Allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Welcome everyone. Hope everyone had a great break and thank you to those of us joining us, those of you joining us in person and those of you watching on YouTube. January is National Mentoring Month in Jericho. We are very proud of our effort to build connections between students and faculty, faculty and faculty and faculty and administrators. There is extensive mentoring across all levels in our district as we recognize the value of supportive relationships for personal and professional growth. As most of you are aware, we had a precautionary emergency evacuation of the high school and school campus on Tuesday. That process went very

smoothly thanks in no small part to the tremendous work in practicing and preparing for such events by our building leaders, principles Priszano, Cummings and Gleason and assistant principles Finley, Mandonis and Belude. We also want to thank the leadership and members of the Jericho Fire Department for their prompt response and efforts. And then a special thank you to our transportation department led by Mr. Cassell Stone who actually had the buses come back as precautionary measures to take our students home should they have to go home in the middle of the day. So I want to thank all those people involved and all the teachers who helped run those evacuation drills. Some quick items. Schools will be closed this Monday the 19th for Martin Luther King Day. Though a quick piece of trivia that only me and

Miss Milo probably know, today the 15th is Martin Luther King Jr's actual birthday. Reminder, registration for our prek lottery is open and the drawing will be held next week. So don't delay in submitting your application for your child. The application can be found on our website on the landing page, the tab all the way to the right. This past week, or was it last week, Mr. Con sent an email out about electric scooters and ebikes. I was hoping Mr. Con could just give us a quick overview of what he sent out. Thanks, Sam. Um, I received uh some information through uh state education and the county uh in regards to ebikes and ecooters. Uh there were some flyers and some key information uh last month when we hosted our district safety committee meeting. Uh we

discussed it there and felt that it would be really important to share with all parents and uh I even included high school and middle school students uh throughout the district. So, some of the key points that are really important for our parents to recognize and for our students to recognize is that you must be 16 years or older to be validly driving or utilizing any ebike or e scooter. Um, and uh that is by law. And then uh the information that we shared out uh included uh other uh mandates and restrictions based on how fast a certain vehicle may travel and the classification. So, I encourage all parents and certainly even all students uh who may be interested in using ebikes or e- scooters uh to uh look over that email through Parent Square that

we sent out and to read the flyers. And from a school-based standpoint, uh obviously any students that are looking to uh utilize ebikes or ski scooters to come to school would need to fall within these legal requirements in order for it even to be considered. >> And what about the parking issue for those ebikes and e scooters? >> So, uh often it's a challenge. I'm aware of one student who is of legal age who does use it to come to the school and they have found a place to uh lock it up, but we do not have uh a standard a lotment of bike racks uh that we have in place to be able to support that. Thank you very much. And finally, for all those contacting your local board representative about next year's calendar,

it is still being finalized. We hope to have it on the agenda for our meeting on January 29th. Unless any of my colleagues have something to add before we turn the meeting over now to our superintendent. Hello everyone. Thank you for joining us in our usual nine slides this week this meeting. understanding policy. So where do policies come from? How do policies work at Jericho and policy timeline at our district? That's what we're going to be discussing. So the basics, where do our laws come from? Everyone knows the Constitution of the United States. There's nothing in the Constitution about education at all. So it falls to the state that you live in. Where does the power come from for Jericho? It comes from article 35 in New York State Education Law, which is the Union

Free Districts. That's where all of the power comes from. In addition to the adopted policies, the operation of the school district is governed by applicable laws, regulations of the commissioner of education, civil service requirements because we have employees who are civil servants, board of education resolutions when they vote on things. Those are what we follow. School administrative regulations and also contracts. So what is a policy? It is actually the law of the school. That's why it is voted on. What is the process to develop it? Well, first an issue is discussed. If there's a concern, if there's a question, what should we do? If it's a question of what should students take, what should be a grading policy that's discussed, then we develop the policy, where do we get our policies from? Many times we

