001welcome to the Hoover City Board of Education board meeting if you say please please join me in a moment of silence thank you please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance of the United States will you please call roll to establish a quorum here here thank you you have before you board the agenda for the meeting do I have a motion to adopt second second all in favor any opposed the agenda is approved we will now move to recognitions Miss Harrison thank you president before we get to our recognition tonight we do have one Proclamation and it is for National Women's History Month held in March it's a month that celebrates the contributions women have made in the U.S and recognizes the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety

002of fields our Proclamation can be found on our website on the board of education webpage and part of it says American women of every race class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our nation in countless reported and unreported ways American women of every race class and ethnic backgrounds served as early leaders in the Forefront of every major Progressive social change Movement we joined the National Women's history Alliance and other organizations in proclaiming March 2023 as National Women's History Month in university schools and I want to make a quick mention about National School breakfast week which it was last week and it was a a week to promote the importance of a healthy start to the day to positively impact a child's academic success and the theme for National

003School breakfast week was to dig into school breakfast and our schools had a great time celebrating that construction theme and making it their own and the photo you're looking at right there is at Deer Valley Elementary School where they brought in a backhoe to have some fun with and the you see the students and CMP workers posing appropriate for picks and showing that bad go off and just having a really great time and in the next slide you'll see some more pictures from our different schools the students and and employees and staff celebrating National School breakfast week and Hoover City Schools amazing proud Child Nutrition program staff serves at least 25 students 25. five hundred students 2500 students a healthy breakfast at our schools each morning to give their day of learning started off right

006El students in a language before it would be for students who needs speech language services but there can also be a time when they merge when students we both speech language to a thousand Services as well as be a filter so we wanted to show our collaboration on how Sops and EO Specialists can work together to make sure that we're not over identifying these students as well as under identifying them and making sure that we provide both services that they need to gain the English proficiency that they need as well as collect industry terrorism because you need to instead of speech [Applause] and the next recognition is for Miss Kelly Grandy a river Chase Elementary School uh teacher who was selected as the Drummond teacher of the month for December she is a first grade

011the same way but they're being recognized today for all the winning they were able to do at the state tournament uh if it didn't set a record it was uh right at close to a record for our school they're putting five finalists in their state tournament and we had two winners uh this year uh will Conlin and Rashad berts and then we had Bradley Williams and Jackson Mitchell and Kyle Oliveira who were runner-ups and their weight class uh so they've truly represented uh Spain Park well and we also on the end of shot raise your hand uh we also have that's Spain Parks uh Finland winner as well that represents our team so so proud of them and everything they've accomplished this year congratulations [Applause] very impressive to see you guys one of my younger

012kids left a little bit but you see the spirit of the things I don't know if we'll have as many uh parents as we did for the fifth grader since you guys driving all that but if we have any of the parents if you're here if you raise your hand or stand there you go great representation Scott laughs just making sure this bug is here coach thank you all thank you gentlemen thank you very much congratulations [Applause] and that concludes the recognitions for this evening but now there is a special board presentation um Dr Charles Hickman Who was appointed to the very first super Board of Education in 1987 has joined us tonight to share an update to his book called the history of the Hoover City school system which he recently completed with the

013assistance of Dr Ron Dotson and welcome back to you Dr Hitman for Hebrew City Schools thank you [Applause] I know you will you're fast that's getting a long speech out there super new Fowler and the board members thank you for the opportunity to uh allow Ron and me to tell you about our new book which is an updated version of the history of the Hoover School System and it was published in 2022 several years ago the Hoover Historical Society asked me to prepare a document related to the formation and major issues associated with starting the school system and so I took that on as a challenge and after several months of research the book which was titled the same history of the Hoover City school system is published in 2017. when the book was presented

014to the superintendent and the board um I recognized a number of people who had been involved with the formation of the school and had been very active in making sure that the message was gotten out that Uber needed the school system so the first one is soon enough and she's over here I would recognized to received she chaired a committee Who present the need for us through the system and Clay Anderson who was on the city council at that time was charged with leading the effort to get the school system approved in developing the information associated with this I had a lot of sources one of the major ones was articles in newspapers and in the 2017 document the most articles came from the Birmingham News and the Hoover Sons now I know you know

