any further discussion? Seeing none, all in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Opposed and the consent agenda has been moved. Next, we have uh an action item for our National School Breakfast Week, which is March 2nd through the 6th. So, we will proclaim that March 2nd through the 6th, 2026 is National School Breakfast Week. And with that, I would entertain a motion to approve that proclamation. >> I'll move to approve the National School Breakfast Week. >> Motion has been made. Is there a second? >> Second. >> Motion has been made
015and seconded. All in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Opposed. and it has been proclaimed the National School Breakfast Week of March 2nd through the 6th. Next, we have a really fun and exciting uh opportunity to hear from the Boys and Girls Club. >> All right. Oh, sorry. >> All right. Well, good evening. Obviously, another hat that I wear is the uh executive director at Boys and Girls Club. And um I really wanted to bring uh forward our be great graduate program so that our board can understand as well as those that are listening uh what this program has done for our community. Uh a couple years ago I found out that uh when I was new in my role that mo the majority of uh boys and girls clubs in the state
016had a grant that they were receiving for this particular uh project and we were not. And so I went after the dollars and we were able to then use those dollars that are state funded to hire a graduate specialist. Uh Janette has been in her role for about a year and a half. She'll go into that a little bit. Almost two years. Yeah, two years. Um and done some really amazing things to help uh move kids to ensure that they are graduating um and being successful in our community. So, I'm going to let Janette go through all these slides. I am going to preface that I had this really pretty. It was really It slid through really nice things that had little things happening in it. So, it might look a little funky with it
017way it got broken up, but Janette will take over. >> Thank you, Lori. So, um, hi. I am Janette Foneretta. Um, you can just kind of see me a little. >> All right. >> Um, I, um, actually moved here to Rice Lake almost four years ago now from San Diego. My favorite season is winter. Fun fact. Um, so yeah, so I really enjoy it during the summertime, too. Um, we live close to lake. We went from ocean living to lake living, so it's a pretty great thing. Um, I have six children of my own. two that I inherited when I got married, four that I birthed, and I have five grandchildren. So, working with kids is fun for me. I enjoy mentoring them and helping them get where they need to go. >> Um, this
018program, um, yeah, you can keep going. >> Okay. >> I'm used to pushing a button. >> It's all right. It came through as a PDF. Otherwise, we're good. This program is geared um to give encouragement to middle and high school students. Um and most of them are at risk of dropping out or not graduating on time. Now, that being said, we do um take care of some students that don't have that issue. They just might have some rough home lives or lots of different things going on, but this is our main focus is to help those that are at risk. Um the program helps encourage middle and high school students um so that we can meet with them weekly and we can guide them and help them and keep them on track. Some kids just
019need somebody to say, "Hey, did you do your homework last night or something like that?" Um just a little boost to give them going. Thank you. You're doing great job. >> Hey, >> she changed my thing. So, I'm like, you got it. >> Okay. All right. >> Um, yes, we like to promote um long-term um performance with these kids. Um I work with them dayto-day and we do goals. We make goals. We make daily, weekly, and monthly goals. Term goals, semester goals. What are we doing after high school? Goals. Um maybe it's to go off to college. Maybe it's just to go to tech school. Maybe it's just to be a part of the workforce. We need everybody and I just want to encourage the kids to do the best that they can do. So,
020currently in Rice Lake, um we are I am helping 11 students. We have six at the middle school and five at the high school. Now, this program is grant funded by um obviously by the government, but um we are technically only paid for those that are tannif eligible. That being said, we take them all. I don't care if they're TANF eligible. Currently have three Rice Lake students that we help that are not TANF eligible, but they are still welcome and we will take them all. Um, one of the things we've done this last year at Rice Lake Middle School, um, with the help of the counselor at the school, we, um, started, um, a study hall for the students. Um, the counselor and I met every Friday with the kids. She put in a bunch
