School District's regular Action meeting on August 22nd 2022 the time is now 6 30 PM the New Jersey open meeting law was enacted to ensure the right of the public to have advanced notices and to attend the meetings of public bodies of which any business affecting their interests is discussed or agreed upon in accordance with the provision of the fact the Matawan Aberdeen Regional School District Board of Education advertises me on August 11 2022 in the Asbury Park Press and the star budget this news is also was sent to the municipal Clerks of the borough of Matawan and the township of Aberdeen and the Babylon Aberdeen Public Library the notice is also placed on the district's website it will please answer the pledge please foreign [Music] foreign yes so yes can I get a motion
in a second to improve the correspondence to the board one motion a second okay and with that I'm gonna turn it over to Dr Micah for the superintendent's report um just wanted to say a couple of quick things to be presenting his curriculum tonight um board members we will have a chance to ask questions or comment during the presentation at the end of each section and then we are going to open it up to public comment and questions um at the end of the presentation um yes good evening everyone as Mr Soul he said we're going to go through the PowerPoint real great to get questions from the board on the head at the end we'll open it up to the floor for everyone um or anyone here we'd like to ask questions feel free
to come up to the podium and pass away so um just by way of background uh we released this PowerPoint on Thursday um for transparency purposes and we're going to discuss tonight um Mr Lincoln our director of personnel is going to help me out today um and we're going to be discussing uh the differences between standards curriculum so everybody has an understanding as to where we're going uh down the road um I want to just take a second to thank our staff and our Administration for the time and effort that went in over this summer as they wrote the curriculum and got us ready for tonight so without further Ado I'm going to get started our mission statement which was Rewritten over the summer uh with some people in this room right now and our
board a community effort through our strategic planning process we had when I first got here eight years ago now uh we had one we went through a strategic planning process we could find their uh plan that once we finished we had started a new one however Kobe hit so we had to postpone it about a year and over the course of the last year and into the early part of the summer through the diligent efforts of our complete Community we were able to finish it up to start the meteor and our mission statement for us learning a safe and Equitable learning environment that celebrates our diverse Learners provides the necessary resources and supports to prioritize the social emotional and academic development of all students and that is our mission statement which we will be following
for the next five years so I want to talk about intent quickly on the right what we see is that New Jersey doe vision and understand that when Michael starts talking about standards those standards are different than the curriculum those are standards that are issued by the doe through legislation so it is law we cannot alter a standard we're going to be going back and forth so I'm just going to say try to stay connected here I have ADHD so if I start to correct just push me back um so um the standards that we see tonight um we cannot change the purpose it's illegal for us to do that however when we form our curriculum we are going from what our community has spoken to us about so I just want everybody to understand
that as we go through the slide presentation so at New Jersey Division we took and put into our own language so today's students are faced with continuous stressors that may impact not only learning but also but also their physical mental and social emotional development of these stressors the NK doe revise the Learning Centers to address the need for students to gain knowledge awareness and skills in caring for themselves interacting with others and analyzing the impact of their choices and consequences they have on themselves and others now there's a link at the bottom to the Department of that and you all have this at home this is going to be posted up on the website tomorrow you can hit everything on here however when you hit on this link please understand that those are the doe
standards they are not what we're using so when I when we make reference to things we won't be doing we won't be doing it but for complete transparency I want everyone to be able to go to those sources where they originate from so our goals for tonight are to provide Clarity on the lgbtq admissibility Mandate what that means increasing inclusion and equity critical reasoning will not be taught and I've had many conversations with people over the months and when I explained and that is not what we are doing I still get phone calls what I'm telling you is we are not teaching critical race theory if anybody has questions you can call me I answer the phone I return phone calls so please if you have any questions even after you ask them tonight or
tomorrow anytime please call me so we can talk through it because I don't want anyone to move forward without an understanding of exactly what what we're about um share the rollout of the health and PE standards increase knowledge of updated standards where are the changes because believe it or not a lot of this has been being taught for forever and they made specific changes that Michael's going to speak about so you can be fully aware of where those changes are we are going to talk about our opt-out process um and we're going to share how we are going to address the mandates thank you good evening everyone so we're going to begin first with diversity and inclusion so this is not new this is all about the past couple of years ago back in 2019