015who is associated with that so I would like to recognize also John Anderson for all of his work and likely to keep keep on keeping on them mm-hmm delivered here also sent me all kinds of information and we got to the point where he was sending me information on a month to month basis and all of those had been integrated into the into the system reviewer and photographer so I was wondering if anyone else here that was Associated way back in the school system and not many of us several family members up here who have supported me and the school system for for many years people ask me were there any obstacles associated with forming the school system well to come to mind who didn't have any schools and we didn't have any money so

016we hired a superintendent Dr Mitchell and he was on the schedule to be here but he called about noon and said he was not feeling well so he decided not to come so he negotiated getting the first six schools into the system and then the city council uh annexed Rocky Ridge so what I like to say is we were on our way well and since 2017 and I'm sure everybody on the board will recognize this education systems in the United States have faced many challenges primarily the covid-19 pandemic curriculum issues and many others however the board has addressed all of these and and many more so updating the 2017 history book seemed like the worthy endeavor however once again two obstacles were there one I hadn't been involved with the system over a number of

017years and I didn't know who was going to write the update reluctantly superintendent powder okay Ron Dotson partial retirement and once again the problem was solved so I'd like to have gone come up and talk about the update information and giving to give a copy of the book for each of you and again thank you for this opportunity [Applause] and just a note that Dr Hickman is donating five dollars for the sale of every book to the Hoover City Schools um the updated Edition includes the addition of the Riverchase Career Connection Center The District's experience during the covid-19 pandemic renovation of the old Bluff Park School building the superintendent transition that brought Dr Fowler to our Shores and the continued growth of the city and its impact on the school system um in closing I'd

018like to share a short passage from the book's conclusions so spoiler alert um at the time of this updated edition's completion in the fall of 2022 the Hoover City School System had just begun its 35th year of academic academic progress like all human endeavors there have been times of Triumph tragedy advancement and adversity an entire book could be written for each of the 34 years that have passed since the school doors opened under the leadership of the Hoover Board of Education in 1988. this work can only tell parts of that long history but this account that the school systems rise from a failed Community vote to a nationally recognized High achieving school district is a story worth remembering thank you very much [Applause] thank you thank you very much while Debbie's passing that out Dr

019Hickman's pictures up here on the wall a few years back um he remains available I have this cell phone I've called him many times and shared lunch and as a mentor to a board member has been an awful lot thank you for being here and continuing what you did so much thank you very much thank you Dr Hickman thank you very much we we lament that uh Bob couldn't be with us today it's always enjoyable to be with him and to be with you and Ron always to be with you here and we really appreciate those that had such an impact on the school district at its Inception to being here tonight also and for your contributions to education thank you so very much you know businesses a lot of great people that work here

020that work really hard so it makes our job super easy all right thank you very much that was wonderful um all right we will now move on to the consent agenda Dr Fowler thank you Miss tajni thank you board there are six items on the consent agenda for your consideration this evening the first is a set of minutes the regular meeting that what that occurred February 14 2003 the second is policy pipeline revisions and our January meeting you were presented policies for first readings and for revisions I am going to be recommending that they'll be approved in this consent agenda the summer work schedule as you know historically in the summer our district goes to four 10-day work days this would begin June 5 and end on July 24th an agreement with the YMCA for

021after school daycare the YMCA after school Academy also bids for retrofits to our school buses for air conditioning if all of our buses come in on time this August and through these retrofits we will begin next year with only 12 buses that do not have air conditioning for our students also the disposal of obsolete items and these obsolete items are Chromebooks that have been replaced but what I do recommend approval of the consent agenda you have a motion to approve any questions or comments all in favor any opposed consent agenda is approved thank you Miss Tosh you thank you board the next item for your consideration or our Personnel action items Mrs Williams and Dr Peg Davidson are here if you have any questions I said Ms Williams was here she was sitting right there

