001Stay away from colleague. >> Y'all ready? >> Ready. >> You ready, Miss Becky? >> Yes. Thank you. >> Guy County Board of Education regular working meeting to order on December the 12th, 2025. The year of our Lord is 1700 p.m. >> December the 12th. >> The Wallace central office building. Huh? >> December the 12th. >> I'm sorry. December the second. Oh, I was going to say, oh my gosh, I've lost a week here [laughter] >> at the college central office building. I need to get me some new glasses. I'd like to welcome everyone. All board members are present. Stand for the pledge, please. >> To the flag of the United States of America to the for one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. I need uh >> make a motion we

002approve the agenda. >> Uh 7 C or let's go six uh 6D. >> Okay, we'll make it 6D. Jody uh move to approve the agenda with item 6D uh the maternal leave option policy and item 6E discussion action on what we want to call it. Uh be a good word to call that business activity or something. >> Yes, discussion action business activity. You make a motion, John. >> Yes. >> John motions. >> Second. >> Mr. Amanda seconds. All in favor? Secondly by saying I. >> I. >> All oppose. Same sign. Motion carries 50. Any public comments? Anyone? >> Hearing? >> No public comments. Moving on to number five, board member comments. Miss Becky, >> uh just a reminder that uh we need to talk about superintendent evaluation next meeting. Just a midpoint conversation, close session

003informally. Um I think that's all I got. >> Miss Becky, you going to do them again for us? Sure. >> Well, of course I [laughter] >> But this is just the >> Did you see how nice I asked? >> Yeah. Uh this is just a midpoint so we're not [laughter] >> John so moved. So I'm seconding. >> This is just a conversation so we've got time before I threaten. >> Mr. J, don't forget to add that to our agenda. >> Got it. >> Miss Amanda, >> I'm good. >> Miss Ashley, >> no. >> Mr. John Jones, basketball coach extraordinaire. I wanted to make sure central office was aware that uh my bus driver last night, Jimmy Williamson, did a phenomenal job. Uh it started snowing on us on the way home and I would not

004have wanted to be driving a car. Definitely wouldn't wanted to have bus load of kids. And uh did a super job, super attitude about the whole thing. And uh nobody tells people they do something good for him. So I I wanted [clears throat] y'all to know he did a super job. >> Great. >> Appreciate that. I'll make sure we let him know. >> So I reserve items uh six, recommend action, new business. Everybody get a chance to review the [snorts] comprehensive district and the cip plan. >> Yeah. I'll move to approve. >> Second. >> Do you have question? >> No. >> Mr. Jones seconds. Any discussion? >> Hearing no further discussion. Signify by saying I. >> I. >> All oppose. Same sign. Motion carries. 50. 6B. Review approved second reading of the calendar committee's school

005calendar for 2627. >> I move to approve >> with the full fall break. Correct. >> Let's be clear. >> Option one, >> Miss Amanda. So moves. Great. >> Go ahead. >> I'll second. >> Miss Becky seconds. >> Hearing no further discussion. All in favor signify by saying I. >> I. All opposed. I I'm just kidding. [laughter] >> Put that baby to rest. >> Is it time to put her on committee for next year? >> Yeah, I think [laughter] >> we could talk about it. >> Uh Miss Ashley asked succeeded to put on there and what she talked to me about. She got some good points and stuff on it. It's a formation of committee for mission and uh in our vision statement and stuff. Miss Ashley, you'd like to >> Yeah, I mean, I was

006just I was looking at them and honestly I I just don't think that the wording and stuff is great on them and I think they've been around for so long that nobody in the schools even know about them because I actually asked. So, um I think um I think it'd be good, you know, I think we're we're doing good on a lot of things and rethinking what it looks like, the mission and the vision, you know, here for the school. So I I don't even know if anybody can tell me what it is right now. >> Worked like a wild cat in it. [laughter] >> Yeah. Hey, we know that better than we do anything else. So there >> does anybody know what they are? >> Yeah, I think our ones if you can rethink

007a teacher if you can't blame the parent. I'm not too sure on that, but >> y Yeah, I know that one. What's the other one? >> 21st. It's 21st century something or the other. It has 21st century in it. >> I don't know why we couldn't combine. >> You need to, >> you know, one thing. >> But yeah, I agree actually. Yeah. >> Dust it off. And >> yeah, >> about knowing what it is. Some school districts, some school boards got they read theirs at the beginning of every school meeting. You know, they say the pledge and they read it. >> Ours is so bad. I don't want to read. >> Yeah, I know. You may have to revise [laughter] it first, but I'm saying that would help you know what it is. Remember what

008it is. our meetings. >> Yeah, that sounds about right, doesn't it? >> So, who would be on this committee, you think? >> I mean, I'd besides I'd say I'd say Mr. Arvin can choose, you know. >> Oh, no. You're representing >> Yeah, that's fine. Yeah, I'm totally good with that. Choose um some some to be on there to to make the decision. >> Okay. and then just bring it back to the board and give some ideas. Maybe a couple >> unless everybody's really set on one. >> Sounds good. Like it >> we'll do it. >> I so move to for the formation of Miss Ashley's committee for the mission and vision statement and her to work with Mr. Arvin on getting it set up and reporting back. Second. >> Well, you doing that quick, Amanda.

