love it it was a theme day today it was a theme represent the Queens um so my name is Mr pervis um Miss Mason's here as well I don't see her in the back sorry come on up um so me Miss Mason and uh Mr linkowski um during during February 25th to 27th took 80 kids up to the Broadmore Hotel um for a Deca competition um of those 80 we had 13 finalist and with two more um qualifying uh placers one of those placers was Mario Kaufman if you'd like to stand up um he is our state champion in automotive services at the DECA competition so um I'm also up here to present the fbaa ones as well um fbaa actually went and competed last week up at the Gaylord Hotel in Denver um we

took 34 students up there and 18 of them made the finals um of those 18 we had eight placers in the top four um two of them came back as state champions uh Jacob Valdez in business management role play um Jacob beat our second place team by six um so we had first and second in the same place uh same event and then our second state champion was Philip rasm um in inter National Business role play and I don't see him here but that was our second state champion up there as well [Applause] so um another major reason we're here because we have strong programs is Mrs Odell I want to recognize her so when we brought her on board these programs have just thrived and she's built them up and this is the result

of that so great job Mrs zel okay next up we have our host of people Mr koh's Mrs Allen and Mr Lopez please come on up good evening uh thanks for being here and thanks for having us uh my name is Ryan Kohl's um I'm one of the science teachers and advisers for HOSA which is future health professionals and with me is Mrs Allen and Mr Lopez um we were fortunate enough in February to bring up 73 stud students to the state um conference which was the largest uh delegation at the state conference so PBO West was really represented well in District 70 as well and uh we were fortunate enough to have three first placers so we had in onqu she was first place in bioinformatics um we had another team they aren't here

right now U Mason is competing in Esports which is pretty amazing for him but he and his partner um and a oh yeah all right sweet all right sorry I didn't see you Mason and Aaron all right so stand up Aaron they were able to get first place in um uh MSR which is um oh my gosh I'm bling um medical um Reserve corpe uh partnership so they worked with some some people in the city of PLO um and then we have our first backtack state champion um Haley Mau in clinical specialty um all these students worked very very hard and diligently and um obviously their work paid off and I'm grateful to have um supportive Administration as well as a great team working with me so thank you guys thank you and last but

not least Mrs Sloan come on up for our speech and debate state champs Jeff SLO your assistant you want yeah for sure come on up um it's been a great year for p Beach and debate um we've got about 47 members on our team right now and at the state competition this year we were super excited excited that we had three state champions this was unprecedented and um I'd like to introduce those state champions at this time so we have Ria Singh who was the state champion in Lincoln Douglas [Applause] debate and Ria will be attending Brown University in the fall so we're really proud of her um we had Philip Rasmus who is a state champion in us extemporary um speaking so proud of him I don't think he's got here yet and he's

going to go to USC in the fall I guess if we're talking about colleges and then um uh our third uh three time back-to-back state champion um in original oratory is eni onqu and um she is not going to college yet because she's a junior so we're Hing for four but we're so proud of these team members it's really unprecedented uh Statewide to have three state champions in speed T debate it's extremely competitive and um we're just super proud of our kiddos who have worked so tirelessly and they've competed we've had about 20 I think we've had 25 tournaments this year so they've had a lot of opportunity to practice and polish and uh it's we're looking forward will be competing in De Moine Iowa Nationals um with the same students and um uh Ella

McCrate as well this summer so we're super excited for the future of our team and uh coach Sloan has been a huge part of the debate side developing our debate program and that's been so so successful so thank you K do you want to K is going to give her spee spee hopefully she knew she knew are you ready you don't have to no you I want you to if you're I will say it's been like two months since I've seen my speech so I'm not memorized and I will be reading so please give me a second to pull it up it's okay we're not juding okay um for preferences um once again my name is inqu I compete in original oratory so original oratory is basically you memorize and compose a 10-minute speech it