021of students that were in the program. Um, I think there was like 15 of them. Do you know, was there 15? I think we had 15 students in the study hall. Now, all of those students that were all eighth graders, all were in that group last year. All of them had to go to remediation. Do you guys know what the remediation? Okay. So, they all were in remediation. So, we picked up this study hall, met with these students every Friday and nailed them on their homework. What's your missing assignments? What's the most points you can get? What can we do? Let's go talk to your teacher. So, we met with these students and I was very happy with what we did. Um Nicole and I were able to get all of the students through and
022only one of them had to go to remediation that term. So that was really great for us. Um this is just a slide. This is part of our reporting process. Um I have to report quarterly. So from October to December um we reported on 26 students. I have more than that. I think I have 32 students right now. 526 TANF eligible. This is between all five schools that we take care of and they keep track of after school activities if the kids are engaged in after school activities or working or volunteering. So we keep track of that stuff. Attendance is big and can't remember what else. Mentoring sessions. Yeah. So um we are at 200% in Baron County. We are supposed to be helping 13 students and we currently report on 26. So it's pretty
023great program. >> So what do our meetings look like? So our meetings I gear it for each student. We do one-on-one meeting meetings with each student. We do not pull them out of core classes. We I meet with them during art or fied or different things like that. the focus is mainly homework um and getting um them to do their homework and get in touch with their studies and figure out how we're going to get them done on time. Um we also have partnered at some of the schools we have tutors that come in from National Junior's Honor Society that those kids come in and help tutor. I do not do math. I do not do high school math. So those kids come and help me help each other. So, it's kind of a great
024thing to have the peers come and help each other. Um, I'm a big advocate on being consistent. Um, these kids know I'm coming whether they like it or not, and some of them don't, but whether they like it or not, I'm coming. And last week, actually, I was out sick. I missed a couple days. And two of the students that absolutely don't want to come or tell me all the time, I don't want to see you this week, Mrs. F. I got emails from them. Where are you? What's going on? So, that made me feel really great that we're making a connection and that they know that I'm going to be there whether they're going to fight me on it or not. I bring my snack cart. What do you want for a snack? All
025about bribery. I mean, incentives. Let's get them in there. So, there we go. Um, another big focus is the setting of goals, assisting stu students to connect with their teachers and counselors. That's huge to me. I walk into the high school and to the middle school over here at Rice Lake and those kids know that if they're giving me a line of bull that we're going to walk over to their teacher's classroom and I'm going to get the story. Oh, I already turned that in, Mrs. FS. That story I I hear that story every day. And we either email the teacher together and say, "Has it been graded yet?" Well, the kids get mad sometimes because they're like, "I turned it in. The teacher didn't grade it." I get that, but you turned it in
026late. So, the teacher has to move on. So, it also helps teach them the importance of getting stuff in on time that you are being inconsiderate to your teachers. Like, they've already graded this stuff, so now they have to go backwards. So, that's not fair. So, it kind of helps to teach them a little bit of that, too. Um, we email teachers, we walk to the students, and I actually have a teacher that's over at the WOW building who has helped me with a couple study guides for some stuff. So, now I can sit down with a student who's doing an online class. I have no idea what they're doing and she's given me a study bite so I can sit and help the kids go through that way. So, um, assist in managing obstacles.
027This is a big one. Um, we had a student last year um at the high school. He is just he was the greatest kid. He's a big lover, big teddy bear. Didn't do his work. Couldn't get him through at the goal line. We just couldn't do it. So the school worked with him and we put him in the program through Northwood Tech and got him into a role where he could get his HSED. He was not going to graduate. He was not doing his work. Um no matter what we did to encourage him, he just wasn't doing it. So we worked really hard with him and put him in a boot camp. Um and then I actually work at Northwood Tech, too, and I work in the adult ed. So, I am a test proctor
028and help with the GED program. So, it worked out really well that I got to go and sit with him and babysit and encourage him and bring him snacks and get him going. Come on, we got to do this. We got to pass this test. We got to do this. And then he'd come back the next day. Come on, we got to do this. You got this. Took us two weeks, but he did it. And he graduated and he passed and he walked across that stage. And I stood there by that gate waiting for him. And the first thing he said was, "Do I get my hug now, Mrs. FS?" And I was like, "Heck yeah, you do." Introduced me to his family, who I've only talked to via email or on phone, and got
