001School board to order and everyone please rise for the pledge Melissa Ryan here Joy Murphy here Adrian Chavez here Ron Petrie here, Amy Burke John winter here and Patrick Oliphon is absent with notice for a death in the family With that we get to go on to information and proposal the recognition and our October Summit award winner Okay, this is so exciting. All right, Jay is here this month someone award winners Jay hoots husband of Summit Hill Junior High action Lab teacher Maria hoots and sitting right next to him in honor of pinnacle flooring in Frankfurt He was nominated by Summit Hill Junior High principal Laura Goebel this summer and here's what she wrote We are honored to nominate Jay hoots for his outstanding contribution and generous service to Summit Hill Junior High Jay selflessly

002offered his crew their time the talent and materials to completely transform the flooring of our action lab at no Cost to the school or the district Thanks to his expert craftsmanship and unwavering dedication the action lab now features beautiful high quality flooring that has elevated the entire learning environment With the flooring completed and the new furniture installed the action lab has become a truly amazing space for our students one that inspires creativity collaboration and innovation While mrs. Hoots has been the heart and soul of the action lab and one of our program's strongest advocates bringing Jay along for this Journey has proven to be a tremendous blessing his contribution reflects the very best of community partnership and servant leadership We sincerely thank Jay for his meaningful contribution to Summit Hill Junior High his work will

003impact students for years to come and We are deeply grateful in addition your wife says are you ready for this? This is in public I'm so grateful to my husband Jay for donating new floors for my classroom. I've had the privilege of witnessing the incredible work He's done to improve our schools over the years, and I'm especially thankful that he was able to transform my own learning space He thinks he's just updating floors in schools But what's really going on is the enhancement of an entire learning environment? The fresh modern flooring makes the classroom brighter cleaner and more inviting a space where students feel comfortable Focused and proud to learn thank you Jay for all that you've done for our schools and our students and congratulations on your summit award Would you please come forward?

004Jay, thank you so much. That was very generous and kind only 75 more floors to go Jay I To our freedom of information So we had several foyers seven are listed on the agenda This evening the requests were made by a variety of different requesters and all were completed or addressed in the appropriate time frame and For see public comments Lisa brace Good evening. My name is Lisa brace, and I'm a Summit Hill parent and taxpayer Tonight I just want to talk a little bit about the SRO because there's been a little scuttlebutt about it, and I think Just I think people would like some feedback on some things I know Everybody you know you get get two sides of this the people who say oh We don't want to spend any money on an

005SRO and the people that say we want an SRO in every building which Feasibly fiscally isn't the most responsible way that we could do this because we don't want us. You know overspend but I think there's a lot of in between that I think people aren't aware of what's happening and They just like some some feedback. I know in previous meetings when we were proposing different options We were talking about Cycling our SRO between the different buildings and doing some stuff In the different buildings and doing some things to kind of keep anybody from knowing where SRO is at any time You know primarily He's stationed out of the junior high, but for security purposes obviously we don't want to say well from two to four He's in this building and six to Seven he's

006in that building. You know so I think maybe some feedback on the percentages of where when he's cycling around to the other buildings and Just some idea that that there it we are trying to do this in a way that's both fiscally responsible But say for our students, I think When we hear about incidents happening like the thing on Harlem and the thing at the junior at the high school this week I think there's definitely value in our SRO and I think it's a good thing to have I just think people need to hear a little bit more more about what's going on without giving away too much of the plan behind it And the other thing that someone brought up is you know we you know we closed our schools We're kind of adjusting

007to that After a year, but they were curious Financially have we seen the supposed gains that this is this is going to be have we any way to yet to determine whether? There was significant savings and benefit to this It obviously was very stressful there was a lot of costs that had to happen With this closure we open open Mary drew the other half of it up for the for the little EC students And and we had to make more you know play space and parking at Rogus so people are kind of curious reflecting What's their actual? You know significant financial savings for all the drama that's created in our community and the and the changes that Affected you know communities like where I live in Arbery that lost our Our school and you know

008square at least was replaced with another Park district community center, but those of us in Arbery really took a big hit with the loss of our school So we like to understand if you know If there's really a long-term savings, or was this just a Big hullabaloo that just caused a lot of drama in our district, so That's really all I had for this this month, but you know thanks guys Thank You Lisa Very timely so I do actually have something that I was going to do it in the superintendent's report But it seems very timely now The SRO has been a topic of interest so I wanted to offer a few brief remarks regarding our SRO I want to again welcome deputy Justin Farkas to the Summit Hill School District 161 family now in

009his fourth week here as our SRO Justin's primary location is Summit Hill junior high But he has already visited each district school as he settles in and gets to know our building layouts our staff our students and our community even better For clarity Walker intermediate school falls within the jurisdiction of Tinley Park and DJR falls into the jurisdiction of Frankfurt However all schools are within Will County One of the several reasons that the board opted to work with the Will County Sheriff's Department on the SRO project The important thing is that we all work together to ensure the safety of everyone who enters our buildings as such Justin was present at Walker's back to school bash and was also present at their school safety drill And he's frequent to the Indian Trail drop-offs and pickups

010and more and he will continue to make his presence felt across our entire district in all of our schools Thank you very much, dr. Redurrent Um Communication letters and communications can be found in the back of the board book and then a 4e We have a student our student board members report. Hello everyone Thank you for allowing me to speak to the board today During the month month of September. Dr. McDermott and I sat down for a meeting to address concerns about our schools One of the main items we talked about was our schools lunches According to a study conducted by UC Berkeley it revealed that students who ate higher quality lunches performed better on state tests and raised their achievement by at least four points So dr. McDermott and I created a survey and

011released it to the students of shjh To ask them if they would be willing to do a taste testing to decide what food items they would prefer to be served during school from the students I have had Conversations with this about it has shown that most students were excited for this improvement in our schools lunches and even more excited that they Were included in deciding what they got to eat Dr. McDermott, and I hope that these changes will improve our students focus and dedication to school by giving them something to look forward to every day Thank you This time we'll move on to fire of air action items consent agenda I move that we approve the items on the consent agenda for this meeting as presented including 5a 1a regular session meeting minutes of September