can be about any topic you want as long as it's socially and politically relevant um for the past 3 years I like to theme my speeches around the identities of around the themes of both um the corresponding intersections of both identity and race especially and how that's structured under like the United States and how that how that can be observed so for this year my speech was basically based around tone policing of minorities um oh the title was um forget dorum excuse me pardon me and I'm sorry these three phrases have been socialized to us since we were young and worked into our natural conversations in other words politeness or decorum and especially comes in handy in rather difficult conversations whether be discussing politics at the Thanksgiving dinner table or trying to convince a non-

listener Beyonce that compared to Taylor Swift she easily clears regardless we rely on these rules of decorum to civil diffuse difficult conversations but when we prioritize theorum instead of having these uncomfortable yet necessary conversations then it becomes time to rethink our so-called rules of politeness as this becomes known as tone policing author of so you want to talk about race IG oloa explains tone policing is when a privileged person in a conversation about oppression shifts the conversation from the oppression being discussed to the way it is being discussed prioritizing the comfort of the privileged individual over the oppression of a disadvantaged individual and in a country that is ever polarized tone policing has not only become an effective weapon of forced silence on the necessary conversations but it is erasing the history experiences and identity

of marginalized people today so for the sake of redefining what we perceive as politeness and conversations that should be about oppression here's what I won't be doing in my speech today I will not excuse the fact that history books are being Rewritten to make the atrocities of the past seem like the dreams of our future I will not pardon the stereotypes that are often placed on minorities limit how we are able to discuss and interact with different forms of Oppression and finally I'm sorry that I'm not sorry for raising my voice when it comes to discussing the different methods that we can take to alleviate the forced systemic discrimination that is tone policing while tone policing takes many different forms rewriting history is easily the most common censoring how history is taught provides a way

for us to avoid the hard work of learning from our mistake and allows us to be comfortable while learning about it however just like every time traveling movie that ends in some type of anomaly skipping over important yet tense pieces of our history only creates a dysfunctional future and today some legislators across the country are on a crusade to revamp issues of race and Equity are being taught to the American Youth and they're doing it in a way that trist the truth that twists the truth and rewrite the real protagonist of our history for example in July of 2023 in accordance to Ronda sanz's stop woke act the Florida Board of Education voted on new guidelines that voted to teach that slavery was beneficial to African-Americans because they learned useful skills this curriculum even goes

as far as conflating the history of the Tulsa Race Massacre which for those of you who may not be familiar the Tulsa Race Massacre was when a predominantly black neighborhood that was economically thriving was burned To The Ground by a group of white supremacist mobs so who was really violent in that instance and yet it doesn't stop there in history textbooks across the country often times in private schools it is being it is being found that they are more likely to use misconstrued and confed history textbooks that misconstrued what actually happened in minority relations for example abaca the most prominently used history textbook within the United States teaches that the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade were nothing more than just black immigration these text was completely ignore the struggles of black lives matter and

even completely ignore the plights of Native Americans within our history and while I understand that and yes learning about these topics may be hard and uncomfortable but it is absolutely necessary today today when the atrocities of the past are still permeating into our future today when black people are still fighting for our rights in history Healthcare education just name a few today when Native Americans are still facing unprecedented hate crimes on their own land today when our history is still relevant history is not a positive narrative for us to read about a fairy tale about the victories of America because the truth is that our history is bloody the truth is that our country is built on the subjugation of minorities the truth is necessary and while it may not be uncomfortable and while it

may not be comfortable to teach that Christopher Columbus was actually despicable person there's nothing remotely comfortable about systemically erasing the history of subjugation of minorities from textbooks it was never about the victors or the losers it was about those who bear witness and keep record so that the identities that were denied their Humanity in the past can be humanized and respected today but policing the reality of the past only creates a false binary that silences the oppressed furthering a cycle of misinformation IGN ignorance and Distortion of the truth and what better way to perpetuate this cycle than stereotypes stereotypes are often placed in minorities to limit how we are able to interact with different forms of Oppression and those of us as women especially women of color understand this struggle all too well today in

