[clears throat] >> Please stand for the pledge. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The mission of Sunny Grove School District 171 is to maximize student achievement by cultivating critical thinking skills, innovative instructional practices, and a collaborative school, home, and community partnership. Roll call. Howell? Present. Lashure? Here. Ambrose? Present. Ambrose present. Smith? Present. Hill? Present. Anthon? Present. Anthon? So, this evening we are here to present our e-learning plan to the public. Once the e-learning plan is presented to the public, then we will ask our school board just to vote on for their approval. That's the general idea. Good evening, everyone. Good evening. Um as Dr. Brothers said, I'm just going to

do a quick overview of uh the e-learning plan, what it is, and for those who have not been here for the public or the board 3 years ago, every 3 years um we do have to come to the board for an approval um to keep our e-learning e-learning plan going. Uh we are in year six, um so we have gone gone through one renewal. Um as part of the process uh it is why we have to do this public hearing, get feedback, any questions you may have for adjustments. Um over the course of this year, so right after we did some of our e-learning days this year, uh we did reach out to the community to get their feedback um and the parents to say like, you know, how well it felt for your students.

And honestly, the feedback was great. The parents uh liked it. Um and our target timelines for how long your students were actually uh participating through e-learning was right on target for what the state is asking us to do and what our e-learning plan does ask. Um and the final step before presenting this to the board is we did meet with part of the union um to get their input um and their approval. And honestly, uh outside of a couple just small terminology changes, um our e-learning plan has stayed the same. Uh we didn't really see any needs. Uh I think one thing that we need to recognize and for everybody to be aware of um when it does come to our our e-learning plan, we actually are the model um e-learning plan for this area.

Um if you were to go out to a lot of other districts, you're going to say, "Wait, that e-learning plan looks familiar. Did we copy theirs?" Nope. They copied ours. Um we're even at the point where if you catch a couple of them, you might even see our name still in there cuz we They're finding a replace didn't work. Um so, um it has been copied. So, um what I want to do is just take a minute uh just do a quick uh overview for those who might not be familiar with our e-learning plan um and just what that does look like. Let me just go over it through real quick. So, again, this is for our renewal of our e-learning plan. So, uh you know, in comparison back uh when I tell when I'm

sure all of us were in school, um we did have the traditional snow day, but um the key thing is it does we do lose the momentum of teaching. We have to go through calendar changes. Uh we're putting students further into June uh for, you know, school um and it disjoins the curriculum. Where e-learning um keeps us on track. Um we're not changing the calendar. We're still keeping that 5 hours of instructional learning time. Um and it doesn't change the momentum of learning. Um the key thing to remember is when it comes to the e-learning day, we're continuing learning. We're not introducing new concepts during this time. This is kind of reinforce what we're currently learning. So, just the ecosystem, you know, all of our students uh actually it says K through 8, but it

actually is pre-K through 8 um do have access to Chromebooks. Um you know, we are consistently communicating with our parents through Parent Square, um through email, um through Google Chat. Students and parents are reaching out to us. Um we are still looking at that 5 hours of instruction. Um and then the students do submit activities. So, it's not like we just assume, "Hey, they do it or they don't do it." Students do still have to submit work um to show that they were active and learning uh during the school. And obviously, this is all anchored with Google Classroom uh being our LMS or learning management system in addition. So, how does attendance work um on an e-learning day? So, basically, students need to be logged in by 9:00. Um they need to submit at least

one assignment by 3:30 um to verify that they were in attendance. But you might ask that question, "What about that student that doesn't have internet at 9:00?" What about that student because it was an online day at their grandma's or aunt's, you know, aunt or uncle's house that maybe doesn't have internet or access? That is absolutely fine. There's no penalty for Um what happens is the students from the day they return, for every day out, they have three a day three days past our return date to turn those assignments in in return. So, we never want to penalize a student just because they didn't have access to the internet. So, looking at the typical day timeline, um as the tech the my tech team is available starting at 8:00. Um they answer emails and things