009>> She must have something in the crockpot. That's all I [laughter] can say. >> All in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> All oppose. Same sign. Motion carries. 50. >> Item 6D. Uh or excuse me, yes, 6D. It's on the paternal leave option. Uh board policy 03.1223. What we need to do here under KRS 161.155 when legislation passed it it took effect I think it was July it said by up to 30 days for whatever reason KSBA when they done the policies and stuff uh Mr. Barbon, I guess some of them caught it. They went ahead and put it in there starting this year that they get up to uh up to 30 days, but the way the law was written, it don't take effect until 2030 and researching it and I'd sent

010Jake a thing and the uh John I'd read him a thing and Mr. Arbit the uh what I'm being told we can approve one day of that and then uh and we meet this because unless legislation changes the way that it's worded it says up to 30 days. So what they told me was as long as if we approve one day we're covered. So, what I'd like to do is to get this out of our policy for right now, do a first reading, and we will do a second reading on it to strike the first paragraph where it says the district shall provide up to 30 days uh paid maternity leave. Just strike that paragraph out of the classified and certified and leave the rest of it the way it is for now and then

011we'll have a second reading on it. >> Will we review like what other districts are doing? because I would think we right now. >> Yeah. But but so to follow up that so he's talking about the whole paragraph. I mean to be correct that is the entire paragraph should be coming out. It shouldn't be in there. It was supposed to be in there. I mean and >> David I'll be blunt. I mean I I don't even know how made it in there. I mean KSBA's policy guy being you know he's leaving so I don't know what you know if it get fell through the crack but you the only district. I mean he called me. I was like no ain't no way that's in there. I mean, so I started pulled up all the other

012district policies and and it made into all of them and I was like, "What the heck?" Um, so they're all amending it, not all of them. So to your point, there's some that are doing it that made the decision intentionally last year. Owen, for example, I knew Owen intentionally said, "We're going to do this because we don't pay much. We don't pay as much as Gallatin and they don't pay as much as Carol and we want to be competitive. So we're going to intentionally do this and offer this as a perk." They maybe it would balance out. you know, they just saw what what it would cost them. It was cheaper than a raise. We're going to do it. Uh but you know, like G Grant, you know, they like didn't intend to do it.

013It wasn't supposed to be in theirs and it was. So, they're taking it back out. So, to your point, before 2030, Yeah. you may want to look at what everybody else is doing, maybe put it back in there, but the point is it shouldn't have been in. >> It would probably be something we review yearly anyway. >> Yeah. Yeah. But it shouldn't have been. This was a typo. I mean, it's a big type of >> They put in something that we never proved. >> Yeah. Right. Well, actually approved it when we approved the KSBA policies, but but but that it was an option in there. They had an option. They had as an option as an eitheror and it wasn't selected as being in there. So, I mean, >> so they [clears throat] just selected

014it for us. >> Yeah. But >> yeah, I I just kind of want our people to know that [snorts] we're going to look at being competitive. >> Oh, absolutely. >> But somebody put something in that we didn't >> we didn't agree to. >> Yeah. and whoever. >> So we're kind we're kind of taking that out and then we will look and see what we need to do to be competitive. >> Har is mentioning it's the certified and the classified. I don't think you've got the classified to print the classif. But the number is 03.2233. So you're going to have first reading of both and take that policy out of both of them. But the >> you say the other one was 03.0233. >> This be 03.2233 23. >> And that's the classified. >> Yeah. You

015got to do both of them. Okay. >> And for anybody benefit, I mean, if you've got sick leave, which you can rack up a ton of sick leave, I mean, you you always could and still can use your sick leave from maternity leave. So, you still got an option there. You say 30 days in addition to whatever sick leave you had. So, we have I guess my only other question, I'll leave us alone. Do we have any potential liability from that being in there right now? >> Nobody in a school year. >> Nobody's tried to use it. And uh so so the answer is no. You know, anybody's tried to use it. I throw them other districts. I mean, it was it wasn't supposed to be in there. You know, it wasn't knowingly in there.

