Miss bucino Miss Ean here miss hollat here Mr parate here Mr Sher here Mr trowman here miss wtz here miss Calderone here hate that thing notice of the October 16th 2023 meeting in the Board of Education was emailed to the clerks of the buroughs of Essexville North Co and Rosland and to the township of Fairfield and to the editor of the progress on January 6 2023 in the Star Ledger on the same day notice of the location change for the remaining 2023 meetings was emailed to the clerks of the Burrows of essexfells North Co and rosand and to the township of Fairfield and the editor of the progress on August 15th 2023 welcome everyone Miss lab nice to see you um so my report is um brief I just wanted to talk about that um

there was a Essex County um meeting this past week and we had an attendance Bethany Debbie Damian um Melissa attended virtually and Mar adal and myself oh and Frank I'm sorry um and the discussion was predominantly regarding finances within uh Essex County how the different districts are addressing it the Bas were on a panel that was discussed um it was discussed about the needs of Essex County and going forward um the meetings that we would be in attendance to and um we have actually been chosen because Damen submitted our name so uh West Essex has been sub has been um chosen to be the recipient for the are we April host it yeah yes we are going to host the April Essex County meeting which will be the unsung heroes so that will be here

at West essic so we're excited about that because we a nice time to show off our facility and everything and um you know please come and join us um it's always a wonderful event for the students in the meantime we've been attending some of the events that have been going on um I went to the Chris Heron one I went to Debbie Silvers um tomorrow we look forward to the social media one at the middle school um some of the board members will report out on what they've attended um and overall it's um we're you know in full swing going forward um it's already you know the end of October almost looking you know towards teachers convention and all that and and then there are also there will be um eight board members attending the

New Jersey school board's Conference next week in addition to um Ryan Gupta and our um head of Maintenance tant um so we look forward to that and um Melissa will be attending in sky so we will be attending all the various workshops that are offered to the board of education for our furthering our um credits for whatever type of um some of us are going working towards Master certification um Mary Adell and I are working towards leadership certification which will be our last one um and the board as a whole will continue their credits for master certification and working towards that okay so with that being said I'm going to turn it over to Damien okay so um the two-hour delayed openings uh that we've been using for professional development have been extremely effective um

and giving us that time to work with our staff on a number of initiatives so um on tonight's agenda I've made a recommendation to add a two-hour delayed opening for October 23rd and we'll be focusing a lot on some of our school climate uh one of our school climate and culture initiatives which you'll hear a little bit more about when Dr Westervelt and Mrs Hall speak um in a few minutes um tonight's exciting um we have our high school student representative that will be approved by the board um I don't want to steal Mr dberto Thunder Mr dberto you want to deviate off the schedule a little bit and introduce our student sure so welcome to Joselyn dezman Joselyn Jos is on tonight's agenda to be approved as a student representative to the board of

ed um so just a little bit about the whole process and the election candidates first not a word not a word candidates first had to go through the application process which included getting 10 student endorsements or signatures from each grade level applicants also needed five endorsements from community members and five endorsements from faculty members applicants had to submit a platform statement and they were also asked to create a campaign video that would then be sent to all the students and then in a schoolwide election in which 882 students voted Joselyn deguzman was selected as the student representative to the board of ed Joselyn is very well suited to this position she is already on student council she is an officer in the Multicultural Club National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society and as a

Girl Scout she had opportunities to teach art to underprivileged children and those children continue to be the inspiration and motivation for Joselyn to continue to serve her community she is a model student and has maintained a very rigorous schedule she's taking six AP classes this year and rarely has she ever had a study hall even this year as a senior when she gets the privilege to either show up late or leave early she is fully prepared to serve her classmates and dedicate much time and effort to her position on the west desic Board of Education welcome [Applause] Jocelyn we look forward to working with you um I mentioned briefly uh tonight uh Dr Westervelt and um Mrs Hol who are our culture and climate coordinators uh they'll be giving uh you an overview on some