022before I put my head down but Dr Pat Davidson is here and I'm sure she can field any questions that you have I do recommend approval of the Personnel actions listed before you so I have a motion to approve the Personnel actions as recommended by the superintendent second any questions or comments all in favor any opposed Personnel actions are approved thank you Mr Toshi thank you board the next items for your consideration are business action items this time I will ask our csfo Ms Michelle McKay to come and to brief you on these items Ms McKay Dr summary and general purpose financial statements for the month ended January 31 2023 for FY 23 54 of budget Revenue has been received for the month end of January 31 2023. I mentioned last month that December and

023January we'll see fluctuations in current year versus prior year revenues due to the timing of cash receipts around the holidays historically Hoover City schools has received the majority of the revenue generated from Avalon taxes October through March with a notable drop in collection for remainder of the year the results of operations represent four months of activity accordingly we would anticipate having spent approximately 33 percent of the budget for recurring expenditures at this time general fund expenditures are 33 of the budget for the four months of activity the current month's Reserve is 11.27 months special Revenue fund expenditures for four months of activity were 9.2 million or 37 percent of the budget remember the majority of federal funds are expensed during the school year and requests for reimbursement occur months and arrears I would also like

024to share with you that the cash disbursements for January 2023 5 million 393 663.39 and payroll for February 2023 12 million 368 661.52 thank you Ms McKay board I do recommend approval of the business action items as presented by Ms McKay to have a motion to approve the business action items as recommended by the superintendent second in questions all in favor all right let me opposed business actions are approved we're going to take just the time out Ms McKay our liaison from the city council is here and has an announcement that he would like to make this time I'd like to recognize Mr Stephen Clinton good evening everyone thank you very much for allowing me to be here as your liaison Council that's my honor to cheer Eddie um one thing that I'm glad we

025had this history about who received schools kind of appropriate for today uh I can't think of anything more heartfelt and time-consuming and frustrating and to be a board of education member because it is tough they don't get paid a dime and every one of y'all should be commended he asked me how bad is this going to be I said it's a piece of cake don't worry about it and to his and to this day his wife will not talk to me ever again that being said we do what we do every year the board education is Not Elected like other cities it's appointed by the city council it's the only thing the city has to do besides funding or giving a small portion of their budget that that we do we don't interfere with them

026they do their own thing and they do a great job that being said every year we have a five-year sagger terms someone rolls off or they reapply and whether they reapply or not we still have an application process so what's going to happen is starting tomorrow morning at eight o'clock the link to apply online will be on the city of Hoover website the Pio will also put it out to all the neighborhood Facebook pages as well that application process deadline will be through March 27th at 5 pm the week of the 3rd of April we'll have interviews um and then our appointment will be made at our council meeting on April the 17th and that'll be it so we're looking forward to it again thank you for your service those that re-up as well we

027appreciate it and thank you for your time Dr him boys here thank you thank you Steve thank you very much thank you Miss McKay if you'll return back to the microphone in case there are any questions for the next action item for the next item for your consideration is a bid for supply of uniforms and equipment for Hoover High School and theater middle schools I will tell you this at Mrs McKay has looked over the bid has approved it that everything is fine and in order if you have any questions from Ms McKay or Ms McKay's or anything you would like to add to that so at this time board I do recommend the bid for supply of uniforms and equipment for Hoover High School and feeder middle schools and Equipment as recommended by Dr

028Fowler so move second any questions all in favor any opposed the bid is proof thank you thank you board thank you Ms Tyson thank you Ms McKay uh Mr Wilson if you'll make your way to the to the microphone just a second aboard the next item for your consideration is the rejection of the bid for cosmetology and barbering renovation at rc3 and if the board does approve the rejection of this bid uh Mr Wilson can talk about next steps uh Mr Wilson if you would give us just a little background of why we're rejecting this bid and what steps if the board does decide to reject this bid next steps for us as a school district okay so uh cosmetology evolving renovation we had scheduled for this summer at rc3 we did that project out

