001call G County Board of Education bring the meeting to order uh June uh yeah it's uh 1700 at the Wallace central office building Jody check your date and time there on the 62 of 2026 like to welcome everyone All board members are present except Mr. Jones. He let me know he wasn't going to be here tonight. Stand for the pledge, please. >> To the flag of the United States of America to the republic for it stands one nation indivisibley for all. Did we need to add anything? Did y'all need anything added? >> Um, I want to add, but I don't know if if you want me to mention it in board member comments, but it's about uh the girls golf team. They've been invited. So, do you want me to tell you now? Is that

002something we'll add to the agenda? >> Under board member comment. I need we need to approve the agenda first, Miss Man. >> All right, sounds good. >> Miss Becky, did you have anything to add? >> Nothing to add, >> Miss Ashley. >> No. Uh also move to approve. >> I'll second. >> Miss Becky seconds. All in favor signify by saying I. Hear no further discussion. I >> all opposed. Motion carries. 40. >> Uh public comments. Anybody going once? Going twice. >> Izzy. You got anything? >> I'm good. [laughter] >> What about your board member representation? You might want to you might want to talk about that. [laughter] You going to be the new board rep? Oh, >> Jod's finance special ed. Okay. Nobody wants to talk. >> Jake? No. >> No. >> Hearing no public

003uh public comments. Moving on to item five, board member comments. Miss Becky. >> Okay. Well, it seems like ions ago now, but I did attend the middle school awards banquet. Um I guess it's just been a month ago and it was fabulous. Um standing well not standing room but they we had to make it later because so many parents were trying to get in and get through the office so there was a delay. So it went very well. Um one comment I did hear from two parents behind me was that we had a different awards banquet the same time same day like at a different school an event. >> Maybe it wasn't an awards banquet. Maybe it was an event. Maybe I misunderstood. But anyway, I just thought, well, you know, we could probably maybe

004avoid that in the future cuz they had kids and both, but otherwise it was so positive. >> Uh, also, um, I had sent out a couple of dates, July 18th and 25th, for a possible retreat at the library. It's a Saturday morning. We kind of try to do that every year just to kind of recoup. Mr. Arvin, I think you said those two dates would work for you >> if they still [clears throat] do. >> Yeah, >> the 18th or the 25th. So, I know John said he's going to be out pretty much the whole month. But, uh, if you will consider and let us know since that's just six weeks or so off. That's hard to believe. Six, seven. Um, I think that's all I have. >> I was going to mention a board

005evaluate. I'm sorry. >> I'm sorry, Miss Becky. I didn't mean to interrupt you. I'm good for either day. >> You're good for either day. Okay. >> Just let me know. >> You said July, right? >> July 18th or the 25th. >> I think I'm okay. >> I'm good either day, too. >> Okay. Do you have a preference, Mr. >> Harvin? Uh, do we want to just call it now? >> Can we make it the 18th? And then if something comes up, we can pivot to the 25th. >> And what do we usually start? N. Yeah. Okay. Uh the other thing I was going to mention that Mr. Arvin beat me to it. So it's superintendent evaluation time again. Yeeha. So he is way ahead of the game and I see he has given us his

006draft. So um let's see. So >> I appreciate you. I know what you're going to say. I appreciate you volunteering. We do every year. We'll get the information to you for the final write up. >> That is really nice of you. I mean, I really need a succession plan for this. [laughter] Okay. Um, so yeah, so I'm thinking we need to review his and then go online to our policies and procedures. The forms are there and do our own. Um, and we need a date by when that can be done. When do we meet again? >> Uh, the third 16th. >> The 16th. And then we don't have a meeting. Uh the next one in July will be the 18th. Okay. Whatever a third Tuesday is because >> to mind I think we dropped the