01217 2025 5a 1b Finance Committee meeting minutes October 2nd 2025 5a 2 approval of August Treasurer's slash financial report 5a 3 approval of the bills list of October 15 2025 5a 4 approval of retirement Resignation of staff retirement of staff Lisa Jenner effective June 30th 2026 resignation of staff Diana Ruba Kalba effective October 7 2025 Deanna Beatty effective October 10 2025 approval of family medical leave none at this time 5a 6 improved approval of employment of staff Lori Cunningham FMLA teacher at Rogus Lauren cloth FMLA teacher at Rogus Amanda Allen paraprofessional at Indian Trail Caitlin Cardamoni paraprofessional at Rogus Patricio Flores paraprofessional Rogus Hernando Villalobos Gonzales night custodian at Rogus 5a 7 approval of stepping stones group agreement of services 5a 8 approval of second and final reading of board policies 5a 10 approval of

013the 2025 26 administrative certified Non-certified paraprofessional and custodial handbooks 5a 11 approval of resolution of unneeded surplus 5a 12 setting the graduation date for May 26 2026 I will pull 5a 13 for Brian the talk separately So can I have a motion? The consent and we'll have to read 5a 9 one more time that one got skipped over. Sorry. Oh 5a 9 oh approval of cleaning it was an approval custodial cleaning supplies budget and purchase of new equipment so moved second role call Melissa Ryan So if you want to talk about something on the consent agenda you need to make a motion to remove it they need to vote on it and then it's called separately So if you want to talk about something on the consent agenda you need to make a motion to

014remove it they need to vote on it and then it's called separately So right now we have The roll call let's finish the roll call then we can have discussion and modify anything Melissa Ryan I Joy Murphy Adrian Chavez hi John winter hi Amy Burke hi Ron Petrie. Hi. Okay now the question That's a great question and I'll have Julie and Brian help me with this as well But if you look at page 96 your board book, there are a few examples of declared surplus And whether we sell that to the community or a wholesaler depends on the quality of the device And what we expect for the rate of return on that device The last thing we want to do is sell something to the community and have it not be functioning properly or

015have it be outdated And so a couple of examples on page 96 are the old copiers We did sell one to Frankfurt Square Park District one to Lincoln way 843 and then the rest were wholesale Old district cell phones There was an opportunity for us to upgrade the cell phones I believe it was for free and so anytime we can sell something that we're not using and return that money to the budget So we can use it to purchase something else for our kids. Then we try to jump it those opportunities Julie Brian, do you have anything you want to add on that? So a couple other things that we're looking at so dr. Paul is absolutely correct. We had You know copiers and some cell phones that we're looking to You know gain whatever

016money we could possibly off of them. We have our old access points that have been sitting in boxes for years again The idea is to try to get some value for them or you you know recycle them and you get no value So by you being able to pass this resolution for us It just gives Kevin and I the opportunity to try to go out and try to get some type of money for for them Another thing that I would be looking to try to do too is The old security cameras that were a part of our our district. They're still good to somebody again if I can get You know a few bucks. I mean we have 50 60 70 of them sitting out here. So 60 60 70 of them sitting out here,

017so You know anything I can do again We can either again recycle them and they they get a zero dollars Or if I can get a little bit of money for them That's money that goes back into our budget that you know helped fund that project or future projects that we want to do with Let me jump in and then is this more a procedural type of question where you would want to see like Like an inventory of items that we're considering Wholesalings onto the public selling to staff prior to moving forward to do that Does that make more sense? We have them we have them in storage It's it's a little more complicated than that though because we can't just say these are Thirty dollars everyone come and get them. We have to have

018them valued. We have to have a bidding process We have to I mean it's it's complicated No, it really it depends on the characteristic of the property and what like what it is What the value is who we're giving it to there are different laws that apply to all those different transfers if we want to Declare something a surplus and give it to another governmental entity It's easier to do that than to make it available to the public if we get the public involved It gets a little it gets more complicated because We don't want allegations that we're giving away things to people For a favor or that some people have priority over others so it's We can come up with a policy and we can we can it's so complicated. I Just wrote a

019book for townships and I included a two-page chart on when you clear suppressed property If it's this kind you have to do this with it. If it's this you need to do that with it. It's it's It's not as easy as that All right My question is for julie when we sell these things and we get the money from where is it in the budget? Do you have a line that says this is the surplus money that we gained From items so that we know that we got certain amount of items from that sale Is it a certain line item that says this is the surplus that we got from revenue sales of district equipment So it's easier for us to see it Would you be able to like Is that I don't know how

020when you write your budgets and stuff like that Is that something you can write in so we know that we got that particular stuff from the revenue of sales So we kind of know what we're getting back I was asking. Okay. Thank you. Okay. All right. Any further questions I understand the sentiments though. So But but I think we got buttoned up Thanks, Brian. So are we We're good then to move on to i'm not following item 13 Brian you're back up. He's grabbing his phone So to give you a little bit of explanation of This line item here So to kind of give you an idea of where we're at our staff currently use microsoft surface laptops, they're about Five to six years old and they are definitely showing Their their age in this

021year So we are we are definitely working to Look to replace our our laptops for our staff next year with you know moving the ipads over the past year You know moving into the apple ecosystem, you know, it really Is one of those things we're looking to possibly make a pilot project using our technology task force as People that were extremely excited to try using a macbook with their ipad To to be like kind of our pilot people to see how that would integrate into Really our environment obviously purchasing Laptops, it will be a large expense. And so Purchasing a small portion a small pilot Of macbooks kind of gives us a good idea of if this is something that we want to move forward with Uh to to provide the board, you know in

022the spring when we're looking to do this as a large purchase Or if this is something that isn't going to work out and we need to stay with with windows but for us, uh, our Our technology task force is comprised of a member from every grade level and we have two Additional principles that wanted to jump on and try the macbook airs as well the benefit of a macbook air So kind of really very simply The the surfaces Are very lightweight And and they worked well During covid we experienced a lot of overheating with that product When We looked to make that change. We bought a like full-size Laptop that was 14 inches and had more ports and and things of that sort That turned out to be better. It was at a price point

