This evening we're going to have the junior ROTC present colors. So can we all rise for the junior RTC presentation of colors? Is it in your jacket? >> No. >> What do you need? >> My phone. >> I'll go check and see. >> Thank you. >> It's always great to have the junior RTC present for us. Um, in tonight's board president's report, uh, I don't have it in front of me
because I think I left my phone in the room, but I just want to say welcome to everyone here in attendance. Welcome to everyone that's watching us online, to our staff, our students, and community members. Um, this is the final meeting of 2025. And we made it, board members. I can't believe we're about to hit 2026. So, a couple of things I wanted to address this evening. Thank you to RBA because I actually emailed my presentation. So, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Um, as we move through tonight's meeting, I want to highlight several important items reflected in our agenda that demonstrate the depth, care, and intentional planning taking place across the district. On tonight's agenda, we will recognize January as schoolboard recognition month. This designation reminds us that schoolboard service is rooted in volunteer
leadership, accountability, and advocacy for public education. I want to thank all of my fellow board members for their unwavering commitment to governance, student achievement, and community trust. The decisions we make are guided by our shared responsibility to serve every child in Rosa with excellence and equity. As such, tonight is also a moment of celebration and gratitude. We proudly recognize Miss Angela Alvie Wing, whose years of dedicated service to this boarding community have left have left a lasting legacy. Her leadership, voice, and commitment to students have helped shape the direction of our district, and we sincerely thank her for her service and wish her well and her future endeavors. So, can we just give her a round of applause? >> Thank you, M have left. You are deserving for after serving for so many years. Thank
you so much. >> We are equally proud to celebrate Harrison Elementary School, which has been named a 2025 Blue Living School of Excellent Excellence Lighthouse Award recipient. This honor reflects the collective efforts of our students, education, educators, administrators, families, and partners under the leadership of principal Dr. Melissa Nias. Hson Elementary continues to model what is possible when high expectations, strong instruction, and a supportive school culture come together. So congratulations Harrisa Elementary School. Additionally, we are also advancing critical work in early childhood education under the direction of Patrice Coleman, our director of special services. We are proud to announce that we are welcoming our very first students into the First Light Academy preschool located at the Presbyterian Church here in Rosel. This is a significant first step as we continue to expand highquality early childhood education
opportunities for our youngest scholars. This initiative positions the district to maximize the state's prek expansion grant while ensuring that our children begin their educational journey and nurturing developmentally rich environments that set the foundation for long-term success. This wasn't a project in a bubble. So, I also want to thank our superintendent, Dr. Nathan Fischer, who understood what it meant to find a place for our youngest learners, along with our facilities and technology teams, and our business office, who worked around the clock to ensure that the First Light Academy preschool would be ready to open and accept students and staff upon return time for winter recess. As we approach the holiday season and prepare to close out the calendar year, I want to take a moment to thank our teachers, support staff, administrators, and district professionals, and
this board. Your dedication, often beyond the classroom and beyond the clock, creates the learning environments our students deserve. On behalf of the Rosa Board of Education, thank you for all that you do for our district. We encourage everyone to take time during the upcoming break to rest, reflect, and spend meaningful time with loved ones. May this season bring you peace, renewal, and joy. We look forward to continuing this work together in the new year, moving education forward and building brighter futures for every student. This ends my report. Thank you. I'll now turn it over to Dr. Nathan Fischer who will provide superintendent updates. Thank you. Thank you, John. >> Good evening, everyone. >> Good evening, sir. It's always a pleasure to uh follow the board president's report and usually give an idea to really kind
of hear some of the things that I may hit on. So I I won't go fully in depth as she did, but thank her for those comments she shared tonight. I just want to welcome our families here again tonight and those who are joining us out there on our new YouTube channel. So certainly we thank you for joining us this evening. Just want to let the school community know today marks day 66 of this 2526 school year. So certainly we are progressing uh throughout this academic year at a at a what I like to believe as a a very quick pace. I do want to just acknowledge we had a public comment last board meeting in November. We had a u a comment regarding the lighting on our third avenue uh at the Harrison Elementary
School. Just want to apprise the the folks out there that we have had our electrician come out not only to look at exterior lights at the Harrison Elementary School, but also to look at the other schools across the district that are experiencing some uh dark areas. So, uh that project should be conducted quite shortly. Uh before I dive into tonight's uh celebrations and all the wonderful things I'll highlight, I do want to personally give a uh a moment of gratitude to our outgoing commissioner um Angela Aldi Winbush. Um again, I have to emphasize is this is certainly u you my heartfelt wishes as you continue to move forward. Uh, but I do want to uh say something that really kind of stuck with me and I recall you saying something almost 10 years ago. Most
profound thing you said to me. Uh, I still haven't forgotten and you know what that is. I said you professed that one day that I would be superintendent. >> No doubt about it. >> And I looked at you and said, "Thank you." Okay. All right. Thank you, Mr. Winds. And u, but certainly uh those sp those words really spoke uh such conviction and such belief. it really just stayed with me for throughout the years and I I want to thank you personally uh for making that comment and being at this moment that we are I certainly have have not forgotten it. So anytime I get an opportunity to say it I wanted to make sure I said it publicly. I know I said it privately but certainly I want to thank you personally in front