016We're going to treat as a typo. So, I got some other, you know, larger districts. If somebody tries it, they're going to tell them, "Look, can't have it. It's a typo. Shouldn't have been in there. We're taking it out. It was never available. It's just typos reason it's in there. [snorts] So the answer would be no. But thankfully nobody stance. >> Yeah. >> Okay. That's the type of thing somebody will call >> Yeah. >> and asked us about that. We only know a little bit about. >> But thankfully you're having your first reading tonight. So hopefully you know you have for today, right? You're going to have your first reading changing it before anybody even applied for it. Actually other districts ain't going to have their first reading for two weeks. You know, you know

017somebody gets smart and goes applies for it in two weeks. first reading. Are we giving them one day? >> No. You're taking that out completely. >> We're just taking it out. >> By law, John, that don't take effect >> until 2030, >> right? But but that was until 2030, you always could and still can use your sick leave, >> right? >> If you have I mean, you know, >> and John, even after 2030, from what they explained to me, even after 2030, we do we could put in there one day and they could still use all their sick leave and stuff like they have been. Everything in that policy says the same except what we're striking. >> Okay. >> And the motion will be to strike the first paragraph for the classified certified for policy

01803.1233 and 03.2333. >> No 03.2233. >> 2233. >> Sorry about 2233. That's for the class. So that's my that would be uh that's the I'll make the motion. >> I'll second. All in favor signify saying I. >> All oppose same sign. Motion carries 50. Item 6 D 6E. Uh discussion business activities. the uh we put that on there. The I'm not going to get a whole lot into it tonight, but the uh I'm going to be nice. I told you I would. The We've never allowed politics in our school and I ain't planning on starting now. Somebody bought a table. Email was sent out to all the teachers for the chamber dinner and never been done in the past. Of course, since election year since the email was sent out, I'm going to advise the

019board for us to go ahead and get the table this year for the people that want to go. But going forward, nothing can be sent out on stuff on donations, money received or anything until boards approved it. >> The board's paying for the table this year. So >> I would ask the board. I mean that's up that's >> instead of accepting the >> How much is it? >> 300. >> Oh, >> and then plus the tickets. I think it includes eight seats. >> I mean, if the board doesn't pay then then that means they've lost that anyway. Right. >> Right. But it's already been offered to them through >> Yeah. So just so I'm clear. So anybody running for office in the future cannot make a donation to the school. >> Not for an event

020like that though. That's it would be different Becky if it was want to come in give a scholarship something like that. That's different. But when you're buying tables and stuff when you never have in the past that's pure politics. And we've always kept the politics out of here. >> Just clear. I mean, you're you're saying essentially we're we're turning down this donation and going to pay for it ourselves. >> Yes. >> Okay. And the only reason I'm going to me and Amanda had talked about it there a little bit and the reason is because an email already went out inviting >> the staff >> staff and stuff to it and >> they I don't >> I don't have a problem that I think your policy says anything under a thousand will be approved by the

021principal. So we may want to tweak that may want to tweak that to say except for political donations which always have to come to the board or that's kind of >> and I mean you could probably yeah somebody could argue well that ain't political donations >> counter that would be >> we just thought it would be just cleaner just to yes >> keep it out let us pay for it. >> Yeah I don't have any problem with this. I'm just saying to avoid it in the future maybe you want to look at that. Yes, Jake. Going forward probably next board meeting I'm going to have that >> policy on there >> to lower it down to where anything coming in, >> especially if it's something we're going to have to match or anything that we

022be notified of it before, >> okay, >> it's gotten and approved and take that down to anything donated. >> It's okay. We love all the >> just to ask a question. >> Politicians have always donated to things like golf scrambles >> like sponsoring the hole. >> So are you >> John? Here's what >> they they don't typically put vote for Jon Jones, but >> they put Jon Jones supports G County athletics. >> You got eight seats, 20 people say they want to go take their spouse. who chooses those eight people and their spouse is going to get together. >> Thank you. Yes. Thank you very much. >> I get what you're saying. I'm just asking how all incompensing is this cuz I mean are you going to tell most everybody does a fundraiser hits up

023your politicians because that's an easy way to get they want their name out there that they supported you. So is that included in what you're thinking or Okay. I think if it would support as a whole would be different like the whole group but only since eight people are going to be attending. >> Yeah. >> I think that's kind of where it like if 10 people show up. Do you know what I'm saying? Then it just looks like to me if it was a whole thing like the whole school or the whole group is benefiting if they want to do something like that I would think would be clearer. Do you understand what I'm trying to say? Like if it's only select few I'd just assume the board pay for it. let Arvin choose who's