of the um big big topics and some of the great things that we're we be working on this school year and the last thing is I just want to give uh Dr Westervelt um some recognition um it's always nice when our um administrators or our employees can go to Statewide conventions or Regional conventions and be presenters and Dr Westervelt recently presented at the New Jersey supervisors and principales Association conference in Atlantic City with the topic improving School climate through student voice so congratulations Dr Westervelt on that and with that being said I'll turn it over to uh Miss Hobie our assistant principal at the high school hi good evening Justin welcome always nice to see kids outside of school doing positive things with thank you because I don't have my glasses thanks man' good so

as you know we are required by uh state law to report our numbers out in public from last year so these are the numbers from last year in the categories in which students could have been or were actually suspended from school we try to keep a running total so you can kind of see a little bit better of what's going on whether we're going up or down we kind of seem to always be and relatively close to each other so I'll go through the high school first if you look at the First Column there threat we had one threat we also had three physical contacts those are not fights those are kids who put their hands on each other and really shouldn't but it never actually turned into a fight we did have one actual

fight that took place in our building we had one weapon in the building which was an Orbee gun I'll make sure everybody understands it was not a actual weapon but for transparency reasons we must report it in public so that's what it was um we had eight HIV investigations four of them were confirmed we had 11 students who came un fell underneath the substance abuse policy for positive test results and we had nine students who were where we confiscated electronic Apes out of in the middle school they had zero threats they had six you can tell I don't have my glasses on six um physical physical contacts or inappropriate physical contact they had one fight they had no weapons in the building whatsoever they had 15 HIV investigations seven of their were those were confirmed

they had seven that fell underneath the substance abuse policy and they had six electronic Vapes so those are the numbers for us that we have to report out public those go into our system that the NJ dooe pulls from on different reports and different things like that also in your packet I'll just quickly jump to the HIV self assessment grade that is a a report that Lisa tamburan and I do together basically we grading ourselves on how we are doing things most of it is procedurally based so the majority of these grades are in the high number 78 is your highest number and the majority of it is 10 days investigation completed two days to the principal two days to the superintendent given the window for appeal you know different things like that there is

one area in the beginning where it talks about programs and initiatives and bringing in District policies and as you know we partnered with St Elizabeth's we're going on I just asked Kim we're going on year three so this is not new for us but again it's an area where I think everybody in the state needs to grow and continue to work and continue move and continue to to work in a positive direction so for those um the high school we got 72 points out of that 78 Lisa got 73 out of the 78 and most of that is in the area of trying to continue to bring in programs initiatives and get the positive climate and culture in the building to be raised up a notch normally I would talk further about those things but

I don't want to steal Dr Westervelt Thunder because this is definitely her ER of expertise with Miss Hol I'm going Brit introduce them and they're going to talk about those initiatives and things moving forward Dr W about hi good evening all right so Lisa um Miss hols and I are very excited to be here tonight to talk to you about some of the district initiatives for climate and culture something we are both very passionate about um there we go a clicker there we go all right so this year we are in year three of our St Elizabeth University School culture and climate initiative if you remember back in November 2021 we administered a school climate survey um actually at that time we had looked at a couple different culture and climate programs and no place

for hate was one that we had our eye on but we ultimately went with St Elizabeth University because they had a climate survey that was well received from other surrounding districts and the data that we received from that climate survey was invaluable to us um and it really kind of jump started some of the initiative that we've been working on in the past couple years so this year because it is year three that climate survey will be implemented again and will be administered again in the spring of 2024 and we're hopeful that the results will show some improvement because we have been working hard in this area um and also as a district we are now implementing Anti-Defamation leagues no place for hate what's really cool about this program um so first of all just

to talk about why we're implementing this program this summer Dr denevi had mentioned that she was interested in implementing at the middle school and we were in conversation and so Mr dberto Miss Hobie and I we said you know what this is something good for the high school too we could all really use this program and work towards it so what's really cool about the program it's a student Le program and that's really important that the students take the lead on it they really have ownership of the program so it's something that student body will buy into because it's run by the students um and it cultivates leadership it promotes Unity it engages students it amplifies student voice and um we're really excited about it we're going to roll it out to the staff on