of that nature. Teachers need to check in at 8:30, kind of like what they do here, let's just get the day started, prepare. 9:00, all lessons need to be posted. Again, we're verifying at 3:30. Teachers can kind of sign out at 3:45. Um and then um he is the tech supporter kind of 4:00, kind of like hey, um we're we're available, but not really available uh kind of thing and admin kind of thing, you know, coming off. So, but again, teachers are monitoring all day long. They're not necessarily FaceTime with students. This is not a time um we want to make sure that there is a that differentiation between what we were dealing with during the pandemic and what e-learning looks like now. They're two different things. Um we are looking at time for check-ins,

meeting with the students, uh finding activities that work with them, not that screen time from 8:00 from 9:00 to 5:00 to 3:00. Um so, what is everybody's responsibility? So, again, students, we're looking at your classroom, completing work independently, um utilizing videos, uh help, you know, chatting with teachers, uh working through the lessons that they create, and again, turning those assignments in on time. For the teachers, they are still continuing building lessons. Again, not new content, reinforcement content, uh posting agendas, when are they going to make sure that they're available for the students, um and making sure that they are regularly communicating with parents, um and with the students. And then, they're tracking and reporting the student staff either turn in or didn't turn in those assignments. And then, our paraprofessionals and specialists, they're still responsible

for logging in and supporting those teams through Google Meets, meeting with students to give them the additional support that they need. And then, social workers, counselors, again, they're following up. They're doing they're following up with the students, parents, um catching up with paperwork, uh so that they you know, you know, they have to make their documentation. So, everybody is still working. This isn't where, you know, people are getting a free day uh while other people are working. There is tasks or not. And administration, again, we're monitoring the process, being available to teachers, um being able to help um where needed. And again, principals, assistant principals, they're coming in on the back end of the Google Meets, um making sure everything is in smooth and they're as assistants and support uh along with the district administrative

team to make sure that we're good. Custodians do still report to the building because if we're closing the school, it's probably going to snow or over. We still got to get the sidewalks. Still got to be ready for that first day back. Um we can't just let that go away with the snow. Um again, just the support tree um who we're dealing with, how we're going to get, you know, we do have tech supports available by email and phone. Um teachers are communicating with parents through you know, email, things of that nature. Um but again, we are all here um to help and support throughout the process. And again, this is just reiterating um what is happening with um those assignments that if you don't have internet, what are we going to do or what

are we you know, what can the student do? And we just want to make sure everybody's accommodated, that we can accommodate everybody. And lastly, just what is the cycle? So, again, um if we have an e-learning day, um we do evaluate, you know, if we have a year without an e-learning day, we would probably not send out a notice, there's nothing to talk about. But again, just like we did this year, we had some e-learning days, we did um survey the parents a little earlier than April, um we did it in March. Um analyze work and review, see the changes. What went good, what went bad, what do we need to adjust? Um and then, just kind of put it back up there. You know, it's like a constant cycle. Um and then, you'll see

us, as I said, every 3 years, I'll be back up here uh asking for a renewal of the plan. Um cuz we do have to submit ISBE 4 for a state approval. This isn't like we make the final call. Uh you approve it, we send it off to the, you know, ISBE 4 and they tell us yay or nay if we can keep going for another So, that's kind of the overview. Does anybody have any questions about our e-learning plans, any concerns that they came up with that um I can address before we ask for an approval of the following um room? Well, thank you. Thank you. We're now going to ask you to break cuz up there we're getting our our re-approval. Uh motion to approve the e-learning plan as presented uh today. Motion.

you. Thank you. Thank you. Mrs. Chantel Kendrick, Principal Heritage Middle School. Okay. Um let me give you guys a quick quick uh precursor. So, I I was composting this weekend and the grass got the best So, mind my manners. We're in the last stretch of the school year and things are moving quickly. This week, our student council is hosting our school spirit week. Um we have our pep rally on Friday to recognize our spring clubs and sports. Our scholars will be commit competing in the Scholastic Bowl competition on Thursday, April 30th. Then on Monday, May 4th, we will be competing in the Math Bowl. Our spring concert is Thursday, May 7th at 5:00. I know that I'll see you all before the 8th grade promotion ceremonies and all of the things uh but I thought