029to give this kid a great big hug and help him get past this part. And now he is out in our community and working and still stops by the club every now and then to say hi. And I get Snapchats from him now. So >> yeah. So, um, some of the benefits, um, I am big about getting the parents involved. I know when we have little ones. I was guilty of it myself. When our kids are little, we're all gung-ho. We want to go to kindergarten, we want to go to first grade, we want to go to all the programs. They're not so encouraging when you get to high school. A lot of the parents are busy. Um, they may have younger siblings. So, um, I try to encourage the parents to be a part
030of everything. I send out praise emails regularly. They're all the kids in this program, a lot of them are struggling. So, the parents are used to hearing the struggles. So, I give out praises. You know what? This student this week turned in all their work on time. That is a huge big deal. Help me praise them. Help me encourage them. Um, we also do monthly newsletters and send those out. Um, I talk to the administrators and the teachers and the counselors on a regular basis. I'm sure they kind of get sick of me being in their office sometimes, but I kind of roll in and out for attendance and stuff like that. Another one of the benefits for the club membership is um if they're in middle school, they have free um membership to the
031Boys and Girls Club. So, um during the school year, they can attend for free, which promotes everything. You know, we have power hour that they can attend and do homework and then they get to do fun programming, so they still get to be a kid, too. And then coming soon, as we all know, we're all excited about the new building. Um, so the new building will also have a room that is going to be a teen room that we're hoping to utilize after school so the kids can come in after school. Incentives are big. Um, we did a 3% contest. Oh, this is the old one you didn't know. Okay, >> it's okay. >> Um Um, we did a 3% contest. Um, I had a kid last year in math that was getting a 10%.
032And so we every week had a 3% contest. You come in next week and we're going to check your grades and if it goes up 3%, your name goes in the drawing. If you come in next week and you go up 3% again, you're going in the drawing. He may still be sitting on an F, but he's at least progressing. And that's what I want to encourage them is just keep going. Um, we also got to take a trip to a Brewers game last year. um where Boys and Girls Club got to go tailgating and they sponsored us and the kids got to go um to a tailgating party and have BRZ and burgers and everything else and go to the game and they just had a blast. None of the kids that we took
033had ever been to any kind of sporting event other than a high school game. So, it was super exciting. So, I know next is questions, but one of the things I'd like to reach out is just to make sure that people in the community know about this because when we get the students late and they're already way far behind, it's hard to play catchup. When you're already credit deficient and you're already not going to graduate and you're sitting here in the middle of your senior year, that's the hard time to catch them. So, this program works from sixth grade to 12th grade. And if we can get those struggling families when they're in sixth and seventh grade and just move them through school and give them something to work for and know that somebody's going
034to be there unconditionally for them, that's what we're working for. So, any questions? >> All right. Thank you. >> Thank you. Next we have our curriculum committee meeting update. We met on Tuesday, February 17th. We our agenda two agenda items. The first one was the AGR midyear report. We had our elementary principles uh there and reported back to us on where we're at um with those with those uh goals and and growth goals. And then we our second item was uh Marsha gave us a um little report on we are Race Lake and uh that's coming on March 26th. It's an event um that we will have at the school at the middle school and uh it's a I think last year was the first year we did that Randy and then >> yeah it
035was and it was uh yeah it was a big hit. You had everyone from uh Bun Hansen and the Sons of Norway uh there sharing some cultural pieces to lots of other groups and there were some if I remember right some mini performances maybe even some dancing. Yeah, some dancing performances and yeah, it was a lot of fun and plenty of food and snacks. So, uh I would yeah, as we get closer to it, we'll advertise it more and tell you more about it, but yeah, it was fun >> and it is open to all of our communities. It is stop and check it out. >> So, that was our curriculum committee. >> Perfect. Thank you. Thank you. Next, we have our board policy and legislative advocacy committee meeting update. We met on Thursday, February