October 23rd because it's important that we have buyin from the entire School Community it's important that the staff understands what the program is what we're asking of them and then they're once they hear everything once they hear The razzled Dazzle from Miss Hol and I they're goingon to be like yes we are on board um and then we're going to kick off to the students on November 6 each grade level will have an assembly where they're going to learn about it and um it's just really to give them a understanding of why we're doing it and what it is and then in our English classes November 14th to 16th there will be a pledge signing activity so as you can see here on this next slide that's the no place for hate pledge the program

has lots of options it comes with different um avenues for students to implement the pledge so one of them is just have your school sign the pledge and then keep it moving and then do these three activities but we are we're Achievers here at West essics High School and Middle School right we are Achievers so we wanted to go for four activities so we we're turning the pledge signing into one of the activities that can count towards the no place for hate designation um and so for us to be considered a no place for hate school we have to complete at least three of these activities and like I said we're going to go for the fourth one so we'll have four activities and you can see our timeline up there these activities are I

can't even really tell you exactly what they are because the students the student committees they come together and they really decide which activities we're going to do in each school um but we do have PR pre approved activities from the no place for hate program they give us like sample activities and stuff that's you know tried and true activities what makes it count though it's not something like and this is what really sold me on this program it's not like us going around and putting posters on the halls in the halls and students saying okay yeah I saw a poster that's an activity no for it to count as an activity it has to be include discussion and learning for all students so it's really a meaningful um dialogue that we have and it's a

very intentional process it's moving One Step Above being kind to really being like anti-bias and that's what's what struck me is that this is really we're going to learn from this and it's will be meaningful for the students um and then hopefully come May 22nd we will have the banner ceremony where we are awarded a no place for hate designation um so that's for the district for the high school to dive in a little deeper with our high school climate team last year our climate team included 23 students these students were nominated and recommended by staff members in the building this year we increased that membership to 53 students based on student interest we have a lot of students at the high school we want more student voices in the conversation we also increased our

staff membership on the climate team um so this year we now have 23 staff members because we had a climate team for staff and then we also had a social justice committee and they both met monthly and they both had the same goal improve the culture and climate of the school so this year we combin them so we're really excited that we have many voices in our climate team discussions some of the initiatives that we're working on is implementing the ADL no place for hate program and the um with that there needs to be a parent component so the school has added nine parents to The Climate team and we're excited to also have those parents um join us and be part of the conversation we're also using um Keen University's we're part of keen

University's diversity Council on global education and citizen Citizenship it's a program that promotes student leaders through the lens of uh diversity equity and inclusion so we're excited that on November 17th the Juniors and seniors from our climate team are going to attend the high school leadership conference there and one of our Juniors or seniors has been nominated for the joy Prescott humanitarian award I can't tell you who because they don't know yet so um look forward to we look forward to sharing that information later in the year and then something else we're excited about is last year the climate team came together through the support and guidance of our st e representative consultant we identified one area at the high school that we felt needed to be worked on something that we could really put

into action something that we can improve and so it was communication within the building and so what we decided to do is we were going to revise the roles and responsibilities of the student council because we had a student council in place they are students who are elected by the student body they are the student voice but we just wanted them to have a more impactful role and so we switched it up a little bit and then this year they are now going to have hold a forum each marking period where all students are welcome to attend and to voice their concerns and they kind of hold it like a board board meeting which is cool and it gives the student council Representatives more ownership of their roles in student council we're also creating a

feedback form that will be available to students at all times throughout the year they can just it'll be on their bookmark so that they have something they want to express or questions they want to ask they can click on this feedback form fill it out and then that feedback form will go to the student council members so the student council members will have an opportunity to kind of sift through it and work with the advisers and bring that to the administration and the last thing we were doing with communication is the daily announcements there is so much information that is shared in the morning good useful information but then throughout the day people would forget like hey what is it what was said I heard something there's a meeting after school where is that meeting