023that we wanted The biggest complaint is that it has no battery life so The problem is when you try to get to something that has um Everything you want we're in a price point way over $1,000 and we're trying to stay somewhere between 850 and 900 And so the macbooks, uh are somewhere around 850 to 875 a piece and that's not with even having a like a quantity discount Just yet And so really while we know that there's like no perfect device that exists out there Really the macbook air allows us to pilot a product That we can start integrating Our ipads and using our ipads with better It's lightweight Has uh, you know all day battery and we have teachers that were excited to to start using this to see how it would be

024better in in their classroom, so The discussion really would be about you know, how the board feels about a pilot project of 20 macbook airs To to try over the next five to six months Before we offer a real recommendation towards new laptops for the 26 27 school year So they're very similar in price to what we were going to pay for the other ones Correct. Yeah So, you know if we're looking at like what the cost of a surface is right now a surface is a little bit is It varies right? So but you're between 930 and I kind of had I think in the in maybe in your your guys documentation They somewhere float between 950 and a thousand dollars for a 12 inch laptop So basically what we had currently right now

025is floating between 950 and a thousand My my question is I guess can we get a better pricing if we just do the staff if we start replacing the whole staff versus doing this technology task force for a pilot Because we already have admin that are using it. Everybody's from a pretty I mean A lot of staff are familiar already familiar with apple products What would be well I guess to dovetail to that what would be how many laptops or how many macbooks are we looking at total? Sure, and I don't think 20 would be You know be no, I mean we do get a little bit of a discount So there's a break of 20 per per unit, but when we're looking at what a large purchase is going to cost us We're looking

026probably somewhere around 330 to cover all of our our teachers and staff. Sure, but I mean how many total? MacBooks would you would you need like a guesstimate on the total staff 330 330? Yeah, so 20 wouldn't be a big no That's what i'm saying. Like I'd rather spend seventeen thousand dollars and say like hey if this doesn't work Yeah, I I feel comfortable being like we didn't this didn't work and or like people didn't like it versus spending three hundred and Some thousand dollars and then having everybody hate me. Yeah How old are the computers six or seven years old you said some of them five to six years old? Yeah, so what about those Computers, why wouldn't we replace those first and work our way down? Why just the task force? so we're

027looking at our task force as our our leaders in You know like pilot piling new technologies. And so We have one person we have a task force member from each grade level. And so that allows us to kind of spearhead The innovation in that new in that grade level and kind of see how how they're doing it They're the ones that are We've we've kind of like determined that they're the the ones that are going to be pushing Technology forward in our district. So and the admin is using macbooks. We have some admin. Yep So how are they? Can we pilot it with you guys and if they're great, let's just do it I think what he's I think what he's asking is for the pilot is for for it to be used in actual

028teaching application so if it's if it's a pilot with the teachers, we're going to need to understand is it actually Benefiting them are they can actually are they maximizing the usage of them? Do they prefer them over the? Windows laptops 100% like I like to get some you know Are the are the people that have the macbooks, you know So the people that have macbooks currently right now are a high percentage of them are our coaches and coordinators We have principals that are using them, but we really don't have like teachers really using them in a classroom environment So we want to be able to test them with our screen beams, right? We want to be able to test it in a true like teaching environment to make sure that we have everything set And

029have like worked everything out before we make a recommendation to either possibly Move forward with a large purchase or make a different choice You know with a different device So the problem with that I would think about is if we were to do the pilot and then we let's just say Nobody likes it Well, then we're stuck with the 20 MacBook units, right? I don't think so. I think you You think you can look at you look at I mean, there's any everybody wants to buy a macbook So, I mean, I think we have the option to sell something within within our district, you know sell internally We are not selling. You know, I think you sell internally within your own district Yeah So I guess I would want to understand though like with the

030teachers if If we were to be making a change is it usually do we want to be just dipping our toes or would we say hey? By the way, this is the way that we're going to just roll out a new New set of equipment and then everybody's on the same page am I thinking incorrect? I know I we were rolled out We were rolled out So our kids had ipads they had one-to-one for a while and then we got our macbook. We got an ipad with them And then we rolled out to them and now I only use my macbook. Yeah So everybody liked it within your district. I I don't see how they're not going to go with that if you're already with Yeah, I guess I was going to say we're right

031now everybody all teachers are using windows, correct? Correct. Yeah, so then you're basically you're shifting because we have ipads with students Right Yes, they have the ipad too So so everybody would all of a sudden be we'd be more uniform more which I see the benefit to that and I see the benefit To if we did it all at one time, it's it's like ripping the band-aid Versus if we rolled out a we have some teachers that are on it, but some aren't some are doing something different Well, remember, I think the pilot project is right. I mean is to get My idea here with the task force right is to get those initial 20 out there And then my idea is for them to spread the good news I understand that right and it's

032and it's how am I you know, it's for me You know a teacher in first grade is now going to show their colleague. Well, here's how I can use this macbook And maybe they're on the fence like I've never used the macbook before and you can go well Hey, you know now they're seeing it in real life versus again instead of like a cold turkey cut where they're like i've never used the mac and I'm very apprehensive about Coming up here and not having this discussion With really the whole staff that we would be looking to do this This was really I was just really wanting to kind of focus on the smaller pilot To just kind of see how it was going to Float first. I get that And see how the buy-in was

033really going to come with our task force is ready They're like they are itching to get them and I wanted to see how then that buy-in To see how they could help sell This to our staff as well. Well, if they're itching for it, I bet you they're gonna love it. Dr. McDermott. I was hardcore pc Dr. McDermott Um, how many macbooks do we have like with the admin and the coaches? in the district currently That's a that's a brian question. Um, so i'll let him answer that in just one second. So The idea is not so much about the mac in in my book no pun intended get macbook. Anyway, um It's about all the peripherals All of the programs all of the things that we're using to go along with teaching That i'd

034really like to take a look and make sure we iron out the bugs before we deploy large scale um A year ago when we deployed, uh, there were deployment issues and I don't think that we Piloted it well enough or looked at it well enough or were proactive enough And so i'd like to avoid making the same mistake as we kind of move the whole system forward And so what we found is that this task force they were self-identified They were not hand selected. They identified themselves as technology leaders And they are the ones who are out there when we're not around talking about the technology that we're using in a positive way And it does help encourage people to to want to jump on board with that I think it's a prudent idea and

