this evening, we have a few programs to highlight. Really excited to share. There's so this time of year, there's so many incredible things going on. Um you know, but best to have them presented from some of our staff and students. So I'd invite Mr. Hoffman first to share some uh recent events, exciting events in the arts. Art. Thank you, Mr. Superintendent. Good evening, everyone. Dan Hoffman, high school art teacher, joined by our steam arts department, Ms. Sarah Fiddler, our nature teacher, and Ms. Saynor, middle school art teacher, and two of our incredible student artists, Kensington and Olive. We'll be able to hear from them in just a few moments. Um just to acknowledge for the folks online viewing, parts of the presentation are going to be just reserved for in-house attendees cuz we do have
a few photos that we're sorting through for some photo privacy reasons, so we just want to acknowledge that for anyone watching at home. Um oh my goodness, April 17th, what an incredible day. Our steam roller festival felt like it was 2 years in the making. So, it was an incredible showing of art, our community, and everything we had. So, uh Dr. Mark, would you be kind enough to advance the slide? Um so, I just want to give you a quick snapshot for not everyone who was on the board at the time when this came to be about 2 years ago. I stood before and said, "Hey, I would like to present a new class to our high school curriculum." And at the time, there was only one other uh school in the county who offered
a print making course. So, we said, "This would be a great addition to our space." And I said, "Mark my words, 3 years from now, we're going to have a print fest." And everyone was like, "What is that?" Well, what it was was we brought in a large barrel drum and a lot of excitement. It was an engaged activity for our fifth through 12th graders. We'll share some facts and figures in a moment. Um but I just want to give credit again. So, the print making course began in 2024-2025 school year. Then our first education foundation mini grant rolling through history was really what gave us that jump start into this program where they supported just some of the initial supplies and materials to get this program up and running. And then the Ed Foundation
was kind enough to support this grant a second year in the making where we then acquired a four screen printing presses. We're familiar with, you know, having clothing screen printing presses, so we have that capacity to do that here in-house. And that was then our first test print in January using the facilities barn and learning [clears throat] how to drive a barrel roller with some of our students from the National Art Honor Society. So, what a blast it was to begin there. So, if you would kindly advance to the next slide, I I thought I would leave this a little bit like an open-ended game cuz you have to sit here this evening and just report out on business. Any best guess on any one of these numbers might mean this evening? Don't be afraid
to shout out whether from our folks in the audience or our school board members. Good numbers up there. Good number of steam rollers. Number of steam rollers. All right, that number is impressive up there. Yeah. Autumn, do you remember what all these numbers stand for? No. >> [laughter] >> There was a lot as you went through it. Autumn's one of those numbers in a moment. Volunteers. Or volunteers, yes. We had a tremendous number of volunteers in the double digits. 500 plus. What do you think that leads us to? Number of prints. Number of students. Dr. Meiser, would you be kind enough to advance the next slide? So, I'm just going to rattle through these so you can see alongside. So, in total, we had one illustrious guest artist. We'll introduce that in a moment. We
had our three incredible art teachers, three community teacher leaders, three different print stations which you'll get to hear from Kensington Square in a moment. We had six Kutztown University student volunteers, eight of our middle school art club students. It's also their first year as a middle school art club, so they're thriving already. It was a 10-hour event though. You'll see at the end it felt like a much longer day for us in the best way. We had 12 of our life skills students volunteer working on various job skills throughout the day, 18 various sponsors, 23 additional community sponsors. We uh created 23 commemorative teacher prints. We'll highlight those. We had 25 of our National Art Honor Society students invested. We created 37 prints that day. Uh there were 48 commemorative student prints designed. There were
over 200 community patrons throughout the day and over 500 our students making up fifth grade all the way up through our seniors. So, it was a a day full of community, student, and art. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. Oh my goodness. Man, if you want to share a little bit about the space and then the the next one. I want to start space. Yes, the space. Beautiful. But so basketball court was where the steamroller was. This was kind of our whole setup here. These two tables were sort of clean paper area, so no inky hands were there. Inking station was here. We had all the rollers and just massive tables covered in table cloths to ink. Visual station, so that the students that were watching the steamroller had paper sitting there. The brew
was in that shaded area there. We had a merch table over in the corner there selling these beautiful t-shirts that we screen printed in house that Autumn designed that print as well. And then over by the the I don't know if I should call it the barn. Athletics. Athletics barn, thank you. Was merch tables for station and then screen printing station as well. So kind of had a nice setup of a great area. Yeah, so we hope we could immerse you in it for a moment. If you haven't followed our social media, the next slide, the first video was put together by one of our students in the National Art Honor Society. This is the best way to put yourself there. This is you're here now. So Dr. Myers can be kind enough So I
went through the put down steamroller fast. Okay. I want to I got to go. >> Georgiana is a student she's a sophomore in National Art Society and chairs our communications and social media and also a student BCTC studying art design. So And Amanda put together a second clip. So this kind of walks through all the stations as well and just sort of all the other stuff. So >> Um I'm going to say that other than the 37 large format prints that we did of the screen printing, fifth grade had about 100 screen prints that we did that day, as well as every single middle schooler, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade that came down that day. Um, so we're talking like another 500 prints that happened. Um, so that was also very exciting cuz then all
of those students got to leave that day with a finished print of one of the four designs that were also all designed by our middle school students. Uh, and that QR code, we'll share later, that just takes you to the website that we were documenting our progress throughout the entire journey of this, as well as all the photos from that event that we can share out again. Um, Becca Myers, should we do more slides? Um, so Victoria Beck, just to give credit to an artist, this is an incredible printmaker, tattoo artist, and dear friend who I actually had the privilege of attending university with. Um, but Victoria, just to give a a base, she's a Lehigh Valley-based artist whose lifelong interest in drawing led her to pursue a career in the arts. And as I
