It still says Molly Barrett. Sorry. One moment. All right now. All good. Carla Brady Present. Robin Rizer Here. Thank you. Mr. Hartman, do we have any changes to the agenda? Yes. So, what's written up
Yes, thank you for asking, Robin. We do. Um under 2B3B, donation and leave, we have an addition. Under EIC, it's SOP IKE-B protocol for single subject acceleration. We're going to go ahead and remove for this evening. Under E, sorry, 1D the standard operating procedure of JICJ student use of communication devices also removed from the CP. Both of those you'll see on the 27th. Thank you, Mr. Hartman. May I have a motion to approve the agenda as written? I make amended. I'll move to uh I'll move to accept the agenda as amended. Second. We have a motion and a second. For further discussion. Hearing none, roll call, please. Mr. Albright. Aye. Ms. Alexander, vote aye. Ms. Brady. Aye. Ms. Reeser. Aye. Next we have the consent agenda. Is there a director who would like to pull
anything off for further consideration? Hearing none, may I have a motion, please? I move we approve the consent agenda. I'll second. We have a motion and a second. Further discussion? Hearing none, roll call, please. Mr. Albright. Aye. Ms. Alexander, vote aye. Ms. Brady. Aye. Ms. Reeser. Aye. Next is the board members' report. Who would like to begin? I can start. I have to pull up my calendar. So, I don't have a lot on there, but I think I'm sure we'll all talk a little bit about our board visioning retreat we got last week that I always find that time very valuable, and I think we did a really good job setting goals for ourselves and looking back um and assessing what we've done and where we've grown and how well we work together. And I'm
grateful for all of that. I'm grateful for the time we had together. Um I also got to go see Well, I've been on bargaining a couple of sessions of bargaining, and I always love that part because we have a chance to put um our our words, what we say, into practice, or that we value relationships in this district. We first and foremost, even working through difficult subjects. And um so I always find that's a challenge, and it's a great to see that we still do that. We still put our words into our actions. And um we still follow our core values. We do that as well. So and I also got to go see the the summer uh the spring musical at the high school, Catch Me If You Can, and this was it was
an incredible incredible show featuring lots of kids, so many talented kids. And um it truly was um a highlight for me to see those kids featured in that way, and and it was evident how much work went into it from all those involved to get those kids ready to do that. And even though um I know they're very tired from putting in all that time to do that, they will walk away remembering that the growth that they had in that experience. It will be a lifelong memory for them. And um and it elevates the program. It elevates the arts here in Kansas City. Sometimes we are in our little bubble and we don't see that our arts community our performing arts can compete with performing arts opportunities up north where they regularly feed those programs
in those schools. And yet we're in a bubble and we still choose to prioritize the arts in our schools. And um I was very grateful when I saw that show. And and we I'll be out more chances for the kids. So And I'm grateful to be here with you all. Yeah, a lot of the same things. Uh the board visioning retreat was wonderful. Um we had uh some really great dialogue and some great conversation around the future of Kansas City schools, what that's going to look like. And uh continuing that uh that learning for life mode that we live in. So, I think that's phenomenal. Um we also got to tour the high school that day as far as the new expansion um on the phase two development and we got to see that the
new lifted tub and uh just all the things that work there that work that's being done on the entrance to the stadium. Uh well, not the new stadium, but the new entrance to the stadium. And so, it's just really neat to see the progress that's being made. Um and then uh again, got to see the musical as well. And one of the things I wanted to highlight about the musical as you look at these students and you think, "Okay, great. Phenomenal actors, phenomenal singers." But you look across these students that are that are in that cast um and not only are they great singers and great actors and actresses, but you have students that are involved in the rocket program. You have students that are involved in sports and athletics. And there's so there's just
this huge cross-section. You know, I I I think back to when I was in high school, it was very much like, you know, you're your theater kids, you're your theater kids, and you're athletes, you're athletes. Now you just have this whole people that just do everything and it's just it's just really amazing. And then on a personal note, also highlighting um the success of Canyon ISD High School, um my daughter um actually got selected to do the second nomination speech for somebody who's running for Congress. And at 18 years old to be able to get up and give a nomination speech for somebody running for the United States Congress, that's kind of a big deal. And that's the Canyon City and that they prepared her for those types of things in life and I think