yesterday presentation for the board and that presentation included notable people in history and current times that fall into the categories of these protecting classes LGBT people with disabilities so the purpose of this is to support our mission of Dei in the district so that we teach lessons to students we hit on the topics that include diversity inclusion throughout the particular lessons and we're taking closer look in just a moment what that will look like on this slide look at the bottom like Dr Michael said on the previous slide there's a link and the link says eei grades 6 through 12. that's a matter one presentation so that we've done previously we encourage you to click on that link when you have a presentation and you can really see the details of what DDI is going
to look like in lessons for students in middle school high school so closer look so what's that we're taking to connect and strengthen Dei in the district because we're doing for the first one we're going to talk about and more detail in a moment we're implementing a new health standards when we get into the details of how Sanders you'll see the connection from the house standards that in a moment there are cross-curricular lessons in language arts and social studies where language article may be reading a short story about someone who has instilled and that in social studies maybe writing about that so that's what we're designing my teachers and provided by teachers with this particular theme in mind and of course the speakers finally which ties into mission statement that we just talked about a
few moments ago when we went throughout the entire strategic planning process and we hit on a five main goals for the district for the next few years of degi continued to present itself so that's one of our goals is to look at you guys through the district committee school-based committees and how do we need feedback and all different parts of our school district including Personnel Staffing curriculum and instruction and finally professional development all of our staff goes through professional development on a variety of topics sometimes it is specifically and sometimes the guys infused within the professional development itself and in that case of that a lot of the questions that I was getting uh via email and phone calls um please understand we are not doing how to's Okay um people people that have been
asking me um you can't do how to but you can go where you want to if that that's not what this is about please understand that um nowhere in any of our curriculum are we discussing how to's in any way shape or form okay so now Comprehensive Health curriculum so it starts first with our board Palace so back in January of this year our board has been very proactive knowing that this was coming down the road we're talking about curriculum at some point the board took a lot of time and a lot of effort to edit and revise policy 2422. so that particular policy is our Comprehensive Health and PE house within that there's some important features and it talks about what the curriculum is going to look like the structure and what we're going
to talk about this evening which would be the option portion so if you look at 2423 you see how it's underlying to length you can click on the link and you can read the policy for yourself it's also posted on our district website under the Board of Ed tab under policies so some important takeaways first the district has not has not adopted any of the resources off of the njdoe website so then if you go onto the website and look at the resources of the POV provides let's put that out there for everyone but as a district in the community we're not using those resources that includes amazing.org and the videos that are associated with the mates not just so I also got a lot of questions on a maze a maze has been we've
gone through every piece of material that we had however and we have created firewall specifically for Amaze however that does not mean someone can go on a computer or get on a maze please understand that so if you see that happening as we go through you're going to need to let us know so we can address it because I have we had third and fourth graders I can break through firewalls so I'm saying if it pops up somewhere it is not because Jay left here tonight and put it back in some places that is not what has happened so please understand that um and if you if there is something that pops up you're going to need to communicate with us so we can address it the next takeaway students will be exposed to content
at the end of their grade so the way the curriculum is written is a little bit different than the way it's pushed out from the doe so the department of Ed says you can teach through a great span meaning from kindergarten through second grade you could learn these particular items we have taken that a step further we're not teaching a great span we're saying at the end of a particular grade so you'll see that in a moment I'll talk more about it so some of the standards are going to pop up some districts may want to teach them in kindergarten or first grade you're not we're determined at the end of second period and the fifth grade the end of eighth grade the end of the 12th grade and there can be several different times
would that take away parents will have the opportunities to opt out but it's a policy we're going to walk you through in just a moment what are the procedures what that would look like please keep in mind that as Educators we don't promote often end we have how they qualified certificated teachers who we trust to teach content and they do a great job at it we would prefer that students learn the content that we want them to learn however I already have a son and so we're going to walk you through in just a moment what that's going to look like so a couple takeaways from this just try to follow up on policies to talk about what it was adopted how can PE teachers this is important to realize that who are our curriculum
