evening, everyone. I'm here on behalf of our athletic director, Mr. Steve Millsaps. So, I want you everyone to remember this moment. I don't see the yellow suit. >> [laughter] >> But it is an honor for me to stand in his place tonight to recognize one of our awesome athletes, Mr. Cohen Weber. Um at this time, I would like to recognize Cohen Weber for his outstanding achievement of placing fourth in the IHSA state wrestling tournament at 150 lbs. Cohen's journey to the podium is a true testament of perseverance and dedication. Following his freshman year, Cohen faced a significant setback with the ACL and meniscus reconstruction surgery, which caused him to miss his entire sophomore season. Undeterred, he committed himself fully to his recovery, elevating both his physical and mental preparation to an elite level heading into
his junior year. His hard work paid off as he served as a team captain and helped to lead the Tigers to a 13 and 3 dual meet record, the program's sixth consecutive SPC East Division title. Individually, Cohen was a perfect 15 and 0 in dual meets with 14 bonus point victories. He had an impressive tournament season season including a fourth place finish at the Barrington Moore Pretyman Invitational, a championship at the Tim Dubois Invitational, a fifth place finish at the prestigious Al Dvorak Invitational, and a runner-up finish at the Granite City Invitational. In the postseason, Cohen continued to excel finishing as a runner-up at the SPC Conference Tournament, earning an IHSA Regional Championship, and placing second at the IHSA Sectional Championship. And ultimately secured his first state medal with a fourth place finish at the
IHSA State Championships. We are extremely proud of Cohen for the resilience, grit, and determination he demonstrated throughout the season. The future is very bright as he sets his sights on the top of the podium during his senior year. His commitment has already continued, returning to early morning workouts at 7:00 a.m. and training in the off-season with Izzy Style Wrestling Club as well as the Tiger Wrestling Club. We look forward to continue to support Cohen in his pursuit to even greater athletic achievements. Congratulations, Cohen Weber. >> [applause] >> We are also We are also honored to recognize his head wrestling coach, Mr. Was Arand. COACH WAS. >> [applause] >> PROVIDED GUIDANCE AND MODELING to Cohen each and every day. Along with Cohen getting a workout in in the morning was Coach Was being there to open
the mat room. This was Coach Was' second year as head coach and we are excited for the things to come in the future. Let's congratulate Coach Was. >> [applause] >> Congratulations, Cohen. Michelle, bless. Yes. Wait, wait, wait. Let mom make sure mom and dad got a picture, too. >> [clears throat] [laughter] >> Go ahead, Christine. Congratulations. >> [applause] >> Thank you. Um for our next recognition, I'd like to invite Mr. Dale West and Mr. Noah Fabrice to come forward and do this recognition for us. No, this is um this is Good evening. Sorry. Uh on March 7th, students competed in various divisions such as intro CAD, 3D CAD modeling, assembly modeling, 2D machine CAD, and 3D machine CAD. They are given an industry-related problem and have 2 hours to develop a solution. Their solutions are
then judged by local volunteer uh industry judges. Students who compete uh who competed displayed a strong work ethic work ethic and dedication as they completed many practice problems in the morning during freshman hour, during their advisory and lunch, and during after school open labs. I would like to congratulate the following students from Joliet West. Zachary Oganovich placed second in 3D machine CAD, and Taryn Fallhammer and Emma Trainer placed second in the architectural design division. Zack advanced to state uh to the state competition at ISU. >> [applause] >> And I would like to congratulate the following students from Joliet Central. Atlas Richie placed third in 3D machine CAD. Juan Rosales Alvarado placed second in 2D machine CAD. Oziel Lara placed first in 3D machine CAD. And Nathaniel Gabriel placed first in 3D machine CAD. Juan, Oziel,
and Nathaniel all advanced to the state competition at ISU. The state competition was held at ISU on April 13th. Nathaniel, Oziel, and Zack, and Juan drove up with Mr. Favors and I to compete against the best of the best in the state. They did a great job representing JTHS, and I'd like to congratulate Juan for placing third in 2D machine CAD, and Nathaniel for placing second in 3D machine CAD. These competitions have become eagerly anticipated events and provide an excellent opportunity for students to explore the vibrant academic offerings at various colleges. Learn about potential future career paths, experience the college campuses first hand, and showcase their industry skills they've gained in class. I'm very proud of how our students have represented our JTHS district. And I'd also like to add that Juan has committed to
UIC for mechanical engineering, and Oziel will be attending U of I for mechanical engineering as well. >> [applause] >> Guys, come on up for a picture. Oh, yeah. Yeah. >> [applause] [applause] >> To conclude our recognition tonight, on behalf of the Board of Education, we would like to honor those students who have participated in color guard during the Board of Education meetings um throughout this school year. So, I'm going to say your names, and then you're going to come forward cuz I see a lot of you here, but to join me, I believe we also have Sergeant First Class Eileen Vogel and Sergeant First Class Nathan Atkinson. So, if you could come forward. I see you waving. Yeah, COME UP HERE. >> [applause] >> WE HAVE WE HAVE OUR LEADERS among our leaders. So, thank