of your colleagues. You know that sometimes it's just a feeling and I hope it was a good feeling. So thank you again. >> Power in words. >> Thank you. Thank you. Um, I want to talk about some of the the happenings across the district. Um, you know, I just want to let you know that our kindergarten students under their music direction, they just have their wonderful concert entitled Holidays Around the World. Uh, wonderful hearing the the kindergarters sing and certainly there's a lot more concerts that are happening across the school district uh this week. So, we certainly hope you join us for those moments. Uh for those who don't know, we had our final Thanksgiving game, rival game with the Rosel Park community. Uh it was a wonderful opportunity where the two communities got together
for a very festive uh segway into this upcoming game that they had held on Thanksgiving. Uh special recognition was given to a a former teacher here, uh Lewis Graasso, senior, who worked 39 years here at the district and served 30 years as the uh ACS Rams head coach. So I was certainly proud to be a part of that opportunity pregame >> for him. >> And he actually had the only team, one of the only teams in 1989 to to win the NJSIA uh football sectional championship. So certainly was a great opportunity to bring it all back full circle. Uh that marked the end of the 106th edition of the rival Thanksgiving game. Uh following that this month, we just had the Rams uh alumni game which brought back some of our former coaches. We had
Coach Smith, who retired after being with the district for over 35 years, came back to celebrate with us uh for that event. And he's actually going to be uh inducted in the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Bill uh Bruner Award in coaching and that's coming up in January. So we thank him for his contributions. Uh Dr. Griffin shared with us that the Rosel athletic program received the 2425 NJSIAA sportsman award for Union County. So, we're certainly proud of our athletic department showing uh sportsmanship, something that we take for granted in the days of of athletics these days, but we're proud to receive that recognition. Uh let me tell you, I'm so privileged as superintendent. I was joining a lot of our scholars over the last two weeks at a lot of great events such as
Carverson Elementary Superstars podcast. I was so excited that these youngsters uh they asked me some very loaded questions and I just sat there and said I should have had the run sheet beforehand and certainly it was a wonderful experience. They were so full of energy. I and to give me an expanded opportunity, I had an opportunity to visit the ACS Tech Teams podcast and one of the first things I did was show the high school students what the little people were doing. I said, "Y'all got to top this." And certainly uh they were fighting for their lives to make sure that they uh hit the expectation. But it was a wonderful opportunity for our scholars to on both ends to share with me. Also had an opportunity to watch our tech team here at the
high school. participating in the tech teams had a an hour of AI event for the entire last week and certainly I thought I was just walking to observe the students invited me into AI themed jeopardy AI themed cyber security challenges and AI themed escape room activities and I've had to call a friend because I needed help it was just a challenge so I want to thank those scholars here at ACS for giving me such a wonderful opportunity to participate uh this month actually this We just celebrated uh invested day all across the district. On the 12th of December, we proudly wore our vests across the district and most people know that is the traditional uniform of this superintendent to wear a vest to show how invested I am. Certainly, we had an opportunity to see
scholars across the district, staff across the district wear their vests, and it certainly made me proud to see that. All right. For those who don't know, we had our annual senior breakfast with our senior citizens last week. And I told those wonderful uh guests that we have over 6,000 years of combined wisdom in the room. And I also threw something at them that they never heard before. I said, "You are spies." And they looked at me and said, "What?" And I simply broke it down for them. Spies is an acronym for senior partners in educational success. So I wanted them to know that they are part of this mission. And that 6,000 years, we're going to tap into it. I want to continue on. Uh last week also, it was a busy last week. I
had an opportunity to go to the 2025 educ uh educ uh the chamber of commercees uh event where they recognized community members where we had two of our staff members. We had uh Miss Crystal Par Allen from uh Dr. Charles C. Poke and Heather Peters from KSA that received the 2025 educators of the year award. uh recognizing their dedication, leadership uh for our kids across the district and each of these ladies have over two decades of contributions to this school district. So I was very proud that they were recognized. Yes, that is applause. I would be remiss in my responsibilities if I didn't talk about all the wonderful things that are happening at the schools. And one of my superintendent colleagues always said, you must toot your horn when great things are happening across the
district. So, at the KSA, I told you they were doing the the wonderful concert. And Miss Tyrie, who's the music teacher currently, is also the um the composer of the KSA song. So, it's very exciting to know that she's back with us. And she wrote the song some 10 15 10 12 years ago. And certain that song is still going strong. So, she's doing a great job over there. You know about Harrison Elementary School, that blue ribbon excellence award. I have to give it up to them. I was fortunate enough to be able to send send the entire team to uh Orlando to participate in the recognition event with aspirations that all the elementary schools would receive future recognition as we live in schools of excellence. So I challenge them in that regard. Uh Washington
Elementary School had a wonderful program where they were celebrating bike and pedestrian safety. We certainly know that uh it's important for kids to stop, look, and listen. They learn that new techniques. So we're we're excited to know they're participating. They're also participating in the hoodies for homeless where he'll partner with the Rosar Park Rotary Club. Don't worry, I have five more schools to go and we have Dr. Charles P. Uh again, they had a wonderful event where they were celebrating their uh the 10 days of Christmas dress down. And certainly if you follow them on social media, I believe they were doing some very interesting things today. I have to caution if it was safe or not, but they were having lots of fun as they were displaying all the 10 days of Christmas, but