writers it sounds sad so for help curriculum it's our health and PE teachers who are the ones who have been trained who continue on professional development they are the writers of the curriculum it's not someone from another District it's not a third party it's our own set I'm a program instruction material have been approved including the great body shop so the British Body Shop is for K-5 it's all in the agenda it's like to be reapproved this is the resource we've used for many years there's research-based appropriate you're going to on-site agenda that's an important resource that we use and is available foreign [Music] when I started the um from the beginning when I say we release everything on Thursday to be transparent um that is a little bit putting me Clark before the horse
so to speak so I did get a few calls about Rubicon Atlas on in Rubicon Atlas you will see that they list the standards remember we can't change the purpose of the standards if we go all the way down to the bottom of each one you'll see the resources we're using it's all it's all right there but like I said just to reiterate we cannot change the wording of a standard and for those of you when you meet tonight if you want to take a step further those things are done at the legislative level so that's a call to your legislators and asking them why um so that's what I'm saying so the opt-out process so if the parent you will be notified by the principal I'm going to show you an example letter in
a second that's going to go out the first week of school now mind you no Health topics are being taught I think for the second semester so at least till the second semester so don't think you got to get in there the first day of school we had to work with someone to be fine um so there will be a letter that goes on from the principal parents must in response to that letter going home parents have to respond with this letter because it's per board policy stating that they intend to opt out opt out of whichever particular standards you want to opt out of and I'm going to go through an example tonight of an alternative assignment that will will be discussing so you'll understand that opt out there will be um there will
be an alternative place for the students to be when that is being taught in the class and please remember this is such a small piece to all of our curriculum we're not talking about something that is going to be a weekly basis thing so please understand that as well so this is a sample opt-out letter that will be used across the district so this will be the lateral on the link tomorrow when you open up the PowerPoint the principle with Will insert the topics the units in the class and then you will have you ability to know what's coming when it's coming and then if you choose to opt out your response would be to this letter in another in a letter from you it can be an email it doesn't have to be an
official you know letter on an email will suffice foreign I was wondering about if uh like let's say somebody sees topics on the letter like a parent and they're not sure if they really they're just not sure whether they want to opt out of how would they actually see the curriculums wrong word the materials itself the worksheets the whatever it is our kids are actually going to interact with [Music] so essentially they could do that before they decide whether or not to send the email or the letter to opt out I absolutely am and Mike and further if um you're making calls and nobody's getting back to you and you call me um and I'll expedite whatever it needs to be expedited okay so now more information so take a look at our 13 disciplinary
Concepts before ideas and this is for the healthy curriculum some of the ones that are in red irect we've been teaching them for a long time things like Physical Fitness and Nutrition probably going down when you were in school we continue to teach those the three that are starred that are in bold and black those are the ones that want to speak to this evening this is not for the changes are so it's personal growth and development pregnancy inhabit a social and sexual health and those three run through each of the three lines to that end those things are also being taught but they came out of a different place in the overall curriculum not to the extent that the deal we want some things to be done but we learned about pregnancy in middle
school we learned about these things where this part is nothing new it's it's what we're going to be talking about tonight yes absolutely um [Music] some some of it well that's not being introduced at an earlier grade but I think we're talking about some of the things that were coming up that I got emails about masturbation um anal sex things like that um that I think um we're going to address tonight um but I think that's I think that's where the doe you know where we're seeing some differences yes yet all right so um when we when we specifically start we're going to start with second grade um prevention is a big piece um when you run a program um child assault prevention um that we've been running for forever so some of the things
when we talk about second grade um specifically have to do with child assault and we'll put it into perspective when we get going to get to that point but educating on people about the needs of their sexual anatomy at an early age normalizes talking about their bodies and reduces the risk for sexual abuse which we're going to discuss momentarily right so quick question on how to read what's up on the screen so to take a look at the first standard it says 2.1.2 ped 0.1 so let me just break it down so we're looking at this at home you have a better understanding of what it is that you're looking at there's a lot of Education Garden so the first 2.1 so 2.1 signifies what the particular concept is 2.1 is for health and PE