024going or whatever and be done with it. >> Just as long as we're able to keep track of it. I mean, there's Gleno City Council, there's Sparta City Council, there's, you know, Warsaw City Council. There's a lot of I mean, somebody, I think, potentially could slip in under the radar if they wanted to, but >> hopefully we could manage it holistically. >> Well, uh, Becky, we'll clean like Jake said, we we get it cleaned up in that policy >> and I'll have that on the next board meeting. I'll get it read and send it to Jake, get him to read over and then I'll get it out to you all for you all to read and I'll plan on >> having that on the next board meeting and Ashley, you're going to have your committee

025on it. >> Yeah. Not that it's a bad thing and it's it's a very nice thing, but I think just uh >> perception perception and only a select few will be attending. >> Yeah. >> So, yeah. Okay. Good. >> And having to choose that. Did >> you make that motion? >> Yes. A second. >> So moved. John seconded. All in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> All oppose. Same sign. Next. Review district accountability data. I'm guess Mr. Jury. attached on end long point. [cough] I didn't want to go through that. So tell them a different way just to boil it down to simple things. It's still the way the state calculates all this puts together. You can study as long as you want and some some of it's still not going to make

026sense. You know, it's just and they're constantly changing. But we we've had a good year. Uh I'll start with the upper elementary. Um 50% is their math and reading school their accountability. 40% [clears throat] is their science stage and writing and then you add in how the English learners did that's 5% and then the quality of climate and safety survey is 4% of the the whole accountability. There's four buckets there and that's that's how it's divied out. Um, of course you know the biggest part of it is the academic part. So just and then you know they they give us a status uh in each each of those parts of low very low medium high and very high. Then then we get a change indicator uh red bad blue good how you say that. So,

027and then how they combine these determines the overall rating of the score. So, maybe if you get a a low status but a high change, you you'll get a better rating. Uh it's like if you make a C [clears throat] and but you increase a lot, you'll get a a B or an A. Kind of like that. But if also but if you make a make a C and you get not so good change. You get double whammy for that. So, it's it's like uh on the old 460 tractor I used to drive, it had a torque on it. You know, you push that torque and you can go faster when you pull that torque back, you go twice as slow. So, you know, that change factor will will boost your score or it'll tank

028your score. So, either way, uh we always want to be on the the the top end of that. So on the elementary um their status their their raw status for reading mathematics was medium and you can see it's it's right in that you know 54 was the threshold for that. Um so that you know there's room for growth. You can also see um separated out status by content. Um they had a 60.3 compared to the state was a 67.7 in reading. They had 50.9 in math and the state was 61.5. Um, and then the state status was 64.6. So, I wanted to show you the status of the part because that's where we're at technically. That's that's how we did technically. Um, however, we did have a very positive change. We were moving in the

029right direction. We're going uh we have an increased score. Uh, you can see over here um That's our our trend data for the last four years. Uh you can see we had a plus 9.8 in reading. The state had a plus 2.1 in reading. So we're improving faster than the state which we, you know, we're not caught up with yet. So we want to improve faster. We need to get there. And then in math we improved a plus 3.4 and statewide it was a plus.7. So, uh, and he went, you know, overall he's plus 6.6 and the state was just plus 1.4. So, you know, if we continue that, we'll catch him and we'll pass him. That's the goal. We we we don't want to shoot for state average. We want to be above that.

030Mr. Arvin makes that very clear to us a lot of days. So, our status plus our change gives us a green rating. Okay. So, that's where our middle school is. not know our upper elementary is in their uh reading in math. They have a green rating. So that's pretty good. Um so we move into the science studies and combined writing. Same thing. 46.2 is actually is low. That's that's we're still low. We want to be moving this way. Um there there's I think you know this would be the goal for next year. It's not out of reach. We're we're moving in that direction. Uh you can see the state average is 62, science is 57.3. So stage is 38.3 and um combined writing [cough] is 43.1. You can see the state down there at the

031bottom. Again, we had a very positive change. Uh 3.1 change. Um the state combined indicator was a 0.9. So, we're again we're improving faster in those areas than the state is. Um, we actually dropped in social studies 4.2, we dropped in combined writing 2.6. So, um, we we need to look at what we're doing in those two things, which they are. This is this is why we break it down like this so they can see we improved in science. But you could also see that the state actually dropped in science and combined writing as well. >> When did we drop in social studies? How many years ago was that? That used to be our high point for that building. >> Used to be um let's see if I have it. >> I was just curious

