systems and some security gaps that we've identified and some concerns that that that we've kind of come across. Um, specifically gaps that possibly could leave children at scholars uh exposed to predatory behavior or or harmful content online. A couple of just brief examples um one being Google AI chat. While the specific AI chat has been blocked for um quite some time, there was sort of a a backd dooror through Google chat, I mean for Google search AI mode that um that has been uh enabled until just this spring. Um which is effectively just a backdoor route to the same product. Um not only that, but the ability to read for parents to read the history of these chat conversations with AI um was was turned off. Um just want to make a note that um

you know we all know that interaction between children and AI chat has been a a topic of national conversation. There've been a lot of AI um related lawsuits about how chat bots have caused students to um developmental health problems have directed them to self harm or to other harmful behaviors. Uh the NC Department of Public Instruction has guidelines about use of AI tools which range from complete block to a highly monitored usage and I feel like ours wasn't monitored. Fortunately, since then that avenue has been blocked. Uh a second would be sort of what they sometimes call the hidden social network within Google Suite. Um I believe that there is still the ability for students to share documents with outside um accounts which can uh allow for sort of an unmonitored um conversation between uh

students and outside individuals. Also some online games where there's unregulated chat with a general random public. Um these are just some examples. Um so my question is not about these specific examples but just about the um you know the uh existence of these gaps in our um in our security uh technology. Um and just I wanted to make a comment number one to parents that I would recommend everyone should look at your children's Chromebook history and and see what sites they've been um accessing and and have that a point of of conversation within your family. Uh, number two, I think that Scholars Academy needs to look into hiring a dedicated professional for this because um, uh, we lag behind, for example, CMS and how that how we're keeping up to date on, uh, some of

the latest, uh, threats out there. And I feel like we've been lagging behind. Um, and number three, developing a reporting threshold for when incidents do occur. Um, you know, I I haven't been aware of what thresholds exist, but if there's not one, I would suggest um developing one and sharing that with the community. >> Thank you, Brad Mitchell, for your community comments. I will um say that I also encourage parents to always review par um student activity on their their children's activity on Chromebooks and on personal devices. When it comes to the school Chromebooks, you also can review their activity by logging into your GoG Guardian account. If you have any questions on how to use the GoG Guardian account, you can reach out to the administration. Um, thank you for your comments. If there

are no other community comments, uh, we'll move on with our agenda. I don't see any other hands up, so we will move on with our agenda. We have one item is death and governance regarding legal matters to be discussed and closed. Um we have no other agenda item. Um as a result uh we will enter our second opportunity for community comments. Um Brad Mitchell, I just want to make sure um your hand is up from the previous uh instance of community comments, but if you'd like to speak more technically, you have another three minutes. >> Well, uh I guess I could um mention that I did have some specific questions and even though you said you're not going to uh respond, maybe it could be a topic for for the board to consider. Um so

just my question would be number one what is the standard of practice regarding technology safety in the school system? Um is there a standard an external standard that we are following? Um uh is it related to the CMS standard? Is it related to the North Carolina um you know uh statutory standards or or public instruction guidelines? And then number two, is there a reporting threshold? because I think it helps everyone in the community if we know, you know, what failures have occurred, not to point blame, but just to be aware of them so that we can um, you know, engage in our own uh forms of monitoring and conversation with our with our own students. And I know that this could be an additional expense. Um but but I do think that this is an

area where expertise beyond um you know just what those of us in the community can offer is going to be important to stay ahead of the curve which is obviously impossible but to stay as far ahead as we can. Um so that's that that rounds it out. I'll I'll lower my hand now. Thank you. Thank you. >> Thank you Mr. Mitchell. >> All right. I will entertain a motion to enter into close. >> So moved. >> I second. >> Any second? >> All right. Thank you, Liliana. Um all those in favor entering in a close, please uh say I >> I. >> All uh those who oppose entering close, please say nay. >> All right. All right, the eyes have it. We will enter in close and return uh from close um as necessary uh

to to end tonight's meeting later tonight. Thank you very much. how far we have seven and eight. I'm not sure if u Malik will be able to join. And then uh Danny a second. >> Great. All those in favor uh please say I. >> I'm sorry. Dominic. >> Dominic. >> Oh, I can't hear you. Can you hear me? Yes. >> Yes. >> What happened then? >> Hang on.

I didn't change anything. >> Can you hear other people, Dominique? >> We'll take that as a no. >> Are you guys speaking now? >> Yes. >> Yeah. Yes. >> No, I can't hear you. Hold on. >> Can you guys hear me? >> Yeah. >> No, I don't know what's going on with mine. Hold on, please. Come back in. I'll be right back. So, I can't hear you now. Oh, wait. I heard you now. >> You're here? >> Yes. Okay, great. Thank you. Y >> it's just so that we we'll restart that voting process. >> I'll uh Don, do you want me to read the stated or did you want to state it? >> Um >> I can entertain a motion to accept the ED's recommendations noted in closed session. >> So moved. Okay. Second. >>

Thank you, Dominique. Thank you, Allison. All those in um favor of adopting the ED's recommendation and close say I. >> I. >> And I. >> All those who do not approve the ED's recommendations say nay. The eyes have it uh unanimously. The executive director's recommendations have been approved. I'll entertain a motion to end tonight's professional board meeting. >> So moved. >> Second. >> Thank you. I think that was >> um all those in favor ending tonight's uh session, please say I. I. All those who do not want to end tonight's session, please say nay. >> Put it like that. Like if you guys want to keep hanging out has ended. Thank you for your time.