said, she attended Kutztown University and she's going on to print with artists such as Kate Ringel, Ebony Shinke, and Raven Edition, and our own Evan Summer here in town. So, incredibly accomplished printmaker. So, if you know any of those names, then she was kind enough to share. We have one of her her prints that will own in the district and five of which will go back to her as the artist. And now I'll turn over to Kensington and all of them to share a little bit more, just showcase some of the photos of the day itself. All right. So, this is one of our stations that we had. So, this was the foam printing station. So, all of the kids that came, we had grades from 5th grade to all the way up to 12th,
yeah, actually. So, what they would do is we had hundreds of foam prints and they would take a little wooden skewer and then they would go and they would carve their designs. So, I saw kids with dinosaurs, I saw kids with minions, I saw kids with all these random creations. And what they would do is they would take the brayer and they would take it and they'd roll it and they would roll it over their design and they would print it as you can see all their prints here. Now, the really cool thing about this is cuz it showcased the most one of the most basic levels of printmaking and it really got we got to immerse kids into doing that and I think it's really cool to be able to share that experience with
others. Good luck. All right. The next one was screen printing. So, this was where we had five four four screen printers. Yes, we had four more screen printers and we had um several volunteers where we would go and we would take screen printing. So, it's like a little wedge and we would take the ink and we'd roll it over top of the the students' jelly prints that they created um or their watercolor paintings. And they would pick their design and we would get to um add to it with a print over top that that they keep for themselves. That was really cool. And last but not least, we had the large print station. So, this is where we created the large prints that you guys got to see the 37. Um this was huge. We
had to have so many students working on this at a time. There were students there all day working on this cuz it just was kind of like a process that we all had to kind of learn and get in a groove of. So we would have students originally taking the ink and they would have to put it over this 3 ft by 3 ft print. Then after that they would take it and they would take this large rollers that's probably about this big and they would take it and they roll it on the ink. They would put it over top of the lamp which is the thing being printed. Then what they would have to do is they would place it down in the middle. You have to get it exactly on there with the
paper and you place the paper on the top after wetting it. So there would be another group of students that would wet it. The other group of students that would take the wood piece on the top and then Mr. Hoffman would take the the roller and go over the top of it. And that's Mr. Hoffman. It is. Mr. Hoffman did really well. No I did. It was fun. >> [laughter] >> Oh and we had to do blankets. So it was a whole process but it really showed the celebrate teamwork and I think that's really great. So. And then this is just to kind of showcase the number of smiles that day. I mean the pictures don't do enough justice to tell you how fun I mean just putting this slide deck together tonight I had
to limit myself on the time that I could share because there was so many incredible moments from that day. We had at the chief of police there. We had our custodial staff involved all day. We had the school nurse administration. I mean it was just a really incredible way to see our community and I say community as a school encompass come together in such a great showing of the arts. And we want to give a huge shout out to our sponsors. >> [laughter] >> Yeah I think it's a cool time. I think there's just one slide left. We got we got to bring a couple of prints. A lot of them are on display as part of the art show that's throughout the space. Um I believe there's one more photo for us to end
up this portion of it. Yeah, yeah. So, this was the one designed by a student of printmaking. You can read this in artist statement that goes with each of them and we'll be hanging these throughout our schools and some of them have been spoken for by various community agencies, some of which are here tonight which we want to give thanks to such as Good Samaritan Strong and many others we saw on the list. This is the piece by Victoria Backus. Um, just an unbelievable showing of her work. She said it took her about 80 plus hours to carve it back. And uh Barrel of plus, sorry. Oh, yeah, definitely hours, yeah. Yeah. And then this is the middle school print and design that um we created. Each art club member had a specific spot that
was a little bit larger than the rest, but all of it was also designed by all of the students. So, everyone had an opportunity to create a design that was folk art themed. I'm a textile artist by heart and I also love our tradition in First County of folk art cuz where I grew up that was not a thing. Um, so I also wanted to look like a quilt. So, that was where I got the design. Um, I have something to add to that. And uh the final two that we just shared today didn't get given as much attention as others like we every one of our donors uh this was done by our president of the National Honor Society. This was a commemorative print that he used in the design cuz it's a print
fest. This is linoleum based print. Again, just this was the one of a 48 edition that Clara Schnorr had put together. Had the chance to be at her um printing the princess with her. Uh and then this is a cool um piece that if you want to just give a little praise to it. This started off as a paper plate idea or a napkin I think. Yeah. And uh this is actually a collaboration just to showcase the three of us as the three art teachers. Um Uh it's just an incredible showing. The background is a watercolor piece first designed by Sarah and then I did a black and white print over top. Then Sarah went back and painted her fish which is part of her repertoire of style, and then the While they did that,
I was on my loom hand-weaving the fabric for it. So, this was like a special edition that we had done, and it was a cool partnership that we had to create a piece together. So, this is like a special edition that we were making and selling, and all goes back to the the school. >> sold 23. Yeah, now there's seven left, so. So, it was an incredible incredible opportunity to make a whole lot of printmaking, and now I think there's not a person in this room that doesn't know about printmaking, which is awesome. I think that's it for that, Dr. Myers. I think I have a quick, like, 2-minute showing. Last to show about this. So, I'll I'll pause and give space and just say thank you for the Print Fest, thank you to our
friends at Everson Museum of Art. That's the Print Fest. Al Opton and Sarah Squier, thank you so much for your leadership in this. Um You know, it's it was a massive event and all of the coordination and organization that that took place to make it happen and make it right, bringing the community in and engaging all the community partners. It's it's a massive endeavor, you know, and the the one factor that you couldn't control was the weather. And I think that's what happens when you plan for everything else well. Yeah. The weather was always the concern as well. Absolutely. But um Yeah. But you know, but that's it's a credit to your organizational skills that this all came together. Um and just sharing your love for printmaking, specifically for the art community and building it
