I'm sorry I know I'm just going to stand here thank you she's still there I opened it all right so uh all right thank you all for joining us we're about ready to get started here today is Thursday March 2nd 2023 this is the Elizabeth School District Board of Directors special meeting and I called this meeting to order at 5 59. all right roll call please director blackham here Dr Booth here Dr fumbrella Dr Carter here director Olson here all right thank you uh we all stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance thank you all right thank you can I get a motion for the approval of the agenda second okay roll call please director aye director Booth aye director fumbeller aye girlfriend um Kim is uh at a at a hospital visiting

a family member and so she won't be joining us for the public comment section but then she'll join us a little bit later come back and join us a little bit later so uh for the for the executive session and then after so um with that Kim thank you and we'll talk to you soon bye all right so the board will hear public comment related to the board search for a new superintendent during the special Board of Education meeting time will be provided on the agenda during public participation for members of the community to speak to the board on items of Interest or concern that do not pure appear Elsewhere on the agenda it is the board of education's practice not to hear in public session complaints against any District Personnel in addition it's a

violation of federal law to discuss in public or elsewhere individual student issues family educational rights and Privacy Act that's FERPA each person addressing the board will have three minutes to present his or her views will and we will ask that you wrap up as as you get near the end of the allotted three minutes the boundaries are designed to help keep the meeting focused and I I apologize for this room but we have and I have some information that I just want to share we've got a musical starting at the high school we've got performances at the middle school we've got basketball practice at the elementary schools so this this was it this is the only place that we that we could schedule so um so thank you and I and again I apologize so

with that um we'll go ahead and start uh the first number one is Jim Viejo talk about I think we're to stay on one point tonight at one point vote for one or the other and I'm sure you're going to hear things from basically two camps and you know I don't know this but I'm just guessing and I think one Camp is going to say all the same thing and the other Camp is going to say all the same thing so I don't want to waste any time and say that over again which I've heard as a request that you guys would like to see in the future where the people getting together and having a representative so I'm going to go in and just to completely um different different direction and just share two

facts one thing I know is there's a post about the Dynamics of the situation going on right now in on next door and um being that it's next door from this area it would be your constituents you could assume in general and um the numbers are there's 900 people that have responded to moving forward with what's been going on in their six that are opposed to continuing what we're doing and going in a different direction and that's a that's something I know for sure and another thing I want to share for you guys and I'll start by giving an example um pray God's will not man's will be done in the Elbert County school board meeting and my point from that that's that's a group of 16 people that I didn't see any of them

here I know them but they're a prayer group and my point is there are armies of people praying for you people individually and you guys as a board that's all I got to say hi my name is Sandy oops and I'm here to speak on the issue of these two candidates that have come up for consideration for this position and it's really important that it gets finalized because we have stuff that's going on in our schools that are confusing our kids and it's some of it is um bullying some of it is the stuff that's coming in it seems like our sexual Revolution Generations has turned some of it is the drag queens coming into the schools that look like characters that are confusing the kids and it seems like the school is creating the

confusion but then is saying oh we have the answers by becoming the counselors and they're taking over the responsibility of parents um from providing everything from meals to their identities to entertainment and it's just wrong and the one thing that combat this is to having one of these candidates put in there to fight back against this and it's something that's been going on for generations and it's time for our generation to say enough it is enough our kids need to be number one all of you up there I do believe that you want these students to be the number one priority and the health of their everyday life and it's time that we become the grown-ups and make these hard decisions and fight back against this crap that's going on I hate it I hate

it for my grandkids I hate it for my kids I hate it for the community it's wrong it's wrong and we all know it and it's this is ridiculous you have to do this but if we're going to do it we need to look at the truth and those are truths that we are facing and it's time to be the grown-ups I'm tired of this and I'm sure there's the community's tired of it parents are tired of it and we're tired of the government telling us what we can and cannot do with our own children it's wrong [Applause] [Music] hello my name is Maggie witherby I'm a resident of Albert County and also representative Albert County stands up and this group is a freedom group and we're all about restoring freedom in our country I'm