007first one because it was 4th of July week. >> Yeah. It'll be the 21st of July. >> Okay. Can we try to have can you try to have your evaluation done by the next meeting uh the end of June? And whether you just send it to me email or bring it in either one is fine. and then we'll pick a date from July to come together. >> That's all I got. Thank you, >> Mr. Landis. >> Um, so just want to say graduation went great. I think that was a history on the the timing which everything was really smooth. Did a great job. Um, and secondly, I wanted to bring up um I had noticed that our golf team has um hosted they got invited to it looks like the Midwest Golf Showcase June 18th

008and 19th. And instead of them trying to fund raise, I thought maybe it would be good since they're a not a um money generating sport that we pick up their entry fee and maybe hotel fees, there's four of them. Looks like it's about $189 a player. That of course will cover their food while they're there because it's a huge amount of golf. Like 36 holes in a day. Um but anyway, how's the board feel about that? >> Obstain since >> they're not a money-making sport, so we have to really watch what we're doing. But there are a couple sports. I mean, and if they fund raise, they never know. The reason why I'm saying is they got invited to this, but had they fundraised prior, that money would have to be spent on this event.

009That's how fundraising works. They're not going to have time to do that. Obviously, June 18th and 19th. >> So, how much would it be? >> Uh, I think it's around in Fergus. You you may know for sure, but my understanding is it's around 189 for each player. There'll be four >> 189 for >> and that's for like two days of golf. Their meals are included with that as far as while they're there golfing, but the hotel would not be. M actually I believe the first day if they go they play 36 holes the first day and if they finish in the top 12 in their group then they play the championship rounds another 18 holes the next day. >> That's of course if they go or and win you know what I mean or whatever

010compete but >> so this is around $1,000. >> I would I would say a thousand is probably a safe bet. >> The only concern I have is just precedent setting. you know, do we have any other sports like this that >> Well, I think that's something that we could probably talk about. Um, if we I know we want to watch our fundraising for all the sports if that's something we want to allocate so much money into each one of their accounts that will cover like maybe one um event or maybe $1,000 each or something. But again, >> if if they were to do this and I don't know what the golf has in their account, but you don't want them to go negative obviously June 30th, >> right? So, >> um, just a couple of

011things. They there is a general activity athletic account. Um, I don't know what the balance is in that off the top of my head. I can kind of look at that. Um, for the past two years, we have the board has supplemented the athletics um to up to about $50,000 that started when the when we didn't have the football income. So, if you decide you want to leave that in the budget. I did not put it in there because it was supposed to be a temporary thing. Um, just let me know and you can just determine how many how many sports we have because you have to be careful with the for avoiding title N stuff. >> Um, and how much you want to put into each sport. >> I think, and this is just

012my opinion, we need to keep the fundraising consistent as far as them working their concessions. You know what I mean? They need to be able to do that and help each sport. But when you have a non-making sport, there has to be some kind of money in there for them as well without, you know what I mean? And that comes from the other. But whether that's them working concession and then athletics gets them their cut, totally up to the board, it's just kind of last minute. >> I mean, in theory, I'm totally supportive. I just want to make sure we're we're doing it um in a balance. >> I would advise the board and I'm looking for an email here. I need by the time it gets to May uh we done K through eight

013stop their fundraising and I put I think what was it 8,000 those accounts we put in there this year >> and they're using that for um field trips and year end activities. >> Yes. So what I would recommend to you all like I said I'm staying out of it. I don't want nobody to accuse cause grace golfs. So I'm out of this. What I would recommend to the board is to come up with a set amount to say, "Okay, because I was going to talk about softball team tonight." And now I was going to even poor man that brought that up. I know they're doing a fundraiser right now where they're trying to raise money for some tournaments and stuff that they're going to play in coming up. I thought a couple meetings ago, and

014correct me if I'm wrong, Mary Jane, then uh it's probably been a month, maybe two months ago, we talked about setting up a red book account for the board to cover just like I know we had like I think track team went where, South Carolina or Florida. Then another team, softball team went somewhere else. And at that meeting that night, the board had discussed setting up an account >> and then us covering like the cost of rooms and the cost or entry fee, but then they would be responsible for their food and other things. >> So there's a there's a standard state district activity fund account. It's already set up. Um there's there's two things. There's the activities and all of that follows red book and for me in mun that's a once a year