035the investment is relatively small in comparison to a large-scale deployment But implementation is my biggest Worry looking ahead That's what I was thinking. What does the transition look like and you know again thinking about The beginning of last year and what that looks like. Um, and also coming from probably the least Techie member up here Um, I mean I personally would you couldn't pay me to use a mac, but again, I don't like technology obviously our coaches Do so i'm just thinking from the staff members who might be a little more like me that What what does this look like for them? transition Training what would that cost be like? Those are I guess my concerns. Sure. I mean, you know, it's one of those things where You start small and you're able to gain

036momentum training This is training that would with all of our coaches and coordinators that we have in house that are already a part of the mac platform We could do training in house very much similar to I think what we did A couple summers ago when we were transitioning from office to to google and into the ipads where we were doing You know training over the summer where again we can sit down with people in small groups one-on-one sessions meeting them to where they To where they need to be So I I foresee us being able to do any of the mac transition training in-house We're going to have to transition Them on a device anyway, right? I mean whether we're going to go windows to windows or windows the mac like we're going to

037have to physically touch 300 and some Devices anyway, so we're going to have a personal contact with with them Um in in some standpoint because this can't necessarily be all automated. That's how I would foresee training So I wouldn't necessarily see training as a large expenditure I would see that would being something melissa that would be done within our own district in in house with our own our own team Cost aside ease of transition for teachers and staff, especially those who maybe aren't so excited about Technology that I want to put leslie on the spot, but I mean leslie was uh leslie and john were both converts from from the windows platform to mac os and I mean again, are there some differences that you you first experience sure I don't equate it to any

038difference of you buying a brand manufacturing of one car and then You know when you go buy a new car five years later Going to a different car like the things are the same some features are a little different But eventually you you after using it for a couple weeks you figure it off Amy had that experience with the mac so she said she I said it took me a while. I was hardcore hardcore pc And then now I'd never use anything out like now. I only but I bought my personal mac like when I bought my next I'll be not not everybody we got it. We got also like not everybody's going to love it. Not everybody's going to Are exactly what I think big picture wise I do understand that if we're going

039to be playing in the ecosystem of mac and we have all the students on mac It would make a lot of sense. Well that and that's partially why Yeah, what I would be very concerned with and I think Piggybacking on what melissa said is we just want to make sure that it's not anything that's destructive to the teacher so I think picking the timeline as to when we would we would roll something out and then making sure that The training we I think we should give it a lot more thought as to how we would be doing some training maybe offering Something different than we did last time So i'm not sure if there's an option of like maybe in the summer if we're not doing it this year Maybe next year we do some

040sort of some training days that are maybe optional for some of the teachers so that they do feel comfortable, but we want to make sure that You know if we do make any kind of changes we we make it as soft of a landing as we can Hit me Agreed and uh, these are all things he can answer for next month, you know Are you any other insight you can absolutely? I mean kind of guide before we vote on this next month. Hold on brian. Hold on brian. This this will take less time. I promise um We like to jab each other. Um, but nonetheless It we have to be soft With people and we have to differentiate the way that we approach them Some people will jump in with both feet. Some people will

041be very hesitant And I think if we personalize what we're doing with people and it comes from a board meeting I think we had a discussion about making sure that we're individualizing the way that we approach people So if you have someone who's really hesitant they're getting enough touches where they feel at least comfortable using it in their classroom And the idea is to build people's confidence in their skills just just a little bit at a time So it doesn't have to be this monumental jump from one platform to another non completely proficient in everything mac It's just trying things and nurturing people and encouraging them to improve their practice and use the tools that we have for them And I agree I think the training needs a lot of attention and it starts with

042something that we've talked a lot about and that is finding ways to give student Our staff agency and voice and so you would customize your professional development based on the needs of your staff The only way that you get that is if you ask them So what do you need to make this transition easier for you? How much lead time would you want it over the summer? So that you can play around with it and poke around with it before you came into a training would you come to a training? Whether it's paid or unpaid or volunteer or not, but in really hammering those details out But i'd like to make it as smooth as possible for people when we do it large scale I think that was the purpose of the task force is

043let's try it and catch things before with the people who will be much more forgiving than the people who Would really panic if something didn't work for them. I'd like to just troubleshoot those things first So the task force is Technology, that's what this task force is So the task force was generated To help us with the the whole transition to ipads So these were people that wanted to help You know look at what learning could look like here at summit hell a couple of years ago So these were identified people that you know wanted to help Look at that transition of if we wanted when we had to go look at Purchasing windows if what we're when we're going to buy the the student lap student laptops or if we're looking at ipads So

044those teachers have stayed on as this task force as task force members and then what john and I did was we also Expanded to make sure that we covered our gaps because initially We didn't have certain grade levels being representative Represented and so now we have really every grade level Represented across an encores and all things in between But these are people that have yes identified in some ways that they are like technology leaders Are willing to try new things they've received apple professional Learning over the past two years and have you taken those things that they've learned and then put them into practice in their classroom and so we rely Really on them to help kind of push Their colleagues with trying new things in their classroom as well So these things that we

045hear from the board, this is how this these methodologies get into our practice So what we've asked is that we check our blind spots and we had some And there were implementation issues and so this group that we put together is to do that To help us implement implement with fidelity make sure it looks right feels right for people And that we avoid costly mistakes that would lead to time and expense in other areas And so we're really pushing our teams to do the that kind of work How many back to the question? How many math books do we have in the district so far like right now currently? Probably no more than 20. Okay, and I think my concern is a couple things one is just letting the task force pilot it I think

046because they are so Eager for technology that that wouldn't be The group I would pick I would maybe pick some of them, but I would also pick some that maybe have to learn is That are willing to learn but they're not as sharp with technology as the task force. I agree Just to see because that's where you're gonna You know We don't have 20 people on the task force, right? We have like a few and then it's the 20 the 20 that you want is going to be going out to the actual teachers Right. So we have 17 teachers that are like so the task force is larger than 17 So there are people on the task force that already have macbook airs But those who are teachers on the task force would be 17