going to just say a few words from the uh the letter that my husband and I sent to you earlier the selection of a new school superintendent is always a challenging process for Boards of Education who will do the best job for everyone who has the most experience who is a good fit for our community and its values and who will truly care about the quality of Education that our students receive those are but a few questions that I'm sure you've pondered many times in recent months the Elizabeth Community is part of Albert County is overwhelmingly conservative in our values and beliefs we stand for traditional American Education and reject the recent social engineering programs that we find so often in public schools many parents who object to these unwanted programs often just remove their

children from the public school system this does not have to be the outcome when our schools reflect our values parents will be comfortable sending their children into the public school environment without worrying about CRT and SEO and other kinds of left-leaning programs slipping into the curriculum the selection of a strong conservative individual to serve is our new superintendent is a must it is not optional it is a necessity and when this takes place at that time we will all celebrate together the beginning of a new era in the history of the Elizabeth School District and we the community want to be of service to all of you thank you so much [Applause] balance out audio on the live stream so I need to turn this way down so I can turn the live stream way

up oh so and I don't want to interrupt anybody else um we can have this up do that balance anymore okay it is I apologize if we're talking in here if I'm talking in here can you hear me through the speaker at all yeah I know I'm too loud okay okay for whoever wants to do it I apologize I'll get this right okay okay thank you Grace good evening I'm giving a shot Grace and I know this has been said a hundred times over and over but when you look at the news and you see that Jefferson County School District this last week had a drag queen fundraiser for and the school district was involved it was a school district fundraiser um as many times as we're saying that we're not in favor of all

these things and we want our values in this County to stay this County in this city we want them to stay the way they are we know that we're not ever going to be able to keep things the way it is forever but I do think that we can make a concerted effort to keep things in a balance that we can all be happy with that we are not fearful for our kids to go to school I don't think anybody on the board would like it if just everybody in the school district pulled out at all pulled out all their kids that wouldn't serve the community any more than the rest of this is serving the community I think that it's important that when you're choosing a superintendent that you you as the board hire

a superintendent that recognizes these issues that are on the horizon and can keep the district in County free from these influences I lived in Jefferson County for a long time I never thought in my wildest dreams that that kind of stuff would be going on there's a lot of my family and friends that are in Jefferson County still and they're saying how did this happen well it happened because they weren't here at the board meetings telling everyone what the boundaries were for the community and I think that more or less that's what we're talking about is boundaries as a board you have to set those boundaries when you hire a superintendent you hire a superintendent that is you feel in your heart of hearts this is going to be capable of keeping those boundaries that

the community wants no one I'm not saying that the teachers are teaching critical race and they're getting so upset over us saying that we don't want critical race and we don't want s-l-e or eeo or whatever it is we don't want that but if we don't tell you how do you know so I think it's important and I hope you do this prayerfully this vote tonight and I hope that you will end the search for the superintendent I think you are so blessed I can't even believe that you have two qualified people like this for a district of our size I think God's hand is really in it and I really wish you would pay very close attention to that thank you very much thank you Dr Robert Meyer I'm Bob Meyer Elite pastor of

Pine Valley Church let me first commend the board I see that you have seemed to have made a genuine effort to open the lines of communication with the people and to continue to hear from the people that's a really good thing there are so many rumors out there some of which probably aren't true some of which are almost certainly true the longer you drag this process out the more suspicions you're going to have and it's going to become increasingly tense you have followed the process you've got some great candidates conservative candidates you yourself have decided that these are your two finalists my encouragement to you is make your decision make it tonight it's on the agenda decide on one of these two candidates thank you very much [Applause] Susan Leonard thanks to everybody who just

spoke it was heartfelt and I appreciate that my name is Susan Leonard and I have four kids in this County who all went through the Elizabeth School District recently and I love the school district the teachers and staff were and I believe still are focused on all the right things and because of that my kids got an excellent education and a lot of great memories I have been following along with the school board by watching the meetings online and I was a supporter of Douglas Bissonnet and felt that he did a fine job running our district for many years I'm excited after many months that the district is finally in a place to hire a new superintendent the in between time for any organization is difficult and I appreciate Bill Dallas for stepping in as