032if we knew because >> Yeah, I mean I have it right here. Uh I think it's when the new system came out uh 2022 [snorts] um we were 48.1 and we you know a steady decline. So we need to figure out what's going on there. And I I can tell you writing and so stages they go hand in hand. They need to be able to write to do well on that stage exam. They need to be able to read a passage, comprehend it, and make inferences and understand what's going on and know how to answer those questions. So, it goes hand in hand. Uh, we want to see that trend to go like this, too. You see a big increase here plus 10.9. >> I was going to ask >> plus. So is there any

033correlation between the lower scores and lack of certified teachers? >> Not at this level. >> Okay. >> Because we we have certif [snorts] with with the the social studies and science and combined writing. That's something that has to be incorporated in today. uh because it's the focus heavy on reading and math. And what they're trying to do is, you know, we're going to [snorts] be reading a passage and doing some math. They're trying to put some science and social studies in that passage so that they're they're doing it all at the same time. And that's that's what they're they're focusing on to try to get better with uh instead of saying 30 minutes today you're going to do [snorts] science, 30 minutes you're going to do social studies and you know 30 minutes with writing.

034[snorts] They try to combine that all into their math sessions. Makes sense. So again our status was low or change was uh green and so the indicator rating for science so stays with my writing is yellow. So yellow's yellow's good orange is not but then really this is where we are we want to get better um English learner progress 55.8 eight. We're well in that medium. Uh, you know, I'm predicting we'll go into the high next year if, you know, if all the cut scores stay the same and everything stays same, I think we'll continue to to do that trend because the way we're teaching reading now is very good for our English learners. It's very good. It's good for all kids, but it's even better for our English learners. It's it's very phonetic, helping

035them pronounce letters and understand sounds and combinations and all that kind of stuff. And um if you go to the lower, it took me a while to understand this, but they they have pictures on the board of a person's mouth when they say things, what it looks like. You know, I never never thought why is that up there? But sometimes you have to be taught how to hold your tongue and your lips and all that when you're learning to scoop. So that is that's going to continue to help our scores with our swingers. Uh we had a plus 8.2 And you can see that the state was a minus 1.3. So we're we're really going up, but at the same time [snorts] you can see this we were here went down going back up. So

036I think people continue that this year we had a lot of newcomers that year. Well, they were newcomers this year and they tested that year. So that hits hard sometimes. So we were medium and our Our change was green and so our indicator is green for English learners. Um quality of school climate and safety survey um 79.9 that is high that is great. The state is 77.4 elementary level. You can see we're doing very good there. That just means students feel good about their school. They feel safe. Uh they understand the questions that are being asked. That's another thing you know they have to understand. Some of those questions are asking a way where you think you're, you know, it's u and to do well on this survey, you can't click middle of the road

037on any of those questions. To to do well, you have to click the highest one or you won't get into this. So, you know, teach kids to feel very strongly that they have a safe school. They feel very strongly that their teachers care about them. um you know if they just say somewhat no it's not it's not going to help. So that survey is difficult but we also had a change an increase. You can you can see that chart's going up on both sides. It's good. So everything's green for that that quality climate safety survey. So you put all that together and [snorts] that's how we get a yellow rating for the middle the upper elementary um to break into that green they got to be 70 so have a ways to go but I

038think they can do it really do that's the goal keep moving to that green status any questions on the upper >> it breaks it down you can see the % of novice in each area, percent of apprentice and proficient distinctions. Our big focus was novice reduction last year and [snorts] then we continue to have that focus to move the numbers that way because novice kills us. You know, we got to get them out of that. There's we're saying no excuse noviceses because you just you have need to be able to read and answer questions to get out of that novice basically. Do some of these just lack of effort maybe, but at elementary level not so much. I think they all try pretty good. So I think that's a pretty good measure. Um, in college

039I had what's called hot papers. That means I finished [snorts] them on the way to class somehow. >> Um, when I was taking courses with my wife, she'd have to drive and I finished. This is a hot one right here. Uh, I just finished middle school sitting in there right before I walked out. Uh, takes forever because you have to look up all that, get through a lot of data together to do this. But I think it's the view of accountability that we have. So for the um it still has mistakes that's middle school um just three buckets for the middle school um three buckets the social studies and combined writing and science is 47.4 math reading 48.4 and climate safety is 4.2 so strictly academic grade very very academic focus on that middle school.

