Are there any staff comments? Board comments. Mike might mention this, but I'm just happy to see the solar panels are up and running at north now. So, we finally have we're actually producing energy. So, it's been 3 years and we're finally here, guys. So, congratulations to all all of us working on that. >> Yes, thank you for bringing that up and thanks for our hard work on that, John. All right, any more comments? and the All right. Heat. Heat. Heat. >> [music] >> again. Heat. Heat. and heat. >> [music] >> So now I want to school. We can't be happy tonight. Thank you. >> Okay. The next item on our agenda is our report which is the committee and instructional integration. >> All right. So, I'm excited to talk a little bit about this and I'm joined tonight by Elon Sher and Kelly talk a little bit about the instructional piece, but tonight. Um really over the course of the last couple years, we had a committee together, our AI committee, which as
administrators and teachers throughout all of our district uh different frameworks and ideas to support our students as AI becomes more predominant within society and how we support students as they go through the education district. So, we've had the ad committee. It's gone very, very well. Uh, we've done some staff surveys that are highlighted up here. Really get information from our staff on what that looks like. Um, and feedback from them on what they want to see, too. So, we had a few staff surveys this year to really gain better insight on what professional development will be beneficial to them. Uh, we had a great professional development day on January 26. Dr. Mr. Gilmore talked a little bit about that. who was there for I think one of the sessions. So we had presenters from Google
and Magic School which is another AI option for our teachers and Canva screencastify a plethora of options where teachers got to choose what they thought was going to be best for them in their classrooms. Part of our committee also has worked on this uh DJ student AI integration guide. While it's small out there, it really allows teachers some flexibility in how they want to communicate to students. Is AI part of this uh homework assignment of this project [clears throat] you're working on? Is it they can use a limit of the scope or they can use it for what they want to learn? And we also have this year started an AI pilot group in December different levels. We've selected five to six teachers per level to really work on some different pieces to support our
students and instruction in the classroom. So as you look at that, our students and our teachers have access to Google Genome Magic School, which anything that they use in there, that information is protected. They don't it's not shared uh on the internet with the different models. So there's a lot of student privacy with something we're very proud of our kids that. But really, our goal for our AI pilot group was to make sure it was instructional focused. to give our teachers tools to be able to use with our students to incorporate within instruction in the classroom and and whatever skills they felt was appropriate for it. [snorts] Um, when I met with our teachers, there was a couple examples and really really good examples of how to incorporate. One of our middle school teachers had
a chatbot on Jamestown, which was a unit they were studying where the students could ask the chatbot questions about James Town and the chatbot respond kind of as they were in person in James Town get some of those answers. um have it smart goals. There's also some questions that students can generate through it. But those are just some ideas and now I really want to turn it over to our presenters because those are two people who are actually using it actively in our classroom. So all right so I used Gemini since like day one of this school year because I'm like I'm going to try some new stuff here after a while. So this slide just kind of shows I really um I kind of like to talk to him. on him like a guy
from um American Radiators which I think most of you will get it. But so I just put this question in here like I was looking for we had a test last week. So I wanted six review stations over these specific skills with like a backup of this stuff from like actually on test. And so I just typed it and I found the better the question, more detail, the better it get. And so he pumped out this stuff here. It was a short thing. So I went through, we kind of edit it to what's going to be best to help the kids with their test and just in class in general. Um so it's pretty good. This is just some student examples. I know if you guys see, but um I like this one the best
because it was very like visual. The topic was um people moving pretty much. And so like the suitcase had some stuff on there. Um it was pretty cool. And then there's all the different like stations around the room. And then the other way that we've been using it, we just actually did this today and you can use notebook LM which is like a part of Gemini to make um a podcast. So you kind of like hey need a podcast about this and you can either you can upload your own stuff and then do it or I can make the script for you and then if you I mean don't want to do this right now but if you want to later you can listen to it on board too. Um, so you can listen to
that one and then you can also make like a visual one where it's kind of like a slideshow that goes through it and then also a graphic. So these three things came from all of the same information and it's just I mean the kids like it they like this one better than listening to it obviously they can see it more. Um, but we just use it for a bunch of different ways and it's been really really fun. And I tell the kids, I just found a YouTube channel for the podcast and then they like, you know, I get a lot of friends in AI, right? So, I was really impressed with that prompt because it was pretty short. I show my try to be really transparent with them. So I say I'm using AI to