029we bidded up to seven different companies and difficulty in getting people to be interested in this project we had two commit to bidding the project definitely only receive one bed so the bid that we received was from a Jared construction we don't have any familiarity with them but that was the only paper escaped the bid that we received was for 625 thousand dollars now bear in mind when we developed this project we had the estimates done we anticipated construction costs being around 360 thousand dollars so it came in nearly twice the bedroom budget amount so we'd like to reject the bids see if we only got one bidder we can do that and then negotiate with that company if we choose to but also I can do it I can negotiate with other contractors as

030well to try and get that project cost down I'll plan with you rejecting the bin I'll go tomorrow and start that negotiation project uh process with the contractors that are available and interested thank you Miss Wilson in case there's a question is if you would state board at this time I do recommend the rejection of the bid for rc3 cosmetology bar renovation I have a motion to reject the ability barbering renovation as recommended by the superintendent second any questions or comments all in favor any opposed this bid is rejected thank you Matt thank you aboard the last item last action item uh is seeking your approval for a job description for a coordinator of administrative Services I think you know that we have been working very diligently trying to reorganize and staff our central office

031we have gone without several key positions uh that uh help not and will not be filled in the recent in in the near future most notably assistant superintendent and there's some others that from our organizational chart that you've seen that we have not chosen to feel at this time we do do feel that the workload on the administrative side of the org chart does need some help at this time and I do would like to recommend your consideration and approval for a job description for a coordinator of administrative services you have a motion to approve the job description for the position of coordinator of administrative Services as recommended by Dr Fowler second um any questions from the board about this position all in favor be opposed the job description is approved thank you Miss Tyson

032and thank you board at this time we'll move into the superintendent uh reporting and information items I would like to call Ms McKay back to the microphone and Podium at this time and to present with the first report thank you at the end of each fiscal year keep in mind we have an independent audit this year's independent audit was done by Carl Riggs and Ingram CPAs so I would like to ask for grant grant Shumpert and Andrew waits to come up and present their report for fiscal year 2022. Dr Fowler board members thank you very much for having us here tonight I would grab the three ring binder we'll kind of go over some highlights I know this is everybody's favorite topic so we're trying to make it pretty brief the first tab you'll see

033it says report that's the audit report and it includes the audit opinion the main thing I'll say tonight is a dotted opinion is an unmodified opinion which is a clean opinion that's certainly the one that you would want and that's the best one that you can receive another interesting point about the audit report itself is that the SCP has reorganized it so if you compare the report to last year or any other year you would see that the opinion was probably buried down on a third page after all the other information so they've reorganized it and put it you know it's the most important information so they put it at the very very beginning of the report so you see that you'll read it in a clean opinion as I said before flip over a

034couple tabs of basic financial statements we'll go over a few highlights as you know there are two sets of financial statements one is based on Full Court accounting and the other one is fund accounting so you have your governmental funds and general funds we'll focus on the total accounting which is government-wide financial statements this evening that's on page six which is essentially the balance sheet one of the main differences here if you see up at the top due from the governmental entities eight million 596 thousand dollars there was an increase of 1.3 million dollars this year it is from receivables for the education civilization fund that was not in the prior year as well as if you scroll down a few more lines to the capital assets you'll see building improvements 346 million that increased

03510.4 million there's a variety of projects that were completed during the year one of the biggest ones in that number uh was some bathroom Renovations that were done throughout the district so that contributed to that increase if you flip over another page to page seven some of the biggest changes here were in the net oped liability and the net pension liability and then that opeb liability decreased 17 million and then that pension liability decreased 41 million dollars and that's essentially due to the most recent Actuarial evaluation it's a lot of computations that go into that but also the Investments that are held at RSA did a lot better during 2022 than they did the previous year one more page over is the statement of activities and that's the income statement for the government-wide so it

036includes full cruel revenues and expenditures you know seal on the left hand side you have 193 million dollars in expenses if you scroll over to the right charge it for services offerings and contributions and capital grants and contributions those are the revenues for each of those activities that you see going down the page instructional Services instructional support So this gives you a good idea of what it costs the board to operate and then what revenues are coming in that are specifically attributed to those services so charges for services increase was 14 and a half million dollars for 2022 that was an increase of four million dollars over the prior year and the majority of that was in instructional services that million five million 148 000 and there was some coded money that was included in