040So, uh, status 61.5 in reading and math. That's exciting. Just a little bit more they'll be in that high status. So, middle school's getting it done. It's it's exciting. You can see that how they compare. They're they're ahead in reading. They're head of the state. Um, catching up to the state in math. I feel like we'll pass them up. >> Mr. Jury, I know this is kind of a loaded question. How many students we talking there? talking where to move half a point. >> So that is a loaded question. I think if we move four or five students from apprentice to proficient in each each class, I think you you see a level up. If you move 10, we'll be well in the green and you get the biggest move moving moving them out of

041into prince and then the prince fishing. Um yeah, we're not talking a whole lot, but um you know, you want you want to hit every student the best you can for every student. So that was a significant increase of 10.7. You can see the change at the state was a 10.3. So middle school is just they're climbing hard. Um this will be hard, you know, I I'll say this for next year. Um this will be hard to maintain. uh that much change. Uh if we if we stay here or here maintain it's not going to hurt us but if we drop it all look at that that increase of 68.1 in reading it's 11.6 and 54.9 I think we can maintain those. Uh if [clears throat] we don't, it's [snorts] going to be a double

042whammy next year, you know. So, got to work hard to maintain. Our our best testers in the district are in the seventh grade right now. So, they'll be in eighth grade. They'll be taking science, social studies, combined writing next year. They've been our best testers for for a while. So, um I think they're set up to do pretty well next year. So, the status was was medium. The change was increased significantly. The color indicating for math and reading is green. So we're green in the upper elementary and the middle school and reading math. So that's that's pretty exciting. So science, social studies, and combined writing. Again, we're in that that medium range. The green is within reach. It really is. It's, you know, just four or five students each level will be in that green.

043Um the change was we increased significantly again plus 11.6 that's that says a positive culture for learning in the building and the state was just a positive 2.8 and you can see plus 22 in science I do attribute that to a good teacher and we'll continue to see those kind of jumps when we have good teachers. because in middle school they start specializing the subject. So status medium changes blue indicator green once again. Um quality of climate and school safety status was u yellow change was green we stayed green here. So you add all that together and this is the middle school is green right now. So, um 64 was the cut score for that. They're 68.6. I know he's Mr. Dodge really pushed him to get to that that blue level. [snorts] You'd love

044to see that. Great team over there. They're all working hard. Any questions on the the middle school? >> Just in general, are we targeting students for improvement? Specific students so we know Yeah. Yeah. >> Who scored what and we can make sure >> that they're getting all the resources to move forward. >> So, the way we do that is um there's a we we have a data tracking sheet. Uh the middle school does a really good job with this. Jeremy brought this from where he came from, but he has a a Google sheet [cough] with every kid on it. Then he'll have the ready scores. He'll have classroom assessment scores. He'll have the state assessment scores uh in this how she she compiles all this data instruction coach >> and then you know they take

045the ones that are the bottom 20% and they put them they have a special time in the day where they focus on getting better in either reading or math and that I think that's really why we saw a big change in middle school because they they started that last year and what they did is they they looked at all the standards and they went all the way back to second grade and started um looking at the kids how they performed and finding that they missed some things in second and third and fourth grade and they you know they missed it they can't go forward until they go back and retach it in a way that they can grab it and understand. So that's that's what the middle school really focused hard on last year. They're

046doing it again this year. Good news is last year, you know, coming in, they didn't get this really going until January, and they they found that that group of students, they had to go all the way back to the second grade level in math and reading and start from there. This year, we started in September and they came in at third grade level. So, you know, I think continue to see that and they're they're increasing at a faster rate than they did last year. But all that data, even how they do in those classrooms is tracked on that sheet. >> It we see how students are responding to the instruction >> whether they're getting better or not. They're not try something else. >> Yeah. It's kind of it's a practitioner's approach and the high school

047This is Canva by the way. I don't know if any of you use Canva. >> Canva is it? I haven't, but it's good to good to know. >> Yeah, it's a little better than PowerPoint, but takes a while. So, the high school has five buckets postsecary readiness than than the other buckets that we've all seen in graduation. So, five buckets for the high school. What really kind of waters down this keeps this about the same. Reading and math is always has the big accountability. So 50.6 is where we were in reading and math. Uh the cut score was 53. So you know we're we're moving towards that. Uh fully expect to be in that category next year for this status. That'll be our current 10th grade will take that test. Um big change plus 12.9

048uh state was 3.5 but you can see over there that dark blue line shows the jump plus 15.2 in reading and plus 10.5 in math and that's this year's juniors took that test last year really they knocked it out. So again, we want we want to keep going and you can see math really had a good year statewide plus 9.3 math plus. So the status was was low, orange could change significantly high and that gave us a yellow rating on our math and reading at the high school. It's really great not to see orange down here or even red. Couple years ago we saw red [cough] that was very concerning science social studies and combined writing um very concerning cut score was a 32 to get into the low and we are at 33.7. So