so much. Thank you Yeah. So much. Thank you so much. Uh and again, one of our goals now coming this year we were asked like, "Are you doing this again next year?" And with exhaustion I said, "No." But um the hope is we don't want to lose that excitement. Um we're thinking every 2 years, maybe every 3 years, cuz then it would cycle through a new pocket of students. So, look for it to come back. And then we put in submissions. We're hoping to present about this and the great work at the Williamsport conference at the the state art education conference, and then as well at New York this year at the National Art Education Association conference, so. Really excited. Also, thank you Kinsey and Autumn for representing >> 500 plus students at the bottom
of that the numbers there representing them and sharing your experience. Thank you. Um just a few more slides I saw on the agenda I got included the Cos Cob Showcase. So, I love that this is the backdrop this evening for the library. You were fortunate to be a part of it last week as well. If you were here, even there was a stage. I thought one of you would have MC'd from that during the board meeting, but I didn't see that. Um but just to give space, we thought in the years past we have a spring concert. It was always kind of became a tradition of arts and music all in one evening, but we thought we want to expand that. And I also used the four A's. In this case, the arts, academics, athletics,
and agriculture. So, it became a week-long showcase which we concluded on Friday. Um as Dr. Myers is showcasing on Tuesday night was the instrumental night. Um so, it was a showing of our 6th through 12th band ensembles and jazz ensembles which Mr. Shirkey gets tons of credit to. And then we celebrated Miss Smaller during the combined finale. Wednesday night was the kickoff of our arts and agricultural night. So, out front we had food trucks. We had our FFA students showcasing their tractor restoration which I know they believe they shared earlier in this year. Uh and then in the back was the plant sale. And here was our tri-M music concert art cape Excuse me, 6th through 12th through the entire halls. Uh and then Thursday evening was our choir night. Again, same format, middle school
and high school performances. It kind of gives you this kind of opportunity to see what's to come. And it really celebrates our music and art program and how they continue to thrive from 6th through 12th and see that kind of growth. Uh and the feedback we got from the community was incredible. Um it doesn't end though. The secondary part of it's over. On May 15th, we have our Greenwich Archer this Friday happening. Face painters will be there. We'd love to see you. Uh and then May 21st is uh Cos Cob Greenwich Elementary um music concert here at the high school. Again, I want to give a shout-out to CASMA. Our arts program just you know, to ourselves, we've been recognized 9 years as an outstanding visual arts community as well as the music department being
recognized as a best school in Berks County for the ninth consecutive year. So, major credit. Thank you to the administration. Thank you to our community for trying something different and just allowing the arts, the music, agriculture to to be represented in this new way. Thanks, everybody. And next up to share a different student program, uh I'd like to call up who will speak about script to screen is Miss Linda Oat. Thank you. And I'm bringing up some of my students, Ellie and Kaylee. So, I've been a long-time children's book author. I have over 30 books published since 1995. I've been doing school author visits and writing residencies since then, and I love working with kids. So, one morning this past January, I woke up with this crazy idea that came out of nowhere. I just
thought, wouldn't it be cool to work with kids in an after-school club, teach them and work with them on writing a screenplay, have them act in it, be filmed, have the film edited, and show it on a big screen like the Strand movie theater's screen. So, impulsively, as I do many things, I shot off an email to the Strand movie theater just through their general website. And within hours, I had a response from Suzie Gher, who said, "Oh, of sounds amazing. I would to do this. Within like a day or two, she had funding from the Bride Again Family Foundation and the Costumes Community Partnership. And then within another couple days, she had contacted Matt Pyle, principal of Greenwich, who got the ball rolling there, and we got 13 students signed up, including these two
lovely ladies. We met on Wednesdays at the school for 2 hours for 8 weeks. I think it ended up being seven because I kind of forgot about spring break. So, I believe we had seven. And the kids worked so hard. They were so amazing, so energetic. And we wrote a time travel piece called Imagine All the History. And this poster was designed by a Costumes high school student, who I lucked into. I was actually substituting in your class, Mr. Hoffman, and I was asking around, "Does anybody know a good artist who could quickly put together a poster for this Script to Screen project?" And somebody said, "Oh, you need to find Klaus Rodriguez Cologne." And so, I found Klaus in in your class, Mr. Hoffman. Within 2 days, we had this poster, which is so
amazing. And uh my best friend's son is 15. His name's Dylan Bordner. He's a 10th-grade Easton High School student, extraordinarily gifted with filmmaking and editing. So, Dylan came and did the filming. He edited, and it was beyond anybody's wildest dreams. The showing at the Strand, right, Mom? It was just mind-blowing how well that movie turned out. And seeing the children on the big screen, they did amazing work. So, not only did we learn about screenwriting, acting, editing, filmmaking, but also just through the progression of the movie, they learned about different time periods in history. The Titanic in 1912, John Lennon in 1980, JFK in 1963, Columbine High School is 1999. So, the whole premise of the movie was that the children could change history. Uh for example, in the Columbine section, the kids ended up,
you know, saying, "Let's be nice to those two boys. You know, they're misfits. Nobody eats lunch with them." So, that was the whole premise. So, it, you know, kind of had a good, not that we'd set out to write a good moral lesson, but it really ended up that way. And when we started, I had no idea this was the first one of these programs that I'd done. So, one of my long-ago friends contacted me, and she volunteered to help me. And I'm really thankful for Tammy because it was a lot of work. The first session, we just kind of, you know, tried to get to know the kids and what interested them, and we took some costumes and props, and just kind of played a few fun acting kind of games. And we didn't
really even launch into what we were going to do until the second after-school club. And then, I think one kid had said, I said, "Do you have any good ideas for a movie?" One kid said sign travel, and I'm not sure what else was thrown out there. We were just throwing things out and seeing what would stick. And so we premiered it April 25th at the Strand. We had a red carpet for the kids to walk. The Strand ordered that. Each kid came in, you know, the grand entrance with families proudly applauding, and we had the movie theater pretty filled, and it was just a super fun day. It was really fun to see the community come together, you know, in addition to the families who were proud to see their children on the screen.