I thought it was 12 days of Christmas. So, I must check and find out where the other two days go. Um, let it be more celebrating wonderful academic progress of their students. They've had a program where they recognize their honorable students for academic excellence and perfect attendance. just an opportunity to identify those students who are doing great things in the classroom and it was celebrated at a special breakfast. They also held a Chromebook care wash. I said it a Chromebook care wash and that was an event where they actually had an activity engaged in caring for their devices and really directing the students back to responsible tech uses for their academic readiness. So that was a wonderful event. Grace Ray had the pleasure of uh the the being a part of an event where the
young writers across their schools. They had a lot of contests that the students participated in and some of the students were selected for publication. Uh one of the the selections is entitled Stranger Saga Tales Beyond the Ordinary. Very excited to see when this gets published. They also a place where they had an opportunity to participate in a community engagement activity. Miss Ramadan's class participated in the fifth annual model Gary Convention. And if you know anything about the uh Gary Convention, this stemmed out of uh a simulation that was inspired by the 1972 National Black Political Convention uh which helps our students build essential leadership skills and research. And Miss White took our wonderful scholars from Grace Wer over to the Almouthi Center where they had an opportunity to perform for seniors. So our students are
out in the community having great great fun. ACS also had a wonderful parent univers university night where they had in collaboration with our uh teen guide zone program where they provided resources to community members uh from a host of Union County support organizations ensuring that the families were connected to comprehensive services. Uh one of the things they did they prepared hundreds of care packages for everyone any everyone especially those who are experiencing homelessness. ACSS also held their financial aid night. They also had an opportunity. They brought in the military to provide the entrance uh processing exam uh which is known as the ASVAB, the armed services vocational aptitude battery last week. So certainly our kids are getting a host of opportunities to take advantage of postsecary opportunities. Can't forget those dancers here at ACS that
had an opportunity to go to Montlair State University. My alum uh alumni. >> All right, second that. All right. and they had an opportunity to to uh participate in the auditioning and also a host of college level programming. So certainly excited for those students who had an opportunity to participate and it's important that I share that this superintendent of schools had an opportunity to represent the Rosal public schools at the league of innovative schools in Washington DC uh where I had an opportunity to advocate for funding sustained funding investment in research and development to support career readiness and STEM education. This advocacy opportunity uh really aligns to our vision 2027. It really focus on all of all students to be future ready through high quality teaching, innovation, expanded career pathways, just a wonderful opportunity to
advocate for the NSF STEM education funding. Uh the experience down in Washington into the offices of of you named it all types of Congress folks and senators. So, it was a very interesting space to be in, but I was glad to represent the school district. >> Yes, that's what I said. Uh, I just in closing, I I do want to say that uh again, uh the work that we do here is clear. You know, we're here to build upon the community. We have over 3,100 scholars who are who are really counting on us to do the right thing. So, certainly when we talk about being invested, this is what invested looks like. Uh we don't just say we care about every student every day. It's our goal and expectation that we show it. We talk
about being targeted with tenacity. Uh we talk about excellence through equity, but these aren't just words for me on the website on on our strategic plan. I believe this is who we are and this is what we do. So certainly I just want to remind everyone we're going to continue to shift and transcend. We're going to continue to be targeted with tenacity uh as the Rosal public school continues to celebrate all the wonderful things happening across the district. And I'm very excited to as as Dr. Washington mentioned that we have our uh preschool program is coming up uh is is really coming to fruition. We are getting ready to continue to expand preschool enrollment. So we certainly looking forward to those opportunity. And that's just a drop in the bucket because there are great things
that are coming in 2026. And I'll put it on the record. We are preparing as we prepare for what we call a a a school district uh referendum in 2026 where we're looking to build a future school. So you'll hear me talking more about that in the months to come. So certainly I want to get everybody on board. But this really concludes the superintendent report and just want to remind everyone all students matter and we're reminded that it's about every student every day. Okay, so this concludes the superintendent's report for this evening. >> Thank you, Dr. Fischer. And can we have the HID investigation reporting for December 2025? >> Sure. The HIV harassment, intimidation, and bullying report for the month of December. reporting window number one. We had one incident that was reported at Harrison
Elementary School, one incident that was investigated and one incident that was concluded as not being ahead. We had one incident, excuse me, at Washington Elementary School. One incident that was investigated and one incident deemed not to be ahead. Elvie Moore, we had three incidents that were investigated. three incidents that were deemed not being a hit. That leaves us with three incidents being reported from LV Moore for the month. Grace will have one incident that was reported and investigated and one incident that was reported as not being a hit. For the month of December 2025, we had a total of six incidents that were reported and six incidents that were reported as not being hibs for the month of December. That concludes the HI investigation report for the month of December 2025. >> Thank you, Dr.
