Yes, I just want to say thank you Christy and Diane for all of your hard work the words expressed everything that we know you do
and more I've been with Christy particularly for the last five years and Well, you know going through this these five years and she's so amazing. I always ask her. Where's your checklist? What's on your checklist? It's like it's she has it all planned out and knows everything before you know it So thank you all so much Diane. You keep us abreast on everything just as well student advisory council me Oh shit. Oh my favorite So yeah, so I'd like to say something to here Between Jackie and me. Oh sure. They cover a lot of detail But besides us They take care of our superintendent I'm
sure the minister sister-in-chief pretendants get a lot of support from them as well, and I thought when you start thinking about their responsibility and the job that they do and There's never a hole anywhere. I mean I know I couldn't do that. I Won't even attempt to try so thank you both so much. You know how much we appreciate you and And try to not give you any any kind of trouble they have to fix for us and I always have you keep us pretty straight and You do a wonderful job, and I know I know I speak for the superintendent Which I don't usually do but also speak for the assistant administrators in the back room and rest of the administrative staff you guys are the head of the head of the spear really
and Nobody would do anything without all the work you do so congratulations for this week You yep You are the wind beneath our wings. Thank you Next up we have audience participation, and I believe we do have somebody that signed up this evening Let's see is Brenda Everett here, okay. Thank you for joining us tonight The board greatly values feedback and perspectives from our community We will hear up to 30 minutes of non-agenda topics and up to 30 minutes of agenda topics per meeting and each speaker will Be limited to three minutes of speaking time It is a long-standing practice of the board to not address or respond during the public comment section of the agenda But please know that we are listening Would our first speaker please state your name and address for the
record My name is Brenda Everett, and I live at 9393 Ute Highway, Longmont and I am a former st. Vain Valley Board of Education member Northern, Colorado Bose's member a retired district middle school counselor and a concerned citizen and A few weeks ago as I was looking at the district website Trying to find a student performance. It caught my eye that there was a public review period for some new curriculum The health adoption particularly caught my eye because when I was on the board we worked for months on policy and procedures for sensitive topics and we did a lot of public participation and got a lot of input so I was rather disappointed and rather incredulous to see that two hours were allowed for public review of this curriculum I don't recall exactly what the
policy was when I was on the board But I believe there were several weeks while it was being piloted that the curriculum was made available for review Under the district strategic priorities the website states that it values partnership with parents guardians and the community But allowing for almost no public input on curriculum does not seem like much partnership So I was curious so I looked up some other districts Jeffco schools have public access for two weeks prior to an adoption They also have digital access to new curriculum and also for current curriculum they have links to publishers and curriculum overview Boulder Valley also has a digital access and Appointments for review for three weeks or more for most of their curriculum But by contrast st. Vrain links under curriculum for the current curriculum Simply leads
to state standards or district benchmarks and the reference that I could find for currently used curriculum We're only in the core subjects and there were really no links to find anything I had to do some digging to see what I could find and as a community member now I support our schools and much is expected from community members to support schools we get updates on building projects students achievements test scores, but as far as the day-to-day working of the schools Where it really comes down to where it's important teaching our children values and skills for the future and molding their character There's rarely very little information and as a retired teacher and counselor I know that values are in every lesson taught by every teacher And I think it's really important that the community knows
what we're teaching in past years. I felt like the opinion of this board and when I was on the board was for the community to The school's answer to the community But now it seems that the trend seems to be that the community just has to acquiesce to what the schools approve and I really would Respectfully request that you review your policies on practices on public review process and access to the district curriculum for Community members parents probably have more access, but as a community member. I don't thank you Thank you so much. All right next up. We have our superintendents report Yes, thank you I too would like to recognize not only Christy and Diana's our administrative assistants and the fabulous work They do but all of the administrative assistants across the entire school
district We have an incredible team who supports a lot of work And I often think that they should be recognized on bosses day instead of administrative assistants today Because they are the ones who actually tell us what needs to be done every day And we listen to them because if they're they're they're very smart about about the work and they keep us all very organized I'd also like to recognize our 25 year Bell employees Thank you so very much to the employees who have served in st Vrain for 25 years a quarter of a century have served in public education For that long or longer and also all of the work and all of the support and all of the impact They have had on thousands of children in our school district We also I'd
like to recognize our Innovation Center. We have hosted about 40 to 50 Superintendents and their teams from across the nation. We just continue to get requests to come and see the work that we're doing in st. Vrain so that People can learn from our work and can replicate the work in their districts or in their own contexts And we're very proud to share that work and to help strengthen public education across the nation We I had the honor of speaking at both the NYWAT Rotary Rotary last week And then this week at the NYWAT community association, so they have NYWAT community has a lot of school updates right now, and it was a pleasure to meet with those groups This morning we recognized our seniors on our student advisory council This is a group that
we work with all year they give us input into their student experience here in st. Vrain and We got to wish our seniors well and then honor them with a breakfast at our From our culinary students at the CETC and that was just a lovely event I also want to congratulate our drone team They to bring a lot of great recognition to our school district for that career pathway But also just to highlight the amazing things that students can do And they last week performed at ASU GSV Over the San Diego Bay there had to work with the Coast Guard to get permission But everywhere I go in the state and even nationally I hear about our student drone team. They are just incredibly impressive and they have invited all of us to a special