015entry. We're managing that accounting through our new Kev program so we can take card payments and that's that's been a really great thing. It's really increased the income for the general athletics and stuff because people can pay with a card. So the other thing that is there is it's a fund that's a fund 25. The fund 21 is is they call it a district activity fund. We can put some money in there. Um the the benefit to the district activity fund is it is much more flexible on how you can spend it. Any money that the kids raise, any money that goes into the activity funds, like Amanda said, specifically that fundraiser has to be spent on that alone. It's usually an issue if there's leftover money. You have to be sure that you handle

016that properly. If the fundraiser has leftover money from the activity it's used for. So yes, there's and it doesn't you call it a redbook um account. It's not necessarily that. It's it's kind of the board money and so it's at your discretion kind of how you set up that budget to be spent and it's it's much more flexible, you know, with those types of rules. >> But it's already there. I mean, I would have to add accounts to to use how you want to use the money, but that's a fund that's already in our system, has been used in the past. And >> so, can we could we use that and just say this each sport gets this much? >> You could I the things that we have in there already are um like the

017library has an account for the lower elementary, the middle, and the high school. They where they get their book fees when the people pay for Chrome fees. We put those in the general school account. So, I can certainly add those types of accounts and set them up however you decide you want to use it. >> Did you copy what we got cleared on all our funding? >> It's up to you. I just know basketball and football covers pretty much all of the sports >> that they get. Yeah. >> You know what I mean? But if we could offset some, but again, that's it's your call. Like I said, I just know this they were invited kind of last minute thing. But it is something we need to be planning for. each year. >> Well, what

018if we what if we go ahead can we go ahead and say well I guess we can't give an amount without but I was just thinking what if we said each sport a thousand that way it could all be the same. >> How much package too? >> Well what would that be? That's a that's probably I mean because if you're talking each sport, boy sport, girl sport, they're close to 15 or 16 of them when you start adding them all up. I would have to count them. >> Or or you could even or we could even say this one like golf and stuff where they don't get the funds in. This could be this much and then the sports that do get funds in be less. >> We're getting ready. >> I don't know. I'm

019just >> We're getting ready to balance the athletics for the end of the year. Um, so the working budget is not due for two or three months. We can look at each sport after June 30th. You can look at those and see which sports you think need help and which sports don't. And I can get with Christy and decide how much of the general athletic fund she she puts over. She pretty much just transfers that money over when a sport needs money. >> But for the special trips, I'm not exactly sure how that works. They usually try to fund raise everything >> which I think in in the past that has caused issues. We've always covered it at the end so we wouldn't be negative when we reported but it caused issues because that sport

020may not use that much money. This one does and then I know basketball football would get upset because they had to cover everything and they may want greater things but at the same time that's where that whole working concessions and being fair to one another. Um so I don't know the best way to do that but we do need to be very careful. >> Yes we do. And even like and I'm using golf because it's a non >> um paying sport or whatever, but I'm just saying they they would they would obviously >> we need to set the the bar of them, you know, working the concessions and that would be their payment back. You know what I mean? So, >> but yeah, there are several. >> Yeah, the track doesn't make any money yet.

021It may in the future because we'll be a little old track meets here, >> right? >> Softball makes very little money. I don't even know if baseball makes very much. So, >> they used to make a little bit. They might, >> but I mean the cost of it may have gone up too to run the program. >> You know, the the ones that make the most money are football. >> What if we talk about going ahead and doing it and then we can discuss what it would look like. >> That's fine. >> I mean, I because I'd hate to say no and then them not be able to go. >> Yeah. >> You know, because we know that we can do something. >> Yeah. I just want to bring it up. Like I said, it's