you. So, again, when I call your name, please come forward. From Joliet West, Zamari King, Abel Torres, A- Evelyn Montalvo, Poder Fox. Say that again. I want to say it correctly. Yep, come over here, and you're going to get Aliva- Evelyn Montalvo. Poder Fox. Okay, close enough. She was so sweet. She was so sweet. Uh Uriel Aguirre. And then from Joliet Central, we have Gisela U- Uloa. Thank you. Lawson Luangsomkham, Daniel Contreras, Oliver Van Ness, Avery Jones, Julian Zamudio, Roberto Revero- Revolocaba, Jaylen King-Wiseman, Jeremy Lennon, Emmanuel Luna, Fabian Garcia, and Victor Naduran. If we could give them a round of applause. >> [applause] >> Congratulations. Congratulations. It's complicated. Congratulations. You guys got to get in the picture. Congratulations. Sure. Okay. >> [applause] >> All right, we're going to take a 5-minute recess to come personally
congratulate >> Or they could stay and listen all the fun stuff, Ed. You don't have to run them out. So much fun stuff. The fun stuff. Yeah, the master facilities update. So >> That's pretty cool. >> The pictures are amazing. Yeah. Well, we're going to move into superintendent's report, so we'll turn it over to Dr. Guzman. Thank you. Um, this evening we have one um report that is our massy master facility plan update, Joliet West phase four. So, I am going to turn it over to Dr. Hampton to do our introduction. Yes, we have Wight and Company and Gilbane Company here to present an update on the master facilities plan, and this is for Joliet West phase four. All right. Thank you, everybody. Um, we're going to be going through the Joliet West Student Center.
Um, so we'll we'll kind of go through the progress so far. We're in design development. And um, so here here we'll begin. Um, so there's a lot of projects that have been going on at Joliet West right now. Um, you know, a lot under the LRFP. And so, this slide is kind of touching base on some of the projects that have kind of happened most recently. We had phase two uh PPS CTE projects, phase three. Um, and so, you know, there's been a lot going on, and the next project, um which is one of the bigger projects, is the student center. So, this is a project that we're all very excited to be working on. Um, and we're really uh happy to be um you know, working through uh finally at at this level through
the LRFP. One of the main goals for the student center is to really create a central hub for the Joliet West High students and staff and community as well. Um, we really want to capitalize on the sense of pride and really provide a wow factor uh for the students and the community. Um really trying to get a lot of um the influences that we've been putting through with the smaller projects now implemented into the larger projects. So, we're like I mentioned, we're very excited for that and to see everything kind of come together as one. Um, you know, the school goes by tiger pride, and with every project that we work on, you could kind of see that we've been um putting in a lot of identity through the projects. We really want to make
sure that students um and staff and the community kind of feel that sense of pride. So, this is something that we're continuously going to be working through in the student center and more so in this project um more than ever to kind of really establish that identity and really make that a profound impact um to the the community and students. Um, so what we're looking at right here is a site plan. And so, if you kind of look closely, this is actually uh a site plan. We're looking at the corner of Glenwood Avenue and Larkin. And so, that's where the new student center addition's going to be um um located. The very prominent corner of the high school. Uh if you look at those red arrows, we have an arrow pointing south. That's our um
student entryway, which is nearby the cafeteria currently. Um, there are a couple other um entries um throughout the new addition. Um, but if you kind of look down towards the page on the on the right-hand side, there is uh also that student uh or visitor entry. Um, so you know, the student center is located in an in a place that kind of we felt like would be um one of the most um popular areas of the school. And so, um if we look at a floor plan, um that area of the building, calling it building C, that's where we have the fine arts addition, um where where like the band, choir, auditorium spaces are. In order and in order for us to implement the student center, we actually have to demolish um that shaded red
area that you see on the plan. That whole area will become a void, and the student center addition will be inserted into that. Um, so it provides a nice adjacency between the cafeteria on the left and the auditorium on the right. What we're looking at right now is an axonometric view, which is basically um like a cut through the building, a little bit of a 3D view, and it is turned to an angle, so north will be facing up. Um, but you could kind of see the auditorium is on the right-hand side, and the cafeteria is basically in the lower uh left portion of the screen. But, everything that you see in that large yellow space, there's tables there, that's the the bulk of the student center. That is the core of the student center.