drone Presentation I believe next Monday night April 27th at 8 30 p.m At Westview so we invite the entire community to come out as well as anybody who works in our school district to see the work of our student drone team Thank you Thanks, Jackie Next up we have reports on first up 6.1 fiscal year 2026 March district financial statements Tony good evening President Gilligan members of the board and dr. Capuchin So I'm pleased to present to the board and our community the district's monthly financial statements through March of 2026 these financial statements can be found in the board packet tonight and Alongside all of our periodic financial statements will be available online at svvst org We had the opportunity to go through these financial statements a little more in depth at the board study
session that occurred earlier tonight at 515 In addition these financial statements were presented to our finance and audit committee last Monday The district maintains an executive summary dashboard and a green yellow red Scheme to highlight any major concerns. We do have a yellow triangle for this quarterly financial statement report Regarding our nutrition services fund as we have talked about in previous months To summarize the discussion points that we went over We discussed our lower cash and investment balances compared to this time last year as a result of some heightened one-time Amounts from last year that didn't occur this year alongside our increased budgeted spend down of reserves We touched on some other year-over-year variances as a result in changes in assessed valuation Increases in compensation and health insurance and amounts owed to one of our
charter schools as a result of their best grant that They got awarded to them We also spent some time talking about the nutrition the nutrition services fund its spend down of reserves and along With that some strategies that they've been able to implement successfully to help address some of their Budget concerns just kudos to them and their team They did some really hard work It was very difficult and very disciplined work that they did to be able to make those adjustments and so kudos to Katie Cosette and her her hurt her team Finally I give an update regarding the closure of Carbon Valley Academy and some logistics of surrounding that work I'd like to thank our top-notch accounting and reporting team for the aggregation and preparation of this report which again is available in the
board packet tonight and will be available at SVVSD org in the coming days. I'm happy to answer any questions at this time Thank you, Tony. Do board members have any questions? No, okay. Thank you so much. I appreciate you We went through this information at the finance and audit committee meeting on Monday and then just before this so we really appreciate the Transparency and all the detail that your team provides us. So thanks Tony Next up I think it's still you 6.2 fiscal year 26 third quarter public gifts to schools. Great. I've had a lot of celebrations tonight, and this is yet another one I'm proud to Give this report throughout the year the financial services department tracks gifts and donations to our schools By the community per board policy KCD public gifts to schools
In addition each quarter we bring forward a report on such gifts giving us the opportunity to acknowledge the generous contributions made To st. frame Valley schools by individuals PTOs booster clubs and local businesses and thank them for their generous support for the success of our students We received more than six hundred and eight thousand dollars in donations throughout the months of January to March 2026 this brings total donations for fiscal year 2026 to more than 1.4 million dollars This quarter was actually an unusually high Quarter due to a large multi-school district donation from the Weld County Trust back in January. You may have heard about There are a huge number of donors that a support that support our amazing students I just like to highlight a few just pick and choose a few of those
that we received this quarter For instance community members Jeffrey and Shelley Lund made a donation of $475 to support the art program at Skyline High School The Colorado Tech Shop donated four thousand dollars to Longmont High School to support their technology programming business partner while support LLC donated five hundred dollars to support the robotics program at Trail Ridge Middle and Amanda Norquist and Fanny Chan donated $5,000 for a sound system at Sunset Middle School These are just a few examples many more generous donations from PTOs booster clubs foundations local businesses and Community members can be found listed in the board packet and encourage you to peruse that at your convenience The support from our community has been phenomenal and we are deeply grateful for their continued support in contributing to the vision mission and the
educational Success and well-being of our students. Thank you Thank you, Tony. Do board members have any questions or comments? No, I feel grateful to live in this community. So thank you to all of the support and Thanks for the report Tony. Appreciate it Okay, next up six point three concurrent enrollment program update kale and Heidi Good evening President Gilligan members of the Board of Education Dr. Capuchin and thank us for allowing this opportunity to come and give you an update on concurrent enrollment Though it's a lot of the work that this has done is really part of our strategic priorities It's it's very much a key component of academic excellence by design And we're going to give a brief overview of the impact it's having on our students So concurrent enrollment is a Statewide program
and it allows access for our students to college credits and college courses Now this is important whether they're looking for an academic pathway or a pathway into a certificate or workforce Readiness the classes are taught by qualified teachers either at the college or our own teachers Which are adjunct become adjunct professor professors Which we really like a lot because they have already a lot of relationship built with the students you can see on the slide the Colleges and universities that we partner with Front Range Red Rocks CU Denver Metro State Ames Community College Front Range and we work really well with them and making sure that They are providing a very rigorous and engaging curriculum for our students Now they're at the last bullet there is a difference we have concurrent enrollment Which is basically
with our community colleges and dual enrollment. They separated it about ten years ago Is that with the four-year institutions? That's the basic difference, but there's some difference sometimes with the tuition that's paid out and What we've done and dr. Larson a great job with this over the years is we've kind of Negotiated with them and got that tuition right down to the community college rate As well, so really it's a it's really a great opportunity for our students These are examples of the courses now This is just a small sampling of the literally hundreds of courses that are offered in concurrent enrollment At multiple high schools our students have access to that academic part You can see the English composition public speaking college algebra And by the way, these are all guaranteed transferred courses, which