047plus two Administrators, so 20 is your number that you get does that make sense? So the task force is larger than 17 but the teachers that Are on the task force that when we talked about this that we're interested in getting a macbook, but that number is 17 so are joy are you saying that you would be looking to Say that you would want this to be more expanded more than just just a little bit more like um Target some of those teachers that may be apprehensive I'd like to see more hesitant. Yeah Well, aren't the aren't the teachers that you have in a task force aren't they using windows right now? Yes, so they would be using They would be using this apple for the first time as well. Yeah, but I think and

048teaching So they would be going through the bumps and bruises of it But they would be more eager to go through those bumps and bruises. They're willing to test it out Yeah, and I mean that makes a difference though. So they're all windows a lot of them They're all windows users already So they're going to be going through a new system and they're willing to go through the bumps and bruises to help streamline it If this is something they want to push through Through the district that's what i'm trying to say. They're not all mac users. No, I understand that i'm just saying somebody who signs up to do that is probably like, you know, again Excited to do it and like let's do it. We're again someone like myself very Agreed and and the

049best way like you mentioned you want somebody who's gonna be voicing it out To convert them if we find somebody who's kind of anti converting it and we say hey give us a shot Try it out if we were to convert them they're going to be the best sales people for it. Yep Well, that's what yeah. All right. So let me ask you if i'm hearing this correctly would it be Would it be helpful to? I don't know pull the staff and kind of get an idea of So, I mean I I came with a very small Project and you're kind of telling me think think big We've done that theme So What i'd like to do is if we were looking at approval for 20 Macbooks and you need 17 Why don't we reach

050out and include those other three people that are more hesitant users? And pick some from a couple of different buildings just to give a little bit different flavor to the conversation It would still be the same motion that we've got up there for next month And this is why we're bringing the informational items forward ahead of time so that we can better inform ourselves when we put a motion Together for the board, but we hadn't thought of that. It's a good idea not to be difficult What about 25 and we'll have eight because three is then you're gonna have to vote. Yes for an expenditure joy All right, we'll give you give you a hard time. I mean we can do that I mean if the if the board feels comfortable with that we can

051do that for sure Okay So what kind of tailor make our motion for next month? On expanding it to include maybe a couple people from each building Yeah, okay, oh they're already texting me in the back already With that we'll move on to old business. Thank you. Good job discussion regarding student board member application on the We don't necessarily we don't need a motion for the informational item, but for the approval of resolution of unneeded Okay, so we're gonna go back to 12 and the consent agenda the graduation date And no, we already but yeah Those were already Yeah, the graduation was included because the only no I pulled brian And the only question was on the yeah the surplus But it was just So we want to go ahead and do 11 then All

052right. So can I have a motion to prove the approval resolution of a needed surplus? So moved second Roll call Joy murphy Yes, number 11 number 11 No Adrian chavez. Yes Melissa ryan Yes, ron petri. Yes john winter. Aye and amy burke. Aye motion carries Okay now moving on to old business discussing regarding the student board member application We have our eighth grade edition in leah And now we are looking for the possibility of having a seventh grade student join us as well Included in the board of ed book this week is a working document regarding the purpose of student board of education members Along with applications for two seventh grade students A discussion with the direction for the admin is now needed so that we can complete the process in accordance with the board

053of education wishes so How do we want to go through with this process? We have two applicants do Previously we've done interviews in closed session with them Is that something? we want to do rotate them What was the for the two? Oh rotate between them like rotate different meetings every meeting we want to do the only pushback I have for that is I feel like By them having the reps they're going to get a little bit more of the cadence I think that they would get more If it's something we want to think of is this something where the seventh grade is going to rotate to the eighth grade and then A new one comes in we might want someone consistent so that They do have If it's something where we want to have somebody

054established then that seventh grade always rolls over and then a new seven To the eighth grade position so they're on it for two years So I wouldn't want to alternate in that case Only in that case if it's something that we see long term that we want to have that person That student Roll over into the next school year I don't know if Having them rotate would be the best. Can we get info from leah as well? That's a good idea any other thoughts direction Do either way if we decide So we need we need to give direction As to what exactly we want to do So do we want to meet with them either way whether we decide to rotate? Do we want to meet with them? We could do it like we did

055in past just to do an interview and then decide on one Yeah Is that kind of is that the consensus? Absolutely. Okay, so that's what we'll do So we can have them coming in at next month They also get a better picture of what they're signing up for Yeah, that's true any other discussion on the purpose of the role the role anything we want to incorporate communicate I think while we have the while we have the microphones, I think it's it's just important that we get their insight We we want to ask that they get proactive about engaging with students on on these larger kinds of issues that are You know affecting their their settings and affecting their their school experience um, I think if we can Make sure that we're promoting the position itself

056as a way for the students to Actively participate in shaping what their district looks like and how their experience goes um you know, and I think I think uh giving them a little bit more runway as well to Bring up any kinds of issues that they might have on on mind or source some other things I think we just get way more creative with it. So I think we We don't want to put it too much in a box, but also give them you know give leah and any Student board members, um some freedom to do the boarding stuff to get on the board and I think I like to have a word for that. Yeah, I liked having the reports at the beginning. I love that Meeting and giving them a chance I liked

057what she had to say today and how involved she was with the food stuff. That's Yeah, very good information I'd like to also kind of understand maybe if you can start bringing The appropriate lexicon that we don't understand. I still I have kids and I don't I still don't understand six seven and I know that this is going to be clipped but Or busting yeah, whatever But you know like that kind of insight, you know, what's what's a trending artist maybe that the students are kind of paying attention to or A movie that they're getting excited for even those kinds of updates. I think would be cool Then I would know how to stay cool Just so you know six seven is fading and 41 is on the rise. Thank you. Thank you That's the

058insight i'm looking for there we go To the adoption Of its aggregate levy the local board of education So estimate the dollar amount of the aggregate levy for the current year less exclusions i.e election costs If a taxing district intends to levy an aggregate tax Less exclusions in excess of 105 percent of the previous year's extension of public hearing must be held Any district proposing to increase aggregate levy more than 105 percent of its prior year's extension Exclusive of election costs must publish a notice prescribed by law in a newspaper of general local circulation All hearings must be open to the public The corporate authority of the taxing district is to explain the reasons for the proposed increase And is required to permit persons desiring to be heard an opportunity to present testimony Within reasonable