049um the the the results we just saw were the 10th graders last year the 10th graders this year will take these assessments. So, I think we'll see big jumps on these coming in this this junior class. I think we'll really um jump these up there. So, um yeah, 22.8 in science. You can see the states is kind of low, too. 37.1. So, the trends, we have the same trend, but we're we're behind the state. We need to catch up and fasten up. Uh we maintained in this area. You can see we had a slight drop, but you could you could drop to 3.5 and still in that maintaining category. Um, so combined writing is concerning. You can see that that's trending down 6.6 over there. So figure that out. And we've talked about high school

050and autis writing takes a lot of effort, takes a lot of stamina. these tests to do right. So we got to figure out how to how to motivate the right one. So in that you know low status maintain low rating for science combined writing and social studies not good not enough e learners to to track that. Um the survey 62.4 that's getting close to 64. So that that's looking good. This, you know, in that one that I gave to you guys, the the PowerPoint, it showed some specific questions and how students did. We have the results of all the questions and how they did. And I tried to pick one of the lowest ones and one of the highest ones to show, you know, put in there to kind of reference what kind of questions.

051So that was a significant increase for the high school plus 5.4. and you can you can see they took a jump with that blue that was that was a new leadership came in last year into the building. So you know that that shows on that. So our status was medium uh in in the climate the survey the changes increased significantly indicators green. So good job there. Uh postsecary readiness 77.8 eight. Not good. You know, we're in this medium. Uh we were over here last year. Um the state is 88.8 that this is red flags right here. >> What does what do you think caused that change, Mr. Jury? >> Um lot of transition over there. It's a big class. I'm not going to make excuses. We just need more opportunities somewhat for for those kiddos

052to get on the track. Um, all they have to do is to hit a benchmark or an ACT or SAT or coyote or um any of those kind of college prep classes. If they take a dual credit class, they're post secondary ready. They get a C or better. uh if they complete a a career pathway and get an industry certification or pass an intercourse assessment, they're career ready, postsecary ready and just get it done. And so um you know just like we track what I was talking about a while ago, we track these students this was the biggest reason when I went to Venture County and saw that career lab and I came back Mr. Arvin, he said, "Let's build one." You know, not used to hearing that. But that this is why because we

053want them to start thinking about their careers before they get to ninth grade. We want to start thinking about it in fifth and sixth and having practical thoughts, not just I want to be a a professional athlete or, you know, I want to be, you know, I did this. decided, you know, I was in the lab and I I sutured up a cut some, you know, a fake arm or, you know, I drew blood or cut some hair, you know, rebuilt an engine, all that kind of stuff. That that'll bring this up because we're getting them focused. Now, what we have to do is everything in that lab, we need to make sure they can finish out when they get to the high school. They need a pathway to finish out. some we're struggling with

054like culinary and law and some things like that. So, we got to figure that out. But that, you know, kind of help the high school out by getting them focus before they come over. So, there's your postsecondary race actually went down 4.3. That gave us a low rating. So, even this is where I say you make a C and get a D. You know, we had medium status. We had a negative change that brought us down to a low rate. Uh graduation rate, we're really good there. Um what helps that is we have multiple services for students that struggle. Um you know, in years past students would just drop out and not complete, but now we have services where life happens, they get responsibilities, they can't do their responsibilities and school. That's that's just the

055situation they're in. So, we offer ways creative scheduling in and ways that they can actually complete their coursework and get their their diplomas now. So, um we feel that's what's best for students is to have a high school diploma as they enter life and try to get a job. without it their options are great a little bit. So that's why we really push to do that to keep that graduation rate high. Um we really have we really struggle with some of them. We have to beg them to you really need to graduate because they'll they'll say no we don't know something else. You can see that's that's trending up and that'll stay trending up. When I was down at the ATC in that welding program, once a student got their 3G or 4G or even

0566G certification, they were done with school. We give them that certification. We never see them again. So, I started holding it until the end of the year before I let them take that that certification test. That kept them in. When I first started, let's get it done and get it done in September. They're gone. So status is blue, change is good, indicator was blue, and graduation rate. So you put all those five buckets together. Um, put them in the the one pot, that puts us in a medium rating, 61.6. Got a long way to go. Get to the the 71, which is high, but it's doable. Very doable. And I think with that that junior group that's going to test this year along with the sophomore group, I think we're going to see good things.