we highlighted for red the second two in the strength means grade level so as it goes throughout you'll see that that red shoe will change to a red five and then a red eight and a red 12. if you go out to Rubicon and look at curriculum in all other content areas it's going to be set up pretty much the same way math would have a certain numbers anything numbers music Fine Arts and it would change my grade levels so the red two means great button pgb means personal growth and development that's the core concept and you'll see that those abbreviations follow throughout and then finally point one that is an identifier of the concept so you can see those sequentially through the first one is one the second one is two third one is
three and so forth okay so that's what that means followed by the strings of numbers and letters is what the curriculum standard is in words so for example the first one which we're going to take a closer look at in a moment explore how activity helps all human bodies to stay healthy okay so from the Department of Ed that is what was established and shared with districts now to take a look to the right where it says lesson expectations that is the matter on interpretation of this particular group of Standards so in this case the lesson expectation written by our staff reads individuals who direct different activities and grow at different rates personal hygiene self-help skills promote healthy habits so that's our interpretation of the sales okay so we can do this a few times
throughout the presentation we're taking a closer look at one of the standards so we're not going to go through every standard because you see a lot of them are grouped together and fit together with their themes but here's the first example so to point one point this is number five in the list lists medically accurate name for body parts including the genomics so the perfect so why are we doing this why are we teaching this to our students stop the bike that I just talked about it on the previous slide it's about prevention so Child Abuse Prevention and research does show that sex offenders choose to avoid youth who know proper terminology so this is about student safety that's the reason why we're teaching this so I had received some emails and I'm going to
tell you the words uh I had received emails because when we looked at the standards if you look at the standards you can see they go in Pretty in that's not what we're doing um the the words we're talking about in second grade are buttocks vagina penis and breasts because if a child is assaulted and is using made up fictional names for things it this is all we are doing if that's the extent of it um because it is for child assault prevention and studies show got to be Suited and and I I hate to even talk about these things because it makes me uh Angry when we talk about assault at any time however Studies have shown and research has shown that a a predator will not will avoid a child that can identify
those parts um that's so that is the thought behind our understanding of this it is not to go into the detail that the standard would show so that was my point before about the Sanders can't change we can't change the standards legally however we can interpret like we did last what that standard means to us and that is how we are functioning okay here's an example so let's talk here's an example of what you're asking for so we identified the curriculum standards are we talked about resources which I'm going to repeat in just a moment then you want to know what is it that the teacher is going to be teaching to my trials this is an example this is an example of a lesson plan and so this one you can see a little
bit more on the left hand side which says explain ask Sony ask are those the words the teachers would be saying to the students foreign you'll have this I know your summer trying to read before anything's going to go on the website in the morning like I said we're not this is 100 Trans characters nothing not pulling anything out of my back pocket when I go home tonight that's that's not we're here for our children at the end of the day and that is what we are charged with billion that is what we're talking about Mr living would it be helpful if we've read it with for the people that can't see that um the next one actually is going to pause big touch it's not a particular thing what you want us to say
amongst students on this particular standard this particular topic okay you can see that third paragraph the third explain it talks about family Parks under the bathing suit or underwear okay so we're identifying private parts by underwear so we'll create that image could we look at the next one this is the same type of opportunity same resource it gives the teacher a different option where they would then be speaking specifically about the genitals doing the same type of lesson say touch hurtful touch but becoming more specific again the purpose is for students safety great however we already discussed there isn't opt out so if you wanted to opt out at that standard it would pop up on that letter and that would be the standard you would not out every single question any board members at