are very important That means they're guaranteed to transfer anywhere within the Colorado system, which we like a lot And then the other ones are offered Traditionally at CETC and the IC and they're more in the pathways of looking at it getting certificates are going on So if a student wants to really look at a certain niche or a pathway Certificate they can do that if they want to get some general education courses taken towards their Two-year or four-year degree they can do that as well and that's why we really like for our students to take those guaranteed transferred courses because then they're assured that and If you're a parent and you've had your students go through as you like it to because it cuts down on the tuition That you'll have to pay these are
we pay the tuition through st. Brain I want to thank Jamie real quick for this data that she compiled for us this Represents the really the significant and incredible growth of concurrent enrollment Since we brought it into the district anytime. I see these numbers. I had asked Jamie. I said come on He just can't be right now six times. She said six hundred and four percent increase in 13 years the 751 percent increase in number of students taking it and When I look at 412 students with 12 or more credits, that's a full semester of College that they didn't have to pay tuition more importantly parents don't have to pay tuition on that and it really sets them up For success. These are college-level courses And so they really have to be ready for the
rigor of this the independence of this too It really sets our students up not only Financially, but also I believe it gives them a mindset for their rate for post-secondary work. So really good We have over 1,700 students enrolled in over 3,000 courses this year so you can see the trajectory is very well for us and I believe it's going to continue to grow as we go on Before we go on to the next slide. I want to recognize somebody I've been working with very closely this year Heidi ringer Heidi has been before the board before and I've got to say honestly. She is one of the most hard-working Energetic positive people I know she is detail-oriented She gets on things right away all with the focus of students and student achievement and student well-being
She's gone out and visited students at these colleges to make sure that they're doing okay She set up office hours herself to go out and visit with them. That that is incredible to me Heidi will be trans and transitioning to overseeing concurrent enrollment I have no doubt that it's going to thrive under her leadership. So how do you I'll let you continue Thank you, Kale and thank you. Dr. Capuchin president Gilgen and all of the members of the board As this data illustrates that kale just showed you we have seen tremendous growth in concurrent enrollment over the last decade However, the true value of the program really extends far beyond the accumulation of just credits for many students This represents their first encounter with advanced advanced college level rigor successfully completing these courses builds confidence
and It shifts the narrative for many of these students who once viewed higher education as impossible But they now see it as a future and I saw that firsthand at Skyline High School Additionally concurrent enrollment provides a unique bridge to post-secondary education by leveraging our own SVVSD teachers who are qualified instructors when these courses are taught on our campuses by these teachers Really those students are receiving kind of an extra layer of familiar support and it really does ease them in their transition to college level expectations and as these duly enrolled students They also have access to the collegiate resources so they're able to go on to campus They can utilize instructional support services and many times these experience really help them get confidence And have build their self-efficacy to support the process of navigating
higher ed when they get out of our school systems So concurrent enrollment also can support the completion of industry certificates offered for us in many areas But things like health care or manufacturing and for other students They're just building their college transcript that applies directly toward either an associate degree or a four-year university pathway And last time I was here before the board I spoke briefly about the big three with regards to work-based learning well concurrent enrollment is also a portion of that and that's what? Contributes to the college credits area and credits earned by students through concurrent enrollment will go towards those 12 college credits in this area But also other programs like our AP programs our IB will also count toward those 12 And we are fortunate in our district to support all
of these programs and we remain committed to expanding access to all of Across all of these programs to ensure every student finds the right fit for their goals in my role as post-secondary Workforce readiness coordinator as Kaila mentioned I will also be overseeing concurrent enrollment next year And I really look forward to continuing to evolve this program to meet the needs of our students and prepare them for life When they leave our system, thank you for your time, and we're happy to answer any questions that you may have Do board members have any questions? Thank you for that report I Saw something that I was not familiar with and I'm so I'm assuming maybe someone else out there isn't what's the difference between? Concurrent enrollment and dual enrollment Yes, we both we both can answer
that so concurrent enrollment is with our community colleges So basically a two-year system the dual enrollment is with a four-year college and They can charge full tuition in dual enrollment They but what we've done is negotiated it down with the our partners see you Denver Metro State We pay the community college rate they want our students to go there But it was done many years ago because concurrent enrollment covered all the two and four-year institutions and the four-year institutions broke off That's a history of it You can imagine why they did it is the money they wanted their full tuition rate now They've come back and saw the value of working with a partner like st. Moraine That that is part of it, and that's really built into state legislation That's how the kind of
the determination was made so the concurrent enrollment again Just focuses on those two years, and if state legislation changes that may open up, but currently that's how it works Yeah President Gilligan yeah unless the other board have anything Kale I just would like to recognize your years and years of work in this space you have done some incredible work to advance learning opportunities for our students especially Access to coursework they might not otherwise Have access to through agile and through concurrent enrollment and dual enrollment opportunities. You've tracked on that work You've made sure that we have a good return on investment for our children and for our taxpayers in that space and Your work will be very much missed so thank you and Heidi Thank you for assuming some of the work that kale will
be doing when he finally retires We are terrible at retirement in st. Moraine But I know that you do work incredibly hard kale has been a good mentor in this space for you And I appreciate that you're going to pick up the sword and and carry it forward so thank you to both of you for your Information tonight and kale. Thank you so much for your service in st. Moraine. Thank you so much I've seen the kind of impact this has on our families, so thank you for your work Okay, next up we have consent items would any board members like to pull any of our consent items this evening No, that I'll ask for a motion to approve all consent items as listed in our agenda By me OSHA second and Jim Mrs. Babs.