037that total as well as it was um increased food costs in the auxiliary services so you see 17 million thousand dollars there was inflation during the year a lot of costs of food went up to in that year so it was also a lot more purchased food that was going on with students being back in you know on site we go across to the revenues now charges for services Fourteen and a half million dollars that number increased four million dollars back to a normal school year activities are going on more people are back at school one more column over operating grants and contributions total of 97 million dollars that increased five million dollars and the two things that were primarily attributed that increased versus State funding for Teacher stabilization as well as some of the

038federal money that I mentioned before for covet go over to a couple more pages that's the governmental funds financial statements that I mentioned before I don't think we'll really spend too much time on that there's also some reconciliations between the two sets of financial statements because their basis county is different now if you scroll over you'll see lots and lots of pages of notes there's a lot of important information in that that supports the numbers in the financial statements but there's no reason to focus on any of that in my opinion this evening there's also some required supplementary information there's schedules for Budget actual there's some schedules for your pension in your opeb liabilities a lot of numbers that support financial statements the last thing that I think is important top relatively the very last

039tab internal controls and compliance there are two internal control and compliance reports each year and the second one has to do with the single audit which is the federal compliance audit and that again is a clean opinion as well on the compliance and on the internal control server compliance let's go over to page 64. that kind of shows a summary of the results of the audits if you see down at the kind of the middle of the bottom of the page there's two programs that were offered special education cluster and the education stabilization fund again we had a clean opinion on compliance and as well as internal control of the compliance for the single audit and then if you flip that to the back page you get a folder there there's something that looks like

040this this is just some required Communications that were required by Ogden centers to communicate the majority of this information is just general information helps that our responsibilities Auditors support responsibilities as the client newly implemented Accounting Standards if there were any any difficulties with management or completing the audit which we had none clearly as well as any significant estimates that are going into the financial standards our evaluation of us so that is pretty much all we have we also did a separate engagement for local schools it wasn't an audit but it was a compliance we went and tested some you know policies and procedures whether or not certain schools were provided by those and results if you have a copy of that as well if anybody has any questions we'll certainly be happy to answer those

041this is a appreciation I realize you'd appreciate it we have to do it for buses and everything but generally since we're not taxed what is the appreciation the depreciation is spread out if you go back to page eight it's gonna be spread out evenly across the difference so if you have buses it's going to be an auxiliary depending on where the assets are housed is how it's allocated so it's allocated as an expense and your overall government-wide financial statements to each activity but when you're taxing income is depreciated item becomes appreciated to come to serial value right not necessarily here because we're not writing at all so that was kind of my question right yeah so there's no tax impact or anything but it's treated the same it's you know you put an asset on

042your books and you use it for you know a bus you use it for 20 years you depreciate it over those 20 years and it just has treated as an expense on your books and in your financial standards so there's really another impact I would like to say a very special thank you to CRI for the work that they do uh when they come in uh they come and count and uh it's like they're here forever but they're most welcome here I didn't want it to sound that way we realized we're very disrupted and we're very appreciative with everybody no you're not disruptive at all I'm being facetious when I the worst when I said the camping you're more than welcome here at any time and I also wanted to add that uh we're very

043appreciative that you are on speed dial in case we have questions throughout the year that we can ask you opinions about some of the things and policies and procedures as we follow them and I want everyone to know that we appreciate that also thank you thank you anybody else okay thank you very much and a very special thank you to Ms McKay who does an outstanding job managing a 200 million dollar budget [Music] [Applause] the next report will be presented by Dr Robbins Dr Robbins Dr Fowler Miss tasney board thank you so much for the opportunity to come and present some mid-year data I certainly appreciate the opportunity to give you a mid-year gauge for how our students are performing academically I'm going to kind of do this in three parts I'm going to first

044review just very briefly a few terms be sure that we're using the same language secondly I'll show you exactly where our students are mid-year and then finally I'll end up with some next steps and some takeaways first of all I'd like to talk about the term Benchmark assessment um benchmark assessments are math and reading tests that our students take kindergarten through eighth grade three times a year fall winter and spring and the purpose of those assessments is to gauge our students academic progress through throughout the year so we're not just doing it one time a year we're doing it three times a year so for grades k through eight we use I ready um you you may remember that in grades 9 through 12 we we used to use Scantron that was a state product