this point there you go when they respond when they when you send your letter back they won't have to get specific because the letter from the principal will have all the standards on them so you just choose so choose yes yes okay okay so the next strain is saying there's this pregnancy apparently so then you can see what the standards are so again Dr Martin I mentioned this previously this is not a how-to for pregnancy impact in the second grade if you look at the interpretation by the district by yourself on their lesson expectations this is what a second grader would be warning for these sandals and I'll read this link all living things may have the capacity to reproduce compare and contrast the needs and life cycle of plants to the needs of life
cycle of animals for example so at second grade that's what we're talking about under this particular crochet discussing prevention a couple of times tonight um you'll see it throughout the presentation it's extremely important educating young people about the different numbers I educating people about the diversity of sexual orientation generate entities that expression and creating an inclusive School climate reduces depression suicidal ideations and intense lowers and and attacks lowers alcohol marijuana consumption and will reduce these absences across all identities thank you okay so the next track of Standards these social and Sexual Health getting still in second grade keep in mind it's a little misleading where it says social and Sexual Health um ethically social health in second grade you're going to see it to go through this it's primarily social and second grade and for
the being part of fifth grade is social then in fifth grade we start to move a little more into the sexual Hub component and then obviously E3 and 12 3 would be war on the sexual Hub and a little bit less on the social piece people are asking me why can't we just because it's illegal to do that and then I don't think anybody's going to do it however some of the consequences for that would be things like losing climbing and things like that so um just like I said standards are the standards we can't change them at all to look at one and two other social and Sexual Health a poor idea would be every individual has a unique set of skills qualities which include the activities that enjoy how to address the mannerisms
things that do the purpose would be for all individuals to feel welcomed and included so the standards are asking us to instruct kids on how people Express their gender how gender role cellular types limited Behavior so this is an example of this would be um all boys will be police officers and all girls who all grow up to be nurses we know that that's not true so in a particular standard we need to address that so try to break down the gender role of stereotypes and have the sessions of kids at that particular level at this point in second grade that's it that's the same thing right five six seven eight nine especially going through this particular category the lesson expectations for this particular group these groups of Standards can go together so that teachers
instructed number five is not a full button on one day six is not a full lesson another day they're all grouped together just one particular lesson but actually hit on several standards at one particular time and so if the teacher is teaching these standards is what they're talking about the relationships communication that the bank is strengthening those relationships and then talking about conflicts between people and how relationships can solve the conflicts that's what's happening at this particular piece so again this is more social than it is sample lesson so if you take a look at this lesson example this works for previous standards in this particular one if you look at the the third one where it says ask and the public use out loud so you can hear it in this lesson the teacher
would say to this can boys and girls like the same things or acting similar ways and then they have a discussion with the students responses and that they would build off of receiving responses for the lesson and then the third paragraph the third explains it starts to do some particular examples about what our expectations is my opinion how we are influenced uh what what we think they're all deal with white girls the same lessons at home you'll continue to read through the retire that we can see how the lesson builds some extent so nice for even you had a question I actually had a couple first I just wanted to thank you Dr Micah for inviting each member I believe of the board to meet with you individually to get our input it's my understanding
from what I've been able to ascertain that for the most part I believe every board member has not had any major objections but you took any suggestions that each one of us had and I just want to say that I genuinely appreciate you always having included board in any of your decisions and thoughts um so I just wanted to address part of um my feeling towards the curriculum in general in regards to safety for those of you who don't know a criminal defense attorney uh this doesn't just create the ability for children to know their body parts but it creates a very safe path for kids to report abuse and that is a major major consideration for every parent so I'm very happy to see that that's something that we are adopting we are not
shying away from uh in terms of the Dei curriculum this will expand not just to lgbtq and disability but also go to different cultures backgrounds and so forth absolutely yes and um I went back through some of the agendas since I've been on the board the great body shop I think that's a book my daughter views who just graduated I think we've had it in the district since 2015-ish well that's the last time it's we've renewed when I went back it's been in use at least since 2008. I'm probably in one way shape or form so if any of you have gone through the system here um yeah uh and I just wanted to be clear the board policy was also something that was mandated that we pass a foreign policy and I guess that