Fischer. Uh I it seems our student representatives are not with us tonight. So now, may I have a motion and a second to accept and approve governance items and presentations as presented? So said windbush >> secondy. >> Is there any discussion about anything that's been presented? >> Since there's no discussion, Mr. Please discuss. >> Miss Angela Alvin Wush. >> Yes. >> Miss Woody. >> Yes. >> Dr. Atkins, >> yes, >> Miss Bond. >> Yes, >> Mrs. Chavez. >> Mrs. Cortez, >> yes. >> Miss Santos, >> Miss Turnich, >> yes. >> And Dr. Washington, >> yes. >> Motion carries. >> Thank you. Now comes the section of the meeting for public comment as mandated by this board's policies. Members of the public who wish to address the board during the public comment portion of this meeting
may do so for four minutes. Please come up to the microphone. Provide your name and address for the record. When speaking, please address all comments to the board president. 035this. Yeah, I just want to, you know, bring something. I don't know if I'm out of subject. I heard your, you know, your speech. You use the word uh opportunities over 60 time. And I have my son, it's uh will day for me. He doesn't have a bunch of opportunity even for he doesn't have Chromebook since the you know the beginning of the school no homework I I know I bring him to a public school and if I don't uh they claim that you know there's a $400 because he the the one provided to him last uh uh school year was broken and they want me to pay $400, you know, otherwise he's not going to have nothing. Me, I don't I'm not working. I don't have that $400. I know I send him to
a public school. I don't know if they can put him the old way because when there was no Chromebook, you know, they give him paper or they told me to go, you know, I can't pay it or the way they they doing it. You know, they should give, you know, you know, parents old way or the new way. You can't like without Chromebook, nothing. No education, no homework, nothing. It's like I'm they punish me. It's like I don't understand what's going on exactly. And uh the other opportunities, you know, they said he's trying for 43 times for basketball. He like basketball. I paying all the time you know YMCA you know uh more than six time paying you know where they teach him basketball but was public school never give him opportunity no opportunity at
all to play basketball something you know I don't know how they select you know they pick you know student to participate the last time this broke my But when I see is crying because he expect to get picked and maybe the coach does don't know the parents. I don't know. For me, I I've seen I went to those trial. I've seen the way they doing it. It's not they're not it's like the pre-selection already done. You know what I'm saying? It's not something they don't like to select to really, you know, select the best one. that's not they're doing and as I said it's about the combook uh issue and uh as I said in fact because before I remember they said if you have uh a um you you you commit uh like something
for the first time they allow you like they're going to wave anything what it's the first time something happened for the first time and you know I'm unable to get you know to get you know it's like the they don't care for me it's not it's not never receive any any I don't know if the school now is about Chromebook no Chromebook no education I don't know what's going on if I can pay you know give those kids opportunity to go the old way. Give them paper paperwork still get homework the same level of same opportunity like every other other kids. That's why I want to bring over here. >> Thank you sir. Can you do me a favor please and give your information to Miss Kio your phone number and your name so that
we can follow up with you on this. Thank you. speaking to the microphone. >> Wait, I can do that. I I used to be in a band. I got it. >> Good evening. >> Um, so Dr. Navarus asked me to represent her tonight to just this statement about our lighthouse awards. So, um, in Dr. Navaris's words, I would like to share how proud I am that Harrison School has earned the Blue Ribbon Lighthouse Award, a recognition that reflects the dedication, excellence, and collective effort of our entire school community. We achieve this honor by demonstrating performance excellence, meeting high standards in state assessments, and showing significant growth in both ELA and math. This award also reflects our strong personal and professional community where collaboration and continuous development are central to our work. Our leadership and educational vitality keeps us focused on growth, innovation, and a shared vision for excellence. And finally, our school, family, and community partnerships ensure that all stakeholders are engaged and invested in our scholar success. We have worked incredibly hard to earn this recognition, and I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished together. I look forward to all that my team and I will continue to build for