022a last minute invite. It's June 2nd. This is the 18th and 19th. don't want to run the account in the negative. This close to the end of the year. I'm sure Mary Jane would appreciate not doing that. >> Have they already started a fundraiser? >> No. Um I seen something on Facebook and I'm not even sure, you know what I mean, if what really they were asking for, but I wanted to nip that before they did something >> illegally [clears throat] following our code started one, you could just vote to fill in the blanks. Yeah. >> But if they haven't started one, >> I um I don't remember approving anything, so I'm gonna >> No mean, >> right? So, we can look into that. >> So, I'll make a motion to approve up to $1,000

023for the golf trip and that we revisit it across the board for other sports in in a closed or a future meeting in the next couple of meetings in the near future. Miss Becky so moves for a thousand and then >> we second it. >> No, >> we don't have to second it. >> Yes. Yeah, I'll second it. >> I told you all um >> No, I was asking if Yeah, I didn't mean you. I meant like we second it. >> Second. >> Somebody needs to >> Somebody has to I >> present. Three in favor and one present. I abstain from voting, but I didn't want my abstension going with the majority. So, Miss Ashley or Mandy, you got anything else? >> No, that's it. Thank you guys. I'm good. >> Well, I was looking

024for an email I got today for our final OEA investigations where they I was trying to find it here. Read it. Basically, uh on the one on hiring Mr. Marvin, they found no wrongdoing in the superintendent search committee. They found no wrongdoing what the board done and they explained why that we violated no laws way it was done that the board can on a regular meeting add prior the meeting with uh three votes of the five member board can add to the agenda and remove items from the agenda. So they cleared everyone on that. And then the other two investigations was uh I guess I hurt somebody's feelings like I really care. But the uh on one of the meetings it was uh reported that I had uh talked about close uh something we had

025discussed in close session. OEA found no wrongdoing in that said that I referenced but I didn't cross pretty much didn't cross the line because just because I referenced something does not mean that I talked about specifics. So I got cleared on that one and then the one that I think it was the October board meeting Jake but >> I don't know I didn't get any of those. >> I didn't get any of this. >> I got cleared on the October board meeting where they claimed there wasn't investigation when I used the word probably. Yes, I got cleared on that one, too. >> That first one, they ain't going to put that in writing this time. They got it clearing. >> They cleared it out. So, cleaned version. >> Oh, you all got it? >> Yeah.

026What the heck? >> But it been maybe a week or 10 days since I got it. >> They Well, they got the first one and I responded, >> right? And then they sent another. Okay. >> And then they went in there and changed it because they had in there that >> I appointed myself board as board chair. I wasn't board chair. Amanda was. And then they had something else wrong or I thought was wrong and I sent it to Jake and he read over it and uh >> he told me to send that to him because my argument on that was that >> we had an instrument in place so therefore we wasn't required on the 30 days and that was my argument on it and they changed that out for us. So we got

027cleared on it. >> Yeah, I remember that one but I didn't get the one from 10 days ago but >> we got cleared. I guess you all got it too, but we got cleared on all of our I got cleared on all my stuff and then the board as a whole got cleared on their stuff. >> So, it gives me another two and a half years to get some more OEA investigations filed against me and hurt people's feelings. >> Too bad, >> Jake. I think you also replied and >> I did. >> Yeah, but I didn't I didn't get the final letter. >> Okay. Well, that's >> I mean, you get it. >> I know they did a month and a half ago and Right. I responded to them, but I haven't seen the final

028one. But >> Okay. But yeah, I mean should be fine. I mean you all I think set a record. I don't know anybody else who gets OA complaints like this. [laughter] >> I think that was what my >> it's fine by me. I mean I can bill for it. I guess [laughter] it is it is a lot. >> That's why I started responding. Jake said so you couldn't build. [laughter] >> That's why they didn't send it to me. >> But other than that, I don't have anything. Like I said, um the softball team fundraiser I think you all got going right now or something. Jody, you probably know more. Your daughter plays softball. Uh something for whatever it is, shop, basketball, whatever it is. Uh we'll look at that probably the next board meeting. We'll