We had pizza donations from Camillo's, uh drinks from Weiss Markets, cookies from the Cottage Bakery, and the printing of these posters from Kutztown Printing. So it just kind of brought everybody together in a way that we don't see enough these days because, you know, we all spend a lot of time on our devices, in our homes, or in our office, or wherever, but it brought people in person. So it was really rewarding, and we'd love to do more in the area or out. Uh Dylan, it was his first project doing this also, and he's so excited to do more. So I thank you for listening, and I want the girls to talk a little bit about what they thought of the program, and uh who's going first? Haley? >> [laughter] >> So So what do
you think you got out of the program, Haley, or what did you like, or do you have any ideas for things that could be better? At first, I was just like, I'm so excited to do this, and then I was like, embarrassed because it's like something big. And then, but in reality, we all had a lot of fun. Cool. Cool, cool. What about you, Ellie? At the beginning, we were all so shy, but like as it went on, we all got like crazy and like we would go with so much energy. And we had our script by like the fourth, maybe. We did. Prepared and ready, and we just practiced it over and over again. Yeah, it was a lot of work practicing lines, and you know, the kids learned the John Lennon Imagine song
to sing at the end. I mean, we crammed a lot into 7 weeks. So, we're thinking, Dylan and Sammy and I, for future Script to Screen, I think we need we had 6 hours of filming time. We're thinking we'd add a couple hours onto that, and maybe another after-school club or more, cuz we really crammed, but they worked so hard. They really stepped up to the plate, and 13 of them, you know, they did an amazing job, and I think uh Haley said made a comment to her mom, you want to be in drama club. Yep. And and Ellie, too, wants to continue more with acting, so it's really cool as a writer, you know, I've been doing this for so long, and occasionally I'll get an email from somebody who's now an adult whose
school I've visited, and you know, I've worked with them when they were little. I got one recently, and she said, "Thank you for showing me that somebody from a little country town could grow up and become a writer because she had her first book coming out." And when I talk with kids, I talk about my childhood, growing up near Morgantown, Pennsylvania, living out in the country, and, you know, just writing about my life and just writing from the heart. So, it's really rewarding because, you know, maybe some of these kids will grow up and they'll act, or they'll write, or they'll make films. And, you know, it's it's just such a good feeling to know that you might have changed somebody's direction in a way that they might pursue a passion. I had a a
teacher. I went to Garden Spot High School in New Holland, and I thought it Well, first, I wanted to be a roller derby queen cuz, you know, roller derby was big back then. And my parents said that's not realistic. I said, "Okay, I'll be a rock star." Cuz I played electric guitar. They said, "No, you need a backup plan." And then, in 11th grade, I had an English teacher who said, "You should think about becoming a writer." And nobody had ever said that, and she totally planted the seed. And I think if not for her, I wouldn't have this career that I love. So, I just think any little thing can kind of change the direction or plant the seed of what they might want to do. So, if I wish I could show you
all the movie, but it's like 35 minutes long. But if anybody wants to watch it, my website is my name. It's lindaotmanhigh.com. My middle name is O, like O'Neal, O A T N A N. Last name, H I G H. So, if you email me, I will send you a link to the YouTube you know, the YouTube link where Dylan has a private channel and he has the movie, but you'll be able to view it. So, we'd love to bring it to other children and other schools. So, thank you so much and thank you for having us tonight. Hey Leon Ellie, do you mind if we ask you one or two questions? Okay. So, I mean you shared a little bit about your experience. Um I guess what was it like performing on the street
and stage? It was kind of embarrassing at first. Uh I was in the nurse's area Ellie and Eleanor and we just all had our heads down trying to hide our faces sweating the whole time. But I appreciate you saying that though, you know, as we talked like maybe this will inspire you to be a writer or an actor or something in that realm, but I I think with that we have two um members of the theater club here at the high school who perform in the musicals. You know, those are sort of the technical skills of it, but just being able to perform in front of people, being able to speak in public as you said and you started off really quiet and then got um opened up a little bit around each other and
that is the universal skill of performing and whether it's in elementary school or middle school or high school. So, taking that with you um you don't want to hide your face, but you know, stand up there confidently and present your hard work. Um anything about the creative process you would like to share? Um it did take a while, but the effort was definitely worth it. We only had 3 hours on two Saturdays to do a lot of filming. We would like our first day our principal we filmed the last scene in the whole movie first and and we were all just sitting there out of like we didn't really know what to do because we just walked in and dropped off our stuff and sat there and waited. And I could tell most of those
were on their phones and stuff like that. Mr. Pyle did a really cool cameo. He appeared near the end of the movie giving a nice speech to the group of kids and he's like a natural actor. >> the camera. Thank you for your work. We're happy to have students participate. I think you know it's amazing to me that you talk about waking up in November and having this idea. Um This has been in the works in different iterations for almost two years now. You know what? Disconnected from where that grant initially came from. It was when the Kutztown Community Partnership first purchased the Strand, one of the ideas is how do we get students in there on stage and they had secured a grant for a slightly different program but similar. Um with through the
Brighton Foundation and that kind of fell through. So it's you know it's fortuitous that you would wake up and have that idea, reach out to the right person at the right time, make it happen for our students. So thank you so much for your time um bringing bringing this several year vision to reality. Congratulations. Yeah. Thank you for our presentations tonight. Um I don't have a superintendent's report prepared in terms of a slide deck because we had in-person presenters here. There's so much going on in the district uh leading all up to our graduation on May 28th with the rain date on May 29th. Uh we have uh athletic programs uh succeeding and competing all over the place including a Berks County champion triple jump Clara Engel last Thursday. I think that was on Thursday's