our scholars because at Harrison School, we never stop being superstars. >> Thank you. Merry Christmas. Happy holidays. >> Miss Wingwood. Arthur wants me to keep talking. I have two more minutes. >> Let's continue. >> Go ahead, sweetie. >> No, she called me back. What do you want? >> Does she have I have nothing. Ringwood, can you bring up the flag as well as the uh glass trophy so that we could uh formally perhaps have our board to uh >> I thought you had it. >> Okay. Did Did you bring it this evening? >> No. >> Okay. Well, certainly we we will ask you at a a later date to bring those items because I certainly want to celebrate Harrison and their
wonderful opportunity to uh be in the accompany of of educators from across the country who have this distinguished honor. So, thank you all for >> Thank you so much. >> Thank you. It is 8:06 p.m. Board members, will you join me down front uh for the recognition of our outgoing board member, Miss Angela? Yes, me. So again, I just want to say again members members Alvie members certainly I meant it what I said because you meant it when you said it so it definitely left an impression on me and I appreciate the confidence and tonight what we're going to recognize and thank you for your

The lay of the land. I want to thank you for that year. I want to thank you for your service. I know it was a rough time but we wathed it together and we weathered all these other years together. Thank you for your service. Thank you for your commitment and your dedication and I do wish you well. my Sora, I really appreciate everything you've taught me in my my first term and I also
enjoyed being a running mate with you. >> I think you brought a lot to the ticket and I appreciate that. >> Um, Angela, I just want to say thank you uh for the many years in all the different realms in which we had interactions. I appreciate your uh your candid ways of of sharing information. I appreciate your optimism, the way you uh present things with a smile, even if it's not what we want to hear. We I appreciate the honesty and all. Um you have been a great help uh to me personally and to this district and it is very appreciated all of your service. Thank you so very much. You know, I don't talk on this mic. I want to thank you for all your services and congratulations and thank you for all your
hair colors and your lip colors. We're not going to see that no more. Thank you for all your services. Wish you the best. Miss Avy Windbush. It's truly been a pleasure having you as a board member. Thank you for all of your dedication and all of your hard work as a board member. Miss Wendish, >> thank you for all that you've done for us. Thank you for coming to every single graduation and every event at every school. I will miss you. I will miss you when I'm there. So, congratulations. Enjoy your time off. What will you do? What will you do? Miss Windish, I did have a message from Devon. >> Oh, okay. >> He said, "Thank you." He said, "My English teacher is not on the board anymore because Miss Windish, prior to us
becoming board colleagues, she was my children's teacher at Graceful Day." So, thank you. He Devon told me to remember that and I almost forgot. But thank you so much. Well, as I come to this close, nine years is a long time. 2017, I ran with Aisha. And um I went through countless um superintendent until we finally found the right one. And I was praying on that right one because the ones that we went through was we went through so many um presidents uh that I had to sit with and some of them were and you know what we ended up with a good one. We have a really nice tight board now because I've seen some boards that weren't tight from fighting to cops to um I've seen it all. But this board right here
feels good. Feels comfortable. There's no arguing. There's no silliness. We're all educated. We all respect each other. We all have, we're all women except that man right there that got patience. He has patience like crazy. But we all bring something different to the table. And I, you know, it was a pleasure, you know, sitting and just sometimes being a good board member is just listening. Just sitting and listening is being a good board member, too. You don't have to always talk talk talk. You can listen and that way. also participating. But I thank all of you for being with me and being a good partner with me and um continue doing the good work that you're doing. Keep your eyes on the prize which is improving Rosell Board of Education and it was just a
pleasure to serve Rosal Board of Education. Thank you so much. Okay. That was what's up. A Thank you everyone once again. Um just can I have another round of applause for Miss Windish? >> Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Uh moving on now. May I have a motion and a second to accept and approve public comments, awards, and represent uh recommendations along with superintendent recommendations 1.1 through 1.5. >> So said Albush. >> I have a second. >> Is there any discussion on any items? >> Seeing as there's no discussion, may I have a roll call, please? >> Miss Alvie Wimbush. >> Yes. Mrs. Chavez, >> Dr. Atkins, >> yes. >> Miss Bond, >> yes. >> Mrs. Cortez, >> Miss Santos, >> Miss Turnage, >> yes. >> Miss Woody, >> yes. >> Dr. Washington, >> yes.