057That postsecary rating is what that's the one that we'll have to watch. You know, it's kind of like March Madness, you know, there's teams going into it and there's a weakness of a team, they're going to exploit it. Now, that's our weakness right there. So, need to get on that. So, Mr. Mr. Jury, >> you was talking about the >> being ready and things the other day when I sent you a thing from that one school here where they got >> where they got the simulators. >> Yeah. >> If we put something like that in, would that count toward >> uh Mr. Arvin and I we we scheduled in a meeting with the associate commissioner of CTE last week was we spent an hour with her and we we proposed a lot of ideas. A

058lot of ideas. >> Can we not file an exemption for that? >> I don't know. There is a district that's doing it and it's it's not >> weird. It's not above board, >> but if we can exempt it, >> I've got that policy written on the board. >> Yeah. >> To to look at doing, but we're going to wait for her to get back. >> Yeah. She's going to follow back up with us in the next couple weeks about what potential roadblocks would be, what are hurdles based on X, Y, and Z, and then either be able to game plan with us ways to figure it out or then we'll know what those regs are that are blocking that and then that's what we will look to write those exemptions for. We ask questions been

059asking >> but under Senate Bill 209 that was the purpose of that I believe >> for these roadblocks and that's why we've been told if we hit a roadblock file it. >> Yeah. >> How many have we filed so far? >> Well, we're trying to figure out all of them. We want to >> lay lay the case out all at once. So, we're letting them walk us through what that's going to be. So, as soon as we get done with that, we'll uh we'll know. And that'll be stuff we'll have to bring back to you guys, too, once once we get to that point, uh to let you know what, you know, it would take from you guys to allow us to be able to do that. But, uh we do have some creative ideas.

060Uh, and you know, kind of like Tony mentioned, she said, "You're one of the first districts that's ever asked us about being able to do it this way." So, um, >> surprising me. >> Yeah. Uh certification issues is one of the biggest things because to to send a kid out with a credential, any credential, industry credential, >> um it's important that they've had instruction under someone in that industry, >> someone that's certified, someone that's has experience in that. Um, I feel like that's very important. If if we're going to give hand a welding certificate to the kid that's done welding, virtual reality welding and we give them that certification and they show up to the job, >> they should be able to weld, >> right? But they can't because they haven't experienced the heat, they

061haven't experienced the positions, they haven't experienced all that stuff. and they haven't experienced a teacher telling them here's what to expect on the job. >> So that's that's where CTE is concerned. That's why they expect a certified teacher. So I love simulators. I think they're great, but I think they also need some some some realness in there with someone that's been on the job that can talk to these kiddos about what to expect, what the dangers are. Um, and so that that's where we're hitting some of the roadblocks. Um, >> Mr. Jerry, if I may, so we have that as simulators network. >> You have to pass those events, then you go to the real thing. So it's not wasting the >> teachers time. So it's forklift training, right? So they're on this or whatever

062and they have to pass so many times before they can go out and get on an actual forklift because if not it just wastes everybody's time if they're gonna >> so it's an entry. >> Correct. So it's Yeah. So >> and >> so it gets them used to it and they're comfortable and they kind of understand their the views. You know what I mean? >> With that designation is entry. >> That's good. >> As long as as long as the next person knows what that certification means. This certification means they passed the simulation of the corporate training, >> but then yeah, they have the the criteria and the credentials and the real but like I said, so keep that in mind. >> I like that. >> But yeah, Mr. Jury, like Amanda said, you're not

063just putting them on there, certifying them, and say, "Here, go get a job." >> Right. >> It's to give them the knowledge of it before the hands on. >> I like that. I like that idea. We just got to work with CTE to say here's the C because they want an industry certification and they look at the ones that exist and that 3G certification in welding that means you can weld. >> 4G 6G means you can weld pipe. They don't make a welding certification that says you can do it on a simulator. >> I wish they did for this. >> Just thank your pilots. They do. >> [laughter] >> pilots flying solo. [laughter] >> But some of those pilot simulations, it's almost real. Crashing doesn't hurt. >> Any other questions? I hope this was fair.

064>> I like this. This is the best one, >> I think. I mean, I think it was very, very good. It was very simplified. It was It was very good. When I get them polished up and done and all the mistakes out, I'll probably post them. >> That'd be great. >> Just like that. It looks nice. >> All right. >> Thank you, Mr. Jury. >> And tell all our staff, excellent job this year. >> Oh, yeah. Get these on real quick. >> Uh, did y'all get review the Yacht County seed dip public review link? >> Any questions, comments, concerns for Mr. Matt Levelville? >> Hearing none, moving on. >> Real quick question. How much it cost to feed a student? >> We figured that out. >> Guess he didn't get the answer. >> Do you

065remember what it was? $367. >> 367. Thank you. No, I'm serious. I didn't get it. >> You're going to have to check the email. >> I do >> like figure out why you why they don't show up. >> Hey, that's something else too real quick. I know I talk afterwards. I shall move to ajourn. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> I. >> Anybody opposed? didn't think. So, >> thank you all. Have a good evening. >> Thank you. >> Now, have a