both academic and occupational spaces black women are often faced with the stereotype of an angry black woman this stereotype suggests that we are overly emotional overly aggressive and in eloquent in communicating our emotions and this leaves us with two ways in which we are able and and this leaves us in two ways in which we are forced to react the first we stay silent we stay silent out of fear of fitting into The Stereotype and yet our silence only allows these transgressions to continue or the second we speak up and yet when we speak up our experiences are ignored and dismissed due to the wrongful assumptions of this stereotype placed on us a double-edged sord and a tale as old as time yet we all know it as Michelle Obama a prime example of this

stereotype as an article from The Washington Post explains that people tried to paint Michelle Obama as an angry black woman just for using her voice to address the hard truths people would rather look at her outward identity than hear her message of anti-oppression and as a black girl who's competed in predominantly white spaces my entire life I am no strug I am no stranger to the struggle for example in my fresh in my freshman year speech and debate I created a speech that highlighted the importance of being respectful and pronouncing Afrocentric names correctly and as someone who's had my name butchered left and right I wanted to bring attention to the importance behind our names and why it is so important to at least give your best effort in trying to pronounce them correctly and

yet I was told that I need to be less emotional when discussing how I wanted my name to be respected then the second year I created a speech highlighting the importance of Afrocentric hairstyles as even the braids on my head are heavily discriminated against both within our legislature and socially and yet I was told that someone else felt guilty because I was being overly emotional while bringing attention to the oppression that I face in both instances regardless of you're a high school orator or the first lady of the United States because of the tone in which we relate our experiences it becomes an excuse for others to deny our message yet the fact of the matter Still Remains regardless if I tell you my story with an oratory filled with a thousand jokes and a

wavering smile that's never going to bring change if you're comfortable about it change only comes from not only listening but respecting the individuals who take the time and the effort to communicate their experience change only comes from being open-minded and first listening at the end of the conversation when we are finally done erasing history from textbooks done placing stereotypes on minorities done apologizing for the valid tone in which we communicate our experiences we can forget the Kor and now I don't mean throw all of our manners outside of the table start putting your elbows on the dinner table not holding the door for someone else which is my personal pet peeve I mean and conversations about oppression instead of focusing on how the conversation is being conducted we should focus on the actual oppression itself

tone placing oops sorry and the first step is to engage engage in learning the full extent of Injustice within our history and a perfect way to do this is to read banned books and while it may seem counterintuitive to read something that is banned in 2023 CBS news reports that 1,600 books were banned about issues of race gender lgbtqia issues in the US and especially minority authors were amongst the most targeted however this list points us to the perfect books to read to understand the multifaceted identities and struggles of minorities to deconstruct our biased perceptions of minority topics taking this a step further means advocating not only to your local legislature but to your local school boards and advocating for more minority authors and diverse topics to be taught within our school curriculum and it

not only allows students like me and PR and not only allows students like me and minority spaces to respected but allows my other counterparts of students to have a multifaceted Viewpoint of the world around them and the next step the hardest one of all is to listen listen when somebody else of another background is communicating their experience to you and ask yourself these two questions am I uncomfortable with what is being said or how they're saying it and if you're UNC comfortable with the what then that's great news because it means that you have the capacity to be an instrument of change tone policing simply suggest a reality that doesn't exist because invoking tone erases the force silence cause from Injustice when it takes courage to witness an injustice it is even more commendable to

speak up about it emotions and all because our emotions toward wrongdoing are innately tied to our experiences and our identity so excuse me pardon me and I'm sorry for no longer sanitizing the valid passionate tone behind my message instead let's create a safe space for the Silence of Injustice to be unapologetically broken by leaving your maners at the table because listening to our history listening to our experiences observing our identities is the most polite thing you can do so in our ongoing discussions of how we are going to rectify the Deep inequalities within our society remember the voices that Goen heard the identities that go overlooked the histories being forgotten and remember to forget decorum thank you okay we're going to go ahead and move on um next up is information from the board and