029try to get something together for everybody or the July meeting. Unless something comes up between then, I'll send somebody a thing out. Staff reports. Moving on. Item uh 6A, staff reports. Miss Angie Lewis, nice to see you. >> Hello. Hello. >> It's been a while. >> It has. >> I didn't know you still working for us. It's been so long. >> Well, you hadn't fired me yet. So, >> that's not a challenge either. >> I do want to go on record. He told me earlier he was um >> doing an outstanding job over. I was proud of it. >> Thank you. So last year when I came in and presented at the end of the year, I brought some students in. This year I wanted to give a parents point of view. Um I had

030two parents that were going to come in. One ended up going out of town, so she submitted an email. Um this year I had 61 students. As you know, we we will take some students from grades 6 to 12 that have extenduating circumstances. Uh we we will take out of district applications and I partner with home schools. two open houses each year for home school and try to sit down with them and have conversations about um how we can partner with them and get them into the school. Last year I brought in 11 students. This year I brought in 10. Those 10 are not any repeats of the one from last year. So if they came in last year, I did not include them in that. So over the last two years we have added

03121 students. Um, I am very excited to say Harus isn't even looking at me. >> Yes, I am. I'm listening to say um, Virtual Academy had 100% graduation rate and 100% postcary readiness. So, we worked very hard for that and the kids worked very hard for that. So, they were very excited. Um, I do have one, however, that was um, given a letter to attend summer school that will be coming back in person next year that was not successful and that was not the best placement for that student. Um, I have again the gambit of students. I had several students who were taking dual credit college classes. Again, some students that had some legal things going on. Um, I had four students that either came to me with children. These are male and female students

032pregnant or had a child during the school year. Um, so we we have a lot of we have a lot of things going on in the virtual academy. But again, I am excited to say that, you know, other than the one student, they all they all made it through. They did great. I have six students who are in sports um and doing a lot of good things. So, I brought tonight again um that is a that was a senior um and many of you probably know that individual, but she wanted to submit something telling what this program did for her family. um that student had been homeschooled um had gone back with a parent was at another school and then that incident had happened and they weren't sure what they were going to do and

033so we were able to come up with a plan but I have Miss Marie Dominguez. She has had children in our school for several years. Um so she's got kind of a unique story because she's been in a different district. She's homeschooled and um I invited her to kind of give you a little synopsis of what the program has done for her children. She has I have a well she will now be a seventh grader and a future 10th grader. I come to Miss um Angie because we uh like she said, we had tried um my kids went to the lower elementary here and then I took them out due to not nothing to do with the school, medical issues like mental. Um and then we worked with them homeschool. I decided I was gonna

034try um I work in Carolton, so I took them last year for the first year to the public school as a middle school as middle school kids. Well, two weeks prior an incident occurred and my son was assaulted and hurt, like physically hurt. So, we took him out and we had put him back in. and now we're struggling because both of my children are autistic and they have severe anxiety and other issues and I come to this over the summer I went met her up cross paths and I discussed some issues that we were having and um they're not comfortable with coming into the school one my child my daughter is because her anxiety just is the best ever my son to a injury that he's still paying consequences for um so we spoke about

035it and My kids were struggling because they're all delayed. They're both delayed. Um, and mind you, the program gave that opportunity for my kids, and I'm not speaking for all my two, that they could take their time, think about what is there, how to figure out how to manage their time, even though I have them on a set schedule. Um, my baby, my 12-year-old walked out with honor roll. Um, and my son did great. He's my boy. He struggles more because he is a ninth grader. But his grades were not bad, but for me they were bad. Maybe in y'all's eyes they're not bad. You know, I have higher expectations. But I can say that if it wasn't for this opportunity of me having a conversation and bringing up our issues um and the program

036giving us this chance to give my children that learn very slow that take I mean it takes a full day. Like we get they get up at 8. I get them started by noon. They're eating lunch and they're having to take a nap because it's that bad. And then they wake up at three. I get home at 5 and we finish. We're up till 8 9:00 at night doing. But we get it done. And it's not a struggle. It's not a fight. Unlike if I put them in here, y'all would have the fight, not me. Y'all would see me in a [laughter] bad mood then because it would they're going to struggle. It's going to be very hard. And I just want to let y'all know that this program, my children have benefited from it