at the middle school Middle high school obviously represents Lyons middle senior and then 540 at the high school level so we've had varied levels of experience in our system And what's exciting is we continue to recruit excellent talent every year and you can see we have outstanding numbers in our one through five years Almost half of our certified teachers have been with us Or have served as teachers for 11 or more years and many of them are tonight Many of them were recognized tonight in the 25 year bell, which is exciting so not only are we continuing to recruit? high Quality teachers we are also retaining high quality teachers, and we're also looking at the education levels of our teachers and over 75% of our teachers hold Degrees masters specialists or doctorate degrees so that
also goes to show The high talent that we have who people who continue to pursue education as they as they teach We'd also like to highlight that our certified staff are more than just certified teachers by day They're actively involved with our students outside of the school day supporting extracurricular and enrichment activities We currently have a hundred and fifty two of our certified staff members or high school coaches 192 of our certified staff our middle school coaches 96 certified staff performing arts teachers in over 900 total positions that involve extra duty clubs and activities Throughout our system that shows that our teachers are not only supporting our students during the day But also outside of the school day to extend those learning and important experiences that you get here in st. Vrain Valley schools as
board member Babs shared we also honor our guest teachers at this time of year we have four over 460 active guest teachers in our system included in that are hundred and fourteen Licensed retirees most of whom are here from the st. Vrain Valley school district We also like to recognize our guest teachers that support our schools on a regular basis serving over more than 80 days a year in our schools and even a large chunk that are working in our schools 20 to 79 days a year we have a great group of guest teachers in our system that go through rigorous training And they love our system they they love our schools they feel very supported and they keep coming back and we appreciate the work that they provide while our traditional certified teachers need
to be out As mentioned already we do a lot to honor our certified employees as evident by the 25-year bell ceremony Which was for certified teachers and also classified staff as well. Dr. Capuchin is Implemented commitment coins to the outstanding staff members throughout our system and has been out recognizing teachers throughout this year Two weeks ago the st. Vrain head foundation put on a wonderful Celebration of excellence event at Folsom field where we recognized over 60 amazing teachers in our system As you go throughout our school, you'll see lots of different school traditions and practices that recognize school teachers And those in departments are in their buildings with lots of traditions and as we just proclaimed we have teacher appreciation week coming up And soon upcoming as well during that first part of May would
be our retirement celebration that is inclusive of all of our Employees who have dedicated their service in st. Vrain Valley schools, but will of course our teachers as well and we thank you for Supporting with our proclamations and again, we can't say enough how grateful we are to have such Amazing certified employees and guest teachers that serve our students each and every day and we thank all of you for the role that you play And supporting their success too. We're available if you have any questions Thank you, Amanda Two board members have questions. No question just comments Dr. Capuchin Said in her welcome ceremony earlier in the school year how she values our teachers and I saw I see that Just about every day In her interactions and her her statements to the teachers sometimes
teaching can be a thankless job I do know that I have been in that position before so you know, I look think back to some of the teachers that were very impactful to my life to the Decisions I made the career that I went into and those teachers to this day I can tell you their names many of them and it's not necessary just one because everyone had everyone had a different type of impact so Just like she talked about this morning to our students to go where they mentioned teachers that They felt like had a huge impact on their lives and their education to thank them email them Text them or whatever they need to do because sometimes just those Those thank yous can go a long way in so many lives So we
think our teachers we think our substitute teachers for being there for our students and being their most important every day and showing up So, thank you Yeah, I'll agree with with me. Oh shut, you know you guys the teachers the staff the faculty You guys are just so awesome. So thank you for what you do I had the pleasure this last weekend to go to the prom at Frederick High School and you know you see it out there the the principals are are dealing blackjack and you know playing basketball games and just having a great time with the kids and That's what it's all about. You know, so thank you for what you guys do. Thank you Thank you, Amanda. Thank you. We need to motion on that. Sorry about that So if can I
get a motion to approve a point one recommendation adoption of resolution proclaiming teacher appreciation week and substitute teacher Appreciation week may 4 3 so moved second and Jim Mrs. Babs. Yes, mr. Berthold. Yes, mrs. Gilligan. Yes Mrs. Horanek. Yes, mr. Lechuga. Yes, mrs. Solomon absent mrs. Weiss absent Okay, next up a point two recommendation middle school and high school health curriculum adoption Diane Well, good evening president Gilligan members of the board Superintendent Caputian. Thank you so much It truly is an honor to stand before you this evening to present a recommendation that represents many months of evaluation collaborative piloting and amazing teaching We are here to request the formal adoption and purchase of a new suite of health curriculum for our middle school and high school grades These are the essential health skills for middle