generate these things and then I show them my cost and I keep scrolling and they're like are you saving time though? I'm like no it doesn't. So kind of that point um one thing I'm using for is is called gems. You guys may have heard of that. You can create sort of widgets uh using prompts and you can create them and send them to students via email or you can post it on canvas. Um and so one thing that I did was uh I created a quick grammar checker um in the order of not having AI kind of do the thinking for the students. It just creates symbols that are kind of allocated to a key and then I have them go in and they have to kind of figure that out. And the benefit
is that they can do this anytime that they want the course of their paper. They don't have to wait for me to go in and do my usual color coding system that kind of does the same thing. Um, I had the students go through in my AP class and learn this and actually I'll show you something in a minute where they code their own prompt their own. Um, and they gave me feedback at the bottom of their essays and that was really helpful. So that's one of the things I've been doing this year is trying to get feedback from students on how well it's working and it actually did very well. Although there were some that said, you know, this grammar rule is wrong or this it was kind of misinterpreting what I was doing
here. And so it's good to have that feedback as well, right? So what was useful? Um, so that's a couple of things that I'm doing here. You can see one of the promps at the top. Oh, >> yeah. This is this is one of the promps that I used to kind of prompt them. It's like a key or sort of a frame and they took this in a key and they they altered to kind of do their own thing with it and then that was what they gave me feedback on. So they gave me feedback on the gem and also on that person. All right. So there's something else I like to do in terms of evaluation is um I like them to go in and play around and see how well AI does what
they want it to do. And so I had an assignment where they were supposed to go in and they were supposed to create an advertising. They had to identify audience. They had to identify all the components in an advertisement. This is to teach them audience AP. And uh as they did that they asked Gemini to try to create an advertisement using the prompt they had given it. And then they assessed Gemini on a kind of a rubric for how well it did. Um, would this actually attract the audience they specified? You know, did they like all the different compositional parts of the argument? Um, and things like that. So, I thought that was kind of neat. I'd like to give them push back a little against the AI and see what it's capable of and
maybe where it struggles um, just as we get more used to using it. So that's another example of kind of how I'm using it teaching the kids program a little bit and to test things in our papers and to see what they can do and what it can. So we're excited about where this is headed, but we are thankful for that to share all the unique experiences for our teachers. Teachers, right? People, right? Heat. Heat. They don't work too. Thank you for sharing with us. Does anybody else have any questions? Any questions or comments regarding what we've heard about the AI? >> I'm just curious if we could get a copy of the AI immigration thing. It was just really hard to read the journal stuff. I'm just curious. >> English. >> Perfect. Thank you.
>> So, I'll do my best. So I think one of the important elements I've been sitting on the committee and I think one of the important elements of this is making sure that whatever we do with AI that there's still a human element um attached to it um in terms of making it more um successful for teaching um and generally I think the general pattern what we've been following is in terms of doing the u institution of AI things we started by uh we've done just a very brief amount dealing with the kids and making sure they understood what the parameters were that can't just take stuff AI and have it done that way that would be considered academic dishonesty. We got that in place. Then the next thing we did was start talking about
what how can the teachers use that and we're in the process of doing that. Now that was training um the last committee as a large part of discussion is additional opportunities for teachers to uh explore options of how they can use various aspects of AI within their teaching. And then the final part that I think um is going to be assessing that and then finding out what challenge are with respect to students now that it's being used what we learn some of the challenges we have and that we need how do we address those so it's moving along and I'm very glad the support from the staff has been great in terms of attending meetings and being part and participating. Uh there's more training coming up I think in the next couple of weeks um
for teachers to be able to learn more. Some some are really happy with it because they're used to it and some of them are and so trying to reach out so that everybody can can can assess that is one of the challenges that we've been facing. So I appreciate your effort coming in tonight. I appreciate all been done by the committee and the staff all day. So thank you all. Justin's been part of that. Mike's been part of that. So, um, thank you all for your hard work. Questions? Any other comments? All right. Looking forward to more original creative ideas and uh, you don't really appreciate. Thank you for coming. All right, that's my report. Next item is unfinished business. We all have the next item. So that is our new business and the only
business we have changed March 17th date to uh March 30. Yeah. Okay. The test is going to be here. We want to put it back here using the uh the library soon after that help financial option available. Anybody have any questions? No. >> Okay. This is just motion s materials move [clears throat] to approve the amendment to the regular board of education meeting schedule setting a new date for regular meeting as March 31st 2026 which replaces the originally scheduled date of March 176 to prevent the general primary election. >> Second motion by Mr. Seconded by Mr. Pesy roll please >> Mr. Hover >> yes >> Mr. Pesy >> yes >> Mr. Mr. Hley. >> Yes. >> Mr. Miselli. >> Yes. >> Dr. Ferris. >> Yes. >> Mr. Gilmore. >> Yes. >> Dr. Goodwell. >> Yes.
>> Okay. Report. Please report our last meeting. Not second. Please. >> Dr. Ferris, >> yes. >> Dr. Bidwell, >> yes. >> Mr. Praisey, >> yes. >> Mr. Meli, >> yes. >> Mr. Homo, >> yes. >> Mr. Hudley, >> yes. >> Mr. Gilmore. >> Yes.