Motion carries. >> Thank you. Now, may I have a motion and a second to accept and approve personnel items 2.1 through 2.24 and 2.25 and 2.26 on the agenda. >> So, said Ali W. >> Second. >> Uh, any discussion? There's a discussion. Go ahead. >> Yes. Um, I just want to ensure that uh we are actively seeking an assistant for Miss Estz because no one should answer that coach a team alone. >> Okay, I'll write that down. Any other comments? See as there's no further comments, may I have a roll call, please? >> Miss Alvie Wrush? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Cortez, >> yes. >> Dr. Atkins, >> I've seen >> Miss Bon. >> Yes, >> Mrs. Chavez. >> Santos. >> Miss Turnage. >> Yes. >> Miss Woody. Yes, >> Dr. Washington. >> Yes. >> Motion
carries. >> Thank you. Moving on uh to the business items. May I have a motion and a second to accept and approve business items 3.1 through 3.14 and 3.15 on the agenda? >> So said Al second. Any discussion? >> 3.15. >> Oh, and >> Oh, wait. It went all the way over. I'm sorry. 3.1 5 through 3.18 on the agenda. Oh, this is the phone stuff. Yes, I want to make that motion again. May I have a motion and a second to accept and approve business items 3.1 through 3.14 and 3.15 through 3.18 on the add agendum. >> So said Alvie Wimbush. >> Second. >> Woody. >> Any further discussion? Seeing that there's no further discussion, may I have a roll call, please? >> Miss Alvie Wimbush. >> Yes. >> Miss Woody. >> Yes. >>
Dr. Atkins. >> Same. Miss Bond. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Chavez, >> Mrs. Cortez, Miss Turn. Yes, >> Dr. Washington. >> Yes. >> Motion carries. >> Thank you. Moving on to policy. May I have a motion and a second to accept and approve policy, regulations, and bylaws 4.1 for second reading and 4.2 for first reading. >> Second 40. Any further discussion on any of this policies? Since there's no further discussion, may I have a roll call, please. >> Mrs. Chavez, >> yes. >> And second was that I have Miss Woody. >> Yes. >> Miss Alvie Wimbush. >> Yes. >> Dr. Atkins. >> Yes. >> Miss Bond. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Cortez. Miss Turnich. >> Yes. >> Dr. Washington. >> Yes. >> Motion carries. >> Thank you. Now, may I have a motion and a second to
accept and approve curriculum and instruction items 5.1 through 5.21. >> So, says Al Wimbush. >> Second. >> I need a second. >> Woody. Any further discussion? Yes. Um, we received information in regards to, um, the market first marking period data and I just have a couple questions. So um uh one is that um we realize that there have been 368 individuals who have failed courses which is a concern and I just wanted um 368 have failed a course. Yes. High school level. So yeah, so I wanted to discuss that and also um and 70 students don't have devices uh and and what are we going to do um about the no devices um that the students don't have? um because if they don't have the devices, they cannot properly um engage in their um education.
They can't properly engage in their homework. So that's a question that um should be answered. Um that and there was something that you sent to us in reference to the technology challenges. Um, when students are using their own systems, um, we can't monitor what they're actually doing in school because we can't look at their systems the way when they use our when they use our systems, we can look into what they're doing. But when they're using their own devices, we can't look or monitor what those students are doing. Um, so um, based on the information we received, personal devices pose security risk to our network. So we need to do something about that and a number of students and parents have not completed the required online forms. So what can we do to um make
sure we get these parents to sign these forms because they're not signing the forms and we are now Dr. Fisher said what's the number of data six 60th dat um day 65 days in school. So out of these 65 days, we have to do something for our our parents are signing. So just a couple of questions for you. I don't know if you have the answer for me at Can you hear me? >> All right. So today we um I met with Miss Harry and her team here at the high school since the question was for the high school team. And what we have done so far, what they have done is we've identified the children who have failed one, two, three, four or more classes. They've also conferenced with the parents. So the parents,
they did make phone calls and they have been um speaking to the children also to say if you failed these classes, you know, you have to now you have to do your part. You know, we're here to help you. So she also Miss Harry and her team also are offering incentives to the kids. Um as far as devices here at the high school there are about 70 students who don't have devices. However, what they have done is they have dropped off devices at every classroom so that they have the devices there to use for class. Although they're not taking them home, they are there to use during the class period. um with Miss Viline. She has been in contact with parents. There are fees that have to be um paid for damaged laptops, damaged chargers.