school fourth edition essential health skills for high school fifth edition and human development relationships and sexual health companion for high school both from the good heart Wilcox company Health education is a fundamental pillar of student success It is critical to lifelong wellness and students today are navigating a complex world We're understanding a multitude of information that directly impacts their lives is critical our Recommendation aligns with our district strategic priority of providing rigorous well-aligned standards curriculum instruction and assessment The selection is the result of a comprehensive process that began in the fall of 2025 when we formed a committee of dedicated middle school and high school teachers Who were tasked with evaluating resources that would serve the diverse? Student body in our system at the beginning of the pilot each teacher sent home a letter to
our parents Notifying them of our intended pilot at that time They were invited to reach out to review the curriculum firsthand many of our parents took us up on that offer and I had the opportunity to work with them directly to Take a look at the digital materials or the written textbook materials during the 2025 26 school year We did conduct a year-long pilot involving 27 teachers and approximately 2,000 students This pilot represented every middle school and every high school in our school district Providing us with a wealth of data to inform our recommendation Our team also administered surveys to collect information from teachers students and parents The overall feedback from these three groups was very positive Teachers appreciated the comprehensive nature of the program and close alignment to state standards One of the most
significant highlights of our staff was the flexibility of the lesson components Which allowed them to tailor the instruction to the specific needs of their unique classrooms? Each teacher praised the robust array of teacher materials which includes presentation slide decks online textbooks various assessment tools to monitor student growth for our diverse student learners the program provides essential resources and supports for our multilingual learners as well a variety of differentiation tools for our students to meet the wide-ranging needs our Students reported that the lessons were clear interesting and relevant to their lives they found the online textbook easy to navigate and praised the charts graphs Infographics and diagrams. I've actually never seen that in a student survey before But they really like the text features in the book. It gave them a lot of really deep information
Information Students were particularly engaged in the activities when their teachers invited them to discuss debate and clarify their thinking The students expressed that the health class was valuable Mostly because they learned things they did not know before in the winter of 2026 we opened up our materials for public review at an evening open house for staff families and community members Families indicated that the materials were age appropriate most importantly created Opportunities to connect with their children the parents also noted that their child showed Strong understanding of the concepts when discussing these topics at home To give you a firsthand understanding of the impact of these materials I would really like to introduce two members of our team who were instrumental to this process The first is Peyton Garcia from Altona Middle School and next will
be Abby Hicks from Meade High School Good evening. Dr. Capuchin and members of the board. Thank you Diane I'm excited to be here tonight to share my support of for the adoption and purchase of the essential health skills curriculum from Good Heart Wilcox, I'm Peyton Garcia and for the last five years I've taught health and PE at Altona Middle School My passion for health education first began in my time as a St. Mary and Valley School District student Thankfully, I had health teachers that recognized the value of health education and taught it with integrity and purpose Since then we've seen a tremendous need for increased time and resources dedicated to middle school health and physical education Middle school students have and are currently living through some of the hardest times of their lives The information
resources and skills need to match the demand of the conflicts that they face Health education has changed from textbook read aloud and scary pictures to real-life skills practice and implementation More than ever our students are exposed to situations that they need to be taught how to handle ideally before they are put into that situation Students need a safe environment to practice safe decision-making Advocacy goal-setting self-management and communication When we shift our focus to developing the skills of our students opposed to preparing them to recite information We're working to support the whole student beyond their K-12 years Good Heart Wilcox has carefully crafted a curriculum that aligns with that vision and grows with our students in our search for curriculum We explored several options. We were looking for a well-rounded system that was aligned with Colorado
health standards was medically and scientifically Updated and accurate and was culturally relevant to the needs of our students We found that the GW curriculum was built with the standards at the core It has the cultural relevance that we were seeking and is research-based and scientifically accurate Additionally, there are frequent updates made to the instructor resources to ensure that the needs as the needs of our students change We can keep up as you know in any classroom You're gonna have a diverse group of learners. One of my favorite parts of this curriculum is the accessibility We have the option to level texts use interactive visual features and access differentiated reading guides It was important to me that we found and selected a curriculum that supported all of our students Furthermore every textbook page student activity and
assessment is available in English and in Spanish Throughout same rain. We have many dedicated health educators some of which I was fortunate enough to work with throughout this process I believe that the purchase and adoption of this curriculum will put us in a position to better support those educators But more importantly those who may be reluctant to health education This curriculum has intentional lesson and unit sequences easy to use features and more instructor resources than you could ever need We do not currently deliver middle school health education in a consistent manner across the district Purchasing this curriculum is the first step to balancing the quality of health education that our students are receiving The structure of the essential skills health curriculum is the same throughout middle school and high school Providing further consistency for our
