An individual speaker who appears at a schoolboard meeting to speak on an agenda item must register prior to the meeting and will be allotted three minutes to speak on the agenda item prior to the school board discussion on that item. I'd like to call to order the May 21st meeting of the Jeff Davis Parish School Board. Would you all stand for the invitation by Miss Summer Lern and the pledge by the Lacasine basketball team. God, we thank you for a good
and productive school year for our students this year. We thank you, God, for the teachers, the staff, and administrators who went above and beyond to pour into our students and our community. We thank you for this Lacasine High School boys basketball team and the coaches and for blessing them God with the talent and the drive to win two state championships. And I pray, Lord, that this board would just continue to seek your guidance and honorably represent our constituents and continue to work in harmony. Bless the graduating class of 2026 and encamp your angels around them, God, as they set out on this next chapter in their lives. And lastly, let this summer break be a time of rest and restoration, God, for our students and educators. so they can return in August ready to produce

Um, we want to welcome the Lacasine basketball team here and u have a little something I wanted to say. I could uh I I typed it up because there's a time limit when you read and sometimes I just keep going. So, but it was very meaningful. You come here or not? I wanted to get it right. Um, so tonight we asked the Lacasine High School boys basketball team to attend
our school board meeting to celebrate their extraordinary accomplishment. A moment that will forever hold a special place in the history of your school and in our parish and in your community. It is my great honor to recognize the Lacasine High School basketball team for winning the class B Louisiana State Championship by beating Zoali in the LHSAA state finals at a score was 58 to 49. Uh that game happened on March 13, 2026. A championship is never won by talent alone. It is earned through countless early mornings and late night practices, lots of sacrifice, discipline all the time, and unwavering commitment to one another. This team demonstrated what can happen when young men believe in each other, work hard, and refuse to quit. To the Lacasine High School basketball team, you represented your school and the
community with pride, determination, and with class. You inspired us not only with your capability and talent, but with your sportsmanship and resilience. You showed us what it means to compete with heart and character. Having character at critical moments in your life will reveal who you are, especially during those challenging situations and even when no one's watching you. You have done that in the way you played and the way you respected yourselves and the way you respected the other teams. In the end, character always wins and you got a lot of it. To the coaching staff, Coach Raspberry, Coach Cassidy, and Coach Miller's not here. Uh want to thank you for your leadership and dedication. Uh, I know there's been countless countless hours and hours just investing in in the the the boys basketball team. Um,
and that's on the court and we already know it's off the court too. You invest time with them. Um, I want to thank you for those sacrifices being away from your family and the dedication it takes to lead young men to this great achievement. Championships are built on vision and preparation, and your leadership helped guide this team of young men to greatness. At this time, our board president, Miss Paulo, and I would like to present you with a parish certificate to show our appreciation for what you have accomplished for your school and our parish. So, when I call out your name, when Miss Miss Ljourne called out your name, you can just come up and then we'll give you the certificate. >> Okay. Luke Bella. >> Congratulations. Thank you. >> Carson Bourgeoa. Saw your boogeois.

Um, we we uh look, we we really do uh appreciate the all the work that y'all did all year. Uh the coaching staff, the school, the principal, students watching that game. Um now, as a superintendent, whenever I watch a game, the score is always important, but I'm looking at a
whole different I'm looking at your character, your sportsmanship, everything I talked about. And I was just really impressed. If you go back and watch that game again, I mean, the way you treated the the the the other players when even when they were hurt, uh, I'm telling you, it was it was just really a a great thing. Um, the way you treated each other, of course, the way you treated the refs, um, just character throughout. And I know that starts at the top and that's the way y'all run y'all's team. So, uh, we look forward next June to have you back. Okay. 017Legislative leazison, Mr. Grave, >> no report. >> Long range planning, Mr. F. >> No report. food service committee this summer. The um summer feeding program is on right now and the registration is open. Um pre-registration closes on May 26th and the program is going to run from June 1st till July 20th. Children from 0 to 18 years old, any children, they don't have to be in public in, you know, anything like that, they are eligible for it. just sign up and then if you can't do pre-registration, the first three pickup dates are going to be um they're going to have on-site registrations and then after that it's closed. >> So, it's a good program for you know question if some kids come in for the summer to stay at their grandparents. >> They can still