superintendence well I have to say the first time I heard your speech as a freshman I learned how to say your name because you are amazing and I just I can't I can't wait to see what you become I mean you are already becoming pretty amazing but the future is bright for you so thank you oh Mr Wagner did you have anything else I go thank you um I couldn't be prouder of all these teachers all these students they work hard in shows so I'm lucky to be where I am so thank you can we get a picture of everybody is I don't want to hijack your meeting but can we go outside just everybody's here at once yeah thank you oh you are you want to with no no I okay no but I

do have more to say whenever they after they're gone she's amazing I know come back in though you're going to miss the best part okay go ahead Ron uh after after that the the next part that I have to talk about is a little bit um sad news you know we we had a two losses this week last week actually we lost a 13 yearold student named Josiah Gonzalez Lucero at Sky View Middle School and we lost Leon Montoya a 12th grader at bubble West High School and for me that's the hardest thing to deal with as a superintendent is is losing our kids and so you know I just want you to keep those families in your thoughts and your prayers because not just the families but their teachers their teachers build bonds uh

there their friends build bonds with these kids and so that loss hits hard and so please just keep those families and those teachers the students everyone who is associated with them in your thoughts and prayers thank you thank you Petro do you want to go next yeah it's kind of tough tough to follow as superintendent Ryan said those are the toughest things that we deal with as Educators and so we definitely want to uh remember those two individuals and and U keep their families in our thoughts um a couple things that we we had uh a few events take place prior to to spring break that uh you just want to recognize from our schools and I John I won't steal your thunder I'm sure you want to talk about the r High School oyster

fry but I did attend that and it was it was very good still couldn't get my wife to try one but um perhaps God could provide a little more detail on everything there um went to County High School for their make a wish uh campaign and their uh assembly each year they do a a make they they adopt a child from uh our community and they adopted a uh child from the Pu West Community uh named Poppy and so Poppy and her family will be going to Hawaii as part of her make a wish and uh I want to say $24,000 is what public county raised and so in addition to uh popping her family uh make wish will be able to Grant I think is said up to four more wishes of other Colorado

um families uh so that's that's really great work by that staff and students you should have seen them at the assembly just getting money out for their final push and playing the games and they had campaigns all week long uh if they raised so much money teachers how to do this and great event I I know uh West is in the middle of their uh B A Wish campaign and I I believe in a couple weeks we'll have some more information on the good stuff that that uh those those students and those teachers are doing over there so just just a couple uh you know good news things coming out of some of our schools nice looks like you guys had fun AJ um you know I've seen a lot of people in this boardroom

but uh this was by far one of my favorite meetings we had a lot uh lot going on this one so I I like seeing a lot of this stuff and I wish all the board meetings were like this you know packed houses and and not for the negative things but for all the positive so as long as you're not yelling at us yeah you know it's growing it it was nice so um definitely want to lift up that the the family involved this last week and the loss of those those kids um definitely definitely hard and impacts the community and you know if those families need anything we're here for them so other than that I don't I don't really think I have much so it's an exciting time there's lots going on these

next couple months very busy in the schools so got anything yes that goes without saying well congratulations to all the state champions I mean that's like amazing that you know the schools are able to bring home that kind of hardware for the effort they put into it congratulations to all the the teachers con congratulations to all the students I was sick for most of March so I don't remember most of it and um but I'm back now so I'm I'm RAR and I'm ready to go I'm going to be at bter tomorrow so Cheryl if you're listening I'm going to see you tomorrow she's canceling she's canceling that cuz she's her teacher is sick really or out of town well nice to know she just text me I was like oh I'll pumped about it

okay okay I guess I'm not going there but I am going to be at Cedar Ridge the following week to see what they've done to the school that my both my grandkids went to and some of them are still in the school system that we're raising and um see so I'm looking forward to that I'm trying to balance a number of different things to be able to hit as many schools as I possibly can because I want to see what they're doing and see the um the impact that the teachers are making I I tell people and sometimes I think they have a hard time really seeing it but my grandfather during the Depression was a principal at a school in Chicago my grandmother was a was a teacher my aunt became became a teacher

