001Is there a sign-up sheet to join? Do I have to be older to be a board member? Do I get paid to be a board member? In order to be considered, a person must be in a U.S. citizen and reside within the school district where the board seat is held. As they be a registered voter, they should care deeply about education, willing to listen, learn, and work as a part of a team. There may be other restrictions to hold a board member position, and those vary by the school district. The most important aspect is that they must be ready to make thoughtful decisions and put students first. And no, school board members are not paid. They take time to learn about the issues, read the information, and do their homework before meetings. They understand that running a school district is a big job and rely on teachers, principals, and staff to do their work well. They want to help students succeed and believe in the importance of public schools. Remember, school boards help make decisions that support students, schools, and our whole community. You can attend board meetings. Or you can watch board meetings from home through the district's YouTube channel. You can serve on district committees or volunteer with our parent-teacher organization. Get involved with local elections and make sure your voice is heard. Consider running for a seat on the Board of Education. Thanks for watching School Board 101. We hope you learned something about how school boards work and why they matter. See you at the board meeting someday. Bye!