the interim I want to congratulate the board on providing our district with two great candidates to choose from I realize that some teachers and community members want a less Conservative candidate but the majority of the taxpayers in this District identify and vote as conservatives in fact I voted for each School Board member in office right now because this is the platform that you all ran on I would be confused if we did not hire a conservative superintendent I highly doubt any of you on the border trying to make this County more liberal because our community is still in the majority as conservative unless something has changed since the 2020 election where 70 for 74 percent of our County voted Republican I think at this point with all the dissension on the board which is starting

to cause chaos in our schools due to people taking sides it's important to hire someone who is independent of all this emotion excuse me and can come in and get this District moving forward again my daughter-in-law is a teacher in Douglas County and last year when the new more conservative board was voted in teachers came in the next day literally sobbing according to my daughter-in-law because they felt scared but within a few weeks things got back to normal and teachers went back to doing what they do best which is teaching and caring about their students speaking about being afraid from listening to past meetings I just want to address this as a former teacher myself I've heard this rumor that a hit list to get rid of some teachers or staff is in play in

place by a board member but one thing I do know about school boards from being a past teacher is school board members have zero power when it comes to hiring and firing staff other than the superintendent so I hope that that rumor will be put to rest and stop being used as a fear tactic to further along chaos every teacher and staff member that has chosen to teach or work in Elizabeth already knew they were coming to a conservatively bent district with a new conservative event superintendent nothing will change for them because it is already how it has been the whole time they have been teaching here but of course if they hate it for some reason just like anyone who is unhappy with their work situation they have lots of choices out there we're

not remote the important thing for the board is to do is to vote the way the majority of this community I'm almost done that those that pay the taxes in this District would expect them to vote the most important thing an elected official needs to remember is that you are beholden to your constituents who voted you into office because of who you said you were when you ran and in a small community like Elizabeth it was your neighbors and friends that trusted you that that you would make decisions for them and therefore supported your campaigns and ultimately voted for you so I asked for tonight for you to vote on one of the two candidates that are up [Applause] Michelle Smith exactly what she just said um so I'm Michelle Smith I'm a mom of

four all came up through Elizabeth School District from preschool to graduation last one graduated last year and I just want to say thank you to all of you been involved in the school district a long time I've I've really worked with a lot of teachers and staff and administrators in the past and I just think you guys are exceptional people especially this board and we lift each other up and encourage each other we voted for you on conservative you knowness and and I personally and we own a business in this town we're around a lot of young adults and a lot of you know older adults this is a conservative town and we want to keep our schools conservative we want to keep them focused on the right activities which is education educating our children

on the right things that they need in life to be successful and right now all four of our kids are in college and they're doing well and it's because of this school district and what we focused on in the past so I just want to say thank you I want to encourage you to vote tonight for one of these candidates they are fantastic I researched them online I I am I'm really excited about the future of our school district so please vote for one of them tonight thank you very much gay daddy good evening I'm David Eddy I'm a Community member and I've had five kids go up to the Elizabeth School District last one graduated also last year I was fortunate to be on one of the panels during the interview process I think

you have um a solid candidate and then I think you have an outstanding candidate I think that uh the answers that I heard from the candidate talked about the priorities that need to exist here in this District I believe in being vigilant with the curriculum and I think you guys are doing that as I've attended the board meetings and watched them on online so I don't really have a worry about you guys you know paying attention to curriculum and keeping the things that don't belong in the Elizabeth School District out that's that's not not really a concern I have the concern I have is more to what the candidate spoke about as being priorities for the school district you really once once you get some information that's going to come out of the RTA in

a couple of weeks regarding the demographics here you're going to realize you have a four alarm fire with respect to capacity here you guys need to up the priority on discussing Bond Mill Levy resources that are going to be made available in the school district because you're going to run out of room the uh just to put it in perspective the birth rate in the last two years is at a 25-year high so that means in three years you're going to have more kindergartners and preschoolers that are going to come and depend on the schools here in Elizabeth than you've ever had before anybody who's paying attention to the construction that's going on it's not just spec they're actually have have a number of over 150 homes that the builders are building with the high