students regardless of which schools they attend the GW health curriculum allows us to continue to move forward and how we support our students in their health journey and I am Confident that the purchase and adoption of this curriculum is a worthwhile investment for our students and our teachers. Thank you Good evening. Thank you for not only being here for the work that you do for our children and our students each and every day I'm honored to have the opportunity to be here with you tonight to share my thoughts Around the moving forward with the adoption of our new secondary health curriculum. My name is Abby Hicks I teach health and physical education at Mead High School I'm also our lead secondary health teacher for st. Vrain over the last two years I've had the opportunity
to collaborate with Diane Lauer and an amazing and an amazing health task force team of highly privileged and honored qualified health educators We have spent hours discussing Reflecting and piloting a curriculum that is not only best for students but supports Teachers as well. I would like to share that art with I would like to share what our chosen good heart Wilcox curriculum has looked like in my classroom and why I support the adoption of this curriculum moving forward At the end of the day. I'm always asking myself Is this meaningful for kids not just compliant not just standard-based? But something they actually will carry with them when they leave my classroom I always talk about this thing called life and how the choices they make every single day impact who we hope they become My
students understand that we as caring adults in their world care about them and worry about them my students understand that Let me go back here. My students understand that we as caring adults in their lives worry about them Have a concern for their safety and the choices they make but not necessarily worry about them when life is going well It's when life gets really hard that we want them to we want to have to want to ensure They have healthy and sustainable skills to help them navigate these challenging times Normalizing conversations around struggle and that these moments in life are normal life happens But there's hope that when we can there's hope that when we can better when we get better at stress We do the hard things even better What I found with the
curriculum is that it just it does just that the meaningful lessons and assessments give me a strong Foundation to support students. However, it also allows the flexibility for me to show up as their teacher For my students needs I'm not spending hours trying to build everything from scratch like I've done in the past I'm able to focus on facilitating conversations building relationships and creating a space where students feel safe To engage in topics that really matter topics that are relevant for them and That's what we've seen. That's where we've seen the biggest impact. My students are talking they're thinking they're making connections To their own lives. They're asking questions Challenging ideas and building skills around decision-making and personal responsibility that go far beyond a single unit or lesson Another piece that really stands out is
the connection beyond the classroom This curriculum curriculum naturally opens the door for students to have conversations at home Whether that's with parents guardians trusted adults and in my experience those conversations are where a lot of the real learning occurs From my perspective the GW health curriculum isn't just a set of lessons and worksheets It's a tool that supports the whole student and also provides a strong consistent curriculum for all high schools across the district This curriculum is a tool for teachers to build confidence to plan and to look and to deliver meaningful lessons and assessments That engage students in a real way that helps extend learning and application into their day-to-day lives At the end of the day this curriculum helps teachers do what we're here to do support teacher to support students Not just
academically but as humans navigating this thing called life. I'm grateful for your time. Thank you And I am absolutely indebted to the incredible team of teachers who made part of that task force and who also implemented during the the entire pilot year and Abby and Peyton your passion and Professionalism for this content and for what you do for kids It truly is an inspiration and so I applaud you and thank you. It's been awesome And So now I open it up for any questions you may have for me or Peyton Do board members have any questions? I Had a question. I hate to put you on the spot. I really liked how you talked about Connecting the curriculum to the home Yes, I was wondering if you could share an example of that if it's
possible or how that works Yeah In each one of the modules there are worksheets that specifically provide activities to take home and some of them connect to Whether it's nutrition or stress like Abby was talking about You know talk about a time when you were dealing with stress and it might be saying here are some strategies that we Used in our classroom just to start that conversation at home I don't know if you have anything to add The family connection piece I'm always very transparent with my students and I really want them these Conversations need to continue outside of this classroom. And so like Diane mentioned they do have guided Studies and worksheets that kids can take home. It's like sit down with a parent sit down with a trusted adult and discuss with them
How they used to navigate stresses or identify the stressors that they had in there back when you know They were growing up and it really just opens the door to bring that value system in right when we're talking about Getting kids to think for themselves Their decision-making comes from those values those conversations that they have at home And so with stress and and when when time gets really hard We want them to reach out to home and we want them to have those trusted adults So it's whether it's acknowledging their trusted adult system But having those conversations and just saying what was it like when you were a kid? Which is that the little things have changed a bit But that's kind of the the goal of those take-home parent involvement activities. Okay. Thank you