and so now we put the daily announcements in the high school files bookmark for the students so that information is there for them always so they have that and again communication is something we're constantly working on right we can always improve communication especially as fast as communication changes throughout um so that's just some of the stuff we have going on at the high school and we're looking forward we're really excited about it and now for the Middle School okay so the middle school is also working on some activities that allow our students to reflect on classmates perspectives feelings and that promote kindness um since the last board meeting we had Miss Tam buy meet with the seventh and eighth grade students in separate assemblies called let's chat uh topics were um uh Hib law reviewing

that with the students the importance of being kind to one another and how to use the anonymous Reporting System um to make sure they know how to work that to alert us to any of their concerns the um School counseling team has been working on presentations and visiting lunch studies on you know different topics uh to basically encourage our middle school students to be good-hearted and kind people um so the lessons that they are providing are discussion based and the topics that we are hitting are based on student feedback teacher feedback administrators based on the trends and the needs of the school um we most recently visited all the seventh and eighth grade PE classes during the week of respect to provide anti-bullying lessons seventh graders got a lesson on the importance of being an

upstander how to do it how to be a upstander and you know tips for being kind eighth graders um had a lesson on how to deescalate and how to avoid um digital drama and cyber bullying um another program that we've implemented um at the middle school is Bound for greatness with d West thank you to the Fairfield and North Caldwell Municipal alliances for providing this motor motivational program it's designed to get students to realize their self-worth to you know build character set goals and um learn leadership skills um our next group meeting and we have a whole wide um school assembly is on October 25th uh the Middle School culture and climate meetings are ongoing we are working on carrying out our current activities and in talks of always developing new IDE ideas and new

programs to reach our students currently uh the Middle School culture and climate committee is broke into um two subgroups one group is working on the little words project they are selling We Care bracelets I don't know if you could you can't really see them but they're so cute um these We Care bracelets to represent our core values care stands for collaboration awareness resilience and empathy and we're hoping that when the students wear this they remember to care about others and that they are care for um our other subgroup is going to be working on the um adl's no place for hate program we had our first meeting on October 6th where we discussed the importance of a high quality and a good character you know School building we had 21 students six parents and six

teachers participate it was wonderful I mean I haven't been in the classroom in a while but like leading the discussions was really how do you do this fun um I made this little worksheet again I was like lesson um so we went through this and it was just exciting to get our students to talk and to really and they had some really great ideas so again that's the whole idea of this no place for hate that it's student driven so if you take a look at the bottom sorry it doesn't look so clear but they each got into groups and they had to brainstorm ideas for the pledge Banner so so we um you know came up with some ideas they drew it on the board I put it into a Google form and then

all the kids voted on which one they um want to implement for pledge Signing Day so um we'll let you know because we haven't told them yet so our next meeting is uh at the end of October but they were really excited every time I see the kids in the Halls they're like what which one which one what do we have so um you know the kids are excited to do this there was lots of great discussion and I'm you know we're just really excited for this um so I will turn it over to Dr D leevy she will now discuss you know other events that are taking place in the Middle School oh yeah sure oh you have one oh see oh pass it oh good I'm like you got one already wow was

like a hot commodity well how many do we have we started out small we gave some to you know the um leaders and um the committee members to like walk around and like promote it so we have about a 100 to sell to and what's cool about that program too the founder of the um little words project was somebody who was you know picked on and kind of pushed around in school too so that whole idea of wearing words that you know mean something and to look down at your wrist and remember you know to be resilient to be um determined and don't give up and you got this for motivation and inspiration is you know the whole reason why the Middle School chose that and the board and you guys want these bracelets too