03612th, and uh we approved our minutes, got a a brief update from Phil on our legislative update, and then we started looking at uh a number of policies and uh worked our way through some of those. We have nothing at this time to bring forward for a first reading, but we will be meeting again um in a couple weeks and we'll be um hopefully fine-tuning some of those to bring back for a first reading at our next at our next meeting. >> So, that was our update on policy. Speaking of WASB public policy correspondence update, Phil, what do you got for us tonight? >> Well, I want you to know that I worked extra hard to make this brief because there's a lot of information, but I didn't have time to make it interesting, so
037please forgive me for that. Um, the Wisconsin Senate's going to be back in session in March. And the significance of that is that any bills that have already been passed by the assembly could be passed by the Senate and then they would go to the governor. And something I learned was that specific days that bills are sent to the governor for s for being signed or or being vetoed. And the next one's April 2nd. Uh the rule of thumb is that bills that are passed with support from both parties have a chance to be signed and bills that are only passed by Republicans probably will be vetoed. The state budget surplus is a big topic. It was much larger than expected. In total, it's greater than $2 billion. Uh we just got an email about
038that today from WASBY. I believe you may have read that. Um the legislature being both houses, the leaders of both houses and the governor are working together to to try to find a compromise. Um the governor wants property tax relief. The legislature wants property tax relief. Uh but uh they differ on how to do it. The legislature would like to give out $500 rebate checks. The governor, though he re though he proposed that a few years ago, I guess uh does not like that idea now. The governor would like to increase school aids by $450 million. And there were some rumors that he would negotiate his 400year veto, which creates the $325 increase per student for 400 years. But now it sounds like that he's not willing to do that, at least uh for what's
039being offered. but they both are willing to do an extra $200 million for special education. Um so the speaker is optimistic and talks are continuing. The speaker is uh actually retiring. He's been speaker for 22 years. He's accumulated a lot of power. So when that changes uh the the uh atmosphere in Madison is probably going to change somewhat too. How? I don't know. Um probably it'll be a little more difficult to twist some people's arms if you have a speaker that's put fewer skeletons in the closet. Uh there's a long summary of bills. I'm just going to hit a couple of highlights. There are a couple of categories. There are bills that have been passed by both the assembly and the senate and are going to the governor for action by the governor. There are
040uh two that were part that were passed in in only partisan fashion by the Republicans designating participants on sports teams by biological sex and requiring a schoolboard policy on name and pronoun change uh and having a protocol for that. That sounds familiar. We already have it. Those will probably be vetoed there. The next one modifies and expands tech education grants which may be signed. There's uh one that requires DPI to uh collaborate with nonprofit organizations to provide development grants for science teachers which has a chance of being signed. There is a teacher bill of rights uh which is supposed to strengthen the hand of teachers to handle behavior issues in the classroom. for some reason, which I don't understand, that was passed in partisan fashion, so that'll probably be vetoed. Several bills um specify what
041is appropriate communication between staff and students and what is grooming. And apparently now grooming is not a crime. So they're passing a bill that makes it a crime and that is bipartisan. So that may be signed. That seems strange, doesn't it? Um there's a a bill that's been batted around put more restrictions on referenda that'll probably be vetoed. Second category is bills passed by the assembly that have to be passed by the Senate this coming March or they won't have a chance to go to their governor's one that would require cursive in all schools in most of the grade levels. provide sex abuse education, mandate cardiac emergency plans, uh someone one that has to do with workforce training grants, one that would prohibit the use of wireless communication devices during the school day in some
042fashion, and a new one I hadn't heard of that would allow chiropractors to perform school medical exams. So, that's the summary. Thank you. >> Any questions? >> Interesting. Thank you for that. Next, our upcoming meeting schedule. We have a legal and legislative video update on Wednesday, March 18th at noon. No registration is required for that. And then our summer learning symposium July 10th and 11th over at Stevens Point. Um, and that does require registration. So, if you can attend that, please let Colleen know so she can get you signed up. That is our upcoming meeting schedule. Next on the agenda, we get to hear from our students. >> Hi, my name is Elise Johnson. I am a sophomore class rep. >> Hi, my name is Hugo Asavo Sanchez. I am also a sophomore class rep.