Yeah, I think maybe I've seen this with worksheets that have come home with my elementary school kids Mostly I think about bullying but I think you know, those things really actually do Create conversations in our household and I really do appreciate the district Making that an intentional effort for families to be involved. So thanks. Thank you So first of all, I'd like to thank Abby and Peyton my understanding is you all love to teach health curriculum I know and your unicorns in our system. So thank you for that. Thank you for your expertise and and your passion for that work I am excited because we have relied too long too long on Individual teachers making their own curriculum And to your point Peyton that we have not had consistency across the board necessarily aligned with
state standards the other worry that I had is that we were bringing in lots of guest speakers and we can't always control the content even though we Review those materials. We really cannot control what an outside guest speaker will come in and present to our students So I'm excited that we have a uniform curriculum aligned with state standards and really great Expertise in the classroom that helped us make this decision and then it's walking it out with our students So thank you for your work and I know in the original Document that you received as part of the board packet just sharing a little bit about the ongoing professional development Tapping into Peyton and Abby's expertise. We will be providing Professional development on boarding and even advanced opportunities for our teachers who have been piloting
the program and really just better support the middle school level Where many teachers may share the responsibility of teaching health? We'd like to have a lead teacher at every school Who will be part of the training and also be compensated for their time? So we can continue to bolster that consistency and just keep getting better all the time We really do value continuous improvement and this is important. So we're gonna continue to elevate and improve Thank you, Diane And thank you for all the work that went into piloting this program and working with our students and our families and getting feedback So we appreciate your work. Do you know you have something? I just want to say great job you guys, you know, Peyton is a product of our very own I remember seeing her
as a little girl running around at Marks's basketball game So it's so cool to see you up here and just awesome job guys. Thank you With that I'll ask for a motion to approve 8.2 recommendation middle school and high school health curriculum adoption second Mrs. Babs. Yes, mr. Berthold. Yes, mrs. Gilligan Yes, mrs. Horanek. Yes, mr. Lechuga. Yes, mrs. Solomon absent mrs. Weiss absent Okay last but not least we have board reports Would anyone like to begin? so A couple of things as many have said tonight We all I think majority of us attended the evening of excellence to honor our teachers once again The phenomenal work that they do throughout our district So that was a very beautiful Evening that we shared with the teachers and then just last week I had the the
distinct honor to attend the district art show beautiful art Amazing students and the work that our students put in to show their artwork is is phenomenal I had two students that I was able to talk to the students were kind of moving around but one I was just walking around and I tend to just you know walk around and you know Let the people do what they do and then but I saw one student Who his parents or guardians were trying to get him to take a picture with what you see on the screen? with his art and at first he didn't want to take the picture and then and then so I kind of heard and I was like Kind of you know mildly stooped over and I was like well show me your
art I'd love to know a little bit more about your art And so he kind of was like I don't know and he then he spoke a little bit about it And I said well I'm on the school board and I'd love to showcase your art and then he kind of lit up a little bit So I told him so hopefully he at some point will watch this and if the teacher knows I'll just say his first name with the initial But Eli T his artwork was monochromatic value painting and it's his pug so you can see that He was so amazing with the art and then he just lit up So it's lovely to see our students do work like this and then the other was one of our very own Janae Bird's daughter
she had I didn't get to get hers up there But I'll make sure I make put it up there next the next meeting but her daughter create Painted some some had some artwork as well, and she was just so so excited to show me the artwork so I love the work that our students do and all of the the Board and the district supporting the arts Then this morning I attended the student advisory council senior breakfast that's always a treasure to attend because our students our seniors about to go out into the what we would say the world and Begin to experiencing out things outside of high school. So they gave some of their Their advice to the incoming freshmen and I'm sure some of that advice they'll take on and begin to extend for
themselves But that was very Rewarding to see that our students were doing such great work and that they're going and moving into The things that they want to do in their future and last but not least Dr. Capuchin also talked about our drone team, but I do want to highlight That they also this year. I think it was for the second year. Please remind me if I missed it They flew their drones at the Space Symposium and that is a very huge event because there are people from not only across our nation, but sometimes Internationally, so we are being showcased same for any Valley School District and if anybody knows anything about me I'm always robotics and something in aerospace. So I love to make sure that I highlight our team our drone team For
participating in that that gives them a lot of exposure And so probably allows them to do a lot of the other things that they do in some of the events that dr Capuchin talked about earlier. So I think that was it for me kind of busy last couple weeks Yeah, I'll go uh, you know a huge shout out to the Education Foundation for the evening of excellence Event that we went to that was awesome fun event was great to mingle with everybody here and all the teachers Also, you know walking around the community It's scholarship time and seniors are very excited about scholarship time and so our parents and so Just want to say thank you to the donors Again to the Education Foundation for making that happen When you see a smiling face on