interest rates and everything else so that's going to be a significant drain on the resources unless we get ahead of that and start making decisions now about increasing new Middle School capacities other schools and then the other piece I think that is right behind that is teacher retention no but none of the teachers come out here and I coached at Elizabeth High School for seven years now and as I mentioned my kids came up through this the turnover that I've seen is is troubling sometimes as high as 30 percent a year and so they don't come out here for the money they come out here for the love of where they're teaching and the values that exist in this community but the fact that they just love teaching and some of the programs that I

think that I spoke about a couple weeks ago with HTI and some of the construction expansion and and not having modular classrooms for auto shop and those type of things I think those are critical priorities I think you're going to make a decision tonight on on the superintendent again I think there's one that stands head in the shoulders above the other one that was fairly obvious to me and I think he'll lead the way I I do want to also go on record the fact that I work with Bill Dallas and I feel Bill Dallas is as concerned about those type of things and the priorities that I just spoke of as the new superintendent will be and so I I'm hoping that bill sticks around for another two years to help us continue to

move the curriculum in the right direction and expand the capacity of Elizabeth School District thank you thank you Dave Bob Lewis okay hello directors I'm Bob Lewis I'm a long time resident here in Albert County 1845 Buttercup Road we moved out here on a contract to uh that I had for four years and I wanted to live in a rural area and we dropped in here and but we were just going to be gone by 1996 and as you can tell that plan we became part of this community and we never looked back my two children Megan and Remy they went completely through the school district I am absolutely certain that much of the gray hair on Craig blackham's head is as a direct result of his interactions with my son but as you can

see from my mustache I didn't get away with it either I'm here today because I've been following this process I'm very invested in the community I'm obviously and I've been following this process for a very long time and what I what I find is the way this thing has played out I would hope you all are uh kind of sorry about the way this thing played out at least in public the outward face I'm very disappointed in that the leadership needs you are the leaders here and you need to step it up you need to work together and put forward professionalism you don't have to love each other you just you know you do have to be professional I believe these two finalists that came out of this process are are excellent my preference is

Priscilla Ron I happen to know her in a professional sense and I do know that she is top-notch she's young and she will lead this District in a manner that will take it right into the next level where it needs to be it will need to grow as the gentleman before me said um Mr snowberger got nothing against him either so you have two choices there is a rumor out there that you all may be deciding to try to um put this decision off that would be stepping outside of the approved process that you yourselves have set and it would be highly irregular and that would create make this even more uncomfortable for all of us you have a decision to make an important decision I wish you would do it I don't think you

should for the Elizabeth School District I don't think she you should ever retain somebody that believes in social emotional learning and many of the other alphabet processes this has always been an exemplary school as a real estate broker it's been real easy to convince people to move here because in part of the schools let's not change that let's choose tonight from these two exemplary candidates and of course my favorite is Ms Ron thank you [Applause] Jay lucky yep cool sorry I couldn't read it's all good uh my name is Jay lucky I am a health one of the healthcare providers in the area I interact with a lot of the students and regardless of the school board church should act as a unified voice that provides safety and ensures the policy set forth that ensure

the prepared future for every student in an ever-changing world at the last meeting the word sustainability and equitability were thrown around a lot in the current state the board is acting it is doing just the opposite it is not ensuring the future for our students or the teachers it was brought up on many subjects that the parents want to you want to engage the parents on all those subjects but students should be allowed to act and grow on their own independent of influencing of their parents the school board is not only responsible for ensuring the future of its students but the fact that if an Administration it's faculty the board's inability to come to consensus and further establish the future for its teachers and it's superintendent has been a joke in the district I'm actually

going to stop where I'm at because all right thank you Bill Payne oh dear board members for Elizabeth School District I have lived in this district for 22 years now I love this small town community it reminds me of the small town I grew up with and grew up in in South Dakota three three of my four kids have been in this school district at one point or another my youngest son graduated from Elizabeth High School we enjoyed wrestling meets football games all the school activities my oldest daughter was at running creek we were part of the PTA here it's sad to see what this small town in Colorado have become due to Crazy politics although I do not have any kids in this school district now I do have several friends that have have

young children in the school district they're afraid to come and speak up at these school board meetings because of fear of retaliation that has happened from teachers at running creek I sat in here in this Berry building at a school board meeting where you all went over your ethos for how you were going to run the school Renault went over all your ethos all five of you voted I in favor of them the one that stood out to me is the one put the children first and none of you are doing that right now I have a lot of respect for Craig blackham Heather Booth Kim frombeller these I've known these people for years and they know my kids you guys need to make the right decision and vote tonight to pick somebody for this