that's just kind of huge and speaks to the volume of life that we have at Canyon ISD High School. We've been busy the past couple of weeks. Um you've already talked about the board retreat that we held, which I thought was a great use of our time. Um I also over I attended bargaining for a few hours to start to understand the process. Uh we had a compass meeting a couple of weeks ago. Um, one thing that I really enjoyed seeing, um, our schools are adapting based on, um, what some of our citizens are enjoying doing in our community. For example, we're, um, more of an outdoor recreation community than we've been in the past, so we have a mountain biking club at both the middle school and the high school. We also now have
a fly fishing club. And those kids, um, meet at a local restaurant once a month and learn to tie flies. And, um, it's really just so lovely to see them out in the community. And last week I had the chance to be able to be part of that and provide them dinner at, um, the Whitewater Social. And then, I don't know if we mentioned this last time, we had a cornerstone ceremonies at McKinley School and Lincoln School. Um, the the Masons, um, came and brought to us and that was very interesting. So, I think that's it for now. You guys make it easy for me, so the only thing I think missing is, that you didn't go to, is I had an urban renewal authority meeting with the city. All right, thanks guys. Tonight we
have no awards and kudos, so we're going to move on to, um, let's see, file SOP GCBC. Um, it's, um, super supplemental salary schedule presented to the board for information. It's a new standard operating procedure from HR Director Jamie Davis to outline the processes for the supplemental salary schedule, ensuring clarity and consistency in applying salary adjustments for various positions with Cañon City Schools. Then we have file SOP IG-A curriculum adoption presented to the board for information. It's an update to current standard operating procedure from director of curriculum and assessment Brian Zandstrappa, clarifying the process, roles, and exceptions to this for the selection and approval of this of instructional resources including digital materials and new course alignment. The next one and pulled from the agenda as we did the last one. So next, question from Roseann.
I think we skipped over the superintendent's classification. I don't see it on there. It's at the top of your third page. I'm sorry. That's all right. There it is. Okay. Next we have This is our favorite part, the student presentation with the CES students. If we just talk, can you hear us? If you could use a microphone because it's being telecast. Yep. Will it reach here? You might have to move you guys up. >> Okay. All right, guys. We'll just come down here and join our party. Sure thing. Head on. All right. This year we do something different each year to kind of highlight a different part of our building and this year it's our middle school. So all of these kiddos are middle school and you guys will each introduce yourselves. And they are
highlighting essentially some of our different smarts. Um they're electives with a different multiple intelligences, those smarts. And then um when they're done, we'll also talk just a little bit over some of the other smarts that you might be seeing over here on the stage. Savannah? Sure. Okay, so my name is Savannah and I'm an eighth grade choir student. I'm going to share why our upcoming trip to the Colorado Springs Philharmonic on Friday, May 15th, 2026 is such an exciting opportunity for us. So, during this field trip, we will take a 90-minute clinic where professional musicians work directly with us to improve our singing skills like tone, blend, and expression. We may also get the chance to learn from professional singers who are performing the same weekend, which is a really special opportunity to meet. At
the first or at the clinic, we will attend a live dress rehearsal of Porgy and Bess at the Pikes Peak Center. This means we'll see how a full performance comes together before opening night, including the orchestra, singers, costumes, and staging. This experience will help us grow as musicians, build confidence, and see what's possible if we continue with music in the future. So, that's something middle school students usually get to do, and it would mean a lot to us. And it means a lot to us. Thank you for supporting this opportunity for our music program. I'm also going to talk about how we use writing and collaboration, like interpersonal skills. So, we use interpersonal skills because we each depend on how others might be singing. And if And I really like being in this choir community
because if I'm having a bad day or something, there's so many people that can like help me feel better, and I really enjoy it. Uh my name is Peyton Myers, and uh I uh my my smart is a technology, and right now I'm soldering a little FM radio. And yeah. You can talk like tell about word smart or number smart, like what you could do to use in your everyday life? Uh I use math smarts because uh I have to like kind of calculate what pieces I need like how many pieces I need and I would use reading because I have to read the instructions and read where it goes on the radio. And uh use creativity because because I have to use my imagination and nation to see the radio before I make it.