one of the kids is on the kids and just what they've earned It's a very special feeling. So thank you to the community members that make that happen Prom last weekend was amazing Walked into the building and I just could not believe all the hours that were put into making that building Look the way it did and so kudos to the committee who put that together faculty and the admin and Thank you for keeping our students safe Such a great great event and then super excited for Friday It's legally blonde is the play on Friday at Frederick High School So they do quite the show and I'm really looking forward to that. It's date night that night. So Yeah, I like to reiterate Me OSHA said I was at the breakfast this morning for the
seniors at CTE C and I Spent just about Every one of their meetings Had to miss a couple because there's something going on with me. But yeah Got to know so many of them like Long lady joining us tonight What her goals are, you know? Entering the Air Force and and becoming, you know Start giving back to your community that way just by being in the Air Force you're giving back to your community here and I Appreciate her and all the other friends that I've made there and I would hate to see them go almost but It's just amazing when you get in discussions with them and ask them what their goals are and what their dreams are and Just to reinforce them that you know there's never never reason to not take a challenge
and go forward and they're all just seem like they're not at the bit for the next step and So it's it's a good way to good way to end the year for them We won't have any more meetings with them, but we'll be seeing them at the graduation people. So Anyway, that's all. Well, thank you. I'll echo what You know she said about the district art show. I think it's one of my favorite events I just love getting to see what how creative our students are and It's just such an incredible logistical You know feet that our district is able to put on and it's so fun to see so many pieces of art in One place and really get to celebrate our students and their creativity. So I love that. I Know we just
wrapped up CMAS testing and I just want to acknowledge all of our schools for Administering that I know there's that's a lot of work goes into doing that. So thank you and I Also would like to acknowledge and say thank you to Jackie for taking me to schools yesterday we got to spend some time in the Lions area and Thank you to the principals who took their time out of the day to show us around and get us to see students doing What students do and the teachers helping them? So it was a really fun day I love getting to see everyone in action. So I think that's it. Yeah If no one else has anything back to you I'll turn it back over to Danny If you have anything you would like to share
Observations you have the eyes and the ears of the superintendent and the board Well, that's perfect. I have a couple things but I'd like to start off by saying just my appreciation for school advisory council I think being part of it has truly changed my high school career It was fantastic and to be able to be here and have a voice and hear all the things. It's just it's awesome It's a great learning experience. I obviously don't have I'm not my goal isn't sorry to go back into education Be a teacher but to be able to see the background work is just it's great Which kind of leads me into my next point? I open enrolled from BVSD into high school to an IWOT So I think that I have kind of a narrow view
of what st Brain is and so to be able to see the 25-year employee Recognition is just fantastic to me because it opens up my eyes to what the entire district is I obviously didn't go through the elementary school or middle school programs here But to be able to see all those teachers and just everything is fantastic and really cool to watch Secondly Kind of leading back into the school advisory council I was talking with a couple of the other students from IWOT a couple weeks ago, and it kind of came back into concurrent enrollment There was conversation that there were courses provided through different high schools through the teachers who taught there Maybe just food for thought. I don't know if this is the right place to kind of present it but we had
talked a couple weeks ago that it was something where The concurrent enrollment classes through the colleges weren't all Accessible necessarily or sorry through the high schools weren't all accessible there were some classes that kids at IWOT wanted to take at like Silver Creek or Erie and Just didn't really have the opportunity to go both at an IWOT and then maybe take a bus to Silver Creek or Erie So I don't know if that's a possibility in the future But to be able to open that up not just to the front ranges and all the other schools who are involved in concurrent enrollment But maybe open that up to the other high schools to travel back and forth Thank you, yeah Secondly on the health curriculum I think that consistency across schools is gonna be really
important obviously guys you just voted on that so I'm excited about that But it was kind of surprising to me to hear that that was not a consistent thing I would think that curriculum would be consistent across all the schools, so I I'm leaving this year obviously, but I think it's awesome that it's now consistent through everything That being said what you guys said about guest speakers are there still going to be guest speakers coming in At all or is that kind of cut out? We have guest speakers for a number of topics and we are very consistent in our Review of their materials to ensure that they are aligned with our curriculum, so we have guest speakers for a number of Curricular areas I understand that some of our Our Vietnam vets were just
in buildings Speaking to some of our students about their experience, so yes, we continue to have guest speakers but it's also very important that we Ensure that those guest speakers and their content is aligned with our learning standards and that They are not personal agendas that they are bringing in and That we approve of the material and the information that they're sharing with our students So yes, we will continue to have guest speakers. That's great I just I remember through the whole class is having the people come in and talk it I remember especially CPR. That was great So I didn't quite understand if that was going to be completely cut out or just amended a little bit But that's all I have I appreciate you guys Thank you, thank you, and thanks for your