that this would be a good time just to put it on your radar. The 8th grade dinner dance is scheduled for May 21st at Dream Palace in Lansing. And then the 8th grade promotion ceremony is May 27th right here at Heritage Middle School. And then as always, our seven mindsets, the time is now. We're going to conclude all the flowers, I love them. All the flowers of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today. I was prepared to say that. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. >> [laughter] >> Mr. Justin Kidd, Principal Nathan Hale School. All right, good evening. Good evening. A few things just very quickly. You know it's that time of the year because I was contacted by Mr. Wagner and Ms. Peters from Heritage about their recruitment band tour. So, they

will be coming over for a small assembly just to interest our students in what's going on here at Heritage um as far as instruments and things that they can participate in. Last year was absolutely outstanding with some new things involved and this year, I'm sure it's going to be even better. It's for our fourth grade only and again, it just kind of shows that time is inching towards the finish line of this year. Uh the other piece is we are also working on our teacher swap day. Ms. Schweizer, HIMS contacted me, National Junior Honor Society. So, we're working on a day right now, the teacher swap day where uh the National Junior Honor Society from HIMS will come over and they will participate in some of the lessons and some of the teachings and working

with the kids. It's always been fantastic and we look forward to that happening. We don't have a date set yet. Tentatively, it's going to be the 8th but we have a few more things to confirm. The other piece is I don't know how to say it or how many ways to say it. We are right around the corner finishing touches on our library. We're just down the block. We are just a few feet >> [laughter] >> We are almost there and it is looking fantastic. So, what I want you to do cuz I had a whole 'nother line set but we got one thing that we have to close off on first which might happen tomorrow. So, all I'm going to ask you to do is to please tentatively give me next Wednesday on your

calendars. Mark it right now. I'm going to say 5:30 to 7:00 but I don't need you for the whole time. I just need you there at 5:30. Now, if everything works out all right because I'm working with my number one person, Chief Business Officer, Mr. David Estrada to try to work this out, I will let you all know tomorrow. But right now, I don't know how to say it any better. We are almost there. Have a good night. Thank you. Thank you. And um I recommend motion to approve the 2026-2027 transportation contract track with Kitter with a 3.5% increase for the 2026-2027 school year as presented. Motion by Hill. Second. Motion by Birth, second by Terrell. Birth? Yes. Terrell? Yes. Ms. Sure? Yeah. Ambrose? >> Yes. Smith? Yes. Hill? Yes. And Thompson? Yes. Motion passes. All right. We are at item 10 to approve one of the three transportation companies. Um Do you want to have discussion about it? So, I sent out um an email, even though I know it was last minute, as far as to table this uh to table this uh only cuz we had received an email from another transportation company and uh I'm not sure about exactly majority of the board if anyone

had came up with a decision as far as what direction they want to go in. I just stated uh just wanted to give a another person opportunity to Well, I had sent out an email prior to that asking if anybody had anything and no one responded. So, I I wasn't sure if anybody had any thoughts on anything and mine wasn't at the last minute. I understand that, but I'm just saying we received the email probably a few days ago from another Right. After After ma'am was saying almost a month ago. Okay. I just thought of it with KE with the prolonging. And my thoughts is I'm going to go with I'm going to go with Edmond's recommendation. We saw the presentations. I mean, all three companies they they presented nicely. But um I'm leaning towards

Edmond's recommendation. And the only thing I I will say is if we're trying to be ready for the next school year, we don't want to keep waiting and waiting and waiting and then don't have a selection that could be made. But go go ahead. I'm sorry. I just had a few [clears throat] concerns cuz I think we with Phoenicia they did all present well. My concern with KE was that we're going to now have more students and he had limited his staff. No, no, that's not and Ms. Green can maybe speak to this better than I can, but students it fluctuates. There is sometimes in the school year we only started with no kids. Sometimes we start with two kids. Our goal is to try to put all of our students back with um the