037and I want them to continue. I our goal was to put my son into 10th grade in person, but it didn't work out. But I'm still encouraging. I'm hoping that maybe mid year next year we'll try it. He's just not he doesn't feel safe due to because he still can't see out of his eye and it's they assured us it would come back and he you know he has some other things going on but due to this program it's given him that opportunity to be able to be in the public school and be able to do work and assure that he will graduate because that was his fear that he will not be able to walk like his sisters did. So but that's what I have. Thanks. >> Awesome. Thank you for sharing. That's great.

038>> I have a quick question for you and I got a quick question for you, Angie. Uh, >> how many years is your total >> I'm sorry. What was that? >> Yes, ma'am. How many years total has your uh children been in this program now? >> The first year. >> First year. >> Can we provide them speech services as well? >> Oh, yes. and my baby comes and does speak in person with one of our >> Do you see anything that we could possibly change to get more people interested in it more? >> Um, yeah. I mean, I if they if they heard it from me, I mean, I could I'd convince them in a heartbeat, you know, because I can say that there is a need. I feel that there is a lot of

039maybe I can parents that I've crossed paths with um who are struggling to things in school that they voice out and I'm like well you know go see Miss Lewis or I don't know if the other counties have it but I do you know I've tried I've spoken to them and said you need to go talk to them about this program if you're not happy in the school. I'm it's my issue is not the issue with the school. It's just my children's ability to be able to handle the big classrooms and the you know you got to be on the move. You got unlimited time and like I said, they need a full day, you know, to do a one day class, you know, that could take you four hours, you know, but um I

040I do I really I could say I could if your child is struggling for whatever reason, whether it be home life, school, whatever the issue is, I firmly believe that they should I will I do tell them to come and speak to Miss Lewis over this program because it has taken a lot of stress off me and my children. Uh, Miss Angie, this next question. I got a question for you. Uh, when we first started this program, how many kids in the county was you might not have the information, would you have any roundabout how many kids was in the >> home school? >> Yes. >> So, there were somewhere in the vicinity of and it's stayed pretty pretty close somewhere around 120, but that is K through 12 and so this program um is

0416 through 12. I I don't have a breakdown. And what is your current enrollment total in the >> 61 I'm sorry I didn't do a while ago when you said it the uh >> took me a second to process >> anything that we can help you with approval to >> um I've been working with Mr. Arvin a lot as far as just you know the first year is always a little crazy because it's new and you don't know what to expect but I work very closely with the high school and the middle school and and Mr. with applications and things of that nature. Um I mean right now I don't have anything that I you know could definitely say but as something arises I definitely would not hesitate to ask you. >> Well I want

042to thank you for what you do over there. I feel that that's one thing the board's put in place that in my opinion it's and it was because the work you put into it that we had a success with >> and hopefully >> say I had a conversation with Mr. I don't know, a month ago at a meeting. Um, and one of the things that when you're in a bigger city, you don't really realize, but when we have kids that have issues, we have I mean, we've got kids with behavior issues. We've got kids with attendance issues, but when I walk into Save a Lot to get a loaf of bread, you know, I'm going to run into their parents that I know. I can have meaningful conversations. Not that anyone else can't, but I

043can have conversations with them. I am available to them. pretty much 247. Yeah. I mean, and I I can vouch to that >> and and and that's my choice. But at the same time, like if I go down to Triad or the clinic at Newor, there's a very good chance that I'm going to have a former student like take my blood and not have hopefully not have this happen like happened at hospital. Um if I go to save a lot, I'm probably going to have a former student cash me out. If I'm going a little fast in the school zone, I'm probably former student pulled me over and said, "Miss Lois, why are you going too fast?" >> David knows all that she [laughter] was starving. >> Or or working at dormant and having a