Jefferson County has closed 33 schools since 2020. because people are pulling their kids out of public education and sending them to private school Christian School I was always in favor of public education because without it I would not have gotten education this school district as small as it is can't take the hit if you lose five ten twenty percent of your students to public school to private schools and it's going to happen people a lot of people are talking about that you need to hire a leader in this and they're this school district is failing because of a lack of leadership and it starts with the five EU Albert County and Elizabeth in particular are Conservative Christian people that's who elected all of you whether you believe it or not that's the way it is

and it we need to keep it that way for as long as we can we live here because it's a simpler safer Freer lifestyle we want to raise our kids that way we don't want to raise our kids in Denver or Boulder or Fort Collins that's why we live out here please vote today to hire superintendent thank you thank you [Applause] Conley foreign ladies and gentlemen I am a redneck from Oklahoma I'm gonna call it like it is but when I took a job here in Colorado I specifically put my family in Albert County for a reason I love your Conservative Christian values and I want to commend this board for the two candidates that you brought before us both of them will continue all of those values for us what I think we're looking

at is one that will continue those values and one that will help us in other areas listening to both of them talk and they're both going to support us they're both going to keep those values for our kids I do believe that Dan is going to step up and he is going to put in the places to ensure our kids success long term Dan has already proven through everything he's done in Durango that he is going to step up and not only address our issues was Staffing for our schools but he's also going to ensure the success of our kids outside of just secondary educations he's going to step up and say hey we're going to further our Automotive programs we're going to further our nursing programs we're going to further all of those things

and that is who we need as our next superintendent thank you all thank you very much [Applause] Jessica Conley hi I'm Jessica Conley I'm a second grade teacher here at Elizabeth schools I sat through the initial interviews well the interviews that were open to the public I don't know if those were initial or not the Pan um I wasn't on the panel I was at the running creek interviews sorry I didn't know how to that's all right so I sat there and listened to both interviews um and I don't know either candidate from Adam but I can tell you that as a teacher I feel more supported with Dan snowberger I feel like he knows what he's doing I feel as a Conservative Christian that I want a servant leader and I get that from

Dan that's not to say anything negative against Miss Ron but the situation that our district is in we need the experience that he can bring and I feel like he will have our back and I will feel so much comfortable choosing to stay in the district if Dan is elected to be our superintendent if you guys go another Direction I'm not sure what I will choose to do um just putting it out there and being honest as a teacher within your District thank you thank you Denise Reeves hi guys um I was honored to be able to serve on one of the interview committees actually with Mr Eddie here and I I too um was impressed in different ways with both of the candidates I felt that Dan snow burger with nine years of experience

as a superintendent was a I was actually amazed that he applied to work here um but the one thing I thought was missing in both instances was um to be able to talk to anybody that had worked with these people so I tried to do a little due diligence in in my job which I'm now retired from I traveled to State a lot and knew a couple of people down in Durango so I called one of them had four kids who were either in or graduated from Durango schools and he just had nothing but praised for Mr snowberger but I asked him if he could give me the names of a couple of teachers that I might be able to talk to to get their Impressions um unfortunately I wasn't able to get a hold

of one of them but the woman and I did get a hold of worked with him for seven years and she said she did not know a single teacher in Durango that had anything bad to say about him I think that's kind of amazing because I've been here since the Earth was Cooling and I can't tell you I can't tell you of another uh superintendent who left who we could say that amount so um I just thought that was good information and I hope you do make a decision tonight thank you thank you very much [Applause] Sherry MERS hi I'm Sherry MERS and I also had the pleasure of being on one of the Committees um to interview the other night and it was very humbling I'm a Ponderosa High School graduate I moved out