main transportation. We just had a lot of issues with the main transportation. That is why things kept moving like it was, but we had some sit down with um First Student is taking [clears throat] over here. We've had a lot of sit down meetings with them to try to rectify some of the situations with kids. Now, the bills did increase towards the end of this last month just because we had some disciplinary issues that we had. But if you look at what we started in the beginning of the year to where we now, there is a significant difference. But Ms. Green and I have talked about trying to get more of our students back on to First Student to minimize some of our causes and to try to bring everything underneath one hat. So, I

cannot sit here and I don't know if Ms. Green you can make me say if I'm wrong or not, but I can't sit sit here and tell you tonight that whatever transportation company we're going to start with is going to start out with 10 kids six kids. They may only start out with one kid or none at all. I'm just going off of, you know, when they all presented and and what they offered. And out of what all of them offered, he offered the least. Now, he was at our price point, which was good, but even like the GPS tracking, how do you log, you know, your pick-ups and drop-offs. I saw a previous log that he did, but it didn't hold a lot of information. Um so, that was what some of my concerns

were about. Okay. >> You know, and I know he's been doing it for a while, but you know, if it does increase to more, will he be able to handle that? He's just having the two drivers. Well, in in the past in the past he's had more than two drivers. To be honest with you, I know at one point in time there was four drivers, but we've um we've decreased that down to two drivers. We're trying to decrease it to no drivers. I'm just only being factual with that. But where we're standing at now, we he's always been able to meet our needs. And so, he may be only working with two drivers as it stands now, but I know factually in the past it has been more than that. Yeah, I'm just going off

of what he said. I would just con- Should I stand up here or just say it? I would concur with that. KE Transportation has been responsive to our needs and he has not declined um any of our students based on the entire duration of the four years that we've had. So, it fluctuates. And then I would just say too, um we did ask administration to get a quote from First Student, who we currently use for um a quote for our homeless students and our special needs students and I don't know if anyone had a chance to review the quote, but they do not charge for additional children. And their contract is So, if we had if we go from two to 12, there's no additional cost for that. And then they also offer the technology

and all the things that we were looking for as well as drivers. So, I agree with Ms. Thompson to table it just so we can review it because the cost is very similar to KE, but we're getting a lot more for our money. So, I agree to table it so we can review it. It's important to note too that First Student does not transport general education students and homeless students to the degree following the federal just so we're aware. I'm sorry, you said general education and who else is there? Um First Student transports students on IEPs. McKinney-Vento students or homeless students are not general They're they're not They shouldn't be assumed to be students that have special needs. The contract um really won't be effective until August anyway, so I'm sure if we can just

do one more month for May, I'm sure we'll be fine. Cuz it's not effective until the school year of August of 2026. Right. But as I say again, because people do bid out for transportation companies at this point, we do not want to be in a position where we would want somebody and they're not available. That's what I'm saying. >> And we already looking at month three. And then this has been we've been back and forth with this. Okay. I'm just not for the way she watched in the the last minute. And I just think that as a board it's good governance to do our due diligence. We did. That's what I said. Because we are we are making sure that the taxpayers, that the students So, So, due diligence Yes, Ms. Sure. that we

are protecting our stakeholders. So, as a board, we are allowed to do our due diligence and we should do it so that we're making sure that we are doing what's right for our stakeholders. So, I mean, if we're going to say with due diligence, then when this this information was first presented to us what? How long ago? We should have had conversation and spoke on it then. To bring it up to to bring up due diligence now is is not acting. And this is a part of the due diligence because we did ask administrations to have the transportation companies come present to us. That's part of our due diligence and we just haven't made a decision. So, then my concern is when you say due diligence, we can't pick and choose what due diligence is

going to be on and what it's not going to be on. Because I mean, not to beat a dead horse, but I don't think due diligence was made when we picked the new attorney firm. Due diligence wasn't used, nor was proper protocol, nor was the policy we actually have a board policy. Um policy 2.160E, which outlines how you pick a new firm. So, we can't pick and choose. We got to use due diligence on this aspect of the entire due diligence form. We got to be transparent in the due diligence. We need to do it for every And due diligence is not something you email at the last minute. So, we received that email from the board president a month ago asking you all staff, which you And then from that, we got a follow-up