yeah my kids all over bracelets oh yeah I I think that the I wasn't on the business end of it so I'm not quite sure how much money we're making off them Dr Westervelt you sent an email to the I think to the entire parent Community maybe a month or so ago asking for parents who wanted to be involved in something yes is it this is it the okay and so you've selected was it nine for the district I was looking for one per um town but then we had such an overwhelming response and it was really hard to narrow it down so we did try to pick parents who didn't have a child on the committee so that at least there was representation from different families throughout the school so we have nine parents

thanks I'm glad you got a good response for for those parents who weren't able to to participate in this are there other opportunities maybe like coffee with the superintendent is that still going on this year and other ways for them to to be active in the community yes we will definitely find ways to partner with them throughout the year fantastic thanks yeah and that and that that committee was very cute too the students came identified how to roll this out they went um the committee members went into lunch studies they prepared a PowerPoint they explained the purpose of the bracelets how much when they were going to be able to buy them and that sort so they're really into it I think they're $30 oh that's the business side oh I'm sure these these uh

committees uh climate and culture committee will do wonderful things with that money we programs all righty thank you ad so we were afraid to buy too many and not know if we would sell them or not so we're kind of so we'll see how they we'll see how tomorrow goes it's kind of an exciting day we've been talking about it for a long time so and Lisa tambur really has done a great job with that program so thank you okay I I just want to start by thanking uh Damien and the board uh for bringing Debbie silver in last week and for Ryan gupta's help with coordinating her you know she came to talk to the staff um about different differentiated instruction which is an educational term but she really spoke to them and emphasized

building relationships with kids that any instruction that takes place and she we know this but she reminded us and I think it was a a a wonderful message um that she sent so thank you to everyone uh for allowing that to come to fruition and I know it was very well received here at the middle school she was very funny um with her southern accent um so so we really enjoyed that talking about teaching and learning uh as many of you know October is school safety month the middle school has a number of activities going on throughout the month uh Mrs Hol talked about the counselor's mini lessons so I won't touch upon that I will remind you that uh Mrs purcel is leading Red Ribbon Week which is next week red rman week uh

she's working with the municipal Alliance and encourages students to live drug and alcohol free so you'll notice literally red ribbons will be throughout uh the campus uh that also has a pledge signing and this year the theme is be kind to your mind and that's a national theme tomorrow we have our social media assembly with Lauren moriello Lauren is a licensed professional counselor she lives and works in the local area she did come last year and gave an assembly to both grade levels this year she will only be presenting to our seventh graders because the eighth graders saw it last year at seventh graders uh she'll do that tomorrow afternoon and then she is also going to hold a parent Presentation tomorrow evening here at the middle school middle school auditorium at 700 p.m. all

of our board members you are always welcome to come to any of our grade level assemblies if you'd like to you know you can always pop in if you don't have anything else going on uh on October 19th which is this Thursday the middle school is hosting cookie with a cop we did this a few years ago and then with coid we stopped doing it um members of the essexfells Fairfield North cwell and rosand police departments will be on site during the lunch block to enjoy some delicious cookies and conversations with our Middle School students we think it's an opportunity to just get the kids acclimated to having uh more officers in the building and feeling comfortable around them um we want to send a special thank you to the PTO uh who is sponsoring

this and and purchasing the cookies for us so we're looking forward to that October yes I'm sorry what you can come you can come feel free to come uh October 23rd which is on Monday we have Sergeant Rich coming to the Middle School Sergeant Rich has nearly 30 years experience as a police off officer within the summit Police Department he is a cyber security expert and he will speak to our eighth graders about the personal and legal consequences of misusing Technology social media and popular apps like Snapchat Tik Tok Instagram and so on um and students are obviously encouraged to be upstanders and uh and do what is right so he's coming next week and then finally this week we also have our spirit week which is kind of a crazy day I'm not going

to lie next year I don't want to have Spirit Week on the week of a board meeting because I didn't get to wear my pajamas today um but uh today was pajama day Thursday is our pep rally I want to thank the high school they're allowing us to use like um their marching band and their cheerleaders which come and make the the day a little bit more festive for us so we appreciate that they kind of allow us to do that every year and a special thank you to our student council um Mrs Bramhall and Mrs summer for coordinating that so that's all I have for next slide do I have it I don't know I don't even know where the computer is over there they're not well we already welcomed Joselyn so we'll talk