would be directed towards our attorney it's not the word policy that parents have to opt out that's actually how the law is written is that correct sorry um and then in slide 12 specifically activities that we would go over with kids would be something like showering is is important it keeps your vagina clean wiping properly things like that now it'd be hygiene and showering in general is that great yeah uh and slide 15 when we talk about good touches that's more in the context of who's allowed to touch like Physicians parents yes it's it's the way I look at it you know you come home from school and your your mom or dad or brother give you a hug as opposed to the stranger walking down the street come here I want to give you
a hug like good and bad yeah those those types of things okay I just wanted to be very clear so that things weren't misunderstood or misconstrued uh and then my last question would be what is the for the new curriculum if whether your kid is opted out or not opted out are there any possibility of Parental supplements so that the conversations can continue at home uh absolutely I mean I I think as with anything else these are living breathing things and um if we have to make adjustments on the Fly absolutely yes and then the last thing I guess I just wanted to also note is I did a little research when the policy came up as to what some of the legislative intent was and a lot of this as I think was addressed
in slide 18 was really uh trying to address the amount of teen suicide in the lgbtq community as well as to address issues where we got hit from the Tyler Clemente suicide that happened at Rutgers because he was afraid of being outed as homosexual I think that these are important changes and I think it's important that the public know where at least I stand I think that's an ass and I appreciate that Dr Michael here and their staff has taken those in the consideration of creativeness thank you um just to clarify legislative intent if you were to go to the specific verbage of the legislation that promulgated the standards you would be able to go in the history of that and see any comments that were made by the legislator making voting on those laws
so you would be able to see what the intent was behind the standards does everybody get that anyone else on the board um um I I too also wanted to thank you guys um because this has been going on for so long and I appreciate and I had wrote this in my questions earlier um the time you guys took out to do this and inviting us in to sit you know I want to make sure the public and their chances it's not the first time we saw this we've been working on this for a long time and even though we still have questions sometimes we ask questions that we've already asked just to have that question out there um so again thank you for for getting us so involved in the community um I did
want to mention one thing that I think you had mentioned to me when I came to meet and go over this was Amaze is also found through YouTube so YouTube is something that the kids actually can get on and then through that is where they could actually access amazing yes so um you know so part of this so if you if you ever curled everybody as a Chromebook we have a firewall and a Chromebook If the child is at home to stop it however they don't always just use it a Chromebook right you know I'm just I have three children of my own um and I can tell you right now they just weren't using a Chromebook right because at any conversations with them and of course they're all they're older and out of school
like the same kind of this is you know this you know this saying it takes a village to raise you know um if this is a conservative effort by everyone and as I said before I I know I'll get a call if it pops up somewhere so if I do it's going to be addressed to me yes um thank you no I just thought it was interesting because you know the kids you know so much more than we do um and and there's so many different ways to access it and YouTube is something that has a lot of good stuff on it so the kids could be on YouTube but obviously they have to be watched what they're getting on so I just thought that was good now um that's all I have for right
now but thank you again well anyone else on the board all right um so as Mr Robinson had said similar to the policy we really did try to take our time and tell her this we didn't just adopt um what the state was telling us because quite frankly myself as a parent even though my kids were a little older I did have concerns with as the Learning Centers as they existed but then as soon as they said we could tailor it for our district pulled back where we thought we needed to because quite frankly even though my kids are older I did have concerns second graders seven years old how much can they comprehend and therefore they can't fully comprehend things wise being taught so I was happy with the direction where we landed we're
not going into depth we're doing it from a prevention and safety standpoint in terms of what we're covering but to go beyond that at seven years old I just think it's too much in the Learning Center so I guess for me a wish as a board member and a parent is from a state perspective um higher up levels um it would be nice to really consider the age of the children and what they can really can so I think we did a good job tackling if I could just walk before we move on to fifth grade just reiterate again the prevention piece I've been an administrator for 16 years and it pains me to tell you how many assaults I sexual assaults I've had to be involved with it it makes you cry so when