059time limits the hearing must be convened no more than 14 days Nor less than seven days after the notice publication If the final levy ordinance adopted is greater than 105 percent of the prior year's extension As in and is in the access of the amount shown in the public notice A second public notice of adoption action must be made in the form and manner provided in section 7 Of the truth and taxation act within 15 days The levy filed with the county clerk may not request extension of an aggregate levy In an amount greater than 105 percent of the prior year's extension Unless the levy ordinance meets the truth and taxation act requirement The law restricts the county clerk from extending an amount of taxes more than five percent over the last prior year's Extension

060unless the tax levy ordinance is accompanied by a certificate from the presiding officer of the district certifying compliance We recommend that you authorize the publication of notice that will conduct the 2025 levy hearing At the board meeting on december 17th 2025 Can I have a motion? This is on 111 in your that the board of education authorize the publication of notice of the levy hearing at 7 30 pm on december 17 2025 so more second melissa rine Aye john winter. Aye. Amy burke. Aye. Ron petri. Aye. Adrienne chavez. Aye. Joey murphy. Aye motion carries Moving on to iasb resolutions with the upcoming triple At conference scheduled for november 21st through 23rd in chicago There are several resolutions offered to school board members to weigh in on At this time if any of the board of

061education members have input direction or would like to converse about a particular resolution Please feel free This information will be taken to the delegate meeting and summit hill school district 161 will vote accordingly And our rep is patrick I looked through all of them. I didn't see anything this time Last last year. There was a few this year. It's pretty cut and dry but if um, amy if um the board does find something they could contact, um I'm so sorry. I cannot agree. Oh if the board does find something in the resolution that They want to bring up They still have time to yeah, they still have time to do that so when you look at what you look through the Paper that we have and it says They recommend to adopt or not adopt

062and then you look at that and you see do you agree with that? Or not and then we relay that information, but it would have to be four of us would have to agree In order to send the delegate To speak on our behalf Like as of right now if we don't have anything we just tell patrick Go with all the recommendations Correct. Dr. McDermott That is correct. Yes, and if you look through, uh The packet that was provided Many of the suggestions are constitutional. So they're like they're rewording things, uh in cleaning up language And then as amy stated, there's a it's kind of a statement from iasb recommending whether you support or not support Each resolution so this one is pretty clean and tidy so so for the people who obviously can't see

063this can you give us any snapshots of maybe the Couple of these points that maybe we we should draw attention to or is there anything that You just really have to read through it. Yeah So a few years ago there was um a resolution brought forward, uh, the state of illinois is extraordinarily diverse Um, and so here in suburban chicago life looks a lot different than it does in Central southern illinois So there's a resolution brought forward about arming teachers Um, so that was one that I mean we really had a lot of conversation about it was very very close vote at the conference Um, but this is it's it's more technical and last year I brought um There was a cell phone in the schools and that was 50 50 it was it. Yeah,

064that was real close to But this year there's really not anything exciting Okay The red is kind of how they're changing it. Right. Oh, it looks like they're slashing out a bunch of it So it looks almost like they're kind of streamlining a lot of these points so Okay Are we good any other? questions discussion All right item six superintendent and staff reports. Okay, so Uh, first and foremost, I just wanted to read something, uh real briefly Our board of education meeting is a week early As principal and associate assistant appreciation day is actually next week on friday, october 25th So we do have a few surprises next week for our building administrators including some good social media information But I also wanted to take the opportunity to pause just for a minute and celebrate

065all of the contributions of these hard-working people They're the heart and soul of our schools offering our students a place where they are known where they are safe and they can thrive And let's be clear being a building administrator is not easy As these people are also our chief building problem solvers. They balance a ton on a daily basis and are quick to help Support offer guidance and grace. They embody the idea that children always come first in our schools So our building team members are kim zilka at the marriage u early learning center We have some of our friends in the back dana wright at indian trail colin bradley frenzy boss tracy bolfer at djr more carol marianne our hand at walker Laura gobel monica locks jason is donas and lauren newbauer at summit

066hill junior high And so I just wanted our building administrators to feel appreciated So I would just want to read that in and then next week when we actually have principal and assistant and associate principal week A few more celebratory items to do with these people Moving on to the enrollment port the board has asked for regular updates, especially in kindergarten Throughout the school year as of today We have 220 kindergartners with 17 of these students requiring special education sections or placements Class averages range from 20 to 21 and then I gave a deeper look This time we have some board member questions about can you break down the individual sections per building? Per grade level and so i've done that in the board book. That's in the public portion of the board book So

067our public can take a look at those numbers as well Interestingly because we have our kindergarten students enrolled We can sort them by buildings that they will matriculate to next year So this begins the building of our sections for next year How many sections will we need at each building? And so with the kindergarten students enrolled? We have 109 students that look to be heading to trail 111 that look to be heading to djr, which is a fairly equal distribution now. Those numbers will change of course Students are added students drop when they move But this information will begin to inform the board when we get to our retreat in january february And we start making staffing decisions for next year about who and where and why and how many It will be based on

068these student enrollment numbers So I will continue to provide this at each meeting for the board just so you can kind of track it in real time So since we're preparing for that meeting coming up in february Some of the things I would like to see if we can figure out is how we can get our kindergarten numbers lower having 2021 Um at that level I think needs to get dropped down a little bit more So if that means figuring out more space if we have more classrooms hiring more teachers What we need to do with that so we can get those numbers a little lower I think would it be very beneficial at that level? At that grade level with those kids. Thank you ronnie and also, um I noticed to tag along with

069ronnie kindergarten again this year is one of the largest classes At rogus and We have to be careful going in to august That number was 18 It creeps up. It's at 21 in some classes now By the end of the year could be 22 And we just got to catch it. Um in august Because we get a lot of kids that Register late. Yeah or come in mid-year and one more thing about the attendance or um the enrollment The difference between fourth grade at indian trail and rogus the classroom sizes There's like a classroom teacher at indian trail that may have 22 kids and then Rogus has 15 And there may be an explanation for that, but that's a big difference for staff for our teachers If we can kind of get Agreed in when