here in the 80s and I have lived in Elizabeth on and off for many years I love this County we came back out here because of the conservative values I will let you know that I know Priscilla Ron personally I think she's a fabulous person I think Dan snowberger is the candidate and I and I wrote you a letter as well I think he's amazing and I think he would be amazing for our district um I just hope that you make a decision tonight it's important it's important for all of the chaos to stop and you know this and I just wanted you to hear my voice and and to thank you for everything that you do all five of you Kim is not here and I know all of you personally well I don't

know you Carrie but um I do I thank you I thank you for the kids I thank you for the parents I thank you for it's important to protect everyone right we want our kids safe we want our teachers happy and we want the community to cool down right so um and I just so it's just my voice and just my heartfelt thank you to you all and to hear I want you to hear me say please please make a decision you you brought them to us and they're great people thank you thank you thank you very much [Applause] Mary Powell all right well um my name is Mary Powell and I also wrote you all a letter and I just wanted to um tell you that I do appreciate that you entered into this

resolution with these two candidates and these two candidates only on February 16th and it was by a vote of the board of five to zero so those two candidates and those two candidates only are where your decision should come from and it should come on those two decisions those two candidates and not do anything about delaying or pushing it back or trying to start a process over or any of that I don't know if any of that is on your minds but as has been said here by multiple people tonight it is time to make a decision these two candidates are amazing I also was able to be on um the community panel I was actually an alternate but I got to be in there and I got to hear them both and I once

uh you know if we had extra time we got to ask questions and and things and I also I don't know no Priscilla but I I know of her and I've spoken to her before and heard her speak and I think she's amazing but I do think that Dan snowberger absolutely showed the best um himself to be the best candidate for our district to be superintendent he has the experience he has the expertise he has the passion and he has um the the values that we are seeking in this in this County in this in the school district and so please vote tonight vote only for these two candidates don't push it aside don't delay it it has to be one of these two candidates tonight according I think the statute was brought up at

the last meeting that talked about that you had to name finalists you know the first you know executive positions the finalists needed to be named and they needed to be posted and made public and that's what this legal document this resolution that you all voted on that's what that did and then it was 14 days before you could name one or point one today is the including that day today is the 15th day and if you don't count the the day of this which was kind of at the end of the day so I'm not counting the 16th anymore so today is the 14th day so please make the decision tonight only among these two and I would vote go Dan snowberger thank you Tom Peterson well thank you uh directors uh Tom Peterson my

wife and I have raised our family in the community um in fact if you go down to the restroom the photo of the gymnastics my daughter's on the far left from the 2012 state champions I did send a letter uh to All You by uh email yesterday in support of making a decision and picking one of the two finalists so I won't repeat that other than to say I completely concur with Mrs Powell and her emphasis on the resolution and the importance and the legality of that I also agree with Mrs Smith Mrs Leonard uh Mrs Weatherby Mr Lewis and that redneck from Oklahoma and so um uh just a couple of thoughts as we look at conservative values obviously I put a lot of thought into that and I think it's changing uh not

only as we stand for the national anthem we stand for the pledge we have the pledge in the classrooms but now what is coming in our culture is gender bathrooms it is a curriculum and all other forms and it is governance and policy that need to reflect the community and so it's so vitally vitally important that we pick the leader who can work with the board to understand the values of the community and To Be A Champion without working with the teachers in the community and so um thank you for again for what you're doing but I got a minute and 20 seconds left and if you wouldn't mind I'm going to pray for you and just lift you up to the board or to the Lord Heavenly Father we just pause for a moment

we thank you for this day we thank you for your love uh we just say uh pray that you sent uh uh give peace to this community we pray for wisdom for each of the directors I pray that they seek you and search you for wisdom Direction and guidance and I lift them up to you and I pray in Jesus name amen thank you thank you Tom all right thank you Tom that was last a public comment uh person there's okay all right so uh we are now going to go into executive session the way this is going to work is we're not going to ask you guys to step outside thank you so we're going to go into we're going to go into another office and uh I don't anticipate but I don't know