event that will be leading into district playoffs. We have our um softball team that won in the Berks County quarterfinals on Saturday that will be competing Oh no, they're competing right No, tomorrow night tomorrow night they're competing semi-finals for the county in addition you know just a whole bunch of different events including a beautiful prom on Friday night as well probably shared in student representative report. I think that's what probably had absolutely. Yeah last week was pretty crazy and it's very busy. I can't even imagine how Mr. Hoffman felt the whole time but it was great for everyone and then it like ending it with our prom which is really like full circle like especially me being a senior and having all my senior concerts band try and chorus and the prom is beautiful our
prom committee did an amazing job decorating. I know that that's a quite a while and a lot of planning so yeah. From it seemed like everybody had a great time. Thank you to Mr. Brett and Kelly Smith and Mrs. Groller and everyone else involved you know from the staff side of making sure that it was a safe and efficient event. It was exciting to see everybody just having a good time and dancing and even see the good food and the beautiful setting that we all had. Does anyone have anything to add? It six months went into planning that prom and as a class we really put all of our time into fundraising for prom to have a good prom for everybody and I I think it turned out really well. It was we were very
excited. It was stressful once we got down to like the last parts like ordering everything getting everything set up. It was it was stressful but we they got it done they got it set up they got to go to pictures and everything and I think it turned out really well. Congratulations. Uh yeah so let's let's talk about our musical endeavors I guess. On Tuesday it was the band concert. I don't really like how they separated the band and the chorus and everything. It I I imagine it'd would be a lot better for the viewers because before it took not it took a long time to get through all of them. And we got to play a lot more songs. I think it was four or five songs that we played for just the band. And
we celebrated uh Mrs. Miller's career cuz she unfortunately is retired. That's a matter of perspective. >> [laughter] >> Unfortunate for us, I think it's fortunate for her. Very good. Thank you. Yeah, that was it. Okay. Uh we are going to move into the board committee reports. Um if anybody wants to excuse themselves, give me a couple minutes to to do that. Okay. Then it's uh board committee reports. Mrs. Hoffman, BCTC. A lot of good things happening. Um Uh one of the things is that they're getting over a million dollars in grants, which is really exciting for them and for us, too, because that means we send less money because they have more money, so that's kind of cool. Um they're getting a equipment loan from NASA. I think that's pretty cool. Um they had this
um they had a Shark Tank event. I don't know if any of you heard about it the at Rack. BCTC had a Shark Tank event with Robert Herjavec, the Shark Tank guy, where the kids like pitched their ideas to this to the Shark Tank guys. So, I thought that was really cool. Um unfortunately, I couldn't make it. Um they also a bunch of kids went to the capital on CTE day. Um so, they got to show what they do at the capital. Devin Rowe, one of our own Pottsgrove students was there representing Pottsgrove. So, that was pretty cool. Um and I have an extra ticket for graduation if anybody wants to be my date. >> [laughter] >> Come with me. I'll get the date, but yeah. Good stuff happening all the time. Thank you. Yeah,
exciting stuff everywhere these days. All right. Thank you very much. Next is BCIU, Mr. Risner. We'll meet next week and report. Okay. Uh Berk Tax Collection Committee. Second. I don't think there was a meeting. No meeting. All right. Extracurricular Facilities Committee, Mr. Lloyd. Uh we didn't have a meeting last week, but we do have two two items on the agenda for tonight's approval from the previous meeting, the district fuel agreement and the seal coating and striping at the high school area. Okay. Thank you. Uh PSBA, uh Ms. Holt. Thank you. Um the one thing that I have Well, they're both related to the legislative platform. So, each year PSBA develops a legislative platform that guides their advocacy. Um and so, if there are things that aren't on the existing platform, boards can create proposals to
add to that. So, if this board would be interested in that, the deadline for submission is um June 26th and I can share share the uh submittal regulations. Um but then the other thing is that our um our board can have up to two delegates to vote on the platform and the bylaws if there are any um uh revisions to PSBA bylaws and that happens at the delegate meeting which is in November on 7th and Cumberland Valley um school district in Mechanicsburg. Um Anyway, the deadline to select delegates is also June 26th. Um so if anybody would be interested in doing that. Um it used to be part of the annual conference and it's separate now. I um was a delegate when it was part of the conference several times and um they you know,
the whole platform is presented and some of parts of the platform are debated at that and then ultimately it gets voted on. So that's basically what the responsibility of the delegates is. Would you like any interested board members to reach out to you before we close it? Is that okay with you? That makes sense, yeah. Okay. So if anybody's interested, please reach out to the school board. Anything else here? Thanks. Thank you. Um then last is the policy and curriculum uh committee, Mr. Risser. Thank you, Mr. Cox. Uh we had uh curriculum. There's every now and again some families that are looking for some acceleration at the high school which would require about requires work during the summer and it's we offer things that are in-house and the administration was just looking for a thumbs
up to to move forward in kind of formalizing that and looking on directions as far as vendors and things of that nature and it's uh would be a uh that's zero neutral as far as um cost to the district. And then there's some items for policy maintenance. That the agenda. That concludes my report. Okay, thank you. Next is uh all the public comments, public comment on agenda items. Don't have anyone signed for agenda items, um professional objections there. Um Miss Molina, you signed up for non-agenda. Yes. Would you would you Are you interested in staying for the whole meeting or would you like to make your comments now? That'd be excellent. Thank you. Hello, I'm Viviana Molina and I'm a grade seven student in Drama Club in Spring Camp. I enjoy school and I value
my education. I find school an enjoyable place where I can not only learn, but I can make new friends. However, recently, a lot of my time in school, I have had inappropriate comments made on comment on the color of my skin. I'm not here to just tell my story, but to tell an entire group of people's story. I and other students have been in our school have been told things based off of the color of our skin and I've been told things. I was told racial comments like being told how I should be deported, not just not just comments like these were made on me, but by my whole family by students because of one situation. When I put my trust in the school and people in charge, I was promised something would be done.