070we get to that conversation, we'll talk about student characteristics Sometimes the numbers can be misleading Um in that you may have a bigger section And in an opposing section that might be smaller you might have some students that have higher needs So I think we can really dig into that To try to make sure that it makes sense. Okay It's a good question Okay moving on in my report We're going to talk about the state report card, so it's very exciting So denise is going to give you some information and a little bit of good news. So enjoy Good evening. Sorry first time here. So, um, so today we're just going to go over our illinois report card and our preliminary Summative designations for our school district. So this is exciting information. I have good

071news to share today So it's always good to hear that Um So today we are The current view that i'm able to see as an administrator is our education educator preview mode So right now i'm able to see that but it's not open to the public yet So we're able to dig in as a district and look at our numbers So i'm going to give you an overview on that But I do need to tell you that those are preliminary and they're subject to change We don't really see much of a change ever. So but they just make sure we say that disclaimer on october 30th at 9 a.m You can go to illinois report card and you can then see that finalized information. So All right. So looking at this This is our illinois

072assessment of readiness our iar and our illinois science assessment our isa Our third third through eighth graders take our iar and our science assessment is for fifth and eighth grade So for 2025 our preliminary numbers are looking great We see our school district is the light gray and then i'm sorry light green and then the dark green is the state So we can say we can see for ela english language arts that we are at 71.6 percent of our students are proficient or Above proficiency. So that's a great number a big increase from last year In math, we have 61 percent Again, nice jump for us and then for science. Sorry, it's a little blurry there. Let me look at my notes 63.8 percent for our science proficiency So those are our students who are

073meeting or are above our proficiency levels A lot goes into a growth like that Obviously parents support our hard-working students our dedicated staff and administrators Are all a part of this beautiful growth that we're seeing for the past four years We've seen a 28 percent increase in ela. That's tremendous. And then in math, we've seen a 23 percent increase Science we see two percent But just keep in mind that we don't actually have four data points of four years for science because the assessment changed about two years ago So we can look more into that as we get more time with that assessment We do I do have to mention that the cut scores did change this year from the state We have they're calling it the right size benchmarks. So the cut scores did

074change which helps with the increase as well but not to Take away from the work that everyone has put into those scores all right, we also are going to look at our Illinois report card where we start looking at our summative designations for each building So the way those are calculated is this nice little pie chart helps us out here, but we see 75 percent of that comes from our academic indicators So you can see the big blue part on that pie chart is showing you that english language arts growth and proficiency Um as well as science proficiency and english learners Progress to proficiency is a big part of that and then 25 comes from school quality and student success indicators So we we look at chronic absenteeism as well as the climate survey, which

075is our five essential survey So they just um, they're not really digging into the data of the five essential survey But the participation rate how many people are actually taking our survey? Okay Yeah, that's 25 percent of what is calculated into the overall designation So let's look at this. So because this information information is embargoed until october 30th We got our tbds there So to be determined but I can tell you that our schools all of them are commendable or better which would leave us to exemplary which is Schools that do not have any students falling below the lowest performing five percent But also the top 10 percent of all schools in illinois So i'm very excited to share that information with you as soon as I can but unfortunately just kind of a little

076teaser for you Until we can really let you know so Obviously when you look at data you want to look at continuous school improvement So we are going to we're going to continue to work on ela and math growth We want to make sure our students are growing at a great rate here El proficiency Progress to proficiency for access testing is also very important. We're doing a lot of work with el's this year In plc's and doing some pd for our teachers. So that's a big focus for us Everything we're doing we're trying to align to our board goals So we have our four goals here ensuring that all decisions are made enforcing those goals So on october 30th if you're very eager at 9 a.m You can go ahead and you can log into

077the illinois report card.com And you just go ahead and type in summit hill school district and search and then you can find each building to see those Designations as well as the scores that I went over today Thank you. You guys have any questions I do okay, um I don't really know how to frame the question But I like that. We're looking at us compared to illinois state schools I would love it if we started taking a look at maybe i'm wrong But i'd love to start taking a look at also National and looking at other national schools and seeing what trends there are and seeing where we stack rather than just in my opinion rather than compare and hold ourselves maybe just to illinois, I think I think we're already crushing that I think

078we can Start looking at some other pools of information and seeing maybe how we can compete More aggressively on that level instead. Am I wrong? I might be wrong, but So it might be sorry It might be a little challenging to do because illinois state standards are our standards and not every state follows them So I totally get that and and we should definitely always continue to beat those meet those I just it would I think As a parent i'd like to also see how we how we stack. Yeah, you know not not only in illinois how awesome we are So mr Chavez just so you're aware the reason for the change in the benchmarks From the state is because illinois was one of the most rigorous states Out of the whole entire united states

079all 50 states. We had the most rigorous credentials for the students to grow So the most rigorous state. Yeah, so I could show you the chart too later. I could show it to you But illinois's top top tier so that's really good for us to know as well But the other question is isn't iar that's just an illinois state Test correct, so we're only assessing those in illinois, which you can't compare nationally. However Our eighth graders do take a placement exam to get into lincoln way east So do we look at those scores progressively and see how are we are we getting better with those scores going? Because that would be a national look because that is the sat or act Yeah, we that's something we can do as well. Maybe for february show data

080on that how we're doing with that. Sure Well until you might even be talking about like Curriculum too and other things that are happening in other states as well Is that kind of what you're going to do besides? Yeah besides just testing and benchmarks like what are what are other? You know success is happening in other states, you know with this. Yeah, i'm curious about what you know what other drivers For success we've got to measure against as well Not not to diminish obviously that the great work they're doing. Yeah, amazing work. We're doing right now Yeah, i'm just sliding in my silly questions. Sure The access test the el Cannot can you tell us like how they're doing? I you kind of went through it quickly So I didn't get a chance to really

081look at it. Um Is are we doing better this year with our el students or the same as last year? So we didn't take it quite yet for this year So we would have to look and that student by student they want to get to that like exiting credentials So yeah, we could dig into that but there was a slide. Yeah, just we're just continuously monitoring their growth for the New information. Okay Thank you Thank you Okay, moving on to special education Well, everybody is still trying to get used to the new school year. I already start looking at our esy 2026 so I did provide you in the board book We are we shifted our dates just a little bit this year because Typically in the summer when we have esy We are always