Um, and so, we placed that there because we see that as a place that could be, you know, pre-function to the auditorium. It could be a flexible space for any um overflow cafeteria functions or any new programmatic events um that could occur in the school. Um, around that, you'll see in the light blue, those are student support spaces. So, these will be spaces that students and staff can access um for a more enhanced uh student life. So, there'll be an IT bookstore at the bottom left. We have a college and career up north of that, um which will actually open up into the student center. And so, we're providing these spaces so that the student center becomes that destination for students. Um, if you were looking at the demo plan, you notice that I mentioned
that a lot all those spaces that were band, choir, fine arts, those are being demolished. Well, we had to find a new place for that. So, if you look up north, you'll see that there's um that purplish color. That is all of the new relocated fine art spaces um to get the student center to work where it's at, and we're also resolving some accessibility issues with that as well, um getting um some greater access to the back of stage. Um, this is just a floor plan kind of showing a little bit more detail of that. Um we're also be updating some of the toilet rooms and providing um new toilet rooms nearby the auditorium in the south there in the gray. You can kind of see uh we'll have um multiple um multiple uh storage
rooms and spaces that accommodate the student center as well. But, you could see the proximity of the student entry to the student center, cafeteria, and the auditorium is very prominent in this this plan here. If we look at level two, you can start to see a little bit of the three-dimensionality of the student center. So, So see that there it's a double-height space. There'll be a feature stair which gets you up to a second level mezzanine. And that will also serve another student support space up top. We have a math, writing, and testing center, um which will support the students throughout the school day. Um if you look a little closer at number five, that is the retail kiosk. So basically what that is is a place for, let's say you there's a play and
you want to sell tickets, or maybe there's brochures that need to be displayed, or maybe it's Valentine's Day and you know a student group wants to sell flowers um to students. Um this that'll house those type of activities um and give it more of a specific um home um within the student center. Um this feature stair will also not only be there for, you know, traveling up up to the second floor, but there will be gathering platforms on that as well. Um if we make a right down the hallway, when you see that tan-looking color there and and plan, those are multi-purpose rooms. And so those spaces will be very uh flexible utilized um could be utilized for testing and other uh flexible activities. And each of those walls could actually open up to one
another for um even an even more flexible uh program. This is another uh plan here of the level two just to give you a little more detail. That gray box at the north, um so that's actually a lower mass of what is the new band and choir spaces. So that's designed in a way so it's separated acoustically and it gives its its own space. Those need double-height volume, so that's what that is there. Um as we move into the exterior design, so if you've seen Joliet West, you know that has a very distinct exterior feature. It's mid-century brick. Um you got the red coping and it's it's really distinguishable, right? You know that it's all all one campus. And so we wanted to make sure that what we did for the exterior design was something
that could complement um what is already there. And with strong roots of Joliet, uh you know, the city of stone, we often think of limestone, but there's actually history as well in terracotta with the Rialto Theater. And so what we're trying to do with our new addition here is to incorporate terracotta as a new unique material that could be rooted into the history of Joliet, but that can also complement um the exterior expressions that are currently at the school. So if you look at this photo here, we're standing in the parking lot and looking at the student entryway. Um that building that you see that's a little bit high low-rise, high-rise, that's where that existing auditorium and fine arts building is. On the right-hand side, where it's curved, that's the cafeteria. And so just kind
of remember this view as we transition into the new student center rendering. Wow. So this will be the new student center addition. Um you could see um see that it makes a statement. It's coming out to the street. You know, you have a very distinguish um exterior which complements the existing building. We wanted to provide more glass into this addition um knowing that throughout the school that there wasn't as much um glass present, so we really wanted to capitalize on double-height glass to kind of show off that student center space, but also be mindful of the western glazing and sunlight. Um you could see that that box that's pulled out there, that we call that the music box. That's where the band and choir spaces are and that expression is kind of being pulled through