045that's no longer supported or provided and so now for our Benchmark assessing purposes we use I ready kindergarten through eighth grade we did adopt a and and use a new resource called Horizon for grades 9th and 10th grade we will do that twice a year fall and spring and that is a act focused Benchmark assessment and so in the spring I'll be able to provide you with information about how our students did with the Horizon again which is focused on the act so for our purposes tonight we'll use these I ready results to determine if our students are on track to meet their their end of the year assessment goals and grades two through eight which will happen on the acap also we use the term National percentile ranking which Compares our students to other

046students who are who are taking the same test similar age at the same time of the year so of course higher scores are needed in the winter and the spring in order to continue to grow so if a student will if they're at the same in order to stay at the same percentile ranking they have to keep growing in order to do that the bar is raised each time they take one of these assessments um it's always difficult to determine um what on grade level is in math and in reading and so it's very hard to find a common term to use or a common standard to use to determine on grade level so there is no standard definition we use the 50th percentile and we have since 2015. so on or above the 50th

047percentile means that a student is on grade level and then in a similar way we need to decide um how to determine students who are in need of our most intensive intervention this will be students that are in the lowest 25th percentile we call that the first quartile so they're significantly below level and they should be receiving more intensive forms of academic intervention and then finally growth after taking the i-Ready assessment in the fall each student is assigned a growth Target for the year based on how they did in the fall and so mid-year we look at if they have if they have achieved half of that annual growth so the iready will give us a fall to winter to Spring growth we call that same year growth however the state measures end-of-year growth according

048to the acap and that would be considered acap last year compared to acap this year when we would call that year to year growth um so of course the data that's presented tonight has to do with the same year growth fall to winter growth so how are our students performing let's go ahead and look at this chart and I'll give you an opportunity to look through it and then we can summarize it just a bit um in English language arts from the fall to the winter our students have grown by two percent from 65 percent to 67 percent and then in math from 62 to 65 this is the percentage of students who are on grade level or above so that's the growth of two percent in language arts and in math three percent and

049as a measure um of sort of comparing mid years to Mid years you can see there are another three years worth of mid-year comparisons there as well um starting pre-covered and so you can see that um our students have um met or exceeded pre-covered proficiencies according to the this mid-year measure we're one percent off there in math from 65 to 60. to 66. but we have a three-year growth in math and then this these are the proficiencies by school both in math and English language arts yeah this is correct we use targeted funding for Title One service well there's correct it qualifies for for the targeted systems that's correct some of these previous slide in this one it's k through eight we're talking about only not correct k through eight okay correct k through eight

050I read it so that first slide was 50 or above so we want those numbers to be larger so now this is the bottom quartile so we want these numbers to be smaller and we want them to be shrinking and so you can see from Fall to Mid to mid-year winter we've reduced the bottom quartile by two percent in English language arts and by three percent in math so we're moving in the right direction you can also compare the bottom quartile to our previous mid-year even pre-covered mid-year and you can see that we've made some great gains and this is the bottom quartile numbers by school for Math and English language arts so what percentage of our students are on track to meet their growth targets for the year you can see the highlighted column

051that says mid-year winter 2023 is our current data so this is the current percentage of students who are on track to meet their annual growth Target so 63 percent in English language arts 64 in math we saw a large bump last year because we had just returned to uh to in to a more consistent schedule and more consistent instruction and so we did see a large bump last year and I'm pleased to say that we've been able to maintain those growths this year as well and you can see both of those growth exceeds the pre-covered growth targets and then finally I'd like to point out that last column there one of the ways that we make progress on our achievement gaps in English language arts and math is by shrinking the growth Gap the growth