So, we have been working with that. However, the devices are there for the students and if they're using them for testing, teachers are asked to come down to the main office and pick up the devices at the beginning of the day so they can have them in their classes all day during testing. So devices are there here at the high school and they are aware that the um we are holding the students >> accountable. >> So you know so basically everyone has to do their part. We're here. We have the devices that they can borrow. We're here to support. Students also have to do their part and come to school ready to learn and willing. We have different policies in place that should they need to retake an assessment, they can. And we're looking at
tutoring after school programs. I know that they um listed many different plans to address the marking period one fa failures. So, continue to review of lesson plans. Implement a shared instructional framework across all content areas. Um, make sure that we're following the 8020 rule. That means that the students should be interacting with one another and learning with each other for 80 minutes. The teacher should be facilitating. They shouldn't be talking the whole time. Um, we have continued weekly PLC's. We have common re um common reting days and common reassessment opportunities. We also have targeted groups. We want to use increased use of LL for deficit skills in math and ELA. The way that would look, let's say if they're working in small groups, work on your deficit skills in the small group. However, when you're
working with the teacher, you're working with the standards that you should know for that particular grade level and content. um utilize Aubry MTSS documentation so we could um provide tier two and tier three. Tier two being small groupoup instruction, tier three being more one-to-one support. And we did speak about using our coaches to push into the classrooms and work with the students. Not only coaching the teachers, but also working with the students. Um let's see, increased modeling of effective practices. So I did tell all the supervisors, VPs, principals, myself, everyone as administrators, if we need to go in there and model lessons, that is what we have to do. No one here is above having to model a lesson. As an administrator, that should be something that comes easy to you. So our expectation is
that you will go in and model effective practices, support your teachers and students, provide ongoing PD. We um are highlighting classroom management um also cultural responsiveness, engagement strategies, um growth mindset, meaningful feedback. So when you evaluate the teachers, give the feedback not only to the teachers but also to the students. By meaningful, I mean don't just say you have an 80 or an 85. Great job. Great job doesn't tell you anything. Tell them exactly what they did well and what they can improve upon. And that goes for students or teachers. This is what I observed. This is what you did really well. This is what can improve on. So two grows and a girl. >> Thank you so much, Dr. Perez. >> That's enough. That's >> Dr. Perez. I have a question um regarding these
Chromebooks because this is almost now the second or third time that we've heard that students don't have their Chromebooks. We've heard it from now a parent. >> We've heard it from our student representatives and you know um and we've broached this question before. So, not to belabor the point, but as a follow-up new business item, can we review the instructional technology policies as it relates to these Chromebooks because there's a problem? And if there's a student that has a free reduced price lunch or a parent suffering from um inability to pay, that shouldn't penalize the student. We should be trying to work with these families on how we can get these devices into these students hands because as the father said, Is there an alternative way? If my child can't have a Chromebook, can I
get paperwork, homework to see? Because if not, that child will continue to struggle. >> And that is an expectation because a Chromebook is just a tool. So, we're using it in the class, but we don't have to use it in the class. You don't have to use a Chromebook every minute of instruction. And if you're using it in class and we are giving you Alona during class, that doesn't mean that you go home now and suddenly you can't work. >> So, then what is the expectation? The expectation from my office is that we have alternatives. You have to have paper. >> So, can you follow up with the teachers to make sure that that paper is going home because the father literally just said here >> that his child gets nothing home. >> No. And
that's not fair. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Yeah. Because I would I would love to see the homework grades of the students who don't have Chromebooks. That I would love to see that data. Um if they have no if they have no way of doing homework that is being sent home. um electronically, how are they doing that homework? So, I would love to see that data to the fact that are they're getting if they if they're getting graded on that. There's definitely there's a miscon and when it comes to engagement, we want our students to engage and as u Dr. Washington said, if there is no Chromebook and there is no paper, how are the students engaging and how are we grading effectively um if we don't have those things in place? So that's something
that we really need to look into um to make sure that these students are getting um all the help they need and those and that is and it should be opportunities. >> Thank you so much. >> Thank you. Um yeah, yes, thank you madam person. I just wanted to add as we were going through the information that was um received by the committee um if we can please ensure that we are concentrating on what the high school is saying that they're needing at this time because I think that when we asked for this um we were actually looking for that raw data right like we were looking for answers as to how can we help our students before we get to that fourth marking period and this is actually going to help us ensure that
once we get to our second, third or fourth marking period, not even the fourth, but second and third, we don't have these numbers especially in the algebra one and geometry where we see majority of our students failing. So if we can support them now before we get to the end of the year or the third marking period, I think we're going to be in a better place too. also um ensuring that again we are helping the high school, the administration at the high school, the teachers at the high school, the students at the high school, students with IEPs, um ML students, everybody at the high school needs that support. So let's just ensure that um we're providing that and we're working together so that we can hit the targets that we're looking for. Thank you.