the building there. Um this is looking at a view um off of the corner of Larkin and Glenwood Ave. Um and and keeping that terracotta rain screen um throughout the building, it kind of wraps around the student center. We'll also be incorporating some branding to kind of um exemplify, you know, school pride um on on the other side of the street as well. Looking at a little deeper, so I mentioned the terracotta, it's a rain screen system. Well, we'll be utilizing a mix of semi-gloss, matte finish to kind of give it a more uh randomized appearance similar to what you see in the modern brick that's already um in place in the existing conditions. We'll be providing a lot of glass um as well as limestone base to kind of ground that and opportunities for,
you know, window glazing, brand school branding. Right there you kind of see the W logo for Joliet West kind of at the featured uh location of where you can see right into the double-height student center space. And this is a shot looking back at that double-height glass. You can see the W and you know, we'll also be providing a uh a little bit of like a plaza type feel as you enter the building. We want to we want want the identity of the school to kind of come through from the exterior of the building seen from the community and and something that students can remember each day as they enter the building. Um uh another feature that we want to read through from the exterior is what we're calling the wood trellis ceiling feature. And
so we want this to be something that kind of unifies the new addition across the building um and we want that to be visible from the exterior through the glass. And so if we were stepped inside of the building, you could kind of get a sense of how that kind of floats above the ceiling. Um there's a lot of diagonal patterns and um motifs throughout all of the projects that we've worked on through the LRFP, so we're really trying to capitalize that with the ceiling um to really kind of tie that together and and give it a more unique and profound uh feeling. As you get a little closer, you get a sense. There's that feature stair on the right. Get a little closer. There's opportunity for small group rooms kind of dispersed throughout this
center, so there's places for students and staff to be flexible with um any any course course work or group work to give student choice throughout this addition. At the level a level two, you're taking a look at what we see on the right as math, writing, and testing center. And this is a view towards one of within one of the multi-purpose rooms. You can kind of get a sense that um they will open up to one another and you do get a little bit of the feel of the exterior building coming in. That's another shot at the corner there, so you get a little more glass. It's my turn now. Well, the fun's over. >> [laughter] >> So this is at schematic design level, so it's early in the design process. As they go through
the next phase to just develop the design into design development and then the construction documents. So we'll have other estimates as we go forward. Uh so right now what we've done is we've taken the student center, which is the the actual construction project for the student center as a project and an estimate for that. Uh that includes the renovation portion, the actual addition, and all the site work and utilities associated with it. We then also separated the area C re-roof as a separate project to estimate. So that's the the uh third column um after the description. We totaled that and we are carrying an alternate bid and that is for replacing the existing stage and back of stage flooring. Uh it's it's in need of replacement, but we want to bid it as an alternate
right now to get that number and then make a decision whether that wants to be done. As we break down our estimate, the first uh row of numbers at subtotal construction, that's really the brick and mortar of the project. That's the actual work. Um since we're in schematic design and we have a ways to go through design and below the line we are carrying escalation, design contingency to bring us through all the other various stages of design into bidding, and then construction contingency is the number that stays there during construction for to to address unforeseen conditions as we open up the ground or open up a wall, find something that needs to be addressed that nobody saw before. Uh below the line we have the owner's cost. We also call it soft cost. That's the