And yeah. What was the name of that invention? Animations. I am Jaden Morrell and I am in eighth grade. I am I'm a student that is in the technology tiny house um class. And the smarts that I use are mathematics is mathematical smart because I am solving a ton of different problems that help me figure out the length of my tiny house and how I can make it where somebody could live in it comfortably. And it um I have learned that um it's kind of hard to do mathematical stuff and I'm not very good at it, but over time I've gotten better at it and it's became fun. And I'm also an athlete in wrestling. Um and wrestling um wrestling helps me um sorry. Being in my PE class helps me um stay in shape
for wrestling and helps me in my grade if I get my grades up it helps me do good in wrestling so that I know that I can actually wrestle and um participate in that sport. I have learned that I learned that I am that I try really hard to keep my grades up whenever I'm an athlete because I really enjoy doing my sports. I'm Reese Spencer and I'm nine. I'm in both of my PE electives. And I do football and wrestling. The PE helps me to stay in shape for football and wrestling. And it also just helps me learn I'm it's possible to get stronger. Even if you think you can get Even if you think you're at the max you can get, but it's possible to get stronger. And it or like it helps
me just in the future and it will help me um learn like if I need to run or catch up to someone or something. I would have to run and stay in shape to do that. Okay. Would one of you guys care to talk about roller coasters? Um me and Peyton did that. So why don't you and then you can talk a little about Dr. Alchemy, too. Okay. The top coasters. Okay. Me and Peyton did that one. You You can talk about either. I actually have some marbles in there, too. You want to do that one? Yeah. Okay. So So me and Peyton had a science project on roller coasters, which is the best. It was the best um exploration that we had. It was so fun to do. And it was just basically building
a It was basically building a roller coaster that would function properly and that our teacher would like to buy for her theme park. And me and Peyton ended up winning that. And it was it was just really fun to do. When you presented, what did you have to talk about? Um when we presented When we presented, we had a we had to blow our marbles on the track and then we had to explain um the where the Newtons were where and which Newton's laws were shown. And we had to show where friction was shown and where a decrease in acceleration, an increase in acceleration all that type of stuff where it was shown. And then we had a tell her how long our track was and what parts we used. Um what If you guys
want to head over there. So when we're done, too. So you'll notice there's an artboard from our middle school art electives and there's some artistic hoods in there if you want to look at just some of the different types of medium to the art that they're doing. And then um there's the tracks. Those were the top two but actually all of them were awesome. Um and there's in the buckets our little marbles if you want to test the track, you can put them in on top and see how it goes. Let's go over there and watch. Yep. And then the two shoe boxes there are sarcophaguses. So our first and second graders learned the mummification process through their ancient Egypt trip. We also like to measure And we also learned that if you touch Russian
kinetic sand in your mouth, you're not going to probably I'm I you serious? Because there's we've lost our chickens to raccoons and coyotes. Lost your mind? All right, I'm going to get a witness or something like that. They used to work So I tested them earlier too and they worked. How'd you come up with that name? Oh, please. I was having an obsession with the rabbits. They're not the most the brightest bunnies. That's pretty awesome, man. He thinks they're label or they're trying to harvest them. Oh, yeah. Did you check the shocks first? I don't know. And I'm going to get a They were done a few weeks ago so like I noticed some were skinny and they're pretty good. Looks like it's still working. No, all you need to start the top one chicken
go. Oh, nice. Okay. Woohoo! This was These were like proportional? Um So, it's been a while since you There's a good time. Thank you. We'd like a picture before we adjourn. Before we You guys can take that sign. Oh, that's a good Yeah, let's take a picture of the chairs. I don't Is that all? Yes, sir. Wait, is that all? Yes, sir. >> No. Thank you. Thanks, guys. All right. Request to address the Board of Education. Ms. Alana, do we have anyone this evening? No. Thank you. Mr. Hartman, Superintendent's report. Well, my report this time is similar to that of the board members. Um I sit here sometimes and I listen to your report and I'm just like, "Huh, we got a lot going on. We got a lot going on in the district." And
that never ceases to amaze me. Yes, we have a lot going on. The cornerstone ceremony was something that I just watching that come together and at the end to see all the people that came from around the state to do something that is important to their organization, but also was important to the new project really came off well and I appreciated their efforts. That was on a Saturday, a couple weeks ago. I bring you the board retreat this spring. Our approach this year looking back, taking stock of the present, and making some commitments for the future is something that I think perhaps we should hold on to each year, but I thought that this year felt like very well. Want to thank the Royal Oak Shrine Alliance that their space was really nice. I enjoyed