052Gap is the percentage of white students who met their growth goal minus the percentage of black students who met their breathable so that difference there and we want that difference to be very very small or zero or even negative right so the smaller the that growth Gap the more progress you're making on the achievement path and so I'm pleased to say that those numbers are looking very strong as well this is the percentage of students that are on track to meet their growth goal by school so finally what have we learned by looking at this data we have met as data teams several times we actually have a data meeting next week here at the here at the district level with our schools we can get a great deal of data from this from these

053mid-year measures our principles go back and they look specifically at their data at their classrooms at their students and they create plans to further intervene with students who have needs for the remainder part of the school year according to this measure our mid-year data continues to show pre-coveted achievement levels and reading and in math and we're moving in the right direction the things that need to get larger are getting larger and the things that need to get smaller are getting smaller I am encouraged by that also it's worth noting that when you go back and look at the mid-year growth for this time last year these results actually almost exactly mirrored the mid-year growth that we had last year and so that's very encouraging as well this data also shows just like I said some

054areas of this and some opportunities that we have for reading and for math for all of our students so finally what are our next steps again this is our fall winter and and and spring benchmarking we want our students to do really well on the acap and that's just around the corner that will begin um in in the month of April we want our students to finish strong and our teachers to finish strong we're going to continue to monitor the growth of all of our students to be sure that all of our students and our subgroups are making growths accordingly and then finally we will be using this data to guide some instructional decisions some for some of our professional development decisions that will be taking place for the rest of this spring as well

055as into the summer and then we will be establishing some of our academic priorities for the 23-24 school year so um that is our mid-year data I'm happy to stay here and answer any questions but thank you for the opportunity to share thank you Dr Robinson thank you thank you very much uh our board our next uh information report will be coming from our special education department uh I asked Ms Claire Jones Moore she's already she's already at these guys so thank you very much and I see you've got some backup with you tonight I do um if they need to come forward that'd be good too Mr Sherman thank you so much we appreciate the opportunity to share we have just a brief update our special needs program our preschool program at Trace Crossings

056is phenomenal in the last decade our numbers have increased we have doubled ink capacity currently we are serving about 130 preschoolers we've had an opportunity to see those those young young little ones we are finding that we need to move our program so that we have two sites and we have identified River Chase Elementary as a possible site for next year we anticipate that that um would you like to say something Miss Madonna we we anticipate that this program will continue to be exceptional it's just that we need two sites instead of one I contribute all of the success to Mr Quincy Collins Rebecca Crowe and that phenomenal staff so Dr Fowler if you have any questions we'll certainly answer those thank you Claire and I know that you've worked very diligently with this and

057I know you've worked collaboratively with uh Dr Dodson worked with this and uh speaking to the Riverchase community and for the opportunity to use available class space there I know that you involved Mrs medano uh as a data point in this discussion also so I think that you have looked at it very meticulously I think you've looked at it with the best interest of the students in the district at mine and I appreciate very much the things that you have done with this and board I want you to know what a great job that she does with our special education department where we are standard bearers for special education and that goes back to the direction that she gives this department Claire thank you so much for all the things that you do and the

058dedication that you have to our students into the district Miss Tosh if there are any questions anybody have any questions sure absolutely I know we had a public meeting on this one four years ago at church crossing the challenges have been brought out it's the community so you were able to design both of you have problems if you want to touch on that it was a big challenge so each year we receive a report card from the state one of the areas that we continue to find that we struggle is the preschool piece which is because it's difficult going out into the community you are correct we did talk about that but at that particular time we were simply going to move that to one location now I'm so excited to have the opportunity to

059expand the program to include that Spain Park feeder pattern and also provide extra space at Trace Boston so are there five or four classes right in the classroom so you're gonna move three or two or yes and split it kind of like that okay exactly that's great that's a good good problem continue the excellent um service I think that we have a robust program and I think that we will continue to to see more families move to Hoover thank you very much Miss Madonna Miss Madonna excuse me no I was going to say Ms tossney and accidentally said I apologize there's all of the reports and action items that I have for this evening her board meeting is scheduled for April 12th at 5 30. does anybody have public comments April 11th oh oh I'll

060go with the one that says April 11. April 11th thank you 2023 at 5 30. any public comment wonderful we're adjourned I love you foreign