043>> So, here is our yearly calendar and kind of our second semester breakout groups. So, we just had our Valentine's Day delivery that was hosted by FCCLA. So, we did was it candy? >> I think candy and notes. >> Yeah, they did candy and notes. That was fun. Good student involvement. And next coming up, we have our March bracket challenge which is going along with our kind of a spring week of fun. We are going to do some dressup days and we're kind of going to do a homecoming style event. So, we're going to have games throughout the week and just try to build student involvement. And I think we're also going to do a March Madness bracket challenge. >> Okay. So, one of our subgroups um currently is unsung heroes. So, they've already hit
044a couple of our um groups, which is the crossing guards and the administrative. We did this same thing last year, just a way to celebrate and honor the different staff that helped throughout the community that don't get as much recognition as they probably should. So, this is just the list of who's coming up. So, yeah, custodians, lunch troop staff, all of them, and just give some coffee and donuts, something nice to brighten up their day. So, we had a really exciting opportunity this past week. On Wednesday, we went down to Hudson and we collaborated with all the schools in the Big Rivers conference, their student councils. So, it we got to hear a lot of ideas and it was a really exciting fun time. Um, some of our key takeaways were we did a lot,
045we noticed that a lot of the things we're doing in our school were kind of takeaways the other student councils had that they were super excited to incorporate. So, we were kind of like pat on the back a big exciting that we were doing a lot of good things. And then we also noticed just like we just want to appreciate all of the support we get from our staff and leaders in our warrior leadership team. just they make a huge impact. And one of the things we kind of wanted to adapt next year is we don't have a great time structure and kind of the structure of our student council is a lot different than a lot of people's because we have 80 students in our war leadership team whereas some student councils only have
04620 elected people. and we're just looking for a way that we can keep everybody involved but still have it be efficient and get everything done that we need to. So, we're just a few things that we're going to be implementing next year that will hopefully bring that efficiency up. >> Yeah. So, this week is actually FFA week. We um collaborate with FFA to especially on the barn bash the end of the week. um they're doing a tailgate and bonfire that day. Um just different activities, lunchroom activities and different dress up days they're doing. And then we also going back to our summer and March week kind of like we explained kind of like homecoming to some extent just different uh we all have a pep assembly for that. We'll have a giveaway since we um
047haven't given away something in a while. So, and different dressups and um activities that are still in the mix of being planned. Um so then also we have small ideas big difference group that me and another class rep um lead. And this is just some of the past activities. You can see we have hallway limbo and um hallway soccer bowling. just some different um hallway games during breakfast break just to just takes them like 10 seconds they do it and they get to put their name into a bucket for a chance to win a prize. So uh callers pint of ice cream and then just like different lunchroom activity. We do music every Friday. And then on our Smartboards throughout the school, we do daily trivia and fun facts and just something like there's something
048for cancer awareness month and Black History Month and stuff like that. And then just a little look into the future, some activities. >> So, a lot of exciting things in winter sports. We are kind of kicking off our playoff season. So, we had exciting with boys basketball. They got the night seed, so their playoffs will start next week. Girls basketball, Addy just received her 2,000 points. So, that was super exciting. Um, and then we start playoffs this week, so we have our first game on Friday. And then boys hockey, they will play Amory tomorrow and then luck if when they win. Um, girls gymnastics, um, they participated in the Big Rivers Conference Champion Championship at Oaklair Memorial and they placed fifth. Boys wrestling, Michael Cirk took second place at the Division 2 sectional, so he
049will go to state. And then boys swimming, they just competed. Um Josh Cortez placed sixth and then Anders Donsy plays 15th and then the Relays also placed um 14th and 16th. >> Okay, so some other sports and club highlights um we have the Warrior at SA State um pretty recently. I want to I think let me her name Carly >> what's her name? the last name, >> Carly. Well, one of they all did really well and one of them got um first team all state, I think, and they had their performance and then robotics, they also had have their state competition coming up. You can see their picture of their regionals competition that they had a couple weeks ago. And then for skiing, Quinn Ener also qualified. It was last week and he got to
050go compete at state. And then currently, I think started like half an hour ago, we had the band and choir concert tonight. So that's going on at the high school. And then couple weekends ago, we had Feed My Starving Children. That was a pretty successful event. The high school packing session had 93 students show up and packed a couple meals, all different sess sessions for for people around the world. Um, our first blood drive got cancelled because it was a snow day. So, that was disappointing. But we will have our next blood drive on March 25th. And this is open to the community also, not just the school. So, get mark it on your calendars and come give. It'll be fun. We have lots of snacks and it'll be good. >> Any questions? I think