082up against taking a day or two off when we celebrate juneteenth and then fourth of july So luckily both of those do fall on a weekend So we are able to get in five solid weeks of four days So, um, that's why we just made a little bit of an adjustment this year with our days Again, we're very lucky to have the staff that we have because we typically don't have to hire out too much For filling our esy staff because you know our staff really likes to provide that continuity for our students So i'm already in our planning stages We just have to put these dates out so that staff when they start having their annual reviews And looking at the criteria for esy just so they have those dates ahead of time So

083and then in december's when I usually start looking at staff intentions already for june 2026 So i'm already planning Just wanted to give you an update you answer one question. Um as far as funding for special education um is With the national with the federal government Taken you know getting rid of department of education. How's that going to affect our special education department? So as of right now, we have not received any updates yet from is b so typically the funding that I work with is more of like that state level grant and then Julie and I work together on you know, just the national, you know what we get nationally So we have not received any updates But as of right now, you know, we are seeing status quo and we would continue to

084give you any updates if there are any If we receive the guidance, so I know that was pretty interesting news over the weekend. So all right. Thank you so much but paul Typically, we don't we don't get a lot of federal government money. We get a lot of stuff from illinois Don't like illinois state funding money. Isn't that correct? So the majority of the money comes from local taxpayers then the state and then the least amount comes from the federal government Is julie and I look at this we don't necessarily see that there's going to be a slowdown on that federal dollar They'll have to find a new mechanism to deliver it to schools if they diminish the department of education, but There have been some promises to make sure that that money comes through.

085All right I'll just i'll keep rolling with the report just a couple of other things Included in your board book is the pma quarterly investment report in accordance with board policy four colon 30 Each quarter we just give you an update on how our money that is being invested is performing The performance report discloses the portfolios yield to maturity at 4.02 percent And then just because it's interesting probably only to julie and I and maybe melissa is we give you a historical look at rates Um both in the short term and in the long term just you can kind of get a gauge of The fact that 4.02 percent is still a good rate of return Moving on to a transportation update I apologize. This was for last month, but I just wanted to give

086just a brief update on this Uh and how things are going with american school bus as a leadership team. We've been pleased with the new transportation vendor Thank you for making it through the first few weeks It's always a crazy time as we're working on routes and changing stops and things like that There's just scores of adjustments that need to be made in order to ensure that everyone is safe first And then in a timely fashion second, so there are a lot of delays right up front We have worked closely with american to ensure that adjustments were implemented when possible Routes are now operating on revised schedules and and really what we looked at was the way that the buses were stacked So that if a bus was finishing their route early on the first

087run that we would then use that bus to pick up a second run Versus trying to wait for one that was finishing a little bit later The end benefactor are our youngest students on buses for a shorter amount of time Versus waiting at a school for a bus to show up in its 10 or 15 minutes late from its first run Currently, we are still finalizing a few remaining items things pop up here and there students get added Students move in students leave and so there are slight adjustments in those routes But All things considered our communication with american remains strong. They have been responsive They have taken responsibility. They've actually shown up at bus stops And stood there with us as we talked with parents Um And they're much more hands-on Versus our former

088company which was much more hands-off Overall the feedback overall overarchingly not that there were not issues But overall the feedback from parents and staff has been positive and the number of calls into the district office have been Monumentally and significantly less Which is a good sign typically people call in for transportation when something is wrong And so there's some additional information in your board book Pertaining to this as well In food and nutrition we've had some exciting things happening Leah mentioned it a little bit earlier. We actually did our very first food tasting at summit hill junior high And so leah helped with Organizing the questionnaire. We sent it out. We got student volunteers. We had a few board members We had a few administrators everyone tasted the food. It was great and it was

089done at no cost So just a dash really stepped into this partnership. We're asking Much more of them this year than we ever had in the past And we have a goal And so I think it's really important that publicly we start to talk about this Our goal is to expand food offerings at summit hill junior high first Utilize our own kitchen to prep the food Allow students to use their id cards to purchase items So we have a demonstration next week with a plug-in for power school That would allow us to do that so students can scan food and purchase food at summit hill junior high And have a wider selection of items to choose from including hot lunch And one thing that we've heard from our vendor is because we don't have the

090necessary equipment or needed equipment And all of the food is being served cold like They're limited on what they can provide our students And so we think that by opening some of this up that the options are going to be much greater Which leads us into down the road? Really taking a look at what we're putting in our bodies and teaching that to our students Food is fuel And as leah quoted earlier because she did her own research. I didn't tell her to do that When you put the right foods inside your body your body performs better And so we've got some long-term goals of having culinary clubs gardening clubs Even maybe growing some of our own food right outside summit hill junior high and utilizing those fresh kind of farm to table Uh type

091of ideas to teach our students that there's a different way that they can feed their bodies So it's exciting. It's a lot. I told adrian the other day. I'm like man you push ronnie. You're right there you guys push But the results in the reaction to the push have been really good And it's exciting and it's the thing that we're talking about. Um, and so I appreciate the nudge Because it's made us take a look at something that should and could be improved I am going to do a site visit to homer 33c We're putting that in the books. They're a little bit ahead of us In this it's a junior high school, but they also feed their intermediate school And I want to see their setup and how they did it and what they're

092doing and what they're providing And then i'll bring that information back to the board who really color the conversations that were happening So all really exciting Information and there is a wealth of information someone sent in a few questions. He's an inquisitive fella And so we sat down to spend a little time like really thinking through if we're going to implement this, how would it look? And so there's some really honest Feedback that's in the board book as well from guests taking gander That is awesome, can I just add like Our vendor came out and did a nice cutting with us educating Not only the panel on tasting and how to actually taste your food and explore your food and experience your food But they gave us, you know some nutritional information how they decide

093how to create these these meals Um, they just kept on bringing these really, you know neat dishes that we were all able to try um just kind of want the community to know that like There's there's there's a lot of work that's going on and so i'm appreciative of of the admins stepping in and pushing this Pushing this forward the vendor really stepping up to the plate You know that's that takes a little bit of pushing on everybody but it's great because now we're going to see some progress and I think we got some goals ahead of us and We got some really great assets that I think we'll also be able to leverage and i'm hoping That the you know, the student body is going to be really ecstatic about some of the new

094changes that were We got in our crosshairs It was great to hear the students comments on the food I thought that was The one boy was just awesome Thank you leah for your help Moving on to 6g Closed session.