get them from Eerie Boseies which is a everyone knows what Boseies is and out of the Erie area they develop them and send samples. However, in those sample language is our job to change the language that are applicable to each each district which in this case is Jericho. Then we do a first reading. So if you can imagine we're announcing to the public, hey this is going to be our law. This is going to be our policy, our law that we are going to follow. If you have any questions, you have any concerns, come out and ask. [clears throat] Then there's a second reading. Same thing. Here's your opportunity to say something, to hear it. If you have any questions, after that, it is approved and that becomes our law. So, a question I get

regularly now is where are we with our current policies? So, thankfully, you know, the board of education, I say this again and I I appreciate it. When I got here in summer, first thing we did, we had a board retreat. One of the things we discussed was creating uh board goals, a strategic plan and also re rewriting all of the policies. The board has engaged with Eris Boseies to give us all of the policies and right now with the help of Mike Larkin, you know, we put a lot of our policies side by side in a lot of artificial intelligence doing comparisons. The board has been presented with little blurbs of what the differences are, but we're doing redline versions. They will get that within the next two weeks and then from there they will

start to approve all of the changes of the policies moving forward and we will be up to date. After that point we will continually get updates from Yuri Boseies where we will vote on regularly as the changes come through. Any questions about policies? It's an exciting topic of studying laws. It's >> is it all correct what he said Mr. You said >> there's nine slides. It's good that counted. Usually it's five to seven. >> So we look forward to creating our policies and working with you. Thank you. >> No, it doesn't mean longer meetings [laughter] in case anyone wants to speak. Before we move to our one piece of business, I did promise I was also going to thank first student who very quickly worked with Mr. Stone to get us our buses when we

needed them on Tuesday. Unfortunately, we did not need we did not need them. Tuesday's incident will lead to a new policy. that you should >> it comes from the super I was not there to sorry >> so we will be working on a policy that's one of the things we just discussed about dorian fruit um if you have not heard dorian fruit was the cause of the odor that was in our school it was in one particular classroom you know went into another area so if you google dorian fruit you will notice that there's it's banned on airlines it's banned in train stations and apparently it's very delicious according to some of our board members but we will not be allowing dorian food in our school in the future. Um, and we will have a

policy regarding that very soon. Teach your Dorian while you can. Opportunity for the public to be heard. Um, if you'd like to make a comment, ask a question, please approach the microphone, tell us your name, and if you representing a specific group, your affiliation. If you'd like your statement to be included in our board minutes, you must hand a written copy of your remarks to our district clerk, Victor Emanuel, before leaving tonight. As always, public discussion on matters related to staff and students during which their reputation, privacy or right to due process or those of others could in some way be violated is prohibited. This has become the most uneventful part of our meeting and it remains so. Maybe when we get to policies, maybe there are Dorian fruit lovers Dorian. Um, no one we

will close that part of our meeting. As always, um, we have no unfinished or new business. We just have approval of schedules. Um schedule little I human resources board schedule. Do I have a motion? >> Thank you, Mrs. Bartnoff. Second. Thank you, Mrs. Citron. Any discussion? Beautiful. All in favor of approving schedules? Any of my board members, Miss Cen, administrators have anything to add before we move forward? Okay. As all business on the agenda for tonight's meeting is complete. Do I have a motion to adjurnn? >> Oh, I was like, hold. Thank you, Mrs. I'll take yours as a second. >> Yes, I'm going to get that. Oh, I apologize, Mr. I do do that always backwards. I always do it second. Thank you, Mr. Thank you, Mr. Emanuel. Do I have a motion? I

apologize. To adjourn to executive session to discuss a personnel matter. We will only we will not be taking any votes afterwards. We will simply be coming to close the public session of the meeting. Do I have a motion to move into executive session to discuss a personnel matter? Thank you, Mr. Jen. Second. Thank you, Mr. Citron. Any discussion? Without that, we will come back and do it. But we look forward to seeing everyone on the 29th at what is still Kanti Elementary School. >> I know that this discussion part. Do I have a motion? Do I have a vote? All in favor of adjourning to executive session. >> Thank you. 5. Thank you very much for coming. Sorry I wasn't more excited. I'll do more poetry next month. Okay.