However, nothing was. I have the misfortune of seeing that person every single day knowing what they've said about This is not just a problem that has happened to me, but it's happened to a whole ethnicity of students. Not just me, but I've heard so many students receiving racial comments and when putting our trust in school leaders, nearly nothing or nothing at all is done. A student I know was called a racial slur and when the school was informed, nearly nothing was done about it or not that I know of. Instead, they received a punishment completely unfitting. Personally, a situation has recently happened like this to me and I had had continuous comments made about my ethnicity. I was told I should be {quote} deported and people went so far to even call my family illegal,
which is far from the truth. This has impacted me severely and I even went home crying on the bus because of these type of comments. Mentally for me and other students, this severely hurts us and it hurts us even more when people that we trust and are leaders in school don't do anything or close to nothing about it. This not only allows students to continue their actions, but allows them to get bolder seeing as they know know close to nothing is done. Again, I'm putting my trust in the highest leaders of our school hoping for some form of change to the way action is taken on the subject. I ask for better treatment of the students who have been treated this way and ask for more fairness. This can be anything close to justice for
the students in our school who have been treated this way. If this was handled more appropriately, this would not only make our school in a better environment, we'd feel much more safer and enjoyable. Thank you for your time. Miss Leo, thank you for your time. Thank you for your courage this evening. Um, I'm very sorry to hear that you have experienced that. And Mr. Chairman, I think we can give Mr. Lynch a nudge. Thank you, Margaret. Okay. And um, no other but nobody else would sign up. We can move into personnel. We are going to take personnel one through 10 to begin with. So, it is the recommendation of the administration that the Board of School Directors approve the following personnel items one through 10 are listed there. Do we have a motion? I move
Hoffman. Second Light. Questions or comments? On roll call, please. Reba Hoffman? Yes. >> Cecilia Hold? Yes. Jeremiah Light? Yes. Michael Salisbury? Yes. Daniel Wismer? Yes. Ronald Ziggler? Yes. Matthew Vianna? Yes. Aaron Angell? Yes. Jason Capps? Yes. Motion carries. Congratulations to Dr. Campbell. Thank you. Welcome to the team. We're excited to welcome you seven new members to the Cook Inlet Area School District team. Mr. Campbell Dr. Campbell is here with us tonight as the new principal of Cook Inlet High School. We got to get him geared up properly. Congratulations. Thank you. You may want to try that on. >> [laughter] >> There's two of them. Sell them together. Congratulations again. >> Thank you. Uh the the Now, we can take number 11. It is the recommendation of the administration of the Board of School Directors approve
the following personnel item. 11 is listed there. Uh and that is Mr. Vianna as a volunteer for the Dungeons and Dragons Club. Do we have a motion? I move Hold. Second Hoffman. Any questions or comments? I'd like to thank uh Mr. Vianna for volunteering to be a part of the club. Just um unrelated to his approval as volunteer, just over the last couple of weeks had two interactions, one with a student, one with with a parent of that student who participated in the club and just shared what a great experience it has been. Um the sense of community that they have created around um you know, uh the club with such this focus that they found sort of a a niche within within the group and we're very excited about that. So, thank you for
volunteering and thank you to Dr. Johnson and Mr. Morning for who have who have organized the club from the beginning along with students. Uh roll call, please. Celia Hall. Yes. Jeremiah Light. >> Yes. Michael Salesbury. Yes. Daniel Wismer. >> Yes. Laura Zigler. Yes. Matthew Vigna. Aaron Angle. Yes. Rita Hoffman. >> Yes. Jason Cuff. Yes. Question carries. Personal any receipt of all men dated privileges. B is policy maintenance. Um I believe that we will pull out one to begin with here. It is the recommendation of the policy and curriculum committee that the board of school directors approve the first reading of the following policy uh 1 policy 004 membership with attachments uh 1 2 uh listed below it. Do we have a motion? So moved, Mr. Chairman. A second? Second, Mr. Light. Uh thank you. Questions,
comments uh on that policy. Um I have a couple of things. Um a few meeting members reached out um regarding this policy and I think that the way that it's showing option A and option B. First of all, I think the community thought it was going to be but some members of the community thought it was going to be either like one or the other was going to become part of the policy. Um it's my understanding that both are supposed to be part of the policy. That's the way That's the way we understood it last week was that both would to a part of the process. Okay. But you're you're absolutely correct. that uh All of the emails we received, some people thought it was A or B or at this point, you know, having
not even had the meeting, some people just read Right. Um And then I also feel like option A, which gives the community visibility and um you know, the opportunity to volunteer, to join the board of directors, um you know, is overall a more transparent process, gives the community a voice. Um But the way that it shows here, it it seems like either one is just as good. Um and my my sense was that option B was if for some reason we can't come to a consensus using option A or any board or can't come to a a consensus using using option A or there's some other emergency or or something of that nature that option B would be the appropriate one. But I feel like they're given equal weight. That was also the essence of
my feedback as well when we discussed it in the previous meeting. We did discuss it as really that last resort, you know, if if we are not able to go through the normal process, if we're not able to come to a decision as a board, then we would give the president the authority to to actually make that a that recommendation for the appointment. So, I would like to move that we adjust the language here under option where I guess we'll need to adjust it at a couple of places, but it should really say it should be filled under the option A process with an option, you know, B as the in in the event the full board is not able to come to a decision. Uh together, then that option B approach would come into
play. I also heard from quite a few, you know, from different community members expressing support for the transparent option at Are you planning on wanting to recommend and how are you Uh we can amend it on the spot or we could also go put it back to committee to have the language worked through. Uh I think my my opinion is we've spent enough time on this policy so far, so I'd rather see it something be done with it at this point. Okay, so then I recommend um under the language vacancies on the board of school directors shall be filled uh with the following process. Um you know, and then we don't need option A reference. It should reference 1 2 3 and then it should go to in the event in in alternative for the
words option B, it should say in the event that the full board cannot make a shared decision. Um the president of the school board shall be the authority to make a motion for a recommended individual to fill that board position. So, then I don't think we need that second option B documentation. Do I believe need that second to her amendment. Second. Um, floor now is open um for comment. I mean, I I would just say that I I did respond to uh Dr. uh Everett today. I said the A starts a process as described immediately upon announcement of resignation. The board does not need to take action at all to begin the process. The B is the alternative provided to a future board in case option A bogs down for whatever reason. A future future