Um I do Oh, sorry. Mage. Yes. Um I would also like to share that um that as a district we should be ensuring that these parents know that their scholars can access their school um information through the Roosevelt public schools website and um access Cleber and have access to all of the their educational apps through any device. You can access it through your smartphone, through iPads. So there there is an ability to access if they have a device at home or internet access, they can still access their schoolbased apps. >> So they can access you have students in the district so they can go on and >> access canvas. >> Yes. through the Roosevelt public schools website. There is a tab uh for students where they can uh log into Clevver using their uh school
credentials. >> Maybe we should make sure it's prominent on our website >> where they can access it. So those are just my two followups. Just make sure that these apps, if they're instructional apps, if it's on our website, make sure parents can get to it immediately, >> right? >> At least parents know. Um, so that's my second new business item. In addition to reviewing instructional technology policies as it relates to Chromebooks, um I think we should make sure that our website clearly shows and highlights where students can access this information not just for the student information but for the parent information whether and and we need to make sure it goes out in all languages because I can I heard clearly that you know dad was communicating that we need to make sure that that
goes out in the appropriate languages. >> Absolutely. I agree. Were there any other questions? >> I have one more question. >> Comments? >> Um, I have a concern here. Um, based on this information that we received, the highest failures are in our STEM. So, that concerns me. Um, algebra one, geometry, chemistry, um, >> and our math department. >> Yeah, in our math department. I don't know how we can rise from that. And I I did listen to what you said, Dr. Perez, of the different things that you were doing. So, um, I'm thankful for that. But we got to figure out a way that we can make sure that that's not the highest our highest failures and not not only STEM um US history one and two and English three. So that's that's the major
concern and and and based on this our lowest performers are grade 12. It's a hundred of them grade well this says 98% um 98 of the the lowest performers in some of these subjects is um grade 12 it says 100 students versus grade 11 98 students. So, um, we I don't know how based on your information, I guess we're going to use that information, but we got to figure out a way how to push our scores up, not just on our assessments, but also um, you know, in the classroom with the regular homework assignments. So, thank you. Thank you for your answers. >> One more thing I wanted to add, sir. um if we're looking at algebra one and the math courses um not only at the high school but I think we should also
look at the junior high school because the math that they're seeing up there eventually once they get to the high school um that's what might be an issue. Um I think it needs to start at LV Moore actually because they dip again when they get to Grace Day then they dip again when they get to the high school. So we need to see the continuity starting from Elvie Moore through to the high school freshman year. >> Right. >> Okay. >> So we need that data. >> Right. >> So we need that data. Dr. We need that data for um based on what they said. Grades um Elby Moore Grace Wheel Day. We need that data to really um correlate how everything is moving. >> Thank you so much. Um if you can get that to
us and um in the new year, we appreciate it. Thank you. >> Thank you. And just if I could just >> so just just to add uh for the board ask those are very great probing uh uh questions in the data uh and the reason why this information is readily available because we're having data dives. We had a mark and period one data dive uh just two weeks ago where we had an opportunity to look at all marking period one data across all subject areas and all uh content so that we can explicitly determine as the question came up what supports do you need at the building level. So that is always the question like what do you need you know tell what is there some particular resource that whatever of those challenges are. So
each building level admin has been able to identify specific challenges or processes that may be hindering some of their operational uh tasks and instructional tasks. So we do have that type of information and started identifying as again as I identified 60 the 66th day of school. Uh certainly for me it means that as I told everyone we only have six more months of school. I said so we should be everything should have already begun. we've uh intervention should have been initiated, programs should have been initiated. I said because at some point you begun you begin to downslide the academic year. So we are prioritizing all those areas and we're talking about and having those very difficult conversations because as I told everyone, everyone can see the data. There's no there's no there's there's no bl
there are not there aren't blind spots. We know our areas of vulnerability. So certainly we need to begin to look at that information and put some targeted interventions in place. Um so just just want to emphasize that point. So we are looking at those data points. Um and pretty much when we do these data dives is pretty much where building level admins are telling us u what those tools that are uh all those things that are blocking their progress. So as we continue to share out we'll share out you know those other questions that were asked this evening. But I do appreciate hearing those those level of questions because again those are the same questions that we're probing each and every day. >> Thank you Dr. issue. Are there any further questions? If there are
no further questions, may I have a roll call. >> Miss Alvie Wush. >> Yes. >> Miss Woody. >> Yes. >> Dr. Atkins. >> Yes. >> Miss Bond. >> Yes. Mrs. Chavez, >> Mrs. Cortez, >> Miss Turnage, >> yes. >> Dr. Washington, >> yes. >> Motion carries. >> Thank you. Um, prior to asking for a motion to adjurnn, I just want to put the new business on record that we would like to discuss uh, reviewing instructional technology policies as it relates to these Chromebooks and updates on curriculum as stated. >> I would like to say something. >> Sure. >> So, um, on to on tonight um, we have some backpacks for um, our board members. Um, this bracelet supports Blessings in a Backpack, a nonprofit that mobilizes communities to provide food to school children in need.
And I'm glad to say that um in November, our school was used to help provide for children in need. So, I applaud the Rose Up Board of Education and its administration and its board of education for doing just that. um providing food right there in our community and a lot of board members were right out there passing out the food. So I applaud you um for your support um and being a blessing in the backpack. So all of our board members should have one of these blessings in the backpack. Just want to say thank you for the work that you do. um and have a beautiful um holiday and blessings to all and relax and release. And Dr. Dr. Fisher, thank you for our gifts um and to your administration. We think that this is
such a nice idea of you. You know, you you bump us up. You bump our swag up and we appreciate the swag. We appreciate the swag. We don't get paid, but we appreciate the swag that you Thank you. >> Thank you. Um uh before I close, I just want to wish everyone very happy holiday, very restful holiday, very restful new year. It's been a lot. Um a staff member came up to me and said, you know, this is the most active board I've ever seen. So kudos to you on being present. Kudos to you for going out and being a part of the community, not only in the Rosel community, but in the school's community. With that, I will ask for a motion to adjurnn. I move that we adjourn. Second. >> Last motion. >>
Second. >> Last motion. >> Second. All in favor. >> I. Thank you everyone. Have a happy healthy holiday and new year. We will see you in January. Hey.