that. And coupling it with a yet another uh board walk, if you will, of the construction project at CCHS. It was it was special. Thank you. Compass Committee was important for lots of reasons, but the most important piece about the April May is certified with scores that are under our instructional program review. Those are now final. I've shared them out with all our building leaders. They will send them out to all stakeholders including parents on the 15th of May. They'll post them on to their website. I have one school that we're still working through some final this kind of language issues and changes in there but otherwise they've been all received. It's very important that we get those done so that I can then complete all my principal evaluations. I'm down to just one remaining
right now. I completed three today right here at CES as well as the Washington and Lincoln school. Always anytime I have an opportunity to thank the principals for their hard work and it's what I enjoy you know just having really the honor to be able to work alongside them. I take it. So close to done but have to get the IPRs done before you do the principals before you do the directors and people making we're making great great progress on all of that. Daniel and I were at CEI all day AI last week and it's pretty to see the Kansas school along with the other recipients of this district are going to receive a little bit of additional funding because of that December of this year. But it does push us on this entire timeline
around some allocation of dollars that needs to be aligned with the intended purposes of the artificial intelligence going to work in the schools. So we have work to do with that. I was proud of Dan. Dan was definitely his office. He stood up for that and at the end of the day I received a text from somebody at CEI just complimenting how high quality he is. Thursday night last week was night one of bargaining. We have eight total issues between the association and the admin team that we'd like to attempt to address. We made it through like two and a half last week. But it's important work. The process is good. We are in the process. It takes time and I feel good about where we stand right now. We will reconvene on May 7th
for that. We'll be back together and then potentially we'll join again on May 8th. I mentioned already the principal evaluations and then just copy forward tomorrow very early I leave Kansas City. I'm headed to Washington D.C. I'll be there Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. So, I think I communicated it all to all of you earlier. But, just let me know should you need anything. And then here's the thing that probably means the most to me tonight of all the things I just said here. Yesterday I woke up and I got a text from from Brett cuz then I spoken with Kristen at this point and she was comfortable with us spreading this positive message. I got an early text from Brett our board member Dwight. And it was a phone call. It's not a phone call
you get very often. And quite honestly, when I get a phone call from a number like that, I assume that it was a misdial and it wasn't. And I took it very seriously. "Hey, is everything okay?" And everything wasn't okay. And um Brett had wasn't feeling well. Eventually, he found his way to the hospital. I guess I sent him two two surgeries at his residence. For not long, but two surgeries. And I made four phone calls to the four of you. Texted all the directors over here including Kristen then. And I just want you to know like like in doing that, all those other things all the things that we just talked about, they're they're important. I'm not saying they're not important, but they're not as important. And we do hard things and we face
tough challenges all the time, but giving it out there a periodic opportunity to really get yourself set and you know, this is what really matters. I think that Brett had a really hard moment and I'm thrilled to share with you that as of this afternoon and not all of you directors have heard this. Um but Kristen told me that not only was he able to open his eyes, not only as you guys heard that he was able to talk and even I think she said joke. He asked if we had notified the Board of Education that he wasn't feeling well and he's done some walking today. So, this is really remarkable compared to where he was just yesterday. I know that's not really the work of a superintendent to speak out about the health of
something like that, but it's important in Camden City schools because we care about people and we care about him. So, right now I guess I would just say um that's what I'm most excited for. Thank you. And we do need to send a fun picture to him. I think we should. Yeah, I also think we should text him and ask him where he is. I still think that's funny. That is funny. We care We care about him. We Thank you very much. Maybe we should all do it. That would be fun. All right, next we have some policy work. So, the first one um this is our new Robert's Rules. Uh the next item of business is equal educational opportunities. Will a director please make a motion to introduce the item? I'll introduce file JB