I'm talking about trying to prevent something that's what we're talking about nothing more than that because um it's it you know it is it's a huge problem and uh it's it's sad it's sickening all of those things that's why I'm saying prevention a lot of time so a majority of the changes were pushed down to the second grade so we spent a little bit more time on second grade looking at examples written down the standards we spent time in writing the curriculum set time on professional development we said time this this evening looking closer at second grade curriculum and we're going to pick up the piece a little bit while the information is still going to be there we'll still have some samples we're going to move a little bit faster because some of the
things we're talking about tonight have been in fifth grade eighth grade and 12th grade we'll highlight some of the changes but for the most part they've been here so looking at particular Sanders numbers one two three interpersonal growth and development this is about puberty specifically it's the science behind puberty and body systems when we're done continue on puberty but this is now the social emotional changes that our bodies over through people hi Elizabeth development in the role of hormones so we'll see that what's the purpose to normalize changes during puberty so we're having the discussions with students in class so we're hitting on the concept of the body system the social piece the emotional peace start to normalize this they can have a better understanding of the changes that are either going through or about
to go through the topic again Administration is not a required topic it will not be taught that was something that started floating around in the atmosphere amongst the community so we really want to make it perfectly clear teaching and what we're not that goes to my how-to comments before that's not what this is about so let's have a lesson before you take a look at me this is a sample lesson on puberty that is not a have to but it builds on previous lessons from early degrees and it talks a little bit about what the students are going through in terms of changes in the body so okay if you love discussions people let activities thank you this is just the same lessons just continue and when you look at the lessons again the focus
is on prevention okay so the next fifth grade standard is the pregnancy parenting we'll take a look at the first one so this is number one explain the relationship between sexual intercourse and human reproduction so this is the talk right we our health feature addresses sex ed and this particular sander in this lesson the expectation pregnancy can achieve the variety of methods so this is we're at a point in the end of the three heading to pay three we're addressing this is stereotypes in second grade and their impacts on something others and then number two differentiate between sexual orientation and gender identity this is more about defining the terms and using them correctly so when we're having conversations or super hearing terms they know what it means that that's it just creating a baseline of
vocabulary about social Sexual Health again the lesson expectations family members have impact on the achievement on development of their children physically socially emotionally people in healthy relationships share thoughts and feelings as well as mutual respect the underlying theme of these particular standards is we're all accepted we're all welcome and we respects everyone teach in terms of welcoming students how do we teach respects how do we teach those relationships and build relationships at the same election okay let's continue I just again I see everybody squinting um at one point so this is the the presentation basically like the presentation we already all got that was linked in Dr Michael's letter but with these additional the actual examples of the lessons when will that be available to everybody okay and we're going to start pushing everything out
but this is Powerpoint will be on the website at I came to work at six so okay it'll be on mrsd.org in your board section I will put it as a back you know when you put it on and there's an important announcement I'll do it like that okay thank you and the reason the reason why we're introducing these examples now and not in the um not in the letter that went on Thursday because um if we couldn't I remember I told you we put the card before that works on Thursday by releasing all of this if the examples went out it would have been 85 100 emails and it would have all been taken out of context I want everyone to leave here tonight within a context of where we're coming from and then
conversations can continue okay so in looking at slide 33 um would it also be teaching like I think it was slide 32 taking boundaries um when to because you know from having kids although they're not fifth grade anymore that's when kids start to get girlfriends and boyfriends and little things like that so we're teaching that's that's what that's where the the use of this is going so we've been talking about prevention all night and and to continue that yes that's that's exactly correct and um I guess this is more for Mr leidman uh since he's our kind of our hip guy here do you think that those standards would help reduce some of the issues that you see in the boy Road yes absolutely because we talked about some of our cases at Bowie Road
and fourth and fifth grade this standard meeting address is worked on in fifth grade will not only help at Willy's Road passing the transition from employee Road Memphis tires with them it'll have an impact middle school as well contacts are new to the district what happened at that point yeah some specific hivs that came about in the last years especially coming back while October that is our children were reintroduced to each other um like most places it wasn't you know 100 smooth and we need to address that and that's what we're doing yeah together so look at some of the highlights is A3 we're talking about Personnel Health genetics reproduction so I just assume we're getting older sitting handle more advanced confidence which reproductions on eighth grade for not doing anything different than whatsoever right