her daughter became a speech therapist let's see my other cousin from the different side she came she became a teacher and she taught on the the south side of Chicago and They begged her to teach bilingual kindergarten because she was she was so good and so smart she could do that and I have another cousin that she decided later in life she wanted to go and be a teacher in Wisconsin and she did and she I just t and she says yeah I Got 5 years left and then I'm you know her husband's down on the the beach in Florida and she's like but I got five years left I'm going to I'm going to do it and then I spent a week with my my niece who her mother just had passed away and

I realized that she is a school counselor she is for for colleges she gets students in there and emotionally takes care of she says I wish I could adopt them all but she really doesn't so so when I say that I understand what teachers go through and what they do I I totally totally get it and I think that they are absolutely should be recognized for the the progress and the the the the the gifts that they bring out in children I just that is so so important and I'm so happy to have the opportunity to be able to do that and I also know I have a lot of of support in in the community in all areas and I am grateful for that support and I those women know who they are and

I want I I I would say all their names individually there's not enough time but I love them dearly and um I just thank you very much sounds good nothing else no I I can come up with more I'm really good at separating my mom was a no I'm just kidding um I'll stay on congratulations uh last was it Thursday we got to go to the carriage house for the Colorado Press Club Awards and our own Lynette bonfilio was awarded the public relations person of the year I guess a good one so St on that with congrat um I think that's all I have for now okay uh yes Mr Rogers from Bula emailed us and um they were their Science Olympiad last month right last week lastek last week on um the they the

kids they entered in all 23 events and they placed in four of those with bronze and silver medals and the bua school placed eight out of um 30 schools so that's pretty pretty neat for a small school and um and then I attended the Winter Guard today at Ry high and that was pretty neat this an extension of the marching band and they uh they did a tribute to um health and suicide and it was was pretty neat to watch Pretty touching so they're the only one the only Winter Guard in D60 and 70 and they are now U placed um or ranked fifth overall in the state I believe so for a first time Winter Guard for a good accomplishment and it's springtime that's all I have okay okay I would just like to

also bring up that we had our own superintendent who received an outstanding women award um by the PLO City County Library District she was nominated so a couple of us were able to attend that and so we're very proud of her for that so very welld deserved yes definitely and we're looking forward to graduations this exciting time of year yeah yeah I love being there at 8 o00 in the morning let me tell you all right well we'll move on to discussion um our first one is a presentation of the P County High School JC trip sergeant major Lewis good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and all you and your respectful places Miss Ron how you doing today all right I'm back here s like I was here about two weeks ago I'm back here again

on another rifle trip to I guess we went to Camp Perry Ohio about 3 weeks ago uh the kids shot well we was competing against all services Air Force Navy Marines so we end up in sixth place out of 32 teams so that was a successful thing in all things so this next trip here is to Sandy Utah which is next week and we're competing in the CMP national championship which consist of teams from Alaska Hawaii all over the country and there's about 40 some teams in this match so we asking your blessing for this here I tried to send you guys a link where you can sit there and watch the kids shoot so I had to get all you guys emails so on Friday we shoot on Fridays and Saturday so I can

send this link and you can Absolut sit right there and watch you can see them shooting but you won't see them but you'll see the the shots and their names so other than that that's all I have all right are you excited to go oh yes ma'am big time and how many got six people 67 nice yes Ma so well thank you very much do you guys have any questions still Airsoft rifles par me ma'am still Airsoft rifles yes ma'am yeah you know things happen they change the program so if you want to shoot high power stuff like that you got to go to the Olympic Training Center somewhere like that other than that they're still tough though let make it happen how that the ass off are tough they they're they're tough though I'm