CM management, insurance, reimbursables. Miscellaneous owner cost includes all the testing, surveying, um bidding that needs to happen and then professional services cost. As each of those total for the student center, it's 39.965 million. For the area C roof, it's 3.1 million. That totals to 43.1 million and then the stage right now is estimated at 368,000. As we go through the next level of estimating, we'll keep updating those numbers. Um and then design you'll see design contingency start fluctuating whether it will go down, maybe something happens in design that that number needs to go up into the construction cost. Okay. And and I just want to add, just to reiterate um to the board, uh it seemed like just yesterday that we presented the master facilities plan and I shared that um that we would have
enough funds to get us through phase four at each campus. And this is phase four of West. So we're there for West um in regards to this. At Central, um phase three, we're in the middle of finished part of it and then the other part will be presented next month. And then obviously phase four, which will be PPS, locker room, and the auditorium floor at Central would be the end of phase four. And right now we're projecting to be under budget of about $4 million total for all projects. Um great testament to the team, the hard work that we put together um every day, you know, two, three times a week, sometimes more, but it's all for a great cause and you can see here what is being presented will be a great addition to
uh the West Campus. Yep. Just want to thank the team. Thank you. And the board. I I just have a quick question. I didn't see an elevator um to get up to that second second level. Is there an elevator or ramping? There's an elevator. Yes, there There is an elevator there. There's also ramping. Um the the um music area is a little bit lower and there's ramps for that as well to get to that. So everything's accessible. I have a question. Slide 122 through 26A. And then the outside picture. To me, it looks like you're going to have a regular rubber roof and then this would be lighting. Or will this be actual lighted like panels that are that the sun light in? The ceiling? Yeah, the ceiling. >> So that we have a mix.
So there's some areas where it's a a ceiling type for acoustic reasons. We need some acoustic cuz there's a lot of hard surfaces. We don't want it to be too loud. But there are areas where we have skylights that will be shining light as well down through throughout. Cuz according to these pictures, it kind of looks like it's a giant skylight which would be almost impossible to do for a roof. >> Yeah, it's not a giant skylight. It doesn't look like that just cuz of the glow of the renderings. And also this is really early in design. So we're going to refine this. It's very clean looking right now. We're going to add more details as we develop the design and we'll give you an update to present the interior finishes later and some of
these other interior spaces. We'll get some We'll give you guys an update with what where we are for those as well. And then picture 125 would be that kind of a second floor area. 125 picture. Is that this one? Correct. The one picture's the whole thing and then 125 looks like it's Is that the second floor? >> a second floor kind of hallway. Mhm. Yeah, this is just the second floor. And there are skylights right there, right, Carmen? Yeah, that's a light monitor. So it's like a vertical plane of glass and light comes through. So it's basically going to be just a few skylights and then lighting. Correct, yeah. Cuz according to the pictures, it looks like a which is awesome. Looks like a giant skylight which would be almost impossible to do. So no,
they're just select areas where we have skylights that are very strategic and everything else is done through lighting and ceilings. Oh, okay. Thank you. I just want to add that um this is very exciting. Thank you to all the meetings that everybody does. Um our consultants as well as our internal um you know, staff members, but also I think why this is so exciting and important is um we really looked at our master plan to try and make sure that we had equitable spaces at the campuses. Um and so this allows for some unique spaces that West doesn't have that Central had when we added the galleria and the multi-purpose rooms. Um and so this is really exciting because that'll give us sort of the equity um but also the autonomy. Uh the things that
make the buildings different. So it's it's beautiful. Thanks. Thank you. >> [applause] >> All right, we're going to move then to action items at this time. Start with action item A, agreement with GTHS and Two Teach Global Partnership. Do we have a motion? So moved. Second. I'll second it. Do we have any discussion? I just wanted to um emphasize uh that actually this came out of the work um from our our return on investment research project that we did first semester and with the findings that we shared with board last month uh and what we've learned is that um we had a void of professional development for their continuing professional development um uh for our special ed teachers related to instruction. So there's two parts to it within the memo. One is about um specially