board would would decide option A was not functioning to their satisfaction, necessitating necessitating the use of option B. Um so I I don't I mean, I I think it's semantics at this point. I think that the way we started um with option A and making that process begin um before the board's even involved is going to get folks most boards are going to lean towards using it. However, um as I've said the whole time, a board has to have the right to govern itself and option B is that ability if for whatever reason they don't the majority does not like the way option A, which has already begun, is progressing. So, I'll be voting no to the amendment. That's not what the language says. You're You were saying if the process gets bogged down, then
it should be available for the board to short to move on from. Correct. But But that's not what this language says. This language says that the president of the board at any time can just put forth the uh candidate to You're You're forgetting that the process begins prior to the resignation is official. But it does state that the president of the school board shall have the authority at any time or for any reason to make a motion. So, I I mean, clearly it's not it's not having that nuanced, detailed that you were sharing about the bogged downness of of a process. I think that speaks for itself. I I this is a policy not not does it have to go, you know, word for word. I think there's two options. The first one is getting
started long before, you know, the resignation's even official. Um So, the second option is it the option B is just giving that board the autonomy to do what they feel is necessary. It would it would be a shame if um we can't come to agreement um and then we can't get this the the language um policy language in the policy at all, but Which is which is why the language that I had proposed that in the event that the full board is not able to come to an an agreement, then we would defer to the president's recommendation. That should very much fall within your your concern, I guess. One One second. One thing just between those that I think, you know, so even if it's option A, there there is no there's no conclusion to
that process until somebody makes a motion and there's a vote by the board. You know, ultimately, the conclusion of any process is by a recommendation a motion by the board, right? Like so the So, when you have the interviews, um it's still somebody at the end has to make a motion at the end of the interviews for the candidates. So, I think, you know, even that's something that's not necessarily That's where I think it gets tough if it says, "Well, if there's no conclusion that the board agrees on." Well, we wouldn't know that until some members of the board, however it happened, some member of the board made a motion and second and there was a vote. That's the only way we would know that there was no agreement. Yeah, and so then when the
vote doesn't come to a positive conclusion, then the president would be able to make a motion of of their recommended candidate. So, as I understand, the motion is to remove the word option A and then down where it says option B, then to insert in the event of then the president of school board. So that goes with the changes you want to correct. I see no problem with that. That fits the intent as it seems to be a of this folks. How about that? Yeah, we can't come to a conclusion. Let's say in the event of we go to the president make it happen. Look, the problem that you're that you're not acknowledging is that the process could get back bogged down for a myriad of reasons prior to that point in time where the
board is deciding to go another route. We were all making the assumption that this process is just going to work cleanly. That we're going to have 15 applicants and there's there's There's other things that we may not be seeing today that could affect that process. So in the event of you would have the Well, we can't have we can't have 14 events of. So But there's there's only one. It's only one. Just simply saying if the board does not come to a full agreement, whether that be because there are no applicants, whether that >> You won't ever get to that point if there's no applicants. Well, surely there's there's no the board has not made a consensus at that moment. There are no applicants. And therefore in that event of the board not coming to
a full decision that it would go to the We never done the interviews or anything like that. So we never got to that point. >> would have posted. We would have allowed the community to, you know, we would have given the transparent opportunity for everyone in the community to apply. And so it it certainly warrants that same openness and transparency of the process. And it will still give us that protection. I know you had mentioned a concern in in the committee meeting about it maybe going to a judge at a state level could be appointed. So again, this is not ever allowing that to happen. This is saying that before that we get to that point, we would allow the president to make a recommendation. So, it it it I think it really is a
nice blend of of making sure that we have a transparent open process, but that we're protecting that the community from the concern that you raised about being at a stalemate and not getting out of our of our decision. Yeah, I prefer my my language as suggested. Yes, well. Let's go ahead and vote. Yeah, that's yeah, that's fine. Mr. Kaplan. I have a question. All right. Go ahead. Um I I just from my perspective, um I I think it it probably would not have been a bad idea to have objective triggers. Um in the past in these discussions and um committee there's uh there's there's a goal in order to have very specific language that's in this case in order to, you know, make something uh look like it was shady or look like it was
not transparent, and then we have so I I mean, everything is happening in open meetings, so um I just I push back on any any kind of somebody's trying to to call something shady that's not I'm not really That might be somebody's perception, but it's it's just objectively not happening. Um and we can repeat that a lot, and that's okay. It just doesn't make it true. And then when we get to trying to discuss objective triggers, that's when discussions fall apart because the goal is to have these very specific things, and we don't have productive conversation at that point. So, I will I would I would agree that there is probably certain scenarios where it would be okay to have objective triggers, uh but that's not that's not traditionally how we were able to to
move forward with productive conversations. So, I am in support of the president uh being able to to trigger this without having to go through a myriad of specific things that happened um that we will never agree upon. So, I think this was actually a very good um um meet in the middle. Um and if I think it it it fits what everybody should be after, in my opinion. Um and I honestly do think that if there's um candidates who are vetted and they are supported, then I think that it would be a failure of leadership to not move in the direction of somebody who is vetted and supported and would keep the process moving and keep the efficiency of the board moving. So, I I we always run into these games of there's one side
versus another side. And I I I can see concerns. I can always see concerns on both sides, but um I think provided uh the the the conversations, uh the how things have unfolded up to this point, I think this is a the best opportunity for us to come to a collective agreement. And if it falls apart, I think it's because again, we are not looking for a collective agreement, we're looking for a singular outcome that's in order to satisfy one particular goal. So, that's why I uh I'm I don't support the amendment. Could you be a little more specific on what you think the single goal is? The single goal is in order to uh take historical and has happened recently and to uh paint it into a light of some sort of malfeasance or