telling you I spend all I spent all my time in the military shooting all kind of rifles and weapons but this dog on air rifle gives me a headache I'm tell tell you so other than that I appreciate it guys all right thank you so much thank you okay next up we have a bond project update Madam president members of the board uh the bond is uh in great shape uh we're finishing up controls at a few schools uh right now uh Cedar Ridge is complete and buttoned up uh Mr Shepard is actually testing in those new four classrooms that were were built so uh the schematics and the design and the floor print was all designed uh for uh testing and to do well so uh it's going to be exciting to kind of

hear those results when they do come back U my won't be here for for those results but it'll be exciting to see what those results when they come back we'll be finished with the bond at that time um Sky views uh ahead of schedule uh we anticipate a July 25th handoff to the district and we're working with Miss James and her team to get uh FF Furniture uh in that place so things look good any questions for me thank you thank you okay next up we have open Forum are there any comments this evening we do we have two um first up is sorry accidentally started it early we just trying to pull it up Miss Ballas we'll give you a few no it's okay I got a short short and sweet come on hi

good evening um couple of things I want to celebrate um with the legislature and I know we helped you guys helped us last year and we've written postcards this year but the state uh School Finance Act bought down the budget stabilization or the BS factor to zero yay so that's a big win for public schools um that the um legislature is going to put their money into the future of Colorado um this past weekend I had seven of my members attend a Colorado education delegates assembly I know last June there was people here speaking to this body about the capitalism resolution I wrote an amendment and then on the floor the entire thing was rescinded so I feel that's a win that I brought forth and did for this district and for my membership um

we are doing lots of fun camass testing um this is a stressful time and a boring time for staff because you have to be quiet and you have to look at those screens and go or not look at the screens excuse me I misspoke to make sure that they're being active but um and just all that work in time and effort of the last year has gone in and to to see those results and I'm hoping next year at the beginning of the year we have many of those uh banners again this year um and finally um the tlcc survey which is the climate culture survey this is the first year I think in several I don't know how many years we'll have results uh for district 70 across the board because we had at

least 50% of the our staff take that survey um so so and bua school won the lunch so I took lunch out there last week so that's our update okay and one more uh Miss glass all if you remember you'll have three minutes I'll start you but it says I have 55 seconds I can talk fast but not that fast there spit it out all right Madam president board members people that are here um I didn't know Thomas was going to be here I'm work at LP Liberty Point Elementary in public West and it is that time of year again that we are doing our discount cards I did this time unlike last year I didn't bring papers for you guys to see what's on there but as you guys know um that elementary schools

really we don't get a lot lot of funds because we're kind of on the bottom of the total B at the elementary level of getting things I feel like what's I this is my feedback from our parents um so what we do with our we renamed us eagle nest um we come up a lot of fundraisers last Tuesday we had Fuel and iron we made $585 from the PTO from that which is great which helps students like Thomas here he is one of our fourth graders that go to Liberty Point Elementary so what our funds do is help students like Thomas here to go this year they are going to Bent worth Ben benfor benfor as a trip as most of you guys know being in the schools that it costs a pretty penny for

those buses to travel that far so what we as our Eagles nness like to do is do our funds like these discounts cards you will see on there there is a lot of local places on there our major ones that aren't local Buffalo Out Wings $5 off Culver any value basket you get a single dish which who doesn't like ice cream um so all the cards and the profits from these cards and going to filler iron we also on May 16th Copper River we are also doing that day um I believe it starts at 5: so we can have these funds so the kids can go on field trips so the teachers they don't have to take out their paychecks to you know for the students so all the money that we make in our

Eagles Nest goes back to the students back to the schools so that they can go on field trips or if they need supplies headphones CU during CMS sometimes they need headphones for the audio we like to be able for those teachers to get stiens back to help support it so $10 for the cards um they will be at LP um Thomas I don't know if he's going to sell any or not but you can get them from him or just come by the school or any students that go there and we will have these really great discounts on there that's all I got are you when do you have to turn those papers in I'll tell you later he's really excited because we got a lot of prices going on but just figure let you