with substance abuse with sophomores and juniors and sergeant Tom Rich talked to freshman about cyber security and the common but potentially disastrous mistakes that students can make with social media and we are looking forward to our all school assembly for Chris Singleton on November 13th he's a professional baseball player who lost his mother in the Emanuel Church tragedy in Charleston South Carolina and finally in sports news but not on the slide football secured his spot in the state sectional playoffs with their win over West Morris on October 5th great game field hockey is ranked number four in the US and number one in New Jersey their record is currently either 12-1 or 13- one and the girls defeated longtime rival Oak null 2-0 last week volleyball hosted the dig the Dig pink breast cancer awareness

they're still here so big shout out to the peer leaders for dedicating their time um I was hoping to get some pictures of color day for you but those pictures did not get processed soon enough by our resident photograph but of course this past Friday was color day the culmination of spirit week and uh and also our Battle of the classes tyght pep rally one of the greatest Traditions here at West Essex and it was a great time lot lots of enthusiasm by all classes and uh the seniors did squeak it out just narrowly but but they they squeaked out the win at the out of the classes and that's it for me uh I had the pleasure of attending also the Chris Heron event um with my wife uh I thought it was a

great event it was informative it was moving um and it gave us some great tools to go home and speak to our kids about so I'd like to say thank you to Mr maoji for bringing uh him to the school I thought it was fantastic um I'd also like to say thank you to Mr Machi uh and the high school staff and administration for hosting the Harlem Wizards versus the Fairfield teachers and police event this past Saturday sponsored by the Fairfield HSA uh it was all around a great night it was a lot of fun uh raised a lot of money for the HSA which I'm sure they'll put to Great use thank you thanks uh had I known it was pajama day I would certainly have joined you Dr dun Ley um so let's

see uh you had we had back to school night on the 21st uh another great one uh sorry I didn't make it to middle school this time but uh High School uh the students the directing traffic the bands playing um the the faculty the classes another really well-run night um so thank you for that I was impressed with with everybody there then there uh let's see we had Junior parent night I thought uh Mrs tremaroli knocked it out of the park uh I was in broke up in the library and Auditorium I think I'm in the library group and uh really impressed with the structure of the evening for those who haven't been through this uh we talked about Naviance letters of recommendation Naviance for those who haven't gotten to this yet is uh it's

different than when we went to college everything's online of course and um and it's a really well organ I know this is not a a tool that is created by West essic but it's it makes things a lot easier for parents and students to figure out where are they going how to navigate through Naviance uh the guidance counselors were able to help you with that uh talked about college visits the the schools coming here for half an hour at a time how a sign up for it how to get your kids involved um and how to read a transcript uh what are the dates that matter when uh when do we start worrying about finances which by the way comes up pretty quickly um so that was really nice followed by the college fair and

I I saw you there um Mr Machi that was how many schools do we have a 100 yeah 100 Schools and number of different towns coming in outside of the West Essex District um representatives from we had New Jersey in in one uh one room and then schools from the rest of the country throughout the hallways uh it was nice to see the other parents the students everybody kind of learning something about um different schools different programs different sizes and picking up little stickers so that was really nice and just on top of that my uh my daughter is on the dance team and so I've been to all the home football games this last one was a little chilly uh so I'm kind of glad that they're done but U it's always nice to

see our our team the community coming together so thank you for that uh I think I'm going to take a break for a week and then uh and then we'll be back for some more activities this um the Middle School back to school night it it was nice to see you know the transition of the sixth grade parents coming up here and um it was was a a great event um I also attended Chris Haron and um that was truly uh an emotional um I don't know there's just no words to really say when you sit here and you actually listen to everything that he went through um it it was very an emotional evening and um Debbie silver she was very entertaining I loved her because she clapped because the board president was there