shady occurrence. So, I don't think anybody has mentioned what's happened [clears throat] in the past. We're all I'm certainly focused future and looking at where >> good and I hope we can come to agreement. That's perfect. Okay. I have a question. Go ahead. I haven't been part of the policy committee for a while, so just curious how long have you guys been um talking about how many meetings have been going on for this particular one? Been on the agenda for like five months. Been on the agenda I think it's been on the agenda at least five times. He's probably spoken to about it three times by us. Um cuz I don't think that we should be amending last minute. Like that's what the policy committee curriculum thing is. So, I'm going to vote no to
amend here because Um so, we Then we would all agree to send it back to the committee. That would be the That would be the option. I just want to put that on the table like that, but yeah. Well, I think we need a vote on the amendment and then there was a motion to uh Well, I pass the policy. I first had asked to take it back to committee because again this doesn't reflect the discussion within the committee. So, uh again asked can we take it back to the So, I guess we're uh we're going to you know, remove your um Do I need to make a a motion to take it back to the committee? I don't think so. Remove your motion to amend first. I will remove my motion to amend. Now,
I think you need to make a motion to take it back to committee. Okay, I will make a motion that we return this to the committee so that appropriate language can be documented that reflects the full conversation of the members in the committee. Okay, thank you. And then, we'll a second, please. I'll throw out from you. It's from somebody. Yeah. Yeah, thank you. Um we will have a roll call vote on removing it back to the committee. Jeremiah Light? No. Michael Salisbury? Yes. Daniel Wismer? No. Laurel Ziegler? Yes. Matthew DeVincent? Yeah. Aaron Angle? No. Reba Hoffman? Yes. Cecilia Holt? Yes. Jason Kuffel? No. It will be go It will be sent back to the committee. Mr. Kuffel, may I ask a question? I I'm not looking to um for any answer on this. I'm just
hoping that um if we the last time this occurred we didn't have great attendance. So, it would be I'm hoping that those people who are invested this do attend. That's possibly at the next meeting. Well, that's a fair request. Do we need to do any of the first and second motions before we go to the meeting? No, we don't need Okay, next we can take policy 005 organization. Um do we have a motion for policy 005? So moved, Clay. Second. Okay, second. Do we have uh questions or comments on 005 organization? Just have a Yeah. One housekeeping comment to make. Negotiations Committee was changed to Negotiations Team. Yeah. Correct? Correct. That's correct. That'll be consider that changed next time you see the reorg. That was just housekeeping that's true. Questions or comments on 005? Yeah,
just to kind of summarize where we are in this. We we discussed of broadening the scopes of the committees but then meeting as the committee as a whole um and this was a little bit unclear on what it would need to be. Um and reviewing some things from other districts and talking to Mr. Mancuso so we would maintain that reorg. These committees would be named. And we would still and they would still meet they would then meet as a as a committee of the whole but within the committees they would select a chair of the next meeting like they do now. So basically we broaden the scope and we meet as a committee of the whole. It's kind of what we meant for everything that so that so we had that flexibility. Sounds like that's
what was agreed upon. Is there an effective date on this? Uh the effective date uh was stated to be so we'll type that in there as well. The effective date would be with reorg next year. So it would be effectively for the January committees. That reorg. That's what's been discussed all year. But these will remain a committee meeting which is separate from the monthly meeting that has the >> they'll be committee of the whole but no action can be taken only recommendations here. Okay. Unless it is otherwise approved of course Okay. Brenda sir. Okay, we'll go over the roll call please. Michael Salisbury Yes. Daniel Whismer >> Yes. Laura Ziegler Yes. Matthew Vinyard Yes. Karen Angle Yes. Rita Hoffman Yes. Cecilia Holt Yes. Jeremiah Leight Yes. Jason Copley Yes. Lamarcus Carries All right. Now we
have um first read we need a motion to approve the first reading of policies four and five. I believe those are pretty straightforward. So, can we have a motion for those, please? I will. Second, Wismer. Questions or comments there? Roll call, please. Danny Wismer? Yes. Laura Ziegler? Yes. Matthew Vigna? Yes. Aaron Angle? Yes. Rita Hartman? >> Yes. Cecilia Holt? Yes. Jeremiah Light? >> Yes. Michael Salesbury? Yes. Laura Ziegler? Yes. Jason Cuffs? Yes. Motion carried. See the proposed final budget is the recommendation of the administration that the Board of School Directors approve the proposed final budget for the 2026-2027 school year. Proposed final budget 3.1% increase with revenues of 38,927,214 dollars and expenditures of 38,978,689 dollars supported by a real estate tax of 33.2423 mills, local services tax of 5 dollars, earned income tax of 1.5%,
real estate transfer tax of 1.5%, and amusement tax of 5%. Do we have a motion? So moved, Hartman. Second. Secondly. Questions or comments on the proposed final budget? It is non-binding. Um What are the odds? The slides that were presented at our last budget and finance committee meeting and we can make changes between now and the final budget. And uh as new information arises or if there's any recommendations from the board, we do have a planned budget finance committee meeting next week unless otherwise stated. We'll keep that on the We'll keep that on the docket just to review these things and see if there's any additional information. Some variables we discussed is kindergarten enrollment that has not changed substantially enough to know the answer yet. And obviously we have some staffing that we're still completing.
We're doing some tonight with a few other positions. So, there's always there's always moving pieces, you know, throughout the year. We are you know, we are happy to be recommending a uh budget that includes no reductions to our instructional staff through you know, because of economic need. Um but also honoring, you know, the the the attempt to stable load for index. So. Thank you. Uh now that comes to our questions, but I guess we can move to roll call. Laura Ziegler? Yes. Matthew Bieniek? Yes. Aaron Angle? >> Yes. Rita Hoffman? >> No. Cecilia Holt? Yes. Jeremiah Light? >> Yes. Michael Salisbury? Yes. Daniel Wismer? Yes. Jason Culp? Uh yes. Motion carries. D is the New Story Services Agreements. It is recommendation of the administration that the Board of School Directors approve the tuition agreements with
New Story Schools in accordance with the schedule A rate sheets. New Story Schools Kutztown and New Story Schools Reading. We have a motion. I'll move. I'll move. Second by Angle. Questions or comments on the New Story Services Agreements? All right, roll call, please. Matthew Bieniek? Yes. Aaron Angle? Yes. Rita Hoffman? Yes. Cecilia Holt? >> Yes. Jeremiah Light? Yes. Michael Salisbury? Yes. Daniel Wismer? Yes. Laura Ziegler? Yes. Jason Culp? Yes. Motion carries. Uh E is IMR Digital Records. It is recommendation of the administration that the Board of School Directors approve the quote from IMR Digital for electronic special education education student records conversion for the attached. We have a motion. I'll move. I'll move. Second Hoffman. Any questions or comments there? It's an annual process that IMR assists us in creating digital records for confidential special
education records storage. We are We have had some internal discussions about can we in the future Are we at a point where we can do some internal processes for that and eliminate this need? We're not there right now, but I'm optimistic we may be in that position. So, we may not see this in the future. But All right. Can we move to a roll call on the IMR digital records? Aaron Engel. Yes. Reba Hoffman. >> Yes. Cecelia Holt. >> Yes. Jeremiah Light. Yes. Michael Salisbury. Yes. >> Daniel Wismer. Yes. Laurel Ziegler. Yes. Matthew Vinyard. Yes. Jason Cook. Yes. Motion carried.