get it. Don't matter if they're out of time. >> If if you just had them yesterday, they're eligible for a box of food. >> Well, that's good. They were just born in hand program had it last year. >> Yeah. Yes. Bring in a lot of people. >> Is that on Monday to the kids Mondays? >> That's on Monday. >> Every Monday 7 to 12. >> What's the pickup sites? Did they have they put that out? >> Yeah, they have a different school. Is it not in Hugh? >> I don't know if I have the salts. >> It's um elementary Benton and Lacasine and Welsh. Yeah, Welsh Elementary. Welsh. Welsh High School. >> It's Welsh High School this year, Miss Welsh High School. Lacine High School, Lake Arthur Elementary, Jennings Elementary, Haway High, Fenton Elementary, Elton
High. I just sent y'all the flyer. I texted it to y'all. That's great. >> And as of this morning, we had around people have already registered. >> Oh, wow. >> Okay, moving on. We'll have Miss Amber give us our sales tax report. >> Hey everybody, how are y'all doing tonight? All right. >> Good. Um, okay. So, for this month, we collected for the school board 1.2 million 1,293,000 and some change, which is 86 88,000 over the same time last um last month last year. Um, the school board year to date, we're at 10,71,910, which is $976,000 more than the same time last year. Um, remember we have that big one that um I'm going to offset with the um refund. I have a call tomorrow, so I should find out when we that that's legit
and we can actually start it. So, I'm hoping to start getting that out so it levels out. But don't be too upset the first month of the next year, next fiscal year when it's kind of low because just remember the big numbers. Yeah. >> But, um, >> let's see. Session's almost finished. um we kind of got out not so not so bad. We have a few things changing with the audit um procedures and stuff like that. We're going to have to change how we do our budgets. Um the state central got knocked down. They just got rid of it. So we didn't have to worry until again next year it'll come back. And the four the April 1 um tax did go into effect obviously and this is the first month we're actually getting returns
for it. A lot of people are doing the correct rates, so it's coming through great. There's a few of them that are missing out. So, what we're doing is we're um processing the returns as we get them. We're calling them and emailing them with the information in the correct returns and they're going to get an underpayment letter. So, when they get that, but we're not charging penalties and interest because this is a new thing. So, it's not their fault. It just got missed. So, that's where we're at. Okay. Thank you all to you. >> In new business, I need a motion and a second for consideration of the following. >> We have a motion by Mr. Bordal, second by Mr. Pry. Any board discussion? All in favor say I. >> All opposed. Motion passes. Consider
adopting the following annual motion by Mr. Arseno, second by Miss Summerjourn. Any board discussion? All in favor say I. I. >> All oppose. Motion passes. Consider consideration of declaring the following items as soapless and sending to next available public sales. Warehouse check center. >> So moved. >> Second. >> Motion by Mr. Tran, second by Mr. Walker. Arseno. Any board discussion? All in favor say I. I. >> All opposed. Motion passes. Consideration to approve a local service agreement between Jeff Davis Parish School Board and Jeff Davis Parish Sales and use tax office for the sales tax department to charge a 2.1. >> Motion by Miss Thummer. >> Second by Miss Jones. >> Any board discussion? >> All in favor say I. Oh, >> we're not voting yet. >> Maybe now that's a 2.0 and it needs
to be >> Yes. It was originally sent out as 2% >> 2% and it's supposed to be 2.1. So, we have a motion to amend from 2% to 2.1%. >> Motion second. >> Motion by Miss Summer Lour, second by Mr. Tra. Any board discussion? All in favor say I. >> I. >> All opposed. Motion passes. >> Let's go back to the motion. >> As amended. >> Okay. I need a motion on the original motion as amended. >> Motion. >> Oh, good. >> A motion by Mr. Dobson, second by Miss Mr. Walker. Any board discussion? All in favor say I. I. >> All opposed. Motion passes. >> Good job, Miss Paula. >> Yes. Information. Condolences are extended to the families of Eder Rosie Richards James Ward Elementary who retired in 2002 with 20 years of service.
also to Passy Bro, Welsh Elementary School teacher who retired in 1992 with 25 years of service. The Jeff Davis Parish School Board job fair will be held on Monday, June 8th, 2026 from 8:30 to 11 at Jennings Elementary School. And last, we've covered this, but child nutrition summer feeding program will begin on Monday, June 1st, 2026, and continue every Monday until July 20th of June 26. And I'll turn it over to Mr. Hall for Superintendent's comments. >> Yeah, just a couple of things. U we're going to start um making some some safety upgrades to the front of our building in front. Um, it's going to be a process that's going to take all year long. Uh, but what we want to do is enclose it, move, it's going to be a lot a lot better
for when you come through the front door, you won't have access to the whole building. We're not going to do it as one big project. Our maintenance staff is going to do it. So, we one month might approve a set of doors with some security locks. The next month we might approve something else. Uh, and so what it what it's going to to look like is Miss Leona, uh, who has the middle office who right right there, u, she's going to go in back of where Mr. Oellet is, uh, she's actually Mr. Oellet's secretary, so that'll put them away. And a lot a lot of the work she does is confidential because she's dealing with with employee absences and reasons. And so anyway, it gives her some priv privacy. uh Miss Bernita's desk in front.