so here we're looking to increase awareness in order to decrease that's the purpose of physical science just want to say to that point to my point before about assaults I have unfortunately been involved I've had to address many many teen pregnancies over the years as well and um sometimes it's hard to put into context because if you're removed from it on a day-to-day basis it sort of doesn't effect you on on a personal level but I'm telling you what I have experienced in my 16 years as an administrator a couple of Standards want to point out under 83 social Central Health the first one differentiates so again the terminology that becomes the more advanced the students differentiate between gender identity gender expression and sexual orientation it's running back in fifth grade they learn from vocabulary
now they start to apply to be great and then take a look at the second one which really starts with halfway the theme of all the Sanders develop a plan for so to promote dignity and respect so again prevention is this but it's also we welcome everyone we treat everyone with respect everyone with dignity those lessons are taught throughout it's equity which ties back to the mission statement it has that someone's lives we've talked about in the video presentation yes by the way reminder remember the standards are on the left that's what you would be opting out at those particular standards right remember we can't change the standards there they are what they are however like I said we can interpret it our way any any three questions um on the uh the one about
uh yeah a plan to uh treat people with dignity and respect I know the standard says um regardless of gender and gender orientation gender expression um is there going to be more than that also discussed in there like uh like what we talked about you know ethnic diversity disability status um absolutely mental health when we're talking about Equity um it's all-encompassing okay so any any time any time at Heinz we hear Equity coming out of my mouth is all encompassing on all of those things um the acceptance of those things like and the respect of those by others so that's the number one Aberdeen interpretation of that standard because that standard was rather limited not that I have any problems with it it is but my my interpretation of equity is brought thank you so
I just again want to just make sure that is clear what we're doing what we're not doing when it comes to learning or talking about gender identification we are not pushing one thing over another we are merely teaching people to accept what other people's sources like I said from the onset equity thank you and um just following up on what Ms Friedman said I think it is important because um acceptance is huge as it is in the middle school a lot of kids struggle with a lot and I know a lot of community members have brought up the concern with mental health and unfortunately our children do struggle especially when it comes to some of these things and so if they can if others can be taught to treat everyone with respect kindness and children
don't have to feel ashamed of who they are I think that's a great thing and I can see from personal experience I have a sister who's fortified and has asked in her and I can't tell you how many times I hear people walking down the street calling her a all of these other things so that's what we're talking about accepting because you know as you can imagine when I hear these things you know um but that's what we're talking about creating an environment where everybody is accepted um and we can move forward together and create a better a better place for all of us we're moved on the 12th grade by this point our students are now young adults we built on all the concepts from second grade to fifth grade eighth grade I'm going
to continue to build and we look at some of the terms in the Sanders you'll hear words like analysis discussion predicts to higher order thinking skills if it's appropriate for 17 18 year olds uh some of the topics that we're talking about throughout the content settings here I've got a new fact pregnancy emotional pregnancy professional STIs mental health and mental Wellness which means where you can touch on some of the other Chambers and lower grade levels But Not independency that it would at the high school level so a lot of standards that we're not going to go through these if they're there for you take a look at besides the idea of diversity and Equity being includes the oil Sanders at the high school level is a lot about Mental Health same thing we're just
about uh finished same thing as Michael just spoke about um for the 12th grade standards analyzing the Sea World analyze a lot because it is one of those higher level things now we're going to switch over the board can ask any final questions and then we're going to turn over so I want to have to come up foreign board members with any additional questions comments thoughts before we turn it over to the public yes I may have missed it if it wasn't directly addressed but I can't recall from our meeting Dr Micah um when at what point is consent being addressed so it's introduced not particular tournament in fifth grade I'm going to talk about boundaries but then consent specifically begins to be free thank you consent begins okay so um I have to read
the statement but just to note everyone will have a chance to seek and questions give input we ask that you can do three minutes because we do have a lot of audience here um so that's the average everyone has a tendency we ask that everyone be respectful of others we depends because we understand people may feel strongly about these topics but we really want to hear each Community member's input so there's that