051you guys are doing a great job. Do you ever have any ideas where you think, "Boy, this would be a neat thing to do, but take a couple hundred extra dollars than we have where if you had just a little bit more resources, you could do some fun or neat things." >> Um, I think most of our activities that were like, shoot, this would be really fun is just time. >> Um, we definitely there's maybe some ideas where it's like, it's probably not completely necessary. we could use a lot of the resources we have. So, if we ever do, we'd probably do a fundraiser or something. We have done fundraisers. We did a Domino's pizza fundraiser earlier this year, which I think brought in some stuff. But, for the most part, it's just getting people
052to come and plan the events and to get them organized, which is kind of one thing that we were working on after our conference. So, that's our big emphasis this year. Do you ever think about how we could possibly get more students to come to some of the sporting events? >> Yeah. Like let me think like one of the big things is like um try to do tailgates. That's what they're doing on Friday before the girls game. Try to bring more people to that. But not really. You can try to like bring incentives. Like one of the things like small ideas big difference. One of the things we're doing um hopefully next week, not to compete with FFA, we were going to do it this week, but um Warrior Spirit Day. So, you wear Warrior
053gear to like support the sports teams and you get into a drawing and you can win $10 quick trip gift card and it's just a small way to support different um sports and a little incentive in it for them. Yeah, I know. Last year we did we're started using GoFan and students track every single game they go to and that's their pass. And last year we did an incentive where like the people who had gone to the top two games got a prize. But and it was fun to see but it also at the same time it was the people who were going to games anyway would get it. So we're still working on a way to kind of bring more students in because there's a few sports like football and volleyball are super everybody's
054super excited to go but there's some sports like um basketball doesn't always get a lot of people. So, we're working on ways to make them fun and that can be halftime games or raffles. So, that's one thing that we're trying to implement. >> I love that you highlighted the other opportunities that there are the music and the um you know, go back to that screen where you had >> Robotics, right? The skiing, the band and choir. Is there ways that we can also promote that as well? I mean, there's opportunities for students to support those too, right? To go to robotics and stuff. I mean, just making sure that we're making sure kids are aware of that, too. >> Yeah, I get that. Uh it's kind of hard sometimes with a couple of things cuz
055I know like we try to get more involvement but uh we just I think with different little activities like we were talking about it could definitely bring more people in. So >> yeah, that's awesome. >> I think one thing that kind of is coming, we're trying to this year use our social media account more. So, um, we're trying to promote a lot of these things, posting it, just reminders to get people involved and to come to these events to support. One hard thing is a lot of these things are very far away. So, getting people to go to those is harder because they have to drive. But we're just trying to give even in school just like, "Hey, good luck this weekend." Just posting and getting more of the word out there so then people
056get excited about it. >> Thanks, Joe. Any other questions or comments? >> Thank you. >> Yeah, good job. >> District administrator comments. >> Yeah, just a few things to add. They had already mentioned the the band and choir concert taking place right now at the auditorium. Um, also tomorrow night there is the all staff recognition night at the basketball uh game. I think things kick off there. I think the JV game kicks off at 5:45 I think and varsity game at 7 7:15 >> 7:15 yes not 7 um and so uh if you check out the post on the Facebook page there's lots of different things happening there so uh if you're able to I think it'd be worth your time to check it out uh the end of the trimester for trimester 2 for
057the elementary level is this Friday and then just a reminder due to spring break there's only one board meeting in March so we won't be meeting here until March 23rd for regular board meeting and then please everyone continue to check out uh Facebook page, website, uh things like that for updates on a lot of great things happening throughout the district. >> All right, thank you for that update. Next, I would entertain a motion to convene into close session pursuant to Wisconsin statutes 19.851C and that is the approval of our close session meeting minutes from Monday, February 9th and also uh 19.851E 851E and that's to discuss an individual employee contract. >> Do I have a motion to go into closed? >> Motion has been made and seconded. >> Okay, one of us. >> Roll call,
058please. >> Andrew Coupe, >> yes. >> Phil Henl, >> here. >> Kevin Jensen, >> yes. >> Miriam Barbara, >> yes. >> Bert Richard, >> yes. >> Nelly Sher, >> yes. And >> Lori Zarbach, >> yes. >> All right. We are in close.