That's going to be one big waiting room. We're going to move her desk to where Miss Leona's and then she'll be able to look straight out and buzz people in through the side doors. So, even your side hallways will have security doors and then she'll have a door that puts people coming back so she can buzz. So, uh anyways, we're going to do it just a little bit at a time all year long and uh and we're going to do some fortifications to the front front door access area, too. Um so one other one other last thing uh we're do our board docs and like our board agenda we don't have um it it's it's not done through actually the company called there's a company called board docs and there's a company called sim and
there's a lot of different ones you can use. We don't have any of that. Uh we just have Miss Debbie that makes it. Um there's an ADA requirement that we're going to have to meet. So, uh the the uh uh schoolboard association has a partnership with Assembly and and so school boards across the state are slowly starting to switch over to assembly. And what that does is is it it it first of all when when the board agenda is posted, anybody can read it in any different language. So, it allows that which is what we have to do to meet the law. But it also creates a a version of that that you can search very easily in the past and also our PDF files from the past they can download turn it into a
document that can be searched and then log it. So we can we can go back and search that. Um now what I would like to see and this will definitely be up to the board but uh once we get to maybe January we think we can kind of aiming for January 1. We we have the ability to have a laptop in front of you and when it's time to vote, you just push yes or just push no. >> That would simplify, you know, going and not going through that process of the yays and the nays and and uh and so anyways, we we're we're still learning it. Well, not we. Miss Debbie is still she goes she's taking classes and we and they're they're real good working with us on on it. So, it it's
going to it's still many many months out as we learn, but it it actually will bring us into the >> the next the next century, so they call it, you know, >> and we'll get back up to date on on what everybody else is doing. And uh so anyways, we'll uh >> we'll we'll let you know as as that goes. Uh um one of the things that we had voted on, I just want to quickly uh talk about this u our emergency the way we we send out calls. So, two years ago, we were using J Campus very slow. Uh, a couple of times when we canceled school that day, let's say if it was 5:30, it take it would take a couple hours for it to get out. Well, that's no good. So, we
left J Campus and we went to a company last year that uh several surrounding parishes had went to uh unfortunately the owner of the company had passed away. When he passed away, the company dissolved. So, um anyway, so now we're we're going with with another company. It's called class dojo. That word, you may have heard it tonight. Uh but class dojo is something we already use. The teachers already use it in their classrooms. And uh and so we're going to continue to have that ability to send it's probably close to 10 Miss Lord 10. How many phone calls? Like isn't it like >> uh it's going to be SMS text message that'll go out to everyone? Emergencies override everything. So they'll get it within two to three minutes. >> Wow. >> How many? Isn't it
like just >> like 5,000 per so many seconds? >> Yeah. And so I think we have on record we have almost 10,000 phone numbers in their record that it calls out. So it's going to be done quickly. >> So uh that and that's good for our stakeholders because they're not sitting around waiting. Oh, you got a text or you got I didn't get that and and so it'll go out real quick. So happy about that. Last thing, uh Mr. Skip Brussard donated about 2,000 books. Uh and these are from the state. One of them is for elementary grades. U one of them is a color book uh from the state Louisiana with different you know things from the state. The other one is uh going to be like in our fourth and fifth grade. It's
more of a uh lessons about Louisiana and the culture and the history. So anyways, I just want to give him a shout out. We got these cases like 2000 I want to say books. We're going to hand that out to all the schools in the fall. So just want to tell them thanks. That's it. Mr. Right. I need a motion and a second to adjurnn. Motion by Miss Summer, second by Mr. Dobson. [laughter] >> He raises. >> He wants to stay. I know. >> No. >> Any board discussion? All in favor say I. >> All opposed. Motion >> passes. You are dismissed. >> Thank you, Mr. Guys. Y'all y'all have a good long weekend. >> Thank you. Have a good safe weekend now. A little bit >> nap time everybody. I got we got two
pans of this stuff.