from Dr. Millhouse reiterating, "Hey, why don't we put this on the agenda? What's waiting if the board is going And from my understanding neither one of them received a response. I mean, I sent my response. Right. Um but So, is there if we're going to say due diligence, is there a reason why the body else responded to either one of their emails? But that's there. Or is anybody going to put up a motion? Motion is to table uh item K10 to approve the transportation services for the 2026-2027 school year. Motion >> Burks Second. Seconded by Thompson. Burks, yes. Thompson Yes. Forreal No. Mr. Woods No. Ambrose, no. Yes. Hill Yes. Motion to table passes. So, I hope that um the ones that are tabling this, I hope you all really look into it now. So,

we don't have to go through this again next month. We're at item 11 to approve the purchase, installation, and configuration of three security cameras for the track and Heritage room computers nationwide at the cost of $11,161.17 as presented. Motion Second. Motion by Mr. Woods, seconded by Ambrose. Mr. Woods Yes. Ambrose Yes. Burks, yes. Smith Yes. Hill Yes. Thompson Yes. Forreal Yes. Motion passes. We're at item 12 to appoint Mr. David Schrader Chief School Business Official as Trustee of Schools for Sunnybrook School District 171 to serve with the Bloom Township Trustees of Schools as presented. Motion Second. Motion by Mr. Woods, seconded by Ambrose. Forreal >> Yes. Ambrose >> Yes. Burks, yes. Smith Yes. Hill Yes. Thompson Yes. Mr. Woods Yes. Motion passes. Uh we're at item 13 to approve the Heritage LRC carpet replacement project

Yes. Motion passes. No. Yes, maybe. No. Okay, no closed session. So, we are at item L, visitor statements. Visitor Is there anybody that have a statement? Nothing. Is there anybody that has a visitor statement? You have 2 minutes. We got 30 minutes for visitor comments. Good evening the board. Good evening. Um I'm with Strive for Greatness Transportation and I was the one who sent the email. Mhm. Um I didn't get a response, but uh Strive for Greatness showed up anyway. And to touch on what um Dr. Patterson Yes. what she said about I understand how it can be when uh you may not have no students cuz me and my business partner started with one student. And as they added them, we took them. We haven't turned down one student. We have 20 something. Okay.

Um with that being said, we specialize in catering to out-of-district students like we go as far as Chicago, all the way out here to Nathan Hale and I recognize the principal who does a wonderful job with the line out there every day. I'm normally the first one there. >> [laughter] >> They get out at 2:30, we normally there at 1:45, 1:30. And uh I just want to give you guys a little something about our company. Uh we provide safe, dependable, and cost-effective student transportation solutions designed to help school districts run their transportation needs efficiently while maintaining high service standards. Um we take out we take pride in giving districts cost-effective and effective methods like rates are second to none. So, we don't want to hang our hat on desert, give you a low price but

we got unblemished record, five no tardy, no accidents, no incidents since I was like we make it easy for the people in the district office. The ones that get the calls from the parents they don't get it. We Strive for Greatness. And to wrap this up cuz I only got 2 minutes. I know y'all 2 minutes. I know I'm going over, but at other board meetings that I noticed they can use somebody else's 2 minutes. So, if I have to, I'll use theirs. But um our business model is this is why we do so great. The people that come on and drive for us, we have eight drivers now. They got a chance after 1 year to be a part owner in the company. So, they can buy a van and add it to our

fleet. So, with that being said, of course they're going to get there on time. They're going to, you know, respect the parents and do everything that it takes to make the company uh transportation company go smooth. And that's why I think our record is unblemished to this point because they're shooting for next year I'm going to have my own van. So, we take you from being somebody who makes $18 an hour to now I got a stake in this company. Which we're growing pretty fast. So, we would like the chance for you guys to consider us, Strive for Greatness Transportation. Thank you for your time. Thank you. Hopefully we can partner with you guys soon. Thank you. Any other statements? One more. >> One way. What? I think this meeting is adjourned. Okay, 7:03. All

in favor? Aye. Thank you. Yeah, you got my paperwork to sign. Man, I already signed it.