designed instruction for all special ed teachers and then the other part is about um uh co-teaching. So we're really excited. Um this has been an an ask from our bargaining unit uh about um professional development and it's it's just the um it was nice to connect it to the return on investment project that we did um first semester. Awesome. So many questions. Will the teachers that are participating in that be able to receive um professional development hours that they can use towards their recertification? Uh yes, for recertification, yes. We'll do We'll do yes. Continuing education hours, yep. >> Okay. Thank you. All right. Any other discussion? Roll call, please. Dr. Huntington? Yes. Mr. Coffee? Yes. Mrs. Stebbins? Yes. Mr. Kennedy? Yes. Mr. Fitzpatrick? Yes. Mrs. Greenwood Miller? Yes. All right. On action item B, motion
passes. Approval to amend the 2026-2027 school calendar. Do we have a motion to approve? So moved. Second. Any discussion? Um I just want to share this is us being proactive, but we do not have a crystal ball to know exactly what's going to happen. Um but we did talk to um uh the teachers union about this as well. Senate Bill 35 or 3511 has been filed and it would make general election days a school holiday every year. Um but we will not know if it's passed until this summer. It did get an extension. So this happened to us before. You find out in the summer. You can't add a day at the beginning of the school year once we're in the summer. People have every planned everything. So when you look at our school calendar,
what we wanted to avoid is having an additional day after the Memorial Day holiday. So in an effort to be proactive, the amend amended calendar would add We would start a day early then the November election day would either be a holiday or it would be a non-attendance day depending on if it's passed or not. So if it is a holiday, it's a legal holiday in Illinois, it's like every other holiday that exist. Our offices are closed um and so forth. If it would be a non-attendance day, it would be a non-attendance day for students and 10-month staff. But 12-month staff will still report. So we just didn't have a better way to um address this and the way that it was addressed last time was not favorable for anybody and so this is our
effort to be proactive and we shall see what happens. Any concern at like So my issue is like attendance on that Monday. November So that absolutely would be a concern. Um but it's a concern in November. There's multiple holidays in November already. It was a concern last time, too. Right. Um we we again, we don't know what's going to happen. So it's absolutely not ideal, but the timing is just really, really bad. Um and it did not move out of committee, but it did get an extension. So that's the hard part that we're up against and again, um there were options, but the there's really two that we we would work with because all the other holidays are already legal holidays in our contracts and and so forth and so. What are your feeders doing?
We will share We always share our calendar with them. Um many of our sender schools are polling places. Um at or at least different schools like Troy and 86 have polling places within their schools. So when you have a polling place within your school, you can do an e-learning day. Right. Um that doesn't work for us. So it's a little different depending on what the school. Obviously, if this passes legislation, it'll be a holiday for everybody and everyone will have to amend their calendar. Does did the bill makes it effective immediately? For next year. For 2026. And this is what happened before. Um it happened in the fall. Like and we had to change it was right before I want to say the October holiday and it was far too late, but even in that
circumstance, the only option was to add to the end of the year because people had plans for the holidays and everything. So again, we're trying to be proactive because at least then people can set their calendars and know. It's It's not optimal. >> It It's not. And I guess I guess I was just saying like you could still like build in an a non-attendance day, but maybe hold like I would rather move that attend non-attendance day. Let's say we start early. We We have our contingency plan for that Tuesday. Let's say it doesn't go and we want to have school on that Tuesday. Couldn't we move a non-attendance day to that Tuesday of Thanksgiving week? That way it doesn't necessarily negatively impact attendance for that one day. We could um the hard part is people
plan and they plan for any days that are off or not off and so that could be problematic and that's the problem we had before um with um trying to maybe sub out a holiday. So it You could do all of those things, but it's probably going to cause um a problem for somebody who planned something because we get our holiday or we get our calendar out and then people plan, you know, Right, but I'm saying like if you if you don't say, I mean if the if the caveat is we have an extra day in this in this semester and then we find out that we have to take it the holiday, boom, you pop it on that Tuesday. If it doesn't come to fruition during the the summer time legislative session, then you
